Speaker 0

嗨,林赛。

Hey, Lindsey.

Speaker 0

你最近怎么样?

How are you?

Speaker 1

嗨,米歇尔。

Hi, Michelle.

Speaker 1

我挺好的。

I'm doing pretty well.

Speaker 1

你呢?

How are you?

Speaker 1

你最近还好吗?

How's it going?

Speaker 0

是啊。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我挺好的。

I'm doing well.

Speaker 0

谢谢。

Thanks.

Speaker 0

Lindsey,最近你试过什么但后来放弃了的吗?

Lindsay, what is something you tried but gave up on recently?

Speaker 0

比如少吃甜食、学点新东西,或者养成什么好习惯之类的。

So could be something like sweets, learning something, a good habit.

Speaker 1

没有。

No.

Speaker 1

我没放弃吃甜食,Michelle。

I did not give up on sweets, Michelle.

Speaker 1

最近我冰箱里的冰淇淋比以往任何时候都多。

I have more ice cream than ever in my fridge these days.

Speaker 1

不过要说放弃的,应该是早起这件事。我之前坚持了一阵子,但最近几个月我打算多睡一会儿。

But I would say the giving the getting up early, I did I did I was doing it for a while, and I've tried to sleep a bit more in the last few months.

Speaker 1

所以我最近在稍微调整一下。

And so I've been like adjusting that a bit.

Speaker 1

早上散步的时间变短了。

So my walks are a little shorter in the morning.

Speaker 1

我干脆不再早起,多睡一会儿。

So I gave up on getting up super early to get more sleep.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

睡眠的重要性,我最近才真正意识到,简直太关键了。

Sleep is I'm just realizing how unbelievably important it is.

Speaker 1

确实如此。

It is.

Speaker 1

某种程度上,它比什么都重要。

It's almost more important than anything in a way.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

你呢,米歇尔?

What about you, Michelle?

Speaker 1

最近你有没有放弃什么?

Is there anything you've given up on lately?

Speaker 0

我一直在努力吃得更健康一些。

I've give I've tried to give up on, like I've been trying to eat more in a clean way.

Speaker 0

就算吃加工食品,我也尽量选成分更干净的。

I mean, even when I have processed food, it's with, like, cleaner ingredients.

Speaker 0

我真的在很认真地努力。

I'm I'm really, really trying.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我不再买那些配料表长得吓人的东西了。

Not to buy things with, like, you know, the whole long list of ingredients.

Speaker 0

我还不算完美。

I'm not perfect.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

但确实如此。

But Yes.

Speaker 0

我确实更留意这些事了。

I I, like, really pay attention to that stuff more.

Speaker 0

我不确定这会不会有帮助,但是……

Don't I know if it's gonna help, but

Speaker 1

我努力了。

I try.

Speaker 0

这总归是件好事。

So that's something.

Speaker 0

不过今天我们要聊一个表示停止或放弃的表达。

So but today we're gonna talk about an expression we use when we stop something or give up.

Speaker 0

对。

So Mhmm.

Speaker 0

我们可以说‘算了’。

What we can say is call it.

Speaker 0

这个表达是受另一期播客的启发。

And this was inspired by another podcast episode.

Speaker 0

我们在角色扮演中用到了这个说法。

We use this phrase in the role play.

Speaker 0

如果你想看看,那期节目是‘allearsenglish’。

So if you wanna check that out, that was allearsenglish.

Speaker 0

没戏,几种说‘没用’的有趣表达。

No dice, fun ways to say something didn't work.

Speaker 1

我喜欢这个说法。

I love that.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

没戏。

No dice.

Speaker 1

这真有意思。

That was fun.

Speaker 1

录这期节目特别开心。

That was a fun episode to record.

Speaker 1

所以各位,听完这期节目后,去听听那一期吧,我们今天的内容就是受那期启发的。

So guys, at the end of this episode, go and check that one out, but that is where the idea here came for today's episode.

Speaker 1

那我们能听一段那个角色扮演的片段吗,米歇尔?

So do we have a little excerpt from that role play then, Michelle?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

事情是这么发生的。

So this is this is how it it came up.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

好吧。

Alright.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

听起来今晚不太顺啊。

It sounds like tonight is not our night.

Speaker 0

是啊。

I know.

Speaker 0

我觉得咱们干脆别做了,下周再试吧。

I say we just call it and try again next week.

Speaker 1

同意。

Agreed.

Speaker 1

好的。

All right.

Speaker 1

就这么定了。

Call it.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

我说咱们就到此为止吧。

I say we just call it.

Speaker 1

今天我们就专注这个。

That is what we're focusing on today.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

我们已经宣布这事正式结束了。

It's like, we announced that it's officially over.

Speaker 0

算是吧。

Somewhat.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

一旦正式宣布,就再也没有回头路了。

Make the official announcement and there's no going back at that point.

