嘿,Lindsay。
Hey, Lindsay.
How are you?
我很好,Michelle。
I'm good, Michelle.
Glad to be on the mic with you today.
How's it going on your end?
对。
Yeah.
Everything's good over here.
Happy to be recording as well.
对。
Yeah.
当然。
Absolutely.
So, Michelle, today we're talking about getting really excited about something.
And that's totally cool that it's so human and it's actually a quality that I really admire in people when they're super excited about something.
But what happens is they tend to talk about it a lot.
是的。
Yes.
And then other people might get really bored.
Is there anything that you recently were excited about and couldn't stop talking about?
So I think for it's more for Dan and actually my sister-in-law.
They're both using she recommended this health app.
好的。
Sure.
That he is now using it, and they love to talk about it and explain why it's good.
I mean, I I actually she's more the one that's gonna talk about it a lot.
Okay.
好的。
Okay.
But she because she's she's just like, it's it's I mean, it is very interesting, especially if you're interested in health and nutrition and things like that.
对。
Yeah.
当然。
Sure.
So yeah.
But they're both super excited about it.
Mhmm.
对。
Yeah.
My dad was kinda like this growing up.
He would get really excited about the latest tech things even though he wasn't very techy.
And so he would kinda be talking about maybe, I don't know, just even just the Internet or something back in the nineties or little things, but he wouldn't really understand them completely, but he would talk about them all the time.
So he'd be so excited.
It's kinda cute.
Aw.
But it can be nauseating too.
Right?
Like, if you
It's true.
It's, like, fun to see somebody's passion.
对。
Yeah.
I mean, I think you should if you're gonna be so excited about something that you're talking about it all the time, it should be something that you think the other person may be interested in
as That's kind of the key the key piece today.
Right?
是的。
Yeah.
We have to have that awareness of do they actually want to be hearing how much I'm talking about this thing?
Michelle, why is this important?
What do you think for connection?
Oh gosh.
Because if you're just gonna go on and on about, you know, if you if you're gonna talk about, like, accounting, you
know, a
new accounting software you're using at work and you're gonna share it with your friend who is a who is like a a teacher,
like a
English teacher.
Not gonna work.
You know, it's just kind of gonna make them glaze over.
Right?
We have to have that awareness of Mhmm.
What people will be interested in.
But, I mean, it can be really endearing when somebody is super excited about something and their face lights up, and it can be contagious.
I mean, this is why we go to conferences.
对。
Yeah.
Because it's so refreshing.
When I go to the podcast conference, it's always really fun because people get into the real tech.
I'm not even that into the techy side.
We just buy microphones and we plug them in and we we start the show.
Right?
But, like, some people really get into the techy side of the equalizers and this and that.
And but it's fun to see that level of passion around something.
You know?
Life is just life is hard sometimes.
Right?
And so it's cool to have something you love so much.
是的。
Yeah.
But make sure you keep the I think what you're saying here, Michelle, is keep it to the right circles in a way.
对。
Yes.
没错。
Exactly.
That shows a certain level of, you know, culture of awareness.
对。
Yeah.
Social awareness.
There's a conference for everything.
Every weird niche interest you have, there is a conference for it.
So check that out, guys.
But Michelle, what happens if we make the mistake and we realize, oops, I'm talking to this teacher about this new accounting software.
It's a mismatch.
What, you know?
It doesn't yeah.
I mean, it doesn't necessarily we're talking about like, it it could be a mismatch, but it could also just be kind of a, you know you're talking a lot.
Right?
You're you know?
So it it really it really could be either one of those.
So but today we're gonna talk about yeah.
How can you say that you're excited about something and you're sorry for talking about it so much?
That's that's So you know you're overly excited.
You're talking about something a lot.
And it also this is useful for helping you tell if you should keep going or if you should change the topic.
对。
Yeah.
I mean, the first rule of when you realize you're talking too much is talk less.
Stop talking as
那样。
much.
对。
Yeah.
But maybe there's a bridging phrase where we can get signals from the person.
Right?
Because maybe they are interested in it.
Maybe that teacher is interested in Sure.
Moving into accounting.
Who knows?
Or they're just techy or some or into numbers.
So these phrases we're gonna teach you today are kind of that bridging they're a bit a bit of a check a check-in of is this okay?
Right?
Or maybe I'm about to transition, but I'm going to tell you one more story or something.
Right?
是的。
Yep.
