I think the potential of AgenTic is to rethink how work gets done overall.

Speaker 0

It challenges all sorts of traditional orthodoxies around how organizations execute the work at hand.

Speaker 1

That's Jason Gerzadis, CEO of Deloitte US, talking about the transformational potential of Agentic AI.

Speaker 1

Join him later to learn why agents are a game changer for businesses across industries.

Speaker 2

I might have chemical burns on my tongue.

Speaker 2

Let's just start there.

Speaker 2

Don't be alarmed, Jack.

Speaker 3

Oh, no.

Speaker 2

This is the Baron Streetwise podcast.

Speaker 2

I'm Jack Howe.

Speaker 2

Listening in, our audio producer, Jackson Cantrell.

Speaker 2

This is a fireball situation.

Speaker 2

And, as as you know, I've developed a little bit of a problem with the fireballs.

Speaker 3

And to to make this clear, this isn't the little bottles that they sell at the gas station.

Speaker 3

This is the candy.

Speaker 2

没错。

That that's right.

Speaker 2

That's an important thing to lay down right from the beginning.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

A colleague brought in a big canister of the candies, and I started popping, like, a couple a day, and I'm up to, let's say, five.

Speaker 2

I'm not if after five, I I'm not counting.

Speaker 2

And you can get a little bit numb after a while.

Speaker 2

So I was looking up whether like, I I looked up at can you have too many fireballs?

Speaker 2

And there's something the heat comes from something called cap capsaicin.

Speaker 2

Cap,

Cap I might not be pronouncing that right.

Speaker 3

Capsaicin, I think.

Speaker 3

You you went on to WebMD about your fireball habit.

Speaker 2

So I went to the emergency room.

Speaker 2

没有。

No.

Speaker 2

I yeah.

Speaker 2

I just on the Internet, and, it comes from, Peppers, and that's where the heat comes from.

Speaker 3

And it said, yeah.

Speaker 3

You know, sometimes you

Speaker 2

have you might have to take a break.

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 2

So I took a day off, but I'm back.

Speaker 2

This episode is not just about fireballs, although I am going to talk about a fireball related stock recommendation that comes from Wall Street.

Speaker 2

Let's say a food coloring related recommendation.

Speaker 2

Mostly, we're gonna talk after that about the 10 cheapest stocks in the S and P 500.

Speaker 3

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 3

I thought you just said stocks were we we did that stocks are expensive last week.

Speaker 2

That's not inconsistent.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

They can I said the market is more expensive than it looks, and I gave you some reasons?

Speaker 2

But these are the stocks that are the cheapest in the market.

Speaker 2

And, really, when I say the cheapest, it's a screen I ran for price earnings ratios, and that's not the be all, end all of whether a stock is cheap.

Speaker 2

I like to look once in a while for the things that are the most broken in the stock market and try to figure out why they're broken and whether they're gonna stay broken.

Speaker 2

And I think some of the returns we're gonna talk about might surprise you.

Speaker 2

Just as a as a teaser, the cheapest on the list is up more than 500% over the past year.

Speaker 2

I know what you're thinking.

Speaker 2

Doesn't that mean it's no longer in the cheap category?

Speaker 2

Well, no.

Speaker 2

It it doesn't mean that.

Speaker 2

You'll you'll be surprised, like I said.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

Sensient Technologies.

Speaker 2

Sensient Technologies.

Speaker 2

The ticker there is SXT.

Speaker 2

UBS initiated coverage of that company and predicted 30% upside for stockholders.

Speaker 2

This is a small cap company.

Speaker 2

The past decade's returns have been pretty disappointing, but there's this sweeping movement afoot now to replace artificial dyes and foods with natural ones.

Speaker 2

And there is good money to be made in that.

Speaker 2

What happens is the natural stuff isn't as vibrant as the artificial stuff, so it takes eight to 10 times as much of it to do the job.

Speaker 2

And Sentient is poised to cash in on that new volume.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

I guess their options are either swap out the dye and use more of it, or we we end up with a great beigeoning of all

Speaker 2

of our you take out the, the vibrant the vibe right.

Speaker 2

Well, it's funny you say that because if you've ever seen a box of, Froot Loops spelled f r o o t, Froot Loops, but not here in The US, in Canada.

Speaker 2

And they they show sometimes pictures side by side with a bowl of American Froot Loops and Canadian.

