We believe in connection, not perfection when it comes to learning English.

Speaker 1

Now here are your hosts, Lindsey McMahon, the English adventurer, and Michelle Kaplan, the New York radio girl coming to you from Boston and New York City, USA.

Speaker 1

In this episode, learn how Aubrey set a goal to play more volleyball, and then find out how you can look back at your twenty thirteen goals to reverse engineer your success.

Speaker 1

Hey, Aubrey.

Speaker 1

How's everything today?

Speaker 0

I am great.

Speaker 0

I was able to go play volleyball last night, and that always makes my day.

Speaker 0

So I woke up feeling really happy today.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I heard you're a volleyball player.

Speaker 1

That's so cool.

Speaker 1

You managed to get a lot into your schedule.

Speaker 0

I do.

Speaker 0

I have to be kind of wise with my time, but I do.

Speaker 0

It was late.

Speaker 0

I played from, like, eight to 10PM because, you know, before that, I'm getting kids to bed.

Speaker 0

And so sometimes you have to sneak in the exercise where you can fit it in.

Speaker 1

But good for you.

Speaker 1

That is awesome.

Speaker 1

And and I'm glad we're talking about exercise a little bit today.

Speaker 1

This week, of course, we're coming to the end of 2013, guys, and we're talking a lot about looking at the new year, what we wanna do in 2014.

Speaker 1

It's gonna be a great year.

Speaker 1

And what are the goals that we wanna set?

Speaker 1

But have you ever heard of the concept, Aubrey, of kinda reverse engineering success?

Speaker 0

Yes.

Speaker 0

And I think this is so wise when you're more looking back, right, on what you've done.

Speaker 0

Was it a good goal?

Speaker 0

How could I adjust it going forward?

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

And the way we learn about what works is based on what's worked in the past.

Speaker 1

Think that's how it works.

Speaker 1

So maybe let's put this into a little bit of context.

Speaker 1

So when we're gonna reverse engineer our success, when it comes to setting goals, let's look back at last year and let's use an example for you, Aubrey, of exercising.

Speaker 1

Alright?

Speaker 1

How does that sound for us?

Speaker 0

For sure.

Speaker 0

So I can share, I made a goal last year.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

I wanted to, exercise more, but I was going to be more aware of making it fun.

Speaker 0

Because if I'm like, I'm gonna go to the gym.

Speaker 0

I hate going to the gym.

Speaker 0

I don't end up doing it.

Speaker 0

So I was recognizing in myself a need to make it enjoyable and more fun, or I wasn't going to do it.

Speaker 0

So I I love volleyball and I just prioritized more.

Speaker 0

I joined a league.

Speaker 0

I got together with some more friends and was more proactive about creating opportunities to play that and having it scheduled so that, you know, I'm not going to let people down because with volleyball you need a certain amount of people to play.

Speaker 0

And that has really pushed me to do it more, to be more active.

Speaker 0

And I have I've exercised more this year than probably ever in the past because I'm actually proactively doing something I enjoy.

Speaker 1

That's fantastic.

Speaker 1

So so when we think about the first step here, right, what we tell our listeners to do is we think back and we say, what were your goals?

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

And and for you guys, it would be English for our listeners, something or life.

Speaker 1

We talk about life on this show a lot too.

Speaker 1

But for you, Aubrey, you said maybe I'm gonna say I'm guessing maybe you said you want 90% of your exercise to come from volleyball.

Speaker 1

Does that sound about right?

Speaker 0

Oh, and I like that you're putting a number to it because I don't always do that and I think it's so wise, right?

Speaker 0

I might just say like I wanna exercise more.

Speaker 0

But if I'm saying instead I want to exercise every day for at least an hour Yes.

Speaker 0

And to put a a a percentage on how much of it should be volleyball in order to be fun for me.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Definitely, I could say I want 90% of it to be volleyball.

Speaker 0

And I didn't do that, and I think that would have actually helped even more to make it more measurable.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And just a side question, is this sand volleyball?

Speaker 1

Like, beach no.

Speaker 1

Not beach volleyball.

Speaker 1

We're in Arizona here.

Speaker 1

So right?

Speaker 0

Oh, I play

Speaker 1

很多

a lot

Speaker 0

of sand But, yeah, we don't call it beach volleyball in Arizona because there's no beach, but we do play a lot of sand ball.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

But also indoor.

Speaker 0

I I play a lot of indoor, especially if it's hot out.

Speaker 0

But here in December, it's really nice in Arizona, so we play a lot of sand volleyball.

Speaker 1

And which is the better workout, by the way?

Speaker 1

Is it more Definitely sand.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Sand because the with the unlevel ground and you have to, like, put so much more energy into jumping to get up and hit, and it's so much harder to get to the ball.

Speaker 0

So there's definitely I'm definitely more sore, more I can feel a harder workout when I'm playing sand volleyball.

Speaker 1

I love that.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

So we've got so we know what you set as a goal.

Speaker 1

You wanted most of your exercise to come from volleyball.

Speaker 1

So tell us again, what did you actually do?

Speaker 1

Like, what actions did you take towards those goals?

Speaker 0

Just real quick.

Speaker 1

Kind of.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I joined a league.

Speaker 0

So that was big because it's not cheap.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

You have to spend a certain amount of money.

Speaker 0

And, you're playing with, so we were playing fours.

Speaker 0

Often, would play twos for Sam Blibel, but we were playing fours.

Speaker 0

It was a team where you can't let them down.

Speaker 0

You have to find a sub if you can't play.

Speaker 0

So I was prioritizing it and planning around it to make sure and go.

