用比喻的方式使用字面词汇,精确描述一种情境给你带来的感受。

Use literal words in a more figurative way to describe exactly how a situation made you feel.

Speaker 0

今天就用这四个词来了解怎么做到。

Find out how to do it with these four words today.

Speaker 0

你好,Lindsay。

Hello, Lindsay.

Speaker 0

你今天怎么样?

How are you today?

Speaker 1

我很好,Aubrey。

Good, Aubrey.

Speaker 1

我很高兴能在这里录节目。

I'm excited to be on the microphone.

Speaker 1

你呢?

How about you?

Speaker 1

最近怎么样?

How's it going?

Speaker 0

非常好。

Excellent.

Speaker 0

对,我很好。

Yes, I'm great.

Speaker 0

我有个问题想问你。

I have a question for you.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

你有没有收到过比预期高的账单?

Have you ever gotten a bill that was higher than you expected it to be?

Speaker 1

天哪。

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

现在每次出去吃饭基本上都是这样。

Kind of every time I eat out now.

Speaker 0

每次去餐厅都这样?

Every time I go to a restaurant?

Speaker 1

是啊,每次去餐厅,账单都吓人。

Yeah, every time I go to a restaurant, my bill is ugly.

Speaker 1

那你呢?

What about you?

Speaker 1

有没有什么……

Anything-

Speaker 1

……高得离谱的账单?

... astronomically high?

Speaker 0

我记得有一次,我们在一家餐厅吃饭,服务员推荐了海鲜沙拉。

I can think of a specific example when once we were at a restaurant, and the server recommended the seafood salad.

Speaker 0

菜单上没这个菜,但我们觉得听起来很棒。

And it wasn't on the menu, but we're like, "That sounds amazing."

Speaker 0

他端上来一个巨大的沙拉……

And he brought this giant salad-

Speaker 1

哦

Oh

Speaker 0

……里面全是龙虾和螃蟹,账单来的时候,光沙拉就250美元。

... that had all of this lobster and crab, and when the bill came, just the salad was $250.

Speaker 1

天哪。

Oh my God.

Speaker 0

我们就说,哎呀,早知道该问问价格——

And we were like, "Oh, we should've asked-

Speaker 1

好吧

Okay

Speaker 0

——多少钱的。

... how much it was."

Speaker 1

好吧。

Okay.

Speaker 1

我刚想说我也遇到过类似的事,但我的情况是,我们被推销了一大盘菜。

I was about to chime in and say I had something similar happen, but what happened to me was we were kind of upsold into a plate.

Speaker 1

本来只要花12块的,结果花了35块,但你现在说了250,我都不好意思说了。

Instead of spending $12, it was a $35 meal, but now that you've said 250, I can't say anything.

Speaker 0

太震撼了。

It was shocking.

Speaker 0

太震惊了。

It was shocking.

Speaker 1

真是疯了。

That's insane.

Speaker 0

就连12到35听起来都很多了,哇,250。

Even that 12 to 35 sounds a lot wow, 250.

Speaker 0

确实很多。

It was a lot.

Speaker 1

你-

Did you-

Speaker 0

那是几年前的事了,所以算上通货膨胀,今天听起来就没那么多了。

Which this was years ago, so inflation, that doesn't sound so much today.

Speaker 1

哦,现在那盘菜可能要1000美元了。

Oh, it would be a $1,000 plate now.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

那真的太多了。

It was so much.

Speaker 0

当时我和我丈夫在找一个地方办婚礼午宴。

It was my husband and I, we were trying to find a place to do our wedding luncheon.

Speaker 0

所以那地方比我们平时去的要高档一些。

So it was a nicer place than we would usually go to.

Speaker 0

我们当时和他——

We were with his-

Speaker 0

……的父母还有我的父母在一起,所以他们分摊了账单。

... parents and my parents, and so they split the bill.

Speaker 0

没什么问题,但我们俩都——

It was fine, but both of us were just like-

Speaker 1

哦

Oh

Speaker 0

……有点‘哎呀’的感觉。

... "Whoops."

Speaker 1

哎呀,失误了。

"Oopsies."

Speaker 0

不是故意的,抱歉。

"Didn't mean to do that, sorry."

Speaker 1

他们应该告诉你们的。

They should've told you.

Speaker 0

他们确实应该。

They really should have.

Speaker 0

作为服务员,这样做感觉真的很狡猾——

That felt really sneaky for a server-

Speaker 1

真是狡猾

That's sneaky

Speaker 0

——就那样说:“这个很棒。”

... to just be like, "This is great."