Speaker 2

And the Canadian ones, they they've gotten rid of the artificial colors up there, and they look like they're the color of, you know those Terra chips where the chips are made the chips are made from, like, sweet potatoes?

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

They look like vegetables.

Speaker 2

And it should they just changed the name to root vegetable loops because that's what it looks like.

Speaker 2

And that might fly in Canada, but I don't think you're gonna be able to sell earthy looking breakfast cereal like that in The US.

Speaker 2

So the challenge for manufacturers is you gotta figure out a way to do this and still keep your your food popping for the people who like those bright colors.

Speaker 2

But we're getting ahead of ourselves.

Speaker 2

The sweet heat marbles that have stolen my free will, my fireballs, they contain something called red number 40.

Speaker 2

I'm sure we've all seen that.

Speaker 2

And I have heard that that could be doing meaningful harm, and I've heard that it's doing no harm at all.

Speaker 2

People are divided on the matter.

Speaker 2

Same goes for yellow number five.

Speaker 2

They're both made from petroleum.

Speaker 2

They're both approved in The US for food and drugs and cosmetics.

Speaker 2

In Europe, natural colorants have already taken over 80% of the market.

Speaker 2

But in The US, the natural stuff is only 30% of the market, but it's rising.

Speaker 2

This topic is a passionate one for many people.

Speaker 2

I wouldn't describe myself as a natural foods guy.

Speaker 2

My wife likes to stock our kitchen with raw almond butter and artisan orange peel marmalade and flourless sprouted grain bread.

Speaker 2

And I recently felt like making a PB and J, and I saw all of that stuff.

Speaker 2

And then I ran out to the store for Jif and Smucker's and Wonder.

Speaker 3

You you should have just cut out the middleman and got an in Uncrustable.

Speaker 2

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 2

You ever see someone eat an Uncrustable while leaving the crust of the Uncrustable behind?

Speaker 2

Because that's a thing.

Speaker 2

That's happening out there.

Speaker 2

Anyhow, my point here is that I'm a bad person.

Speaker 2

In our health and human services secretary, Robert f Kennedy junior, he's made phasing out red 40 and yellow five a central part of the make America healthy again movement.

Speaker 2

I think there's momentum for that.

Speaker 2

It's always hard to pin these things down because the current administration came out with something in support of another controversial food chain chemical, one that's found in Roundup weed killer.

Speaker 2

I don't have a position on either of these things.

Speaker 2

Sometimes I try to predict which way the political winds will blow, but I'm not very good at it.

Speaker 2

But for years I've heard parents say that foods with artificial dyes make their kids hyperactive.

Speaker 2

And I believe these parents.

Speaker 2

And in Europe, products with these dyes have to carry warning labels to that effect.

Speaker 2

I've seen claims of even more worrisome health effects than that.

Speaker 2

I have no idea.

Speaker 2

There is a totally different colorant, unrelated to Red 40.

Speaker 2

It's called Red Number three.

Speaker 2

It's made from iodine, not petroleum.

Speaker 2

And that was banned for some uses starting in 1990 due to studies that linked very high doses to thyroid tumors in rats.

Speaker 2

What matters most for our purposes here is what shoppers want, and enough of them are demanding cleaner ingredients that food companies are responding.

Speaker 2

Pepsi, Nestle, JM Smucker, Hershey, Kraft Heinz, General Mills, Kellogg, These companies and more have announced plans to phase out artificial colorants mostly by the end of this year and next year.

Speaker 2

Stores like Walmart and Target are cracking down too.

Speaker 2

And California and West Virginia are banning artificial colors in school meals.

Speaker 2

You can't just flip a switch on this stuff if you're a food company.

Speaker 2

As we were saying, you don't want your breakfast cereal to come out looking too earthy and dull.

Speaker 2

You also don't want it tasting like veggies if it's supposed to taste like fruit.

Speaker 2

You have to find colorants that won't hurt your sales or fade.

Speaker 3

Although I'm a fan of beets, so I'm I'm not sure I'd mind.

Speaker 2

So anyone out there who wants to do beet loops?

Speaker 2

Well, we'll come to beets in a moment.

Speaker 2

Beets play a pivotal role here.

Speaker 2

If you're gonna make a big change like this or these massive food companies, you have to have colorant dealers whose supply chains can respond quickly to what you want.

Speaker 2

And that brings us to Sentient.