Speaker 0

And it was a league that's in the evening, so it was a little easier for me to go even though I have kids.

Speaker 0

And I also made friends and contacted some friends that I knew that played volleyball and planned times to play with them as well.

Speaker 0

So I knew that I was scheduling it.

Speaker 0

It's a hard sport to just say, like, who wants to play volleyball out of the blue?

Speaker 0

You have to plan ahead.

Speaker 0

You have to schedule it.

Speaker 0

And, and it's been so fun.

Speaker 0

I've been able to make a lot of really close friendships while getting a good workout.

Speaker 1

That's awesome.

Speaker 1

I love that.

Speaker 1

And so you've told us what actions and, guys, you're gonna do this with your English goal.

Speaker 1

You're gonna tell us what actions you ended up taking towards those goals.

Speaker 1

And then the final question is, do you feel like you achieved your goal, Aubrey?

Speaker 1

Did you achieve your goal?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Definitely.

Speaker 0

I played weekly, sometimes, twice a week.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And I exercised more this past year than I think ever in the past.

Speaker 0

Because when my goals were more general, like I need to exercise, I'd go run a couple times, maybe join a gym but never go.

Speaker 0

And so this was much more effective for me to think about when I'm thinking about my goal, how can I stay motivated?

Speaker 0

How can I stay engaged?

Speaker 0

I need to make sure it's enjoyable, so I'll stick to it.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I love this.

Speaker 1

And so now we can think back and we can reverse engineer what were the elements that were there for success.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

And then you can apply that new those insights the next goal.

Speaker 1

I mean, it seems like one thing I'm hearing is that you had friends involved.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And that is huge.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

If especially well, for volleyball, it's a social sport.

Speaker 0

You cannot play volleyball on your own, and it's the same with learning a language.

Speaker 0

You guys are trying to learn English just by yourself and never involving anyone else.

Speaker 0

It is hard to stay engaged and motivating motivated, at least with this podcast.

Speaker 0

We're here with you, right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

With us three together, at least.

Speaker 0

But you should be finding people to speak with, right?

Speaker 0

Listening in other contexts and chatting.

Speaker 0

Find people online or in the city where you live through, like, meetup groups so that you can make friends, engage with other people learning English.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

And I think another piece of your plan here was knowing yourself, and you knew that the gym was just not working for you.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

You just it's just not your thing.

Speaker 1

Dark, dingy gyms just not doesn't isn't compatible with who you are.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

所以

So

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

You made another plan.

Speaker 1

So these are all elements of success.

Speaker 1

So we want you guys to look back, see what goals you were successful at, and then reverse engineer what why did those things work.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Or not work.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

If you have a goal that you it didn't work, you didn't do it.

Speaker 0

Why?

Speaker 0

Think about when you set it, did you make it measurable?

Speaker 0

I definitely could have done that better, right?

Speaker 0

Did you decide how long, how many days a week, what exactly are you going to do?

Speaker 0

Have that really clear in your mind.

Speaker 0

Otherwise, it's hard to make it work.

Speaker 1

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

So I didn't realize when you said volleyball, I was envisioning a team of, like, eight people.

Speaker 1

So I was thinking, like, there's not a ton of movement there, but you're talking two on two or four on four.

Speaker 1

That's that seems like an incredible workout.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And surprisingly, if you if you play volleyball with six on a team indoor, at at the level that, you know, I'm playing volleyball, it is you're breathing hard.

Speaker 0

It's a really hard workout because you're playing positions.

Speaker 0

So you're running all over.

Speaker 0

You're jumping and blocking.

Speaker 0

You're jumping and hitting.

Speaker 0

You're running and diving to get right?

Speaker 0

So it's not what you're imagining maybe with, like, a family reunion, recreation volleyball where you're just dumping it over.

Speaker 0

你得

You got

Speaker 1

a a drink in your hand.

Speaker 0

Feels a little like maybe I shouldn't be saying this, but it's what you see when you see, indoor volleyball on the Olympics Olympics where it's very high energy and active.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's it's closer to that than to family reunion volleyball.

Speaker 0

Not that I'm an Olympian, but it's more at that level and fun.

Speaker 0

It's it's really fun when you get to that level.

Speaker 1

Well, I definitely don't wanna be on the other side of the net when you come up and spike it down up.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

I'm gonna stay away from that for sure.

Speaker 0

That's the safest place to be, Lindsay, is right on the net jumping and blocking.

Speaker 0

And the worst is someone will sometimes stand, like, four or five feet back.

Speaker 0

That's when you're gonna get a ball right in the face.

Speaker 1

That would be me.

Speaker 1

That would be me.

Speaker 1

Has anyone, like, broken a nose or anything?

Speaker 0

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

I've seen people break fingers when they're blocking, break a nose if you take one to the face.

Speaker 0

My husband actually has a concussion as we speak for taking a volleyball to the head when we're playing sand volleyball.

Speaker 1

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

Alright.

Speaker 1

I know what sport I'm not gonna play now.

Speaker 1

Good to know.

Speaker 0

It can be a little violent, a little unsafe.

Speaker 1

Oh, that's so funny.

Speaker 1

I love it.

Speaker 1

So, guys, this is how it's done.

Speaker 1

We've just analyzed the goal that Aubrey sent us, set up for 2013 and what you know, how she became successful.

Speaker 1

So we want you to do this, look back at your year, and then think, okay.

Speaker 1

What's my goal for 2014, and how am I gonna get there?

Speaker 1

Love it.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Awesome.

Speaker 0

This is great.

Speaker 0
