Hello, my friends.
Welcome back to another episode of Better with Doctor.
Stephanie.
It's me, your host, Doctor.
Stephanie Estima。
Stephanie Estima.
And today is just you and me, and we are gonna be talking about hypermobility by popular demand.
So many of you have wrote in, reached out, and said, can you please talk about hypermobility because that is my issue.
If you can touch your thumb to your forearm or if when you lock out your elbows, they bend backwards, or you've ever been called double jointed like it was a party trick, this episode is for you.
Or maybe you're a coach, and you have a client who can fold in half like a lawn chair, but somehow tweaks their back by putting on their socks, this episode is also for you because we are gonna talk about what hypermobility actually is, why just stretching more or taking it easy might be the worst advice that you have ever gotten, and why building muscle is not optional for this population.
It is actually foundational, and what we're gonna talk about today is how to train if you're hypermobile.
We're gonna talk about nutrition strategies and recovery.
So if you think that you're naturally flexible or maybe you in a past life, you were a dancer or a gymnast, maybe you're currently a yogi, and maybe your joints, they click, they pop, they shift, or they feel really loose.
Or even if you've had recurring injuries that seem to move around your body and you have pain that doesn't really make sense, flexibility is one of the most misunderstood traits in fitness, and we've actually been taught to celebrate flexibility.
It's like more mobility, more stretching, more range of motion.
But for this population, the problem is not that you are too tight.
Your problem is that you are too loose.
So in your case, the answer is not gonna be stretching or mobility.
It's going to be building more muscle so that you can actually impart more stability.
I think we need to stop talking about collagen simply as a beauty supplement because healthy aging and aging like a boss isn't just about how you look.
It's about what your body can still do.
And when most women hear the word collagen, they think about skin, like fewer wrinkles and better elasticity and looking younger.
And, yes, sure, collagen can absolutely support your skin.
That's only part of the story.
Collagen is a structural protein throughout your entire body, including your joints, your tendons, your ligaments, and your bones.
So as we get older, collagen shouldn't just be a conversation about how we look.
It should be a conversation about how we move, how we feel, and how strong we remain for the remainder of our lives.
And that's what makes AlgaeCal collagen different from a typical beauty collagen supplement.
Instead of just relying on one generic collagen source, it combines four specialized clinically studied collagen, and the four are Verisol, FortiGel, UC two, and FortiBone.
These together are backed by 25 human clinical studies, including 18 double blind placebo controlled trials.
AlgaeCal brings all of those together in one formula.
So you're supporting things that you can see, like your skin, your hair, and your nails, sure, while also supporting the things that keep you active, like your joints and your bones.
Because looking good is great, but being able to keep moving and exercising and traveling and doing the things that you love over the course of your life, that is aging like a boss.
AlgaeCal is flavorless and dissolves easily into your morning coffee or your smoothie.
If you wanna try it, AlgaeCal collagen is offering my listeners 10% off their first purchase.

Enjoy.
So let's start by defining what is hypermobility.
Okay?
So simply, hypermobility are joints that move beyond what's typically considered a normal range of motion.
So this can be in one joint, or it can be many.
So this is where the Beighton score comes in as the common screening tool.
So it's a nine point scale.
It looks at your thumbs, your pinkies, your elbows, your knees, how far you can forward fold.
And it doesn't it's not a diagnostic tool on its own, but it is often used as a screening tool.
And there are three tiers of hypermobility.
So the first is just joint hypermobility.
So you have flexible joints, and there's no symptoms.
So many dancers, many gymnasts, many yogis live here very comfortably.
The second point on that tier is hypermobility spectrum disorder or HSD.
So this is the flexible joints that we just talked about, but it's also symptoms.
It's also pain and instability and frequent tweaks and fatigue.
And then the third part on that scale is hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome or hEDS.
This is a genetic connective tissue condition with hypermobility as one feature among broader clinical picture.
So you're going to have skin issues, GI issues, cardiovascular issues, dysautonomia in some cases.
So to be clear, this is not a diagnostic scale.
If you suspect hEDS specifically, this is a conversation that you need to have with a geneticist or a rheumatologist familiar with connective tissue disorders.
I don't want you getting all of your information just from this podcast.
