Is it possible to speak with too much enthusiasm in English?
今天就来揭晓答案,顺便学会把你的词汇从被动积累变成主动使用。
Find out today and learn how to move your vocabulary from passive collection to active use.
你好,Lindsey。
Hello, Lindsey.
你今天怎么样?
How are you today?
你好,奥布里。
Hello, Aubrey.
我状态很好。
I'm doing great.
你呢?
How are you?
我特别棒。
I am excellent.
今天能和你一起录节目真开心。
Excited to record with you today.
是的。
Yes.
我也是。
Me too.
今天我们聊点什么?
What are we talking about today?
奥布里,我有个问题,咱们先说一下。
Aubrey, I do have one question before we get into Okay.
说来听听。
Let's hear it.
你觉得一个人会不会热情过头?
Do you think that someone can be too enthusiastic?
我的意思是,你有没有过在某个时刻,发现自己热情得有点过了?
I mean, you ever realized that you were being too enthusiastic in a given moment?
有,最近我就遇到过一回,跟人聊我刚看的一部电影。
Yes, this happened to me recently where I was sharing with someone about a film I had watched.
叫《星际过客》。
It was Project Hail Mary.
我在播客里提过,我特别喜欢这部电影,结果跟嫂子聊的时候,说得有点停不下来。
I shared on the podcast how much I loved that movie and I was kind of gushing about it to my sister-in-law.
他们没看预告就去看了,结果根本不喜欢,因为他们根本不爱科幻片。
They went and saw it without watching a preview and they really didn't like it because they don't like sci fi at all.
而且他们压根儿都没去查过。
And they hadn't even looked to know.
这事儿可真有意思。
So it was really funny.
看来我确实有点太热情了。
So I was a little too enthusiastic.
我得明白,不是每部电影都适合所有人,哪怕我特别喜欢。
I have to realize not every movie is for everyone, even if I loved it.
别人可能就不喜欢。
Others might not.
对。
Right.
你得想想推荐对象是谁,再判断这部片子适不适合他们,对吧?
You have to kind of think about the person you're recommending it to and then decide, does this make sense for them, right?
是的,没错。
Yeah, exactly.
这其实特别有意思。
So this is really interesting.
我们要分享一个特别容易让对话冷场的做法,对吧?
We're going to share something that can really shut down conversations, right?
太过兴奋,热情过头了。
Being too excited, a little too enthusiastic.
接下来我们会告诉你,怎样做才能保持沟通的连贯性。
We're going to show you what to do instead to keep the connection.
对。
Yes.
这一集的内容来自我们全新的课程,奥布里。
And this episode is taking in pieces from our brand new course, Aubrey.
我们这里说的课程是哪一个?
Course is that that we're talking about here?
是的,这是我们的心动词汇课程。
Yes, this is our Active Vocabulary course.
这部分来自第六模块的第二课,题目叫《如何做出细腻的描述》。
This is from module six, lesson two, which is called How to Give Nuanced Descriptions.
我们只挑其中一小段来讲,比如太热情会怎样破坏交流,为什么会这样,以及该说什么来替代。
And we're just taking one small chunk of this, like how the connection is hurt when you're too enthusiastic and details about that and why and what you can say instead.
但就算只是这一课,内容也丰富得多。
But even that lesson is so much more robust.
这门课特别棒,能帮你把懂的词真正用在关键时刻。
This is an amazing course that really helps you take all of the words you know and be able to use them when it matters.
没错。
Yes.
正是如此。
Exactly.
我们非常高兴向大家推出这门全新的‘心动词汇’课程。
We're so excited to announce the availability of this brand new course called Active Vocabulary for you guys now.
这周特别优惠,现在购买很划算。
It is on sale for the special deal this week only.
我们很清楚,你其实已经掌握了很多词汇。
And the whole idea is we know that you know a lot of words.
对吧?
Right?
刚才奥布里说的就是这个意思。
What Aubrey just said.
你本身的词汇量已经很丰富了。
We know you have a a big vocabulary.
你不需要再学一大堆新词。
It's not that you need a ton of new words.
这门课里确实会教一些新词,但根本不需要大量新增。
You do get new words in this course, but you don't need a ton of new ones.
你真正需要的,是在关键时刻能用得出来。
What you need is to be able to use them in the moment.
对吧,奥布里?
Right, Aubrey?
没错。
Exactly.
我们提供的正是这些策略和表达方式,帮你掌握如何运用已学的词汇,让它们变成你随时能用的主动词汇,从而更自然地用英语交流。
And that is what we are giving you strategies and phrases, what you need to do and know in order to access the vocabulary you've learned, to make it part of your active vocabulary so you can use it to connect in English.
