Speaker 1

Speaker 0

Hey, Michelle.

Speaker 0

Happy to be on the microphone with you for our listeners today.

Speaker 0

I'm doing great.

Speaker 0

I'm doing great.

Speaker 0

How was your weekend?

Speaker 1

Oh, it was nice.

Speaker 1

It was nice.

Speaker 1

I got to be outside a little bit, so that was good.

Speaker 0

How about you?

Speaker 0

Wonderful.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I hiked a crazy high mountain over the weekend.

Speaker 1

Oh, and actually always outdo Maylent.

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

But actually, have a story.

Speaker 0

Real quick, real quick story.

Speaker 0

We actually found a stray dog over the weekend.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It was really dramatic.

Speaker 0

So he followed us.

Speaker 0

We were scooting around Denver, and we found him on the lawn, and he tried following us.

Speaker 0

He almost followed us into the street.

Speaker 0

So we tried to find his owner, couldn't find his owner, took him to the vet, scanned his chip, because dogs now have a chip, which like links them back to the owner.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Uh-huh.

Speaker 0

Scanned his chip, couldn't no, he wasn't registered.

Speaker 0

Oh, wow.

Speaker 0

So we took him to our house, but he didn't get along with our dog.

Speaker 0

So we had to take him to the shelter.

Speaker 0

But luckily, we were posting on Nextdoor, which is like our neighborhood forum, and we got connected with the owner.

Speaker 0

So the Oh, owner that the next morning could go and pick the dog up.

Speaker 1

Oh, Oh, wow.

Speaker 1

That's that's quite a story.

Speaker 0

It was quite a day.

Speaker 0

I mean, hiking a fourteener, 14,000 foot mountain, and then, you know, finding a dog, it was a big day.

Speaker 1

So I'm so pumped for 18,000.

Speaker 0

Almost like Everest or

Speaker 1

something.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I yeah, Lindsay.

Speaker 1

I I'm just gonna start making up stuff so I can compete with it.

Speaker 0

所以。

So

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

Well, wow.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

Well, that dog was lucky to find you.

Speaker 1

So Very lucky.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

But, anyways, we're not talking about dogs or hiking We're being outside.

Speaker 1

We're talking about TV.

Speaker 0

TV, which offers a whole range of other adventures.

Speaker 0

Right, Michelle?

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

I mean, Lindsay, I I think that a lot of a lot of people when they're learning a new language, they kinda turn to the TV.

Speaker 1

And I wanna talk about this today.

Speaker 1

Like, is it a good idea?

Speaker 1

Like, what's what are some of the benefits with learning English using the TV?

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 1

What do you think?

Speaker 0

Well, you know, Michelle, I think what it comes down to and we we do a lot of IELTS.

Speaker 0

If you guys go find the IELTS energy podcast, we do a lot of IELTS preparation as well.

Speaker 0

We find that when students have a lot of material in their mind, they have stories, they have jokes, they have current events, they have sitcoms that they've seen, funny situations, they have a lot to say, and they become more confident.

Speaker 0

Michelle,

Have you seen that, Michelle, with your students?

Speaker 1

有的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

I I I think so because you just wanna constantly be building up, like, your bank of material to be able to talk to people about something.

Speaker 1

So, like, for example, I always whenever like, I've had it where I've come into a classroom.

Speaker 1

Oh, what did you do over the weekend?

Speaker 1

Oh, nothing.

Speaker 1

Really?

Speaker 1

You did nothing.

Speaker 1

Oh, I just stayed inside.

Speaker 1

I just you did nothing inside.

Speaker 1

Oh, I watch TV.

Speaker 0

And Oh.

Speaker 0

Then

Speaker 1

you kinda like a lot of people spend their weekends that way, and that's fine.

Speaker 1

So maybe instead of saying nothing, you wanna always try and actually put something forward.

Speaker 1

Maybe that person watches the TV show.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

I spent the whole weekend watching friends.

Speaker 1

I spent the whole week, you know, and that's fine.

Speaker 1

So, like, it just gives you more things to talk about.

Speaker 1

It gives you more things to learn because there are tons of references in TV shows, so it's all good.

Speaker 0

Exactly, Michelle.

Speaker 0

And, you know, on this show, again, what we believe in is connection not perfection.

Speaker 0

And nothing kills connection faster than when someone inquires about your weekend and you said you did nothing.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

Right.

Speaker 0

It just stops the connection right away.

Speaker 0

哦,

Oh,

Speaker 1

是的。

yeah.

