That's why centralized exchanges have been so successful so far is that you get to basically cut a lot cut a lot of these corners, or or I guess you just kinda, like, get to not think about a lot of these problems.

Speaker 0

Like, you know, MEV is one of them, but, like yeah.

Speaker 0

There's just, like, a lot of unsolved technical problems.

Speaker 0

Like, how do you coordinate these validators?

Speaker 0

Do things that still allow for a seamless trading experience.

Speaker 0

But I think all these can be solved, and it's also a fun thing to solve.

Speaker 0

So I think smart people naturally are attracted to hard problems, we'll solve them all.

Speaker 0

So, yeah, I would definitely bet on the global financial system being on a decentralized platform, like, owned by the people.

Welcome back to another episode of Bell Curve.

Speaker 1

This is a great one.

Speaker 1

I am joined as always by my trusty cohost, Monet.

Speaker 1

Monet,

Monet, hello, sir.

Speaker 1

And we've also got Jeff of Hyperliquid, or do you go by El Jefe?

Speaker 1

Jeff,

What's the preference here, Jeff, for this topic?

Speaker 1

Jeff。

Jeff.

Speaker 1

I don't

Speaker 0

know where Jefe came from.

Speaker 1

Not sure.

Speaker 1

But it's it's a nice nickname.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

We have got an enormous amount of ground to cover today.

Speaker 1

So we we ended our last episode with Hasu and Rob Leshner, actually kind of on the subject of DEXs.

Speaker 1

And so we thought there'd be no one to better discuss the future of DEXs in general with than than you.

Speaker 1

And maybe before we get into it, could you just give us a really quick, maybe two minute overview of the history of Hyperliquid and how you guys have gotten to this point?

Speaker 1

Because I think in the last year, you've not only dominated in terms of volumes, but the architecture and kind of the future vision of Hyperliquid as a perp decks towards more of an L1 has changed a decent amount.

Speaker 1

So can you just kind of remind viewers, you know, how did you start and then how did you get to where you are today?

Speaker 1

And then we can get into some of the weeds of the architecture.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Sounds good.

Speaker 0

我叫Jeff。

So I'm Jeff.

Speaker 0

I lead Hyperliquid development, and we're a super small team, mostly Americans.

Speaker 0

I myself grew up in The US, went to school at Harvard, studied math and CS, and after school, to do market making in TradFi, so at a firm called Hudson River Trading.

Speaker 0

Learned a lot about markets and thinking about them rigorously, but ultimately was pulled into crypto and, yeah, wanting to build.

Speaker 0

Basically, DeFi kind of spoke to me even in 2018 when there were basically no users yet.

Speaker 0

So kinda got waylaid and ultimately ended up just doing prop trading in crypto there.

Speaker 0

And from that, we kind of were plugged into all of the markets, both CeFi and DeFi, and had a pretty big presence.

Speaker 0

And when FTX collapsed, that was kind of the sort of impetus to start thinking about what ultimately became Hyperliquid.

Speaker 0

Basically, we saw we saw the problems with FTX firsthand and witnessed a mental shift where people kind of realized that, you know, crypto's all fun and games until something bad happens, and then you then you realize that the value props of crypto itself, actually ironically are sort of antithetical to how these centralized entities are.

Speaker 0

Jeff, can

Speaker 1

I can I interrupt and ask maybe a slightly heretical question?

Speaker 1

Is there anything that you think FTX did particularly well?

Speaker 1

Because I remember at the time, FTX was a beloved exchange, especially for traders.

Speaker 1

They had a lot of good stuff to say.

Speaker 1

And, you know, the I'm front running a question that I wanted to ask you later, but it seems like the go to market for a lot of new exchanges who've been able to make or splash on the scale that Hyperliquid has is you start to kind of innovate around listing assets more quickly.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

And this is kind of everyone from Binance to not comparing Hyperliquid at all to FTX.

Speaker 1

At one point, they did okay as an exchange.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

But that's kind of an early step of go to market and iteration.

Speaker 1

So I'm curious from your standpoint.

Speaker 1

It's always actually somewhat a question that I've wanted to ask someone that does understand market microstructure better than myself.

Speaker 1

Did FTX actually have good trading technology, or was it just Alameda on the back end?

Speaker 1

Like, what's your view there as a trader?

Speaker 1

I'm curious to see what you thought they innovated on versus what was smoke and mirrors.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's a good question.

Speaker 0

So so we actually never touched FTX at all.

Speaker 0

Like, I was always just suspicious that Alameda and that so, basically, you you just hear all the stories.

Speaker 0

It's like they they share the office.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

There's, like, really like, same people running the two.

Speaker 0

So, you know, obviously, hindsight is twenty twenty, but I will say we we never touched it.

Speaker 0

We we just it was, for us, it was just like a red flag from the beginning.

Speaker 0

And so I can't speak to the, like, the exchange, but I think they did a lot of things.

Speaker 0

Obviously, were very successful, right?

Speaker 0

So crime doesn't help you succeed.

Speaker 0

You need something like some core product that you build.

Speaker 0

And I do think they had some things there.

Speaker 0

So I think that they did things like they kind of studied all the other exchanges and kind of presented the data in a very easy way to their users saying, like, he I don't know if I don't know if you guys remember the there was a, like, a basically a CSV that they publish every day with, like, volumes and, like, they had some formula for, like, the amount of watch trading happening on this venue.

Speaker 0

They kind of stacked ranked the exchanges.

Speaker 0

I think that was super good transparency for users.

Speaker 0

What I mean, their UI was, I think, good.

Speaker 0

It was very clearly designed by traders.

Speaker 0

I think an overlooked point, which is that building a trading interface is actually it's a very complex product, and you need to cater to many different users.

Speaker 0

And you kind of there's kind of like one canonical front end, especially if you're building a centralized exchange.

Speaker 0

And so there are a lot of just micro decisions on sort of balancing the needs of different people who probably want opposing things.

Speaker 0

The pro users want all these bells and whistles and really basic users, first time users, don't even know what they want, but if you put all the bells and whistles, they'll just be super confused.

Speaker 0

And so they obviously kind of I think they executed that well.

Speaker 1

Awesome.

Speaker 1

Sorry.

Speaker 1

I didn't mean to derail us there.

Speaker 1

So back to back to Hyperliquid.

Speaker 1

And maybe talk to us about the origins there and then, again, how that evolved to

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So going back to that.

Speaker 0

So, basically, with FTX's collapse, we we kinda saw this need for sort of user focus or something that users love, but also something that users can trust and really align with the original ethos of DeFi.

Speaker 0

And so, yeah, it kind of started as a perps DEX.

Speaker 0

In building it out, we kinda realized that, basically, all the infrastructure in crypto is kind of not production ready for this specific use case of, like, high throughput, low latency global exchange, even if you're just focusing on crypto, let alone all of finance.

Speaker 0

And so we basically never backed down from the challenge.

Speaker 0

We're just instead of compromising, we're like, okay, let's just drill deeper.

Speaker 0

Like, can we build the next layer of infrastructure below the one that we're currently building and ultimately ended up at building an L1 itself?

Speaker 0

It's like I guess for for the less technical users, like, a blockchain, basically.

Speaker 0

So you look at Ethereum, Solana, even Bitcoin, they're all just kind of these public ledgers where different nodes around the world can agree on some world state.

Speaker 0

And what that state is just depends on how it evolves also depends on the different chains.

Speaker 0

And none of these were suitable for the sort of ultimate vision of Hyperliquid, which is to be a trusted financial layer for all of finance to kind of be built on top of.

Speaker 0

And I guess we'll probably go into this later as well.

Speaker 0

So, yeah, Hyperliquid kind of grew from just a perp decks to financial infrastructure powering a perp decks, but also other stuff.

Speaker 0

And then this other stuff kind of came along as we were thinking more about really moving finance on chain.

Speaker 0

Like, perps is a really big part in crypto, but just having, like, single asset denominated derivatives, like, linear derivatives, you know, less people express their views long short, but doesn't actually let you kind of build all the building blocks and ultimately move people's sort of financial lives onto this new and improved platform.

Speaker 0

And so part of that came with, like, spot launch, like launching spot trading.

Speaker 0

But then really, like, I think the last piece that took us a while to kind of arrive at and, like, really commit to building was the HyperEVM.

Speaker 0

And, you know, obviously, like, standing on the shoulders of giants here where Ethereum really pioneered this sort of general purpose smart contract system and letting and all the tooling and ecosystem around it.

Speaker 0

I think it's, like, super cool.

Speaker 0

And that was really what ultimately led us to decide that, like, the EVM is the way to go.

