Hey, Lindsay.

Speaker 1

How are you?

Speaker 0

Hey.

Speaker 0

Doing great today, Michelle.

Speaker 0

How are you?

Speaker 0

The sun's shining here in Denver.

Speaker 0

How's the weather where you are?

Speaker 1

I mean, we had a huge snowstorm.

Speaker 1

It's cold out.

Speaker 0

Digging out?

Speaker 0

Are you digging out from that storm?

Speaker 1

We're out.

Speaker 1

It wasn't as bad as I think it could have been, but yeah.

Speaker 1

And I'm not impressed with the weather.

Speaker 1

But yeah.

Speaker 1

Yesterday, I actually went out in the snow with my kids and yeah.

Speaker 1

Like or Lindsey, I mean, we've talked about this sometimes before.

Speaker 1

Like, if we're big risk takers.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Are you a risk taker?

Speaker 1

Like, when you're, like, in the snow?

Speaker 1

Do you?

Speaker 0

I'm careful.

Speaker 0

I'm pretty careful.

Speaker 0

I mean, I'm I take risks in business, I guess.

Speaker 0

But in, like, physical aspects of life I mean, I'm a skier, so that's risky.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

Exactly.

Speaker 0

If I go out, I'm not gonna do crazy stuff.

Speaker 0

Like, I'm not a 23 year old guy.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

But what kind of risks are we talking about in the snow?

Speaker 0

Like, jumping into a snow angel?

Speaker 1

Or No.

Speaker 1

That's not to like, you know, okay.

Speaker 1

If you see, like, an icy set of stairs.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

Or do you avoid them?

Speaker 1

Do you like, what do

Speaker 0

you do?

Speaker 0

I well, if I have to go up them, I would take them.

Speaker 0

I just go really slow and hold the railing probably.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, it's good to play it safe in the snow, you know, guys.

Speaker 1

Avoid the ice and things like that.

Speaker 1

对。

But Mhmm.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Play it safe, by the way.

Speaker 1

That is the expression that we are talking about today.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 1

What does that mean to play it safe?

Speaker 0

Well, it can mean a lot of things.

Speaker 0

That's why today's episode is gonna be interesting.

Speaker 0

It's not just about physically being safe.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Sometimes it's about leaving extra time Yeah.

Speaker 0

So that you're not late.

Speaker 0

Sometimes it's about double checking details so you don't make a big mistake.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Just means to

Speaker 0

do something do something while being careful.

Speaker 0

对吧

Right?

Speaker 0

To not be too risky.

Speaker 0

没错

Yes.

Speaker 0

You got cautious.

Speaker 1

Not too risky.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So for example, let's play it safe and leave a little early.

Speaker 1

Lindsey, do you tend to leave early?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I usually leave on the earlier side.

Speaker 0

Was I was I was watching something or some or maybe it was something I saw on social media.

Speaker 0

Someone was explaining, like, how they're they were saying they're a late person and how that happens.

Speaker 0

That they were saying that they once they'll have a moment when they're like, I should leave right now.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

I should leave this event starting.

Speaker 0

I should leave.

Speaker 0

But they feel the sense of greed for their time.

Speaker 0

And like, maybe they're reading a book and they want to finish that chapter.

Speaker 0

So they'll override the intuition and they'll say, oh, no, no, I just want to finish this chapter.

Speaker 0

I deserve this.

Speaker 0

Like, I I deserve my time.

Speaker 0

And so they end up leaving late and being late.

Speaker 0

And so because I've always wondered, like, late people, how does it happen?

Speaker 0

You know what I mean?

Speaker 0

Like, how does it actually happen?

Speaker 0

I have friends who are late people and it's it can be frustrating in American culture.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So Well, I think I've talked about, you know, my dad is very much, oh, an early person.

Speaker 1

Person.

Speaker 1

然后

And then

Speaker 0

I think Early person.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And my brother is the total opposite.

Speaker 1

He's a mean person.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Well, he he just he just he does not play it safe with the time.

Speaker 1

Like, even apparently they were visiting my my parents in Florida and my dad was gonna drive them to the airport to leave.

Speaker 1

And my dad said it was the time that they said they wanted to leave and like Yeah.

Speaker 1

My brother was like just gonna take a shower.

Speaker 0

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

A bad clash between your dad and your brother.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And so then also once when my brother like was he had like an internship, I think near where my dad worked.

