Speaker 1

In today's episode, we're gonna talk about who takes the IELTS, what is the IELTS, where do they take it, when do they take it, all of this and more in today's All Ears English IELTS episode.

Speaker 1

Hey, Jessica.

Speaker 0

How you doing?

Speaker 0

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 0

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 0

What's going on?

Speaker 1

Not much.

Speaker 1

Not much.

Speaker 1

Just enjoying talking to my favorite podcast host.

Speaker 1

Well, thank you very much.

Speaker 0

I always have a blast recording these episodes, so nothing new.

Speaker 0

Nothing new.

Speaker 0

We just love talking about the IELTS.

Speaker 0

Isn't isn't that amazing?

Speaker 1

Who knew IELTS could be so fun?

Speaker 0

I know.

Speaker 0

We we make it fun.

Speaker 0

We make it fun.

Speaker 0

And but but we had some we had an interesting question this week.

Speaker 0

You know, we wanna go back to basics in today's episode, Jessica.

Speaker 1

然后

And the

Speaker 0

question we had from one of our listeners here at All Ears English was, you know, is the IELTS for me?

Speaker 0

I mean, we've been talking about so many things like in-depth about the writing, the speaking.

Speaker 0

Well, let's go back to basics.

Speaker 0

How do we know if the IELTS is for us?

Speaker 0

I mean, who should take the IELTS?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Good question.

Speaker 1

I think IELTS is mostly for students that want to study in a university that teaches in English.

Speaker 1

So if if you want to get a bachelor's degree or a master's degree or a PhD from a university in The UK or Canada, America, Australia, and even some European countries that teach in English, they require you to take the IELTS exam if you're not a native speaker of English.

Speaker 1

And interestingly enough, I've known some Americans that had to take the IELTS test because yeah.

Speaker 1

They were Because they were applying for certain jobs or maybe immigration in Australia or

Speaker 0

Canada.

Speaker 0

Interesting.

Speaker 0

Interesting.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So there there are two types.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

The academic IELTS, and the general IELTS.

Speaker 1

So these two tests are not completely different.

Speaker 1

In fact, the listening is exactly the same.

Speaker 1

The speaking is exactly the same for academic in general.

Speaker 1

The difference is on the list or sorry, on the reading test, the reading test for the general English is slightly easier than the academic test, and the writing questions are also different.

Speaker 1

So task one on the general writing is gonna ask you to write a letter to a boss or a friend.

Speaker 1

It'll tell you what to write about.

Speaker 1

Whereas as some of our listeners know, task one writing on academic is about, like, numbers and graphs and stuff.

Speaker 1

所以

So

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So slightly more difficult.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

So mostly so then the people who take IELTS are mostly people on an academic track, moving towards, you know, a career in certain areas where they wanna be studying in an English speaking country.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So depending on the university you apply to, they're gonna have different requirements for scores.

Speaker 1

So some some colleges, some community colleges, for example, only require a 5.5 to get into.

Speaker 1

And honestly, like, that's that's easy.

Speaker 1

You guys you guys can get that.

Speaker 1

But if you wanna study, you know, like, TESOL or linguistics or something, then you're probably gonna need a 7.5.

Speaker 1

So that varies.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I know a lot of our listeners, as we always say, they're reaching for that seven because that's often the cutoff point for great career tracks.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So Sure.

Speaker 0

You know, that's that's why we're here.

Speaker 0

So Yeah.

Speaker 1

是的。

So yeah.

Speaker 1

Most mostly academic purposes.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And what does the IELTS look like?

Speaker 0

I mean, what exactly is on the test?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's a it's very different from tests like TOEFL that are on the computer.

Speaker 1

IELTS is all paper and pencil.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

It's it's really sort of a more traditional test.

Speaker 1

You have your reading booklet and your answer sheet.

Speaker 1

These are physical papers that that you can touch and write on and erase things on.

Speaker 1

So paper and pencil, no typing.

Speaker 1

You listen to a CD.