Speaker 0

Just like there's, like, a lot of developer mindshare and just culture around building applications that trust us to interface with other applications through smart contracts and just bringing all of that expressive language and technical know how to just, like, have that work on Hyperliquid.

Speaker 0

And, like, that that was basically probably, like, a half year long endeavor.

Speaker 0

And we the the vision here was, like, not just to, like, tack on an EVM so that people could play around with it, but really, was, like, for us, it it was it was a super important component into how, like, how users would ultimately end up interacting with these natively built primitives, like order books, perps, swap trading, etcetera.

Speaker 0

And just letting just having that fully composable link between the EVM and what the other stuff, which now is called HyperCore, was it was a very tricky interface to get.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Went through many iterations.

Speaker 0

But I think where it is now is probably not final either.

Speaker 0

It's constantly evolving, but I think people are starting to realize that the power of correctly built abstractions there.

Speaker 0

Maybe one example, just I guess this is much longer than a two minute intro.

Speaker 0

One recent example is the USDT launch, which was in collaboration with Layer zero.

Speaker 0

So two very big crypto protocols and kind of coming in and just plugging into Hyperliquid so seamlessly because they're familiar with EVM chains and adding it as another EVM chain in their mesh network.

Speaker 0

And basically, they really leverage this abstraction so that they can do all the trustless bridging and minting natively on Hyperliquid without bridging risk and then let users on HyperCore sort of directly interact with their asset in a way that they don't even need to touch because that part is built into the protocol itself.

Speaker 0

I think that that kind of, like, that kind of, like, moment, I I think there'll be many more of those as as people really kind of familiarize themselves with, yeah, with with what is going on in the ecosystem.

Speaker 2

I would, I would love to hear kind of maybe if you have more thoughts on, what that that sort of close integration between the the perp decks and the spot markets versus the EVM will have going forward.

Speaker 2

Are there any, like, use cases that you're super excited about from that kind of new architecture where an exchange and a and a l, you know, l one EVM are are really intimately linked?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

There are many examples.

Speaker 0

I'm trying to decide.

Speaker 0

I think I can go into one that's like it's a bit complex, but I think it's, like, really interesting.

Speaker 0

So another big component of the L1 is is staking, and it's a proof of stake consensus algorithm.

Speaker 0

So users need to basically delegate their hype to one of these validators.

Speaker 0

It's permissionless to to spin up a validator, so anyone can self delegate the 10,000 hype and then basically spin up a node and broadcast.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

Here's I'm here and, like, you know, delegate to me, and then everyone kind of proposes blocks in proportion to how much stake they have delegated.

Speaker 0

Pretty standard for proof of stake networks.

Speaker 0

What's interesting about staking on Hyperliquid is that more and more the staking kinda has a different utility for different users.

Speaker 0

And so one part you saw relatively recently was that staking now is a is an input into trading fees, and so it kind of aligns users and stakers, which I think is is, like, a really just positive thing for the protocol as a whole.

Speaker 0

Jeff, what

Speaker 1

other than it's an input into trading fees is in you stake and you have lower trading fees?

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's no other venue does.

Speaker 0

Like, that's something Binance has a similar thing where you need to stake a certain amount to hit a certain tier, but on Hyperliquid, it's like you can you can trade as much as you want.

Speaker 0

You can stake as much as you want, and those two together, like, each provide their own, like, I guess, discount into the trading fee.

Speaker 0

And it's all computed on chain.

Speaker 1

So interesting.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And but but, like, another even more, I would say, like, cutting edge application of staking is that that HIP three was announced recently, and there's still a lot of community input going into it and testing and whatever on test net.

Speaker 0

So it's not close to being live yet, but it's it's a very big milestone.

Speaker 0

And this is the Permissionless Perps sort of, like, I don't know, like, scaffolding, like, framework, if you will.

Speaker 0

And staking is a big input to this because with perps, unlike spot like, spot order books are kind of are very well defined, and so most exchanges actually start as spot exchanges and only later on venture derivatives.

Speaker 0

But perps, I think, like the whoever's setting the oracle and market price sort of have have a lot of power to kinda, like, mess with the markets if if they were to choose.

Speaker 0

And staking is kind of the solution here, which is that usually staking only keeps validators honest, but on Hyperliquid, staking also keeps sort of, like, per deployers and, like, Oracle updaters.

Speaker 0

I think the Oracle updaters will mostly be, like, other protocols, but you still kinda need to hold them accountable.

Speaker 0

Like, the protocol needs to hold the other protocol accountable.

Speaker 0

So, yeah, staking is like a way where the the deployer of the perps market needs to put up a massive amount of stake.

Speaker 0

And during the unbonding period of, like, unstaking, they could be slashed.

Speaker 0

Now this could be for various reasons.

Speaker 0

Like, within consensus, the the slashing is usually for malicious things such as, like, voting voting on two different blocks at at the same height, which is, like, clearly malicious, provable bad stuff.

Speaker 0

With perp deployments, I think it will be similar.

Speaker 0

It's like, I mean, you spec out this market, and you kind of you violated the spec that you put out and liquidated a bunch of users.

Speaker 0

Like, clearly very bad, and there needs to be disincentive to doing that.

Speaker 0

Otherwise, the whole no one would trade perps.

Speaker 0

没错。

And yeah.

Speaker 0

So I think going back to the original question, like, how does how does the EVM integrate?

Speaker 0

Well, I think there'd be many perp deployers who don't who don't want to or can't afford to put up this capital, but they can operate a really good really interesting perp market that users want.

Speaker 0

So this perp deployer could basically create an LST.

Speaker 0

And the interesting thing here is, like, the LST would be on HyperEVM composing directly with HyperCore.

Speaker 0

So, like, not not even, like, a not even, like, a multisig that then just, like, goes and stakes, but rather, like, the contract itself can stake.

Speaker 0

So it can be, like, fully composable on chain.

Speaker 0

We get a bunch of users to kind of stick to it.

Speaker 0

The governance of the thing can, like, just be the contract itself.

Speaker 0

And it can say, like, okay.

Speaker 0

Once we hit this threshold, we will send like, the contract will permissionlessly, processly execute this transaction to deploy the perp.

Speaker 0

And users can say, okay.

Speaker 0

I'm okay with that.

Speaker 0

Like, I wanna put up my my my hype stake it in this way.

Speaker 0

And the deployer of the protocol can actually then share, let's say, like, some percentage of the fees on this perp market back to the LST constituents.

Speaker 0

And this whole thing the the the key thing here is, like, unlike other protocols where the LST is basically like a like a smart contract that then has permissions, like, permissions to, like, do stuff with the funds.

Speaker 0

It's actually, like, fully on chain, which I think is, like, super cool.

Speaker 0

And so, yeah, I think I think that's one example, basically.

Speaker 0

It's like like these perp perps kind of, like, backed by their users.

Speaker 0

I think that'd like, one cool way in which the EVM and the HyperCore can interact.

Speaker 1

Jeff, that's super interesting.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 1

So you know what I found myself wondering, you know, when we're describing this?

Speaker 1

And maybe to just, you know, again, rewind and summarize sort of the history of of Hyperliquid, which is it kind of guys kind of started as a perp decks with by a bridge to by a arbitrum.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Like kind of the that's originally how a bunch of the the assets flowed into Hyperliquid.

Speaker 1

And now you've built your own sort of instantiation of the EVM and are a bonafide L1.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

And, you know, I'm curious when I think about what you guys are experimenting with, a lot of other protocols, especially on Ethereum, might have thought about building an L2.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

And when I look at, you know, what, like, Monad is trying to do today or base, you know, they're all kind of experimenting around what changes they can make to the EVM because that's kind of the bottleneck for throughput at this point.

Speaker 1

But they've chosen to build this in l two with a single or a centralized sequencer.

Speaker 1

You guys have gone in another direction and are innovating and experimenting with your own sort of souped up version of the EVM, but you also wanna build as an L1.

Speaker 1

So talk to me about that design design decision.

Speaker 1

Why L1 versus, like, an Eth L2?

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

Mine is an L1 too, so I think it's I think the examples you give maybe, like, the the common thread is that they're, like, vanilla EVM execution as opposed to sort of expanding the sort of execution logic?

Speaker 0

Would that be a fair summary of the question?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That's a that's a fair summary.

Speaker 1

I mean, I think this is also a challenge of the l twos in general as well as, like, the backward compatibility, which is obviously that you you wanna kinda build on this, you know, ecosystem of developers who are used to building in the EVM, but also you wanna make some changes so you can increase performance because there are some real limitations around the EVM.