But the core idea that I'm trying to get across is that hypermobility exists on a spectrum, and the hypermobility itself is not actually the problem.
The problem is the instability that it confers.
So your flexibility unto itself is not dangerous, but rather moving through a huge range of motion without any control is where things often go sideways.
So hypermobility, just to summarize, simply means that a joint is moving beyond what is considered a normal range of motion.
So this can happen for a couple reasons.
The shape of your bones allow it.
That's one thing.
The ligaments are more elastic.
That's what most people will associate with hypermobility.
Your connective tissue as a whole is more compliant or a combination of all of those things.
And women in particular are much more likely than men to have hypermobility because of how estrogen affects our connective tissue.
So estrogen, I've talked about this a little bit before, but it increases something called ligament laxity.
So this just makes our ligaments a bit more loosey goosey.
And it's usually it's why generally women are more flexible than men, and it's also why women experience more joint instability compared to our male counterparts.
Everybody ooze and ahs over the, you know, the deep held yoga pose, but nobody's talking about this woman's shoulder that keeps, you know, subluxing.
So everyone loves the deep squat, but no one talks about the hips that are constantly aching.
So we wanna really be thinking about not necessarily celebrating only the flexibility.
We have to celebrate and move towards stability because it's the stability piece that keeps you functioning.
So let's actually break down how somebody can be hypermobile.
When we think about stability, most people think about muscles.
And, of course, muscles are a part of the picture, but I wanna introduce you to passive and active stabilizers.
Okay?
So passive stabilizers are things that you cannot contract.
You have no voluntary control over them.
These are the structures that create stability without effort.
They don't you don't have any conscious access to them.
So these are things like your ligaments, your bones, your joint capsules, your cartilage, and your fascia.
Their job is to provide static stability.
So they hold the bones together at rest without needing to turn on or off.
So in hypermobile bodies, these passive structures are often more extensible.
So this is usually connective tissue mediated.
So the collagen structure and the ratios can play a role.
Although I will say that the exact mechanism is not exactly known, and they aren't fully under I mean, there's so much individual variability as well.
So passive structures have very little say in controlling a joint through movement.
They're more like the they're more like the guardrails.
Like, they're more like the ropes holding up a tent.
Or if you think about them as guardrails, like, it's you're not the car on the road.
You're the guardrails on the side of the highway to make sure that you don't like, you don't drive off the highway.
So within those categories, I don't I wanna touch just briefly on bones.
So we we can't contract our bones.
Bones are very, very important.
The only reason why bones move is because we have the muscles and tendons that are moving them.
But your bony structure can also contribute to hypermobility.
So for example, think about your hip, a deep hip socket.
So if you have a so in the acetabular joint, if you have a very deep hip socket, that is going to provide a tremendous amount of stability.
A shallow socket is gonna provide a lot less.
So your bone shape also contributes to whether or not you have a tendency towards hypermobility.
And the ligaments, which is what everybody thinks about when we think about hypermobility, their job is to provide that restraint at the end ranges.
So it's like the guardrails on the highway that I was saying, or they're like seat belts.
They're not supposed to drive the car.
They're supposed to stop disaster.
But if your ligaments are too loosey goosey or in nerd speak, we would call that compliance.
If your ligaments are too compliant, they cannot protect the joints from moving too much.
So just like, you know, an old elastic band, if you've ever had a slinky toy when you were younger and it stretched out, it's kind of like that.
And I don't even know like, I have the it's so funny.
Like, as I'm saying slinky, I literally have the jingle of it in my head.
It has been living rent free.
Have you guys remember this?
Do you guys remember the walks downstairs?
A loner in pairs that makes the slinky sound.
A spring.
A spring.
A marvelous thing.
Everyone knows it's slinky.
Oh my god.
That, like, I don't know where I found that in my mind mansion, but there we go.
The marketing geniuses have had that jingle living in my head for the last thirty years.
But what I was saying was if you have, like, a stretched out slinky, it doesn't go down alone or impaired.
You know, it doesn't go down the stairs in the same way.
It's sort of like an old stretched out elastic band.
K?
So those are your passive stabilizers.
Your active stabilizers, these are structures that create stability dynamically through movement.
So if you can't contract your fascia, you can't contract your connective tissue, you can't contract your ligaments.
