Speaker 0

Hello, Michelle.

Speaker 0

How's it going today?

Speaker 1

I'm good, Lindsey.

Speaker 1

Lindsey, who is someone in your life who you consider to be a hero?

Speaker 0

Oh, The concept of a hero.

Speaker 0

I mean, my parents were both heroes in some ways, I guess, you could say that.

Speaker 0

Like, you know, in my life, right?

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

They raised me well, they taught me the right things.

Speaker 0

And so on a small, small scale, I would say they are.

Speaker 0

What about you, Michelle, in your life?

Speaker 1

It's funny.

Speaker 1

I mean, I was thinking of my parents too.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

It's like, it's funny because you don't often think I mean, you think of superhero, maybe not parents, but that's true.

Speaker 1

It is that that smaller concept of a hero, like personal to you.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

And then there's, you know, the larger concepts.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 1

I mean, of course, I think, like, health care workers, firefighters, all of those people in those kinds of professions, scientists, you know, are are heroes.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

所以。

So

Speaker 0

Especially during the pandemic, do you remember when we had the nurse like, can't remember what it was, but, like, at 8PM, we used to Yeah.

Speaker 0

Everyone used to was it pots and pans would make some noise for nurses coming off their shifts?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That is really a good example of heroes during during COVID willing to go to work and risk their lives.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

We're gonna have a we're gonna

Speaker 1

have an example of that later on because definitely I was thinking of that too.

Speaker 1

But what about unsung heroes?

Speaker 1

And yeah, how was that the same or different?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Well, in American culture, we love the concept of a hero.

Speaker 0

It's in all our movies, our narratives, but there's the also, the unsung hero is usually something something or someone who is not as recognized, but is kind of under the surface, but is making a big difference.

Speaker 0

Is really Yes.

Speaker 0

You know, creating the success of the thing or the person.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

So they don't necessarily get the credit.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

They're not necessarily noticed or praised as much for what they do as as are the, you know, people really more in the spotlight.

Speaker 1

But they may do things that are very appreciated or expected, but they just don't get that praise.

Speaker 1

So the word unsung here would mean, in a way, no one's singing about them.

Speaker 1

Like, we talk about singing your praises, right, is another expression.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

No one's singing.

Speaker 1

No one's praising.

Speaker 1

Maybe they don't get recognized, but they are essential.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Maybe this is someone who works behind the scenes of a a Hollywood movie or something, and they're not the famous Hollywood name and face, but they're making everything work.

Speaker 0

The assistant to the producer or something.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Something like that.

Speaker 0

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

I mean, do you think that if someone's called an unsung hero, do you think it's insulting?

Speaker 1

或者

Or

Speaker 0

不会。

No.

Speaker 0

I don't think it's insulting.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I don't think so.

Speaker 0

I think it's recognizing them or the thing that doesn't get recognized.

Speaker 0

So I think it's it's not an insult.

Speaker 0

What do you think, Michelle?

Speaker 1

No.

Speaker 1

I don't think so either.

Speaker 1

But we it is important, you know, to to always thank people who make a difference in our lives.

Speaker 1

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

And, yeah, guys, we also wanna let you know that if you haven't hit follow yet wherever you're listening to the All Ears English podcast

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

We wanna make sure that you do that so you never miss anything from us.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

So, yeah, go ahead and hit that button.

Speaker 1

Follow or subscribe on YouTube.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

But so, Lindsey, we were just talking about this before we got on the mic.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

It can also be a thing or a concept.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Lindsay, you used this recently.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

We were talking about consistency here in our podcast.

Speaker 1

That consistency is the unsung hero.

Speaker 1

So consistency is on a person, but it doesn't have to be.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

So when you talk about podcasting success, the reason our show has become so successful is the unsexy concept of consistency.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Sometimes the the unsung hero is also a little unsexy if it's a concept.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Because you might think about it.

Speaker 0

It's not flashy.

Speaker 0

It's not our colors.

Speaker 0

It's not our cover art or photography.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

It's not our music.

Speaker 0

It's the fact that we never miss an episode when we say we're going to publish.

Speaker 0

And that is actually more rare than you would think.

Speaker 0

Podcasting for most people is not a full time job.

Speaker 0

It's more of a hobby for many people still, and they don't meet those benchmarks of that consistency.

Speaker 0

So it has been a major, way for to propel us to success.

Speaker 0

So that's why I've I said consistency is the unsung hero of podcasting success.

Speaker 0

So here we're not talking about a human being.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

We're talking about a habit, I guess.

Speaker 1

是的。

Right.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

Exactly.

Speaker 1

So let's do some sample sentences.

Speaker 1

好的。

So Okay.

Speaker 1

This is I don't know if you realize this, but you are really the unsung hero of our group of friends.