Speaker 1

这就是——

That is the-

Speaker 0

为了多拿点小费呗。

Get a bigger tip

Speaker 1

这在某种程度上就是偷偷摸摸的定义,对吧?

... that's kind of the definition of sneaky in a way, isn't it?

Speaker 0

是的,感觉就是那样。

Yeah, it felt that way.

Speaker 0

不过我很喜欢你管你的账单叫丑。

But I loved that you called your bill ugly.

Speaker 0

这个最近才出现的。

This came up recent.

Speaker 0

这是受最近一集的启发,我们当时在聊我的空调账单。

This was inspired by a recent episode when we were talking about my AC bill.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

夏天的时候,我的电费账单总是特别难看。

And in the summer, my electric bill is always really ugly.

Speaker 1

哦,我相信。

Oh, I'm sure.

Speaker 0

但有趣的是,我们用“ugly”这个词当俚语,意思是——

But it's interesting how we use this word ugly as slang to mean-

Speaker 0

糟糕、令人失望、让人心烦——

... terrible, disappointing, upsetting-

Speaker 1

对。

Yes

Speaker 0

因为当然,我们通常不是这样用“ugly”这个词的。

Because of course, that's not how we usually use the word ugly.

Speaker 1

所以今天,我们要教你们四种好玩的俚语说法,用来形容那些有点让人失望、困难、糟糕,或者你不想面对的事情,也就是不好的情况。

So today, we're going to show you four fun slang ways to describe something that is kind of disappointing or difficult or terrible, or something that you dread, a bad situation.

Speaker 1

明白了吗?

Okay?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

所以——

So-

Speaker 0

因为当事情变得一团糟的时候,这样聊起来也挺有意思的。

Because that's also fun to connect about-

Speaker 1

当然

Sure

Speaker 0

当事情变得非常糟糕的时候。

... when things go terribly wrong.

Speaker 1

是的,绝对是这样。

Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1

所以大家,不管你们在哪里听,现在就去点一下关注按钮吧。

So guys, go ahead and hit that follow button right now, wherever you're listening.

Speaker 1

如果你在YouTube上——你很可能在,因为这个视频就在那里——如果你想通过看视频来学,那也可以。

Definitely do that.

Speaker 1

但如果你是在听播客,就去点播客上的关注,好吗?

But if you're in podcasting, go ahead and hit follow on the podcasts, okay?

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

太好了。

Awesome.

Speaker 0

所以我们要分享四个我们常用的俚语,我们会分享它们的字面意思、通常用法,以及怎么用它们作为俚语来表达……

So we are going to share four slang phrases that we use, and we're going to share both the literal meaning, how we usually use it, and then how we use it as slang to mean-

Speaker 1

是的

Yes

Speaker 0

……就像你说的,糟糕、令人失望。

... like you said, terrible, disappointing.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

太喜欢了。

Love this.

Speaker 1

好,那我们先从“ugly”这个词说起,大家都知道它的常见意思是难看、不吸引人。

Okay, so for the word ugly, starting off here, the familiar meaning that we all know is just unappealing, unattractive.

Speaker 1

比如说,你可能觉得某顶帽子戴在你头上很难看。

Maybe you think a hat looks ugly on you, for example.

Speaker 1

你可能会这么说,或者我也不知道。

You might say that, or I don't know.

Speaker 1

这算是个比较基础的……

It's kind of a basic-

Speaker 1

……词。

... word.

Speaker 1

我觉得可能小孩子会经常用这个词。

I feel like maybe kids might use this word a lot.

Speaker 0

完全同意。

Totally.

Speaker 1

小心一点——

Be careful-

Speaker 0

对,有可能。

Yeah, probably

Speaker 1

……在跟别人说话的时候。

... when you're addressing people.

Speaker 0

或者我可能会说,比如:“有些人可能会觉得这幅画很丑,但我就是喜欢它。”

Or I might say something like, "Some people might think this painting is ugly, but I love it."

Speaker 0

所以我们经常用这个词来谈论风格和品味。

So often we'll use this word to talk about style, taste.

Speaker 0

你可能会看到一件家具,然后心想——

You might find furniture and be like-

Speaker 0

“……一般人可能觉得这个很丑,但我觉得它挺酷的。”

... "The average person might think this is ugly, but I think it's cool."