Speaker 1

You know, it's it's kinda old school in that sense.

Speaker 1

And then the the speaking, of course, you're with a real person.

Speaker 1

You're talking to a real person in a room by yourselves.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

And that's a key difference, right, between the IELTS and the TOEFL.

Speaker 0

Is it true that on the TOEFL, you're kinda talking into a a machine into a computer?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

So the speaking and the the writing are so different.

Speaker 1

So on IELTS, you're talking to a person.

Speaker 1

In TOEFL, you're talking to a computer, which I think would be weird, at least for me, it would be.

Speaker 1

And then the writing Yeah.

Speaker 1

The writing, you you have to type your essay, and I think that trips some people up because, you know, not everybody's a good typer, of course.

Speaker 0

I bet it does.

Speaker 0

I bet it does.

Speaker 0

Are you preparing to take the IELTS exam?

Speaker 0

If so, you should know exactly what the examiner is looking for on the speaking section.

Speaker 0

想免费了解的话,可以访问 allearsenglish.com/evaluation。

To find out for free, go to allearsenglish.com/evaluation.

Speaker 0

网址是 allearsenglish.com/evaluation。

That's allearsenglish.com/evaluation.

Speaker 0

And then the next question is when if I wanna take the IELTS, like, when should I take it?

Speaker 0

I mean, how far in advance should I plan?

Speaker 0

Like, what's the timeline here?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Of course, it depends on where you are in your English studies, how what level you're at.

Speaker 1

But I would say if you're around an intermediate level, you know, I would probably start planning six months ahead of time to plan out the appropriate test practice and really focusing on strengthening the specific skills you need to do well on the test.

Speaker 1

So I would yeah.

Speaker 1

Plan about about six months.

Speaker 1

However, if you're a little above intermediate, I think I think you could give yourself a a good solid three month time frame to really focus in on studying to basically get to know the test, and then you can do and then you could do well on test day.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So no less than three months.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

We don't wanna sell ourselves short here.

Speaker 0

We don't wanna stress ourselves out and rush into anything.

Speaker 0

是的。

So Yeah.

Speaker 0

Probably giving yourself more time than you think you'll need is probably safe.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

确实。

Definitely.

Speaker 1

And, you know, it is it is an expensive test.

Speaker 1

So, of course, you know, a lot of people can't afford just to be like, I'm just I'm just gonna try it out and see.

Speaker 1

Spend a couple $100 just to practice.

Speaker 1

So, you know, I don't expect you guys to do that.

Speaker 1

But having said that, I think everybody should know that most people don't get the score they need the first time.

Speaker 1

It is okay to take it a couple times, and I think a lot of people do.

Speaker 1

So plan ahead, of course, and hopefully, you do get the score you need the first time.

Speaker 1

But if it's, you know, point five or one band score lower than you need, you can get that the next time.

Speaker 0

Well, maybe that's a good mentality to have.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Jessica, going into that first test, you can say this is you know, even though, yes, it's expensive.

Speaker 0

That's really expensive for a lot of people around the world.

Speaker 0

But the first time is kind of the warm up.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

It's kind of the practice.

Speaker 0

So you take the pressure off.

Speaker 0

And then who knows?

Speaker 0

Maybe you'll surprise yourself and get the score you need the first time.

Speaker 0

But if you don't, at least you know you won't you know, that'll reduce a bit of the anxiety that we're always talking about on this show because our listeners end up saying that they get that a lot.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So expect to take it at least twice.

Speaker 1

I think that's I think that's a really good mindset to go in.

Speaker 1

Just, you know, be be you're you're serious about it.

Speaker 1

You've done your best to prepare, but you can also remind yourself like like, hey, you know, this this can just be practice, you know, and think that'll that'll help you relax enough to even do better than you would otherwise.

Speaker 0

Absolutely.

Speaker 0

And so where where do we take the IELTS exam?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So if you go to ielts.org and you could look up the test centers on ielts.org, and it'll it'll tell you the test centers in your city or in the closest city, and it'll give you, the the dates that the tests are available.

