Welcome to another mother runner, your best running friend in podcast form.

Speaker 0

We do all the talking even on the uphills.

Speaker 0

I'm your host, Bowen Shea, with cohost Amanda Loudin.

Speaker 0

Hello, Amanda.

Speaker 1

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 1

How are you?

Speaker 0

I am quite good.

Speaker 0

I, though, had went to a birthday party on Friday evening, and, oh my goodness, the the ravages of getting older.

Speaker 1

What happened?

Speaker 0

So it was a very sporty birthday party.

Speaker 0

Okay?

Speaker 0

So it was the birthday party for my friend Sue, who I have known for several years via pickleball.

Speaker 0

And Sue is sporty, sporty, sporty.

Speaker 0

She also plays competitive soccer on a women's league.

Speaker 0

And so this was the Venn diagram of her pickleball and soccer friends.

Speaker 0

It was a it was a party for women only.

Speaker 0

And so and the people it was up in Vancouver, Washington, so there's more space than you would have if you went to somebody's house in Portland.

Speaker 0

So, the woman who was hosting, Brandy, had all sorts of games set up.

Speaker 0

So at first, I was playing, cornhole, which I do love a good cornhole, but I had never really played.

Speaker 0

I didn't know the rules.

Speaker 0

Like, I had just, you know, kind of tossed a a you know, one of the Yeah.

Speaker 0

Cornhole beanbags.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

So, are you have you actually played

Speaker 1

Oh, I love it.

Speaker 1

I do.

Speaker 0

I think it's

Speaker 2

really fun.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So okay.

Speaker 0

So I was playing that and that that, oh my gosh, Brandy is very art again, the host is very artistic.

Speaker 0

She is an artist.

Speaker 0

And so she really went all out doing fabulous kind of pickleball decorations, including getting these very large inflatable, plastic balls that she then, with a Sharpie, drew to make look like they had holes in them so it looked like a pickleball.

Speaker 0

Like, enormous enormous pickleballs.

Speaker 0

Then she and her husband made four enormous wooden pickleball paddles.

Speaker 0

Like, enormous.

Speaker 0

Like, bigger than they're reminiscent of what you use, you know, to get a pizza out of a wood burning pizza oven.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

That's great.

Speaker 0

But much bigger than that.

Speaker 0

And then they had a net, and they set up a court on their grass, on their yard.

Speaker 0

And so, anyway but pretty quickly, women broke two of the paddles.

Speaker 0

These homemade paddles.

Speaker 0

So so because they are I guess the majority of people there were soccer players.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So then they made up this game where it was I think that truly probably came closest to that Australian game netball

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

那个

Which

Speaker 0

is like volleyball but with your feet.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

But that it had these these enormous air sets, pickleball.

Speaker 0

So so not a regulation, netball.

Speaker 0

So and there were I think we played six on a side.

Speaker 0

And so, and they're playing while I was playing, Why could I not remember the name of it?

Speaker 0

Cornhole.

Speaker 0

And so then they're like, oh, you know, with with the people I was playing with, oh, Cooper, you know, Elisa, Sarah, come over and play.

Speaker 0

And I was like, no.

Speaker 0

不行。

No.

Speaker 0

不行。

No.

Speaker 0

I will totally hurt my knee if I do that.

Speaker 0

And they're like, come on.

Speaker 0

Come on.

Speaker 0

And I'm like, no.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna hurt my knee if I do that because my knee's been bothering me off and on for about a year, my left knee.

Speaker 0

And particularly because I was wearing kinda nice sandals, and so I had taken off my shoes to play cornhole, and I could see that several people were playing this netball game barefoot even though there were little acorns kind of scattered all around

Speaker 3

the yard.

Speaker 0

So, anyway.

Speaker 0

Little land noise.

Speaker 0

So then finally, I'm like, okay.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

Peer pressure.

Speaker 0

And I started playing, and, oh my gosh, it was so much fun.

Speaker 0

It was just it was just goofy, goofy fun.

Speaker 0

And, I mean, like, people were barely drinking, and and I haven't, been drinking this year, so I was completely sober.

Speaker 0

And it was just so childlike and fun and free and goofy and, you know, making up our rules as we go along and and all this stuff.

Speaker 0

And, you know, people were kinda good at it.

Speaker 0

I was so so at it if I'm that's being generous of my assessment of it.

Speaker 0

So, anyway, so I'm like, oh, this is great.

Speaker 0

You know, my feet don't hurt too badly.

Speaker 0

Like, I'm feeling good.

Speaker 0

往上。

Up.

Speaker 0

Kiss of death.

Speaker 0

So, you know, in, like, the final three minutes, this, the ball comes over toward me toward my left side, and I try to kick it with my left leg, which is my bad knee.

Speaker 0

And I nearly fell over, and I my knee just kinda locked out.

Speaker 0

And, thankfully, my friend Sheila was right next to me, so I was able to lean on her so I didn't fall to the ground.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And oh, it just janked up my knee.

Speaker 0

Oh.

Speaker 0

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

And I was like, I knew it.

Speaker 0

I knew it.

Speaker 0

你

Do

Speaker 1

you have a PT appointment set up?

Speaker 0

I do not because then so then the next morning, go play pickleball because, of course, that's what I do.

Speaker 0

Right.

Speaker 0

And I wore a knee brace.

Speaker 0

And but, I mean, I was kinda hobbled on the court.

Speaker 0

But then I stopped.

Speaker 0

I I'm a member of Planet Fitness, and they have these hydromassage chairs.

Speaker 0

And I sat on that thing, and it worked a miracle.

Speaker 3

Wow.

Speaker 3

它

It

Speaker 0

I mean and then I took it easy.