是的,你可以先去预览一下。
Yeah, so you can go and get a preview.
现在课程正在打折,赶紧去 allersenglish.com/vocabulary 看看,这周购买最多能省一百美元。
The course is actually on sale right now, so go on over to allersenglish.com/vocabulary and you will save up to $100 on the course this week only.
我们也会在节目最后再详细介绍一次。
And we'll give you more details at the end of the episode as well.
明白了吗?
Okay?
太好了。
Awesome.
那我们就开始吧。
So let's get into this.
我们先来聊聊为什么。
We're first kind of talking about why.
这个观点对你来说可能是新的。
This might be a new idea for you.
你可能没经历过我那样的情况,对吧?
Maybe you haven't had that experience I did, right?
为什么热情反而会毁掉对话。
Why enthusiasm can kill conversations.
问题的一部分在于,它让人无从提问,也没法继续讨论。
Part of the problem is that it leaves nothing to ask, Nothing to discuss.
如果我们表现得太过热情,别人可能就不敢表达不同意见,反而制造了尴尬。
We might accidentally create an awkward situation if we're so enthusiastic that no one feels like they can express a different opinion.
哦,确实如此。
Oh, yeah.
这种做法真的能很快让整个房间冷场,奥布里。
That can really shut down a room quickly, Aubrey.
没错。
Exactly.
你要是对某件事滔滔不绝,对吧?
This idea of if you're gushing about something, right?
就是那种滔滔不绝的状态。
If you're gushing.
‘滔滔不绝’这个词用得真好。
Is a good word.
这到底是什么意思呢?
What does this mean?
我来简单说一下。
Well, I'll talk about it for a second.
也就是说,当你毫无保留地表现出极大的热情,好像这股热情从你身上源源不断地涌出来一样。
So to express this exaggeration, kind of an unrestrained enthusiasm, the idea that this enthusiasm is just coming out of you.
它就往外涌。
It's gushing out.
是的,我特别兴奋的时候经常这样。
Yes, I do this a lot when I'm really enthusiastic.
我会对各种事情滔滔不绝,对吧?
I gush about things, right?
有时候挺可爱的,但有时候又过头了。
And sometimes it's endearing, but sometimes it's too much.
如果别人不同意,那就挺为难的。
If someone disagrees, they're in a tough position.
对吧?
Right?
所以你可能会说,我简直太喜欢了。
So you might say, I absolutely loved it.
一点意见都没有。
No notes.
这简直再完美不过了。
Or it seriously could not have been more impressive.
你这是在夸个不停啊。
You're gushing.
意思就是你热情得毫无保留。
That means your enthusiasm is unbridled.
这感觉挺奇怪的。
It's very strange.
毫无保留的热情。
Unbridled enthusiasm.
没错。
Exactly.
那有没有什么别的说法,能代替一上来就这么热情洋溢地表达呢?
So what are some phrases that maybe we could use instead of just coming in and showing all this enthusiasm?
咱们的回答可以稍微含蓄一点。
We could be a little bit more nuanced in our answers.
如果有人问我们电影怎么样,我们该怎么回答?
If someone asks us how a movie was or something, what could we say?
是的。
Yeah.
你可以说这部电影越看越有味道。
So you might say it grew on me.
对吧?
Right?
尤其是刚开始没觉得多好,后来却慢慢喜欢上了的时候。
And especially if you didn't really love it at first, but then started liking it later.
这句话特别适合用来表达某样东西越接触越喜欢。
This is a great phrase to say that something grew on you.
当然,如果你本来就特别喜欢,那就不大适合用这句话了。
And of course, if you really loved something, then you maybe not wouldn't say this.
我们后面还会提到几个更贴切的表达。
We'll have a few others that would be perfect for that.
但有些情况,当你担心推荐了之后别人会问‘你怎么会推荐这个’的时候,这句话特别合适。
But some things, this is ideal when you are worried that if you recommend it, someone's gonna be like, How did Aubrey recommend this?
对吧?
Right?
这时候你完全可以委婉一点。
You can really hedge here.
确实可以委婉一点。
Could really hedge here.
我们以前的课程里也聊过怎么委婉表达,另一个说法是‘这东西得慢慢品’。
We've talked about hedging in other courses that we have, but another thing we could say is it's a bit of an acquired taste.
这样回答就挺得体的。
So a nice balanced answer.
可能一开始你不太喜欢,但后来越看越觉得不错。
Maybe you didn't like it at first, but then eventually you liked it more.
明白吗?
Okay?
没错。
Exactly.
对。
Right.
说实话,我可有可无。
Or I could take it or leave it honestly.
这时候你其实是在表达自己犹豫不决,对吧?
And this is where you're really sharing like you're you're really being on the fence, right?