Speaker 2

It's a vertically integrated company down to proprietary crop breeding that gives it an advantage.

Speaker 2

The company started as a whiskey and gin dealer more than a hundred forty years ago.

Speaker 2

During prohibition, it leaned heavily on selling its yeast.

Speaker 2

And today, it sells mostly flavors and colors for food, cosmetics, and drugs.

Speaker 2

Back in 2000, it changed its name from Universal Foods.

Speaker 2

It is not a fast growing company, at least not up until now.

Speaker 2

In recent years, it's been growing sales by about 3% a year on average.

Speaker 2

But UBS reckons it'll achieve 10% yearly sales growth over the next five years, mostly from the shift to natural colorants.

Speaker 2

This year sales are pegged at $1,700,000,000 up 8% from last year.

Speaker 2

Sensing has about a $100,000,000 in exposure to artificial colorant sales, but it figures it can convert that to 10 times as much in natural colorant sales.

Speaker 2

Shares recently traded at 25 times this year's earnings forecast.

Speaker 2

You mentioned beets, Jackson.

Speaker 2

It turns out Sensient has a product called super red that can produce these really vivid shades of red.

Speaker 2

That might be something for my fireballs, and that's made using the company's proprietary UberBeat technology.

Speaker 2

That that word has taken, UberBeat.

Speaker 2

Don't try to use that.

Speaker 3

It's a I I every idea I have has already been taken.

Speaker 3

That's that's too bad.

Speaker 2

There is another natural red, that I read about in the company site called carmine.

Speaker 2

Have you ever heard of that carmine?

Speaker 3

I have not.

Speaker 2

Well, we're gonna end this bit on a fun fact then.

Speaker 2

Carmine has been around for ages.

Speaker 2

In fact, the British, the red coats, used it for their uniforms during the American revolution, and it's still used widely today, including in foods.

Speaker 2

My only hesitation about carmine, and Jackson, you know me.

Speaker 2

I I try not to be fussy.

Speaker 2

It turns out that it's made from something called, and again, I hope I'm pronouncing this right, cockneyle insects.

Speaker 3

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 2

The official name for the entomologists out there is Dactylopius coccus.

Speaker 2

These are apparently tiny, scaly sap suckers that like to live on prickly pear cacti.

Speaker 2

And the cacti are grown for that purpose in Mexico and Peru and Chile.

Speaker 2

And the cochineals are collected by hand, and then they're dried and crushed into powder so that their carminic acid can be extracted for dye.

Speaker 2

And Sensient says that carmine could be the new red three or red 40.

Speaker 2

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 2

I'll give you a quote.

Speaker 2

Are you're you're saying your mouth is watering?

Speaker 3

I I no.

Speaker 3

不是。

No.

Speaker 3

I'm I'm just seeing from vegetable to bug Froot Loops.

Speaker 3

Now that's cool.

Speaker 3

That might that might get kids interested.

Speaker 2

Well, as the company's senior technical director explains in an article, quote, at one point, the insect source of cockaniel was under some scrutiny, but lately, insects are an emerging food trend.

Speaker 3

Not in this household.

Speaker 2

I guess I'll I guess I'll leave you.

Speaker 2

I guess there's all kinds of possibilities for my fireballs.

Speaker 2

I'm stocking up with the red 40 ones, but let's see what happens down the road.

Speaker 2

By the way, the, atomic fireballs have been discontinued by the manufacturer.

Speaker 2

Did you know that?

Speaker 2

That's a not fun fact.

Speaker 2

Okay?

Speaker 2

Sorry to end on a down note.

Speaker 2

Stock up while you can, folks.

Speaker 3

Was it the red dye?

Speaker 2

I don't think it's the red dye.

Speaker 2

I think it might be just lack of popularity.

Speaker 2

I don't I don't see anyone else out there carrying around a big bag of fireballs.

Speaker 2

It's just me.

Speaker 2

But I'm

Speaker 3

gonna send you a picture, Jack, just because it's it's it has something to do with what we're talking about.

Speaker 3

It's for my fourth grade birthday.

Speaker 2

Oh, man.

Speaker 2

Look at what is this?

Speaker 2

What is this?

Speaker 2

How old are you in this picture?

Speaker 3

Isn't that crazy?

Speaker 3

I'm I I must have just turned 10.

Speaker 3

I guess it's in fourth grade, and we'd done the revolutionary war unit.

Speaker 2

Oh my lord.