Speaker 1

When someone is about to have an argument, you it and you always make sure we have regular get togethers.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So, Yeah.

Speaker 1

Someone who is maybe a peacemaker or someone who, you know, we say the, like, we might call somebody, well, we're actually, I'm gonna save this because there's another word that I'm gonna teach later that I think is good for this.

Speaker 1

But, yeah.

Speaker 1

So that would be an unsung hero.

Speaker 1

Lindsey, what's another one?

Speaker 0

The cast was amazing, but the unsung heroes were definitely the crew.

Speaker 0

Did you see them moving the huge set pieces?

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

This is an example I thought of earlier.

Speaker 0

Someone working behind the scene of a of the scenes of a Broadway show or a movie.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 1

You see them coming out in black or yeah.

Speaker 0

Working incredibly hard.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

Or I liked my professors this year, but the unsung heroes were actually the assistants.

Speaker 1

They really helped me out when I was having trouble understanding some of the more complex topics.

Speaker 0

Because sometimes when you go to a large university, you don't necessarily have access to the main professor.

Speaker 0

They're doing a lot of research.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Was that the case for you, Michelle, at University of Maryland?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I think so.

Speaker 1

It was yeah.

Speaker 1

Well, it like, my theater professors, I knew them well.

Speaker 1

That was smaller.

Speaker 1

But for the larger classes, the core classes, things like that, certainly, you don't really get to know the professor.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

So what about you?

Speaker 1

Because you went to a smaller school.

Speaker 0

We went to a smaller school.

Speaker 0

And so I kind of knew my professors a little better.

Speaker 0

They still did research, but it wasn't like a huge research university.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So I think at the big state universities, there's a lot of pressure on professors to publish new research.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

And so they'll put their teaching assistant in charge of really interactions with students and that kind of thing.

Speaker 1

So grading, all these things.

Speaker 0

Explaining things to tutor, maybe extra sessions or whatever it is.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So sometimes those TAs, we call them TAs.

Speaker 0

Maybe some of our listeners are TAs at a university.

Speaker 0

We call them unsung heroes sometimes.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

So, and then this goes back to our conversation from earlier.

Speaker 1

So here's one more.

Speaker 1

During COVID, the Instacart shoppers were the unsung heroes.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So no one was banging pots and pans for them.

Speaker 1

You know what I mean?

Speaker 1

But they were really also putting themselves in harm's way.

Speaker 1

You know, people who were doing shopping for others.

Speaker 1

So, yeah, you could call them the unsung heroes as well.

Speaker 0

Or really anyone that just was in a what was the term that was used?

Speaker 0

Just a necessary job or a I can't remember the term that they called it.

Speaker 0

But anyways, a job that just a supermarket cashier.

Speaker 0

The supermarket can't really shut down.

Speaker 0

Have to eat.

Speaker 0

So they were required to go to work.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

But that's scary, especially in a supermarket because you're exposing yourself face to face to people all day every day.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Absolutely.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

Okay, Michelle.

Speaker 0

So what are some situations when we might talk about the unsung hero?

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Well, just sharing appreciation for someone or explaining their value.

Speaker 1

Or what else, Lindsay?

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So let's see.

Speaker 0

When you're talking about people as a part of a group, for example, there's always the there's the quarterback, right, the star, the person Yeah.

Speaker 0

In the spotlight, and then there's I don't know what the equivalent would be in football, what the positions are, or maybe it's a type of player or an on the field personality that maybe doesn't get quite as much attention, but they're making the game happen.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

Or in theater, like we said about, you know, the people backstage, the crew, the school, parents even.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Might be on Punk Heroes.

Speaker 0

Maybe mothers sometimes, you know?

Speaker 0

I feel like sometimes, like, the moms are the ones often, you know, doing a lot of the work.

Speaker 0

It's not always true, but a lot of like the the tough nitty gritty work day to day and maybe getting little less credit at times.

Speaker 0

It's not always true.

Speaker 0

Like, things change and gender is flexible, but there's a little

Speaker 1

bit that.

Speaker 1

There's always that thing where they say, you know, a a dad out with his kids, You know?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Everybody, oh, he's such a good dad.

Speaker 1

But nobody thinks that when it's a mom.

Speaker 1

It's like No.

Speaker 1

Because it's it's expected.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

With the dad, oh, look.

Speaker 1

He's such a good dad.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And and everyone thinks it's so cute to see a dad holding his baby.

Speaker 0

And I've been the victim of that too.

Speaker 0

Like, just thinking that as I see a dad out with a kid versus a mom, it's totally normal versus a dad.

Speaker 0

Oh my god.

Speaker 0

That's so nice.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So there is there's a little something there in moms being unsung heroes kind of.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Absolutely.

Speaker 1

So and even people in the office.