On the contrary, active stabilizers, you can contract.
K?
So think of your muscles, your tendons, the neuromuscular system as a whole, your nervous system, proprioception, like your joint position sense, your motor control, and your reflexive stabilization.
Their job is to provide dynamic stability.
So that is controlling joints as they are moving, especially near the end range.
And so that system has to do more work when the passive structures are lax, when they're more compliant.
And the good news for my hypermobile girlies is that you actually have more voluntary control over these structures.
So muscle is the obvious one.
They obviously generate force.
They control movement.
They are the structures that move your bone.
Tendons, of course, are the bookends, if you will, of muscle.
They tether the muscle to the bone.
They also transmit force, and they significantly contribute to joint stiffness.
And the other system that I don't think a lot of people talk about is your nervous system.
Your nervous system is constantly monitoring your joint position, your speed, your load, the threat, and then coordinating the muscular responses to it.
So your brain is, like, literally constantly running the stabilization algorithm every single second of your life.
And for my hypermobile women, you typically have what we would call, again, nerd speak proprioceptive deficits, which just means that people with joint hypermobility often have a reduced, joint position sense that they may not accurately feel when when a joint is moving in space, especially near the end range.
And this is why the you know, a lot of women will say, I don't know.
I keep rolling my ankle or I keep dislocating my shoulder.
I keep tweaking my knee.
Like, that pattern goes on and on and on because those you can't actually feel when you're getting to that end range.
You don't necessarily feel pain or there's no warning until something has already gone past where it should have.
And there isn't any, like, internal GPS or internal alarm system at the end range in the way that there is for someone with typical ligament ligamentous tone, we'll say.
So this is also a reason why a lot of women with hypermobility have pain.
Because if your passive stabilizers are weak, your active stabilizers, so the muscle, the tendon, your nervous system has to work a lot harder.
So if your ligaments are more compliant than the average person, your muscles now have to pick up the slack, like, you know, pun intended, like, literally.
Your nervous system has to monitor much more aggressively, which, you know, gobbles up more energy.
Your tendons have to tolerate more load.
And so everything downstream has to work harder.
So for a woman, and this is, like, a key point that I want you to get, if you are someone with hypermobility, strength training then becomes less of a nice to have to more of a primary treatment strategy, especially if you have symptomatic hypermobility.
Like, if you keep getting injured, your active stabilization system is the first line intervention to preventing injury because you can't rely on your passive system alone.
If you're navigating perimenopause or midlife, you've probably noticed shifts in your energy, your recovery, and even that underlying fatigue that can be hard to explain.
One compound I've really been focused on lately is spermidine.
As we age, our natural production of spermidine declines, and that matters because spermidine activates something called autophagy, which is your body's cellular renewal process, and also mitophagy, which also helps clear out damaged, old, slow mitochondria, and it helps to support healthy energy production.
And since your mitochondria are responsible for powering every single cell in your body, this is going to directly impact how you feel, so your energy, your resilience, and your vitality.
I love and use primadine from Oxford Healthspan because it delivers a food derived polyamine matrix, meaning that you're getting spermidine in its natural form alongside other polyamines that work synergistically with it.
It's simple, and it's a foundational way for you to support your cognitive function, your cellular health, and sustained energy as you age.

I have been obsessed with OneSkin for a while now, so I jumped with joy when they said they were sending me their new OS-one face rich cream to try out.
And it has been exactly what my skin has been craving.
Now, you know, in your forties, maybe your fifties, if you're lucky, this is the decade that your skin starts changing on you.
It gets drier.
It stops bouncing back.
Makeup starts sitting weird, and you start wondering what you're doing wrong.
I mean, I know at least I was doing that.
But this isn't a unique problem.
There's something actually shifting underneath the surface.
Your skin is losing the collagen.
It's losing the elastin and the hyaluronic acid that keep it firm and hydrated in the first place.
This is a process that two female founders and longevity scientists at OneSkin are calling the density shift.
Now this new rich cream is what they developed for exactly that moment.
So it's the same peptide technology that you already love.
It's getting rid of all the senescent cells, but now it's been formulated to go deeper than any normal cream.
And it's proven to actually build up your skin's own collagen and elastin and hyaluronic acid.