Speaker 0

You know, I watched the the game on the soccer game the World Cup game on Saturday, so I was sitting for quite a while.

Speaker 0

And then, I mean, by the afternoon, my knee it was barely noticeable that anything was wrong with it.

Speaker 1

That's amazing.

Speaker 0

It was true.

Speaker 0

I mean great.

Speaker 0

Because I also was catastrophizing at pickleball on Saturday.

Speaker 0

I'm like, this is it.

Speaker 0

I brought this on myself.

Speaker 0

I knew I was gonna do that.

Speaker 1

Like Right.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

确实。

Right.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 1

We do that.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And I oh, I mean, I I I pretty much I think I have a PhD in catastrophizing.

Speaker 0

Like, it just

Speaker 1

I'm right there with you.

Speaker 1

I really am.

Speaker 1

我真的

I really

Speaker 4

懂。

am.

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So, anyway, so, you know, I'm I'm I had not gotten back to running.

Speaker 0

I tried it, and it it still sort of was not my knee was not happy with it, but I have been content walking and doing other things.

Speaker 0

And, you know, don't take pickleball away from me, universe.

Speaker 0

I need pickleball in

Speaker 1

没错。

my Right.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

It's so funny that you're at a point where you're kinda prioritizing pickleball over running, aren't you?

Speaker 1

Like, I mean, you had to, you know I am.

Speaker 1

Clean.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And it's all because of the social aspect of it.

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So and then, I mean, then I had a fabulous I swam for an hour on Sunday because I usually, I swim at the pond and then go straight to play pickleball, but I'm like, okay.

Speaker 0

I'll play it smart.

Speaker 0

I won't play pickleball today.

Speaker 0

So swam for longer than usual, and the water was the best it's been all year.

Speaker 0

It was just

Speaker 1

Oh, it's so nice.

Speaker 0

Heaven.

Speaker 0

Oh my goodness.

Speaker 0

Oh my goodness.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So alright.

Speaker 0

So that's my saga.

Speaker 0

Boohoo me.

Speaker 0

But I'm it all ends

Speaker 1

up seemed like a fairly quick recovery and hopefully full recovery, you know, soon.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对

Yes.

Speaker 0

对

Yes.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So and gosh.

Speaker 0

It was just to reiterate, it was just stupid fun and in the best possible way.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That's so great.

Speaker 0

Silly silliness.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Excellent.

Speaker 3

Excellent.

Speaker 0

So Yeah.

Speaker 0

So but today, we are talking to women who prioritize running.

Speaker 0

The topic is, stepping up to a new race distance, and we're gonna start by talking to a coach and then three regular women runners.

Speaker 0

People who aren't watching on YouTube can can't see that I'm doing air quotes around that.

Speaker 0

So we're gonna talk to one who took on our first half marathon, then a gal who tackled her first marathon, then talk to a woman who did her first 100 miler.

Speaker 0

And the coach we'll be talking to after this brief sponsor break is someone who might be familiar to a lot of longtime another mother runner folks.

Speaker 0

It's Christy Scott who oversaw a lot of AMR strength and ultramarathon training programs.

Speaker 0

Christy is a longtime running coach and personal trainer based in Huntsville, Alabama, and she herself is an avid ultrarunner.

Speaker 0

So Christy will join us when we come back.

Speaker 0

I am learning so much with Feisty, including new for me brands like Cozy Earth.

Speaker 0

Cozy Earth

Cozy Earth was founded by a dad of three who believes that rest matters, a philosophy I fully embrace.

Speaker 0

Turns out this guy, Tyler, had dreamed of making the softest sheets since he was a kid.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

But you go, Tyler, because that's exactly what Cozy Earth does, making ultra soft temperature regulating bedding and loungewear.

Speaker 0

Cozy Earth

Cozy Earth bamboo sheets are crafted from 100% bamboo viscous, and they are a dream to sleep on, especially on a hot summer night.

Speaker 0

The first thing I noticed when I got between the sheets is how buttery soft and silky smooth they are.

Speaker 0

Then I quickly realized they also felt cool to the touch, even near where Augie, my incinerator hot French bulldog, was nestled.

Speaker 0

The premium bamboo viscous fabric is naturally temperature regulating, so it keeps you cool when it's warm out and cozy when it's not.

Speaker 0

As a gal who sweats nearly as much at night as I do on a run, these sheets are magic.

Speaker 0

Cozy Earth

Cozy Earth stands behind everything they make with an incredible ten year warranty and one hundred nights of hassle free returns on bedding.

Speaker 0

Let me repeat.

Speaker 0

You have one hundred nights to see if these cool and luxe sheets are as dreamy for you as they are for me.

Speaker 0

They're made from viscous from bamboo, breathable, soft, and built for summer.

Like I said recently on this show, Feisty is introducing me to so many great things, including Hettas running shoes.

Speaker 0

Hettas

Hettas is a Canadian brand that only makes running shoes for women.

Speaker 0

In partnership with the university, the Hettas folks are advancing research focused on women's biomechanics and performance.

Speaker 0

Hettas shoes are built specifically for women, grounded in evidence, and tested in motion.

Speaker 0

Most running shoe outsoles start breaking down within a few 100 kilometers.

Speaker 0

Hettas took a different approach with the Alma line, a cast polyurethane outsole instead of standard rubber.

Speaker 0

It's roughly double the abrasion resistance of traditional rubber, and it's not just a lab claim.

Speaker 0

Two elite runners put over a thousand kilometers on a single pair each, one hitting 1,600 kilometers and the other 1,900 before wearing through.

Speaker 0

That's a lot of pavement without losing your footing.

Speaker 0

And let me do the conversion for you.