Speaker 1

You gotta say something.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Makes it makes it seem like you're closed off, like you don't wanna connect, but we know you guys want to connect.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 0

So we're gonna start today by throwing out some news channels where you can get the news.

Speaker 0

There's a lot going on in the news right now, and we want you guys to be informed so that this material will help you start conversations, and then we'll give you some TV sitcoms that you should be watching.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 1

Love it.

Speaker 1

Love it.

Speaker 1

Well, some places to start.

Speaker 1

首先是BBC。

So there's the BBC.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

And NPR is another good one.

Speaker 1

And NPR also has a lot of I know they have transcripts.

Speaker 1

Well, this is this is for listening.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I mean, so you could I guess well, NPR is more of a listening channel.

Speaker 0

It's National Public Radio.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

But they have a lot of shows.

Speaker 0

If you just go to their website, guys, and they do have transcripts, I think.

Speaker 0

BBC is gonna give you that more British perspective, right, and which I think probably tends to be more international as well compared to an American NPR is my guess.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

And then, you know, Hulu is what is Hulu?

Speaker 0

Do you use Hulu, Michelle?

Speaker 0

我没有

I don't

Speaker 1

Hulu。

have Hulu.

Speaker 1

I just have yeah.

Speaker 0

Just skip that one.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But I do, you know, a lot of ABC, NBC.

Speaker 1

Those are, like, your regular ones.

Speaker 1

CBS, then there's, you know, the cable networks.

Speaker 0

The cable networks.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

There's always CNN.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

That's a big one that's always on TV.

Speaker 0

So lots of places to get your news.

Speaker 0

The point is it doesn't matter where you go, just get the news.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Make sure you're getting the news.

Speaker 0

And then also so that's 50% of your media diet.

Speaker 0

And then the other 50% is, of course, TV shows.

Speaker 0

And lately, I've been going back through the old episodes of Sex and the City, Michelle.

Speaker 0

Oh, nice.

Speaker 0

The classic Sex and the City, which Sarah Michelle was it Sarah Jessica Parker?

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

It's a it's just a fun show.

Speaker 0

It's about New York.

Speaker 0

I love New York.

Speaker 0

So it's just it's fun.

Speaker 0

It's fun.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And they're rebooting it, I think.

Speaker 0

I heard that.

Speaker 0

That's so exciting.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's exciting.

Speaker 1

Or guys, you can you can check out Seinfeld, which is one of my favorite ones.

Speaker 1

I mean, it's old now, but it's so funny.

Speaker 1

And then Friends, of course.

Speaker 1

There's also Modern Family is a really, really good one to to learn with.

Speaker 0

I love that.

Speaker 0

It's so good.

Speaker 0

Modern Family, Law and Order, if you like crime shows, very common.

Speaker 0

Grey's Anatomy has, over the years, been really common.

Speaker 0

Another good example of good writing is Orange is the New Black.

Speaker 0

It's older now, but it's it's just good writing.

Speaker 0

It's really good.

Speaker 0

And, Michelle, the yeah.

Speaker 0

Go ahead.

Speaker 1

I'm sorry.

Speaker 1

And a drama another drama is This Is Us.

Speaker 0

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

This Is Us.

Speaker 0

Michelle, I have mixed feelings about that show because, to be honest, it's very human and it's very relatable.

Speaker 0

But every time I watch it, I feel, like, intensely sad.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It is a sad show.

Speaker 1

I know.

Speaker 1

You can't go into it without expecting you might you might shed a tear or two, but it's kinda.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I know.

Speaker 1

I it's it's not my number one, but I do like it.

Speaker 0

It depends on your mood.

Speaker 0

So we've given our listeners something for everyone, guys.

Speaker 0

If you're into crime shows, go for Law and Order.

Speaker 0

If you're into medical shows, Grey's Anatomy.

Speaker 0

I also like The Good Doctor.

Speaker 0

We've been watching that.

Speaker 0

Oh, I know.

Speaker 0

The Good Doctor.

Speaker 0

It's a good one.

Speaker 0

So guys, lots of options.

Speaker 0

The point is make sure you get your media diet because, you know, we need material.

Speaker 0

Michelle, in Seinfeld, there's a ton of scenarios that people are constantly native speakers are constantly referring to.

Speaker 0

So you wanna be able to participate in those conversations.

Speaker 0

Right, Michelle?

Speaker 1

Absolutely.

Speaker 1

没错。

Absolutely.

Speaker 1

Guys, this is so important.

Speaker 1

So definitely start consuming news.

Speaker 1

Start watching TV shows.

Speaker 1
