I'm host Sarah Bowen Shea, and I'm joined today by my fabulous cohost, Ellison Weist.

Speaker 0

Hiya, Ellison.

Speaker 0

Heyya, Sarah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

The laughter is already starting

Speaker 1

I know.

Speaker 0

With a timely soccer joke, timely football joke.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

足球。

Footy.

Speaker 1

足球。

Footy.

Speaker 0

Well, on this episode, we are serving up some summer reads.

Speaker 0

So, let's talk for a second about our feelings about beach reads.

Speaker 0

Let's be candid and, you know, really, vulnerable here.

Speaker 0

So be because, you know, I'm not much typically for beach reads.

Speaker 1

Neither am I.

Speaker 1

I haven't been for a long time.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I'm not sure.

Speaker 0

I don't know if I ever have been for beach well, I went through a big Danielle Steele phase a long time ago.

Speaker 0

How about that reaching back into the Hey.

Speaker 0

I lived in San Francisco.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

She was right there at Pacific Heights.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

In her multimillion dollar mansion.

Speaker 0

So so these aren't beach reads exactly, or in any shape, but these are books that we chose that are easy for lounging poolside or strolling on the sand.

Speaker 0

They these books can be your companion if you're doing that.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

当然。

Definitely.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

So we are starting off big with Whistler.

Speaker 0

It's from one of what I would posit is our finest one of our finest living American novelist, Ann Patchett.

Speaker 0

So do you think that's hyperbole, or do you agree with my assessment?

Speaker 1

Not at all.

Speaker 1

Not at all.

Speaker 1

I I really think that, and what she has done for the community of reading.

Speaker 1

She also gets a mark in my book.

Speaker 1

A good one.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

So, summarize this book for us, would you?

Speaker 1

好的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You've got a middle aged woman and her husband are strolling through the, Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Speaker 1

Museum of art.

Speaker 1

And, yeah, In New York City when her husband cottons on to a fact that an older gentleman has been staring, not at them, but at her, at his wife.

Speaker 1

And she really hasn't noticed it.

Speaker 1

The husband ends up going over and having a conversation with the older man.

Speaker 1

And it turns out that this gentleman is the wife's long ago stepfather.

Speaker 1

And as when she was a child, he was her stepfather just for about three three years, two or three years, and she has not seen him since she was about 10 years old.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

And she's now in her, I guess

Speaker 0

She's 57, I think.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

I like that.

Speaker 1

So it's been a long time.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And so what we have what Patchett does here is she takes us into how they get reacquainted, but also she takes us back to a very traumatic event that happened to both of them when the narrator was a was a young girl.

Speaker 1

The main character was a young girl.

Speaker 1

And why what that precipitated and why they haven't seen each other in all this time.

Speaker 1

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

And, you know, Patchett is in anybody else's hands.

Speaker 1

I think this would have been a real problem.

Speaker 1

I think you remember how we've talked about several times on this podcast about how often you're in one area when it's a dual time

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Novel, and you're like, okay.

Speaker 1

Let's get me back.

Speaker 1

I want you to go back to the present.

Speaker 1

And Patchett, she could do this standing on her head with one hand.

Speaker 1

So I never had any of that.

Speaker 1

I don't know about you.

Speaker 1

是的。

But Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 1

I mean, way she spins both those stories, wow.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

So, I mean, I agree that she she handles both timelines incredibly with great talent and aplomb.

Speaker 0

And but this is very much a quiet book as as many Patchett novels are.

Speaker 0

But this one, even more quiet than most in my estimation.

Speaker 1

So would agree.

Speaker 0

Thus, it the modern day tale, you know, timeline could skew as slow or in a less kind light as dull, that it's there's a subtle beauty that came through for me, especially in the flashback scenes.

Speaker 0

And I'm not saying that I necessarily wanted to be in the flashback scenes, but I did find them more interesting.

Speaker 0

And that's partly because so the protagonist's name is Daphne, and her husband Jonathan is thirteen years older than she is.

Speaker 0

And that's germane because his I feel he his treatment of his wife is very much that of a man of that era.

Speaker 0

And so I found him a bit annoying and patronizing toward his wife, and it kinda ruffled my feminist feathers a little bit.