Speaker 0

That's one runner going nearly 1,000 miles and the other nearly 1,200 miles.

Speaker 1

So, Christy, we're gonna ask you the question we ask everyone at the start, which is tell us about your running background.

Speaker 5

Oh, I have run kind of almost my whole life.

Speaker 5

I was one of those weird kids that like in middle school, I would like go over to the track and run for no reason.

Speaker 5

I was like, I don't know where that came from.

Speaker 5

Neither one of my parents were runners.

Speaker 5

I just was like, hey, we live by a school.

Speaker 5

I think I'm gonna go run on that track.

Speaker 5

And then, I don't know, it stuck.

Speaker 5

I've always been very interested in fitness.

Speaker 5

And then when my second child was born, he is now 26, that is when I really got into it and started running races and training and actually learning about it.

Speaker 5

So I started with the normal five Ks, 10 Ks, half marathon, and just kinda built up and went from there.

Speaker 5

I've run consistently for the last twenty six years.

Speaker 1

Nice.

Speaker 1

Very nice and relatable.

Speaker 1

So and tell us about your professional background.

Speaker 5

I have, like I said, always been interested in fitness, but I went the first route for college was as an accounting major because that was the sensible thing to do.

Speaker 5

It's very responsible.

Speaker 5

I could get a steady job.

Speaker 5

And then I got a job doing it, I was like, oh my god.

Speaker 5

不行。

No.

Speaker 5

This is not for me.

Speaker 5

And so I went and talked to my college adviser, and I said, I can't do this for the rest of my life.

Speaker 5

And he said, what are you interested in?

Speaker 5

I'm like, I'm really interested in fitness, but I have no idea what I'm gonna do with it.

Speaker 5

Because at this time, it wasn't that popular.

Speaker 5

Nowadays, it's a lot different.

Speaker 5

But and we were like, okay.

Speaker 5

Well, let's switch over and do a major in exercise science and a minor in business because I had so much business credit.

Speaker 5

And my first class, I was like, oh my gosh.

Speaker 5

This is where I was meant to be.

Speaker 5

I I loved going to school.

Speaker 5

I loved the learning, and I just, like, dove in.

Speaker 5

And I started working at a gym.

Speaker 5

I left my accounting job to go work as the front desk manager at a gym.

Speaker 5

My husband loved that.

Speaker 5

And the rest is history.

Speaker 5

I just I got my personal training certification and started training people, and that was, whew, 28 ago.

Speaker 0

好的。

K.

Speaker 1

是的。

So yeah.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

So those those kind of collided with when you then you when you started doing your first races.

Speaker 0

That's interesting.

Speaker 5

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 5

Pretty close.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So okay.

Speaker 0

So you already indicated that, you know, you did the natural progression five k, 10 k, that type of thing.

Speaker 0

So are there guidelines you give to someone who's taking on a longer race distance for the first time, such as what prerequisites should a runner have before making the shift, say, 10 milers and half marathoners up to the marathon, that sort of thing.

Speaker 5

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 5

You know, we would love, as coaches, for people to follow a very natural progression of doing things in an orderly way, like do some five k's and then do some 10 k's and then maybe try a 10 miler and then a half marathon and then gradually go up from there.

Speaker 5

But I can tell you that there are some people I have some good friends who their first race was a marathon.

Speaker 5

And then after they did the marathon, they're like, I wanna run a 100 miles.

Speaker 5

And they did, and they were successful at it.

Speaker 5

But they were also lifelong athletes, so they had a really strong base.

Speaker 5

And if you've got a really strong base, that can make a big difference.

Speaker 5

You know?

Speaker 5

If you were an athlete your whole life, it's gonna be easier for you to jump into longer races sooner than someone else.

Speaker 0

Interesting.

Speaker 0

对。

Uh-huh.

Speaker 5

To do it safely, we really like to, you know, start out slowly.

Speaker 5

And I like I always have people start like, they start their running journey.

Speaker 5

I'm having them start with, like, thirty second run intervals with their walks.

Speaker 5

That's it.

Speaker 5

Just get your body used to it.

Speaker 5

Your muscles will adapt very quickly.

Speaker 5

It's your connective tissue that takes longer.

Speaker 5

You know, your tendons and ligaments and all of that stuff takes a while.

Speaker 5

So I always tell her, you know, you should feel like you could do more.

Speaker 5

If you feel like you could do more at the end of a training session, we've done it right.

Speaker 5

You need to just calm down and let's take this very gradually.

Speaker 5

But I love for people to start out with, like, picking a five k to target.

Speaker 5

And then once we've got past that, we'll say, okay.

Speaker 5

You know, how do you feel about a 10 k?

Speaker 5

And we can very gradually start to build up.

Speaker 5

I really like for people to have, you know, at least, like, a solid year of base building before they do something longer, even like a half marathon, just because I really want to make sure their bodies are adapted and they're not gonna go out and injure themselves.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Do you have a lot of your clients who are taking on a new race distance for the first time?

Speaker 1

And when that happens, do you approach it differently than if you're working with an athlete who's working for a PR at a particular distance?

Speaker 5

Oh, absolutely.

Speaker 5

I think, you know, one of the biggest things that we talk about is their why.

Speaker 5

Why do you want to go and run a marathon?

Speaker 5

Why do you want to go and run a 100 miles?

Speaker 5

Is it just because it sounds kinda cool?

Speaker 5

Well, you know, everybody else is doing it.

Speaker 5

And I feel like some of the, like, longer distances, especially the ultras, it's kinda gotten that way.

Speaker 5

Like, I saw this really cool race, and everyone else is doing it.

Speaker 5

Well, what about you?

