Michelle, how are you today?

Speaker 1

I'm good.

Speaker 1

I'm good.

Speaker 1

How are you, Lindsey?

Speaker 0

Awesome.

Speaker 0

So excited to be here.

Speaker 0

And, Michelle, today we are here for our listeners to talk about, you know, how can we start conversations with native English speakers?

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So that is the million dollar question.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

I mean, we wanna start to think about how, you know, I think we spend a lot of time, like, thinking about how to seek people out, how to look for people, and how to find people, but how can you bring native English speakers to you?

Speaker 1

Is that's a different way of thinking about this.

Speaker 0

That's so true, Michelle.

Speaker 0

I love it.

Speaker 1

So it's it's like the pull factor.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

What is it that you can do about your self presentation that actually makes people come up to you and wanna talk to you?

Speaker 0

And I love this idea because it's not just for learning English, it's for anything.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

It doesn't mean we have to be crazy flashy.

Speaker 0

We do have some ideas though to be crazy, but it could be as subtle as what color you're wearing on your shirt.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Uh-huh.

Speaker 0

Now alright.

Speaker 0

Let's start with the crazy though, Michelle.

Speaker 0

So the off the wall factor.

Speaker 0

What does that mean off the wall for a listener?

Speaker 1

Off the wall is, like, unique, totally different.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Totally different, sometimes shocking.

Speaker 0

First thing I think about, Michelle, when I think about this, and I've mentioned this on the podcast before, is that guy I don't know if he still lives in New York, but when I lived in New York in the February, he would walk around with a cat on his head around Union Square downtown.

Speaker 1

Oh my god.

Speaker 0

But that's just New York.

Speaker 0

Like, there's a lot of crazy people in New York.

Speaker 0

A lot of crazy things are being done.

Speaker 0

But guaranteed, he had people stopping him.

Speaker 0

He wanted that.

Speaker 0

It was clear that he wanted that.

Speaker 0

Do you have any other examples of things you've seen, Michelle, where people just are drawing attention based on doing something crazy?

Speaker 1

Oh, man.

Speaker 1

I know that there are things.

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 1

I feel like I don't know.

Speaker 1

Sometimes people just wear things that are like, it could be, like, a statement necklace or, like, big pieces of jewelry or something like that that kinda just, like, make people, like, look at them and find them interesting.

Speaker 1

I can't think of something specifically.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But I don't know.

Speaker 1

I think that there was a girl in high school, and she always just had this very interesting fashion, and she was very engaging and interesting.

Speaker 1

And, like, I still remember her to this day.

Speaker 1

So sometimes it it even if you're not, like, a fashion person, that's okay.

Speaker 1

But sometimes, I don't know, play play with things a little bit.

Speaker 1

You might because I think I think native English speaker I I think we're known for giving compliments.

Speaker 1

We like to say, oh, I like this.

Speaker 1

I like that.

Speaker 1

So, like Yeah.

Speaker 1

Wear something that'll kinda draw that out of people.

Speaker 0

Because we know we're humans.

Speaker 0

We want to connect.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

All Ears English

That's what the whole All Ears English is based on is connection, not perfection.

Speaker 0

We wanna connect.

Speaker 0

So if I see someone you know, another example could be your hair color.

Speaker 0

Maybe you decide to dye your hair an interesting color.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Or your nails.

Speaker 0

Maybe you paint your nails like a blue or or some other color that it just stands out in someone, especially probably a woman is gonna come up and comment on that.

Speaker 0

Or I I I think of tattoos when I think of this.

Speaker 0

You know, there's a whole culture of tattoos in The US, and they're definitely accepted.

Speaker 0

I would be discerning about where they are, of course, if you're in the business world.

Speaker 0

But, you know, when it comes to tattoos, you know, people will reach out to you and say, love your tattoo.

Speaker 0

What is this?

Speaker 0

That's a conversation starter.

Speaker 0

Right, Michelle?

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

没错。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So you this is just about, you know, the idea of thinking, is there anything physically I could do to get people to, you know, maybe give me a compliment, maybe start a conversation, maybe wear a shirt with like, you know, a city on it or Yeah.

Speaker 1

You know, like like for me, so I went to I went to University of Maryland.

Speaker 1

Whenever I see somebody wearing a University of Maryland t shirt, I'm like, always go go Terps.

Speaker 1

I'm like

Speaker 0

Well, that's a good point.

Speaker 0

So that and that leads to another Right?

Speaker 0

Just starting the conversation, but feeling that sense of tribe.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

That's your tribe.

Speaker 0

That person went to your school.

Speaker 1

Connection your sports team.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Or even just yesterday on Friday, I was on a Skype meeting with another entrepreneur that we get together and we share ideas.

Speaker 0

And we realized halfway through the meeting that we were wearing the same t shirt.

Speaker 0

The exact same t shirt.

Speaker 0

What?

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And it was actually a podcasting t shirt.

Speaker 0

We had both been to a podcasting conference, and it was a t shirt for a brand, for a company.

Speaker 1

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

And we were like, oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

And then we felt connected.

Speaker 0

So it's a way to connect.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That is that is great.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So, guys, these are just different things to think about.

Speaker 1

I mean Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Different ways that you can draw those people to you that might get them to say, oh, like, like, let's say, like, okay, for example, you know, Lindsay, I I mean, and you do too.

Speaker 1

I love Tokyo.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 1

We do.

Speaker 1

So if somebody was wearing, like, a shirt from Tokyo or somebody or or any other place that I've traveled, it don't have to be Japan, but any place that I've traveled to Yeah.

Speaker 1

I would probably be like, oh, I've been there, like, I loved it, you know?

Speaker 1

Like, I would get excited.

Speaker 1

For sure.

Speaker 1

So, yeah, I think that that can be kind of a fun thing, like maybe of your favorite place.

Speaker 1

It doesn't have to be the place that you're from, you could wear a shirt, you know, that's just another place that you really like.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

It shows you traveled there.

Speaker 1

Or maybe maybe, like another thing could be like shirt from a concert you went to.

Speaker 1

That can kinda connect with music.

Speaker 1

So so many different things.

Speaker 0

Music taste?

Speaker 0

Absolutely.

Speaker 0

And then I'm thinking if you're gutsy enough right?

Speaker 0

What does what does gutsy mean, Like, outgoing.

Speaker 0

Brave, you know, a T shirt with a political slogan.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Especially around the time of the election, I had a T shirt that, like, very much signaled my political orientation.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And then I did get, like, nods from certain people.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

People that recognize that, like, we had a connection.

Speaker 0

So and then the last thing I wanna mention is just colors.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

The color of your what you're wearing, like your t shirt, that can also do a lot.

Speaker 0

Like, the other day at a conference, I was wearing a bright gold yellow, which, obviously, I love that color.

Speaker 0

It's the color of All Ears English, and I just love that shirt.

Speaker 0

And I got quite a few comments and compliments on the shirt.

Speaker 0

You just stand out.

Speaker 0

So in a group, people looked at me like I stood out in the group because of that bright color.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That's good.

Speaker 1

That's a good point, Lindsay.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Thinking about the colors as well.

Speaker 1

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

So much.

Speaker 1

There's so much.

Speaker 1

So much that you can do.

Speaker 1

Just have fun with it, guys.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Bring about connection.

Speaker 1

Lindsay, this was fun.
