Yeah, Bryan.
I mean, it's like the it's it's just crazy, though.
The world the world the world has changed so much since we first since we first got into crypto, and so has LayerZero.
The difference between, like, our early days of BD, and doing BD with SushiSwap to now spending, you know, a 100% of my time with Fidelity, with BlackRock, with NICEE, with all these different groups.
It's just night night and day different.
Totally different world.
It has been really fun and enjoyable, but, yeah, it's it's been a big it's been a great transition.
I mean, it's a sign that we've made it.
当然。
For sure.
Guys, welcome back to a very special episode of 1000x.
We have the founder and head of LayerZero, Bryan, on the pod today.
Thank you for joining.
Of course.
Thank you so much for having me.
I mean, look, there's been so much discussion recently about the tokenization of assets, about the new frontier of crypto.
We're sort of entering into this era where things are actually happening.
And I followed you for quite some time, Bryan.
I know that you've been a builder in this space and you're pushing forward on LayerZero.
But my first question for you is, to the audience that doesn't know, what is LayerZero and how did it even start?
Like, tell us where you came from, how you found crypto, and then how you decided to build LayerZero.
好的。
Sure.
Where I came from is always it was a bit of an interesting like, I I grew up in a town of 900 people, rural New Hampshire, like, you know, as as remote as you can get.
Grandmother had a 100 acre farm.
Fortunate enough, got a computer when I was young, so I was just like a nerd with a computer for most of my life.
Went to school for computer science and ended up dropping out to play poker professionally, which was like a very unpopular decision in my household, but worked out pretty well.
I did that full time for eight years.
I did 80 countries, traveled the world, did all that.
But then in 2011, online poker got banned in The United States.
So I actually found Bitcoin super early in 2011 because that was how all of us in poker woke up one morning, there's DOJ symbols on every website, like, career is gone.
All your money is frozen.
It's just, like, over immediately, which one gives you a healthy skepticism for for government, which I think was probably a good thing and and definitely aligned to the early crypto ethos.
And two, sort of everybody within poker just started using Bitcoin as a way to deposit any of the sites that were remaining.
So I found crypto super early.
Started my first company in 2011, sold it in 2013, won all in crypto in 2013, 2014, so racks of miners in my garage mining Bitcoin.
I was completely obsessed.
And then end of twenty fourteen, 2015, the whole industry just died.
And so I went and I saw DeepMind's Atari agent demo and got super motivated by reinforcement learning, built a bunch of machine learning models kind of for fun.
I showed it to this I showed it to a friend and he was like, oh, like, I have this group of MIT PhDs who worked at something similar.
And I'm college dropout, so that's like pretty intimidating.
But I was like, sure.
I I showed them what I built and they were like, this is amazing.
Like, we have somebody you have to talk to.
And when I got on the phone, that person was was Billy Beane.
So, you know, founder of Moneyball GM of the Oakland days.
And so I ended up selling those models to a bunch of the pro baseball teams.
And what sorry.
What do those what do those models actually do exactly?
Predictive models, primarily what I was focused on were pitcher versus batter matchups in baseball.
So it was basically just taking this really unique dataset because baseball gives you sort of like 50 data points on every pitch and trying to find when a pitcher's release point you know, all of these different variables.
When a pitcher would start to degrade before you would, like, visually know it and when you should actually take out your pitcher, and then you have to weigh, like, the state of the game, the current skill of the pitcher against, like, the bullpen, your upcoming schedule, and you wanna just optimize for wins overall.
And so, yeah, it was interesting, super fun.
等等。
Wait.
That's that's really cool.
Are are any of your mods, do you know if they're still using them?
I don't know if they're still I don't know if they're still using them.
不。
No.
But I know the team that we did went from the the one team we worked really, really closely with went from, like, bottom, I know, bottom of the league to to taking second the next year, so losing the World Series.
So Oh, wow.
Are you are you you're a big baseball fan, I assume that?
I wasn't.
I actually hated the sport, but it just had such a rich dataset.
You know?
It was like it just seemed like a a good and interesting way to apply it.
Well, as as a huge baseball fan myself, that kinda hurts to hear, but that's amazing.
I I it's grown on me a little bit over time, but, no, at the time, I was like, I would have loved to be doing football or basketball or something else.
But the the data was just so rich, and it was, for for NBA, if you wanted data, it's like $500,000 a year to get Sportsview, any of the player tracking, and and MLB was just, like, free, just free and open, which made it awesome as an entry point.
It's like it's honestly the best sport in the world for stats nerds.
It's crazy.
确实
For
没错。
sure.
Because it's also all the people that are involved in baseball are very forward thinking as well when it comes to
like a really long published history too of, like, sort of, like, state of the art models along the way.
And so you can do like, it's very easy to benchmark yourself.
It's much harder in most other sports to be able to benchmark how where you actually are on the prediction lens.
So no.
It was great.
So that was super interesting.
Did that sort of 2015 into 2016.
Took 100% of my net worth and put into Bitcoin kind of like mid to end of twenty sixteen and started another company then, sold that company two years later for $50 ish million, and then basically just built for four years of just trying and just failing at a bunch of stuff.
Got fortunate because Bitcoin went from $700 to $20,000 during that period of time, and all of this stuff was great.
We were just building and trying to figure out what we're doing.
So we ended up building, doing AI research basically, and we showed it to Noam Brown.
Noam at the time was a really amazing guy, had left the Fed, was doing his Carnegie Mellon Ph.
D, had just won science breakthrough of the year for his work, and he was really impressed with what we had done.
So we co published with Gnome, got cited by DeepMind, had this really cool path in AI research side, which again is like a college dropout.
DeepMind was the one who got me interested in it.
Citing my work later was awesome.
Noam has gone on now.
He's like the inventor of test time versus train time sort of trade offs, author of 'one and 'three at OpenAI, one of the world's leading AI researchers.