你并没有明确站队。
You're not really committing either way.
也许你想先看看别人对这件事的看法,再做决定。
Maybe you're waiting to see what someone else thought about something before you commit.
所以你可以这么说。
So this is something you could say.
之后在对话中,你可能会进一步表达自己的看法。
And then further in the conversation, maybe you share more of your opinion.
是的。
Yes.
或者说,这可能不适合所有人,但我挺喜欢的。
Or you could say it might not be for everyone, but I liked it.
我特别喜欢这些表达方式,奥布里,因为它们清楚地表明我们一直在考虑与人建立联系,想着对方的感受。
And the reason I love these phrases, Aubrey, is it makes it clear that we're constantly thinking about connection because we're thinking about the other person.
我们在想,也许他们并不会喜欢这个。
We're thinking about the fact that, oh, maybe they they won't like this.
对吧?
Right?
没错。
Exactly.
最后一个表达,其实特别适合我用在任何人身上,比如:这可能不是每个人都喜欢的。
This last one would have been perfect for me to use with my with anyone really be like, you know, this might not be for everyone.
你喜欢科幻吗?
Do you like sci fi?
对吧?
Right?
我很喜欢,但说不准。
I loved it, but I don't know.
所以,我们得考虑到别人可能不这么想。
So yeah, we have to consider that other people might disagree.
有些东西可能不合某人的口味,就像我们常说的那样。
Something might not be someone's cup of tea as we say.
没错。
Exactly.
好的。
Alright.
说得真好。
Good stuff.
你有没有觉得,自己说英语的时候,听起来比真实的自己更简单、更没意思,或者更缺乏表现力?
Do you ever feel like the English version of you sounds simpler, less interesting, or less expressive than who you really are?
这会不会让你在重要的时候错过了与人建立联系的机会?
Does this cause you to miss the chance to connect when it matters?
这跟你英语水平没关系,只是你的词汇还没真正用起来。
That's not because of your English level, it's because your vocabulary isn't active yet.
我们全新推出的课程《主动词汇》现在已经上线,随时等你加入。
Our brand new course, Active Vocabulary, is now live and ready for you.
你会学会用恰当的词语和更大的自信,把你的个性、观点、故事和幽默感带进英语对话里。

好的,奥布里。
Alright, Aubrey.
我们回来了。
We are back.
我们来做个角色扮演,具体演示一下这些更细腻的回答该怎么用。
Let's do a role play to show exactly how these these more nuanced answers could be used.
行吧?
Alright?
好的。
Alright.
我们是朋友,正在聊这里新开的一家餐厅。
We are friends talking about a new restaurant here.
你来开头吧?
Wanna start us out?
是的。
Yes.
嗨,奥布里。
Hey, Aubrey.
你去试过市中心那家新韩国餐厅了吗?
Have you tried that new Korean restaurant downtown yet?
去了。
Yeah.
上周末我和家人一起去的。
I went with my family last weekend.
那家店值不值这么多人夸啊?
Well, was it worth the hype or what?
我觉得值。
I think so.
一开始我还不确定,但后来一些小菜越吃越喜欢。
At first, I wasn't sure, but then some of the side dishes really grew on me.
哦,这倒说得通。
Oh, that makes sense.
我听说泡菜这东西得慢慢适应。
I've heard kimchi is a bit of an acquired taste.
我觉得确实如此。
I think that's true.
你平时吃饭挺敢尝试的。
You're usually pretty adventurous with food.
对吧?
Right?
我尽量吧。
Well, I try to be.
我要是去的话,该点啥?
If I go, what should I order?
一定要点烤肉。
Definitely the barbecue.
可能不是每个人都会喜欢,但我真的挺爱吃的。
It might not be for everyone, but I really liked it.
在桌上自己动手烤,整个体验特别有意思。
Cooking the food at the table made the whole experience really fun.
不错。
Nice.
好的。
Alright.
所以你是想说,你给我讲得更细了,整个事情其实挺讲究的,有些东西确实得慢慢适应。
So clearly, you know, you're I'm asking you and that you're getting you're giving me bit more nuance about the whole picture of yeah, maybe you know, things are an acquired taste.
我还不太确定,但总体来看,这个推荐挺靠谱的。
I'm not quite sure, but overall it's a good recommendation.
对。
Right.
你想想,我要是特别推荐,说这绝对是最好吃的,结果你去了却不喜欢,那多尴尬。
Imagine if I went hard with like, I love that it was the best you have to go and then you go and don't like it.
那我岂不是制造了个尴尬的局面?
Then I've created an awkward situation, right?