Speaker 1

就像我之前在节目里说的,我们在丹佛看房的时候,这种情况确实很常见,尤其是在看房的时候。

That's what, like I said on a previous episode, we're looking around at houses in Denver, and that's a thing that happens for sure when you're home shopping.

Speaker 1

你会看到很多丑东西,因为——

There's a lot of ugly stuff that you see because-

Speaker 0

是的

Yes

Speaker 1

……人们自己翻修房子,完全是按自己的品味来的,对吧?

... people renovate their own homes, and they go it by based on their own taste, right?

Speaker 0

没错。

For sure.

Speaker 0

对,我们搬进的第一套公寓里全是壁纸,特别丑。

Yeah, the first condo we moved into had all of this wallpaper, and it was all so ugly.

Speaker 1

哦,是吗。

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

有一面墙上全是超大的红辣椒图案。

One of them had giant red chili peppers all over on the walls.

Speaker 1

天哪,不会吧。

Oh, no.

Speaker 0

那些都太难看了。

They just were all terrible.

Speaker 0

怎么会有人选这种?

How did someone choose this?

Speaker 1

噢,那太搞笑了。

Oh, that's so funny.

Speaker 0

是挺搞笑的。

It's funny.

Speaker 1

但是,如果我们想跳出字面意思,像C2水平的说话者那样,用一些不同的意思来表达呢?

But then, what if we want to go out of the literal meaning and be more of a C2 level speaker, where we're using kind of different meanings for something?

Speaker 1

那是什么意思,奥布里?

What does it mean, Aubrey?

Speaker 1

丑。

Ugly.

Speaker 0

所以我们用它来表示让人不快的、困难的——

So we use this to mean unpleasant, difficult-

Speaker 0

……挺让人失望的。

... disappointing.

Speaker 0

比如说,这次度假回来,我的信用卡账单可能会很难看。

So for example, my credit card bill maybe is going to be ugly after this vacation.

Speaker 0

所以这就是一种有趣的说法,意思是“我不太期待它”。

So it's just an interesting way of saying, "I'm not looking forward to it.

Speaker 0

它会很难看。”

It's going to be ugly."

Speaker 1

难看,或者他们的争吵最后变得很难看。

Ugly, or their argument ended up getting ugly.

Speaker 1

所以“难看”……

So ugly-

Speaker 1

……在谈到争执时经常用到。

... is used frequently when it comes to an altercation.

Speaker 1

当人们以某种方式针锋相对的时候,对吧?

When people are kind of going up against each other in some way, right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

这下要难看了。

This is going to get ugly.

Speaker 1

或者比赛,对吧?

Or a game, right?

Speaker 1

有人被打得落花流水,彻底惨败。

Someone got wiped out, just defeated.

Speaker 1

根本毫无悬念,对吧?

There was no contest, right?

Speaker 0

这个例子很好,对吧?

That's a good example, right?

Speaker 0

就像说:“哎呀,那场面太难看了。”

It would be like, "Ooh, it was ugly."

Speaker 1

那场面确实很难看。

It was ugly.

Speaker 1

不,他们确实会。

No, they do.

Speaker 1

真是难堪。

Ugly.

Speaker 0

而且这挺有意思的。

And it's interesting.

Speaker 0

无论你在说什么,我们都可以在很多不同的场合用到它。

Whatever you're talking about, we can use it in a lot of different contexts.

Speaker 0

我们只是想表达某件事让人很不愉快。

We're just wanting to share that something was unpleasant.

Speaker 0

对某个人来说,进展得不顺利。

It did not go well for someone.

Speaker 1

确实。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

然后还有痛苦。

And then painful.

Speaker 1

那么,它的字面意思是什么?

Now, what does it mean literally?

Speaker 0

所以,当然,这个常见的意思是造成疼痛。

So of course, this familiar meaning is causing pain.

Speaker 0

你可能会说:“我肩膀受伤的时候,疼得要命。”

You might say, "It was extremely painful when I injured my shoulder."

Speaker 0

但和“ugly”很像,我们也用“painful”作为俚语,表示某事令人不快或困难。

But very similar to ugly, we also use painful as slang to mean something's unpleasant or difficult.

Speaker 1

比如,“那个医疗账单会让人心疼。”

Like, "That medical bill is going to be painful."

Speaker 0

或者,“看我以前的试镜录像,真是尴尬得要命。”

Or, "Watching my old audition tape was so painful."

Speaker 0

我就有过这样的经历。

I had this experience.