Speaker 1

没错。

So Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's a good question.

Speaker 0

I think Yeah.

Speaker 0

There are many sides There are many answers to this.

Speaker 0

Like, one of them is a practical one.

Speaker 0

It's just that, like, initially, the priority was just to get something that users wanted at all, the easiest way was to not worry about an EVM.

Speaker 0

But I think at this point, we have the luxury to kind of zoom out a bit and say, What is the correct thing to do, given that all of finance should happen on one platform?

Speaker 0

And even sort of retrospectively, if we could have changed anything, I don't think I would have.

Speaker 0

I think the EVM is great.

Speaker 0

I think it's really good for maybe a good analogy, I think, is like the EVM is EVM is to all of finance as AMMs are to all of trading.

Speaker 0

So it's really good to cover this super long tail.

Speaker 0

And I think people understand just how long the tail is of things that can be done in finance.

Speaker 0

This is where AMMs cover super long tail liquidity, where you're throwing five people enrolled who want to trade some asset.

Speaker 0

An AMM is probably the best way to coordinate that trading.

Speaker 0

So I don't think it's good or bad.

Speaker 0

It just has its use cases.

Speaker 0

I think if want a platform that can house all of finance, it cannot just be built on an EVM no matter how performant the EVM is.

Speaker 0

And then maybe one example, which we gave this example way back just when we even starting Hyperliquid because there were a bunch of questions like, why isn't it just built on an EVM?

Speaker 0

The And example is just if you have a perp dex, with a perp dex, the number one concern is risk for the system.

Speaker 0

So Hyperliquid has I can write down these mathematically prove to you that Hyperliquid is solvent.

Speaker 0

Every purpose market is solvent at every block.

Speaker 0

And of course, there can be bugs in implementation, etcetera.

Speaker 0

But I mean, theoretically, there's there's, like there's no way for the system to have bad debt assuming you implemented everything correctly.

Speaker 0

And but I would not be able to do this for an EVM based perp decks because there's no there's no execution guarantees.

Speaker 0

Like, you you can never with an EVM, there's always some sort of auction system or otherwise to determine which transactions go through.

Speaker 0

Whereas on a custom execution environment, you can say, well, when this block happens, we need to do these things to make sure the perp balances are all positive, or whatever condition you want, positive when it's unbound or whatever.

Speaker 0

You can basically you can basically say, like, this logic needs to execute on every block no matter what users are submitting.

Speaker 0

I think that's, like, super important for derivatives.

Speaker 0

So, yeah, I think, like, long tail spot trading, no no need.

Speaker 0

If if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Speaker 0

But but, yeah, the when the ambitions are bigger, I think you kinda need to look beyond and kind of you have to question everything and say, like, is this really the best way to do things?

Speaker 1

Very cool.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

I wanna change tacks a little bit and describe how you're thinking about handling MEV in this in this system.

Speaker 1

And, you know, I thought it was really interesting actually to sort of, you know, bring stake.

Speaker 1

There actually was an old paper.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna blank on the name.

Speaker 1

I'll find it and include it in the show notes.

Speaker 1

Dave Oha of Osmosis actually wrote about the idea a couple of years ago about because basically what fees are, especially on an L1, is spam prevention.

Speaker 1

And so it's a really interesting idea to basically say, hey.

Speaker 1

If you're a staker, it also makes sense that you're probably a good actor in the network and we don't need charge you the same amount of fees for, you know, DoS attacks.

Speaker 1

It's super interesting and innovative.

Speaker 1

One thing that we've also seen as well, and I know something that you think a lot about, is prioritizing Oracle updates in general.

Speaker 1

And know, I'm curious when you think about this world of MEV, which has been really, really thorny, at least in environments like Ethereum, Solana as well.

Speaker 1

That's kind of one of the trade offs in, you know, an L1, which is truly permissionless versus a more controlled environment like L2s.

Speaker 1

And you're you're starting to see, I don't know, like, the optimism versus arbitrum approach is differing quite a bit, but both of them are basically doing things that you could never do on the L1.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

So I'm curious how you think about the design around MEV within your ecosystem and maybe talk a little bit about Oracle updates specifically as an area that you're focusing on.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

A lot to unpack there.

Speaker 0

Where to start?

Speaker 0

Think MEV is

Speaker 1

I always answer I always ask three questions in one.

Speaker 1

It's a horrible habit of doing podcasts for years.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I I think the I I think MEV is it's thorny, but it in some sense, it's like it's like it's like a really popular research topic, but it kind of it's like a good problem to have.

Speaker 0

It means that there's kind of real flow going through the platform.

Speaker 0

So I will say I think Solana had a good people give them a lot of shit for whatever, not thinking about MEV, but I actually think they did a really good job of just, like, getting a lot of people to wanna use the chain.

Speaker 0

Like, yeah, like, let's get people to use like, let's build something the users want first, and then any anything else that comes up is second order.

Speaker 0

And I think MEV is kinda like one of the second order things.

Speaker 0

I'm not I'm not trivializing the problem, but I actually think it's solvable.

Speaker 0

I don't remember who I saw some tweets recently.

Speaker 0

You can maybe add them as notes later as well.

Speaker 0

But the sort of multiple proposers committing hashes.

Speaker 0

Like, like, basically, like, block Blockborders committing hashes of transactions sent by multiple proposers and then, like, deduplicating them and then just sorting them by priority.

Speaker 0

Think I think Dan Robinson also, like, talks a lot about sort of just priorities kind of all you need.

Speaker 0

And and I think I think, like, these ideas together kind of solve the one block MEV problem where it's, like, malicious, proposer can extract value.

Speaker 0

I will say, I think going to, like, the the Hyperliquid part of the question, I I do think MEV is, like, a bit I think it's a bit pigeonholed when you think about it as purely within a single block.

Speaker 0

I think the problem is bigger.

Speaker 0

The analogy here is if you're trading let's say you're trading on a centralized exchange and some market making firm has a microwave from Chicago to Tokyo maybe not microwave for a microwave and then some underwater fibers and stuff and can basically pick off your orders.

Speaker 0

And then let's say the centralized exchange was operating actually on a blockchain and had 20 blocks per second.

Speaker 0

You don't actually I don't think as a trader, you care whether it's like, oh, the MEV came from the block proposers seeing my transaction and reordering some take your order in front of it, or if it came from this trading firm having super fast connectivity and being able to pick you off.

Speaker 0

I I think a market maker is basically like a user, and that user gets screwed in either case.

Speaker 0

And from their perspective, their reaction is the same as to widen their quotes.

Speaker 0

That ultimately hurts the retail traders.

Speaker 0

So from my perspective, MEV is just a subset of some broader problem, which is toxic flow.

Speaker 0

And we think a lot about this.

Speaker 0

So Hyperliquid was the first I want to say definitely the first crypto thing to do this as far as I know, and then probably the first okay.

Speaker 0

I mean, I'm not I'm not gonna so I I think one of the first large venues to gain traction to basically do this thing where takers are kind of treated symmetrically across the board, which is that their flow is deprioritized.

Speaker 0

And the net effect of this is, one, is less volume overall, but two, is the volume is sort of better.

Speaker 0

It's like both sides are kind of always happy, even if they Let's say you gave everyone, every actor, like, one second to sort of think about whether they actually wanted to make that trade.

Speaker 0

Think you want that percentage to be as high as possible.

Speaker 0

And I think with this change, it goes up dramatically because otherwise, a ton of your volume is like a toxic taker picking off a market maker and just ultimately retail eating the cost.

Speaker 0

So that's an example of how I think MEV should be handled, which is a little bit more agnostic to the dynamics of the MEV, more like the user perspective of, like, you know, don't get screwed by the protocol.

Speaker 1

Jeff, this is super interesting.

Speaker 1

And for those who are a little bit less in the weeds of market microstructure, to summarize what you're saying here, I think it's this has always been really challenging for market makers to work on chain.

Speaker 1

对。

Right?

Speaker 1

Because if you post quotes, they become stale very quickly.

Speaker 1

And if you have very sophisticated takers, there is a relatively large market making firm who's recently moved on to Solana who is doing this, which, you know, shall remain nameless.

Speaker 1

But basically, they're acting as a taker.

Speaker 1

They're picking off stale quotes from market makers.

Speaker 1

And so MMs then have to quote wider, right?

Speaker 1

So it widens out bid ask spreads and retail ends up paying more for their execution costs.

Speaker 1

So I've got a lot of questions for you on that.

Speaker 1

Can we rewind?

Speaker 1

And I actually want to you started to get into something really interesting in the handling of MEV that I wanted to talk to you about.