But so we did that and then basically started messing around.
We got a bunch of people asking us to basically make trading bots between the first early DEXs.
So all this was happening at the same time.
As we were doing that, we realized nobody had any clue what they were doing.
So we started doing MEV.
These are me and my two co founders I brought out here, and we're just, again, we're building a bunch of technology and a bunch of different lenses.
And so it was like MEV before MEV was like really a thing.
You were just trying to submit things as fast as humanly possible into blocks.
And one day you just realized, you started to notice that people were ahead of you in positioning with zero gas paid.
It was like, oh, actually the validators themselves are now colluding against us.
There's this this whole sort of structure is happening.
We're like, all Well, that's out the window.
We we don't we don't know how to compete with that.
And we
How saw how long how long did it take before that got competitive?
I mean, how long were you running that?
You know, there's, like, three groups.
I I know one of the groups actually went and ended up being a cohort of of jump trading.
So there was three groups who were really competitive at the time, and then again it got into the CABAL and then got formalized into MEV.
So about a year and a half on that.
And then we started seeing volume.
We started seeing Binance Smart Chain launch, it was more volume than Ethereum, more users than Ethereum.
That was really uncommon.
Having been in crypto from so early, you saw everything launch in 2013, 2014, everything launch in early twenty seventeen.
Was just all vapor ware.
Like, nothing got used.
Nobody actually, like, used any of this stuff.
And so it was, like, like, really interesting.
And we started to ask ourselves, like, well, what, you know, what what do you do with an environment that's, like, fast and cheap, but you don't really trust it?
You treat it entirely as ephemeral and then like, could you roll the result back to Ethereum, sort of like keep state there?
所以就有了类似roll up的东西,pre roll up。
And so there's like roll ups, pre roll ups.
And we just like tinkered.
We built a toy game for ourselves just to kind of like mess around.
And then as we were building, we realized there was no way to actually trigger events between the two chains.
And we just assumed it was a solved problem.
And so we went and looked at bridges, and we were really, really shocked.
We would never put millions, let alone like billions of dollars into the state of the bridging world back then.
And so then we tried to make a better bridge.
We're like, okay, like this is a solvable problem.
Let's just do this.
And we're just gonna do this entirely just anonymous, just launch it completely randomly.
As we're building, we realized there was no way to trigger events across the chain.
And so it wasn't until then that we realized this is the generalizable problem, is actually the communication between these two things.
You build anything on top.
So I guess all of this is a long winded answer of what does LayerZero do?
LayerZero is that communication layer between chains.
That's when we really, really formalized building LayerZero and then building on top of this is is like, how do you normalize a protocol for how chains talk to each other?
And then once you have that fabric and you go from isolated execution environment to a broader Internet of value or connected chains, what can you do with that?
And so fast forward to today, we've got about $101,150,000,000,000 dollars worth of assets built on top of us.
We just crossed $300,000,000,000, moved lifetime.
Zero moving $1,015,000,000,000 dollars a month roughly, which is kind of more than Western Union, more than wise, more than kind of most of the traditional payments processors as as you would think about them.
So it started to become really meaningful and it's fun, interesting journey for sure.
So BNB itself is an EVM compatible chain.
And there were a lot of these other EVM compatible chains that were coming out at the time.
But are you able to also work with things that aren't built on the EVM?
I mean, you can you can move from Ethereum to Solana, from Solana to somewhere else.
And I guess like what that that is a kind of a tough technical problem, right?
Very much so.
So anything that has enough of a virtual machine and enough smart contract logic, you can do.
So we're on a lot of non EVMs today.
We're on Solana and Aptos and SWE and TON and Canton and serve all of these all of these networks.
So where you run into problems is, like, Bitcoin doesn't have enough smart contract logic for you to be able to allow the applications to the arbitrary, so you'd have to end up writing a static validator size.
You'd become more like a wrapped Bitcoin or something, so you could do that.
But for us, it was always like one of the interesting things that we built, which is very unpopular or very, like, even now, very, like, not standard, The entire protocol is just completely immutable.
Like, completely immutable.
We can't we couldn't we can't change it even if we wanted to.
We put up the largest bug bounty in the world when we launched it.
So, like, a $15,000,000 bug bounty, and it has just, like, lived ever since.
So non EVMs are really tricky.
EVMs now are easy.
You have the thing.
It's like, okay, you just reproduce it.
Non EVMs are really, really a big task because it is this measure twice, cut once, have to just be absolutely perfect.
So that's that's like the tricky part.
So yes, we do do them.
I think we, you know, we cover about 170 chains today, so most major networks, but each new non EVM is still just like a really big undertaking.
And of the so, I mean, a 170 chains is a lot.
I don't think any individual is is even transacting over, like, more than five to 10 chains unless you're a crazy power user or or a trader.
I mean, where's where's most of the money flowing right now?
So most of it still is like most of it's EVMs.
Most of it's L2 ecosystem, sort of constrained within there.
What we see so we've moved a lot from like we're very crypto native assets early on and now we're like all of the largest institutions in the world basically.
So what we see now is there's still like Ethereum and Solana is just a de facto.
Everybody wants to be on those too.
And then everything else after that, like I would say Arbitrum comes very closely after that, you have a broader ecosystem that expands out from there and these concentric circles.
But it's still largely I haven't checked recently, but last time I checked, about 50% of our volume still came just within Ethereum and L2 ecosystem.
It's still primarily there.
And so, I mean, that's that's the core premise of LayerZero is you believe like, I mean, maybe you don't, but I'll just say, like, you believe that the future is a ton of different chains potentially transacting in areas that are specialized for them or that have specific use cases for the companies that want to use them.
Your goal is to build a platform that in the future will just connect all of these regardless.
And what is the user is accurate or do you think that we're going to converge on a few chains in the future?
There's always going to be more than one.
That was like, for us, it didn't matter if it's two or 2,000, it doesn't matter.
