Slap it up, bump it, and roll.

Ain't no better way to better yourself in this game.
You're feeling the growth.
That's real.
That's time on the mat.
We put in the word.
Believe it ain't easy, I know.
But we train for the love of the game, the love of the art.
Welcome to this episode of the BJJ campaign podcast.
My name is Jeff Boone.
I'm an a three brown belt, no stripes.
Bill Coors, a two brown belt, no stripes.
Sebastian Nattod, no gi brown belt, gi white belt.
Jack Davenport, a one blue belt, three stripes.
三段?
Third degree?
Third degree blue belt.
That's fucking dangerous.
Pumped the modem.
Sebastian's here this week.
Sebastian, thanks for coming.
He's here from Australia.
Just had two days ago, a nice twenty four hour plane ride with stops and is here training us for the week.
Jack's in from Alabama, Go offshores?
Bay Minette is pretty much the trashiest part of our county in Baldwin County.
So we call it getting stuck in the net.
I like it.
I like it.
But so Sebastian's here for the week training us.
He's going after this, you know, to a little camp called New Wave Jujutsu down in Austin, Texas where he trains what do you train about?
Six months a year down there,
Six months.
Six months a year you've been doing it how long?
Because we met two years ago.
Yes, I started down there in October 2022.
And then just been dealing with getting visas.
Now that I have a better visa, I wanna spend longer there.
But usually I've been there, I gotta leave every three months before.
So I'd leave three months in, go wherever I can, come back, deal with the border force, get back in the gym.
And now that I have a visa, it's lot easier.
所以
So
I'm thinking of staying here for longer.
How long can you stay here for?
I can say for six months, but I'm thinking of this year doing Europeans and then restarting the visa, which is in October.
October 20, go to Italy, win Euros and then come back and start my six months again.
不错。
Nice.
I'm sure there'll be an overseas comp in that time period.
Yeah, would think so.
Do that again.
I would think so.
很好。
Very good.
So we've been working on guard retention today.
It was a lot of fun.
That was, that was a interesting conceptual teaching.
Let me ask you this because both Phil and I are doing more teaching now than we used to.
And it's hard because it's hard to really kind of develop yourself as an instructor.
So what got you your teaching style?
It's very lighthearted, but very heavy on fundamentals, very heavy on concepts, which I like.
What kind of made you that way?
Well, I think the deeper you understand something, the better you're gonna be at teaching the concepts.
Like if I only knew guard attention move for move, then I'd be showing you guys move for move and no one would be getting it and it'd be a problem.
So me being confident in understanding my systematic approach to retaining like a supine guide, it's gonna help me to teach you guys how to do it properly because I'm not teaching you move for move, I'm teaching you a system and what's required.
Like I think knowing what is required if the top guy to beat you is gonna make the bottom a lot easier because now you're not in the dark.
You know, before I'd be playing guide and the guy passed my guide and it's like my fucking eyes were closed and I'm like, oh shit, got passed.
Restart again.
And that's how I lost a lot of competitions until I lost that Worlds that way and then I lost some more matches and I'm thinking like fuck, I need to actually know what's happening.
So I went and I got the knowledge on it, guard retention and now I have a system.
Now when someone passes my guard, I know what they did.
All right, they passed my guard because they controlled my head and shoulders.
They didn't let me put my inside leg in.
I couldn't high leg.
Like these are the things that worked.
So me knowing what's getting my guard passed is gonna help me teach you guys how to not get passed because I know exactly what they have to do on top to be you.
And I think that helps a lot is knowing what's going on.
Very much so.
And so is this kind of how you've approached it all the time, but how did you develop your teaching style?
In other words, like how did you get comfortable?
Cause you're obviously very comfortable teaching the system.
How did you get comfortable doing that?
Yeah, I've been teaching since I was 18 Jiu Jitsu.
So it's been a long time, twenty four now.
So that's like six years of experience.
And also just I've had a lot of good teachers around me.
John Danaher, amazing teacher.
When he talks about teaching, he said that his goal is not about how much he can get out but how much he can make you retain.
So that really stuck with me.
When I teach now, I think like this thing I can teach you next is probably the fucking cool.