Speaker 1

这其实就是下定决心的意思。

You've just you essentially it means to decide.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

下定决心,对。

To decide Right.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我是说,你现在可能会想到类似的情况,比如棒球比赛时突然下雨。

I mean, you might hear this with like I'm just thinking now when there's like rain at a baseball game.

Speaker 1

哦,是啊。

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

他们正在考虑,到底要不要继续下去?

And they're trying to decide, are they gonna keep it going?

Speaker 0

要不要等一等?

Are they gonna wait?

Speaker 0

有时候他们会等好几个小时。

Sometimes they wait hours.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

还是干脆直接取消,就说算了。

Or are they just gonna call it and say, okay.

Speaker 0

我们不打了。

We're no more game.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

网球也是这样。

Tennis was like that too.

Speaker 1

雨天不能在湿的球场上打。

You can't play on wet courts.

Speaker 1

总有个时候,大家等着他们宣布是否继续。

So there's always a certain moment when you were waiting for them to call it.

Speaker 1

你知道的,这场比赛到底还比不比?

You know, is this match canceled or what are we doing?

Speaker 1

今天我们就来聊聊这个。

So we're gonna get into this today.

Speaker 1

We've got so much good content for you coming out this summer.

Speaker 1

你真的不能错过。

You do not wanna miss it.

Speaker 1

明白吗?

Alright?

Speaker 0

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

所以,用这种表达来表示放弃或结束某件事,其实特别能拉近人与人之间的距离,因为它展现了真诚和自我觉察。

So, yeah, using this type of expression for giving up or just ending something is great for connection because it shows honesty and self awareness.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

放弃、停下来,其实特别容易引起共鸣。

Giving up, stopping something, it's really relatable.

Speaker 0

我们这个文化总是强调不能放弃。

I mean, we have this culture of never give up.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

确实如此。

We do.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

没错。

That's true.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

这确实很有文化代表性。

That is really cultural.

Speaker 1

我们总在说要坚持、要坚持,绝不能放弃。

This narrative we have of keep trying, keep trying, never give up.

Speaker 1

但有时候,确实该放手了,得做个决定,毕竟我们不可能把精力都撒在每件事上。

But sometimes, yeah, it's strategic to call it, to make a decision because we can't put our energy everywhere all the time.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

说真的,我们都曾满怀热情开始一件事,后来却明白,不管什么原因,这事儿根本行不通。

I mean, we've all started something with good intentions and then just realized this isn't gonna work for whatever reason.

Speaker 0

而且确实如此。

And Yeah.

Speaker 0

你说,你对放弃这件事怎么看?

You know, I I mean, what's your philosophy on giving up?

Speaker 1

这问题真不好答,因为……

This is a tough one because Yeah.

Speaker 1

我了解到我伴侣的父母有个规矩,孩子选了某项运动,就得坚持到底。

You know, I know that my partner my partner's parents, when a sport was chosen for the season, the the rule was that the kids had to continue it.

Speaker 1

就是不能中途退出。

Like, couldn't quit.

Speaker 1

比如打几场之后,也得把整个赛季打完。

After a few games, they had to finish the season, for example.

Speaker 1

然后再决定要不要继续。

To decide like if, you know, and then decide whether to quit after that.

Speaker 1

他们不允许孩子在赛季中间撂挑子,也不允许随便说‘我不干了’。

Like they weren't allowed to quit halfway through a season and they couldn't call it and just say this is not for me.

Speaker 1

必须坚持到结束,我其实挺认同这种做法的。

They had to see it I kind of respect that.

Speaker 1

你知道吗,我觉得只要坚持一段时间,就该把一件事做完。

You know, that idea that like if for a certain amount of time, you should see something through.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

因为一开始你可能特别讨厌它,但后来某天突然就变了,你才发现,哦,原来我从中学到了东西,或者我其实挺擅长这个项目的某个方面。

Because maybe in the beginning, you hate it and then something happens like later on and you're like, oh, actually, I learned this lesson or I'm actually pretty good at this aspect of the sport.

Speaker 1

就是这样。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

所以我个人更倾向于这种做法。

So I feel like I tend more in that direction.

Speaker 1

我想给它一个真正的机会。

I wanna give it a real chance.

Speaker 1

我不希望一遇到困难就放弃,除非我真的确定这不是我该做的,或者我只是太懒了,又或者我只是受不了学新东西时的麻烦。

Like, I don't wanna give in and quit on something until I really know if it's not for me or if I'm just being lazy or if I just don't like the inconvenience of learning something new.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

确实有点麻烦。

It's a little inconvenient.

Speaker 1

刚开始学的时候总会有点不自在。

It's a little uncomfortable to be a beginner at

Speaker 0

总得有个时候吧。

some point.

Speaker 0

是啊。

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

天哪。

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

真的特别不自在。

It's so uncomfortable.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

但这种‘我们不能放弃’的想法,确实深深根植于我们的文化中。

But it is definitely very embedded in our culture, this idea of, oh, we can't give up.