Speaker 5

Can you commit your time and your energy?

Speaker 5

And when motivation is low, which it will be very often, will you still get out and do that training?

Speaker 5

So, you know, everybody's everybody's different, and I have to approach them very individually and and see again, their why sometimes is the biggest thing is that will either deter them or push them.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Makes sense.

Speaker 1

So when you're working with clients, what are some crucial steps for setting themselves up for success when they are training for a new distance?

Speaker 5

Consistency is always my number one.

Speaker 5

You have got to be consistent.

Speaker 5

You can't run three times this week and none next week.

Speaker 5

Like, it's got to be some consistency.

Speaker 5

And it doesn't have to be perfect.

Speaker 5

It has I always tell everybody, something is better than nothing.

Speaker 5

So if I have a five mile run on your schedule and you're like, I don't have time for five miles.

Speaker 5

I'm just not gonna go that's not gonna cut it.

Speaker 5

Go do two miles.

Speaker 5

If that's what you have time for, go do it.

Speaker 5

Just be consistent and get your body adapted to that repetitive like, I'm doing this no matter how much time I have.

Speaker 5

I mean, that's I do that with strength training too.

Speaker 5

I'm like, if you don't have time to do three sets of everything, go do one set of everything.

Speaker 5

It's better than not doing anything at all.

Speaker 5

So consistency to me is the number one most important thing.

Speaker 0

So for people who are kinda numbers oriented, going back to your accounting background perhaps, like like, how much adherence to a program are you hoping to see?

Speaker 0

Because I think sometimes in this age of perfectionism, people think, oh, I gotta get a 100%.

Speaker 0

I have to get a gold star every day.

Speaker 5

没错。

Sure.

Speaker 5

I would love to see 80% would be would be pretty great.

Speaker 2

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 5

That's enough to keep you from getting injured because that's the consistency is not only for motivation and base building, but it's for injury prevention.

Speaker 5

Your body needs that time to adapt and I'm sorry.

Speaker 5

The consistency is is what's gonna help them get there safely.

Speaker 3

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 3

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So okay.

Speaker 0

So we got the the body, pieces in play perhaps.

Speaker 0

What's the best mindset someone can have when training for a longer distance for the first time?

Speaker 0

I mean, nerves and anticipation can play tricks with one's mind.

Speaker 5

Always.

Speaker 5

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 5

The training to me is the hardest part of the whole thing.

Speaker 5

It's not the race.

Speaker 5

People get really hung up about the race and they're like, I'm worried about the race.

Speaker 5

I'm like, girl girl, guy, whoever.

Speaker 5

If you have done your training consistently, the race is the celebration.

Speaker 5

There's nothing to worry about at the race.

Speaker 5

If you've done consistent training and gotten yourself out there, you go out on race day, and that's the party that you've been planning for.

Speaker 2

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 5

So, you know, that's the biggest thing is not letting people get so hung up on what's coming up, you know, late or, like, this is six weeks away, and I'm already worried about it.

Speaker 5

Worry about what you're doing this week.

Speaker 5

And then next week, we'll worry about what you're doing next week.

Speaker 5

And don't don't look at your schedule.

Speaker 5

You I'm sure y'all have heard people look at their schedule, and they're like, five weeks from now, I have to run 20 miles?

Speaker 5

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 5

How am I gonna do that?

Speaker 5

Well, in five weeks, we'll worry about that.

Speaker 5

对。

So Mhmm.

Speaker 5

Deal with today and what you have to do this week, and then we'll we'll peace out the rest of it as we go.

Speaker 5

Don't don't get ahead of yourself.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And then, actually, on race day, what kind of advice do you give people who are starting they're on the start line of their, you know, new longer distance.

Speaker 1

What's what's your go to advice there?

Speaker 5

I mean, it it goes right back to what we've just talked about.

Speaker 5

That's the celebration.

Speaker 5

Enjoy the experience.

Speaker 5

Don't get you know, and again, it goes back to are they training to complete a distance or are they training for a PR?

Speaker 5

Those are gonna be a little different mindsets.

Speaker 5

If you're training to complete the distance, you're there to enjoy the experience.

Speaker 5

You control the controllables.

Speaker 5

You have no control over the weather or or what things are gonna happen on the course, but you have control over everything you have trained for, your gear, your fueling, all of those things.

Speaker 5

So control the controllables.

Speaker 5

And when you get to a start day, just enjoy the experience and be thankful that you're there.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

And what advice do you give people when, something does go awry during the race itself?

Speaker 0

I mean, so, I don't know, their their hamstring suddenly starts squawking at them at mile, you know, eight of a half marathon.

Speaker 0

What what do you tell those people to do?

Speaker 5

Well, usually, just, you know, if they have to walk for a second, then walk for a second.

Speaker 5

Maybe you need fueling.

Speaker 5

A lot of times, people don't realize how important their fueling is.

Speaker 5

And, like, if you're really low on your carbs, your body could be reacting in those different ways.

Speaker 5

They think carbs are you know, they're just about the energy portion, but they're not.

Speaker 5

They're actually about how your body is functioning as a whole.

Speaker 5

So sometimes it could just be, hey.

Speaker 5

You know what?

Speaker 5

If that starts to happen, take a walk, grab a gel, and just and regroup, you know, and just and go from there.

Speaker 5

Don't your race isn't over.

Speaker 5

There's gonna be the longer the distance is, the more likely you are to have some dark moments.

Speaker 5

And, you know, and just know that they're gonna come and that you'll be fine.

Speaker 5

You went through dark moments when you were training, so you'll be okay.

Speaker 5

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 5

Just regroup.

Speaker 5

Take a walk.

Speaker 5

Take a gel.