But does anyone in the room really gonna fucking learn it?
Like sure I won't blow you away with how cool it is.
I noticed you're switching gears once you kind of read the room and it's like alright we'll shift and look at this other stuff.
Yeah, think that's important.
Have to be able to read your room, make sure everyone's paying attention like sometimes in Sydney I teach a class, it'd be like a night class, everyone's just come from work.
Everyone's tired, wanna have a good time.
I'm not gonna sit there teaching them their intricacies of fucking guard attention.
Everyone's gotta clock out.
So I'll show them like two Yeah, I'll show them a couple of fucking details on a guillotine and get back into rounds.
It depends on the room.
Like everyone here, we're training with you guys, Jeff.
I feel like everyone really is hungry for the knowledge, the guard attention.
So I thought like, fuck it, we'll go deep.
And then it's really worked.
Whereas other scenarios it's not gonna happen.
People are just gonna fucking see that and be like, oh, I wanna learn how to fucking kill someone on the back.
Know, it's about reading the room.
And then also you gotta be laid back I think to a degree.
Like I can't be too serious.
I mean just, we're rolling around with each other on the floor.
You know, it's not fucking rocket science.
Well you're very patient and you're with a bunch of geriatrics right now with gout and cramps and it sounds like a menopausal hell for you so you're very patient.
When I started training I was 16 in a room of like guys of your age.
And that probably helps me with coming to teaching because that's the guys who were teaching me when I was younger and the things they were doing is what would work for them.
So I get older and I'm starting training with younger, more athletic guys but I still like remember back then when I was that age, those are the guys who like helped me come up and like, you know Nice.
I've got appreciation for everyone, especially the guys who like have their own lives and are a bit older but they do jiu jitsu and they always have the better attitude as well.
A lot of younger guys have big ego.
They don't wanna learn.
Whereas the older fellas, they wanna fucking learn technique and they really have a love for jiu jitsu.
It's not about the ego.
It's not about who's got the biggest cock in the room.
It's about who's got It's not a competition.
Everyone's in there learning from each other, loving the session and I really enjoy it training with older fellas because I can put away my ego for a bit and not have to beat up everyone.
We could actually be coexisting people in a room.
Sometimes training with younger guys, it's sick but we're just trying to kill each other the whole time.
I know
what you mean.
Yeah, so it's awesome.
I really love it.
Well, no, and I think that's what You think about it and you just think about, you know, whenever, whenever I wanted you to come in because I, first off, I enjoyed my time with, with you and MD down in Texas and, and we all got along, you know, it was all a fun, lighthearted And that's the way everybody here is.
And that's what, that's what I wanted the, the environment to be, but also to be that of learning.
And like, like you said, with the concepts that we went over with Guard Retention, the three things that we did, super easy to remember, right?
Super easy to remember, but also we can do that all week for warmups.
So our warmups are gonna be us getting get better at guard retention, you know?
And even though, you know, whenever we're doing the knee prop, I'm still half retard on it.
It, you know, it'll get better from there on out.
I wanna shift gears a little bit because we, we missed the usual starter and that is we always do a Gordon Ryan update.
So Gordon Ryan update, you know the guy that he's going against Thursday this week, which will be after this is published two days from now.
And so tell us a little bit about that guy.
Oh, Josh Slowness, he's a fucking unit.
Like I was looking at the post and everyone in the comments are like, who is this guy like, this guy's random, like this random bloke.
I mean, this is probably one of the biggest people you're ever gonna see.
Like guy's got like a six foot eleven reach.
Like I've seen this guy bench four or five easy, with that long range of motion, like ex rugby player, absolute phenomenal athlete.
Like it's gonna be interesting.
I mean, everyone knows how good Gordon Ryan is.
Like, you know, we haven't seen that guy struggle in years in a match.
And Gordon is not the kind of guy who's gonna take a who's number one match if he's not in perfect condition.
The only time you'll ever see Gordon competing out of condition is probably in ACC twenty nineteen where he had stomach bug and a broken hand.
But he just like, he just ate some concrete and still just destroyed everyone in the whole comp.
Did he win that one?
对,他
Yeah, he
just killed everyone.