You still need the connective tissue.
Our big beliefs were that general computing systems are not how you do anything.
If you build modern software today, you have microservices for everything.
You're hyper optimizing on every possible vector to try to get the most performance of whatever it is that you're doing.
So our strong belief is that you're gonna have environments that take really strong trade offs in a given vector and that a generalized system can't compete around.
And I think you see that even now today, this happens all of the time.
And so that thesis has really held true.
I do think there will be you know, I I'm more confident now that, you know, maybe five to 30, not 5,000 long term, unless they look different at least in, like, general environments.
I think there will be some consolidation there.
The biggest thesis was there are gonna be multiple environments.
Assets are going to want to be everywhere, and you need to give a way for that to become seamless.
If that's not seamless, none of this is going to work at scale.
If you had I don't if you remember stablecoins sort of five years ago, right when we were emerging, you would go to any chain and there'd be 10 versions of USDT or USDC, right?
It's like a wormhole wrapped axillary, all of these different versions of the same stablecoin.
And I think you've seen just consolidation.
You go to a chain that's like just USDT or USDC, right?
There is a canonical version for that chain, for that asset.
And so I think you're gonna see the same thing across tokenized equities, across sort of every other piece of tokenization that you just need for all of this to play nice because you don't wanna have tokenized stock version one and not to be able to move it over here and this one uses a different version.
It's just a total nightmare.
So, yeah, I think I think we have, like, very strong conviction in that consolidation.
Were were you involved with those discussions?
I mean, the whole idea of stand standardization is quite difficult.
You have to coordinate a ton of different ton of different actors, get them to agree on something.
I mean, I assume, like, every everybody wants to get there, but what what were those conversations like if you were involved with them?
So, I mean, for us, we we it was never we would always see.
I I find it very interesting.
I think we're seeing we have 91 market share right now for Interop.
We've sort of consolidated Yeah.
Around So we've sort of consolidated an OFT around this token standard that we've won that over time.
But along the way, was 10 different, you know, working groups of all industry participants who are trying to create you know, everyone would was fighting against this along the way.
Like, my view is like, our view always has just been like, wanna work with the absolute best partners in the world and you wanna go, like, super deep and be able to help them build something that, like, meaningfully moves their business forward.
And, like, if you do that, then, like, we we found that you just, like, win over time.
And so, like, when we, like, Tether was a really big one for us and just a massive amount of consolidation.
So like Tether, Athena, Etherfilers, all of these assets that started to get that really fueled growth of volume, of acceptance of all of these things.
And then from there, that was like a point of leverage in every ecosystem.
And now it's just like you can't have competing standards.
It like adds too much friction over time.
And so I think there's been like a very natural consolidation because like every ecosystem doesn't wanna have to have multiple different versions and some assets use this and some assets use this and there's different methods and standards and it only works for certain chains and not for others.
And so, think the industry itself has pushed it forward, which is my preferred way.
I came up My very first job ever was IEEE standards for voice over IP stuff.
After dealing with IEEE for very long, you don't want to be there if you don't have to be.
So standardization is great, but I think it's much better when it can come from a commercial lens and sort of like force the fold versus trying to spend a year to multiple years to get the industry to sort of consolidate on something ahead of time.
I'm curious.
You obviously have to work with a ton of different teams.
You are a focal point here.
I'm curious if you're willing to share what teams have been the best to work with or what you've enjoyed integrating the most.
For us, again, it always think so now, and I'm sure we'll talk about it later, but some of the newer stuff we're doing, I think the risk you run is getting trapped in POC hell forever.
So I think what you don't want is somebody Can define POC?
Yeah, so a proof of concept.
What you don't want is everybody will be loosely interested.
Sometimes they're interested just because they want to talk to you or they want to learn, but they don't actually want to do something or they don't know what they want to do.
They're like, Oh, well, tell us what we should be building.
I think the best people are the people who are very, very intentionally know what they want to do.
I think Tether is a great example because at their time, they had saturated all of the primary chains.
You're talking 160,000,000,000 $170,000,000,000 They were on every major chain, and they thought there was very little value in expanding across the network.
So, Lorenzo and these guys, we pulled together for USDT0, where USDT0's idea was hey, as they were thinking about launching this was, what if you just do something like the longer tail chain?
Stuff that you are not thinking about going right now, you don't think has any immense value, and let's build that together and see what that look like.
And I think from launch within the first year, they grew AUM $20,000,000,000 of AUM growth just on the change you thought had no value is hundreds of millions of dollars just directly to the bottom line.
And I think that became a really strong proving point.
Then you started to see other legacy versions.
So like the USDT that was on Arbitrum got migrated to USDT0, and you've seen this happen more and more.
I think that, no, PayPal prior.
So PYUSD from PayPal is built on top of us.
They were just Ethereum and Solana, but disconnected.
And there were about $300,000,000 of AUM.
And now they're at like 4 or $5,000,000,000 and they're connected the two chains, expanded the networks, etcetera.
So, like, I think what you want is people have a very clear vision of like what they want to do.
Then it's very easy for us to show, here's how you can accomplish that and like look at the business outcomes that matter on the other side.
And so, for us, it's typically been about going really deep.
With EtherFi, we built sync pools for them so they could do They had this problem of like, you wanted to be able to restake on the Layer2s, but basically you would have this seven day window to basically come back and stake because you're missing yield for seven days.
You have all this issue of just how do you get this to happen for all of the ETH that is living there?
So, built sync pools for them to be able to do this.
So a bunch of the teams we've worked really, really closely with, and those ones who we have are doing billions to many billions of dollars a month.
And so for us, the teams that are the best to work with are the ones who just want to go the deepest.
So, Frax, USDT, Athena, EtherFi, PayPal, all the Paxos assets, USDG on Robinhood.
Ondo
Ondo has been amazing.
We built all their token equities.
We helped build Nexus for them.
