你好。
Hello.
这里是 BBC 学习英语出品的六分钟英语。
This is six Minute English from BBC Learning English.
我是尼尔。
I'm Neil.
我是皮帕。
And I'm Pippa.
分享你的Netflix密码、谎报年龄、不付公交费,这些都是日常生活中常见的作弊行为。
Sharing your Netflix password, lying about your age or not paying the bus fare are a few examples of cheating in daily life.
但有一件事,大家普遍认为绝对不能作弊,那就是体育比赛。
But there's one place where cheating is usually considered wrong, and that's sport.
在体育比赛中使用兴奋剂——俗称‘服药’——通常都被视为不道德的行为。
Cheating in sport through the use of performance enhancing drugs, informally called doping, is normally considered wrong.
你去问问美国自行车传奇人物兰斯·阿姆斯特朗,他就是因为使用违禁药物被逐出体坛的。
Just ask American cycling legend Lance Armstrong, who is thrown out of the sport for using banned substances.
但今年早些时候,一场体育赛事彻底颠覆了人们对体育用药的争论。
But earlier this year, a sporting event took place which turned the debate about drugs in sport upside down.
接下来请听BBC世界服务《全球故事》的阿斯玛·哈利德为我们做介绍。
Here's Asma Khalid from BBC World Services The Global Story to explain.
这个周末,来自世界各地的顶尖运动员齐聚内华达州拉斯维加斯,参加一项前所未有的赛事——增强运动会。
This weekend, elite athletes from around the world are descending on Las Vegas, Nevada for the first of its kind sporting competition known as the Enhanced Games.
有点像奥运会,但只限于游泳、短跑和举重这三个项目。
It's kind of like the Olympics, but only for swimming, sprinting and weightlifting.
目标就是打破世界纪录。
The aim is to break world records.
事实上,有些参赛者曾经是奥运选手,拿过奖牌,现在为了奖金和荣誉一较高下。
In fact, some of these competitors are former Olympians, medalists battling it out for money and glory.
但有一个关键的不同之处。
But there's one big difference.
最大的不同在于,增强运动会允许运动员使用在职业体育中被禁用的兴奋剂。
The big difference is that the Enhanced Games allow athletes to use performance enhancing drugs that are banned in professional sports.
在这项被称为‘兴奋剂奥运会’的赛事里,类固醇、生长激素和兴奋剂都是被允许的。
In these Games, nicknamed the Doping Olympics, steroids, growth hormones and stimulants are all okay.
你是个体育迷,尼尔。
You're a big sports fan, Neil.
你会想看运动员服药后参加的比赛吗?
Would you enjoy watching a sport where the athletes have taken drugs?
不会,我不想看。
No, I wouldn't.
我觉得这样不公平。
I really don't think that's fair.
我觉得所有运动员都应该在同等条件下开始和比赛。
I think we need to know that all the athletes start and compete from the same level.
是的。
Yeah.
这么说确实有道理。
I guess that makes sense.
我平时不太看体育比赛,所以可能也注意不到区别。
I don't really watch that many sports, so I guess I wouldn't notice the difference.
但如果你真的很热爱体育,肯定在乎规则吧?
But if you're really into sport, care about the rules, right?
是的,当然。
Yes, absolutely.
在本期节目中,我们将深入探讨备受争议的‘增强型赛事’,同时学习一些实用的新词汇和表达。
And in this episode, we'll dive into the controversial world of the Enhanced Games, learning some useful new words and phrases along the way.
别忘了,所有词汇、测验和练习资料都可以在我们的网站 bbclearningenglish.com 上找到。
And remember, you'll find all the vocabulary plus a quiz and a worksheet on our website bbclearningenglish.com.
不过我现在有个问题想问你,尼尔。
But now I have a question for you, Neil.
你提到了那位著名的体育作弊者兰斯·阿姆斯特朗。
You mentioned the famous sporting cheat, Lance Armstrong.
在被揭发之前,兰斯·阿姆斯特朗一共赢得过多少次著名的环法自行车赛?
But how many times did Lance Armstrong win the famous race, the Tour de France, before he was finally caught out?
是a)五次,b)六次,还是c)七次?
Was it a) five b) six or c) seven?
哦,这个数字可不少。
Oh, well, it was a lot.
那我选 c) 七次吧。
So I think I'll go for c) seven.
好吧,答案我们会在节目结束时揭晓。
Well, we'll find out the answer at the end of the programme.
说增强运动会引发争议,这真的一点都不夸张。
Now, it's no exaggeration to say that the Enhanced Games are controversial.
毕竟,像世界反兴奋剂机构这样的组织,几十年来一直在打击体育中的增强表现药物。
After all, organisations like the World Anti Doping Agency have spent decades fighting performance enhancing drugs in sport.
以下是BBC体育编辑丹·罗南在世界服务节目《全球故事》中的发言。
Here's BBC Sports editor Dan Rowan on world service programme, The Global Story.