Like almost smitten everybody other than Booneopuluza
所以我
So I
he was just toasting everyone.
So that's him with the injury against the best in the world and he's coming into this one.
I mean, who knows what the effects of his stomach issues would have been but you know, he's not taking a match light hearted like, I mean, I know all the guys on Instagram that know who Josh Saunders is but I promise you like Gordon Ryan's seen who Josh Saunders is.
Like one of the biggest people ever.
And like, you know, I mean I'm sure you guys have experienced where you can roll against a guy who's not as good as you technically, but they're just a fucking freak.
And it's like, well fuck, what's the point of this jitsu?
I, So you know
the saying that strength doesn't matter is fucking bullshit man.
Like it's total bullshit.
Strength does matter.
I think strength is more of a technique than the actual moves are doing.
Other than that.
Like, yeah.
So it's gonna be interesting.
I mean, Gordon Ryan's very, very strong as well.
I've seen him bench press like two twenty five for like 30 reps.
So, know, we're not talking about a twerp here.
So it's gonna be interesting.
I'm very excited to see the match.
Josh, you know, he just pretty much destroys everyone in Australia.
Like I've never seen him ever get submitted and I promised Gordon I'm going in there with the intention of finishing him.
So it's gonna be cool.
It's good for me to watch because I've trained with Josh in Australia and he just cooked me.
So it's gonna be cool.
And you know, Gordon Ryan is no stranger to really big training opponents.
I mean, he trained with what's the guy?
The strong guy, the big strong guy.
Oh, Hapthor.
Hapthor's mean, Gordon Ryan's beaten Pacheco.
I mean, I think Pacheco would be bigger than Josh Saunders and he's beaten Victor Hugo.
Who's also an absolute unit.
Not to mention Nikki Ride.
What about the Atos guy?
Is he not as big as these other guys?
Andre Galval?
He's like five'nine.
Okay, so I'm gonna shut up now.
Yeah, but on all the Mexican supplements.
Yeah, they're have a trip down to Mexico.
Guarantee it's right across in Tijuana, he's getting his kit for his, yeah.
He's got five foot nine sideways as well.
That's true.
Well, how tall is Gordon?
Six two.
Six two and how tall is this guy that the beast that he's got?
He's like six three, six four.
Six four.
Maybe six three.
How much does he weigh?
Oh, he weighs two sixty five.
Holy four
was two twenty seven the other day when I saw it.
Yeah, saw that on his video on YouTube.
Josh
Josh one is one hundred and twenty kilos.
I don't know what that is in pounds.
I think
it's two sixty.
It two sixty five just like pure muscle?
Just calves?
Shredded abs, like massive legs, massive arms.
Long long limbs.
Kinda like you but not a midget.
Not part
of Smurf Village.
Y'all notice that when I go against the big guys, I say, you ready to enter Smurf Village?
We we had the Smurf Village today, like, stomping around like Goggle Mill,
所以
So
你
You
know you're
Smurfs, man.
Oh, the Smurf movie.
Oh, that's great.
好的。
Alright.
So that's the Gordon Rock.
I'm trying to think, does he compete in IDCC this year?
Josh?
Gordon.
Mojas has said he's confirmed.
I think the idea is he wants to do this match on who's number one and then see how he feels.
I mean, you can never know.
Mean, is such a like futile thing.
One day you can be feeling great and next day you're dead.
So I think that's really what he's worried about.
I mean, everyone knows that Gordon can go on ADC and just cook everyone.
Like not at a 100% but I think his goal is of course to be even 10 times better than the last ADC.
He's got really harsh standards on himself so it's gonna be interesting.
Do
you think you're gonna get an invite to the CJR?
Oh no, no definitely not me.
Mean, I I'm Australian but I mean, I was having a look.
Mean, a lot of people thought that everyone was gonna get a fucking invite to that thing.
But I think the goal with the invitations to CJI is they're trying to invite people that shakes the fucking world.
You know, at the start everyone's like, oh, who's gonna get an invite?
Oh, this random guy from tenth planet.
Oh, yeah.
How about you?
You're Australian.
It's like, no way.
Like he's trying to get guys to leave ADCC.