Speaker 1

And so my dad would take him every day.

Speaker 1

Oh, And so that was yeah.

Speaker 1

And so this is when I was growing up.

Speaker 1

And then one time my dad was just about to leave and then my brother was like, I'm coming.

Speaker 1

I'm coming.

Speaker 1

And he like wasn't wearing a shirt, like running in the driveway, like with a shirt over his shoulder.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Some people just are that way.

Speaker 0

It's really But I always try to figure out like how what is the justification in their head?

Speaker 0

Because they must know when they should leave.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

What is happening in the brain?

Speaker 0

你

You

Speaker 1

know?

Speaker 1

Sometimes anyways it's not just about what time to leave.

Speaker 1

This could also be about planning.

Speaker 1

Know?

Speaker 1

Oh, when are you going to start planning a party?

Speaker 1

Like, I have to plan my daughter's birthday party and I'm really behind.

Speaker 1

So it's just interesting.

Speaker 1

What's another way to play it safe maybe?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It sounds like you and I are we both play it safe by leaving early maybe.

Speaker 0

But yeah.

Speaker 0

So don't know.

Speaker 0

Are you maybe you you

Speaker 1

I'm a I'm a middle.

Speaker 1

I'm not my dad.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

You're on time then in that case.

Speaker 1

I guess.

Speaker 1

I try.

Speaker 0

We could say I played it safe and went to a school near my parents' house.

Speaker 0

I wasn't ready to live away from home.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And that's another way of playing it safe.

Speaker 0

Like, safe with your heart, with your with your fear of of, I don't know, independence maybe.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

It might be too much too soon to just go across the country or something.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Or I tend to play it safe with my food choices.

Speaker 1

I grew up as a picky eater.

Speaker 1

Do you have any friends or family members who are really picky eaters?

Speaker 0

Not too much.

Speaker 0

Maybe my niece is, but she's been taught to be picky.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

I mean, that's so that's tricky.

Speaker 0

That's a whole other topic.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Really is.

Speaker 0

But yeah.

Speaker 0

I I think kids can be picky if if they're, I guess, if they're allowed to be.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's really hard.

Speaker 1

It's hard.

Speaker 1

I know.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 1

You go in with all these good intentions and it's really hard.

Speaker 1

But I remember a friend of mine in college, she was so picky.

Speaker 1

I mean, even because we think of kids as being picky, but it can follow you into adulthood.

Speaker 1

And I remember that she she really played it safe.

Speaker 1

Like, didn't like I mean, she would just like get like plain sandwiches, like no condiments and no lettuce, you know, things like that.

Speaker 0

Interesting.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Interesting.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And then the last example, I wish she wouldn't always play it so safe.

Speaker 0

I think she could really succeed if she got out of her comfort zone.

Speaker 0

So I think as human beings, we know that there's something good on the other side of risk.

Speaker 0

There's something good on the other side if we don't play it safe, but our then our our lizard brain tries to keep us safe in all these ways.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 1

Exactly.

Speaker 1

So guys, make sure you hit follow wherever you're listening to the All Ears English podcast so that you never miss anything.

Speaker 1

对的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

But, yeah, how do you are there parts of your life, Lindsay, where you I mean, yeah, where you talked about, like, physical versus in business.

Speaker 1

But is there anything else in your life where you feel like you play it safe or you don't play it safe?

Speaker 0

Jeez.

Speaker 0

That's a good question, Michelle.

Speaker 0

I'm not really sure how to answer it.

Speaker 0

But Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I mean well, maybe, you know, I've gotten a little like, when I was younger, maybe I was better at, you know, reaching out and, you know, asking like a potential friend, asking for their number.

Speaker 0

Hey, let's hang out sometime.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

A little more fast and loose with, you know, with that.

Speaker 0

Maybe I've gotten a bit more of a fear of rejection as I've gotten older.

Speaker 1

That's You You would think it'd be the other way around.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Maybe.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

What about you, Michelle?

Speaker 0

What do you think?

Speaker 1

你有

Have you

Speaker 0

过吗

gotten Have

Speaker 1

I think I'm less it's interesting.

Speaker 1

I think I'm less afraid of rejection as an adult, but it it really depends.

Speaker 1

Then when you do find yourself in an awkward social situation, it's can still you can still feel like a little kid again.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Like, or a It's like, oh my god.