Speaker 3

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 5

And you may be okay.

Speaker 5

It may be worse.

Speaker 5

But, I mean, all you can do is, again, control what you have control of.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And since you are there in your workout room, I have to ask you, what role should strength training play when stepping up to a longer distance?

Speaker 5

Sarah, you know me.

Speaker 5

It is it is absolutely of utmost importance.

Speaker 5

And the longer the distance is, I think the more important it is just to prepare your body for all the breakdown that you're gonna be doing to it, not only through training, but through the race itself.

Speaker 5

And as we get older, it gets even more and more important because we lose muscle mass, you know, as we age.

Speaker 5

And those muscles people are so worried, oh, muscles are gonna make me slower.

Speaker 5

I promise you they're not.

Speaker 5

They're they're gonna help you they're gonna help you move faster up a hill.

Speaker 5

They're gonna help you control things on a downhill.

Speaker 5

They're gonna help you keep good posture when you start to fatigue.

Speaker 5

I mean, it's it's so it encompasses everything you do with racing.

Speaker 5

And, thankfully, more and more runners are realizing the importance of it.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Well, Christy, thank you so much for joining us, and I know that some of our listeners are very excited to see you in Duluth in October.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

At the Grand Traverse.

Speaker 0

So have a fantastic time.

Speaker 5

Oh, we absolutely will.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Thank you.

Speaker 0

再见。

Bye bye.

Speaker 5

Thank you.

Speaker 5

再见。

Bye.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Let's welcome our first real life runner who stepped up to her new for her race distance.

Speaker 0

Her name will sound slightly familiar as she has the same last name as our last guest as she is coach Christy Scott's daughter, Courtney Scott.

Speaker 0

Courtney, who works in social media management, ran her debut half marathon in December 2024.

Speaker 0

Thanks for joining us, Courtney.

Speaker 4

Thank you for having me.

Speaker 1

So, Courtney, tell us a little bit about your running bra background, sorry, prior to training for your half marathon.

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

So as you said, Christy is my mom.

Speaker 4

So I grew up around the running world.

Speaker 4

She's been doing it my whole life.

Speaker 4

And so did a lot of five k's growing up.

Speaker 4

My first ever job was at a local running store.

Speaker 4

I worked there from ages 16 to 21.

Speaker 4

So it's something I've just always been around.

Speaker 4

I've always enjoyed it and kind of used it as an outlet, you know, to decompress.

Speaker 4

That's my me time.

Speaker 4

So it's just it's something I've kind of always known, always been around.

Speaker 0

Nice.

Speaker 0

So before we get to that December 2024, half marathon, could you share a bit about your health background as you had a rough go of it at the start of this decade, I know?

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

So I think it was kind of end of twenty eighteen.

Speaker 4

So that same year I did my first half marathon, I it was it was a long process, but I ended up getting diagnosed with lupus.

Speaker 4

And then at the time, it was stage four kidney disease and failure.

Speaker 4

Came out of nowhere.

Speaker 4

We weren't really sure what was happening.

Speaker 4

I was 22, 23 at the time.

Speaker 4

So I was young, living across the country from all of my family and went through that whole process, did some rounds of chemotherapy, did dialysis.

Speaker 4

And then we got to the point where I was told the only option we had was a kidney transplant.

Speaker 4

That was the only thing that was going to keep me kind of alive.

Speaker 4

So we started that process and my health, you know, a lot changed for my health.

Speaker 4

My body was just shutting down.

Speaker 4

That stage four progressed into stage five.

Speaker 4

I was in complete failure and shut down.

Speaker 4

And during that time, I was also diagnosed with breast cancer.

Speaker 4

So there was a lot being thrown at me all at once.

Speaker 4

And my my mom, Christy, was actually my donor.

Speaker 4

Oh.

Speaker 4

So she ended up her and my dad drove from Alabama to Phoenix.

Speaker 0

Wow.

Speaker 4

Packed up their whole life and moved in with me to my one bedroom apartment and kind of got me through a few months of treatments and because I couldn't do anything for myself.

Speaker 4

And then, yeah, I had my transplant in April 2020.

Speaker 4

And then April 2021, I had a double mastectomy for my breast cancer.

Speaker 4

It was just kinda it was a lot all at once.

Speaker 4

而且

And

Speaker 0

Sure was.

Speaker 4

I think all of that before age, like, 27 or so.

Speaker 4

But Oh,

Speaker 2

yeah.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

So that definitely changed the way I approached.

Speaker 4

I mean, everything, you know, running was something I was told I would not be able to do Oh.

Speaker 4

Ever ever again, really, or added to a very yeah.

Speaker 4

I was I mean, that's what my medical team had initially said.

Speaker 4

They were like, I probably wouldn't plan on doing anything short of maybe you can do a five k.

Speaker 4

Maybe.

Speaker 4

Wow.

Speaker 4

But there's really not a high chance.

Speaker 4

Just because of my particular case, there were a lot of kind of there were a lot of different things going into it aside from just, you know, the lupus and everything else.

Speaker 4

But that was their it's kind of what they had told me, which was very I mean, it was kind of devastating to be honest because like I had mentioned, and I'm sure so many people can relate that running or regardless of what distance or pace, it's such a good outlet.

Speaker 4

And it's for me, it's kind of another form of therapy.

Speaker 4

So having that stripped away and being told you can't do that anymore was not I don't know.

Speaker 4

It was another thing to add to the list of things I had to come to terms with and figure out from there.

Speaker 0

Wow.

Speaker 0

Wow.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But we know the ending is a little different, right?

Speaker 1

We know that you ended up running a half marathon.

Speaker 1

Talk to about training and how you were able to go about it after hearing that you weren't gonna be able to run anymore.