Speaker 0

But, as with all Patchett novels, there's this subtle beauty in the language and the symbolism.

Speaker 0

So good.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

没错。

And yeah.

Speaker 0

比如说

For instance

Speaker 1

growth of Daphne.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

There is that.

Speaker 0

没错。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Talk a little bit more about that.

Speaker 0

Would you?

Speaker 1

Think that Patchett, again, like you say, subtle, and that's a perfect warrior.

Speaker 1

I think what we see through this is Daphne has sort of been in a just, you know, her relationship with her husband has been fine.

Speaker 1

But with the entry of her stepfather, she kinda goes outside of her comfort zone as far as getting to know him more.

Speaker 1

I think her husband sort of thinks, oh, what a nice coincidence.

Speaker 1

This is cool, but then sort of wants to maybe leave that alone, leave it at the museum.

Speaker 1

And she sort of goes farther.

Speaker 1

She obviously, you know, wants to know more.

Speaker 1

She wants to spend more time with him.

Speaker 1

And so she very subtly, but you can see it in the novel happening, she sort of makes things happen and pushes things along that possibly she would not have if she had run everything past Jonathan.

Speaker 1

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

And and then also Jonathan, has a family situation that, requires him to leave, go out of town for several weeks Right.

Speaker 0

Which I thought was a little too convenient.

Speaker 0

Right.

Speaker 0

Right.

Speaker 1

I'm willing to give her that.

Speaker 1

But I don't know.

Speaker 1

I just found I found the when she's, you know, getting back in touch with her stepfather who Eddie, we haven't named him yet, Eddie.

Speaker 1

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

I really found that part sort of a nice warm bath.

Speaker 1

I know you were more anxious to get but I just thought it was beautiful the way they not only became reacquainted, but were able to slip into an adult version of what Eddie and Daphne had when he was her stepfather.

Speaker 1

And I just thought that was beautifully rendered.

Speaker 0

It precisely.

Speaker 0

没错。

Precisely.

Speaker 0

Almost to the point, though, of I found it a little hard to believe almost that I just I just thought Eddie was so dear and witty and thoughtful, and he just seemed really too good to be true.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It maybe I don't have enough kind, dear, you know, thoughtful people in my life.

Speaker 0

Kidding.

Speaker 1

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But it would be interesting to hear what other readers thought about that, whether that is, like, as in my mind, it was just like, oh, what it like you say, a dear, sweet man, and look at how the two of them have been able to make a not the same relationship, obviously, but a different relationship.

Speaker 1

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And a sweeter, in many ways, relationship because they both had more agency in it.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Good point.

Speaker 0

I did feel sorry, though, of them for all those lost years.

Speaker 1

Yes.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

And the reason behind it.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

The reasons.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So and going back to the symbolism, you know, the again, I'll show the cover.

Speaker 0

And for people who are, merely listening, it is a lone horse in a field, and it's but it's saddled up, and it has a bridle in its mouth, and it's, looks like an oil painting.

Speaker 0

And so it's Whistler, and you're like, wait.

Speaker 0

什么?

What?

Speaker 0

Is this a book about a horse?

Speaker 0

Like and so so for, a few you know?

Speaker 0

And and every time I pick up the book, I look at the cover and, you know, open it up and read it.

Speaker 0

And I think, well, when is this?

Speaker 0

I'm thinking maybe the horse's name is Whistler.

Speaker 0

When is Whistler gonna show up in this book, and how is Whistler gonna show up?

Speaker 0

And, you know, it takes a long time to make fully make sense, but I just thought ultimately it was very poignant, very lovely, very, unexpectedly makes sense.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

It's it's and that's another reason why I feel she's one of our greatest novelists because

Speaker 0

没错。

Precisely.

Speaker 0

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

She and she does that so that you're it's in the back of your mind who is Whistler.

Speaker 1

Is that the horse?

Speaker 1

What's the horse?

Speaker 1

But at the same time, you're not, okay.

Speaker 1

When are we getting to the horse part?

Speaker 1

It not that at all.

Speaker 1

And then when she weaves it in, you're like, uh-huh.

Speaker 0

Particularly because she spools out a little bit and then Right.

Speaker 0

A number of pages later, a little bit more.

Speaker 0

And each segment about Whistler kind of gets longer in the telling.