So your skin is now gonna look more firmer, more hydrated, and visibly smoother over time.
It's the kind of deep replenishing hydration that your skin needs.
It's nourishing.
It's long lasting, and it holds all day without feeling too heavy or too greasy.
Now I have been using the RICH CREAM now at night, every night for two weeks, and I can tell you right away that my skin is dewier and hydrated the next morning.
And the most important thing for me is that my makeup is not taking anymore.
My skin was, like, cracking and getting all dry sort of in my t zone.
I had assumed that it was the foundation, but it was actually my skin.
Born from over ten years of skin longevity research, OneSkin is helping you unlock your healthiest skin now as you age.

After you purchase, they are gonna ask you where you heard about them.
Please, pretty please with a cherry on top, please tell them that you found them through me.
So let's get into let's get a little nerdy.
Let's speak nerdy to me, and we're gonna talk about why that is.
Okay?
So the first thing is when you have more muscle and more control, you are going to have an increase in what's called joint centration.
And that's just, again, nerd speak for essentially alignment of the joint.
If you have strong muscles around a joint, it helps to keep the joint centered in the socket instead of drifting towards those end ranges where passive structures, in your case that are already lax, are doing all the work.
So that's one reason.
Another reason is when we develop more muscle, you are going to develop more compensation for reduced proprioception.
So without kind of going too far off into nerd land here, but there are structures inside the muscle called muscle spindles.
There's also the GTOs, the Golgi tendon organs, which also they're embedded either within the tendon or the muscle belly, and they also contribute to position sense.
So if I were to say to you, like, close your eyes, and then, like, I'm closing my eyes now for those of you that are watching on YouTube.
好。
Okay.
So if I say close your eyes and make a 90 degree angle with your elbow, like, I'm not using my visual system to do that.
I'm using my proprioception.
So my joint position space is telling my brain.
And if I open and I check, yeah, I'm about at 90 degrees.
So we have the GTOs, those Golgi tendon organs, muscle spindles, those contribute to position sense.
They tell your brain where you are as the as the muscle is moving.
And when you are strength training, especially when you are utilizing tempo and control, that is going to improve your brain's map of where the joint is.
So it's literally building back in the brain some of that missing internal feedback that you're not getting from your ligaments.
When you are building more muscle, you are also gonna reduce the reliance on the ligamentous end range.
So a well conditioned muscle can decelerate, so slow down, come to a stop, and control movement before the joint reaches its structural end range.
And that is going to help protect the joint capsule and the ligaments from repetitive overstretching.
Because remember, your ligaments are literally not firing up to the brain and telling your brain, hey.
This is too much, so you need your muscles to take over and do that.
And then the other thing I'll mention is that when you develop your muscles right?
So when you develop the neuromuscular system and building strong muscles, you are going to improve your load tolerance over time.
So what I mean by that is connective tissue, so your tendons and to a lesser degree, your ligaments adapt to progressive mechanical loading through like, and they do it much slower than muscle does.
But consistently dosed appropriate progressive overload through strength training over months and months and months supports more tissue resilience.
So my personal philosophy here with hypermobile women I mean, just hypermobility in general, but I'm talking to you, my hypermobile girlies, is that your mobility and stability are not separate categories.
For a hypermobile body specifically, strength is the mobility program.
Okay?
So if you are hypermobile, your strength training is your mobility program.
Okay?
You don't get to opt out of one and lean on the other.
You have to strength train.
So often when I say that, usually, there's some fear that comes up.
A lot of hypermobile women are will tell me that they are scared of lifting heavy because they've been told that they're fragile or they're they're worried about getting injured.
And that is a real fear.
But I wanna reframe this for you and gently and lovingly point out that your fragility comes from undertrained tissue around the lax joints, not from the lifting itself.
Like, you have to modify how you lift, and we're gonna talk a little bit about that.
But strength you must actively and aggressively chase strength training and muscle hypertrophy and strength because you don't have any other systems to rely on.
So first thing that you're gonna do if you are actively and aggressively pursuing muscle strength, which you should be, is you are not gonna train in a full range of motion.
Okay?
So for standard strength training advice often says, you know, train full ROM for tendon and for joint health, and that's true.
But that default advice needs a bit of a asterisk or a caveat for my hypermobile bodies.