And so, really, it's like you will find the teams who want to lean in and, like, want to actually build stuff, and then you see, like, the people who have that appetite now how much is used in production is just, night and day versus everybody else who's just like, oh, we wanna launch something.
Like, let's just let's just see how it goes.
That's good.
Thank you for not saying USDC.
It's gonna help out my circle short.
But I I won't I won't make you count on that.
But I I'm curious.
Like, you guys are you guys are obviously building out a ton of new stuff, which I wanna get into, like Atlas and and the new and the new blockchain that you guys are launching.
But before I get there, I wanna ask, because you're focused or maybe, you know, you you're focused on building new products, Do you feel like the bridging protocol is in a good place right now?
Or are you going to continue to try to improve it?
Or is it just like, this is good.
Like we've actually reached a point where we are at a very usable product.
We're in a really good place, and now we can turn our attention elsewhere.
Like, I mean, for example, one person commented that Ethereum transactions still take three minutes to complete on LayerZero.
Like, are there areas to improve or is it like we're on the blockchain, we're focused on our settlement product now?
So for us, it's actually, we're totally agnostic because the technology, Ethereum transactions can take one second to complete, but you're taking some finality risk.
So it's very easy to integrate.
Every asset issuer basically defines this for themselves.
You'll see some asset issuers when you're leaving certain chains, they'll take thirty minutes and other ones will take thirty seconds.
So ultimately your pricing finality risk, there's always stuff that is evolving on how you do verification.
So ZK has been a huge area of research around this and how you deal with finality on certain chains and how you can guarantee stronger sets of finality.
So all that stuff is evolving.
But again, if you look at the core messaging protocol, I'll say, it's pretty set in stone in terms of, again, we're 90 plus percent market share.
You're moving 10 plus billion dollars a month.
It's going to continue to improve, but I think what people want now from the product side, it really is becoming you see this, like, intense get a lot more volume these days just in general.
Like, how do you batch that and take, like, a secure message and basically say, gonna I'm price the finality risk.
I'm gonna deliver this in four hundred milliseconds on the other chain, and I'm just gonna price it in.
LayerZero is built for single messages.
You'll have like, you move, we've had $800,000,000 almost a billion dollars moved in a single transaction.
So it's incredibly efficient to do that.
But if you want to go from USDT on chain A to swap into an asset on chain B and do that incredibly quickly, well, a bunch of the stuff isn't structured for there.
So, products that our customers are looking for, they wanna be able to do swaps in size, like 50 to hundreds of millions of dollars, cross asset swaps, across stables, across a bunch of different things.
So, that is a big piece of it.
How do you solve this?
How do you solve the regulatory side?
So, we had to go through NYDFS approval for PayPal and to be able to do that.
So, how are you able to provide that to a bunch of these assets?
And then the third is you see now groups like FOMO are doing this incredibly well on revenue.
It's just very quick, any to any asset swap, just be able to land transactions and submit, provide fast and immediate transaction sets to the customer base downstream.
So, think all of those things from the product side are things we think about a lot.
How can you give better execution?
How can you actually structure liquidity or execution across multiple assets?
How can you actually do that in size and what does it look like?
It's very easy to do it for a thousand dollar customer order.
It's much harder to do it for like $100,000,000 slugs between stable coins.
So all this stuff is stuff we spend a lot of time thinking about, but that's just more how do you provide better service to the customer base who's building on top of us.
Pure messaging is pretty solid.
I mean, have to say crypto is so much easier to use today than it was even two years ago.
It's amazing.
You mentioned FOMO.
There are all these other apps that are coming out that you can transact cross chain.
I mean, even when you open up MetaMask today versus four years ago, you actually get to see all of your assets across chains.
And then, like,
I remember before you had to click through and, like, change the RPC to make sure that you had you know, your assets were still in the right places, and it was, like, such a big pain in the ass to even just track your assets across chains, let alone actually transact with them.
I mean, dude, Bryan, I have so many questions for you.
But one thing that stood out to me was this concept of, pricing finality, And that leads me to believe that have has there ever been a problem that you've run into with finality?
I mean, maybe you can tell us a story there.
People like me, for example, and a few others often think that this is it's silly.
Like, nothing could nothing bad is gonna happen anyway.
Just, like, let the asset move over.
Like, Ethereum's not gonna roll back a transaction.
The assets are gonna be fine.
Who cares if it takes three minutes?
Just do it in thirty seconds, and the finality will come.
But have you ever run into an actual issue with it?
So I will say they're like, it's getting a lot better over time.
Re reorgs are are generally much less frequent and much smaller.
But there was a time where Polygon reorged 200 plus block reorgs, like, every other day.
We've seen ZK chains roll back, like, hundreds of thousands of blocks.
There was just a really large reorg on one of the EVM chains that had a security incident.
Should we
get into that?
What happened there?
I think that's interesting.
There was one of the large DeFi protocols got hacked on Cronos.
You see this happen, this is happening a bunch of times, but they had to have the decision of, Hey, do you allow the hack to exist or do you roll the chain back to a point like pre hack?
And obviously there's a bunch of downstream implications of when you think about this.
What assets got bridged off?
What does all of that look like?
Because when you're rolling this back, you've already committed transactions on the other side.
So, definitely happens.
Luckily now, most of the stuff, like the highest volume of things being transacted are stablecoins and stablecoins just have a layer enforcement.
They can freeze assets.
They can do things that you can't do on just totally permissionless assets.
So I think there has been some ability to rectify some of the issues to freeze seized funds as they hit other chains and before they hit other chains, blacklist certain wallets to do all of these things.
But do think, you know, we probably see every three months, yeah, probably three to four months, you'll see a chain have like a meaningful rollback.
So it definitely still matters and it definitely still happens and people are still pricing, bypassing that to provide a better customer experience.