Speaker 1

So you referenced Dan Dan Robinson's priority is all you need.

Speaker 1

So this is relatively the approach that's being taken on optimism.

Speaker 1

So they have something like an EIP one five five nine base fee, and then they just sort transactions in order of who's paying the highest priority fee.

Speaker 1

To my understanding, that's something that's really difficult that you couldn't necessarily do on ETH L1 today because each proposer is random.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

So you would need, like, a very, you know, very fat builders right in the middle of that or a relay system or something like that to enforce it.

Speaker 1

But even so, from my understanding, it's not super easy to try.

Speaker 1

What I heard you just describe actually is sort of a and this was a a question that I had for you around, your thoughts on multiple concurrent proposers and what's going on in Solana.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Because the Solana approach to multiple concurrent proposers is this flies in the face of what we know about co locating, right?

Speaker 1

Which is, hey, if we're going to build a centralized box, you want to locate as close as you can to that box in Tokyo or Frankfurt or whatever, and that's the end of it.

Speaker 1

But the my understanding is the Resnick totally vision around this is that if you actually have a bunch of different proposals all over the world, then that you can actually quote or you can, you know, do blocks faster, somewhere around 20, I think, is their idea.

Speaker 1

You I just heard you unite all of those ideas, and I don't understand how you did it.

Speaker 1

So talk to me about how you can bring priority is all you need to an l one type environment.

Speaker 1

And then if you could layer in your thoughts about multiple concurrent proposals and how viable that is as a consensus strategy.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Yeah, I don't wanna take credit for that.

Speaker 0

I was actually just reading I was trying to just paraphrase what I thought this paper was saying, so maybe I misread it.

Speaker 0

But I think it's like the Solana, I think the ANZA folks and

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Resnick和Atulia。

Resnick and Atulia.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I think maybe them as well.

Speaker 0

I really should, you know, learn the sources.

Speaker 0

But it was just this paper, and it was think it was it made a lot of sense to me.

Speaker 0

As I so I'm actually not an MEV researcher.

Speaker 1

我们

We

Speaker 0

we kind of just think about things from first principles and build stuff, and often people later on come and, like, give some fancy names to something that we did and, like you know?

Speaker 0

Maybe also, like, someone else was thinking about the same thing in parallel, we just, like, didn't didn't know.

Speaker 0

But so I might I might butcher some of the, like so, like, technical terminology here.

Speaker 0

But but, basically, I don't think I I I think in in a world where networks are super fast, you don't care about, like, additional hops and, like, sort of additional times of, like basically between proposing and executing a block.

Speaker 0

I I don't really see any downside to having multiple proposers, just kind of like, you know, all commit transactions and then the kinda, like, unveil them after the sorry.

Speaker 0

Maybe a minute.

Speaker 0

So the different builders propose transactions, and there can be duplicates.

Speaker 0

And then the the proposer basically bundling these, and then the the builders kind of unveiling them after the fact.

Speaker 0

And maybe there there's some, like, slashing if there's malicious stuff.

Speaker 0

Like, it all seems kinda, like, very solvable to me, though.

Speaker 0

Granted, I haven't thought about it too much.

Speaker 0

And, yeah, I think this this adds, like, latency because you need to listen to multiple builders as a proposer before you hit some threshold where, like, you're okay building the block.

Speaker 0

Otherwise, if that's not allowed, then you can just take one of them and then all the MEV is back.

Speaker 0

But, yeah, I mean, other than these sort of, like these these what feel like constant factor latency increases and maybe and probably increases the sort of networking overhead of the network as a whole.

Speaker 0

But again, I think these are all just like like, hardware just scales super well, so I feel like this should just happen.

Speaker 0

And, yeah, in my mind, it feels like, yeah, then you just once you have all these once you have different sources of transactions in a single block and you just order them by priority, there's there's, like, no way for like, the game theory just completely changes, there's, like, there's, like, nothing you can really do to game it.

Speaker 0

That being said, I think, like, basically, another one I'd point is that I think just having, like, really fast blocks also kinda solves the problem in two different ways.

Speaker 0

Like, it makes like, the amount of MEV in a block scales with the time between blocks because, like, imagine you just have one block a day or something, then ETH's price probably has moved plusminus 10%.

Speaker 0

Then obviously, if you're the one building that block, you have so much wiggle room to pick people off.

Speaker 0

But if blocks are one millisecond, for example, then doesn't really matter.

Speaker 0

Like, how dishonest can you be in a block?

Speaker 0

Like, all you can do is reorder stuff, but, like, nothing happened in that millisecond.

Speaker 0

So, like, you can't really mess with it.

Speaker 0

So I think those are, like, the two limits you can think about, and there's, like, clearly a continuum there.

Speaker 0

And so in some sense, the, like, yeah, the faster you're willing to make blocks, the less of a problem there is to begin with.

Speaker 0

And then but that's intention with the fact that the faster you make blocks, the harder it is to do all these fancy things of multiple proposals, etcetera, or multiple people proposing inputs to give to the proposal.

Speaker 0

I don't know what that's called.

Speaker 0

So I think they're both yeah.

Speaker 0

There's probably just some there's basically some three-dimensional surface you're thinking about here or three-dimensional volume of and the axes are how fast blocks or how geographically dispersed or how much network tolerance you have and the amount of fancy stuff you're willing to do.

Speaker 0

And there's a lot of pretty optimal points you can pick.

Speaker 0

So, yeah, I think MEV will be a solved problem.

Speaker 0

I think protocols really should focus on getting users first.

Speaker 0

I think but on the other hand, I really appreciate all these researchers doing this work.

Speaker 0

It's really interesting technically, I think it's really cool to see how far the space has come since Ethereum, which my understanding is there was not much thought given to MEV at all, just when Ethereum was built because they had so much shit to figure out.

Speaker 0

And so it's just it's really cool.

Speaker 0

I I think both are super important.

Speaker 0

I think, probably prediction would be like in the next few years.

Speaker 0

It's people look back and say, like, oh, that's it's funny that we thought this would, like, kill crypto, but it's just, like, just one of those technical challenges.

Speaker 2

I guess one follow-up from, like, hearing about, like, multiple concurrent proposals and just the the challenges of, like, you know, maybe trying to reduce latency as much as you can.

Speaker 2

In a sense, it feels like it might never be possible to match the sort of, like, speed of a centralized exchange that's just everything's kind of sitting in one one company server.

Speaker 2

And I think in a way that's, like, kind of who who Hyperliquid is really competing against right now.

Speaker 2

It's kind of more of like a small fish in a in a very big pond with all the sexes.

Speaker 2

So I'd be curious, like, kind of how how you view Hyperliquid's edge against some of these other centralized players where maybe you'll never be able to compete just on pure speed, but kind of what what else is gonna make the trading experience on Hyperliquid competitive or maybe even, you know, much better than than you could get on a centralized exchange despite being a little bit slower in a way.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I think the slowness I think I don't I don't think users think, like, a ten millisecond response time is 10 x worse than a one millisecond response time.

Speaker 0

So I don't actually think that's going to be, like, the ultimate Achilles heel.

Speaker 0

I just feel like DEXs will DEXs and blockchains will get fast enough, and users like, that will not be a differentiation point between centralized, decentralized.

Speaker 0

I think what will matter is that with a centralized exchange, you're you're really trusting, like, this one company, and you're not there's the obvious sense you're trusting them, which is that you're trusting them with your money, which which is a super big sense in which you're trusting them, but you're also trusting them to, like, kind of continue to innovate.

Speaker 0

And, I think they're good, but I think there's no way a centralized exchange can compete with a globally distributed community of builders.

Speaker 0

And there's two aspects.

Speaker 0

There's the cooperation of just you got Hyperliquid.

Speaker 0

We have zero idea how to market.

Speaker 0

We do not have a marketing department.

Speaker 0

It's just completely organic and community run.

Speaker 0

I think that community does an amazing job, better than the marketing departments of all these centralized exchanges.

Speaker 0

That's what I attribute Hyperliquid's amazing success to, is all these users kind of coming together around something that they believe in and really organically sort of chilling it from the bottom of their hearts, from, like, a KOL paycheck.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So and and it's still so early.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So, like, if if you imagine that going from, like, a niche crypto Twitter thing to, like, something much more global, like, you just you, like, cannot compete with that as as a central entity.

Speaker 0

And, obviously, there's there's a lot of difficulties with, like, doing something in a decentralized way.

Speaker 0

And I think that's that's why centralized exchanges have been so successful so far is that you get to basically cut a lot cut a lot of these corners, or or I guess you just kinda, like, get to not think about a lot of these problems.