The issue isn't the concept of range of motion.
It's whose end range of motion are we talking about.
Because my full range of motion and your full range of motion are very different.
Usually, a hypermobile woman, her full range of motion in a hypermobile joint often means that a range that's already beyond what is structurally supported.
So training all the way into that end range under load repeatedly can actually reinforce the ligamentous laxity and irritate those already stressed out passive structures.
So the better way to think about this and the better framing here is to train in a controlled range, not maximum range.
Okay?
So I'll say that again because it's really important, then I'll define what controlled range is.
I want you to train in the controlled range, not your maximum range.
So controlled range is where the person can actively decelerate, come to a stop.
You can actively stabilize and produce force.
You're not just flipping into it or flopping into it, you know, via gravity or momentum.
So to quantify that for someone who's hypermobile, that might be mean, like, 80% of your available passive range.
So you're not going to a 100% of your range of motion.
You're going to, like, 80, maybe maximally 90% of your available passive range of motion.
So a practical application of that, when you are thinking about squatting, let's say, or lunges, you are going to control to a depth where the pelvis stays neutral.
The and you can pause and then reverse that that movement line smoothly.
You're not necessarily ass to the grass.
You're not necessarily rock bottom.
That's often where control breaks down, even for people who are not home hypermobile.
So maybe with overhead work, like if you are, you know, doing an overhead press, let's say, you're gonna avoid locking your elbows into hyperextension under load.
You're gonna keep, like, an active slight bend in the elbow.
For shoulder work, and this is where a lot of women get injured, you're gonna con you're gonna control that end range, like those stretch loaded positions.
So for example, like, very deep tricep dips, let's say, or extreme overhead ranges until your control is established.
So this doesn't mean that hypermobile people should avoid deep range forever or that all end range work is bad, but you have to establish controlled range of motion first.
So controlled, actively loaded, and then you can slowly move into end range training.
That can eventually be appropriate and even beneficial once control through that midrange is established.
But the sequence the sequencing for you really, really matters.
You have to establish the control first and then gradually reclaim range under load.
So, ideally, you do this with a chiropractor or a physical therapist who has some experience in hypermobility.
You can also play with it yourself, but just know that your own position sense is a little bit off.
So going to, like, 80% of what you think full range of motion, is is really important.
And I I do wanna make one more distinction.
Passive stretching, so, like, holding a static stretch to increase range is generally, like, a lower priority or even counterproductive for someone with symptomatic hypermobile joints.
Because it emphasizes the passive structures that are already too accommodating.
They're already too compliant.
Active mobility work, meaning moving into a range using muscular effort rather than gravity or an external push is generally the better way.
Are you frustrated with losing muscle and gaining fat as you get older?
Well, let me tell you, it is partially not your fault.
Your body's enzyme production naturally declines with age, making it harder to break down protein from the food that you're eating and therefore harder to build muscle.
But there's hope.
Masszymes from BiOptimizers contains a potent digestive enzyme formula, and it supercharges your protein digestion, increasing the amino acid absorption by an incredible 1200%.
没错。
Yes.
That means that you are gonna get more from your protein.
So that's more muscle building nutrition from every meal, and you're gonna experience faster recovery and less soreness and better workout results.
Sign me up, ladies.
Okay?
Mastzymes
Mastzymes isn't just for athletes.
It can help anyone struggling with age related muscle loss and weight gain by optimizing your digestion and your protein absorption.
Mastzymes
Mastzymes supports lean muscle maintenance and fat loss.

网址是 bioptimizers.com/better,记得在结账时使用 better 这个代码。
That's bioptimizers.com/better, and make sure that you use better at checkout.
So let's talk a little bit more about training.
So here is gonna be your actual checklist.
Okay?
So if you're taking notes, this is the time this is the time to take some notes.
You're gonna strength train two to four times a week.
You're gonna prioritize compound closed chain movements, generally where, like, for example, a squat or a press or a row or a hinge where the body has more contact points and more feedback.
K?
You're also gonna slow down your tempo.
So whenever you're training, you are going to utilize something called a controlled eccentric.
So eccentric is the lengthening portion of the movement.
I would love if you would queue yourself to do, a three or four second lowering.
So let's say you're doing, a bicep curl.