And so when you move it to now where a bunch of other stuff are starting to do some of this, you're basically shifting the risk from a protocol as a whole or the asset as a whole to a specific counterparty, a solver or person filling the thing on the other side who's bearing the risk.
That makes a ton of sense.
So, I mean, it's good.
You guys have done, I think, a reasonably good job at avoiding some pitfalls.
Obviously, avoiding all of them is quite difficult in crypto.
You guys are running billions of dollars of volume through your protocol.
But what people really care about today is, are you making money?
Like, you guys have a token associated with with with the protocol.
All of, I think, the top assets right now have a path to making money for, you know, the token holders or shareholders or however you wanna call them.
I mean, what what is your plan for making sure that ZERO maintains value?
是的。
Yep.
So I think this is worth having the conversation after we talk about Atlas and ZERO because I think it will all converge together.
So let's definitely do it.
I'll walk you through all of the pieces of that stack and where it all comes together.
好的。
Okay.
So why we just get into this now?
So we talked about the cross chain protocol.
Originally, guys mentioned that you guys are building a blockchain itself.
You're adding to the you're adding to the thousands of chains that exist.
And I'm curious why you decided to do that instead of just allowing other people just connecting other blockchains?
Why build your own?
We didn't want to, I will say.
We definitely had no intention to set out and launch a blockchain, not even in our radar.
I would say almost four years ago now, my cofounder or CTO, Raz, really he was really upset with, like, the state of Ethereum, right, and the state of Layer twos in general and the fact that, you know, all of all of the volume in ETH's roadmap was, like, pushing everything to Layer twos.
But, basically, like, all of them were just these upgradeable contracts that, you know, were were not they were positioned in a very different way.
And so he was he was literally every day complaining to me, and I was so sick of it.
I was like, All right, dude.
You're so freaking smart.
What would you do?
He drew out this architecture, and we debated it for multiple days of just like, you know, what what about this?
What about this?
How can I break it?
How can I break it?
And at the end, he was like like, I was just completely sold.
I was like, very clearly, this is this is the way that everything is going to play out, and this is like the end state for how a bunch of this stuff will look like.
And there's a bunch of things in there that that I mean, we were directionally right on all of it.
The things we were wrong about.
We thought ZK would be like off the shelf.
We're like, ZK is gonna be totally commoditized.
Technology is gonna move super fast, and you're just gonna be able to pull it off the shelf and like, this is what this will look like.
And I was like, not at all the case.
Even now, we just announced everything we're doing.
I think Eats roadmap for doing even close to the same as you're like ten, fifteen years away.
So we're just so far away from what we thought it would be.
And so I would say the first couple of years were just like, we had this picture of what we wanted to do, and then we had this breakthrough of QMDB, Quick Miracle Database, was our chief architect, went on paternity leave.
So he had a baby, and he left.
And he just like had some time and he was just like obsessing over this problem.
And we came up with this new database structure, QMDB.
And it is like many, many, many orders of magnitude over state of the art sort of prior at the time.
And so when we had this, the question was like, okay, well, now this becomes very interesting.
And so then downstream from that, we published a bunch of different papers.
But like Cliffs, what we got at the end of doing this, we thought early on, maybe we're like 10,000 transactions per second, like that's something you could do.
We ended up at like 2,000,000 transactions per second, like even with the EVM overhead, like a million transactions per second with all of the overhead of the EVM.
And we're just like blown away from that side.
So I would say there's four major breakthroughs along the way.
And that's when we really started getting serious.
And when we had, like you know, we found crits in almost every major non EVM we've ever integrated.
So we like I think we've gotten deeper on the actual VMs of every other blockchain and every other approach than almost any other group in the world and actually needing to integrate the endpoint into all of this, understand the trade offs that people are making, understand how to do this.
And so we got there, we got this system and we said, Oh, this is actually really amazing.
QMDB today now is being rolled out in every major performance system in the world.
So Tempo is rolling this out through commonware.
Anybody who's trying to do performing blockchains is effectively using this structure that we invented.
And so, then it became, okay, what do you actually do?
Uniswap and Avi certainly don't need 2,000,000 transactions per second.
That's not really helpful.
And that's when we really started going down this path with a bunch of our partners now.
What actually needs this?
What needs it really is just finance and payments.
Those are the only two things that matter.
So when we talk about ZERO and we talk about what are we launching?
What are we launching?
We're launching a basically ZK-first blockchain built from the ground up, probably the first one truly built from the ground up in a very, very, very long time at multiple millions of transactions per second at incredibly low latency.
And on top of that, the only things that we really care about is finance, so markets and payments, and that's it.
So on the market side, we're building Atlas, which we've announced, and this is basically As we announced, we announced a blockchain, our big partners we
have to understand, Atlas is built on top of the ZERO blockchain.
But does the protocol that you've built prior, the messaging protocol, have any connection to the ZERO blockchain other than just connecting it to the rest of the world?
So just connecting to the rest of the world, and then it is the interface for how you communicate within the blockchain.
So one of the unique things about ZERO is that on top of it so if you think about Ethereum, there's like a beacon chain that exists, and there's a bunch of globally distributed validators.
Then on top of that, they can support a single application.
That application is the EVM.
So actually, EVM is application that is rolling state down to the beacon chain that is holding state.
And so zero because of the ZK stuff, which is really just compression, and SVID, which is this other algorithm that we've invented.
You can basically now hold multiple of these things.
So rather than having one general purpose environment, you can build something completely from the ground up.
So when you talk about Atlas, Atlas is a trading environment meant to scale to many millions of transactions per second at roughly ten millisecond block times.
And that basically gets rolled down to zero.
LayerZero, the protocol, is just connecting it to the rest of the world, so all the assets will be there.
The interface is how each of these zones or environments communicate with each other, but otherwise not totally connected.
Okay, understood.
And I'm trying to wrap my head around Atlas itself.
First of all, who is the end user of Atlas?
Who's actually interacting with it and what's getting done?