Speaker 0

Like, you know, MEV is one of them, but, like, other things just like yeah.

Speaker 0

There's just, like, a lot of unsolved technical problems.

Speaker 0

Like, how do you how do you coordinate these validators?

Speaker 0

Like, do things that still allow for a seamless trading experience.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

And but I think all these can be solved, and it's also, like it's it's, like, a fun thing to solve.

Speaker 0

So think it's, like, smart people naturally are attracted to hard problems, and we'll solve them all.

Speaker 0

And so, yeah, I I would definitely bet on the global financial system being on a decentralized platform, like, owned by the people.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Just like with all the because there's there's there's a lot of really good points, like the ethos, the original ethos of of DeFi.

Speaker 0

Jeff,

Speaker 1

I want maybe we can transition into, you know, something like ecosystem design.

Speaker 1

And, you know, one question that like, theme that Monet and I are kind of poking at throughout this entire season is DeFi architectures which lean into more modular design.

Speaker 1

So we've been talking about this within the context of something like Uni v four, where instead of designing, you know, like, this is the v three instantiation of the protocol, you know, you are trying to attract a whole bunch of different AMM designers, right, within your kind of they've got a little bit of a vertically integrated structure at this point.

Speaker 1

Or something like Morpho instead of one, you know, instantiation of a borrow lend pool, you actually have a bunch of different, you know, isolated borrow lend pools.

Speaker 1

And I think that's what I kind of just heard you say that a core advantage of DeFi is that instead of relying on, you know, obviously, a very competent team that you've built, but you're actually going to leverage the creativity of everyone to build on top of Hyperliquid in general.

Speaker 1

So can you kind of paint a little bit of a a picture for that?

Speaker 1

What do you think about the idea of kind of building everything in house in one team versus, you know, kind of trying to attract other people to build things that you guys would never really thought of?

Speaker 1

How do you think about channeling that creative energy within the Hyperliquid ecosystem?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Our Hyperliquid has evolved a lot over the two years in which it's been growing.

Speaker 0

So, initially, it was, like you said, one team doing something is super efficient.

Speaker 0

So, like, let's just let's just iterate and, like, just build something that users love.

Speaker 0

And at this point, it's completely the opposite, which is that our thinking as the core team building sort of maintaining the protocol, sort of working on, like, protocol level stuff is that if something can be built by someone else, it should be built by someone else.

Speaker 0

And we take this very seriously because we're a super, super small team.

Speaker 0

So we're actually only 10 people, and that includes technical and nontechnical.

Speaker 0

And we just don't have capacity to, like, do almost anything.

Speaker 0

And I think that's, like, a that's actually, like, a blessing in disguise.

Speaker 0

Basically, if if a portal if a protocol can be set up in a way that it's it's, like, well architected so that people can come in and actually express what they want to express and plug into a permissionless protocol and do it, that's that's very powerful.

Speaker 0

Basically, they get to they get to leverage everything that exists underneath and basically just focus on their component of it.

Speaker 0

I think the the flip side here is, like, you can make this mistake by by building a protocol too early, and this has happened a lot in crypto as well.

Speaker 0

I think people get really excited, and they see there are these Web two examples.

Speaker 0

Like, platform businesses are are the biggest ones.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So you really need you you need a critical mass of users, and you need to really users and liquidity, I guess, in the case of DeFi, and you need to really abstract the you need to abstract away exactly what the builder needs.

Speaker 0

And it's hard to know what that is until, I guess, until you have users and sort of like genuine demand.

Speaker 0

It's bit of like the chicken and egg problem of markets in general.

Speaker 0

So Hyperliquid, I think, hit this inflection point maybe half a year to a year ago.

Speaker 0

And I think there there is just, like, this critical mass of people who wanna do things on it, and that's, like, really cool as a builder because I hear this kinda hanging.

Speaker 0

It's like it's like builders kind of maybe they they were doing stuff on the other chains, general purpose, and, like, come Hyperliquid, and they're like, wow.

Speaker 0

It's like all these people it's just it's like, oh, like, you know, alpha alpha alpha, like, pre alpha version of my protocol, like, launching in, like, one hour, it's like the the deposit cap I hit is, I I said, hit.

Speaker 0

It's it's it's like all this kind of there's just, like, so much latent demand to, like, do things.

Speaker 0

And, like, people know what the problems are.

Speaker 0

So also, it's not like people are coming in and, like, trying to create a problem before solving it.

Speaker 0

It's just like you come to Hyperliquid, and there's, like, all these things left open, like portfolio margin.

Speaker 0

Like, why can't I why can't I borrow against this asset and trade perps?

Speaker 0

Well, like, it's because a user could build it build it, and, like, it's you know, there's, like, other stuff happening at the protocol level that's more base layer.

Speaker 0

And so why shouldn't a user build this?

Speaker 0

And so teams coming in and trying to build that.

Speaker 0

Similar many examples across the board.

Speaker 0

Jeff,

Speaker 1

what do you think about one thing that I find really interesting about Hyperliquid is Hyperliquid is one of very, very few protocols we've built with this sequence, which is mostly what you see is protocols kind of build as a general purpose type platform.

Speaker 1

If you look at something like Ethereum, right, the idea is this is incredibly neutral, come build whatever you want here.

Speaker 1

And that worked when there weren't a lot of options.

Speaker 1

So kind of Ethereum and Solana both took that approach.

Speaker 1

What you're seeing from newer L1s is to say, hey, we can't do that anymore.

Speaker 1

There needs to be some sort of we need to solve a cold start problem of there being nothing to do with for users once we launch this new competing chain.

Speaker 1

And so you're starting to see chains like Barachain launch with a native stablecoin and a native DEX, basically, so that users have something to do, which was a little bit of a lesson learned from Cosmos maybe.

Speaker 1

So I'm kind of very curious what you think about this idea of first party applications versus purely third party applications and what the right mix is.

Speaker 1

Because if I had to maybe poke a little bit at the Hyperliquid strategy here is, let's say, I'm an app developer.

Speaker 1

I'm like, hey.

Speaker 1

This is amazing.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

I'm going to this ecosystem where there's already a huge DEX and tons of users and volume, etcetera.

Speaker 1

But how can I be sure that, you know, Hyperliquid won't roll out what I want to build as a feature?

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Because they have so much power in the ecosystem already.

Speaker 1

So how do you kind of thread that needle in between, okay.

Speaker 1

I've got the users and the liquidity, but maybe competing a little bit with application developers who you'd want to build in your ecosystem?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's a good question.

Speaker 0

So I'm not super familiar with the with the bearish in rollout, but I assume when you say native DEX, you mean, like, they built the DEX?

Speaker 1

They built the DEX.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

They built the DEX.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So that's different from point.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

But but that's, like, all sort of, like, EVM applications.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Like, they the team deployed some smart contracts and kind of enshrined them in that way.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Hyperliquid

So Hyperliquid's different there.

Speaker 0

The native side is not like it's not like the team decided to one day just put on their application developer hat and build some applications.

Speaker 0

It's more like I think that what people call native applications on Hyperliquid are, in my mind, more like infrastructure.

Speaker 0

So I think what Hyperliquid does is it basically I view it as a general purpose sort of like smart contract platform from the perspective of a builder.

Speaker 0

It's just that you have all these native things to interact with.

Speaker 0

Like, just like on Ethereum, there's a precompile to, let's say, like, compute a hash.

Speaker 0

It's a very expensive function.

Speaker 0

If you wrote this hash function in Solidity, it would take a lot of gas and you would never use it.

Speaker 0

But the protocol maintainers were like, You know what?

Speaker 0

Computing this hash is important enough.

Speaker 0

Let's just build a precompiled, let people call it, and cheaply compute it.

Speaker 0

So I think the line between No one says the Ethereum developers are building applications.

Speaker 0

What if you wrote a really good hash function in Solidity?

Speaker 0

No one's complaining about that, right?

Speaker 0

It's just like there's some things that are very clearly infrastructure and good for builders.

Speaker 0

And I just think Hyperliquid redefines that or pushes that boundary a bit to where I think it's more correct if you're really focusing on DeFi.

Speaker 0

And so in my mind, a perps, like a very liquid order book perps exchange where you can anyone can just, like, plug in and basic with, like, almost zero slippage, no long short majors.

Speaker 0

I think that's just, like, a public good.

Speaker 0

And there's no reas like, that's not something that's not that's that's that's just, like, so important as a building block that it should be almost like a hash function as, like, a precompile in in Solidity.