Speaker 0

And so then it's really envelops you.

Speaker 0

And and then it's like, you know, cue the angels singing.

Speaker 0

I get it.

Speaker 0

Why this Right.

Speaker 0

Story is being brought in here.

Speaker 0

So, so I'd love if we could rank Whistler compared to other recent Patchett novels.

Speaker 0

I did I did that with a friend of mine.

Speaker 0

I should have looked up the text thread.

Speaker 0

And my friend liked, as I recall, liked Whistler better than the Dutch house, which

Speaker 1

K.

Speaker 0

I did not agree with.

Speaker 0

So for me, I still love Tom Lake the best.

Speaker 0

I just love Tom Lake.

Speaker 0

And then I adore the Dutch house.

Speaker 0

And, I mean, who's to say if any of them compare to her?

Speaker 0

Is Bell Canto her first novel?

Speaker 1

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

I have a copy of her first novel.

Speaker 1

The patron saint of liars came out in 1992, and I would really encourage people if you have not read that, go back.

Speaker 1

If for no other reason to see how she has she had that talent and yet to see how she's come with it, it's it's beautiful.

Speaker 1

I just reread it a while ago, and I was like, oh.

Speaker 1

Because my mother my mother, who was also a fan, a great reader Yes.

Speaker 1

We talked once a week, and one day she said to me, I just finished the most marvelous book, and you've got to get a copy.

Speaker 0

真好。

That's lovely.

Speaker 0

真好。

That's lovely.

Speaker 0

So so I would put in terms of, more modern or or, more recent Patchett novels, for me, it would go Tom Lake, Dutch House, and then Whistler, and then Commonwealth.

Speaker 0

I didn't that book didn't really too much stick with me.

Speaker 1

So That was my least favorite.

Speaker 1

Well, actually, I you know, she wrote two after the patron saint of liar, Taft and the magician's assistant, and I did not finish either of those books.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

So I just thought, okay.

Speaker 1

That was a that was a, you know, none.

Speaker 0

She burned out.

Speaker 0

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

We can file Ann Patchett on the garbage heap.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

Thanks, mom, but no thanks.

Speaker 1

Phoenix.

Speaker 1

And then she wrote Bell Canto, which is my personal favorite.

Speaker 1

I think Bell Canto is just marvelous.

Speaker 1

And Mhmm.

Speaker 1

You know, if if you try to sell it to somebody, well, you know, if you start talking about the plot, which I won't hear, you're gonna get a lot of glazed overlooks.

Speaker 0

没错。

Precisely.

Speaker 0

And you'll be

Speaker 1

like, what?

Speaker 0

Particularly.

Speaker 0

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 0

The woman who wrote that novel also wrote Tom Lake?

Speaker 0

I don't understand.

Speaker 0

Well, kind of like, what is her one, the state of

Speaker 1

Wonder.

Speaker 1

The state of wonder.

Speaker 0

State of wonder.

Speaker 0

That's another one that, travels very far afield.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Very much so.

Speaker 1

In fact yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That and Bell but Bell Canto is probably my favorite, and I guess and then I would say Whistler and then the Dutch House.

Speaker 0

Oh oh, Tom Lake's not up there for you.

Speaker 1

Tom Lake, I enjoyed, and I admired, but no, it's not it's not up at the top for me.

Speaker 1

I really I really I mean, I I can honestly say that with that with the exception of Taft and the magician's assistant, she's never really disappointed me.

Speaker 1

Commonwealth, I think, was sort of mediocre, but, no.

Speaker 1

I just I loved what she did with this novel.

Hettas is a Canadian brand that only makes running shoes for women.

Most running shoe outsoles start breaking down within a few 100 kilometers.

Speaker 0

Hettas took a different approach with the Alma line, a cast polyurethane outsole instead of standard rubber.

Speaker 0

It's roughly double the abrasion resistance of traditional rubber, and it's not just a lab claim.

Speaker 0

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

The next book is The Au Pair by Teddy Wayne, a twisty page turner of a domestic thriller.

Speaker 0

So tell us about it, please, Ellison.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Well, let you know, it starts off and you think, yeah.

Speaker 1

Same old.

Speaker 1

Same old.