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

So it was, I think, or mid twenty twenty four, I actually relocated back to Huntsville,

Speaker 3

就是

which is

Speaker 4

where I'm at now to be closer to my parents because they both live here.

Speaker 4

And I was trying to get my health back on track.

Speaker 4

We ran into some complications and things I just needed to kind of be back with my people who could take care of me and that having that support system.

Speaker 4

And I brought the idea up to my mom.

Speaker 4

I kind of said, I think I want to try for it.

Speaker 4

I don't know how it will go.

Speaker 4

I don't know if I can do it.

Speaker 4

So I mentioned that to her.

Speaker 4

She was totally on board with helping me out.

Speaker 4

We designed a training program that was not too overwhelming.

Speaker 4

We tried to make it more manageable.

Speaker 4

We did have to adjust a lot just because, you know, we had a lot of like I said, it was just the physical capabilities were different, so I had to manage that a little bit differently.

Speaker 4

But we put the program together.

Speaker 4

I was doing my longer runs on the weekend, shorter runs during the week.

Speaker 4

She had me doing strength training and all that good stuff.

Speaker 4

And I felt really I felt a lot more prepared than I thought I would, but I also, again, have I I mean, I'll I could talk about her all day, every day.

Speaker 4

My mom is the coolest, greatest person I ever.

Speaker 4

And Aw.

Speaker 4

So I know that was so much of that was her, not just for putting the program together, but also being there to answer any questions and just to encourage me and help me doing everything that was on the plan and adjusting where we needed to and just listening to what my body was telling me.

Speaker 1

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

Can you give an example of so often people say to listen to your body.

Speaker 0

But, I mean Mhmm.

Speaker 0

I think that takes a different form for everybody.

Speaker 0

没错。

And Yeah.

Speaker 0

You think sometimes think, well, am I really overtrained and I should take it easy, or am I just being kinda lazy today?

Speaker 0

So you know?

Speaker 0

Like and I'm not implying that you were at all.

Speaker 0

But, like, could you give an example of of, you know, kind of the form that took for you of listening to your body?

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

It was a learning curve for sure because I struggled with that a lot trying to decide, am I just being dramatic?

Speaker 4

And I don't feel like getting out on a Saturday and running eight miles in the morning, or do I really is something really is something bigger actually happening that I need to feel out?

Speaker 4

And it was it was it was hard.

Speaker 4

I I know that's not a very good not a very good answer, but for me, it was just my running for me now, I have really bad arthritis, with lupus being an autoimmune disease.

Speaker 4

Your body everything's kinda broken down.

Speaker 4

I feel a lot older than I am.

Speaker 4

And so I just kinda had to listen.

Speaker 4

If something was hurting, I would stick with it for a little bit if I was on a longer run.

Speaker 4

And I was mentally telling myself, the pain it's not pain.

Speaker 4

It's a discomfort.

Speaker 4

And I again, going back to my mom, it's always you know, you have you're always capable of so much more than you think you are.

Speaker 4

So I would keep going.

Speaker 4

And most most of the time, it would go away.

Speaker 4

And it was I just needed, you know, to get my body warmed up.

Speaker 4

But there were times where that little discomfort turned into a an ache or a pain that I I this it sounds silly, but it would just I would have to go based off of gut feeling and thinking, okay.

Speaker 4

Well, something doesn't feel quite right.

Speaker 4

And whether that meant slow, you know, changing my walk run splits to walking a little bit longer or, know, just changing maybe getting off.

Speaker 4

I know running on the sidewalk is not great, but kind of, you know, changing my environment a little bit.

Speaker 4

So I rely pretty heavily just on my gut feeling because I think, for me, that's the best way to know is just I feel like I've gotten pretty good at knowing when something is not feeling totally

Speaker 2

right.

Speaker 2

没错

That

Speaker 1

sounds sound to me.

Speaker 1

So you got through the training, and then race day arrives.

Speaker 1

I understand that the weather was not super cooperative.

Speaker 1

Tell us about that.

Speaker 4

It was not.

Speaker 4

So the the race was in December.

Speaker 2

Uh-huh.

Speaker 4

And so I fully expected it to be colder, which was fine.

Speaker 4

But watching the forecast leading up to it, it showed rain, which is not ideal.

Speaker 4

And then it got to race morning, and it was cold, but it was also really dreary.

Speaker 4

It was not a full on rain.

Speaker 4

It was that constant drizzle the entire day.

Speaker 4

And that it was yeah.

Speaker 4

It was not fun, but it kind of expected well, I wasn't expecting it to be perfect temperature, the sun shining.

Speaker 0

Uh-huh.

Speaker 4

It was it was mid mid December, and that was part of why I chose that race specifically because it was, I think, five days before my thirtieth birthday.

Speaker 4

And that was another reason for wanting to do that five not five k.

Speaker 4

It's half marathon.

Speaker 4

Sorry.

Speaker 4

Was to see if I was still capable of doing something like that, but also that was kind of my big thing before turning 30.

Speaker 4

Some people, you know, people like to do big things before they reach certain milestones and birthdays, and that just happened to be the thing I wanted to test out and see Yeah.

Speaker 4

If it was gonna work.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

所以。

So.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So and I I know you had some mental struggles during the races Mhmm.

Speaker 0

As as we all do.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So can you tell us a bit about those and how you dealt with them?

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

I think I up until the race start, I felt a lot calmer than I thought I would, which was kind of weird because I'm normally a pretty anxious person, and I get I can get myself worked up pretty easily, but we got there, you know, waist gun goes off, it starts, and then then the anxiety set in.