Speaker 0

你不能半途而废。

You don't quit.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

这其实另有一个话题,改天再聊吧。

You know, there's a that's a whole other conversation for another day.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

不过呢。

But yeah.

Speaker 0

我的意思是,咱们刚才说的,‘停止做某事’到底是什么意思。

I mean, so let's talk about so call it, as we've been saying, it means to decide to stop doing something.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

当我们实在受不了了,累得不想再试了,或者事情怎么都不顺的时候,就会用这个词。

So we use it when we've had enough, we're tired of trying, or just something isn't working.

Speaker 0

那我们来举个例子吧。

So here, let's do a little example.

Speaker 1

那你现在还去上高温瑜伽课吗?

So are you still going to hot yoga?

Speaker 0

说实话,上完第三节课我就放弃了。

Honestly, I had to call it after the third class.

Speaker 1

对啊。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

所以你就干脆觉得这事儿不适合你了。

So you just kinda decided that wasn't for you.

Speaker 1

是吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

这有点不一样。

That's a little bit different.

Speaker 1

上课和加入一个团队不一样,团队可是靠你的。

Classes are a little bit different than joining like a team where the team is relying on you.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

在我看来,上课就是单纯地消费一个课程。

Like, classes, you're just a consumer of a class in my mind.

Speaker 1

你懂的。

You know?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

所以我想,这种放弃或退出的想法,其实因情况而异,有时候你可能该再给它一次机会,对吧?

So I guess, yeah, this idea of calling things or giving up, it's it's really different depending on the situation and whether maybe you should give something more of a chance or Right.

Speaker 0

如果没那么严重的话。

If it's not that serious.

Speaker 0

那就算了。

It's like, okay.

Speaker 0

所以你不喜欢瑜伽课?

So you don't like the yoga class.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

也没多大关系。

Not not a big deal.

Speaker 1

下次试试普拉提课吧。

Try the pilates class next.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

你可以,这样也没问题。

You can that's fine.

Speaker 0

那,Lindsay,我们该怎么用呢?

So but, Lindsay, how do we use it?

Speaker 0

这种结构一般是怎样的?

What's kind of the structure?

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

一般来说,我们希望这样来搭建结构。

Generally, guys, what we wanna do is we wanna create a structure like this.

Speaker 1

得赶紧结束工作了。

Have to plus call it.

Speaker 1

比如说,现在都这么晚了。

So for example, it's so late.

Speaker 1

你还在学习吗?

Are you still studying?

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

我好几个小时前就该结束了。

I have to call it hours ago.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

And so yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

我不是说必须得打电话才算结束。

I don't mean I have to call it on the phone.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

咱们就确认一下,这个‘结束’就是这个意思。

Let's just make sure that's Yes.

Speaker 0

我是说,我得放下手机不打了。

I have to call the sitting on the phone.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

就是,你知道的,我得停下来了。

It just you know, I had to stop.

Speaker 0

或者我再举个例子。

Or here's another example.

Speaker 1

我们还接着拼宜家的家具吗?

Should we keep working on the IKEA furniture?

Speaker 0

我觉得我们得做个了断。

I think we have to call it.

Speaker 0

这事儿快把我们逼疯了。

It's driving us both crazy.

Speaker 1

天哪。

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

典型的难题。

Classic challenges.

Speaker 1

你有没有买过宜家的家具,结果怎么都组装不起来?

Have you ever ordered something from IKEA and just not been able to put it together?

Speaker 1

就像你刚才说的,根本搞不定。

Just like you just couldn't do it.

Speaker 0

我们还挺走运的。

We've been pretty lucky.

Speaker 0

说实话,我本来就不是擅长动手组装的人。

I mean, I I'm not the big putter together of things.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我的意思是,我会帮忙的。

I mean, but I'll help.

Speaker 0

不过呢,是的。

But yeah.

Speaker 0

那个,我一直把它放在那儿,挺有意思的。

The I I have had it it there there it's funny.

Speaker 0

每次到了这种时候,我就看着,不管是丹在弄,还是我在帮忙,你总是……

It's always this moment where I watch like, if Dan's doing something or if I'm helping and you

Speaker 1

你觉得你弄不了。

think I can't get it.

Speaker 1

我真的弄不了。

I can't get it.

Speaker 1

我真的弄不了。

I can't get it.

Speaker 1

这是什么?

What is this?

Speaker 1

这是什么?

What is this?

Speaker 0

然后突然间,你就变成了这样,

And then all of a sudden, you're just you're like,

Speaker 1

碎片,是的。

pieces Yeah.

Speaker 1

恍然大悟了。

Fit There's a realization.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我懂你的意思。

I know what you mean.

Speaker 1

我懂你的意思。

I know what you mean.

Speaker 1

确实如此。

It's true.

Speaker 1

这种感觉真不错。

That's a good feeling.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

是啊。

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

但我们非得用这个表达方式吗?