我认为可以说,这是近年来体育界最具分歧和争议的赛事之一。
I think it's fair to say it's one of the most divisive and controversial events that the world of sport has seen for a long time.
这个赛事允许选手在医疗监督下使用其他主流体育项目中被禁止的增强表现药物。
It's an event where performance enhancing drugs banned elsewhere in mainstream sport, of course, are actually allowed to be taken by the competitors under medical supervision.
丹·罗南说,说增强运动会引发争议,这确实不为过。
Dan Rowan says it's fair to say the Enhanced Games are controversial.
他用‘可以说’这个说法来引出一个他认为平衡且合理的观点,那就是这些赛事存在争议。
He uses the phrase it's fair to say to introduce a statement that he considers to be balanced and reasonable that the Games are controversial.
丹还把这项赛事描述为‘分裂性的’,这个词的意思是引发人们之间严重分歧。
Dan also describes the Games as divisive an adjective that means causing a lot of disagreement between people.
这种分歧很大程度上源于对增强表现药物本身的使用。
Much of this disagreement is about the use of performance enhancing drugs themselves.
赛事主办方指出,所有药物都经过美国食品药品监督管理局批准,并在医疗监督下公开使用,他们认为这比其他赛事中秘密使用药物更安全。
The game's organisers point out that all drugs are approved by the US Food and Drug Agency and taken openly under medical supervision, which they say makes them safer than when they are taken secretly at competitions elsewhere.
但也有许多批评者,正如丹·罗万在BBC世界服务节目《全球故事》中所提到的。
But there are many critics too, as Dan Rowan outlined to BBC World Service's The Global Story.
但批评者当然认为,这突破了道德底线,树立了极坏的榜样,因为它可能让使用兴奋剂变得正常化。
But the critics, of course, say that this crosses an ethical line, that it sets a dreadful example because it risks normalising doping.
这可能会损害体育的公正性,也可能对参赛者的健康构成危险。
It could harm the integrity therefore of sports and it and it could be dangerous to the health of those taking part.
对赛事的批评者来说,使用兴奋剂已经越过了道德界限。
For the Games critics, doping crosses an ethical line.
短语‘越过底线’指的是开始做出不符合社会规范的行为。
The phrase to cross the line means to start behaving in a way that's not socially acceptable.
这些批评者认为,这项赛事树立了坏榜样,也就是说,它会促使其他人也效仿不良行为。
These critics say the Games set a bad example, meaning that they encourage others to behave badly as well.
为什么会这样呢,皮帕?
Why is that, Pippa?
这是因为批评者认为,这项赛事让运动中使用增强表现的药物变得司空见惯。
Well, it's because critics argue the Games normalise the use of performance drugs in sport.
所谓‘司空见惯’,就是把过去不被接受的事情当作正常或可以接受的事情来看待。
If you normalise something, you treat it as normal or acceptable when previously it wasn't.
但鉴于双方观点都很坚定,这场争论远未结束。
But with arguments strongly held on both sides, the debate is far from over.
那么,尼尔,在听了双方的说法之后,你的看法有改变吗?
So Neil, have you changed your opinion after hearing both sides of the story?
没有,我没有。
No, I haven't.
我觉得这根本不公平。
I think it's just not fair.
如果你在体育比赛中都不讲公平,那还比什么劲?
And I think if you're not fair in sport, what's the point?
来听听你的答案吧,尼尔,我刚才那道题。
Well, let's hear the answer to my quiz question, Neil.
我问你兰斯·阿姆斯特朗赢过多少次环法自行车赛,正确答案是c,从1999年到2005年连续七次夺冠。
I asked you how many times Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France and it was c) seven times consecutively between 1999 and 2005.
当然,我们现在都知道他当时用了提高表现的药物。
Of course, we now know that there were performance enhancing drugs involved.
好了,现在我们来回顾一下今天学过的词汇,第一个是‘使用违禁药物来提升运动表现’,也就是兴奋剂。
Okay, so now it's time to recap the vocabulary we've learned starting with doping using banned drugs to perform better in sporting competitions.
你可以用‘可以说’这个表达来引出一个平衡、合理或真实的观点。
You can use the phrase it's fair to say to introduce a statement you consider to be balanced, reasonable or true.
如果某件事具有争议性,就会让人意见不一。
If something is divisive, it causes disagreement between people.
短语 'cross the line' 指的是行为变得不可接受。
The idiom cross the line means to start behaving in an unacceptable way.
如果你带坏头,就是用你的行为让别人也跟着学坏。
If you set a bad example, you behave in a way that encourages others to behave badly.
最后,'normalise something' 指的是把以前不被接受的事情当成正常事来看待。
And finally, to normalise something means to treat it as normal or acceptable when previously it wasn't.
明白了。
Okay.
好了,我们这六分钟又到时间了。
Once again, our six minutes are up.

But for now, it's goodbye.
再见。
