ABC,听好了。
ABC, listen.
你好。
Hello there.
My name's Emily, and you're listening to Newstime.
Hey, Emily.
你好。
Hello.
And hello to Newstime listener legend, Luca.
My name's Luca, and I'm from Toowoomba, from the lands of the Jarawa Gible people and the Western Waka Waka nations.
Emily, I love listening to news time, and I can't wait to hear it next Friday.
Glad you're enjoying news time, Luca.
I think you'll love the stories we've lined up for today's countdown.
We'll hear about an entire town that's up for sale at a bargain price.
Then we'll go poolside to discover what's lifting the spirits of stressed swimmers.
Then in our wow of the week, we'll meet a native animal whose poo is worth millions of dollars.
Let's get going.
There's no time to waste.
Story number five.
You might have heard your grown ups talking recently about petrol.
Prices going up.
It's really, really expensive, but I don't know why.
I've heard that the prices of it are going up because there's a war in The Middle East.
Most cars run on fuel, and conflicts overseas are affecting how much fuel is being shared all around the world.
This is a problem for Australia because most of our fuel comes from overseas.
That's meant petrol prices have risen quite a bit over the last couple of months.
In fact, the cost has almost doubled.
So right now, a lot of people are figuring out other ways to get around rather than driving.
What do you think?
Catching public transport.
Buses, planes, submarines.
Walking or riding their bike to get to work.
More and more Aussies are pulling old bikes out of their garages.
They've been giving them a dust off and even taking them into bike shops to be checked.
I think they are fixing some bikes.
是的。
Yep.
Bike repairers across Australia say they're wheelie, I mean, really busy as people swap driving four wheels for riding too.
It's fun.
It helps you with exercise and stuff like that.
Even if you're still on training wheels, cycling is a great way to get around.
But, of course, you've got to strap on a helmet before you get going.
We can stop climate change because bikes, they're powered by us and not petrol, and petrol harms the earth.
So that you can practice something and you don't just take up all your time watching a screen and go, oh, head on screen.
I might go ride a bike, so bye bye.
Cleaner air, better fitness, and time outdoors.
That sounds pretty good.
Maybe I should get my bike out of the garage too.
And a big shout out to all those bike repairers going the extra mile.
I hope you don't get too tired.
Get it?
Too tired?
Story number four.
Imagine for a moment that you were in charge of a whole town.
What sorts of things would you do?
I would say that every Friday, we plant a tree.
I would put a hostel ball in there.
I'd try to make it a better place and ask people what they want in the town.
Well, my friends, your dreams might be about to come true.
In the state of Queensland, there's a whole town for sale, and it's going cheap.
This town costs much less than the price of a city apartment.
I am shocked.
It might be very small.
The town of Cooladdi is tiny.
It's the smallest town in Australia with its own postcode.
Only two people live there, and they're the ones selling up.
These two people must be lonely.
Lonely.
Cooladdi isn't just small, but it's also very remote.
It's in Outback Queensland, about a nine hour drive from Brisbane.
And even though only a couple of people live there, lots of people drive through.
It looks like a very cozy place and nice and friendly.
From all reports, it is.
But be warned, with owning a town comes great responsibility.
You'll have to deliver the mail, run the pub, look after the town's motel, serve food at the restaurant, and run the town shop.
So who's still up for buying Cooladdi?
不行。
No.
Because it's too much to do in one day.
No way because there would be so many complaints.
Like, this isn't working.
I could do one at a time.
Cooladdi once had a population of 270 people.
So you never know.
With a bit of advertising magic from the town's new owner, numbers could grow.
Come and join Cooladdi.
We need more people.
Well, a place called Cooladdi sure does need some cool people
just like you.
Nailed it.
Story number three.
The seasons are changing, and that means the school swimming carnivals are done and dusted for another year.
I had to swim, but I could choose which strokes I wanted to do.
I just did backstroke.
I felt really, really, really, really nervous when I did that.
I felt really excited and nervous, but I still won a ribbon.
Nice one.
It's totally normal to feel nervous before a swimming race.
Even professional athletes feel stressed before they dive in.
That's why recently during the national swimming championships on the Gold Coast, Swimming Australia brought something poolside to distract the athletes from their worries.
Like a chilling out room or, like, a therapist that can help you calm down.
A band that most people liked, and they played the songs that everyone loves.
It could be a big fluffy dog.
没错。
You got it.
Three retrievers named Clover, Elton, and Ellie were wandering around the pool with their tails wagging.