But is have to and call it the only construction we use?

Speaker 1

还有没有别的方法来表达这句话?

Are there other ways we could construct this phrase?

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

我们也可以这样处理。

We could also do this.

Speaker 0

我们也可以用‘going to’加上‘call it’来说。

We could say going to plus call it.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

所以就是‘going to call it’。

So going to call it.

Speaker 0

这通常用在谈论自己时。

So this is usually when talking about yourself.

Speaker 0

明白了。

Okay.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

比如,你一整天都在写东西。

So for example, you've been writing all day.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我确实写了一整天,但现在真的要停了。

I really have, but I'm gonna call it.

Speaker 1

我再也集中不了精神了。

I can't focus anymore.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

你注意到了吗,林赛说的是‘gonna call it’。

And notice Lindsay said gonna call call it.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

说到这个结构,我们理论上该说‘going to’,但其实大家都会直接说‘gonna’。

So when we talk about the structure, we're saying going to, but you guys know we're gonna say we're gonna say gonna.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我们不会真的说‘going to’。

We're not we're not gonna say going to.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

然后可以提个建议。

And then there's could give a suggestion.

Speaker 0

所以如果你这么做,可能会这么说。

So if you're doing that, you could might sound like this.

Speaker 0

咱们要不要结束?

Should we and then say, call it.

Speaker 0

我们要不要结束?

Should we call it?

Speaker 1

我们要不要结束?

Should we call it?

Speaker 1

这个食谱没按计划进行。

This recipe is not turning out as planned.

Speaker 1

我们算了吧。

Should we call it?

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

我们直接点外卖吧。

Let's just order takeout.

Speaker 1

再次强调,这里说‘算了吧’,意思就是决定不再继续这个食谱了。

Again, making the decision to not continue with the recipe, right, is what call it means here.

Speaker 1

最后的表达方式就是‘算了吧’。

And then the final construction is let's call it.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

我们一起决定这么做吧。

Let's decide to do this together.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

比如,米歇尔,你会怎么说?

So for example, Michelle, what would you say?

Speaker 0

我们要不要继续找?

Should we keep searching?

Speaker 1

不用了。

No.

Speaker 1

算了吧,我觉得我们找不到的。

Let's call it, I don't think we're gonna find it.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

所以这时候,你是在决定停止寻找。

So here you're calling off a search of some sort.

Speaker 1

你一直没找到它。

You haven't been able to find it.

Speaker 1

你没成功。

You haven't been successful.

Speaker 0

别管了。

Just forget it.

Speaker 0

也许我们直接买一个新的,或者干脆认栽算了。

Maybe we'll buy whatever it is, a new one or just cut our losses.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

就是这样。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

好了,Michelle。

Alright, Michelle.

Speaker 1

我们开始吧。

Here we go.

Speaker 1

其实还有其他说法意思差不多,比如‘收手’。

So there are other expressions that kind of mean the same thing, like call it quits.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我想‘call it’可能是‘call it quits’的简略说法。

I guess maybe call it is just a shortened version of call it quits.

Speaker 0

你觉得是这样吗?

Do you think?

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

其实我也这么想。

Actually, I think so.

Speaker 0

大概吧。

Probably.

Speaker 0

大概吧。

Probably.

Speaker 0

它的用法非常相似。

It's used in a very similar way.

Speaker 0

这么说吧,我来举个例子。

I mean, so here's how you would use it.

Speaker 0

你周末还去徒步吗?

Do you still go hiking on the weekends?

Speaker 1

不去了。

No.

Speaker 1

我不得不放弃了。

I had to call it quits.

Speaker 1

我膝盖受伤了。

I injured my knee.

Speaker 1

它也可能是指‘call it off’的缩略形式。

The other thing it might be short for is call it off.

Speaker 1

不过‘call it off’和‘call it quits’的意思是不一样的。

But call it off and call it quits mean two different things.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对吧

Right?

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错

Exactly.

Speaker 0

call it off 是指真的取消

Call it off means, like, to actually cancel

Speaker 1

取消某件事

Cancel something.

Speaker 0

比如说,我想的是婚礼

Like, I'm thinking of, like, a a wedding.

Speaker 0

我们不得不取消了婚礼

Call We had to call off the wedding.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

这指的是

It's a

Speaker 1

某个特定时间发生的特定事件。

specific event at a specific time.

Speaker 1

它到底会不会发生?

Is it gonna happen or not?

Speaker 1

而‘call it quits’的意思是放弃任何事,比如任何爱好或者你常做的事。

Whereas call it quits means you quit anything, any hobby, anything that you tend to do.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

我是不会说‘我要放弃学法语’这样的话的。

Like, I don't think I would say, like, I'm gonna call off learning French.

Speaker 0

不会。

No.

Speaker 1

我要放弃

I'm gonna call

Speaker 0

这个念头。

it off.

Speaker 0

根本不可能。

It's like no.