Speaker 2

Look at your uniform.

Speaker 2

You're in full you're a red coat.

Speaker 2

I mean, you got everything.

Speaker 2

This is such a professional looking

Speaker 3

Get get the wig, the tricorn hat, and and boots that are probably five sizes too big

Speaker 2

in the swim.

Speaker 2

And you dressed as one of the red coats?

Speaker 3

I don't know why, but, yeah, apparently.

Speaker 2

I I know why.

Speaker 2

I know why.

Speaker 2

I gotta think.

Speaker 2

I maybe I maybe I shouldn't put this out there.

Speaker 2

I mean, they had better uniforms.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

They're just flashier.

Speaker 2

I mean, they were they were out there with those bold red uniforms.

Speaker 3

I mean, that's a look.

Speaker 3

I don't know

Speaker 2

if it's what you want in the woods.

Speaker 2

I don't think that's necessarily

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Take their side on on fashion only.

Speaker 2

Where do you get a uniform like this?

Speaker 2

Where'd you get it?

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

This was a costume shop near Burbank.

Speaker 2

对。

Right.

Speaker 2

And you went in, and you said to the fellow at the counter, hey, mister.

Speaker 2

I'd like to be a Revolutionary War soldier.

Speaker 2

And he said, I see, young man, that you'd like to look like an American patriot.

Speaker 2

And you said, not exactly.

Speaker 2

Guess guess again.

Speaker 2

Alright.

Speaker 2

That brings us to the 10 cheapest stocks in the S and P 500.

Speaker 2

Let's do a couple of them now, then we'll take a break, then we'll come back with the rest.

Speaker 2

I'll tell you two things right off the top.

Speaker 2

Number one, this is not, I repeat, not a sound investment strategy.

Speaker 2

This is not me saying, hey.

Speaker 2

Buy these 10 cheapest stocks in the S and P 500.

Speaker 2

They must be a great deal.

Speaker 2

You can't just do that.

Speaker 2

It's an overly simplistic approach.

Speaker 2

But the second thing I'll tell you is it's worked pretty darn well recently.

Speaker 2

If you pulled up the 10 lowest PE stocks a year ago and put equal dollar amounts in each, you'd have made 70% with dividends.

Speaker 2

You'd have beaten the S and P 500 by 49 points.

Speaker 2

If you had done it two years ago, you'd have outperformed by nine points.

Speaker 2

Five years ago, you were ahead by 73 points.

Speaker 2

And if you did this ten years ago, you beat the market by more than 300 points.

Speaker 2

That's nuts.

Speaker 2

I think it also has to be a fluke.

Speaker 2

I think the PE is a pretty simplistic signal of value, and the cheapest stocks in the market aren't always or aren't usually the best stocks.

Speaker 2

I'll come in a little while to why the cheapest stocks have done so well.

Speaker 2

But let me start with the cheapest one on the list.

Speaker 2

And really, of course, when I say cheap, I just mean lowest PE.

Speaker 2

I can't tell you whether this stock is going higher from here.

Speaker 2

The stock is Micron Technology, and they make memory, and it's up 520% in a year.

Speaker 2

And it trades at 4.4 times earnings.

Speaker 2

That compares with just over 20 times earnings for the S and P 500.

Speaker 2

How can a stock that's up 520% in a year still trade at 4.4 times earnings?

Speaker 3

It must have traded at point nine times earnings last year.

Speaker 2

Well, you would think so.

Speaker 2

What's actually happened is you can get a low PE ratio by having either a low p or a high e or both at the same time.

Speaker 2

But you can also have a rising p with an e that's just rising a whole lot faster.

Speaker 2

And that's what's happening in this case.

Speaker 2

Did that make sense, Jackson?

Speaker 2

I didn't mean to bring fractions.

Speaker 2

The fractions make people angry.

Speaker 3

Denominator is growing faster than the numerator.

Speaker 2

Then you're making them angrier.

Speaker 2

不是。

No.

Speaker 2

不是。

No.

Speaker 2

No one likes the word denominator.

Speaker 2

Let me show you what I mean.

Speaker 2

Memory, of course, is in fierce demand for AI data centers, and that's led to shortages and soaring prices.

Speaker 2

And so Micron is a company that never earned more than $12 a share.

Speaker 2

The highest year for earnings was back in, I believe, 2018, and it was $11 and change.

