005 - A Phrase A Day: The Ball Is In Your Court

本集简介

Hi there! Looking for the perfect phrase to use in any situation? Look no further than "the ball is in your court"! This expression is all about taking control and putting the responsibility on someone else:) You can use it when you've done your part and now it's up to someone else to make a move. Here are some examples: I've done my part, now the ball is in your court to make the final presentation. Your boss has asked you to come up with a plan for the project. The ball is in your court now. I've asked her out on a date, but she hasn't responded yet. The ball is in her court. So next time you're in a situation where you've done what you can and it's up to someone else to take the next step, remember to use the classic phrase "the ball is in your court" and let the responsibility fall where it may!

今天这期,我们来聊聊这句话:the ball is in your court。

In today's episode, we are discussing the phrase the ball is in your court.

Speaker 0

这句话原本是体育领域的说法。

Now this phrase is a sports thing.

Speaker 0

这说法在网球里特别常见,一方把球打过去,就等着看对方怎么回应。

It's probably used a lot in tennis, where one player smacks the ball over to the other player and just waits to see what happens next.

Speaker 0

我干嘛还解释这个呢?

Why am I even explaining that?

Speaker 0

你肯定知道网球是怎么回事。

I mean, you definitely know what tennis is.

Speaker 0

不过在日常对话中,'the ball is in your court' 就是说责任现在落到你身上了。

Anyways, in everyday language, the ball is in your court is a way of saying that the responsibility is now yours.

Speaker 0

相当于在说:我这边已经做了,接下来该你了。

It's like saying I've made my move, now it's your turn.

Speaker 0

比如,你正打算给最好的朋友办个惊喜生日派对。

For example, imagine you're planning a surprise birthday party for your best friend.

Speaker 0

生日快乐。

Happy birthday.

Speaker 0

朋友的联系方式、装饰品、场地,你全都安排好了。

You've invited all of their friends, bought the decorations, and booked the venue.

Speaker 0

现在你需要朋友确认他们能不能来。

And now you need your friend to confirm their attendance.

Speaker 0

你可以说:嘿,现在轮到你做决定了。

You could say, hey, the ball is in your court now.

Speaker 0

赶紧告诉我你来不来,咱们好最后定下来。

Let me know if you're coming so we can finalize everything.

Speaker 0

再给你举几个例子。

Here are some more examples.

Speaker 0

我已经把所有信息都给了你,现在该你做决定了。

I've given you all the facts, and now the ball is in your court to decide.

Speaker 0

再来看一个。

And here's another one.

Speaker 0

我这边该做的都已经做了,接下来就看你的了。

I have done my part of the job, and now the ball is in your court to finish it.

Speaker 0

我觉得这下应该很清楚了。

That's clear, I think.

Speaker 0

如果你想让对方采取下一步行动,这句话能帮你加快进程。

If you want someone to make the next move, this phrase will accelerate the whole process.

Speaker 0

所以它特别实用。

That's why it's extremely useful.

Speaker 0

接下来是轻松一下的笑话时间。

Now the joke time.

Speaker 0

为什么数学书看起来那么难过?

Why did the math book look so sad?

Speaker 0

因为它知道球在自己这边,可又不擅长运动。

Just because it knew the ball was in its court and it wasn't good at sports.

Speaker 0

以上就是今天《每日一词》的全部内容。

And that is all for today's episode of A Phrase a Day.