Speaker 1

You got a Steven who, is a kind of one and done novelist.

Speaker 1

He had this novel that shot off, and he's been working on his second novel now for about five years.

Speaker 1

And he's to say that he's got writer's block and is stumbling is an understatement.

Speaker 1

In the meantime, he is married to Lily.

Speaker 1

Lily is an extreme go getter, works in finance, is mainly the breadwinner of the family, also comes from a very wealthy family.

Speaker 1

And so Steven has sort of sees himself in some ways being relegated to a house husband, but they've always had a nanny for their two girls.

Speaker 1

They lose their longtime nanny, and Lucy says to Steven, find us a new one.

Speaker 0

Uh-huh.

Speaker 1

And Steven does just that, and he finds a hot chick from is she from no.

Speaker 1

She's Norwegian, Astrid.

Speaker 1

Young woman.

Speaker 1

She's I think she's probably about 21, 22.

Speaker 1

But she comes with all the the accreditations, and and so Astrid comes to New York and is the nanny.

Speaker 1

And so then you think, okay.

Speaker 1

We're gonna go into the same thing here.

Speaker 1

Husband starts affair with a nanny.

Speaker 0

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

Pandemonium ensues, but that is when Wayne sort of starts to twist things because the narrator is Steven.

Speaker 1

And you get to know Steven, and then something happens, something very unfortunate happens.

Speaker 1

And all of a sudden, we don't know who the good guys are.

Speaker 1

We think we know what happened, but do we?

Speaker 1

是的

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

And we think we know what is going to happen between Steven and Astrid, but do we?

Speaker 1

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

So there's there's a lot of mind boggling and sort of, you know, what what's happening here?

Speaker 1

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

He certainly is going to do this.

Speaker 1

Isn't he?

Speaker 1

And a lot of Wayne really plays with our psyches here.

Speaker 1

I'll just say that.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

What do you think?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So this novel hooked me from the get go.

Speaker 0

And even though, you know, a plot point or two strain credulity, I I was willing to overlook that as it was a really enjoyable ride.

Speaker 0

As you say, you you sort of you know, there were some curveballs that you didn't that I didn't see coming.

Speaker 0

You know, just it got my mind whirring as I was reading, trying to figure out where it was going.

Speaker 0

I started it on an airplane, and I read it for the entire two hour flight.

Speaker 1

Wow.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

You know, that for me is really saying something.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And as I was reading this, I was thinking that it's, you know, somewhat uncommon to have a male narrator in a thriller.

Speaker 0

You know, there's so many women, you know, the kind of girl on a train.

Speaker 1

In peril.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Women in peril narrators.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对

Yes.

Speaker 0

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So so, you know, sure, Steven is narrating what happens to him and the two women in his life, but he is the main character.

Speaker 0

And I thought, well, maybe I just haven't read enough thrillers.

Speaker 0

Maybe I'm ignorant of male protagonist thrillers, but, no, a Google search confirmed my supposition that that typically it is a woman who is the, you know, storyteller.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And he could have done that.

Speaker 1

Wayne could have done that easily with this story, neither Lucy or Astrid's voice.

Speaker 1

So I do think it's interesting.

Speaker 1

He decided to have

Speaker 0

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Stephen be the narrator.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

So so, yeah, I found it, very, very enjoyable, and I thought I I felt like I was in capable hands with Teddy Wayne in the telling of the story.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

Our third novel that's ripe for summer reading is The Shampoo Effect by Jenny Jackson.

Speaker 0

对。

And yeah.

Speaker 0

Tell us about the plot of this one.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

This one is probably I noticed that you have not or had not read Pineapple Street, her first novel?

Speaker 0

Her first novel, but I have since listened to it.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Alright.

Speaker 1

Because, there was a lot of press that went out with her first novel because she's a huge, bigwig in the publishing industry.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

And I would I have to say that I went into this second book, The Shampoo Effect, with a little bit of hesitation, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Speaker 1

So did I.

Speaker 1

Thought it was really it was better put together than I thought.

Speaker 1

And neither you nor I are in the age category that I know.

Speaker 1

I know.

Speaker 1

Characters.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Speak for yourself.