Speaker 4

And mentally, for me, the hardest the biggest thing that I struggled with was trying to give myself grace and knowing that I can't I know that I can't quite do the things I used to be able to do, which is totally normal.

Speaker 4

You know, that happens.

Speaker 4

It changes day to day for everyone.

Speaker 4

You might be able to do something today that you couldn't do tomorrow or, you know, if you're all things are always changing, but

Speaker 2

是的。

Mhmm.

Speaker 4

It was trying not to get frustrated with myself because in my mind, I would get really caught up in trying to push myself going out too fast.

Speaker 4

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 4

Thinking, oh, I feel fine.

Speaker 4

It's all good.

Speaker 4

And then it hit me probably I think it was before mile three, and I was completely off my planned splits.

Speaker 4

So I was walking a lot more than I thought I was gonna have to, and I just I was trying not to get frustrated and listening to my body.

Speaker 4

But I think mentally, the biggest thing was just having to come to terms with the fact that I and this is really silly to say it out loud, but if people were to look at me and say, oh, she's she's young ish.

Speaker 4

You know, she's 30 years old, looks relatively athletic.

Speaker 4

We we were expecting you to do better or be faster, whatever it was, and then having to kind me knowing, yeah, well, there's a lot behind the scenes that other people aren't seeing that you don't know, and I know you should not care what other people think.

Speaker 4

And I say I don't, but there's always a little point, you know,

Speaker 2

a little or there's always

Speaker 4

a little part in the back of my mind that definitely considers that.

Speaker 4

但是

But

Speaker 0

明白。

Mhmm.

Speaker 4

That was the biggest thing for me is just my body not being able to push my body as much as I thought I was going to be able to.

Speaker 4

And so there was just a lot of flip flop of, well, I think I can do it, and I'm I'm doing it, but it just looks a lot different than what I was imagining.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

And very frustrating, but also having to not be frustrated and

Speaker 2

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 4

Give myself credit and grace for being there, showing up, and that was I don't think I really went into it with a time goal.

Speaker 4

My whole thing was I signed up for it.

Speaker 4

I have to finish it.

Speaker 2

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 4

That was kind of what it got to.

Speaker 4

And so I I finished.

Speaker 4

Not not anything super impressive time wise.

Speaker 4

But to me, I at the end, it I realized that the time didn't matter.

Speaker 0

I I mean

Speaker 4

I did it.

Speaker 0

I hope you, you know, sent a message to those doctors in Arizona and showed them a picture of you with your half marathon medal.

Speaker 0

I mean, come on.

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

It was and that's also a thing.

Speaker 4

I mean, I know so many people are like this, but I am very motivated by doubt from others.

Speaker 4

So I've been that way since I was young.

Speaker 4

If somebody tells me I can't do something, I'm gonna do everything I can in my power to do it to kind of not to necessarily prove them wrong, but I feel like that doubt, I always take it really personally, and then it's internalized.

Speaker 4

So the whole thing with the half marathon was proving it to myself.

Speaker 4

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 4

And, I mean, and a little bit to my doctors.

Speaker 4

But, you know, I say it was mostly for myself just to say, yeah.

Speaker 4

Things are different.

Speaker 4

Your body's not what it used to be.

Speaker 4

There's a lot of hurdles we had to overcome, but you you can still do it.

Speaker 4

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 4

There's you can do a lot more than I I feel like so many people are like that.

Speaker 4

We can do a lot more than we give ourselves credit for.

Speaker 4

Just have to kind of you have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone, and it's not it's not always fun.

Speaker 4

But I I think it's and you don't realize that until the end, but it was so worth it.

Speaker 0

对

Yeah.

Speaker 4

So I was very happy I did it.

Speaker 0

对

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Well, we applaud you, and and thank you so much for sharing your story with us, Courtney.

Speaker 0

We wish you all the best.

Speaker 4

Thank you.

Speaker 4

Thank you so much.

Speaker 0

Thank you.

Speaker 0

Our next guest is Hillary Parker who ran her first marathon in October 2025.

Speaker 0

Hillary is the director of business partnerships at the YMCA in Huntsville, and she is the mom of two very young sons.

Speaker 0

So glad you could join us.

Speaker 0

Hillary, welcome.

Speaker 2

Thank you so much for having me.

Speaker 2

I'm so excited.

Speaker 1

Hillary, tell us a little bit about your running background.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I started running in I started running recreationally in college.

Speaker 2

I ran in high school.

Speaker 2

I played sports.

Speaker 2

So, you know, running was a form of punishment at that point.

Speaker 2

And then I got to college and started just running honestly to combat the freshman 15 or, you know, however much weight you they say you're gonna you're gonna gain your freshman year.

Speaker 2

And I started running mostly just because it was accessible.

Speaker 2

So, like, I just had to put on a pair of shoes, put on some shorts, and I could just go.

Speaker 2

And so I started then, and then I'm when I moved to Huntsville about ten years ago, I worked at a athletic store, and one of my coworkers was a big runner.

Speaker 2

And Huntsville has a wonderful running community.

Speaker 2

Are so many races, so many run clubs, so much opportunity for running.

Speaker 2

And so hearing him talk about it, you know, just reignited that love for running for me, and, that was really when I moved to Huntsville was really when I started racing and, really getting into it.

Speaker 1

真好。

Nice.

Speaker 1

真好。

Nice.

Speaker 1

真好。

Nice.

Speaker 1

And talk to us a little bit about, you know, the races that you did do prior to your first your first marathon last fall.

Speaker 2

So I started, of course, with five k's.

Speaker 2

I mean, that was easy.

Speaker 2

It was three miles.

Speaker 2

It was attainable.

Speaker 2

There were plenty of them.