Speaker 0

我17岁上高中的时候,参加了一个才艺比赛。

I was in this talent competition in high school when I was 17.

Speaker 1

哎哟,天哪。

Oh, jeez.

Speaker 0

然后有几个朋友找到了那盘录像带,还播放了出来。

And then some friends found the tape and played it.

Speaker 0

我当时在演《歌剧魅影》,打扮成魅影的样子,戴着白色面具。

I was playing Phantom of the Opera, dressed as the Phantom of the Opera with the white mask.

Speaker 0

实在是太尴尬了。

It was so embarrassing.

Speaker 0

看着都觉得难受。

It was painful to watch.

Speaker 1

那也太尴尬了吧。

That's so embarrassing.

Speaker 1

或者看照片的时候。

Or looking at photos.

Speaker 1

我记得——

I remember-

Speaker 0

对。

Yes

Speaker 1

……

...

Speaker 1

我学过黑管,其实我特别讨厌黑管,但在学校还是得学。

I played clarinet, which I hated the clarinet, but I played it in school.

Speaker 1

四年级的时候我去参加了一场音乐会,我妈让我穿了那种特别丑的领结,就是配毛衣穿的那种女式领结。

And I went to a concert when I was in fourth grade, and my mom dressed me in this awful tie thing, like a female tie thing that you wear with a sweater.

Speaker 1

你懂我意思吧?

You know what I mean?

Speaker 1

就是,我看起来特别……

Like, I look so-

Speaker 0

我完全懂你的意思。

I know exactly what you mean.

Speaker 0

你看着这些老照片,你当年的……

You're looking at these old photos of your...

Speaker 0

我有一张照片是戴着波洛领带的,还有一张在脖子那儿别了个胸针。

I have one where I was wearing a bolo tie and one with a brooch at my neck.

Speaker 1

天哪。

Oh my God.

Speaker 0

我当时在想什么呢?

Like, what was I doing?

Speaker 1

太尴尬了。

It's so painful.

Speaker 1

而且看这些照片真的让人难受。

And it's so painful to look at photos.

Speaker 1

说实话,回头看自己的一些作品,你也一样吧?

Or even honestly, looking back on any of your, if you have a body of work, right?

Speaker 1

比如这个播客。

For example, this podcast.

Speaker 1

要是回去听《All Ears English》第一期,可能也会觉得挺尴尬的,对吧?

Maybe it would be painful to go back and listen to episode one of All Ears English, right?

Speaker 0

也许吧。

Maybe.

Speaker 0

音质。

Audio quality.

Speaker 1

因为在我们找到自己的风格之前。

Because before we found our voice.

Speaker 0

那也是。

That too.

Speaker 1

音质差,尴尬。

Audio quality, awkwardness.

Speaker 1

我知道我们刚开始录制的时候,是现场录的,前20集每集背景里都有冰箱嗡嗡响的声音。

I know when we started recording, we were recording live, and there was like a humming refrigerator in the background of every episode for the first 20 episodes.

Speaker 0

哦,天哪。

Oh, wow.

Speaker 0

我很好奇听众们有没有这样想过。

I'm curious if you listeners have thought this.

Speaker 0

如果你回去翻档案听一听,你会觉得,哇,跟现在的节目比,这简直惨不忍睹。

If you go back into the archives and listen, you're like, "Wow, this is painful compared to the current episodes."

Speaker 1

确实挺难看的,也挺痛苦的。

It was pretty ugly, pretty painful.

Speaker 0

那太棒了。

That's awesome.

Speaker 1

好的。

All right.

Speaker 1

我们继续下一个,Aubrey。

Let's move on to the next one, Aubrey.

Speaker 1

太残酷了。

Brutal.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

当然,常见的含义是暴力或残忍的。

Of course, the familiar meaning is violent or cruel.

Speaker 0

你可能会说:“电影里的那些场景展示了残酷的军事战术。”

You might say, "The scenes in the film depicted brutal military tactics."

Speaker 0

但我们也把它当俚语用,意思就是“不爽”或“难搞”,就是说某件事太难了。

But we also use this as slang just to mean unpleasant or difficult, that something was brutal.

Speaker 1

是的,没错。

Yes, exactly.

Speaker 1

然后在这个俚语意思下,可以说“这次徒步太难搞了。”

And then in this more slang meaning, "That hike was brutal."

Speaker 1

我每次去徒步都会这么说,对吧?

I say this every time I go for a hike, right?

Speaker 1

我没想到会那么陡。

I didn't realize how steep it would be.