Speaker 0

And, like, I don't think I don't think it's that bad that a user can't come and build some AMM version of this BTC perp and be like, Man, I'm competing with the chain.

Speaker 0

That's just not something that users should be building.

Speaker 0

Users should be leveraging these core infrastructure things, build actually interesting things for for end users.

Speaker 0

And so I I I don't think there's this, like, competitive element, and I I think we've made it I think I think the the trajectory has been good.

Speaker 0

Like, basically, the stuff that sort of, like, Hyperliquid Labs works on these days are all trending to be basically, like, protocolized things.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Like, permissionless perps.

Speaker 0

Like, permissionless spot appointments came a lot earlier.

Speaker 0

But it's all these, like, it's like things to enable other people to do things.

Speaker 0

I'm like, yeah, like, someone else could build a protocol on the EVM, of course, but I think that you kinda have to draw the line somewhere.

Speaker 0

And so the thinking is always like, what is best for builders?

Speaker 0

And that is, I think that's very closely aligned to what's best for the protocol.

Speaker 0

Going back to my previous point, it's just like you have a global set of talented developers, you just enable them.

Speaker 0

Maybe one more thing I should add here is think one thing Hyperliquid does super differently from other protocols is we actually in designing how the protocol works, a really high priority is that builders should be able to monetize, basically, like participate in upside in a substantial way on what they do.

Speaker 0

So, like, spot players, for example, can keep up to 100% of the fees collected in the token in the base token, which is to say, like, 50% of the total fees on their pair.

Speaker 0

And, like, that's something that no exchange even if it's a central exchange, like, they they will never offer a team that.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So that encourages, like, really high quality innovative assets to deploy natively on Hyperliquid.

Speaker 0

Perps, same story.

Speaker 0

Obviously, not live yet, but, like, same story there.

Speaker 0

And I think this this theme, like, builder codes, like, if you build a UI, you can capture, like, more fees per trade than the protocol captures.

Speaker 0

Like, these these these are all, I think, things that do move the needle on, like, building trust with builders and sort of, like, just making it clear that protocol is here to support you and to basically, like, we we want you to build a build billion dollar business.

Speaker 0

We don't want to we we're not trying to get in the way.

Speaker 0

We're trying to, like, make that possible.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I'd love to ask, like, a follow-up on that.

Speaker 2

I think it's super interesting how the HyperEVM is obviously, like, a sort of just a very primitive, like, base layer protocol designed for people to build on top.

Speaker 2

And it's been really cool to see how HyperCore features like the spot markets.

Speaker 2

But then also now with builder deployed perps, it's kinda moving towards more of, a platform business take on it.

Speaker 2

I guess I'd be curious, like, how do you view for a builder deployed perps specifically?

Speaker 2

Do you think that there's, like, any sort of competitive pressure maybe implicitly between markets that are coming from from new builders making them versus from the sort of, like, Hyperliquid core team?

Speaker 2

And then do you have any ideas about how how you're thinking of, like, maintaining that high quality, unified, coherent UX across not just markets that, you know, we kind of all know are safe because they're from, like, the core team, but also from some of these, like, more longer tail builder deployed markets?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Good question.

Speaker 0

So the intention is not really to have a comp so it is it is a it is a permissionless protocol, people can deploy perps on sort of what they see fit.

Speaker 0

And it is the protocol is permissionless.

Speaker 0

So I can't exactly predict what will happen.

Speaker 0

That being said, the motivation behind it is that, basically, crypto perps are, like, such there are actually, like, so many innovations that go into Hyperliquid perps today.

Speaker 0

We're standing on the shoulders of giants.

Speaker 0

Mean, like, perps themselves are amazing innovation.

Speaker 0

There are a lot of other things.

Speaker 0

It is super narrow.

Speaker 0

And I think the time has kind of come where I think it should be up to builders to come in and say, how can we apply this primitive, this infrastructure?

Speaker 0

Our view purpose is kind like an infrastructure element.

Speaker 0

Like, what can we build with this infrastructure?

Speaker 0

So that's kind of the motivation.

Speaker 0

I expect people to just put up the exact same markets as validator operated perps and say, Hey, let's just try to compete.

Speaker 0

It just doesn't really make sense.

Speaker 0

I think there are various axes on which people can innovate, but the ultimate goal is for all of finance to be on Hyperliquid.

Speaker 0

I really think it's transparent.

Speaker 0

It's 20 fourseven.

Speaker 0

It's low latency.

Speaker 0

It's auditable.

Speaker 0

It has so many things going for it that it really is like it should be like a 10x upgrade on like, legacy financial systems.

Speaker 0

I think there's a long way to get there, but I think these builder deployed perps are a big step in that direction.

Speaker 1

I I wanna I know we're a little I we got a little bit of time left here, and we got so many more questions still to to ask you.

Speaker 1

Jeff, one one theme that we're very interested in this season is this idea of vertical integration.

Speaker 1

And when you look at a lot of the DEXs and Ethereum or in crypto today, you're starting to see a little bit of that.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Which is, like Uniswap is a really good example of of a protocol that started at the AMM layer, and they're kind of going up and down the stack, right, towards the distribution layer of having their own, you know, UI, like desktop UI and then their own wallet and then down the stack to their own chain.

Speaker 1

You can look at like the recent competition between pump fun and Radium in Solana is another good example.

Speaker 1

Jupiter

Jupiter is the same thing.

Speaker 1

And so, you know, I think especially like UI is super, super critical when it comes to exchanges, which is maybe what is the the sort of driving force here.

Speaker 1

But, you know, I'm curious on, you know, on your thoughts in general on the idea of vertical integration when it comes to DEXs, whether or not, you know, how Hyperliquid thinks about that, what areas of the stack are the most important for you to have, you know, direct control over.

Speaker 1

And then, you know, you mentioned at the beginning of this episode that or actually, I heard you in sorry, 0xResearch episode that I was listening to before this.

Speaker 1

You know, there are so many things that you need to get right.

Speaker 1

You need to design the right environment for traders, for market makers, but you also have to get the UI stuff right, which has been a real challenge in the perps space so far, obviously, until, you guys have done a really good job on moving the ball forward there.

Speaker 1

But talk to me about how you think about vertical integration in general and then UI, right?

Speaker 1

Like, what important to get right from a trader's perspective here?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So I think vertical integration is obviously super good as a business decision.

Speaker 0

If you're just a traditional company, you want to own as much of the stack as possible.

Speaker 0

I think it's like part of that is just like it's often unclear where the value accrues, but another part of that is just reducing the overhead of and if you have many people you need to rely on to uphold their part of the deal, then your ultimate user experience is only as good as the weakest link in that chain.

Speaker 0

And I think that's also true in crypto, but I think there's a bit more tension in crypto, which is that sort of owning the full stack is also a bit antithetical to, I think, the like, what DeFi should be.

Speaker 0

Like, I think DeFi is more resilient if there are multiple possible choices at each layer of the stack.

Speaker 0

And so if any one of them, you know, is compromised or just goes down or, like, whatever, like, loses it starts going in one direction and, like, stops prioritizing the right things that that like, ultimately, you you can find some path through these so, like, different options at each step.

Speaker 0

You can, like, find some path that's, like, still pretty good.

Speaker 0

I think that that, like, creates a much more robust financial system.

Speaker 0

So it kinda depends what you're optimizing for.

Speaker 0

From Hyperliquid's perspective, I don't I don't think it's, like, a huge basically, like, we we we never even seriously entertained the idea of building everything in finance.

Speaker 0

And so I think when the like, when the vision is that big, it it's, like, necessarily built by many people.

Speaker 0

And I'm very bullish personally on, like, coordination through protocols, not through, like, management.

Speaker 0

It's like you have, like, a 10,000 person company, you probably build all the finance.

Speaker 0

Like, everyone's super good and coordinated and whatever, but, like, I just I just feel like that's that's a I just don't see that happening in the real world.

Speaker 0

And so, like, the next best thing is, like, 10,000 people coordinating across, you know, a thousand companies, like, each building their own pieces and, like, a thoughtfully designed protocol to coordinate those efforts.

Speaker 0

And I think that's where I see Hyperliquid being.

Speaker 0

And yeah, I think it's just like the end state is so massively impactful.

Speaker 0

It's just such a valuable enterprise as a whole finance that I don't think it matters if Hyperliquid doesn't need to capture of it.

Speaker 0

That's like a super greedy perspective, I think.

Speaker 0

I think if you're like, yeah, I'm doing this one super small segment, yeah, maybe you actually care about squeezing out every last bit of profit for your shareholders or whatever.