Speaker 0

绝对不行。

No.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

完全没错。

Completely.

Speaker 0

那咱们就今天到此为止吧。

Then there's then there's let's call it a day.

Speaker 0

所以这句话通常就是表示今天先到这里。

So this is usually just end something just for the day.

Speaker 0

说到底,意思就是这件事今天告一段落了。

At the end at the end of the day, we're saying this is done.

Speaker 0

比如,我们该留到多晚呢?

So for example, how late should we stay?

Speaker 1

其实,今天就到这里吧。

Actually, let's call it a day.

Speaker 1

你们今天干得特别棒。

You guys did great work today.

Speaker 1

我特别喜欢这句话。

And I love this phrase.

Speaker 1

我喜欢是因为每次我说这句话的时候,就觉得一切都结束了。

I love it because when I'm saying it, I'm like, all done.

Speaker 1

你知道的吧。

You know?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

感觉真不错。

It feels good.

Speaker 1

听着挺舒服的。

It has a good feeling to it.

Speaker 1

你知道的吧。

You know?

Speaker 1

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 1

这是一天的

It's the end of the

Speaker 0

结束。

day.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

我们可以说今天到此为止,也可以说今晚到此为止。

Or we can call it a day, but we can also call it a night.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

所以这个说法更偏向于真的要去睡觉了。

So you this one is more about actually going to bed.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

说‘到此为止’挺有意思,因为通常我们都是在一天结束时这么说。

So call it's interesting because you would say call it a day usually at the end of the day.

Speaker 0

我们现在把这一天标为结束,它就要成为过去了。

We're we're labeling this was a day and now it's gonna be in the past.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

不过当我们说‘咱们早点休息吧’,意思就更偏向于该睡觉了。

So but when we say let's call it a night, it's more, okay, let's call it a night.

Speaker 0

我的意思是,你睡前说‘咱们结束吧’也可以,说‘咱们早点休息吧’也行。

I mean, you could say let's call it a day when you're going to sleep, but you could also say let's call it a night.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

这有点像晚上发生了一些事情。

It's it's kinda like there's been something happening in the evening.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

比如你刚招待了朋友。

Like, maybe you've had friends over Yeah.

Speaker 1

打打牌什么的。

To play cards or something.

Speaker 1

你是主人,就对大家说:嘿,各位。

And, you know, you're the host, and you're just saying like, hey, guys.

Speaker 1

我累了。

I'm tired.

Speaker 1

咱们今天就到这儿吧。

Let's call it a night.

Speaker 1

其实就是暗示大家该走了。

And you're basically saying leave my home.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我们之前做过几期关于这个的。

We we've done episodes about this.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 1

想方设法让客人在晚上结束时离开你家。

Trying to get people to leave your home at the end of the night.

Speaker 1

去看看过去几个月的那些节目吧。

And so check out those episodes from the last couple of months.

Speaker 1

我家。

My home.

Speaker 1

好吧。

Okay.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

所以要么说‘咱们今晚就到这儿吧’,或者不管晚上有什么活动都行。

So let's call it a night or, I don't know, just any any event is happening in the evening.

Speaker 1

不过你不会在下班时这么说吧,Michelle?

You wouldn't say this like at the end of a workday though, would you, Michelle?

Speaker 1

我的意思是,下午五点哪能叫‘晚上结束了’呢,天还没黑呢。

I mean, at 5PM, you wouldn't call it a night because it's not the nighttime yet.

Speaker 0

那还是说今天到此为止吧。

So call it a day still.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

真有意思。

So interesting.

Speaker 0

但听起来可能就像这样。

But it it might sound like this.

Speaker 0

我累坏了。

So I'm exhausted.

Speaker 1

我也是。

Me too.

Speaker 1

咱们今晚就到这儿吧。

Let's call it a night.

Speaker 1

或者你晚上和伴侣一起组装家具,比如宜家的那些。

Or maybe you're assembling furniture with your partner in the evening, your IKEA furniture.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

结果就是怎么也弄不完。

And you just can't quite finish it.

Speaker 1

干脆就撂在这儿不管了。

And you just say, let's leave everything here.

Speaker 1

明天再弄吧。

We'll do it in the morning.

Speaker 1

咱们休息吧。

Let's call it a night.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

你这算是认输了。

You're kinda giving up

Speaker 1

因为你这是把当天要做的事全放弃了。

for you're just giving up whatever you're doing for the day.

Speaker 0

明白吧?

Alright?

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

所以这些说法很相似。

So similar phrases.

Speaker 0

这个说法来自扑克牌游戏。

So this one comes from poker.

Speaker 0

该弃牌时就弃牌。

So know when to fold them.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

我觉得这句还出现在一首歌里。

That's in a I think that's in a song.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

我觉得这好像是首老乡村歌曲里的歌词。

I think it's in, like, an old country song or something.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

放弃。

Give up.

Speaker 1

所以没人选择认输。

So no one to fold them.