This is the concentric.
So if you're listening, I'm just showing my elbow flexing.
And then the eccentric is my arm strengthening strengthening out.
But my eccentric, if I'm training the eccentrics, is gonna be three to four seconds in that lowering phase.
That is going to help build that neuromuscular control that you desperately need.
K?
The other thing I'll say is it will be very wise for you to add in isometrics into your training program.
So holding at a mid range.
So couple of examples of of isometrics that I love for women.
Wall sits, that was, like, my intake form.
I always did that as an intake test for people.
Planks, that was another test that I did.
Static lunge hold.
So you're, like, literally just in the lunge all the way down and holding, or you can do and just holding those paused reps.
That builds tendon stiffness, and it builds joint stability without pushing into the end range.
Okay?
And then the other thing I'll say is prioritize your balance work.
So, like, proprioceptive or balance work.
So that can be, eyes open or closed, single leg stance, like unilateral work.
So you're like you know, the famous one that, lots of chiropractors love is Trendelenburg test.
So you're standing, you're lifting one leg, or even things like lunges, like one legged movements.
And then if you want, you can add on eyes open, eyes closed because then when you take your visual system out, you are really, really locking in hard on your joint proprioception.
And then, of course, if you wanna add in more instability, you can add unstable surface work.
So like, BOSU balls or, you know, standing on like, those trampoline parks with those, like, those foam pits.
Like, those foam pits are really, really great for for reactive, like, balance drills, if you will.
And then I would say the other the other thing I'll say is avoid passive stretching.
Okay?
If you are already moving too far, you don't need to spend any more time training it.
Okay?
You have you've got it.
Alright?
Now depending on whether this is, a systemic problem or it's a joint by joint, you're gonna program this joint by joint, not just movement by movement.
Some joints may need more targeted stability work.
So most commonly, I'll see a lot of shoulders and hips because they have the most degrees of freedom.
Even in women who are not hypermobile often need more work.
So shoulders and hips, knees to some degree, and ankles as well based on, like, where your symptoms are and where your laxity lies.
But I would say for the most part, hips and shoulders usually constitute, 70 to 80% of where the problem lies.
So those are some training considerations.
Let's talk about some nutrition as well.
So nutrition obviously is gonna support your tissue health.
It obviously doesn't replace training, but there are obviously things that you can do to help.
So adequate protein intake to support muscle protein synthesis.
You know, since your muscle is doing extra stabilization work, you know, the general active adult range is something like 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kg, grams per kilogram of body weight or around one gram per pound of body weight.
That is a reasonable starting point.
For women who are hypermobile, I would also say vitamin C is required as a cofactor for collagen synthesis.
We know that collagen synthesis requires vitamin C.
So ensuring that you're getting a lot of that through your diet, will support that baseline, you know, collagen building capacity.
I also like collagen peptide supplementation here.
The research is not a 100% established, but some research suggests that collagen peptides, when we take it alongside vitamin C and it's timed around your loading, so, like, thirty to sixty minutes before you are training, that can also support connective tissue adaptation.
This isn't as well established as protein's role in muscle protein synthesis.
And some results are like, some studies are, like, mixed, but I'll say that it's not gonna hurt.
If you take collagen I take collagen every single day.
It's not gonna hurt.
Even if you overdo it, don't expect miracles from it, but I would say this is something that you should be thinking about as well.
A general anti inflammatory eating pattern, so adequate omega threes, colorful produce, minimizing ultra processed intake.
You know?
Like, you already know that that's gonna support your general recovery capacity, especially if you are nursing chronic joint discomfort, hydration.
So kind of the basics that everybody has to deal with, like connective tissue and cartilage depend on adequate hydration.
So making sure that you're drinking sufficient water if you are doing a lot of intense activity that you're also pairing that with electrolytes.
And the one caveat I'll mention is if you have suspected HSD and you have GI involvement, which is very common, those two things actually go together very commonly, Your nutritional needs may be more individualized.
So I would say seek out a registered dietitian familiar with this kind of, like, with connective tissue disorders.
So this is not a blanket protocol.
Recovery doesn't stop when you leave the gym.
It happens in your sleep, specifically in how much time you spend in deep slow wave sleep, which is when your growth hormone releases and your tissues actively repair.