Speaker 0

或者我们在亚利桑那州经常这么说。

Or we say this a lot in Arizona.

Speaker 0

我们会说:“哎,今天热得够呛,”或者“昨天太热了。”

We'll say, "Oh, the heat today is brutal," or, "The heat was brutal yesterday."

Speaker 0

有意思的是,有些词确实更常和特定的事物搭配使用。

So it's interesting because some of these are definitely collocated more often with specific things.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

你可以说‘这热天真难受’或者‘真难看’,但我们一般不这么说。

You could say, "Oh, this heat is painful or ugly," but we don't really.

Speaker 0

我们更常说‘太狠了’。

We're much more likely to say that it's brutal.

Speaker 0

所以你在听英语的时候,留意一下什么时候听到这个词用作俚语。

So as you're listening to English, pay attention to when do you hear this used as slang?

Speaker 0

它通常和哪些词搭配在一起?

What types of things is it being collocated with?

Speaker 1

对。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

我觉得‘brutal’这个词经常和身体的体验搭配,对吧?

I think the brutal is about often collocated with physical experiences, right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

像炎热是一个很棒的体验,比如徒步旅行时。

Where the heat is a great experience, the physical hike.

Speaker 1

你说得对。

But you're right.

Speaker 1

但并不是随便挑一个词就能配上这些形容词。

It's not always just choose a random thing to use one of these adjectives for.

Speaker 1

它们往往和特定类型的话题搭配。

It is collocated with certain types of topics.

Speaker 1

这很有趣。

That's interesting.

Speaker 1

知道这点很好。

Good to know.

Speaker 0

确实很有意思。

It is interesting.

Speaker 1

好的。

All right.

Speaker 1

我们休息回来了,最后一条可不是闹着玩的。

We're back from break, and the last one is no joke.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

这条挺有意思的。

And this is interesting.

Speaker 1

从字面上来说。

So literally.

Speaker 0

我们确实更多用它的字面意思,表示我没有夸张。

We do use this more literally to mean I'm not exaggerating.

Speaker 0

你可能会说,比如,“我排队等了三个小时,没开玩笑。”

You might say, like, "I waited in line for three hours, no joke."

Speaker 0

而我的意思是——

And what I mean is just like-

Speaker 0

……

...

Speaker 0

我不是在夸张。

I'm not exaggerating.

Speaker 1

不是开玩笑。

Not joking.

Speaker 0

我真的等了三个小时。

I actually waited for three hours.

Speaker 1

说实话,光是“没开玩笑”这个词就够做一期节目了。

This could be its own episode, just the phrase no joke, honestly.

Speaker 0

确实有可能。

Could be true.

Speaker 1

但在俚语的意思里,咱们转过来看俚语的意思,就是令人不快、困难,或者也有点要认真对待的意思,我觉得这也是另一种-

But in the slang sense, let's flip over to the slang sense, unpleasant or difficult, or also kind of to be taken seriously, I think, is another-

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

所以-

So-

Speaker 0

这挺有意思的。

That's interesting.

Speaker 0

那我们就把它和这些词当同义词用,对吧?

So we use it synonymously with these, right?

Speaker 0

痛苦的、难看的、残酷的,还有说某事不是开玩笑的。

Painful, ugly, brutal, and to say something's no joke.

Speaker 0

但这个用法更灵活一点。

But this one's a little more flexible.

Speaker 0

我们也会用它来形容其他东西。

We'll also use it with other things as well.

Speaker 0

所以,举几个例子吧。

So a couple examples.

Speaker 0

“我一看到菜单上的价格,就知道这账单肯定不便宜。”

"As soon as I saw the prices on the menu, I knew the bill was going to be no joke."

Speaker 0

这句话也可以说成,这账单会很糟、很痛苦、很惨。

And this you could say was going to be ugly, painful, brutal.

Speaker 1

吓人。

Scary.

Speaker 0

肯定不是闹着玩的。

It was going to be no joke.

Speaker 0

这就是它的意思,就是情况不好。

And that's that meaning of just like, it's not going to be good.

Speaker 1

我觉得现在出去吃饭,一开始总是挺开心挺兴奋的,但越到快结账的时候,气氛就有点尴尬。

So I feel like these days when I go out for dinner, it's all exciting and fun in the beginning, and then as you get closer to when the bill's coming, I feel like the mood kind of gets like

Speaker 0

我也有这种感觉。

I feel like, great.

Speaker 0

这值得吗?