Speaker 1

So this is about a young woman, Caroline Lash, who has been in the publishing business and was in publicity and then really had been writing short stories on her own, was published in the New Yorker, and that emboldened her to try to get one of these what do

Speaker 0

you call them?

Speaker 0

Like a fellowship.

Speaker 1

Green.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Like a fellowship, like a McDowell or or something.

Speaker 1

And she applies for this fellowship and gets it.

Speaker 1

And it's a very small sort of, beach community, but a very small sort of high end beach community.

Speaker 1

对。

Uh-huh.

Speaker 0

Up in Cape Cod.

Speaker 1

对。

Uh-huh.

Speaker 1

Up in Cape Cod.

Speaker 1

很好。

Good.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

And it's for nine months.

Speaker 1

And when she gets there, she really even before she gets there, she meets a young man who is sweet, quirky, and it turns out that he actually works up there.

Speaker 1

And he is part of a group of friends that have known each other since they were very, very young.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

He's a good bit not a good bit older.

Speaker 1

He's probably about five or six years or maybe about ten years older than her, was it?

Speaker 0

I would say eight to ten years older than she is.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I think she's I think she's definitely, very beginning Gen z.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And then the boyfriend and all his friends are millennials.

Speaker 0

And that's crucial because ultimately that's some of the themes in the book explore that.

Speaker 1

And that's that's where I was sort of like because when you start talking gens to me, I'm like, you know, z x.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

Isn't that because my kids are Gen z?

Speaker 0

所以。

So

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It just to me, and and Carol's Gen X.

Speaker 1

And so, you know, I'm sort of like, oh my gosh.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

Get me back with the boomers.

Speaker 0

I was writing the notes.

Speaker 0

I'd looked it up to make sure I was right in my names of the generations.

Speaker 0

So I stand firm.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I almost feel like I need to have something on the refrigerator.

Speaker 1

Gen z's are easier.

Speaker 1

X世代呢,

Gen x,

Speaker 0

you know, generation genealogy.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Somebody is going to take that idea We go with want residuals.

Speaker 1

That's exactly right.

Speaker 1

At least send me one.

Speaker 1

Anyway, she becomes very involved with this young man whose name is Van.

Speaker 1

And Carolyn and Van start a very sweet relationship that moves along right quickly, and he wants to introduce her to this group of of friends that he has.

Speaker 1

And they are pretty close knit.

Speaker 1

And by that, I mean, they don't suffer newcomers easily.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

So early on in the book, and this is not, well, it may be a bit of a spoiler, but Carolyn finds out that Van's old girlfriend is pregnant.

Speaker 1

They Van had midget

Speaker 0

tour.

Speaker 0

He's he's very open about it.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

That's true.

Speaker 1

And they had friends with benefits.

Speaker 1

You know, he says, we haven't dated in a long time, really since, you know, high school and college, and this just happened.

Speaker 1

And, I still wanna be with you, Caroline, but, you know, you need to realize that this is happening, and I'm I'm, you know, gonna try to support her.

Speaker 0

In in Van in Van's defense, he got, Bailey, the woman pregnant before he met Caroline.

Speaker 1

So That's exactly right.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

So he did not dip out on Caroline.

Speaker 1

He That's exactly right.

Speaker 0

The the conception predated him meeting Caroline.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

That's exactly right, doctor.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

So, of course, this, you know, leaves you with a, you can see this is going go in many directions, and it does, with Carolyn on one hand trying to be the supportive girlfriend, also trying to sort of break into this group of friends, some of whom are more accepting of her than others.

Speaker 1

And, you know, we get to meet the friends, particularly the women, and their spouses or partners.

Speaker 1

And this speaks again to what you were saying about the difference as far as how like, who knew that so many of these people smoke?

Speaker 1

I mean, you know, my generation.

Speaker 0

Gummies.

Speaker 0

My gosh.

Speaker 0

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

Now we're going to sound like like old people, but

Speaker 1

I just was like daddies.

Speaker 0

I'm like, wait.

Speaker 0

Do millennial parents really walk around stoned all the time?

Speaker 1

And that that couple turns, did it?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Know.

Speaker 0

That's the thing.

Speaker 0

They take turns.

Speaker 0

So, you know, you're on the even days, honey, and on the odd days, I get to take my gummy or take a few hits off a doobie.