Like he's trying to get people who are gonna come and watch.
Remember, you don't have to pay to watch it.
它在YouTube上。
It's on YouTube.
Oh yeah.
This thing's free firstly.
And the money is donated money and any money they make is going to donations.
What's going to the charity?
I don't think the goal is So to put random guys on a show and like, oh, check it out.
We're doing on same day's ADCC.
Like his goal is to cook ADCC, which is pretty crazy.
Like I think Craig is the only guy who can do it.
I, I, and I think he's doing a good job of it.
I think one of the big pillars of that was that he, that he's not only giving back to the jujitsu community.
I mean, look, he's got big names.
Attack of brothers are going there.
That they're, they're big names in jujitsu.
He's got a lot, Nikki Rod, Nikki Ryan, lot of very big names.
I love it that he's only under an I think it's under an 80 under an over eighty kilos.
没错。
That's right.
I think it's what it is.
You know, so he's doing it right and and he's shaking the entire Jiu Jitsu community up because what ADCC is for jujitsu every other year is the Olympics of jujitsu.
And, and now shaking that up, it seems like, yeah, okay.
It's a hard push, but it's a push that was really necessary.
And like you said, I think Craig Jones is the only one that could have done that.
Mean, I think that he's got genius marketing skills.
Like I think no one could compete with that guy.
Like I'm scared of that guy.
I don't wanna get anywhere near him because like he has the ability to just put anyone on the map and then crush them.
I think with the CGI, it's a crazy investment for the future.
I know right now for sure people are getting crushed, businesses are struggling to compete with each other, AGC or whatever.
And it's just all this.
But at the end of the day, in the next couple of years, this will be history.
People it being on YouTube, it's gonna put eyes on the sport.
And it's gonna it's one of those things where if you look at it short sightedly like, oh yeah, AGC is gonna be not as cool this year or whatever.
All the guys here left, right, left, and center like don't think about it in the next fucking two months.
Think about what this does in the next five years.
People are gonna start watching.
People are gonna start coming out.
It's gonna just the sports just evolving.
I remember when I started in 2017.
Like you told someone what jiu jitsu was, they had no idea.
And then you show them a video and they're like, Get out of this bar brother.
Take your gay wrestling out
of this bar.
You don't like your con around
here boy.
Yeah, so fast forward, I remember I noticed in 2022 people started knowing what jujitsu was.
And I was like, Woah, you guys know what I'm doing now?
This is sick.
All the people who told me it was gay at the start, wanted to start training, which is interesting.
And then even now, this is such a big step.
It's gonna be really cool to see what happens next in jujitsu because it's just so big.
And two of the, I mean, two of the names that really got jujitsu on the map were Craig Jones and Gordon Ryan.
that's mean, can't argue that.
I mean, you know, people know Gordon Ryan as a celebrity, really.
I mean, whenever they see him, they see him out in public, they know who he is.
Yeah, that's true.
如果你
If you
ask someone who knows, if they know Gordon Ryan, they usually know him before they know anyone.
是的。
Yes.
Would agree with that.
I would definitely agree with that.
But that being said, it's not Michael Jordan.
不是。
No.

Like the sport is so great.
It's not even mean Conor McGregor is like 10 times of the fame and stardom as Gordon.
And I think although like maybe he's suffering a bit right now from this CJI business, this can really turn out to be the better for everyone.
Like you can turn him into Connor McGregor kind of star eventually because of how much publicity is going on.
I know Craig is really pushing the pushing the ship, steering the ship with it but like, you know, like the wind can go any direction.
Well, and you remember early on though, Gordon Ryan was the one that was really pushing pushing everything forward as far as getting athletes paid, you know, not doing these bullshit competitions that, that really didn't mean anything.
And so he really moved that forward.
And, and one of the reasons that I don't think, I mean, I haven't seen a lot on social media.
I haven't been on a lot, but correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen a lot of Gordon Ryan talking shit about Craig Jones doing CJI.
It's interesting.
I mean, he is very vocal.
That is a good point.
I mean, because I think he I I feel like deep down, Gordon Ryan, all Gordon Ryan wants is to elevate the sport, I believe.
And I think that he sees this as an elevation of the sport.