Speaker 2

But earnings for this fiscal year, which runs through August, they're pegged at $56 and change.

Speaker 2

And for next year, dollars 93 and change.

Speaker 2

And that compares with just over $8 last year.

Speaker 2

So earnings are just multiplying rapidly for this company because of the increased demand and the high prices.

Speaker 2

And if we were willing to pay anything more than $0 for music royalties, we'd start playing Lion Eyes from the Eagles.

Speaker 2

Because that's basically the approach I think investors are taking to this stock.

Speaker 2

They see the earnings.

Speaker 2

They see that the stock looks cheap, but they say, my eyes deceive me.

Speaker 2

Or at least, I have seen enough semiconductor booms in the past that fizzled.

Speaker 2

I'm not gonna be fooled by this one.

Speaker 2

I'm not gonna jump in with this stock up 500%.

Speaker 2

So the stock stays at four times earnings.

Speaker 2

But then gradually, investors come around and the stock keeps climbing.

Speaker 2

I don't know whether that will continue.

Speaker 3

And I don't think that whole thing would make a very good song.

Speaker 2

It's gonna be a tough rhyming job.

Speaker 2

You can't hide your lion eyes from our 2.8 terabyte per second massive data throughput.

Speaker 2

Now, see, throughput is a tough

Speaker 3

one to That in semiconductors.

Speaker 2

So that's Micron stock.

Speaker 2

It's basically climbing, if not a wall of worry, a wall of disbelief, a wall of distrust, a wall of I ain't gonna be the last person paying these prices for Micron stock just before the whole AI theme collapses.

Speaker 2

But, of course, there are many sensible people arguing quite reasonably that this AI spending spree has much longer to run.

Speaker 2

So we'll see.

Speaker 2

By the way, all this AI spending has done something similar to shares of a hard drive maker called Western Digital.

Speaker 2

You need a lot of hard drive storage in those AI data centers.

Speaker 2

This stock is not on the lowest PE list, but it was on it a decade ago.

Speaker 2

And since then, it has returned more than a thousand percent.

Speaker 2

That's one reason why I think the low PE years have done so well over the past decade.

Speaker 2

Another reason is a company called United Rentals that was on the list is no longer on the list.

Speaker 2

It has cashed in on a trend toward companies borrowing rather than buying construction equipment.

Speaker 2

Let me tell you one more stock that is on the list and a couple that have graduated off of the list.

Speaker 2

We've talked about all these names recently.

Speaker 2

General Motors, that's 6.2 times earnings, and it is no stranger to the lowest PE list.

Speaker 2

But we should point out that stock has also returned 68% over the past year and a 127% over the past three years.

Speaker 2

It has easily beaten the market.

Speaker 2

GM is generating a lot of cash by focusing on pricey trucks and sport utility vehicles.

Speaker 2

Demand for those is pretty solid.

Speaker 2

I know vehicles have gotten so expensive they're difficult to afford, but there's been this split that we've seen in a lot of parts of the economy.

Speaker 2

Higher income folks are still buying, and car companies are catering to them.

Speaker 2

And that's keeping their costs down and their margins up.

Speaker 2

So maybe GM will even be able to gain its way off of this list at some point.

Speaker 2

That's what's happened to Delta Airlines and United Airlines.

Speaker 2

We talked about them recently.

Speaker 2

They would have easily made a list of the 10 lowest PE stocks in the S and P 500 a decade ago.

Speaker 2

Even with this recent price spike for jet fuel, those two companies are generating tons of cash.

Speaker 2

In fact, if this proves a difficult period for weaker airlines, it might actually benefit those two in the long run.

Speaker 2

Anyhow, that's two companies down, eight to go, but we're gonna tear through those eight.

Speaker 2

What if we take a quick break here, Jackson?

Speaker 2

You go see if that, red coat uniform still fits, and we'll be right back.

Speaker 3

I wonder if my parents still have that.

Speaker 4

Isn't home where we all wanna be?

Welcome back.

Speaker 2

We're not just talking about cheap stocks.

Speaker 2

We're talking about the cheapest stocks or at least the lowest PE stocks in the S and P 500.

Speaker 2

I screen for those every once in a while and mostly an act of morbid curiosity.

Speaker 2

Although a bunch of them have done well lately, especially some ones from the list in recent years.

Speaker 2

There have been some structural changes that have gone on in autos and airlines and some of these formerly humble semiconductor pockets like memory and hard drives.