Speaker 1

我不是特别玩扑克的人,但我想当你弃牌的时候,

So I'm not really a poker player, but I guess when you give up your hand

Speaker 0

是啊。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

你弃牌,就是觉得

You fold, you

Speaker 1

自己肯定能赢。

know that you're gonna win.

Speaker 1

是这样吗?

Is that what it is?

Speaker 1

还是

Or

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

你知道自己会输。

You know you're gonna lose.

Speaker 1

会输。

Gonna lose.

Speaker 1

当然了。

Of course.

Speaker 0

这说得通。

That makes sense.

Speaker 1

这么一说更明白了。

Makes a lot more sense.

Speaker 0

你放弃是因为你觉得自己会赢。

You give up because you're gonna win.

Speaker 0

这就像是

It's like

Speaker 1

我不该玩扑克。

I should not play poker.

Speaker 1

不对。

No.

Speaker 1

尤其是不能拿钱去玩。

Especially not with money.

Speaker 0

不对。

No.

Speaker 0

那你还在争取那个大客户吗?

So are you still trying to land that big client?

Speaker 1

哦,没有。

Oh, no.

Speaker 1

我试过,但我知道什么时候该认输。

I gave it a shot, but I know when to fold them.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

这个你可能不会太常听到,但偶尔也会碰到。

This one you're not gonna hear necessarily as much, but you might.

Speaker 0

现在你明白了吧,这到底是什么意思。

And now you know, I mean, what it means.

Speaker 0

所以就是这样。

So Yeah.

Speaker 0

我真不敢相信我居然又跟他约了会。

Or I can't believe I went on another date with him.

Speaker 0

那简直糟透了。

It was terrible.

Speaker 1

米歇尔,你得学会适时放手。

Michelle, you gotta know when to fold him.

Speaker 1

这种情况很少见,真的更少见。

It's a rare it's more rare.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

我们从那首乡村歌曲里听过这个词,作为母语者当然懂,但平时其实很少用。

We know it from that one country song and we know the phrase as native speakers, but we probably don't use it that much.

Speaker 1

可能一年才用一两次吧。

Maybe once a year or something.

Speaker 1

我不太确定。

I don't know.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

不过这个说法更常见一些,我觉得。

But this one is more common, I think.

Speaker 0

认输

Throw in the towel.

Speaker 0

对

Yes.

Speaker 0

我同意

I agree.

Speaker 0

没错

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

也就是放弃的意思

So also give up.

Speaker 0

这说法其实来自拳击

So this is, like, from boxing.

Speaker 0

当拳手撑不住的时候,教练就会把毛巾扔进拳台里

So a coach throws a towel in the ring when the fighter is done.

Speaker 0

好吧。

Okay.

Speaker 1

我一直好奇这个说法是从哪儿来的。

I always wondered where that one comes from.

Speaker 1

这还挺有意思的。

So that's interesting.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

那你还在为马拉松训练吗?

So are you still training for the marathon?

Speaker 1

没有。

No.

Speaker 1

我放弃了。

I threw in the towel.

Speaker 1

我的膝盖实在受不了了。

My knees just couldn't handle it.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

好吧

Okay.

Speaker 0

还是你把水槽修好了?

Or were you able to fix the sink?

Speaker 1

我也只好放弃了。

I had to throw in the towel.

Speaker 1

我试了好几个小时,最后还是叫了水管工。

I tried for hours and then finally just called the plumber.

Speaker 1

没错。

Absolutely.

Speaker 1

你

You

Speaker 0

什么都做不了。

can't do anything.

Speaker 1

我当初就该这么做的。

I probably should've done that originally.

Speaker 1

我知道我不是那种会修东西的人。

I know I'm not a fix it person.

Speaker 1

我根本就不是这种人。

I'm just not that person.

Speaker 1

我不擅长修东西。

I don't

Speaker 0

你这儿都快散架了。

fix You're falling apart here.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

我也不是。

I'm not either.

Speaker 0

我得给几个人打电话,不过没关系。

I I I have to call people, but that's alright.

Speaker 0

咱们来角色扮演一下,看看这整个情况是怎么串起来的。

So let's do a role play and see how this all fits together.

Speaker 1

好。

Alright.

Speaker 1

你看,咱们俩在这儿,朋友之间。

So here we are friends.

Speaker 1

晚上打电话聊天。

We're talking on the phone at night.

Speaker 1

正聊一部刚看完的奈飞剧集。

We're discussing a Netflix series that we've watched.

Speaker 1

明白吧?

Alright?

Speaker 0

明白。

Alright.

Speaker 0

开始了。

Here we go.

Speaker 1

那你最后看《怪奇物语》了吗?

So did you finally see stranger things?

Speaker 0

哦,我试过了。

Oh, I tried.

Speaker 0

我看了前三集,但实在看不下去了。

I watched the first three episodes, but I have to call it.

