今天过得怎么样,米歇尔?
How are you doing today, Michelle?
纽约的生活怎么样?
How is life in New York City?
我挺好的。
I am good.
我很好。
I'm good.
今天天气真好,我早上得出门一趟,就散了个步,感觉特别舒服。
It's actually a beautiful day today, so I enjoyed I I was able to I had to go somewhere this morning, so I took a walk, and it was it was it was nice.
那你呢?
So how are you?
是啊。
That's
真棒。
awesome.
我很好。
I'm good.
我很好。
I'm good.
这里科罗拉多州的丹佛天气也很美。
It's beautiful here in Denver, Colorado as well.
状态不错。
Feeling good.
状态不错。
Feeling good.
米歇尔,上一期我们聊了聊在美国上大学值不值这个价的问题。
So, Michelle, the episode last time, we were talking a little bit about asking the question, is college worth the price in The US?
对吧?
Right?
学费简直高得离谱。
Mean, prices are crazy high.
但今天,我们聊这个话题的时候,我觉得这正是我们的听众在英语对话里,跟朋友或母语者会聊到的内容。
But today, you know, when we talk about this topic, I feel like this is something we might talk about, Our listeners might talk about in English with friends or native speakers.
你觉得呢?
What do you think?
是的,确实如此。
Oh, yeah.
这是个特别普遍的话题。
It's a very, very common topic.
我觉得很多人心里都有很多想法,也想了解不少东西。
I think a lot of people have many opinions to share, a lot of things that they wanna learn.
所以,这话题肯定经常会出现。
And so, yeah, this is something that comes up for sure.
这话题确实经常被提到。
This definitely comes up.
所以,各位,这期节目我们会教你们四个实用表达,让你们也能自己参与讨论。毕竟,All Ears English 的核心是交流,而不是完美。
So, guys, in this episode, we're gonna give you four solid phrases that you need to have this discussion yourself because the whole point of All Ears English is connection, not perfection.
我们希望你们能掌握这些表达,出去和母语为英语的人交流,或者任何说英语的人。
We want you to be able to take these tools and go out and connect with a native speaker in English or anyone in English.
对吧,米歇尔?
Right, Michelle?
没错。
Exactly.
正是如此。
Exactly.
这个观点很好,林赛。
Very good point, Lindsay.
所以,这些词或表达方式,你们在这些对话中都可以用上。
So, yeah, these are words or expressions that you can use in these conversations.
对。
Mhmm.
非常实用。
So very, very useful.
我们开始第一个吧?
Should we get into the first one?
好啊。
Yeah.
那就来吧。
Let's go for it.
第一个是什么,Michelle?
What is that first one, Michelle?
第一个是个形容词。
The first one, it's an adjective.
是‘prohibitive’。
It's prohibitive.
哦,我特别喜欢这个词。
Oh, I love that one.
Prohibitive。
Prohibitive.
念起来还挺有意思的。
It's kinda fun to say.
Prohibitive。
Prohibitive.
是的。
Yeah.
念起来很顺口。
It kinda rolls off your tongue.
意思是贵得让人买不起。
And this means something that is just too expensive to be able to purchase.
我以前住在纽约的时候,就觉得那儿很多东西都贵得离谱。
I mean, when I was living in New York, I did feel like a lot of things in New York City were prohibitive.
你觉得呢,Michelle?
What do you think, Michelle?
对。
Yeah.
我觉得这座城市出名就是因为东西太贵了。
It's a I think it's a famous city for its prohibitiveness.
不过你知道哪个城市才是真正贵得离谱的吗?
Although, you know what you know what city is really prohibited?
是东京。
It's Tokyo.
你去过日本吧。
I mean, you visited Japan.
你和丹一起去日本旅行过,对吧?
You and you and Dan took a trip to Japan.
是吧?
Right?
我去过。
I have been there.
对。
Yes.
那里确实挺贵的。
It was it was it was expensive there for sure.
是的。
Yeah.
我真的觉得那里的开销高得吓人。
I really felt like it was prohibitive.
不过话说回来,这些城市都是世界级的,不管怎样都值得去一趟。
But, anyways, these cities are just world class cities, and you gotta go anyways.
那这跟教育有什么关系呢?
So how does this fit into education?
我举个例子啊。
Here's an example, guys.
记下来。
Write this down.
美国的教育成本已经高得离谱了,我某种程度上也同意这个说法。
The cost of education in The US has become prohibitive, and I kind of agree with that.
我觉得二十年后,孩子们根本负担不起上大学的费用。
I think twenty years from now, I just don't think kids are gonna be able to afford to go to college.
价格涨得这么快,真有点让人担心。
It's a little bit scary how quickly the prices move up.
我明白。
I know.
你能想到还有哪个行业的价格涨得这么快吗?
Can you think of any other industry where the prices move up that fast?
肯定有,但我感觉教育行业排在最前面。
Oh, there's gotta be something, but I feel like education is
对。
Yeah.
绝对是名列前茅的。
Very, very high on the list.
你怎么看?
What do you think?
这简直太离谱了。
It's kinda crazy.
所以根本就负担不起。
So it's completely prohibitive.
在进入下一个话题之前,米歇尔,咱们提醒一下听众,他们一定要做对一件事,这样才能不错过《All Ears English》的任何一期。
And guys, before we move to the next word, Michelle, let's remind our listeners what they should make sure they do so they never miss an episode of All Ears English.

Make sure you follow All Ears English.
好的,Michelle。
Okay, Michelle.