Speaker 1

I mean, the people, you know, deliver or like the people delivering mail, the people, you know, just keeping things together that we don't give them credit for.

Speaker 1

You know, I wonder if sometimes an unsung hero can feel underappreciated.

Speaker 1

So it could be good to, you know, you know, just like draw attention to them and sometimes give these people that credit and turn them from an unsung hero to a sung hero.

Speaker 1

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

To a regular hero.

Speaker 0

Most of your mail delivery person.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

The people that pick up trash.

Speaker 0

I mean, there's so many people in your day to day day to day life that just keep life moving that we don't really think about as much, but just saying thank you.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

I mean, absolutely.

Speaker 0

是的

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

What would be another quote, Michelle?

Speaker 1

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Well, another example could be, you were the unsung hero of that game.

Speaker 1

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Thomas made the points, but they were all coordinated plays through you.

Speaker 0

是的

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

是的

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错

Exactly.

Speaker 0

So sometimes the the person who, like, strategizes the plays is not necessarily the one that delivers it and gets to be seen as the person, you know, pulling off the the the score or the goal.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错

Right.

Speaker 1

Like in basketball, they, you know, they always count who's doing the assist.

Speaker 1

明白了

Okay.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

So they call it the assist and then, you know, who so that that's the person who did the pass.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And I like that in basketball.

Speaker 1

They're you know, they do kind of value that as well.

Speaker 0

明白。

Okay.

Speaker 1

没错。

True.

Speaker 1

So but what about in American society?

Speaker 1

I mean, do you think because we talk about like, oh, you know, we we love a hero.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 0

We love a hero.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So do you think that we value the unsung heroes?

Speaker 0

I think we know they matter, but I think I think American culture can be very surface level, a very superficial at times.

Speaker 0

Very fast paced, very market driven, money driven.

Speaker 0

And so I really think that most of our attention goes towards the hero, not the unsung hero.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

Like, the celebrities get the attention.

Speaker 1

You know, it's it's always it's always amazing, you know, of, like, how much attention the celebrities get over the people who are saving lives Yeah.

Speaker 1

And and things like that.

Speaker 1

But let's talk about some other ways that we can describe this type of a person.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So the first one is the backbone.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That's a good one.

Speaker 0

You have a backbone.

Speaker 0

I mean, if you didn't have a backbone, you wouldn't be able to sit straight up, right?

Speaker 0

It's absolutely essential in our bodies through our body structure.

Speaker 0

And so it can also mean a bit of an unsung hero.

Speaker 0

Consistency is the backbone of all our English.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Love that.

Speaker 1

And this is the one that we were I was thinking about earlier.

Speaker 1

So the glue, right?

Speaker 1

If you you know, the glue is just it holds it together.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Everything everything would fall apart without the glue, but you're not thinking about the glue.

Speaker 1

You're looking at the big, oh, look at this in an in an art project.

Speaker 1

Look at the beautiful colors.

Speaker 1

Look at this.

Speaker 1

But you're not thinking about how that if that glue weren't there, what would happen?

Speaker 1

So you might hear something like she is the glue that holds our group together.

Speaker 0

Perfect.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

And then the person behind the scenes, this makes me think of the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which I love that one, Michelle.

Speaker 1

You love it too?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Because, yeah, it makes me think of remember that quote where they say the man is the head, but the woman is the neck.

Speaker 1

Remember that?

Speaker 0

There's so many great quotes from that movie.

Speaker 1

Oh, well, it's yeah.

Speaker 1

It's I just watched it recently again, and it's still it is still hilarious.

Speaker 1

Even the parts where you know they're coming, That so

Speaker 0

that movie just came up in our conversation in an open conversation club.

Speaker 1

It was

Speaker 0

a free conversation club for students in our courses.

Speaker 0

Last week, it came up.

Speaker 0

Someone had an example of a quote.

Speaker 0

So people are still quoting that movie.

Speaker 0

Guys, you haven't seen it yet, please go watch agree with it.

Speaker 1

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

So but, yeah, you might hear like, I wanna take a minute to recognize the person behind the scenes.

Speaker 1

She does everything for us.

Speaker 1

Copper

Missus Copper, please come out.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That's really nice.

Speaker 0

And sometimes if there's some kind of award ceremony or moment to recognize the staff, you could you could draw attention to an unsung hero in that way.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

And then the real MVP, right, you could say something like, I know you don't get credit, but I think you're the real MVP.

Speaker 0

You are always there for us, and everyone can come to you for help.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And what does MVP stand for?

Speaker 0

Most valuable player.

Speaker 0

Most valuable player.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Usually, that's in sports.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And then I know in sports in my college sports, we had, like, a I played division three tennis, and we had a, like, a a luncheon for the whole sports sport all athletes at the school.