Is it like a Hyperliquid would be built on top of it?
Is it that Atlas itself is a system that you're gonna be trading on?
Atlas
Atlas itself is the exchange, right?
In terms of it is the settlement clearing matching sort of like risk credit layer all in a single stack.
So Atlas is the environment of how trades are ingested, they're executed, how they're held in, say, all of these things.
On top of that, we've sort of structured it to one where we're not going to have our own front end.
So we're not launching a public facing exchange, but what this became technology.
So partners we announced when we announced on February 10 is the DTCC, ICE, so parent company in the New York Stock Exchange, Citadel, on and on.
So really TradFi heavy partners.
And so for us, we view there being two lenses on top of Atlas.
One being open Atlas public to the world.
And so this is open and permissionless markets broadly available to anybody.
Then you have institutional markets, which are really As you think about many of the largest exchanges in The United States, as you think about tokenization as a trend, as you think about this trend happening, this is access controlled.
It's permissioned.
It's typically KYC.
It's being opened up to a set of registered broker dealers, although those rules have just changed slightly to where now it can be opened up to a broader set.
If you want to think about it as domestic and non domestic or open and institutional, that's how you have this split emerging.
But what's going to happen is you'll have I'll just use it as a hypothetical.
You'd have ICE launch basically ICE markets.
They would launch this on top of Atlas itself.
好的。
Okay.
Understood.
And I guess the one question is, are they going to?
What did you mean when you say you have partnerships?
What were those conversations?
Did they say that they're gonna be actually building on top of the platform or is it just that they're invested?
是的。
Yep.
So some of this, we've announced.
Some of this, we haven't announced.
So I will be as specific as I can without breaching anything.
So most we we've we've talked about all the announcements.
A bunch a bunch of groups invested sort of 50 ish, anywhere from 10 to $100,000,000 basically.
So investing There
was so many that put in $100,000,000 into this.
So yes, and then 50 is the next largest, and then 30, and then yeah.
是的。
So yes.
好的。
Okay.
Does name rhyme with men?
各位?
Guys?
Again, some of this we've announced publicly, some of this we have not announced publicly, but really, really large institutions putting in very, very meaningful checks.
Buying tokens, some had token and equity split, but primarily tokens for the majority of them.
Then the question is, what did we want with all of these partners?
One thing I think we really focused on
Are these tokens locked?
是的。
Yes.
Yeah, for almost all of them.
Some of them have vesting schedules, some of them are locked for x period of time.
So it depends on the group.
Understood.
那么
So
what did we want?
One thing we knew, we're technologists at heart.
I don't have a background.
I haven't spent my entire life in finance.
When we were building LayerZero, like, I'll say probably the best example.
When we were raising our round, so we raised two at 25 from friends and family.
We raised 6.4 at 50, and our only focus in that round was like, I want the largest or second largest stakeholder of every major DeFi protocol.
I want the people who can, like, influence conversations that we have to have.
And then we raised at a billion and 3,000,000,000.
And in those rounds, it was just very clear.
Like, they were co led by a sixteen z and Sequoia.
And I said, like, listen.
I don't want you to tell me how to build.
We know exactly what we're building and how to build it.
What I don't know is how to build a world class company.
And I think that's really paid off a ton in aligning with the groups who have the domain knowledge, aligning with the best partners.
For us, what we wanted out of this is we know the core technology can do something for markets that can't be done right now, from latency profile, from throughput, from everything.
You're talking going from thousands or 10,000 transactions per second to going to millions of transactions per second at a completely different latency profile.
What we don't know is how all of you are thinking about this, how you're actually bringing to production, So that's what we wanted.
We wanted the knowledge from the Citadel, from DTC, etc.
What these groups wanted primarily is where does all of this live?
And that's evolved right now.
What does actually the landscape look like?
Are perps coming to The US as an institutional product?
How does this evolve in the tokenization side?
What does it actually mean to have tokenized trading?
Is this trend going to continue?
Obviously, in the eighteen months since we've started a lot of these conversations, I don't think anybody questions that anymore in terms of the volumes that are actually being done for a lot of this stuff relative to the broader commodities pool, etc.
That was the initial group.
We have four, five of the exchanges in the world are actively deployed right now in production, testing on Testnet, and rolling out towards a real production release.
Will see and there is a bunch of uncertainty.
Clarity would have made it a lot easier.
CFTC and SEC are giving some rules around
Were those SEC rules helpful for you?
SEC rules were helpful.
CFTC also.
So knowing what licenses you need, knowing if an FCM can go directly, knowing like, okay, does every single participant who's offering markets need to have a full DCO?
What does all of this actually look like?
And so there's a bunch of clarity on the licensing side of things Mhmm.
Which I think has been, like, very helpful.
There's still a little bit of a little bit of contradiction, I should say, between some of the prior no actions that were given and the new set of SEC guidance that were given in terms of where you'll need an ATS or what this looks like.
So I will say it's all moving in a very positive direction from the regulatory clarity side, which is amazing.
Huge, huge, huge progress from that side.
Four to five of the largest exchanges in the world, all actively live right now, rolling out markets on test net, doing all of this stuff.
Multiple of those have committed to going into public markets, so we will see this transition into public markets on Atlas in terms of like I should say public.
Until like permission to markets and production sort of public main net.
The timeline for that is just going to be when they have 100% complete regulatory certainty.
And so I think what you're going to see is early on, we have 20 front ends right now.
So again, remember Atlas is the core.
It is the trading engine itself.
We're not running our own front ends.
You have like 20 front ends that are basically building to be able to offer this up and basically able to be the front end or the touch point for the consumer or for anybody who's interacting with this.
So 20 plus front ends were deploying on open Atlas and testing now, and then the large exchanges.
And so I think you'll see open Atlas markets come broad and immediate, and then you will see a constant stream of progress on the institutional front, including, again, multiple of the largest US based institutions coming to market.