Speaker 2

Let's pick up with our list.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna go through most of these quickly.

Speaker 2

I don't have much to say about most of them.

Speaker 2

Have you heard of Global Payments or Fiserv?

Speaker 2

Global Payments is 4.7 times earnings, and Fiserv is seven times earnings.

Speaker 2

And they do pretty much the same thing.

Speaker 2

They're part of fintech, which is supposed to be exciting, but they're in the least exciting part of it, which is processing card payments for merchants.

Speaker 2

These companies are heavily indebted, but they're also generating plenty of free cash.

Speaker 2

They've done some deal making in the past.

Speaker 2

I have to believe that the goal now is to use that free cash to pay down the debt going forward.

Speaker 2

Based on the valuations, investors don't seem super jazzed about this line of work.

Speaker 2

We'll see how it goes for them.

Speaker 2

There are two insurance companies that made the list, Prudential Financial and a reinsurer called Everest Group.

Speaker 2

Prudential's 6.9 times earnings.

Speaker 2

Everest

Everest is 6.3 times earnings.

Speaker 2

You have to be careful about judging insurance companies by price to earnings ratios.

Speaker 2

It's more common to judge them by price to book value ratios.

Speaker 2

Earnings for them can be lumpy.

Speaker 3

Is that because of natural disasters or the the patterns of paying out reinsurance?

Speaker 3

Or is that for other reasons?

Speaker 2

Sometimes they have to take big charges, because of stuff like that.

Speaker 2

Sometimes they release, excess money into earnings.

Speaker 2

Generally, insurance companies make money two ways.

Speaker 2

They sell coverage for something, which means that their goal is to charge you more than they're gonna end up paying out on average.

Speaker 2

But, of course, there's often a big time difference between when you pay them and when they pay you.

Speaker 2

So the second way they make money is by taking that float of funds that are available to them and investing it.

Speaker 2

So their prosperity can be sensitive to things like changes in interest rates and how well investment markets are doing.

Speaker 2

Also how competitive their particular industry is, whether they're arrivals that are pricing low in order to gain market share.

Speaker 2

Anyhow, the only thing I'll point out about those is that Prudential has by far the highest dividend yield on the list, 5.8.

Speaker 2

I do wanna mention cable companies.

Speaker 2

Charter Communications

Charter Communications is on the list, 5.2 times earnings.

Speaker 2

We know the cable companies have been losing pay TV customers to streaming.

Speaker 2

That's been going on for years.

Speaker 2

The thought initially was that's okay.

Speaker 2

They don't mind that so much because as they lose pay TV customers, they're gonna keep broadband cable customers.

Speaker 2

People who are paying the cable company for their fast Internet service at home.

Speaker 2

That can actually be a higher margin business for cable companies.

Speaker 2

When you buy pay TV service, the cable company has to then pay the TV networks to include them.

Speaker 2

But when you're buying broadband, more of that money goes to the cable company.

Speaker 2

However, telecom loves this business too and is making inroads with fiber optic service, which is faster than coaxial service.

Speaker 2

What happened was the phone companies went through this massive spending period to upgrade their networks for five g.

Speaker 2

They were also competing fiercely on price.

Speaker 2

Both of those have subsided.

Speaker 2

They're not spending as much.

Speaker 2

They're not competing quite as fiercely.

Speaker 2

And the free cash flow in that business is great, and that's leaving a lot of money to be put to work on something.

Speaker 2

And they have decided that the best something is fiber optic broadband.

Speaker 2

And so they're rapidly expanding their networks.

Speaker 2

And they're able to bundle that service with their wireless service, and that makes wireless stickier.

Speaker 2

Meaning you might be willing to jump from company to company with your cell phone service, but you're probably gonna stick with a company that's providing your broadband for a while.

Speaker 2

You probably don't think about that company that much.

Speaker 2

And if you have the two on a bundle with a discount, you might be more likely to stay with the same company for wireless for longer.

Speaker 2

So the phone companies really like that business.

Speaker 2

And that means the cable companies are under fire now for basically both of the ways they make a living.

Speaker 2

And that's got investors pretty pessimistic about those shares.

Speaker 2

Have you heard of Gen Digital?

Speaker 2

That's 6.8 times earnings.

Speaker 2

That's a mashup of two players in home cybersecurity.

Speaker 2

The companies are Avast and something called Norton LifeLock.