Was this worth it?

Speaker 1

挺有意思的。

It's funny.

Speaker 1

或者机场,对吧?

Or airports, right?

Speaker 1

过机场安检可不容易。

Getting through airport security was no joke.

Speaker 1

我都不敢相信队伍那么长。

I couldn't believe how long the line was.

Speaker 1

然后我还有一个例子。

And then I have another example.

Speaker 1

我有个朋友,我住在科罗拉多,但我以前在波士顿时有个一起徒步的朋友,她来科罗拉多,那时我们都还住在那儿,去爬埃文斯山或其他难度大的徒步路线。

I have a friend, so I live in Colorado, but I had a friend who I used to hike with in Boston, and she came out to Colorado when we were both still living there to hike Mount Evans or one of the big hikes.

Speaker 1

那些著名的大徒步路线,新罕布什尔和科罗拉多的徒步差别可大了。

Big, famous hikes, and the difference between a New Hampshire hike and a Colorado hike is substantial.

Speaker 1

一万四千英尺对四千英尺。

14,000 feet versus 4,000.

Speaker 1

所以她总是说,“那次徒步可不是闹着玩的。”

So she would always say, "That hike is no joke."

Speaker 1

要做好准备,进行训练。

Let's prepare for it, train for it.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Okay?

Speaker 0

就像你说的,确实困难,但需要认真对待。

And like you said, it's more like, yes, difficult, but likes to be taken seriously.

Speaker 1

需要被认真对待。

To be taken seriously.

Speaker 0

所以,是的。

So, yeah.

Speaker 0

有意思。

Interesting.

Speaker 0

所以,那个比较灵活一些。

So yeah, that is a little more flexible.

Speaker 0

我们来做个角色扮演,用上几个这些表达。

Let's do a role play here and use a few of these.

Speaker 0

我正问我朋友林赛关于她最近度假的事。

I am asking my friend Lindsay here about a recent vacation.

Speaker 1

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

我来先开头。

I'll start us out.

Speaker 1

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

你去山里的旅行怎么样?

How was your trip to the mountains?

Speaker 1

说实话,挺辛苦的。

Honestly, it was kind of brutal.

Speaker 1

比我们预想的要热太多了。

It was so much hotter than we expected.

Speaker 0

哦不,那真让人难受,本来想好好享受户外时光,结果天气不给力。

Oh, no. That's always painful when you want to spend time outdoors, and the weather doesn't cooperate.

Speaker 1

我们本来想去爬山,但热得真不是闹着玩的。

We tried to go hiking, but the heat was no joke.

Speaker 1

走了还不到一英里就不得不折返了。

We had to turn back after less than a mile.

Speaker 0

太扫兴了。

What a bummer.

Speaker 0

不过至少你没赶上这里的雨。

Well, at least you missed the rain here.

Speaker 0

那天气糟透了。

It was ugly.

Speaker 0

整个周末都在下雨。

Rained all weekend.

Speaker 1

天哪。

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

好。

Okay.

Speaker 1

这些挺好的。

So these are good.

Speaker 1

我们又提到去徒步了。

And we mentioned hiking again.

Speaker 1

真有意思。

That's so funny.

Speaker 1

这些计划跟我们的性格真是太合拍了。

These plans are very synced up with who we are here.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

是啊,我尽量让角色扮演有点创意,但有时候我也觉得,'这就是我会说的话。'

No, I try to be creative with the role plays, but sometimes I'm like, "This is just something I would say.

Speaker 0

这就是我会进行的对话。

This is a conversation I would have."

Speaker 1

哦,肯定的。

Oh, for sure.

Speaker 1

好的。

All right.

Speaker 1

所以你说的第一句话是:“你去山里的旅行怎么样?”

So the first thing that you said was, "How was your trip to the mountains?"

Speaker 1

我说:“说实话,挺难受的。”

I said, "Honestly, it was kind of brutal."

Speaker 1

比预期的要热得多,比我们预期的要热。

It was much hotter than expected, than we expected.

Speaker 0

对,这也挺有意思的。

Yeah, and this is interesting, too.

Speaker 0

如果你只说“说实话,挺难受的”就完了,那会显得很奇怪。

It would be strange if you just said, "Honestly, it was kind of brutal," full stop.

Speaker 0

因为当我们用这些词的时候,我们其实是在故意营造一种戏剧效果,为接下来要分享的那些困难或者艰难的事情做铺垫。

Because when we use these words, we're sort of intentionally building drama for whatever we're going to share was difficult or tough.