如果我用这些更细腻的表达方式,我们就能展开一场有意思的对话,不管你对这家餐厅感觉如何,都能坦率地告诉我真实想法。
If I, you know, use these more nuanced phrases instead, then we can have this interesting conversation and no matter what you feel about the restaurant, you'd be able to give me your honest take.
是的。
Yeah.
而且你也不想总是用那种热情洋溢的语气回应吧?
And also you don't want to be the person that's always answering with that enthusiasm, right?
因为别人听你对每件事都说同样的话,难免会觉得单调。
Because it can be a little boring for people to hear the same thing from you about everything.
你喜欢,这没什么不对的?
You liked it, there's no right?
我们想展现的是那种细腻感,那些灰色地带。
We want to show that nuance, that those shades of gray,
我觉得是这样。
I think.
或者听起来会显得不真诚。
Or it might seem insincere.
如果你总是这么热情,别人就很难相信你了。
If you're always so enthusiastic, then it isn't believable.
没错。
Right.
就是这样。
Exactly.
别用得太频繁。
Don't overuse it.
那我们平时会用哪些表达来体现这种细微差别呢?
So what are some phrases that we use to add nuance here?
是的,我之前说过,一开始我也不确定,但后来那些配菜越来越合我口味。
Yeah, so I had said, you know, I wasn't sure at first, but then the side dishes really grew on me.
所以我真的很喜欢。
So I love this.
我想象你去吃了。
I imagine you going.
也许你喜欢配菜,也许不喜欢。
Maybe you love the side dishes, maybe you don't.
不管怎样,你都可以坦率地说:这不合我口味,或者我特别喜欢——因为之前我没说得太激动,所以听起来就更真实。
Whatever it is, you'd be able to come and be like, that wasn't really for me or I loved it and because of what I said wasn't overly enthusiastic, it would work.
是的,就是这样。
Yes, exactly.
接下来我说的是,泡菜这种东西口味是需要慢慢适应的。
Or, the next one I said was it was a bit of an it's a kimchi is a bit of an acquired taste.
对吧?
Right?
所以你 neither 说它好,也不说它差。
So you're not saying it's great or it's terrible.
中间有太多可以表达的空间了。
There's so much in between that we can highlight.
对。
Right.
我们这儿还有空间可以聊聊,分享各自的看法。
There's room for us to discuss here and share our opinion.
不管我是真的很讨厌泡菜,还是特别喜欢,听了你刚才那些说法,我都会觉得坦率表达没问题。
If I really don't like kimchi or if I love it, I would still feel comfortable sharing that with you after the phrases you're using.
没错。
Exactly.
那还有呢,奥布里?
And then what else, Aubrey?
你最后说了什么?
What did you say at the end?
我说了,可能不是每个人都喜欢,但我挺喜欢的。
I said it might not be for everyone, but I liked it.
因为确实,这挺有意思的。
Because right, this is really interesting.
不是每个人都会喜欢在餐厅里自己烤食物,所以我这话说得有点保守,对吧?
Not everyone's going to want to cook their own food on the grill at a restaurant, so I'm sort of again hedging here, right?
我是说,我真的很喜欢,但可能不是每个人都适合。
I'm like I really liked it, but it might not be for everyone.
没错,确实很棒。
Yes, really good stuff.
那么,Aubrey,说到词汇量,这背后到底是什么意思呢?
So clearly, I mean, what is this about Aubrey when it comes to vocabulary?
我们再来梳理一下。
Let's just kind of reiterate here.
你觉得最大的挑战是什么?
What do you see as the biggest challenge?
对。
Yeah.
这其实挺有意思的,因为如果你的词汇库里只有‘我超爱’这种毫无保留的赞美之词。
This is really interesting because if all you have in your vocabulary arsenal is unbridled enthusiasm to say like, I loved it.
太棒了。
It was amazing.
这样的话就缺乏细腻感,没法展开对话,也没给其他人留出表达意见的空间。
There's no nuance there to create a conversation, to give other people the space and freedom to share their opinions.
所以你需要掌握各种不同的表达方式,要懂得这些说法别人听了会怎么反应。
So you need all these different phrases, nuanced phrases, and you need to understand how they'll be received.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
但要想真正用上这些表达,你还得学会灵活切换,适时运用。
And then in order, though, to really have those phrases, we need to be able to pivot into using them.
这些表达你们可能已经知道一些了,但关键时候,你们真能自然地用出来吗?
So you may know some of these phrases already, guys, but can you actually use them in a conversation when it really matters?
今天希望大家好好问问自己这个问题,这也是我们推出‘主动词汇’想帮你们解决的核心难题。
That's the question we want you to ask yourself today, and that is the problem that we're seeking to solve for you in Active Vocabulary.
对吧,奥布里?

没错。
Exactly.