Especially with the rule set and the way that the mat is.
Oh, pit.
The pit, yeah.
I think that's the best way because how stupid is it of any competition to have a fucking platform?
Yeah, I hate competing on a platform.
It's terrible, man.
You don't know if you're going to get injured, fall off the thing or whatever.
The pit's way better and you can't get away.
It's cool.
I mean, what slide on that Mexican was it Karate Combat or something?
Oh yeah.
It's really interesting.
And like, look, at the end the day, like in Gordon and Craig, they share one thing.
It's they had to at least at some point in their life love jiu jitsu.
Like love it more than anything and really sacrifice everything in their lives to go ahead and pursue it.
So, you know
And they were doing that whenever there was no real monetary gain to be had.
Yeah, exactly.
And these guys are like yin and yang, know, the devil and the angel on your shoulder.
And they look like a devil and angel.
I mean, either one can play any character depending on who you are.
But yeah, it's definitely interesting.
Guys are not idiots.
People I think people really jump on the train and give Gordon a lot of heat for whatever he says on Instagram.
But really this is a very intelligent guy.
Like this is not an idiot.
Knows what he's really thinking deep down but I know that a lot of people see this as a big development in the sport and I'm sure that he could probably see that as well.
Honestly, he'll probably profit off this a lot more than a lot of people on the show will do.
Like sure they're getting $10 but this is gonna put a lot more eyes on the sport and when you look at this sport and the people start coming in, they say who's the fucking best and it's Gordon Ryan.
And guess who has fucking 30 instructions, BJ Fanatics.
So, you know, I think he's profiting from this as much as everyone else.
Oh, for sure.
Well, for sure.
And again, I think that's one of the reasons that he hasn't really thrown shade toward it.
Again, as I've seen, maybe I'm wrong, maybe he has, maybe there's more things but I haven't seen anything that he's been really bashing it.
I've seen him promote it like he's gonna compete, but he's not like doing what you would expect him to do.
Man, I I really think that with the CJI that having another big venue, you know what I mean?
Like, because with every other sport there's a season and then there's playoffs and you know, and then with here you just have random WNO, you know, I really I'm excited about it.
I am too.
And we'll be out there, so I'll be out there for both ADCC and CJI.
I think tickets just went on sale yesterday, which is Monday.
So we gotta get our tickets for that.
Are you gonna
be there?
I'm not sure if I can afford to get in there because I'm gonna do all the comps around Austin.
But yeah, I don't know.
We'll see what happens.
I mean, anything can happen.
好的。
Okay.
Can I ask you a question?
How do No questions.
该死。
Dammit.
Only just go and ask questions.
With qualifying for the ADC, you know, ADCC, I've been seeing the Denver Open or whatnot.
So if you win one of those, you're automatically in or do you go to another one?
Not Denver open, it's not
obviously The opens are
No, no, the
ADCC那个
ADCC The
ADCC qualifiers.
If you Well,
there's AC opens and there's AC trials.
Trials as well.
好的。
Okay.
So if you win trials, you go to ABC.
Opens are just like, I guess they're like practice.
A lot of high level guys jump in those.
So it's good experience.
Like I've submitted multiple world champions doing opens which has been great for my own confidence and just like getting exposure.
No doubt.
But when it comes to actually getting on ADCC, I mean, yeah, sure.
Guess if you win the open, people will see you but it's not the same as winning trials.
You win trials, you're gonna get on it.
I guess it's an automatic ticket.
And even guys who meddle at trials, they get invitations sometimes.
If people pull out, especially this ADCC with fucking half the guys pulling out to do Craig Jones Invitational, a lot of guys who just had great performance at trials got invited.
Oh, wow.
It was just cool.
So it just shows that like, know, if you're entertaining guy and you just go out there and fucking do your best, like, you you might just get invited anyway.
So I think that's why it's a good standpoint if people just go in there and fucking throw down.
Have you done trials?
I have done one trials in 2022 and I got armored in the quarter finals.
And then since then I was gonna do the recent trials and I tore my MCL meniscus right before it, which is really annoying.
But yeah, was watching from home.
So I'll be there next time.
Well, you've rehabbed it really well.