没错。
Exactly.

对。

Go ahead.
But I also wanna say something special is that if you go watch us on YouTube today, you will see that Lindsay and I are matching.
对。
Yeah.
Not even on purpose.
We matched today.
Same color blue.
We just seem to love the color blue.
对。
Yeah.
Something special there today.
Something, yeah, something happened today.
So so I'm surprised that doesn't happen more often.
I know.
It's good.
对。
Yeah.
好了。
Alright.
So alright.
Lindsay?
So what can you say, Lindsay?
What's the first thing?
好的。
Alright.
So the first thing is sorry.
I know I'm rambling.
At So least this is showing that self awareness that we talked about before, which is a huge key for connection.
It's hard to connect with someone that's really not very self aware.
是的。
Yes.
You know?
对。
Yeah.
So here's what it sounds like.
So anyway, I started at this gym because my friend told me about it and sorry, I know I'm rambling.
So here I'm actually cutting myself off mid sentence.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
And I'm checking in with you.
对。
Yeah.
So, I mean, that's that's a good thing.
Or sorry I'm talking about this so much.
Okay?
Mhmm.
So the dog walking service, like I said, has literally changed my life.
Sorry I'm talking about this so much.
对。
Yeah.
And and this is a reliability.
I mean, honestly, so I now have a kid, so it's a little bit different.
But I could say that sometimes if people have kids and then they're hanging out with their friend who doesn't have kids and they talk about their kids all the time, it can be really hard for the other side.
Right?
Like Yeah.
Or even dogs maybe.
I probably talk about my dog too much.
I probably do this with kefir.
对。
Yeah.
We're all guilty of this in some way, but we have to know the topics that really can can happen a lot.
对。
Yeah.
And sometimes when I, like, just the other week I went out with a friend and you know, both, our kids are friends we, but we went out just as moms and we had a great time and we, but we said, okay, we can't, like, we were both, like, okay.
We don't wanna talk about our kids the whole time.
You know?
This is Yeah.
So it's a you'll still kinda stop each other.
Like, okay.
We could talk about them for one more minute or when you're on a date too.
Like, with Right.
About going out with Dan.
好的。
Okay.
We shouldn't talk about them the whole time.
But Of course.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
不。
No.
And and these phrases could apply there too, for sure.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
These are really good.
So alright.
Dog walking service.
So the next one, I'm talking your ear off about this.
I know.
So much self awareness there.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
Are we really talking someone's ear off?
No, their ears not going to fall off, but it feels like it will.
对。
Right.
是的。
Yeah.
So that's a common expression.
So remember what I was saying about that new cafe?
Well, okay.
I'm talking your ear off about this.
I know.
So my question here is like, what happens next?
So so the purpose of this is sort of acknowledging I have that self awareness that I'm doing this.
Am I gonna wait for permission to keep going?
That the person's gonna say, no.
不。
No.
I wanna hear about it.
Am I gonna give the person a chance to pivot to another like, what what happens next is kinda my question.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
That's a great question.
So after the break, we are going to talk a little about expressions that, you know, are, you know, more encouraging.
But it I mean, yeah, that is a good question.
I mean, if you say, I'm talking your ear off about this, I know.
And they do you just Right.
对。
Yeah.
What are we like,
you know, what happens?
Either I think you can either start if you if you feel like you're not sure, you can kinda start to wrap it up.
对。
Mhmm.
Right?
Just say, like, you know, finish your thought and then maybe try and move on.
That's what I would say.
Unless you kinda get this enthusiastic, let's keep going.
What do
对。
you Yeah.
Think you're probably right.
I think you're probably right.
It's it's the awareness.
Just by saying this, you're miles ahead, right?
Because a lot of people that get really, really deep into topics don't have that awareness that they are that deep.
And they not just may not get the cues or something, Right?
And so Mhmm.
This is way ahead of the game.
Already just acknowledging, hey.
I know this is maybe not your thing.
But, Michelle, what do you think about apologizing?
Right?
I mean, should we
be apologetic?
Is it okay to be because we're kind of apologizing here.
Sorry.
Sorry.
对。
Right.
I mean, I I I think it's okay sometimes, but I don't think you wanna be known as the person who is always saying, sorry.
I'm talking about this.
Sorry.
I'm talking about this.
Like, don't apologize for who you are or what you're excited about.
I mean but I do think that, you know, it is natural in conversation to say something like this if you're talking a lot about something.