Speaker 1

And be aware that IELTS tests are, really popular right now.

Speaker 1

And these test centers do fill up quickly.

Speaker 1

I know just in my part of the world, in the Pacific Northwest, you know, it's not not a huge area, huge swath of the the globe, but just in these sort of, like, four state radius around where I am, you have to schedule, like, three months in advance.

Speaker 1

So these these tests fill up really fast.

Speaker 1

So this is just one part of your planning.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

I mean, if you're already planning, you know, three to six months ahead of time, this is part of the process.

Speaker 1

Register register months ahead to make sure you get your spot.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It goes back to the idea of make sure you're on top of things.

Speaker 0

Really put that plan into action and go way far in advance.

Speaker 0

I like that idea.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 0

I didn't realize that the test centers were filling up like that.

Speaker 0

That's crazy.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And these are these are test centers that sit, you know, a 150 to 200 students, and they're still just full up, like, months in advance.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So the the test centers are usually in schools, like private language schools or universities.

Speaker 1

But also in in in other countries, they'll be in IDP centers or, Cambridge centers will have their own, like, test center.

Speaker 1

So that's where you'll be sitting the exam.

Speaker 0

明白。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

I like that.

Speaker 0

I like that.

Speaker 0

And, well, in terms of why, why do you think it's important to learn test strategy and not just go out and speak and that have that be our practice, our IELTS preparation?

Speaker 1

Like, why

Speaker 0

do we need

Speaker 1

to do both?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's a it's a very specific test with, as we've we've talked about on a previous episode, very specific rules for taking the test.

Speaker 1

And, you know, unfortunately, it's not just about having good English.

Speaker 1

Of course, that is half of it.

Speaker 1

You do have to have a high level of of English ability.

Speaker 1

But the other half of that is is knowing what to expect on the test.

Speaker 1

What does the examiner want?

Speaker 1

How much time do you have for the listening and the and the reading tests?

Speaker 1

These are all things that you have to be aware of before you go in.

Speaker 1

What do what are the question types?

Speaker 1

What what kind of essay do I have to write?

Speaker 1

These are all very specific testing ideas, and you have to have the specific test strategies to go along with them.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I think I think I've said before that I've known a couple native English speakers that have gone in to take the test usually for an immigration purpose, and they didn't get a nine because they didn't prepare anything.

Speaker 1

So, yeah, be Yeah.

Speaker 1

Be aware.

Speaker 0

So it's fifty fifty.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Be aware.

Speaker 0

So even native speakers could not get the best score on this test.

Speaker 0

So that really tells us that we need not just the practice and the everyday kind of immersion work and the general learning, but also those tips, strategies, sense a sense of what's on the exam.

Speaker 0

Perfect.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

Awesome.

Speaker 0

Well, thanks for enlightening us today, Jessica, this exam.

Speaker 0

I think we have a better sense now of what the IELTS is all about and who might wanna take it and where and when and why.

Speaker 0

Any final thoughts?

Speaker 1

Just just for people to not be discouraged by these rules and stuff that we're talking about, just to let people know that it's it's very possible to do well.

Speaker 1

It's just it's up to you to have a good sound study schedule to do it.

Speaker 1

But I am more than confident you guys can put in the effort and get the score that you need.

Speaker 0

Totally.

Speaker 0

And keep your eye on your goal.

Speaker 0

Again, in the end, your goal is not a seven on the test.

Speaker 0

It is your career.

Speaker 0

It's getting into that that institution.

Speaker 0

It's moving forward in your career as an engineer or a doctor or whatever it is that you wanna do.

Speaker 0

And the IELTS is just one stepping stone on that Yeah.

Speaker 0

On your road to your goal, to your dream.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

Exactly.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So best of luck, guys.

Speaker 1

I know you can do it.

Speaker 0

We know you can do it.

Speaker 0

We're here for you guys.

Speaker 0

好的。

Speaker 0

Speaker 0

My pleasure.

Speaker 0