Speaker 2

That was easy for me.

Speaker 2

And, then I started doing a few 10 Ks.

Speaker 2

I think probably the first 10 K I did, there's one, in Huntsville on Memorial Day called Cotton Row.

Speaker 2

And, I've done Cotton Row.

Speaker 2

I was trying to think the other day how many times I've done it.

Speaker 2

I mean, it's probably been seven or eight years.

Speaker 2

It's just a a good traditional it's Memorial Day, so you're running Cotton Row.

Speaker 2

That was really my first 10 k, and then I decided train for a half marathon.

Speaker 2

And my first half marathon was I was so anxious, so nervous.

Speaker 2

I had no running plan, no coach, no, I no plan, no strategy.

Speaker 2

I just kinda went out there and ran a little bit and then went and did my first half marathon.

Speaker 2

And that was in Nashville.

Speaker 2

It was the rock and roll half.

Speaker 2

I mean, I was so slow, but, you know, I finished it, and I had my medal, and I was so proud.

Speaker 2

And so I did, I went back and looked.

Speaker 2

I had ran seven half marathons before, my first marathon.

Speaker 2

And so that's still probably my favorite distance is the half.

Speaker 2

But, yeah, I'm and I would like to know.

Speaker 2

I am a roadrunner.

Speaker 2

I am not a trail runner.

Speaker 2

I have never ran trails.

Speaker 2

That is super intimidating to me.

Speaker 2

不是。

Not.

Speaker 2

I'm nowhere in that world.

Speaker 0

Oh, it's it's it's fine.

Speaker 0

It's fine.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

So so, Hillary, if I'm doing the math correctly, your boys were basically one and four when you opted to take is that right?

Speaker 2

They were would have been one and three.

Speaker 0

Oh, oh, oh, even more daunting Yeah.

Speaker 0

When you opted to take on a marathon.

Speaker 0

So why did you decide to add that challenge to your plate?

Speaker 2

Great question.

Speaker 2

Great question.

Speaker 2

Well, if I'm being totally honest, I unexpectedly became a single mom and got a divorce and, I had a lot of stuff happening in my life that I could not control.

Speaker 2

And I did I'm very type A.

Speaker 2

I like to control things.

Speaker 2

And so, running has always been, and especially in the past few years, has been a way for me to not think about my thoughts if I don't want to because I'm just so focused on, you know, not trying to die.

Speaker 2

And so I was like, you know what?

Speaker 2

I've done so many halves at this point.

Speaker 2

Why not?

Speaker 2

Why not try?

Speaker 2

I've always kinda thought about a marathon.

Speaker 2

And, you know, of course, the more halves I do, the more I think I went at the end.

Speaker 2

Maybe I could do that again, you know, just turn around and do the whole thing again.

Speaker 2

It doesn't seem so daunting.

Speaker 2

And so, yeah, at that point in my life, I was like, it's already chaotic enough.

Speaker 2

I'll just throw in one more thing, but I'll have a little bit of control in this aspect.

Speaker 1

I I love that.

Speaker 1

I I really do.

Speaker 1

I think that's fantastic.

Speaker 1

What a great way to get your feet back underneath yourself, you know?

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So, Christy was your coach.

Speaker 1

Is that correct?

Speaker 2

没错。

She was.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

And what made you decide to hire a coach for the training?

Speaker 2

Kind of sort of the same as a half marathon.

Speaker 2

I mean, I had never done a marathon before, and I had no idea where to start.

Speaker 2

I had no idea, this was my and this was my very first time ever having a running coach.

Speaker 2

I had done seven half marathons and just kinda trial and error figured out what I should do and shouldn't do.

Speaker 2

And I knew that running 26 miles was too long.

Speaker 2

I knew I could get really hurt really fast if I didn't do this the right way.

Speaker 2

And like you said, I had small kids.

Speaker 2

I it was the smart thing to do.

Speaker 2

And I I knew Christy, and I knew her background, and and I thought, you know, if I trusted her mostly.

Speaker 2

And I thought, okay.

Speaker 2

If someone's going to be able to get me through to do this marathon, it's gonna be her.

Speaker 0

Excellent.

Speaker 0

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So you chose a full marathon, and we've established that you live in Alabama.

Speaker 0

So were you concerned about training long distances in the heat and humidity?

Speaker 2

You know what's so funny is I never thought about that.

Speaker 2

And I, you know, that it's such a, like, duh question.

Speaker 2

But I was so, I think I was just like, yeah.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna do a marathon.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna do it, and I'm gonna sign up, and that sounds great.

Speaker 2

And I just was it was such a spontaneous decision.

Speaker 2

I did not think about that.

Speaker 2

But I wish you could go back to all of the, the video messages between Christy and I during that time because it was June and July.

Speaker 2

I looked back at my training.

Speaker 2

We started training in June.

Speaker 2

And like you said, it's, you know, 100 degrees.

Speaker 2

The humidity's 100%.

Speaker 2

It is hot in Alabama.

Speaker 2

And so and I had kids, so I couldn't get get up first thing in the morning and go train.

Speaker 2

That was not possible.

Speaker 2

So I was training in the afternoons most of the time.

Speaker 2

所以

And so

Speaker 0

I would I

Speaker 2

would tell Christy all the time, I hate this.

Speaker 2

I don't wanna do this.

Speaker 2

It's so hot.

Speaker 2

Why am I why did I think this was a good idea?

Speaker 2

I mean, it was constant complaining, and she would always say, When you do your fall race, you're gonna re like, what did she say?

Speaker 2

She says, You're going to, you know, remember this, and it's gonna make you better and faster and stronger.

Speaker 2

And at the time, I was like, Whatever.