You're walking around on tree trunks.
Oh yeah.
Few squats between now and then.
A thousand leg sessions.
Yeah, bro.
Sick.
So that is kind of a mystery though.
Like, because ADCC is invitational only.
Obviously, you've got ways to get in with the trials.
You're what is there?
European, East Coast, West Coast?
Well, there's two European trials, two North American trials, two South American trials, and two Asian trials.
So eight?
对。
Yep.
Eight so eight guaranteed spots and then the rest invitation.
对。
Yep.
So did you do the Asian trials since and is Australia part of the Asian
trials?
So I think I had to the trials this time.
When you did it the yeah,
the first time.
第一次
The first
我
time I
was in Asia.
The trials in Sydney.
好的。
Okay.
很好。
Very good.
So Sebastian, what is your goal with jujitsu?
Like what do you want to accomplish?
I definitely wanna be world champion.
I wanna be one of the best ever like with jujitsu.
I don't wanna be just some guy.
Like I feel like I have I feel like I have the ability to be someone who's like very unique and just on a different level to a lot of people.
I mean, I think it'd be silly for me to go this far, you know, sacrifice a lot, come to America with no money just to fucking be an average dude.
I I wanna be literally one of the best ever to do jiu jitsu.
And I think at the age of 24, like, I've got maybe six years left to really push the pace before I gotta hang it up.
So that's the goal, man.
Just become one of the fucking best ever.
我
I
don't know, man.
So like, one of my friends was talking about how, with the development of supplements and medical science that you may have more than six years because like, you know, he was telling me, he was like, man, 40 now is actually the old 30.
And I thought about it and I was like, you know what, you're absolutely correct.
So, you know, you probably have more than six years man.
Maybe six years in Australia.
I think here, what supplements you have in America, maybe I've got about fucking 20.
That's right, you can only get two milligrams of melatonin there.
Yeah, you're not wrong.
One thousand IUs of vitamin D goes on.
Yeah, I ran out of my Walgreen, the vitamin D Australia and I was like, no, it's finished.
Because I don't have any vitamin D my buddy.
Yeah, so interesting.
Now you just gotta get out in the sun.
Talk a little bit about your training partners, what you depend on them for.
Like, you know, I think that's important.
You kind of set it up before.
I think, well, Phil and I have been training since we started together and, you know, it's always been a lot of fun and we always we always are very playful whenever we're training with each other.
And it's like that for the most part where we train, period.
That's the way it is.
But it's gotta be tough whenever you start.
There's again, you had a lot of older folks in there.
So I'm sure whenever you started, it was the same as when anybody started.
When I started, when I, you know, had two minutes of fury, you know, whenever I started and I was, you know, just really rough.
It didn't take long, but I was really rough to begin with.
Tell us a little bit of how you came along with that.
Oh, Well, I was a 16 year old who was not very strong.
So just got bashed every session.
I remember just getting absolutely obliterated, like bruised all over.
Like mom thought I was getting domestic abused.
I was like, trust me, me it's a cross collar joke.
It's fine.
Yeah, I remember that.
And then over time learning to like, obviously learn the technique and then making it playful.
You're right when you start training, like you have no idea what you're doing.
You can't play when you start.
Because you think you're getting murdered.
没错。
Exactly.
It's just like you're trying to win.
Of course trying to win, you've never done it before but I think the better you get, the more playful you can get, give or take.
Give your opponent something, help you defend something.
Have a good training partner that you trust.
I mean, I don't wanna give someone visiting the gym a fully extended arm bar because God knows what they're gonna do with it.
But with good training partners, I can practice defending from there with the risky positions.
Someone catches my heel, I can practice slipping my heel and
No, they're not gonna send it.
Know that at least if they try and break it, they're gonna break it slowly.
Cause I've seen some crazy people come in the gym and these people I'm not giving an inch.
So it depends.
Everyone you train with is gonna be different.
I don't think two people are the same.
So which makes it cool.
All these different styles, different body types, different personalities.
It makes for a really cool sport because it's so intricate.
I think it's really important though that you kind of pointed out that that positional, if you don't train those positions that are fully locked in, of course you're gonna die 90% of the time.