Speaker 0

But when you're building a protocol to power all the finance, I think the perspective is more like, you know, it's just like like, let's just, like, grow the pie.

Speaker 0

And, you know, if if this thing if this thing is to succeed, like, everyone's going to be, like, so happy that, yeah, it doesn't matter.

Speaker 2

There's maybe one area of, like, sort of vertical integration that we've seen across a lot of exchanges that I'd be curious for your take on, which is we've seen a lot of, like, centralized exchanges try to capture some of the economics from the stablecoin balances that are held on exchange.

Speaker 2

So Coinbase has this very lucrative distribution ex agreement with Circle where they get a lot of the the carry.

Speaker 2

Binance several different times has tried to either partner or kind of like white label their own stablecoin to capture some of that huge amount of of, like, yield that's just latently being generated on all the the stables that are on their exchange.

Speaker 2

And I think that's a really interesting angle because it's taking money that's completely outside of it's not, like, taking from builders or users.

Speaker 2

It's just taking money from basically the US government and injecting it into your ecosystem.

Speaker 2

So I'm curious if, like, Hyperliquid has any if you have any thoughts about, you know, how to capture some of this economic juice from all the USDC on chain on Hyperliquid, whether that's, you agreements with Circle or with Coinbase or maybe even having another kind of white labeled stablecoin or something like that.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It's not currently something we're working on.

Speaker 0

I think your question sort of highlights the point that there's just so much low hanging fruit that It's kind of hard to believe, but yeah, there are billions of dollars of stables sitting on Hyperliquid, but up until now, the priority has not been That has actually not been the low hanging fruit.

Speaker 0

Yeah, that's maybe more than $100,000,000 of yield at this point.

Speaker 0

But also, protocol makes annualized about five to 10 x that.

Speaker 0

I you know, I I don't know the exact details.

Speaker 0

Like, not enough data points exactly to extrapolate a year, but but I think you get my point, which is, like, there's there's just, like, so many things to do.

Speaker 0

And, yeah, I think I think it'll be cool eventually for the protocol slash users to be able to have all all sorts of benefits.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

And I think this is what kind of what happens when all of finance moves onto one chain.

Speaker 0

So you get to kind of if that chain is designed thoughtfully and not greedily, not as a sort of company maximizing extraction, but rather a company maximizing just cool shit that can be done, then, yeah, I think I think all this stuff becomes possible.

Speaker 1

Okay, Jeff.

Speaker 1

We're nearing the end of our time here.

Speaker 1

So maybe closing question and building on the question that Monet just asked.

Speaker 1

I'm curious what you think about the role of stablecoins versus the role of hype, the token, in your ecosystem design.

Speaker 1

And specifically, I think you know, Hyperliquid is a really interesting example here where, you know, even if you look at something like Ethereum, like the way that they thought of value accrual for Eth the asset was that it was going to be used as this store value or medium of exchange kind of money.

Speaker 1

And in the early days, you saw a lot of even still today, right, if you trade NFTs, it's typically NFTs are denominated in something like Ethereum.

Speaker 1

But a lot of the early use cases for something like Uniswap is the pair was ETH, right, in a lot of these AMMs, something V1.

Speaker 1

And gradually, that's kind of moved over time or shifted over time towards more dollar denominated trading pairs on l twos, especially as they kind of try to go out and get new customers from the world who mostly hold dollars instead of something like ETH.

Speaker 1

And so it's interesting, you know, Hyperliquid maybe developed in reverse order than a lot of exchanges on on place like Ethereum or Solana, right, where you started from day one with USDC and dollars at the core.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Because that's what your customers wanted.

Speaker 1

But now you also have a token hype.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

And it seems like the way that you think about value accrual there is buybacks.

Speaker 1

But I'm just curious how you think about this that like, have you ever thought about, like, making hype kind of more of a a trading pair or a core part of the ecosystem?

Speaker 1

Or how do you, yeah, kind of balance this desire for customers to trade with dollar, basically dollars, versus value accrual for hype?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I think the money thesis of a native asset is probably not something you can force.

Speaker 0

So I don't think you can, as a team, you can go and say, You know what?

Speaker 0

I think I'm gonna build money.

Speaker 0

And it's just like Money is one of the most elusive things in the world.

Speaker 0

Humanity's, I think, one of the greatest inventions.

Speaker 0

It's the greatest coordination invention.

Speaker 0

And I think it was the source of a lot of human progress, but also it's not something you can directly build.

Speaker 0

You can build it kind of by building a country.

Speaker 0

It's something that US had to do a super good job.

Speaker 0

The dollar is a super good product.

Speaker 0

Or you can build it like Bitcoin, like like Satoshi kind of did, which is let's just build some interesting tech.

Speaker 0

And this technology is, like, so groundbreaking that, yeah, maybe you you have a chance to create something that's that's like money.

Speaker 0

But yeah, otherwise, I don't I don't know.

Speaker 0

I mean, I think I think hype will be money if all the finance moves on the Hyperliquid.

Speaker 0

But but, yeah, we're we're kinda focused on the latter because that's actionable.

Speaker 0

And so I I think that, yeah, trading against hype, like I don't know.

Speaker 0

I'm not I think people talk about it a lot, but I I think genuinely what like, people think in dollars, in in crypto at least.

Speaker 0

And but I think broadly around the world, like, people kind of prefer to denominate in dollars.

Speaker 0

And I don't think that's some Like, if you say, if you come on this platform, you're trading in hype, then I think probably what happens is people stop going to the platform.

Speaker 0

And I think it's like, ultimately, it's kind of what people want.

Speaker 0

So I think sort of, like, technologically, they're both assets on this decentralized ledger, and I I guess time will tell.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

Jeff, we could go for another hour here, but you've already been super generous with your time, and I know we gotta wind it down.

Speaker 1

This was great, man.

Speaker 1

Thank you for coming on the podcast.

Speaker 1

If folks wanna find out more about Hyperliquid or follow you or just keep updated with the work that you're doing, what's the best way to do that?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

There's a Hyperliquid Twitter you can follow at Hyperliquid x, and I'm at chameleon underscore Jeff.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

This is the real alpha.

Speaker 1

Why chameleon, Jeff?

Speaker 1

I love to ask people with interesting Twitter handles.

Speaker 1

What's the what's the alpha behind

Speaker 0

I think they're really cool animals.

Speaker 0

So I don't I don't know how well known this is, but they're they're, like, they're just, like, so interesting.

Speaker 0

They're, you know, like, they're one of the only animals where the their eyes can point in different directions, like independently controlled.

Speaker 0

And they're one of I think they're one of the only lizards that have, like, two claws forward and three claws back, which shows, like, a very interesting evolutionary trajectory.

Speaker 0

And they also have, like, a really powerful tongue, which is, like, pretty cool.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

They just, like and they change colors, obviously.

Speaker 0

I mean, that's the that's a well known thing.

Speaker 0

So, yeah, I think they're just, like, they're I've always been really fascinated by them.

Speaker 0

They're kind of like aliens on Earth.

Speaker 0

So, yeah, that's that's it.

Speaker 0

None nothing more than just respect for the animal.

Speaker 1

So listeners of Belkrav, this why you gotta stick around to the end of the episode always because you thought you were getting an interview on Hyperliquid here, but you're also gonna learn about chameleons.

Speaker 1

So that's why you stick around.

Speaker 1

Jeff, this has been really fun, man.

Speaker 1

Thank you so much for coming on the show.

Speaker 1

We'll have to do it again sometime soon.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Thanks for having me.

Speaker 0

It was a fun conversation.

Speaker 2

Cheers.

Speaker 2

Thank

Speaker 1

you.

Speaker 1

好了。

Alright.

Speaker 1

Monet, what an interview, man.

Speaker 1

I can see why everyone's so hype on Hyperliquid.

Speaker 1

That was great.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

不是。

No.

Speaker 2

That was that was fun.

Speaker 2

Definitely got a little more bulled up after hearing Jeff.

Speaker 1

Same.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, I thought you know, it was interesting.

Speaker 1

We kind of went into this interview, and I was very focused on at least kind of vertical integration and not thinking about some of the other themes of the season.

Speaker 1

But it felt like we ended up talking a lot about this kind of idea of modular design and fragmentation.

Speaker 1

And it seems like Jeff is highly focused on leveraging not just the creativity of his team, which has done very well executing on the vision thus far, but also leveraging the collective creativity and builder and entrepreneurial talent of crypto.

Speaker 1

And, you know, it's kind of interesting.

Speaker 1

They've they've approached Hyperliquid from the exact opposite direction of more general purpose platforms like Ethereum or Solana.