Speaker 0

And there was an unsung there was I think there were, like, most valuable players, and then there were unsung heroes on each team.

Speaker 0

Or maybe just within the whole collegiate athletics department.

Speaker 0

So Yeah.

Speaker 0

Sometimes you see this being given out as a literally as an award sometimes.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

当然。

Yep.

Speaker 1

Exactly.

Speaker 1

So, guys, there are so many more, but we and we can do a follow-up someday, but these are some of the really good main ones.

Speaker 1

So let's do a role play.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

And here we just held a surprise party for our friend and we are reflecting on it.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Let's do it, Michelle.

Speaker 0

Here we go.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

I think it went well.

Speaker 1

Don't you?

Speaker 0

Absolutely.

Speaker 0

She was so surprised.

Speaker 0

I don't feel like you got credit for this, but thank you for being the backbone of this party.

Speaker 0

You did so much planning.

Speaker 1

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

Thank you.

Speaker 1

But I think you're the real MVP.

Speaker 1

You came up with a secret plan.

Speaker 0

Thank you.

Speaker 0

Thank you.

Speaker 0

I'm so glad we could celebrate Jasmine.

Speaker 0

She's always been the glue that holds our group together.

Speaker 0

She really deserved it.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

She's kind of our unsung hero.

Speaker 1

I don't think people realize how much she does for all her friends.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

She's always the person behind the scenes when someone needs help.

Speaker 1

没错。

Definitely.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And I think the people that are the unsung heroes, usually they don't necessarily need or want that huge recognition.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Usually that person just wants to wants to be the glue, wants to make things work and contribute.

Speaker 0

But it is really nice to kind of call it out sometimes because we are human.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Absolutely.

Speaker 1

People it is nice, you know, to to still say something to Yeah.

Speaker 1

Someone even even if you don't think that they need it.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

I I don't think it could ever hurt.

Speaker 1

没错。

Totally.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

100%.

Speaker 0

This has been a good episode.

Speaker 0

I wonder I bet our listeners, for some of them, this might be a new term because you don't hear it every day, right, on the street in English.

Speaker 0

But it's good to know when someone says, the unsung hero, what are we even talking about?

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So guys, go check out 260-7101.

Speaker 0

Love that.

Speaker 0

Michelle,

Speaker 1

Did we go, wait, did we go

Speaker 0

We didn't through go over it.

Speaker 0

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

I'm getting ahead of myself is what we would say in that I'm getting ahead of myself.

Speaker 1

That's all right.

Speaker 1

So you said, thank you for being the back bone of this party.

Speaker 1

Did so much planning.

Speaker 1

I really held it together.

Speaker 1

I held it up without me.

Speaker 1

Without the backbone, there was no party.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

Exactly.

Speaker 0

And then you said, oh, thank you.

Speaker 0

I think you're the real MVP.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

The real most valuable player.

Speaker 1

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

And, of course, we're not talking about sports here.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So MVP can go way beyond just sporting awards.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 0

是的

Yep.

Speaker 0

Important to know.

Speaker 0

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

What else?

Speaker 1

And then we're talking about our friend, and you said she has always been the glue that holds our group together.

Speaker 0

没错

Yes.

Speaker 0

And then you said she's kind of our unsung hero.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

And then you said, yeah.

Speaker 1

She's always the person behind the scenes when someone needs help.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

真美。

Beautiful.

Speaker 0

So Michelle, what's the final takeaway about unsung heroes?

Speaker 0

Any final thoughts here?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Well, think about it.

Speaker 1

In your life, who's an unsung hero?

Speaker 1

Is that someone you can think of now who maybe maybe you wanna think of that person now and tell them how thankful you are for them.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

That can certainly help you connect to someone.

Speaker 1

Of course, you know, letting them know how much you appreciate them.

Speaker 1

And then also it's just an interesting concept.

Speaker 1

And remember that it doesn't have to just be a person.

Speaker 1

It could be a concept.

Speaker 1

It could be a habit.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So think of the different ways that you could use this in your life.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And also think about your culture.

Speaker 0

As we've said, American culture is like a hero culture.

Speaker 0

We also use heroes in politics for you know, sometimes to create narratives, right, for better or for worse.

Speaker 0

He this hero you know, heroic idea is really used in movies, you know, performances, politics, all over American culture.

Speaker 0

So ask yourself, does your culture bring in heroes in any way into the narrative that it's telling itself about itself or about other places in the world.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

It's just super interesting to think about that.

Speaker 0

没错。

So Yeah.

Speaker 1

Good stuff.

Speaker 1

当然。

Definitely.

Speaker 1

Alright, Lindsey.

Speaker 1

Well, thanks so much for chatting about this with me today, and we'll talk to you guys later.