Speaker 0

所以我们就会说,“唉,太难受了”,然后马上接着说为什么。

So we're going to say this like, "Ugh, it was brutal," and then we're going to immediately share why.

Speaker 0

你不会想等着对方问,“哦,到底发生了什么事那么糟糕?”

You wouldn't want to just wait for them to be like, "Oh, what was so terrible?"

Speaker 1

在这种情况下,原因可能有很多。

In this case, it could've been anything else.

Speaker 1

我可以说,“哦,我们当时住在一个小木屋里。”

I could've said, "Oh, we were in a small cabin."

Speaker 0

航班延误了。

Lights delayed.

Speaker 1

“我们没人帮忙带孩子。”

"We had no childcare."

Speaker 1

“我公婆也在。”

"My in-laws were there."

Speaker 0

可以是任何事。

Could be anything.

Speaker 1

你可以—

You could-

Speaker 0

丢了钥匙。

Lost our keys.

Speaker 1

可以是任何情况。

It could've been any situation.

Speaker 0

所以你肯定得给一些细节。

So you've got to give some details.

Speaker 1

对,肯定。

Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1

那之后你说了什么,Aubrey?

And then what'd you say, Aubrey, after that?

Speaker 0

然后我说:“当你想在外面待着,但天气不配合,这总是很难受的。”

Then I said, "Oh, that's always painful when you want to spend time outside, and the weather doesn't cooperate."

展开剩余字幕(还有 93 条)
Speaker 0

所以这也是一个有趣的用法。

So this is a fun way to use that, too.

Speaker 0

比如,我本来可以说……

Here, I could've said...

Speaker 0

挺有意思的,我们大概不会说“当你想在户外待着的时候,天气总是很糟糕”这样的话。

You know, it's interesting, we probably wouldn't say that's always ugly when you want to spend time outdoors.

Speaker 0

这个,如果我们在谈论一次经历——

This, if we're talking about an experience-

Speaker 0

——那次经历很让人郁闷,我们会用“brutal”和“painful”,然后说“哦,每次都是这样,太难受了”或者“太痛苦了”。

... that was frustrating, we would use brutal and painful, and be like, "Oh, that's always brutal when," or "That's painful when."

Speaker 1

或者说,一段经历,让人沮丧,我觉得“frustrating”这个词更贴切。

Or an experience, frustrating is the word, I think.

Speaker 1

就是有东西摆在你面前,但你却做不了,对吧?

Something is dangled in front of you, but you can't do it, right?

Speaker 1

在某种程度上是这样。

In a way.

Speaker 1

这很诱人。

It's tempting.

Speaker 0

所以这里有个有趣的发现,我们通常不会用“ugly”来形容让人沮丧的事情,但我们会用……

So that's an interesting note here, that we wouldn't really use ugly for something that's frustrating, but we would use-

Speaker 1

对。

No

Speaker 0

……“brutal”和“painful”。

... brutal and painful.

Speaker 1

然后我说:“对,我们想去徒步,但天气热得不得了。”

And then I said, "Yeah, we tried to go hiking, but the heat was no joke."

Speaker 1

同样,这也是表示要严肃对待,对吧?

And again, that's to be taken seriously, right?

Speaker 0

我们当然也可以用“brutal”和“painful”来形容天气,说“天气酷热难耐,令人痛苦”。

And we definitely could also say the heat was brutal, painful.

Speaker 0

“no joke”用在这里完全合适。

No joke works perfectly.

Speaker 1

然后你说:“太遗憾了。

And then you said, "What a bummer.

Speaker 1

不过,还好你没赶上这里的雨。

Well, at least you missed the rain here.

Speaker 1

那天天气很糟糕。

It was ugly.

Speaker 1

整个周末都在下雨。”

Rained all weekend."

Speaker 1

哦。

Ooh.

Speaker 0

所以,ugly更多用来表达失望,对吧?

So ugly is used more for disappointing, right?

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

因为你周末很可能本来计划去户外玩一些有趣的活动。

Because you likely had plans to do fun things outside on the weekend.

Speaker 0

所以你可能会说:“哎,真是糟透了。”

So you'd be like, "Ugh, it was so ugly.

Speaker 0

整个周末都在下雨。”

It rained all weekend."

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

真让人失望。

Disappointing.

Speaker 1

这让我想到,这个周末,我的朋友要从新罕布什尔州来看我们的儿子。

It makes me think, this weekend, my friend is coming out to meet our son from New Hampshire.