Speaker 1

And they've kind of started with the monetization and the product which generates the fees, and now they're trying to bootstrap the ecosystem around it as opposed to some the earlier smart contract platform, which really started with the ecosystem and the community and then encouraged them to build a bunch of ideas.

Speaker 1

And so I'm curious when you think about that approach, how do you weigh the the pros and cons of the way that Hyperliquid is going about it versus a more general smart contracting platform like Solana or Ethereum?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I mean, I I think you mentioned in the show, like, that's Ethereum and and Solana to another extent.

Speaker 2

Like, they had the luxury of, being early.

Speaker 2

So, you know, they they could just kinda build it, the builders will come and and, you know, build on them because there weren't, you know, a wealth of other opportunities.

Speaker 2

But, I think that in a way, Hyperliquid, they kind of they were very smart because, they recognized you can't just launch an ecosystem or a platform from day one.

Speaker 2

There needs to be a hook to acquire users, and, their, you know, perps, markets, I think, have been been that hook.

Speaker 2

And it also gives the platform, like, some really solid economics to, to get people excited about, from the start.

Speaker 2

But I I think it's also it's gonna be very interesting because it feels they're still quite early in, sort of transitioning from, really a product focus, just having the best perps exchange that you can in DeFi to more of a platform focus, being somewhere that builders can come and and, you know, make their vision happen.

Speaker 2

So I think it's yeah.

Speaker 2

There's still seems like, Jeff was, like, really he had a an eye to all of these challenges that you you have, the tensions between those, but, it's still very early in that process.

Speaker 2

So it you know, it's tough to see if, they've they've run into these these challenges yet.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I I think that Hyperliquid actually is way ahead of its time in figuring this.

Speaker 1

And that's actually the trend that I think you see in not only new mostly new L twos in general, but also new L1s that are launching.

Speaker 1

They're saying, Hey, it's a completely different market structure than it used to be when Ethereum and Solana launched.

Speaker 1

As everyone from Barachain launching with their own DEX to Honey, their own native stablecoin, that's new platforms like the MegaEats of the world where it's not just like, hey, everyone.

Speaker 1

They're very concentrated accelerator programs where they're maybe king making is too strong of a word, but they're really putting their resources behind a couple of very high quality teams.

Speaker 1

And so you're seeing different iterations on this.

Speaker 1

And I think this idea of first versus third party apps is gonna be a huge a huge topic when it comes to ecosystem design in general.

Speaker 1

And I think that Hyperliquid basically absolutely nailed the meta, and they were way ahead of their time.

Speaker 1

Then the I think the rub is it's ultimately gonna come down to that question that we were kind of asking.

Speaker 1

I thought you had a a very interesting question to ask, which is, one, there's Hyperliquid's probably going to have to reassure its its complements that it's not going to try to compete with them.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

So, okay, there's hundreds of millions of dollars of fees which are being generated from stablecoins.

Speaker 1

Like, is Hyperliquid going to try to take those, or is it going to let someone else build?

Speaker 1

And so I think maybe it has to demonstrate that it's willing to let builders come in and take money on the floor.

Speaker 1

This is just kind of sitting out there on the floor.

Speaker 1

And then also, I thought you had a really interesting question around how do you ensure the standards of third party app developers?

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

This was actually a challenge for the App Store in the early days and why Apple you know, it'd be interesting to go back and look at Apple's first party versus third party app strategy because in the beginning, it was a little bit more permissionless.

Speaker 1

Then it's like, woah, there are a lot of apps in here which are not creating a great user experience.

Speaker 1

And I'm getting complaints from users that when I download this third party app that I'm getting scammed or it's a bad UX.

Speaker 1

And so they got much more stringent around standards.

Speaker 1

And so it'll be interesting to see whether or not Hyperliquid goes from a more, hey, anyone can sort of build here to a more prescriptive approach in terms of basically just generating a good unified user experience.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I think it's it's really interesting you mentioned that because I think they're almost they're like kind of doing both of those at once, like, two different strategies.

Speaker 2

So the HyperEVM, fully permissionless to deploy, at least for now.

Speaker 2

Maybe they'll change that in the future, but, it's just permissionless.

Speaker 2

And then for their builder deployed perps, which are still on test net but, expected, like, soon, I think, there's, like, this big, staking requirements.

Speaker 2

So you're putting up some capital to secure the market.

Speaker 2

And then you also have to, like, bid, to to essentially, like, have the right to make a market.

Speaker 2

So I think it's it's interesting that they're kind of doing a more curated approach for some of these, like, HyperCore features like the perps markets, but then also doing the permission list.

Speaker 2

And I think there's still gonna be some challenges that you see with this platform model even with the more curated ones.

Speaker 2

Like, I know Jeff said, like, okay, I don't expect people to be launching, you know, another Bitcoin perp market that competes directly with the ones that already exist.

Speaker 2

But what if, you know, a builder deploys some new long tail market, that ends up becoming very popular?

Speaker 2

You know, is is that something that, like, the sort of core markets are gonna try and compete with?

Speaker 2

Are there gonna be several builders who are all chasing after the same market?

Speaker 2

How do you deal with the sort of, like, fragmentation in liquidity, but also just in kind of mind share and and, user experience?

Speaker 2

So I think there's there's gonna be a lot of, interesting challenges when the, when the rubber meets meets the road on this.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's gonna be fascinating to watch watch their approach to that.

Speaker 1

And, you know, when we were discussing ecosystem design as well, I think that the question of stablecoins is probably the most interesting one because as you as you pointed out, yeah, USDC actually is a huge source of revenue for Coinbase, you know, through the rev share that they get through the center consortium and circle.

Speaker 1

And so this will be and and actually a huge distribution strategy in general for stablecoins is leveraging an exchange.

Speaker 1

So it'll be interesting to see what happens when a native stablecoin comes to Hyperliquid, which I'm sure is probably inevitable.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Is this something that Hyperliquid is going to try to take a rake on in the same way that Coinbase does or whatever?

Speaker 1

It'll just be interesting to see how that ends up playing out.

Speaker 1

But the other thing that I thought was interesting was talking about just ecosystem design around hype, the token, and dollar assets as a trading pair.

Speaker 1

And I thought Jeff was Yeah, I largely agree with Jeff here and I think that the division that they have is super interesting.

Speaker 1

I've had some This has been a core question of the rollup centric roadmap in ETH, and it's now increasingly coming up within Solana as well, which is what is the rollup SOL token.

Speaker 1

But, you know, the question there being, okay, there's a little bit of attention here because we wanted to ship ETH up to L2s where it was going to be used as a trading pair, and that created a lot of the buy pressure for ETH in the early days.

Speaker 1

But L2s are like, hey, I want to go out and attract new users and they want to hold dollars and trade with dollars as a trading pair.

Speaker 1

Hyperliquid

And that's obviously how Hyperliquid started.

Speaker 1

And so their solution to that was, well, we do have an exchange which is generating a tonne of fees, so we're going to do buybacks.

Speaker 1

And so that was kind of like the burn mechanism as a value accrual method for Ethan that really is.

Speaker 1

So it was interesting to hear him stratify kind of the the difference in between how he thinks about dollars in the ecosystem versus the role of hype, the token.

Speaker 1

But I'd be curious what you thought about that and whether or not we can extrapolate that kind of clean division in between, you know, across, you know, like the Ethereum or the Solanas or the L2s of the world as well.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I thought I thought he was dead on about when when we were talking about, like, you know, is your token money?

Speaker 2

And Jeff said, you can't really you can't build for money.

Speaker 2

It's just not actionable.

Speaker 2

So he was like, you know what?

Speaker 2

We're just going to focus on shipping the best experiences, you know, the best, yeah, the best, like, products and and platform that we can.

Speaker 2

And I think that that, yeah.

Speaker 2

It feels like Ethereum maybe has gotten too focused on Ether's money.

Speaker 2

Like, you know, I own a lot of this.

Speaker 2

I hope it becomes money at some point, but it's really not not super actionable.

Speaker 2

So I think that was, like, a really refreshing and and kind of, like, the right viewpoint to have.

Speaker 2

One thing that I I think is really quite different from Ether Solana, and I'm not sure it's really replicatable from these just more general purpose, chains, is that Hyperliquid has this sort of, like, native app side of things.

Speaker 2

They have the HyperCore perps where you can get you can stake to get reductions in, trading fees, or you can stake to be able to deploy a perp as a, you know, the builder deployed perp market.

Speaker 2

And you even need to bid in hype to be able to, like, sort of, like, win the the right to deploy a perp market.

Speaker 2

And I'm sure there's gonna be more of these in the future as well.