下一个词是 to be worth it。
So the next one is to be worth it.
对。
Yes.
给我举个例子吧。
So give me an example.
比如说,这个词到底是什么意思?
Like, what does this mean?
意思是,如果某件事值得,那它的回报就配得上你付出的成本。
Well, it it basically means if if something is worth it, it means the reward justifies the cost of doing something.
那我来举个例子。
So let let me give an example.
对。
Mhmm.
吃那块巧克力蛋糕值得吗?
Is it worth it to eat that piece of chocolate cake?
通常来说,值得。
Usually, is.
我的答案一直都是肯定的。
It it my answer is always yes.
但说实话,你可以用在很多地方,比如说,上大学值得吗?
But, like, I mean or I mean, there's a lot of things you can use, but you could say, is college worth it?
或者买书值不值?买纸质版还是直接用电子版?
Or was is it worth it to buy the book or to buy the paper copy, or should I use an online copy?
类似这样的问题。
Something like that.
对,没错。
Like Yes.
你投入在某件事上的精力或金钱,并不总是值得的。
The amount of effort you put into something or about money you put into something isn't justified.
是的。
Yeah.
这是个很好的例子。
That's a good example.
再举个例子,你们正在用英语讨论上大学的花费,也可以聊聊住校和住校外的区别。
Or just another example, as you guys are having this conversation in English about the cost of college, you might talk about living on campus versus living off campus.
那住校值得吗?
So is it worth it to live on campus?
当然值得。
Yes.
对吧?
Right?
食堂的饭贵得离谱,味道还一般。
The price is so high eating in the the dining hall where the food is usually not that good.
那这么贵,值不值呢?
So is it worth that?
没错。
Exactly.
所以,下一个是有优势的。
So, yeah, the next one is advantageous.
这又是一个形容词。
This is another adjective.
它能让你比别人更有优势。
So this is something that puts you ahead of others.
也就是说,能给你额外的帮助。
So it gives you extra help.
比如,上大学有优势,学一门语言也有优势。
So for example, going to college can be advantageous, or learning a language is advantageous.
朋友们,这些词都是
Guys, these are
很厉害的表达。
impressive words.
我得说,如果你正在准备雅思考试,或者跟母语者聊天时,一开口就用上‘prohibitive’、‘advantageous’这种词,立马就显得特别专业,能让你跟对方更好地交流。
I have to say if you're taking the IELTS exam or if you are just talking to a native speaker and you start throwing around words like prohibitive and advantageous, it just is really advanced, and this will help you connect with that speaker.
明白吗?
Okay?
太棒了。
So good.
接下来咱们来个有趣的。
And now we have a fun one.
我们再学一个习语,米歇尔。
We have a another idiom, Michelle.
对。
Yes.
这是什么意思?
What is it?
意思是到处奔波找工作。
It's to pound the pavement.
就是说,
So
这个说法,
this
这是一个习语,意思是努力奋斗去实现目标。
is an idiom, and it means to work hard to reach your goals.
我想象中,就是像在纽约城里到处走,脚步沉重地一家家上门求职。
I mean, I think literally about, like, going around New York City just, like, you know, walking with, like, very heavy footsteps.
我一听到就想到这个画面。
That's just what I think of.
没错。
Totally.
但说到底,就是得努力干活。
But, yeah, it's just working hard.
对吧?
Right?
比如说,想在人生中得到你想要的东西,就得脚踏实地去打拼。
So for example, to get what you want in life, you need to pound the pavement.
是的。
Yeah.
我能想象这在大学校园里也是这样。
And I could imagine this on a college campus.
你可能得参加各种各样的社团。
Maybe you need to join all these different clubs.
你可能还得当上商业社团的主席。
Maybe you need to be the president of the business club.
对吧?
Right?
所以在大学里,这个说法字面上就是在校内来回奔波。
So that's the literal example in the in the university world to pound the pavement up and down campus.
不过,米歇尔,你和我对这个成语的理解是一样的。
But, Michelle, you and I have the same picture of this idiom.
每当我想到这个成语,就会想起2006年在纽约找公寓的经历。
When I think of this idiom, I think of trying to find my apartment in New York in 2006.
我和室友当时真的在曼哈顿上下到处跑,因为那时候用Craigslist,一有房源上线,就在上城、下城之间赶过去。
I my roommate and I, we were just literally running up and down midtown, downtown, uptown because, you know, on using Craigslist at that time, something became available uptown.
我们一听说有房,就立刻冲过去,签合同的时候只有五分钟时间,根本没空多想。
So we run uptown and downtown, and then finally you sign, and you have to sign in, like, five minutes.
根本来不及犹豫。
You can't think about it.
那真是疯狂极了。
It was crazy.
是啊,我懂。
It was I know.
你真得赶紧行动起来,这事儿拖不得。
You really gotta get moving quickly that stuff.
得赶紧动起来。
You gotta move.
得赶紧动起来。
You gotta move.
这就是纽约的生活体验。
So that's the New York experience.
而且,朋友们,这些经历完全适用于纽约的生活、美国的生活,当然也包括大学生活。
And, guys, these completely apply to life in New York, life in The US, or, of course, talking about college.
对吧?
Right?
在美国上大学的体验。
The experience of being in college in The US.
太棒了。
So good.
太棒了。
So good.
不错。
Good.
天哪。
Oh my gosh.
林赛,这真有意思。
Lindsey, this was fun.
很高兴我们聊了这个。
I'm glad we talked about this.
没错。
Yes.