Yeah, without naming any names specifically or giving anything too much more specific than that, is not like, oh, hey, let's follow along, or this seems cool, let's put our name on it.
It is like right now deployed on Testnet, actively testing, saying when and how can we take this into production.
So many more questions for you, but first of all, the people that bought the tokens, the investors, are they also invested in the equity of your company?
So there are some splits.
A bunch took token only.
Some took token and equity.
And one group no, actually, they ended up taking token equity both.
So, everybody has at least token exposure.
Some have exposure to both, but the largest two checks were token only.
Okay, interesting.
And so I think maybe let's lead into the next question now that we've talked about Atlas.
You have this entire infrastructure built.
Where does the 0 token fit into the ecosystem?
There's been a lot of talk around like, when is the fee switch gonna come on?
It's overwhelmingly positive, but quorum never gets reached.
I mean, what's what's the plan here?
对。
Yep.
So try to just make it super clear now.
So LayerZero, the protocol, messaging protocol, has the fee switch.
The fee switch, again, every vote overwhelmingly positive seems like that will be turned on.
I've sort of mentally said, I think within the next eighteen months, I think you're sort of, like, looking at that time frame for that.
For ZERO, it's just, like, very clear.
0, z r 0 is the native gas token of the chain.
So all priority fees, all block space, all everything in terms of gas is 0 directly.
Atlas
Atlas itself has your embedded set of trading fees.
A bunch of that goes to the front end who is offering this up.
And then after that, 75% of the remainder goes directly just to buying and burning 0.
And so you should think about this at like of an edit.
If the fee schedule matches sort of what is in market today, this should be about, call it 1.2 basis points of every dollar traded on platform just goes directly to buying and burning zero.
And that's still gonna mean, that system, because of the other cost savings, is still gonna be cheaper than the traditional financial system?
Or what's
So So and again, it it depends it depends on what you're looking at.
If you're talking like BTC perps, right?
So more like open, broad, traditional perps like, yeah, your blended average rate across most venues is somewhere in the order of about three basis points.
If you're talking Forex or equities, that fee schedule might look very different, but volumes may end up being drastically higher.
So it depends on where you're looking for.
But I think calling it a basis point, 1.2 basis points is sort of our mental model right now.
It depends a little bit on how some of the institutional markets are going to roll out and to where that fee lands.
But 75% of all fees that are generated by Atlas itself are just directly buying and burning ZERO.
So that is, like, very clear and very yeah.
It should be clear cut.
That's pretty good.
And and and and Atlas itself, I mean, I wanna talk about how it's gonna impact maybe a viewer here.
When I go log on to Fidelity or I go log on to Robinhood and I and I make a trade, it does feel pretty seamless for me right now.
Like there's not a ton of, you know, there's not a ton of badness, let's say, with with with this experience other than the fact that some when I sell a stock, it takes two days for the cash to sell to my account.
That's quite annoying.
But what what is Atlas gonna do to make those traditional experiences better, if if anything?
Like, are you ever gonna have are you ever gonna be the back end to a Fidelity, the back end to to to a brokerage?
Is that the way the world's going?
是的。
So, yes.
Definitely, multiple of sort of names, similar names, etcetera, are, like, actively involved in the question.
If you look at stablecoins, very interesting to see.
Domestic stablecoin use has trailed international stablecoin use by almost a decade now, honestly, in terms of real traction.
Now, just now, you're starting to see a traction.
You're starting to see sort of the banks are worried about that's why tokenized bank deposits are being pushed so heavily about what stablecoins might do to the deposit base of banks and what this actually looks like and where tokenization moves, etcetera.
Whereas internationally, have 500,000,000 plus users, you have $300,000,000,000 worth of stablecoins.
They've grown 60 plus x in the last six years alongside RWAs, which have grown like 2000x in the last six years.
And so I think you're going to see a bunch of stuff happen internationally that has started to put pressure on the domestic side.
比如说DTCC。
So you take DTCC.
DTCC has direct mandate to tokenize $100,000,000,000,000 worth of assets.
It was completely unhinged as a mandate when you think about it of, Okay, actually a huge amount of asset base is going to be tokenized.
There is movement in this way.
And then the question is, What does it actually look like?
So I think when you talk to the institutions, there are two things that are immediately interesting right now.
One is perps as a product.
Purps as an instrument and what it has done internationally and the volumes that it's generating now become very interesting.
Then the same so is that like what perps as a product within The United States?
What where sort of like, where does that live?
What does that look like?
And then the second is, like, is there room to change the existing model broadly?
Like, touch more international.
You look at something like ICE has six clearing houses that span around the globe.
Customers need to keep sort of funds in all six of them.
Have you know, if you're talking about a single stack that does settlement and clearing and matching and credit, prime brokerages alone is $50,000,000,000 business, right?
The cost structure starts to become pretty hard to ignore for most groups.
You look at perps as a product right now and how much some of the venues are making relative to traditional exchanges.
It's just like they're doing basis points of the volume overall, but making double digit percentages of the net profit of the trad exchanges.
I think there's a bunch of stuff that is interesting and in flight and happening.
To answer the question directly, are brokerages going to open this up?
Is it actually you're gonna have, like, Trad exchanges opening up tokenized products, perps, etcetera, on these rails to your normal mainstream brokers?
Like, 100%, yes.
That is going to happen.
The user ever actually see it and notice?
Know, we'll see.
How much of that just gets abstracted away, but 100% that is happening.
好的。
Okay.
That that's good.
Do you I wanna also talk about what you view the future of this industry looking like.
I mean, we've seen a tremendous amount of tokenized assets come on chain.
Most of these are equities that already trade elsewhere that are put in some sort of SPV or tokenized and then issued issued on the chain.
In the conversations that you're having, do you think that it's likely or possible that in the future equity like, if a company issues equity, it'll just immediately be on chain?
Like, in ten, fifteen, twenty, thirty years, are all IPOs gonna end up on chain?