What do you think?
对。
Yeah.
I think it's pretty natural.
I think that's how we might open as we taught you guys.
对。
Yeah.
Two out of the three phrases that we taught you do start with a sorry, and you could change that.
You could say, I apologize if you want to be more formal.
But yeah, think it's kind of nor it is kind of an apology in itself.
But I agree with you, Michelle.
You don't want to be that person that's apologizing for your weirdness, your uniqueness, because that's what people love about people too.
Right?
Like one thing that we've said about our kid, we want to make sure our kid loves something.
Like it has some kind of interests that they really love, that they're passionate about.
I think that's an important part of life, don't you think?
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
当然。
Definitely.
对。
Yeah.
Sorry.
Go go ahead.
不。
No.
不。
No.
I think I I yeah.
I think it's great.
I think it's it's great to have some sort of passion.
So to be able to share that with others is huge.
对。
Yeah.
And the reality is if you're hanging out with people and they don't wanna hear at all about these weird things that you're excited about, like maybe they're not great conversation partners or great friends, and they don't see you.
You you're really into monster trucks or like, I don't know, like whatever it is you're into maps.
对。
Yeah.
There's there's a side of it there too.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
确实。
Definitely.

好的。
Okay.
好,Michelle。
Alright, Michelle.
Then what's the other side?
Let's talk about that.
So let's say you wanna be encouraging.
You you wanna share that you're happy to hear from your friend about something.
So let's talk about some things you can say.
So you could say something like, no, I love hearing about this.
对。
Yes.
Or not at all.
This is so interesting.
Keep going.
Right?
是的。
Mhmm.
对。
Yeah.
Or this one is a little bit of a risky one, but this is a if you feel like your personality is a little bit more sarcastic, you could say something like, oh, don't worry about it.
I'm just gonna make you listen to my stories about blank.
好。
Okay.
So, oh, don't worry about it.
I'm just gonna make you listen to my stories about my workout plan.
Now this is, I mean, this is really very specific.
This is like for your closest friend.
对。
Yeah.
They're just no.
You're kidding.
But it's just a fun thing I wanted to add in to make a little joke.
不。
No.
That and that's another good topic idea.
You know, people run marathons and they dedicate their entire outside of work lives to preparing for this marathon.
And that's another topic people could get really into and talk about for Yeah.
A long Yeah.
好的。
Okay.
Michelle, let's do some examples and see.
Let's put all this together that we've been learning today.
K?
好。
Yeah.
We're gonna do a few different role plays.
So here we go.
In this first one, you are my friend, and you were talking to me all about your new food prep plan.
好的。
Okay.
不错。
Cool.
行。
Alright.
So anyway, I'm able to use a bag of sweet potatoes for the whole week.
Oh, sorry.
I know I'm rambling.
Oh, Lindsay, not at all.
This is so interesting.
I've always wanted to try food prepping.
That's a big hot topic too.
That's a good one.
Let's should we go through all the role play or should we go through go back and review?
I guess let's I guess let's go through each one now.
So Yeah.
Let's do it.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
So you said so anyway, so you're talking to me about, you know, your meal prepping.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
You you might hear meal prepping.
You might hear food prepping.
对。
Yeah.
Food prep.
So you said, anyway, I'm able to use a bag of sweet potatoes for the whole week.
And then you said, sorry.
I know I'm rambling.
对。
Yeah.
So I kind of catch myself there.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
And then you so you're saying, oh, it's not a problem.
You said, not at all.
This is so interesting.
And not at all means what?
Not at all,
like Don't be sorry.
Like, not being sorry about.
Or you're not rambling at all is, you know, that it's it's okay.
Giving you permission.
对。
Exactly.
And then I added on to show you that I'm really am interested.
Like, oh, I've always wanted to try food prepping.
是的。
Yes.
好。
Okay.
Let's do another here.
You are my sister talking to me about the latest art project.
好的。
Okay.
好的。
Okay.
Here we go.
So I'm really trying to use acrylics, which I'm so excited about.
Sorry.
I'm talking about this so much.
Oh, don't worry about it.
I'm just gonna make you listen to my stories about my vacation.
成交。
Deal.
对。
Right.
So, yeah, this is good for sisters.
Right?
Mhmm.
Mhmm.
是的。
Yeah.
Someone you have a special relationship with and so, I mean, like, what is the so okay.