But at least you have that exposure to, to that position where and I did this the other day, was training with Landon and then I was asking him what he wanted to do.
And he said, I really wanna work that crucifix position.
So I said, all right, cool.
I'll just stay in the crucifix position.
I won't try to get out, won't, you know, do anything.
So I'll just let you work in that.
And then whenever I was there, I found myself looking at things that I never looked at because it wasn't an option for me to get out.
I was just staying there.
And so, you know, I found out right on his leg wrap, he was doing a good job of switching feet under and over.
Well, I found out whenever I stressed and came here to make him go back, I could do like a hitchhiker to get it and spread his legs.
So you learn way more about a position the longer you spend in it, you know, and not try, not try to get not try to not be in that position.
Does that make sense?
I mean, John's very big on positional rounds.
I mean, I remember when you would remember that Enzo has like so many mount rounds, so many this and that.
And even John said it once after Nicolas Marigalli mounted Kai and Duarte and just submit him really easily, He was saying to us like, well, Nicholas spends twelve minutes a day every single day in mount.
Like how much time does Kanan Duarte spend on bottom mount?
Probably not as much as Nicholas on top.
所以这
So it
makes a big difference.
And even with myself, like I feel like I truly believe that there's no one my weight in the world who can mount me because of my mount escape, because of how many times I've done position arounds on the bottom mount position.
Like I've done that many times that I really believe there's no one on the earth my way who can hold me there.
And I think that's not even having a big ego.
I think that's from just a confirmation of how many times I've been mounted in that position by someone my size, world champion or not.
And it's just impossible to pin me.
And like, it gives you confidence and that you're only going get that confidence if you've done it that many times.
And it's easy for you if you're as good as you are to not be there.
Well, yeah, definitely.
I mean, it does come with its own problems.
Now that I'm good at not getting mouthed, people are not gonna mount me and they're gonna put me in other positions, I have to deal Right.
Now I have to know how to defend that.
And then even now to this point now where I'm really big on guard retention because I've had enough of being pinned and all the matches I lose are usually off guard pass.
Because before I was so confident in my pin escapes that my guard suffered.
Because I was like, well I'm just gonna come at you harder than my guard because if you pass me I'm just gonna fucking escape and just go again.
But that would just be like me getting scored on and then the guy running or the guy passing me again.
And then I lose by points.
Whereas now like my goal is not to get passed, which makes my attacks better.
That makes total sense.
对。
Yes.
Jack, what about you?
What's your goals with jujitsu?
Man, like this week Not
be shit.
Like this week of yeah, true that.
But this week of training with Sebastian, my only goal is to come away with a good Australian accent.
But it's really suffering, mate.
So, oi, here, here, here.
But that's all I can do is here and oi.
So hopefully by the end of the week I can do more than two words in an Australian accent.
But no, seriously, my jujitsu goals is to I don't know, it's just so good for your body and your mind and stress relief that I just wanna stay healthy and do my best and progress the way I progress and that's it.
But I just want to be in it for the long haul and be able to enjoy the benefits injury free and basically just, you know, because I work really hard and I'm not really worried about belts and whatnot.
I'm just, I just wanna have good roles, good solid roles and to be able to feel good about the work I put in.
And now you're before you were mostly gi, now you're all no gi with the tenth planet down there.
And it's a different different universe like
Well, a lot of it is, you know, along the same lines as what he's showing.
And, like, at first, when I went there, I was just like, God, do I even know jujitsu?
Like, I mean, it was it was really embarrassing because I had no clue of any of the legs and going around and, know, any of this stuff.
And it took that was a very humbling experience because, you know, I've been doing jujitsu for like, what, six years and then you come in and you're just like day one all over again.
And it's a tough battle to, you know, keep going and continuing to progress.
So, yeah, but the Nogi, I love the Nogi.
It's, it's fun.
Yeah, totally agree.
Are you gonna be doing any competitions anywhere in the future?
No, because I'm such an obsessive, like, so obsessive.
Like, I get so nervous and I have a stressful life to begin with.
And I just I have a sick wife for anybody that I know.
And so I don't want to Shout out to Mallory.
Love you, babe.