Speaker 2

This company is growing, but it's also heavily indebted.

Speaker 2

There was a big run up over the past decade for shares of enterprise cybersecurity giants like Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike.

Speaker 2

GenDigital did not participate in that, but it has participated in much of the recent downside for these stocks on AI disruption fears.

Speaker 3

Did you hear about the latest, AI cybersecurity news from this week?

Speaker 3

Anthropic?

Anthropic?

Speaker 3

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 3

来自Anthropic。

From Anthropic.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

What a story in Barron's.

Speaker 2

You explain it while I pop in this fireball.

Speaker 3

Anthropic's developing this new model called Mythos.

Speaker 3

And in the development, they decided to delay its release because it was finding a very dangerous cybersecurity bugs in software that's been out for twenty years, twenty five years, like Linux, for example.

Speaker 3

And now they're so worried about releasing it to the public that they've given it to CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks as well as Amazon and Apple to test out before they release.

Speaker 2

That's that's the kind let me take my fireball out.

Speaker 2

Hold on.

Speaker 2

That's the kind of thing that's going on in this industry.

Speaker 2

Like, Like, are having a hard time figuring out whether AI helps or hurts, or and and maybe it does both.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 3

The the question there is, hey.

Speaker 3

If these AI models are finding these security vulnerabilities, maybe your security system is just asking your latest version of Anthropic to find all your vulnerabilities and and fix them for you.

Speaker 2

But, of course, the argument from the cybersecurity companies will be we're on top of it.

Speaker 2

We're using AI to get even better.

Speaker 2

Next up on the list is a company called AES, and we can cross it off the list immediately.

Speaker 2

It's five times earnings.

Speaker 2

It's a debt heavy utility, but it also recently agreed to a buyout by BlackRock's global infrastructure partners and other investors.

Speaker 3

So if my count is correct, that's number nine.

Speaker 3

That leaves one more left.

Speaker 2

There is just one last stock left, and it is Viatris.

Speaker 2

I don't know if we've ever talked about this stock.

Speaker 2

I've written about it in the past.

Speaker 3

I think I've heard is it the the EpiPen company?

Speaker 3

Right?

Speaker 3

They've re they changed their name

Speaker 2

because As I as I wrote in Barron's, this this company, it it began trading in November 2020.

Speaker 2

It might as well have been named Hate Sponge Incorporated because I think I mean, maybe it's just me.

Speaker 2

I think this was was one of the most loathed companies out there.

Speaker 2

There was a drug company called Mylan, and they were best known for buying, not creating, but buying EpiPen.

Speaker 2

Do we all know what that is?

Speaker 2

It's a life saving injector for severe allergic reactions.

Speaker 2

And I think it's commonly associated with, like, you know, kids who have a a nut allergy, And and they have a reaction, and their life's in jeopardy, and you give them this pen, and they can live.

Speaker 2

Well, Mylan bought this pen and then multiplied the price sevenfold in under a decade.

Speaker 2

Now, I mean, I'm all for capitalism, but, you know, that that's the kind of thing that doesn't sit well with I mean, picture picture the parents out there.

Speaker 2

Of course, you you you don't wait until you need this thing to buy it.

Speaker 2

So if you're a parent of a kid who has allergies, you have to stock these things, and they expire.

Speaker 2

There's a shelf life.

Speaker 2

So you know?

Speaker 2

And they sell them in two packs.

Speaker 2

So at one point, it was it was, you know, 6 or $700 for a two pack, and you have to buy them every so often because you don't wanna have one past expiration.

Speaker 2

And then even parents whose young children don't have allergies read, well, sometimes you have one of these reactions for the first time and you didn't know your kid was allergic, so you better have these pens on hand anyhow.

Speaker 2

I'm just saying that it it felt like kind of a burden to these people who had to buy these things.

Speaker 2

Okay.

Speaker 2

So that was the old company, Mylan.

Speaker 2

So what they did was they merged that together with part of Pfizer, probably was should I call it the ugliest the the least exciting part of Pfizer at the time, which was called Upjohn.

Speaker 2

And Upjohn had these, former blockbuster drugs that were now off patent.

Speaker 2

They were for things like cholesterol and impotence and arthritis and depression, and they were generating tons of cash.

Speaker 2

So they merged that business together with Mylan.

Speaker 2

And the idea was to use all this free cash flow to produce new and growing drugs.