Speaker 0

Like, I was like, what?

Speaker 0

Aren't phones supposed to be enough to keep us, you know, entertained?

Speaker 1

我们

Like, we

Speaker 0

have to numb out too?

Speaker 0

So, yeah.

Speaker 1

And I mean, it's and it's a serious, I mean, the way they talk about it, and yet the way they talk about raising children, all of the things that come into that now, you know, the dual parenting, which, you know, my generation, we were sort of tip of the iceberg on that, and we didn't have anybody.

Speaker 1

I mean, you know, most of our mothers my mother didn't work outside the home.

Speaker 1

So it's interesting as coming in from my generation and seeing that.

Speaker 1

And then you think about Carolyn who is striving to, you know, establish herself as a novelist and sees what's going on with this group of friends and begins to see that, some pretty good material here.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Yes.

Speaker 0

And and it should be pointed out that so so this town, this fictional town is called Greenhead, and it is, supposedly based on Ipswich, Massachusetts, which is where Jenny Jackson grew up, and then also where is it John Updike or John Sheaver?

Speaker 1

John Sheaver.

Speaker 0

John Sheaver.

Speaker 0

I thought

Speaker 1

it was Sheaver.

Speaker 1

I'm pretty

Speaker 0

没错。

sure.

Speaker 0

就是。

It is.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

It is Sheaver because all the whole time I was reading, I was thinking it was Updike.

Speaker 0

It's Sheaver.

Speaker 0

And so it's John Sheaver was from Ipswich, or at least that's where he set his kind of famous, really upstart novels that really

Speaker 1

short stories.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And blew open the nineteen sixties bedroom communities and showed kind of what was boiling underneath the surface there.

Speaker 0

And so then and then she's in this Caroline is in this house that was this fictional John Sheaver's his cottage, his writing cottage.

Speaker 0

So that to me was very interesting and a nice literary slant

Speaker 1

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

To the shampoo effect.

Speaker 0

And I just also felt that that Jackson really examined some really interesting contemporary themes.

Speaker 0

I found her it wasn't very long.

Speaker 0

I mean, it was only maybe half a page or maybe a couple pages, but kind of the difference between the sexual mores of millennials versus Gen z.

Speaker 0

As the mom of a bunch of Gen Zers, I found that really interesting.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

And and what it was was, you know, that that saying that millennials are kind of the last generation that see things as binary.

Speaker 0

And so that was interesting.

Speaker 0

And I thought it was interesting to have Caroline be the sole Gen Zer.

Speaker 0

没错。

And then Yes.

Speaker 0

And so but so Jackson really does a good job of bringing you into the novel with Caroline.

Speaker 0

Like, I feel like there's more pages given to her in the beginning so that she's established as the main character, but then she really fleshes out so many of the friends, as to your point, mostly the women.

Speaker 0

And so then, you know, the story each chapter is, you know, about a different person and, you know, she comes back to Bailey or whoever it is.

Speaker 0

And but so that you're really kind of rooted in with Caroline, and then the rest get layered on with with skill and finesse.

Speaker 1

Very much so.

Speaker 1

Very much.

Speaker 1

And she you know, I loved also there's a a one storyline where she's talking about this one couple having to be, especially the wife or the the woman, having to be feeling like she has to take care of her parents.

Speaker 1

That her parents are in a financial sort of a precarious position.

Speaker 1

And that that really toggles with a lot of what I'm seeing now is that there are a lot of people my age who either have not saved adequately for retirement or have given their children a lot, just whatever, or they haven't been able to save.

Speaker 1

So they're in a precarious position at the same time that their adult children are trying to establish themselves, are raising small children.

Speaker 1

And, you know, it's another look at the sandwich generation.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So I really I thought this was a really engaging novel.

Speaker 0

I was always very excited to pick it back up.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And so so much so that I would kind of carve out extra time, you know, instead of being like, oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna keep doing Duolingo for ten more minutes.

Speaker 0

I'm like, no.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

I gotta I wanna read The Shampoo Effect, and read for much longer than I planned to read.

Speaker 0

So so as I said then, I liked it so well.

Speaker 0

So then I went back and I listened to Jenny Jackson's debut novel that you mentioned, Pineapple Street, which again is similar.