Let's well, first of all, I said, I'm talking about my painting, and then I said, sorry.
I'm talking about this so much.
对。
Mhmm.
是的。
Yep.
是的。
Yep.
That's the apology.
And then I accepted it, and I said, oh, don't worry.
I'm just gonna make you listen to my ex, like, whatever it is, to my stories about my vacation, my marathon training plan or whatever it is.
好的。
Okay.
And what do what do we like?
What are we getting at here?
There's a little bit of pushback, little sarcasm, I guess.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
Or what do you think, Michelle?
是的。
Yeah.
I think so too.
I think it's just I think it's pretty sarcastic.
It's like, oh, me maybe this is kind of dry, and so I'm just gonna hit you back with something else dry and, you know, so it's 's just kinda funny.
It's got like a hint of passive aggressiveness, I guess, a little bit.
对。
Yeah.
But it's like all in good fun.
Like, you wouldn't say this to someone seriously.
不会。
No.
对。
No.
对。
No.
对。
No.
That would that'd be a really great way to lose a friend.
是的。
Yeah.
Because connection is voluntary.
No one is required to sit there and talk with you.
Right?
I mean Exactly.
好。
Okay.
Last one.
We are acquaintances getting coffee because we just ran into each other.
And I'm telling you about the coffee making that I'm getting into.
That's another interesting weird hobby.
Right?
So here we go.
对。
Yeah.
So I use really fresh beans.
I'm really picky about them.
I'm talking your ear off about this.
I know.
Uh-oh.
不。
No.
I love hearing about this.
I'm a coffee lover myself.
不错。
Nice.
好的。
Alright.
So I've Mhmm.
So maybe I would continue there, but then I would hopefully, after another turn, I would turn it back to you.
So what kind of coffee do you like?
Right?
Because you you said you're a coffee lover.
So I wanna come back to you and understand your take on coffee.
对。
Yeah.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
And I mean, if you aren't interested in what the other person has to say, I I mean, I feel like you just have to listen.
你就
You just
听着。
have listen.
What do you think?
对。
Yeah.
And then maybe you just don't accept their invite for coffee next time.
I don't know.
对。
Yeah.
I I if somebody's really excited about something I mean, like, if they say to you, sorry.
I'm talking about this so much.
I mean, you don't need to go over the top and say, oh, I love hearing about this.
But you could say, oh, don't worry about it.
Like, you could still use these and just not add anything.
And, you know, they they might start to pick up on it.
But at the same time, you know, like, we're talking about connection here.
If you I just think at this point, it's a good it's just good to always stay open and to listen.
I mean Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
You can't really say, oh, let's talk about this instead.
Right?
Is what you're saying?
对。
Yeah.
Like, yeah.
You're right.
I don't wanna talk about this anymore.
You can't like, we're not gonna do that.
就是
Like
You can't really do that.
It's more about, is this a pattern in someone's behavior that every time you meet, they're talking about themselves?
Right?
Because because that's essentially what they're doing.
Right?
是的。
Yes.
You're talking about your hobby, but is it all focused on them?
Then maybe that's not the person you want to spend time with necessarily, right?
没错。
Exactly.
But if it's just this one time they just went to this conference and they're so excited about their microphone or whatever, fine, you know, is it a path?
Is the question.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Right.
That's a really good point.
So, yeah.
Is do we go through the last
rough one?
对。
Yeah.
确实。
It was.
So I just basically said, Oh, I'm talking your ear off about this.
I know.
Right?
是的。
Yeah.
And you said,
Then I said, no.
I love hearing about this.
I'm a coffee lover myself.
对。
Mhmm.
So, yeah.
These are just I mean, are all pretty common things Yeah.
To and, you know, to build that connection.
So, guys head on over.
We also have episode two thousand six and fifty one that was find out how to use find in three different ways.
Another good one.
不错。
Nice.
对。
Yeah.
That's the takeaway for today.
Self awareness is huge.
I think it's great to be excited about something.
How boring would life be if we didn't have any weird interests, you know?
And around the right person at the right time, totally cool to share it, but showing that you're aware you're talking about that a lot is a big connection skill.
好的?
K?
当然。
Definitely.
好的。
Okay.
好的。
Okay.
Well, I'm glad we talked about this today.
And guys, thank you for listening.
好的。
Alright.
Talk soon, Michelle.
保重。
Take care.
好的。
Alright.
再见。