Or is this just something to appeal to a niche set of an audience that wants their assets on chain and there's they're always gonna be these two parallel systems running?
So I think on a long enough time horizon, like, yes.
Definitely.
So I think all of this started, what does an institute do?
What do any of these groups want?
Most of them, the tokenized all of tokenization today is basically just a distribution engine.
There was a pool of capital that was sufficiently large, and it was like, okay, well, now it's multiple hundreds of billions to trillions of dollar asset pool.
Yes, if I'm selling high yield private equity fund or if I'm selling whatever it may be, I'm very happy to just distribute that in the system.
I think stablecoins again have crossed the Rubicon in terms of Lindy adoption.
You look at Visa stablecoin volumes, you look at what Stripe is doing, you look at all of this stuff.
This is just getting integrated more and more into traditional flows in a way that is slowly but very steadily eating away at existing systems and our legacy systems.
So I think, again, where we are in tokenization today, excluding stablecoins, you're trailing by five plus years from where we are in the rest of the industry.
But I think very clearly it is going to start happening.
I think if it is a catalyst that pushes again, a consolidation of some of these components that are separate today that don't need to be an ability to distribute to a more international audience in a way that regulatory framework evolves around, I think all of these things are very, very strong drivers.
So I think, will an IPO happen on chain?
I think on chain and off chain, won't be a difference anymore.
I think the rails are just, again, slowly being replumbed in a ton of this stuff in the way that stablecoins themselves are just completely starting to cannibalize some of the existing rail sets.
I think you're gonna see them more and more.
So we haven't talked about yet as the payment side of 0 and some of the interesting there.
But I think you're going to see it in a way that just can't exist elsewhere.
So there's a bunch of really interesting stuff happening.
When do you think you're gonna go live with these products?
We have publicly said fall this year.
So that gives us a very narrow window of the next two months.
It is fall right now.
对。
Yes.
In fall, yeah.
So we're right there.
Again, like Testnet is live.
We're talking right now on Atlas on Testnet.
We're talking right now, we have a stable version at two hundred thousand transactions per second at sub one millisecond latency.
We have a smaller version at 10,000 transactions per second, that's 400 microsecond latency.
And then we have a research prototype that's at twenty eight microsecond P50 latency with only forty microsecond P99 latency.
So institutions have been hugely impressed.
The most common feedback we've gotten is, We didn't think this was possible.
And, Oh, wow.
We have never been able to do this.
We have a bunch of them who took their existing workflows.
And this can be for how you distribute data around tokenized equities, and it can be actually just like the trading engine itself on chain, like just CLOB on chain.
In both of them, they're quoting hundreds to thousands of times X more performance than what they had before.
And so I think we're like, we feel we're in a great state right now.
We're talking now whether partners want to open up Test Net to the public and people can come and play with it.
But right now, the partners, all the front ends, again, 20 plus front ends, bunch of largest institutions, they're all on live testing.
From a technology perspective, feel great, feel like we're pretty much there.
From a release perspective, it's just like aligning go to market, getting all the partners together, and making sure there is all of the small pieces.
Launching a chain is not easy.
It's a lot different than launching a product, and you have to make it just incredibly easy to get assets in.
You have to make it incredibly easy to do all of these things, and then you have custodians and everything upstream for all of the partners that you want that you have to sort out.
And so there's a bunch of debt that's going through just to making sure you have the best possible launch.
I think
What what are your what what are your plans for getting people to come on the chain?
They say they want.
什么?
What?
Because I assume you don't just want institutions on it.
Want your average, you want the people listening to this podcast, you want the people on Twitter to come on as well.
当然。
Of course.
I think one of the benefits is we've got about $150,000,000,000 worth of assets today on top of it.
It's very easy to open that up to the world and connect to ZERO.
So I think getting assets in will be quite easy.
I think when you're talking about your larger For any user, it's gonna be seamless.
It can be a wallet, a bridge, it's gonna be easy.
You'll just deposit.
It will be a non factor.
When you're talking about your larger institutional groups, your fund managers, anybody who is, again, using regular users of custodians of Fireblocks, etcetera, where it's just getting all of the infrastructure set up for that to be just very seamless and easy for them.
It is getting the exchanges on board.
It's getting sort of everything across the board, just make it as easy as possible.
But for the end user, it's gonna be really We've spent the last six years making this stuff seamless.
It will be very trivial to deposit.
Bryan,
Bryan, I'm super excited for the launch.
I mean, you heard it here.
We're launching in September.
It's gonna it's gonna be it's gonna be fun, and I really appreciate you spending the time to talk with me today.
And, hopefully, everyone found it.
I think this was a great conversation.
I really, really enjoyed it myself, and I'm gonna definitely be poking around LayerZero.
So thank you, Brian.
Appreciate
Thank you very much.
I'm looking forward to, you know, in another short period here being able to come and like, alright, all those names I couldn't mention, like, here they all are.
Let's talk
about it.
We're gonna we're gonna we're gonna have to have you back on once you can talk more publicly about these things because one thing I do wanna get into, I mean, we could probably do a whole episode on your discussions and learnings and what you found interesting from all these all these people because, I mean, I think a lot of people just don't understand what's going on behind the scenes right now.
So we'll have to have you back on once you can talk about it.
Deep, deep in the weeds.
Looking forward to it.
是的,Bryan。
Yeah, Bryan.
I mean, it's like the it's it's just crazy.
The the world the world the world has changed so much since we first since we first got into crypto, so his LayerZero.
The difference between, like, our early days of BD and doing BD with SushiSwap to now spending, you know, a 100% of my time with with Fidelity, with BlackRock, with NICEE, with all these different groups.
It's just night night and day different.
Totally different world.
Has been really fun and enjoyable, but, yeah, it's it's been a big it's been a great transition.
I mean, it's a sign that we've made it.
当然。
For sure.