Most people optimize training and completely ignore the sleep hours where that real adaptation happens.
Now weighted blankets can be part of that because they work through something called deep pressure stimulation.
This is evenly distributed weight that activates something called mechanoreceptors that shift your nervous system out of sympathetic or fight or flight and into your parasympathetic system, which is your rest and digest, stay and play nervous system.
So this means you have lower cortisol, better sleep onset, and more time in deep sleep stages that actually matter for recovery.
Now I am using the Bearaby weighted blanket for exactly this reason.
Unlike the old school weighted blankets that feel hot or heavy or even medical, Bearaby's blankets are breathable and made with natural materials inside and out.
There's no glass beads.
There's no plastic pellets.
Just this gorgy this gorgy.
Well, I guess it is gorgy.
Just this gorgeous chunky knit design that looks beautiful on your bed and feels incredibly grounding.
So if you're looking for a more natural way to support deeper, calmer sleep, head over to bearaby.com and use code better 10 for 10% off any Bearaby weighted blanket purchase.
And lastly, I wanna talk about recovery considerations for hypermobile women.
So the first thing is hasting over pushing.
So hypermobile bodies often do better with more frequent but moderate sessions than, like, these big maximum doses at the gym.
Okay?
So we wanna reduce this, like, boom bust pattern of overdoing it because you're just gonna continue flaring up and stop like, you're gonna stop training entirely.
Sleep is your foundation for both repair and reduced pain.
It's not a bonus.
It's a requirement.
You need to sleep like you're paid to.
I also want you to track your soreness.
Like, track your symptoms, not just your soreness.
Like, normal muscle soreness is fine.
Joint swelling, instability sensations.
Like, if you feel like your joint is, like, giving way or if you feel like like sharp localized pain, these are signals to back off.
Okay?
You never want pain in the joint.
Never ever ever ever ever ever.
Okay?
So we're okay with muscle soreness.
We are not okay with joint swelling or sharp localized pain in the joint.
What I often do, this is like a little clinical pearl, like a pro tip, is I actually often will use sports tape, like bracing or taping just because when you are bracing like, when you're taping, you get a little bit more sensory feedback from the skin as your joints are moving.
It's a I would say this is a reasonable tool, especially if you have a flare or, like, you have a particularly unstable joint.
It's not a long term substitute for anything, but I do like, like, Kinesio tape, for example, or spider tape.
I will I've often used those, like, not related to those two brands at all, but just love love spider tape.
I had spider tape all over the clinic.
And then lastly, just more psychologically, want you to just manage your expectations.
Okay?
So you're gonna have good days.
You're gonna have bad days.
Connective tissue symptoms fluctuate.
They'll fluctuate with good or bad sleep, good or bad stress.
Your hormonal cycles, if you're still menstruating, it will be, you know, flare up with illness.
This is this is very, very common and doesn't mean that the training program itself has failed.
It just means that you are moving through your life with a lot of different demands, and you wanna be loving and gentle with yourself.
So the last thing I'll say, I know we've been talking a lot about strength training.
This is where, especially women in midlife who has spent years dieting and trying to get small, this is where skinny comes back to bite you in the ass.
Because if you're hypermobile, trying to get skinny and small actually will make your muscles will make your symptoms worse.
Because what you are losing when you are pursuing skinny is often also muscle.
In addition to the fat that you're trying to lose, you're also losing connective tissue as well.
So if you are severely in a caloric deficit for too long of a time, you absolutely cannot afford to sacrifice your muscle because that is the thing that is protecting you.
That is your structural that is your, you know, structural engineering.
So your hypermobility requires you, I've said this before, worth repeating, to aggressively chase muscle hypertrophy and strength.
Being hypermobile does not mean you are fragile.
It does not mean you should stretch.
Okay?
Your body needs more muscle.
You need more dynamic control and less time spent hanging out at your absolute end range because I mean, your flexibility is great.
That's not the issue.
Your guardrails are already too wide.
And you like your muscles, if you think about the guardrails on the highway and the driver is a muscle, the driver has to be sharp.
So you have to build muscle.
You have to train your control, and you have to respect the range of motion that you can actually own.
So that 80% of your what you think full range is, not the range the gravity and your ligaments can pull you into.