Speaker 1

I'm I'm a grown woman, and there are still social situations where I'm like, do these people like me?

Speaker 1

Or I don't you know?

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

We all face that for sure.

Speaker 0

It's not just being a kid.

Speaker 0

It's it's being a human being.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

And wanting to be liked for

Speaker 1

sure.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So there are other things we might say.

Speaker 0

We might say be on the safe side.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Like, just to be on the safe side, you should make an appointment rather than go as a walk in.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That hap actually, I took my kids to the aquarium last week and I made a reservation only for my son because my daughter and I are members.

Speaker 1

I didn't realize.

Speaker 1

And they said, oh, did you make a reservation?

Speaker 1

Well, we're not busy today, but other days, just to be on the safe side, you should make sure you have a Yes.

Speaker 0

No, that's good.

Speaker 0

That's good context right there.

Speaker 0

And that makes sense because the risk is that you've wasted this time.

Speaker 0

Your kids get all excited about going somewhere, right?

Speaker 0

And then you show up and you can't go in, and maybe you have a temper tantrum on your hand or two.

Speaker 1

No.

Speaker 1

No.

Speaker 1

Not only that.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And then in business, we might take a more conservative approach.

Speaker 0

So to take a conservative approach, we should consider taking a conservative approach this time.

Speaker 0

So maybe in business, you've made some mistakes, and this time you've learned.

Speaker 0

Part of it is just getting smarter.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Making more calculated risks.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

Exactly.

Speaker 1

So and then there's just be cautious.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

We need to be cautious when making big purchases online.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

For sure.

Speaker 0

So there's so many what I like about this phrase and this idea is that there's so many places in life it applies to.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1

And you might play it safe in one area of your life and the other and in others, you're totally different.

Speaker 1

So Yeah, it's isn't

Speaker 0

that weird how like in certain aspects of life, we're really careful, and others were not at all.

Speaker 0

It's strange.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It definitely is.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I actually, I feel like I want to think about my own life more and think about where I play it safe and where I don't.

Speaker 1

Kind of an interesting exercise.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And that's what our listeners can do after they listen today.

Speaker 0

Think about your life and your risk tolerance.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

What is your has that gotten, like, bigger?

Speaker 0

Like, have you increased your risk tolerance or have you decreased it?

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

Have you become more cautious as you've gotten older?

Speaker 0

Interesting question.

Speaker 1

Very interesting.

Speaker 1

Alright.

Speaker 1

Let's do a role play.

Speaker 1

So here we are friends talking about going to dinner.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 1

So should we make a reservation?

Speaker 0

Probably.

Speaker 0

It's a popular place, so we should play it safe.

Speaker 1

好。

Okay.

Speaker 1

And just to be on the safe side, do you think six or 06:30 is better?

Speaker 0

I'd say 06:30.

Speaker 0

Better to take a conservative approach.

Speaker 1

好。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Let's yeah.

Speaker 1

Let's be cautious.

Speaker 1

So for some reason, doing the 06:30 feels safe for is more conservative.

Speaker 1

It could be maybe that we have a friend joining us.

Speaker 1

It could be traffic that we're anticipating.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错

Exactly.

Speaker 1

没错

Right.

Speaker 0

That context isn't here, but you can imagine it being there.

Speaker 0

Right, so, alright, let's go back through this.

Speaker 0

You said should we make a reservation?

Speaker 0

And I said probably, it's a popular place, so we should play it safe.

Speaker 1

And I said okay, and just to be on the safe side, do you think six or 06:30 is better?

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

And I said, I say I'd say 06:30.

Speaker 0

Better to take a conservative approach.

Speaker 1

And I said, oh, yes.

Speaker 1

Let's be cautious.

Speaker 0

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Speaker 0

right, good one.

Speaker 1

Yes, another good one.

Speaker 0

好的。

All right

Speaker 1

guys, takeaway for today is, yeah, we've talked about it a lot.

Speaker 1

This is just such an interesting kind of mental exercise, a getting to know yourself exercise about how you can play it safe in one aspect of your life and less so in another.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And guaranteed and the interesting part is guaranteed, each of us, each of our listeners are going to realize that there are some aspects you've probably increased your risk tolerance and some you may have decreased it.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And think about why.

Speaker 0

Like, what experiences have led to that?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Really interesting.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

当然。

Definitely.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

Well, I'm glad we talked about this today, Lindsey.

Speaker 1