Speaker 0

It has a fairly large cast of characters all in the same orbit.

Speaker 0

But this time, instead of a group of friends, it's about a wealthy family in Brooklyn.

Speaker 0

Interestingly, though, I found both the main characters in The Shampoo Effect and Pineapple Street, Caroline and Georgia, respectively, who is the the family's youngest daughter, I didn't really like them very much.

Speaker 0

I found them kind of insipid.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And I wonder if that I don't wanna say I don't think that was intentional on her effect and her, but I wondered.

Speaker 0

I think it is kind of intentional.

Speaker 0

Like, yeah.

Speaker 0

Just I just kinda wanted to shake them by the shoulders.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So but, I mean, the writing, the pace of the plot, they all kept me very engaged and entertained.

Speaker 0

Like, definitely bring this on a trip because you will be gravitating toward it repeatedly.

Speaker 0

That's what I think.

Speaker 1

And another book club book.

Speaker 1

I really think I think even for somebody in well, maybe not my generation.

Speaker 1

I'm thinking about how some of my peers might

Speaker 0

我的

My

Speaker 1

Atlanta.

Speaker 1

That is outlandish.

Speaker 1

Now what is this?

Speaker 1

What is it they're taking?

Speaker 1

是

Are

Speaker 0

those Sour Patch Kid gummies?

Speaker 0

No, not the same type of gummy.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But I do think, I really like this.

Speaker 1

And usually, you know, when there's a big debut that comes out and Pineapple Street was a big debut, usually, I find that the second book has sort of pushed, you know, come on.

Speaker 1

Let's ride your high and get it out.

Speaker 1

I did not have the feeling with the shampoo effect.

Speaker 1

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Thought it was great.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And I'm looking forward.

Speaker 0

I hope Jenny Jackson has many more novels to come after this.

Speaker 0

If if you're listening, Jenny.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Take it from us, hon.

Speaker 1

你

You

Speaker 0

got a bright future ahead of you.

Speaker 1

很好。

Good.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

It's time for another brief break.

Speaker 0

I am learning so much with Feisty, including new for me brands like Cozy Earth.

Speaker 0

Cozy Earth

Cozy Earth was founded by a dad of three who believes that rest matters, a philosophy I fully embrace.

Speaker 0

Turns out this guy, Tyler, had dreamed of making the softest sheets since he was a kid.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

But you go, Tyler, because that's exactly what Cozy Earth does, making ultra soft temperature regulating bedding and loungewear.

Speaker 0

Cozy Earth

Cozy Earth bamboo sheets are crafted from 100% bamboo viscous, and they are a dream to sleep on, especially on a hot summer night.

Speaker 0

The first thing I noticed when I got between the sheets is how buttery soft and silky smooth they are.

Speaker 0

Then I quickly realized they also felt cool to the touch, even near where Augy, my incinerator hot French bulldog, was nestled.

Speaker 0

The premium bamboo viscous fabric is naturally temperature regulating, so it keeps you cool when it's warm out and cozy when it's not.

Speaker 0

As a gal who sweats nearly as much at night as I do on a run, these sheets are magic.

Speaker 0

Cozy Earth

Cozy Earth stands behind everything they make with an incredible ten year warranty and one hundred nights of hassle free returns on bedding.

Speaker 0

Let me repeat.

Speaker 0

You have one hundred nights to see if these cool and luxe sheets are as dreamy for you as they are for me.

Speaker 0

They're made from viscous from bamboo, breathable, soft, and built for summer.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So it turns out, Ellison, that both you and I recently we had a little bit longer time to read than usual because we did the cookbook episode two weeks ago.

Speaker 0

没错。

Check yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Thank you.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

很好。

Great.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

不错。

Good.

Speaker 0

不错。

Good.

Speaker 0

I will tell Sheila.

Speaker 0

And so you and I had a little bit of extra reading time, so we both turned to graphic novels.

Speaker 0

So we saying.

Speaker 0

I know.

Speaker 0

Without conferring with each other.

Speaker 0

No text threads.

Speaker 0

Right.

Speaker 0

It was just in the in the ether.

Speaker 0

So I'm gonna, talk about the one that I just finished last night, and it is a hefty hardcover graphic memoir called Anxietyland by Gemma Correll, and this just debuted in April.