Speaker 0

我对科幻题材真的提不起兴趣。

I'm just not into sci fi.

Speaker 1

我完全理解。

I completely get that.

Speaker 1

该放手时就得放手。

You have to know when to fold them.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我确实给了它机会。

I definitely gave it a chance.

Speaker 0

那你呢?

What about you?

Speaker 0

你把整部剧看完了?

Did you finish the series?

Speaker 1

我快看到最后几集了,但实在太晚了。

I'm on the last few episodes, but it's so late.

Speaker 1

我得去睡觉了。

I'm gonna have to call it a night.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

你知道吗?

You know what?

Speaker 0

你说得对。

You're right.

Speaker 0

我该去睡觉了。

I better get to bed.

Speaker 1

我也是。

Me too.

Speaker 0

好。

Alright.

Speaker 0

回头再聊。

Talk to you later.

Speaker 1

再见。

Bye.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

行。

Alright.

Speaker 1

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 1

所以这里我们用了很多日常表达、一些习语,还有今天教给大家的主要内容。

So here, we're using lots of the expressions, some of the idioms, and some of and some of the main things that we taught our listeners today.

Speaker 1

那米歇尔,你最先说的是什么?

So, Michelle, what did you say first?

Speaker 1

我问你,你看过《怪奇物语》吗?

I asked you, did you see Stranger Things?

Speaker 1

米歇尔,这部剧是你自己在追的吗?

And is this a series that you watch yourself, Michelle?

Speaker 1

《怪奇物语》?

Stranger Things?

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

这部剧适合你吗?

Is it for you?

Speaker 1

我不太看这类剧。

It's not for me.

Speaker 1

但我知道这部剧很火。

But I know it's popular.

Speaker 1

我猜有很多人看。

I bet a

Speaker 0

很多观众都在追。

lot of people listen to it.

Speaker 0

特别喜欢。

Love it.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

我说我看了前三集,但后来就弃了。

And I said, I watched the first three episodes, but I had to call it.

Speaker 0

是啊。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

所以我之后就没再看了。

So I didn't watch it anymore.

Speaker 0

林赛,你有没有过这种感觉?别人总说这部剧特别棒,但你得熬过前面几集才行,这事儿我觉得特别有意思。

Lindsey, do you ever feel I I it's always so interesting to me when people say, oh, this show is amazing, but, like, you just have to get through the first few episodes.

Speaker 0

你得熬过去,对吧?

You just have to get through and right?

Speaker 0

你有没有听过别人这么说?

You hear people say that?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

我

I

Speaker 0

明白。

know.

Speaker 0

他们说后面真的越来越精彩。

They're saying it it gets really good.

Speaker 0

然后呢,也就这样吧。

And and it's like, okay.

Speaker 0

嗯,是这样。

Well,

Speaker 1

如果我想看,那当然好。

if I wanna Great.

Speaker 1

现在这么一说,倒像是在干活了。

Do Now I just It makes it sound like work.

Speaker 1

我要是想干活,自己去干就是了。

If I wanna do work, I'll do work.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

前几集里总得有点什么能抓住我的地方。

If I there has to be something in the first couple of episodes that hook me.

Speaker 0

还得有点意思。

And be

Speaker 1

在里面。

in it.

Speaker 1

所以是这样。

So yeah.

Speaker 1

我也不太明白这一点。

I I also don't really get that.

Speaker 1

感觉就像在干活。

It seems like work.

Speaker 1

当我只是得

When I just have to

Speaker 0

熬过去的时候。

get through it.

Speaker 0

这太糟糕了。

That's terrible.

Speaker 0

但最后会有回报。

And then it pays off.

Speaker 0

我的意思是

I mean

Speaker 1

到了晚上,打开奈飞的时候,你只想轻松看看,别无他求。

At the end of the night, when you turn on Netflix, you're like, all you want is just to be entertained, and that's it.

Speaker 1

你根本不想动脑筋。

You don't want to work.

Speaker 1

对啊。

Right.

Speaker 1

你不想逼着自己

You don't wanna have to be

Speaker 0

要是我再努力点,就能把这几集刷完了。

like, well, if I just work harder, I can get through these episodes.

Speaker 0

然后呢,确实如此。

And then yeah.

Speaker 0

这就像是

It's like a

Speaker 1

早上回去上班的时候,那种心态真够呛。

bunch attitude for the morning when you're back to work or something.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

这总让我觉得好笑。

It's what always makes me laugh.

Speaker 0

那你后来怎么说的?

And then what did you say?

Speaker 1

我说,我完全理解。

I said, I completely get that.

Speaker 1

你得知道什么时候该放手。

You have to know when to fold them.

Speaker 1

所以我只是想说,我明白你为什么不再看那个剧了。

So I'm just saying I understand why you stopped watching that show.

Speaker 1

这种事看书的时候也会发生。

Like and this can happen with a book too.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我就是那种,看书的时候总不知道该什么时候放弃。

I'm that I don't know when to fold anything when I'm reading a book.