They had an important job, to be support dogs for the athletes.
Bark loudly to cheer.
They would be great swimmers so they can teach other people.
They weren't there to provide that kind of support.
Their job was to stay out of the water and be a friendly presence to competitors.
And, of course, they welcomed pats and cuddles.
Here's a kitty.
Weeny weeny.
Before they get in, they can pat the dogs, and that will help them feel more calm.
They could know how to help.
Science tells us patting dogs can raise the level of hormones called oxytocin in our brains, and that reduces stress.
People are wondering if the next Olympics in two years' time might feature four legged friends.
Where else would you like to see support dogs?
At a school and at nursing homes.
They could be at a supermarket.
At the doctor's before you get a needle.
What a good point.
Story number two.
Recently, in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, researchers and traditional owners got together to examine some rock paintings that are thought to be about a thousand years old.
These paintings have never been documented before but feature a distinct Australian animal.
Wait.
Which bit is the animal?
I think it might be a shark.
Mega fauna?
The rock paintings are of the Thylacine, which might be better known as the Tasmanian Tiger.
You've probably heard of it.
They are orange, and they have black stripes like tigers, and they look like wolves.
They're extinct.
Sadly, that's true.
The last thylacine died ninety years ago at Hobart Zoo, meaning the species is extinct.
But this creature was clearly important to traditional owners, and this rock art found at the top of Australia reveals more information about it.
I think that tells us that Tasmanian tigers used to not just live in Tasmania, but also other parts of Australia.
You shouldn't call them Tasmanian Tiger because they actually lived all across Australia.
没错。
That's right.
They did.
And while it's been thought the thylacine died out on Mainland Australia three thousand years ago, this rock art has been dated at 1,000 years old.
So maybe the thylacine was around the mainland much longer than we realized.
It tells us that some people actually like Thylacines.
是的。
Yeah.
In Arnhem Land rock art, the Thylacine often appears alongside the rainbow serpent, who you might know as an important figure in Aboriginal dreamtime stories.
There's still plenty to be learned from traditional paintings like these ones.
Because it's ancient and, like, it's really fragile, and it helps us get more knowledge of the animals.
Alright, friends.
It's time for our
Wow of the Wee.
The Wee.
The Wee.
The Wee.
Wee.
The The Wee.
Story made me go wow because so much money for some poop.
Every night in the skies above Australia, there's some noisy screeching wings flapping and, poop dropping.
It's all the work of bats.
They are nocturnal, and they are my favorite animal.
They use echolocation.
It's where I think they let out a call and they can't really see and they use it to, like, travel around.
For example, if there was a tree in front of it, the sound would bounce back to the bat, and then it would know to get out of the way of the tree.
When they hang upside down, they might, like, cover themselves with their wings to sleep or something like that.
Sounds to me that you're all batty about bats.
Well, here's a fact that you might not know, and it's about their poo.
It could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
什么?
What?
It's like poo gold.
Now before you try to track some down and cash it in the bank, let me explain.
Research has shown that the bat known as the gray headed flying fox does valuable work, contributing about 90,000,000 new trees every year, which is enough for forest regeneration.
How can bat poo turn into magnificent trees?
I think it's because it helps spread plants around.
Bullseye.
The bats hang out in trees and chow down on fruit, swallowing the seeds as they go.
Then the seeds go, ahem, through them and are pooped out while they zoom their way around the sky.
The seeds grow into trees and then, voila, forest.
It's kinda weird that if a bat eats fruit, then all the seeds just go through its butt with poop.
I think that that's really, really good for the environment.
It means that bats help the ecosystem.
That's not all the bats can do to help the environment.
Microbats love to eat moths, and that stops moths eating crops like cotton.
And that saves farmers from millions of dollars of ruined crops.
I never knew that bats were so special.
I think that we should be looking after them a lot.
Bats of Australia, we thank you.
I mean, thank you for your messy work.
Well, hasn't this countdown flown?
I hope you've been listening very carefully because it's time for today's quiz.
Question one.
More people have been traveling around on what mode of transport?
Bicycles.
Question two, how many people live in the town of Cooladdi?
Two, but there's room for more.
Question three, what did Swimming Australia introduce to help athletes calm down before racing?
Support dogs.
Question four.
What's the name of the creature more commonly known as the Tasmanian Tiger?
The Thylacine.
Question five.
How do bats plant trees?
They poop out seeds.

Now I'm gonna go set up a bat house in my backyard.
I could do with some more trees around.