Speaker 0

So when I saw that, was like, oh, we can talk about it.

Speaker 0

So it humorously and poignantly explores the author's lifelong struggle, although she is somewhat young, with anxiety, depression, and agoraphobia using the metaphor of a surreal amusement park in her mind to describe her appearances.

Speaker 0

And, you know, again, remember that there's lots of pictures so that, you know, it's it's almost a little bit like candy land.

Speaker 0

I mean, she don't she has this whole map in the beginning of Anxietyland.

Speaker 1

Oh, gosh.

Speaker 1

Oh, wow.

Speaker 0

And, I'm for for those of you who are watching on YouTube, you know, so there's the house of no fun.

Speaker 0

There's the depression obstacle course, the worry go round, downward spiral.

Speaker 0

So that was that was super clever.

Speaker 0

And Gemma, as you might guess from her name, is British, and, she combines witty, charming illustrations with honest, very vulnerable, and often humorous text.

Speaker 0

And I'm gonna admit that I was drawn to it.

Speaker 0

I I forget where I read about it.

Speaker 0

I don't I don't have any memory at all, where.

Speaker 0

I will admit that I'm reading it in the hopes of being better able to understand my two daughters better.

Speaker 0

Like so many young people, they struggle with anxiety, and I'm trying to be more sympathetic to get a sense of how they move through the world because anxiety is not one of my it's not in my deck of playing cards.

Speaker 0

So I I just find graphic novel novels an easily digestible medium, so I feel I'm gaining some useful awareness from the novel.

Speaker 0

Although, I wanna be clear, the author struggles far more mightily than my daughter's do with her experiences, you know, with anxiety and depression and agoraphobia.

Speaker 0

I mean, hers, Gemma Correll's, are really heightened, and they are debilitating at times.

Speaker 0

So so yeah.

Speaker 0

So so the book avoids veering completely into the bleak because of the humor.

Speaker 0

So and I found myself often laughing out loud over this bittersweet memoir.

Speaker 0

I particularly the last the part that I cranked through last night, I really, really was enjoying it.

Speaker 0

So

Speaker 1

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So climbs up.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's quite long.

Speaker 0

It's yeah.

Speaker 0

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

But since it's a graphic novel, it goes more quickly.

Speaker 0

It goes very quickly.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Because, I mean, there's some graphic novels you can finish.

Speaker 0

I've I have I remember the, My Friend Jeffrey, the one about Jeffrey Dahmer.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Let's talk about it.

Speaker 1

I've heard of Yeah.

Speaker 0

Gosh, is really that is a really, really, really good graphic novel.

Speaker 1

It is.

Speaker 1

It's it's it's creep I mean,

Speaker 0

obviously, but to stomach, but I, I mean, I read that one in an hour while, you know, dinner was in the oven.

Speaker 0

所以,

So

Speaker 1

是的,

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You can read.

Speaker 1

I mine is Charity and Sylvia.

Speaker 1

对,

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

And I know we're on a time crunch, so I'll just let you know that this is about two lesbians who lived in Vermont in the early part of the nineteenth century into the mid and later part.

Speaker 1

And it's by Tillie Walden, and she is a fantastic graphic artist.

Speaker 1

I've never heard of her before, but I read about this somewhere.

Speaker 1

And, essentially, she just talks about these two women who not only live together, but were accepted by many in their communities and their families even though it was never spoken out loud as to what their relationship was, but they were together for over forty years.

Speaker 1

Wow.

Speaker 1

And I just found it very compelling, very thought provoking because you're sitting there seeing what these women had to go through, one of whom was a lot more outgoing than the other woman, the way that their families accepted them and the way that the townspeople and, you know, you're talking about a very conservative time and part of the world, also took them into their midst.

Speaker 1

I would recommend it.

Speaker 1

It's great.

Speaker 0

And does that graphic artist, does she have other graphic novels or no?

Speaker 1

有的。

She does.

Speaker 1

I have not looked up in other ones, but this was really her first sort of biography, you know, take on on doing that.

Speaker 1

But she's she's had some other stuff.

Speaker 1

She's very well known in the graphic artist world, which I am not familiar with.

Speaker 0

No.

Speaker 0