Speaker 0

我就想着,也许后面会变精彩。

I'm just like, maybe it'll get good.

Speaker 0

说不定会好起来。

It might get better.

Speaker 0

估计后面会挺不错的。

It's probably gonna be good.

Speaker 1

所以你就硬着头皮一直看下去。

So you just keep plowing through.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

硬着头皮看下去。

Plowing through.

Speaker 0

这话说得真到位。

That's a good one.

Speaker 0

好吧。

Okay.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yep.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

然后你说我问你,你把那部剧看完了没?

And then you said I said, did you finish series?

Speaker 0

你说你只剩最后几集了,但时间太晚了。

And you said, I'm on the last few episodes, but it's so late.

Speaker 0

听起来你是在追剧,但还挺有分寸的。

So it sounds like you're binge watching, but you're being very responsible.

Speaker 0

你说你得休息了,该睡觉了。

And you say, I'm gonna have to call it a night.

Speaker 0

所以你得关掉,去睡觉了。

So you're gonna have to turn it off, go to sleep.

Speaker 1

去睡觉吧。

Go to sleep.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

就是这样。

There you go.

Speaker 1

这些都是表达收尾的好说法。

So these are great ways to say that you're wrapping something up.

Speaker 1

你不会继续做这件事了。

You're not gonna continue with something.

Speaker 1

有些事就是不太适合你。

Something is just kinda not working for you.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

没关系的。

That's alright.

Speaker 1

今天节目很棒,米歇尔。

Good episode today, Michelle.

Speaker 1

大家去2574号网站看看。

Guys, go over to 2574.

Speaker 1

趁还没用上之前,先把英语学好。

Learn this English well before you need it.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

我们喜欢在事情迫在眉睫之前就把它们做好。

We like to do things well before we they have to be done.

Speaker 1

我们会提前做好准备。

We prepare ahead of time.

Speaker 1

所以去把那些词汇学了吧。

So go learn that vocabulary.

Speaker 1

Michelle,今天你有什么最终的体会吗?

And, Michelle, any final takeaway for today?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我觉得,要明白什么时候该坚持下去,确实需要一定的情商。

I I think it does take a certain emotional intelligence to know when do I keep on going?

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

什么时候该放手呢?

When do I call it?

Speaker 0

这也反映出我们的文化特点。

And also it says a lot about our culture.

Speaker 0

我很想听听听众们的想法:在你们的文化里,放弃是可以接受的吗?

So I'd be curious to hear from our listeners, is your culture is it is it okay to give up?

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

完全没错。

Totally.

Speaker 1

我刚才想的也正是这个,米歇尔。

That is exactly what I was thinking too, Michelle.

Speaker 1

这真是个特别好的共鸣点。

So this is a great connection moment.

Speaker 1

你可以跟别人聊聊彼此文化中对放弃的看法。

You could start a conversation with someone about their culture and your culture.

Speaker 1

不同文化里,关于放弃的故事都是怎样的?

What are the narratives around giving up?

Speaker 1

你知道在美国文化里是怎样的。

Know what it is in American culture.

Speaker 1

就是绝对不能放弃。

It's very much never give up.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 1

但人的心理还有一种现象,叫沉没成本。

But there's also this there's also something that happens in our human mind, the sunk cost phenomenon.

Speaker 1

一旦在某件事上投入了钱或精力,就算不顺利,也很难抽身离开。

When we've already put in a certain amount of money or work into something, we have a harder time walking away from it even when it's not working out.

Speaker 1

这就跟我们的文化观念冲突了,于是就引发了很多深入的讨论。

So that kind of collides with our cultural narratives and we get into some really robust conversations here.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错

Exactly.

Speaker 1

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

很有意思

Very interesting.

Speaker 1

你们找母语者聊聊这个话题吧

Guys, have a conversation with someone with a native speaker about this.

Speaker 1

问问他们那边的文化是怎样的

Ask them about their culture.

Speaker 1

还可以深入了解下,小时候给你们讲的童话故事,或者常听的儿歌、读的绘本

Also get into, like, what are the fairy tales that you were read as a kid or, like, the songs you consume, the the storybooks that we read to children.

Speaker 1

这些能让你对自身文化有更深的理解

That will tell you so much about your own culture.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

正是如此。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

完美。

Perfect.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

很高兴今天我们聊了这个话题。

Well, I'm glad we talked about this today.

Speaker 0

Lindsay,我们要不要就此结束?

And, Lindsay, should we call it?

Speaker 1

就这么定了。

Let's call it.

Speaker 1

是的

Yep.

Speaker 1

已经结束了。

It's been called.

Speaker 0

已经结束了。

It's been called.

Speaker 0

这就结束了。

Calling it.

Speaker 0

好。

Alright.

Speaker 0

再见,

Bye,

Speaker 1

各位。

guys.

Speaker 1

保重。

Take care.

Speaker 1