But it's I just don't need that anxiety and I don't need to, you know, put her through the anxiety.
But she actually loves going.
So she went to the Pans with me.
So yeah, tell us about that first experience, Jack.
Oh, that was that was the world.
So I competed at Hold on.
等等。
Hold on.
Just to set this up for everyone.
Jack decided to do a competition.
So he said, you know what the hell?
Let's just do something not local.
Let's do the world championships of jiu jitsu for our first competition.
Go ahead, Chad.
So and it was no gi.
And I only trained gi.
So I was going with the owner of my gym who was accomplished black belt.
And we were riding over there.
He's this Asian guy and he was really scaring me while he was driving.
And I mean, I'm not kidding.
I drove most of the way because it was a fucking nightmare.
Like, was just like, I was nervous.
I was more nervous on the ride over there than I was.
I wasn't even thinking about judiciary.
I was just thinking about surviving on the interstate.
And so anyways, he's talking to me and he's looking at me while he's driving for like thirty seconds.
He doesn't even check the lane.
He just thirty second stares into the passenger seat and he's like, so how many how many competitions have you done?
Was like, well, zero.
And he about spit his coffee out.
He's like, oh my god.
And so, anyway, so the day before he's competing and it's and we were at the warm up mats and I was I was helping him warm up and I was looking around at how all how good all the I didn't even know how to warm up how these people warm up.
I didn't even know the submissions they were doing.
I was just like, oh my God, I've made a huge mistake.
This is gonna be the worst moment of my life.
And I've had some pretty embarrassing moments.
So to say that is a testament Yeah.
To how
I've been there for some of them.
You have.
And we've only been together maybe like four weeks of our life, you know, combined.
And so you've seen some pretty stupid shit.
And so I was just petrified.
And so I wasn't saying anything.
And then Niall went and he won his match.
And then we're eating and he noticed I wasn't saying anything.
And I always talk.
He's like, he's like, what's wrong with you?
And I was like, I was like, man, I was like, I've made a huge mistake.
I'm gonna get fucking murdered out there.
Those I didn't even know I don't even know what those guys were doing in the warm ups.
And he was he spit his food out and he was like, those were world class black belt check.
And I was like, oh my god.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
But so I went out the next day.
I was still really nervous, but I went out the next day and I lost by four points.
I got taken down two times by a wrestler.
But Overall positive though.
Then What'd you say?
Oh, definitely.
And then and the adrenaline rush you get, like You get high.
It was just one match.
Just one match?
I feel like I remember you winning one losing one.
Was that something else?
是的。
Yes.
That was the Orlando Open.
I'll be JJF, just Orlando Open, whatnot.
And then I did the Pans and it was one match again.
And I won that, but Mallory came to that and she liked the atmosphere.
You know, the atmosphere, it's a cool it's a culture, you know.
I mean, it's Jiu Jitsu is its own, like, subculture and she really enjoyed watching watching everything and she's gotten really interested in the jujitsu even though and she's kinda sad that she can't do it because she has a port.
So she can't do any type of like And especially
anything that would give her infection or anything like that, it'd be horrible.
And so but no, she she really really enjoys watching all that and whatnot.
It's it's been it's been positive for our marriage.
That's good.
That's great.
It should be.
It should be.
It's it's been positive for all aspects of my life.
So Yeah.
I hope it is for everyone.
Phil, you got anything else before closing?
I think we're good.
Let's go training.
好的。
Alright.
That's what we're gonna do.
Sebastian, thanks for being here.
Jack, thanks for being here.
Thanks for coming up.
Thanks, Jeff.
Really appreciate it.
And if you're not out there doing something each and every day to make yourself better, get out there and do it.
Phil and I choose Jiu Jitsu.
We hope you do too.
I'm about to feed them to the sharks right now.
Get them hyped right now.
You know the ground is on.
Everybody that trains, you know the game.
So let's get it.
Slap it up, bump it, and roll.
That's the way that it go.
Ain't no better way to better yourself in this game.
You're feeling the growth.
Time on the mat.
We put in the work.
Believe it ain't easy.
I know.
But we trade for the love of the game, the love of the art.
Now slap it up, bump it.
Let's roll.