Speaker 0

好呀。

Fun.

Speaker 1

而且科罗拉多从来都不下雨的。

And it never, ever rains in Colorado.

Speaker 1

我们一直经历着像你们一样的酷暑,每天都超过一百度,结果这个周末却要下雨了。

We've been having the hottest, like you, we've been having a crazy hot summer, in the 100s every day, and then it's supposed to rain all weekend.

Speaker 1

偏偏就是她要来的那个周末。

Just the weekend that she's coming out.

Speaker 0

这听起来就是墨菲定律,对吧?

That sounds like Murphy's Law, right?

Speaker 1

确实是。

It is.

Speaker 0

下雨的可能性有多大,直接取决于你朋友有多想——

The percentage of likelihood that it'll rain is directly proportionate to how much your friends-

Speaker 1

有多少朋友要来。

How many friends are coming

Speaker 0

——喜欢到外面待着,在大太阳底下徒步。

... visiting like to spend time outside, hiking in the sun.

Speaker 1

而且她就是个喜欢户外徒步的人。

And she is an outdoorsy hiker person.

Speaker 1

是的,完全没错。

Yes, exactly.

Speaker 0

如果她是个喜欢下雨的人,那就不会下雨了。

If she's a person that loves rain, then it wouldn't be raining.

Speaker 1

不,当然会是晴天。

No, of course, it would be sunny.

Speaker 1

唉。

Ugh.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

生活就是这样。

That's life for you.

Speaker 1

你得顺其自然,对吧,Aubrey?

You got to just roll with it, Aubrey, right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

我们能怎么办呢?

What can we do?

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

我们能怎么办呢?

What can we do?

Speaker 1

所以大家,去看一下2671期,《夏日狂欢》第四部分。

So guys, go over to 2671, Splash into Summer, part four.

Speaker 1

那是我们的夏日系列。

That is our summer series.

Speaker 1

你的夏天过得怎么样?

How's your summer going?

Speaker 1

是不是……

Isn't it-

Speaker 0

是的,那个系列特别好玩。

Yes, that was such a fun series.

Speaker 0

如果你错过了那些节目,往上面翻一翻,看看呗。

If you missed any of those episodes, scroll up, check them out.

Speaker 0

这些特别适合用来聊某人暑假在做什么,或者做了些什么。

These are so great for having conversations about what someone's doing over the summer, or what they did.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

而且作为要点,这是B2高段、C1水平说话者的标志,就是能够使用这些词汇,不仅仅是按字面意思用。

And for a takeaway, this is the hallmark of a high B2, C1 level speaker, when we're able to take terms, not just use them literally.

Speaker 1

这些词的字面意思,我们大多数人都知道。

We know the literal definitions, most of you do, of all of these words.

Speaker 1

但我们怎么能用得更形象一点,对吧?

But how can we use that in a more figurative way, right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

它们是怎么被当作俚语用的?

How are they being used as slang?

Speaker 0

它们是怎么被用在……

How are they being used-

Speaker 1

对。

Yes

Speaker 0

……以习语的方式?

... idiomatically?

Speaker 0

这是更有趣的含义。

This is the more fun meaning.

Speaker 0

所以要多练习使用这些。

So practice using these.

Speaker 1

这更有趣。

This is more fun.

Speaker 1

是的,这就是我们深入交流的地方,因为我们用更有趣的方式描述生活中的时刻,无论好坏,对吧?

Yep, this is where we get into great connection because we're describing the moments of our life, whether they're good or bad, in a more interesting way, right?

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

不要害怕在不好的事情上与人建立联系。

Don't be afraid to connect about things going badly as well.

Speaker 0

并不是所有事情都——

Not everything's-

Speaker 0

——都会一帆风顺,而在事情不顺的时候,反而是建立深厚关系的好机会。

... going to be sunshine and roses, and that's a great way to bond, is when things go poorly.

Speaker 1

哦,是的。

Oh, yes.

Speaker 1

确实如此。

For sure.

Speaker 1

而且要带上你的故事,对吧?

And bring your stories, right?

Speaker 1

就是这样。

There you go.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

好的,聊得不错。

All right, good stuff.

Speaker 1

奥布里,祝你周末愉快,下周顺利,我们很快再聊。

Aubrey, you have a good weekend, a good week, and I'll talk to you soon.

Speaker 1

好吗?

All right?

Speaker 0

你也是。

You too.