Speaker 2

And I think a side benefit was you get a company with a new name and maybe over time, people forget about the whole EpiPen price hike thing.

Speaker 2

And it doesn't help their cause me reminding you here, but I think their strategy is I'm not gonna say it's working, but I certainly don't feel anywhere near as disgusted over Viatris as I once did over Mylan.

Speaker 2

And I noticed that if you look at consensus estimates on Wall Street, Viatris' earnings per share are expected to grow slightly this year for the first time since the merger back in 2020.

Speaker 2

The estimates have been slipping a little bit.

Speaker 2

So let's see if that actually happens.

Speaker 2

So maybe Viatris will one day be able to work its way off the cheapest of the cheapies list too.

Speaker 3

If you had to buy one of these stocks, which one would it be?

Speaker 2

Now you're asking this because you know that my instincts on this sort of thing are not good, and so you're gonna use this as a contrarian indicator.

Speaker 2

Have I got that right?

Speaker 3

But but think about the clicks.

Speaker 3

The the picks get the clicks.

Speaker 2

Don't tell me that that's something that people say.

Speaker 3

That's what I I'm saying it right now.

Speaker 2

I mean, I do like that big giant dividend on Prudential.

Speaker 2

With Micron, the thing to do is to jump into the price momentum, but I'm always too chicken for a thing like that.

Speaker 2

That global payments, that's that's, like, almost boring enough to work.

Speaker 2

But I like the idea of Viatris going from shrinking earnings to growing earnings even if it looks like meager growth to begin with.

Speaker 2

Maybe that's something that investors will reward it for.

Speaker 2

That seems like the safest pick.

Speaker 2

The safest pick from a bunch of picks that are definitely not safe.

Speaker 2

Okay?

Speaker 2

So don't this by the way, I I'm not picking it.

Speaker 2

Alright?

Speaker 2

Don't run out and put little Timmy or Susie's college fund in Viatris because you heard it on a podcast.

Speaker 2

But you could look into it on your own if you like.

Speaker 2

What about you, Jackson?

Speaker 2

Is there one of these that, appeals to you or you don't like any of them?

Speaker 3

I I like I like cable.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Just because it's it sounds like such a bad idea on the tin that it's it's gotta be good.

Speaker 3

I'll say I miss cable.

Speaker 3

I miss all those shows.

Speaker 3

I I don't watch enough of those.

Speaker 2

You like cable.

Speaker 2

I was gonna say I don't think I've ever heard

Speaker 3

those three words together like that.

Speaker 3

How would you describe a show like Storage Wars and Ice Road Truckers?

Speaker 3

And that's I I miss watching those.

Speaker 2

I think I know what you mean.

Speaker 2

Well, those are reality shows.

Speaker 2

对。

Right?

Speaker 2

But not like the Kardashian kind of ones.

Speaker 2

Those are like like, one of my favorites was a bunch of people with beards.

Speaker 2

Well, the men had beards.

Speaker 2

And they were in Maine, and they were restoring cabins.

Speaker 2

And the title is something like that.

Speaker 2

Maine cabin people.

Speaker 2

You know?

Speaker 2

And as I've mentioned before, I like the ones with all the fishermen.

Speaker 2

The wicked tuna.

Speaker 2

I was a big wicked tuna guy for a long time.

Speaker 2

Did you know there's a wicked tuna video game?

Speaker 2

Have I

Speaker 3

No way.

Speaker 2

Told you that yet?

Speaker 2

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 2

Spotted it at a, what's the place where where they have the restaurant?

Speaker 2

The, the the the D and B, something D and B.

Speaker 3

Dave and Buster's?

Speaker 2

Dave and Buster's.

Speaker 2

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I was thinking Dun and Bradstreet.

Speaker 2

That's a that's a Wall Street brand from a thousand years ago.

Speaker 3

That that's a much less fun bar.

Speaker 2

There's there's a Wicked Tuna video game, and it's got all my favorite Wicked Tuna fishermen like saying their things in the game.

Speaker 2

I played it with my daughter.

Speaker 2

She beat me.

Speaker 3

Well, I'm long wicked tuna.

Speaker 2

And that is my hottest tip of this week's episode.

Speaker 2

Get your get yourself around a wicked tuna over at, Dave and Buster's before, you know, while while the getting's good.

Speaker 2

And when I'm giving fishing video game recommendations, that means it's time to wrap up.
