Monica DiCenso joins us now.

Speaker 5

I had a global investment strategy, JPMorgan Private Bank.

Speaker 5

What are fancy people doing with their cash?

Speaker 6

I don't know about fancy people, but I can tell you what my clients are doing with their cash.

Speaker 6

Balances are actually still pretty high.

Speaker 6

If you look like across our entire platform, something around 20% of assets is actually still sitting in cash.

Speaker 6

Some of my larger clients that it's even greater than that.

Speaker 6

And I think that just reflects the desire for many people to add to risk assets and some kind of pullback.

Speaker 6

We just haven't had a prolonged pullback.

Speaker 6

We've had volatility, but it hasn't been very long lasting.

Speaker 6

So I expect as we move through the summer, maybe if we get a few more bumps, you'll see some of that move into the market.

Speaker 6

And then I think as we move towards the back half of the year, I think people are just hoping that we get through all this turmoil in The Middle East and some of these headlines.

Speaker 6

The problem is, you know, when it feels good, that's generally not the best time to invest.

Speaker 6

So you probably should be sticking a toe

Speaker 2

in now.

Speaker 2

How how concerned are your clients about inflation?

Speaker 2

I know it's you know, this inflation that we're seeing out there, it impacts the lower end of the k shaped economy, perhaps a little bit more than the higher end.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

But I'm guessing you're getting some phone calls.

Speaker 6

It is by far the biggest risk that people think about.

Speaker 6

I I think when you think about the client base I work with, many of them remember the seventies.

Speaker 6

And they say, okay.

Speaker 6

You look at this market, it just keeps grinding higher, grinding higher, and yet you have higher rates, higher inflation that feels like it's gonna be more more persistent.

Speaker 6

And so that they're very concerned that this could somehow be the seventies all over again.

Speaker 6

We're gonna get caught, you know, off kilter.

Speaker 6

That said, when I look at portfolios, I don't see portfolios that are built for a higher inflationary environment.

Speaker 6

And so when you look at this market up high single digits year to date, that's where we're having most of our conversations.

Speaker 6

Think about rebalancing.

Speaker 6

Think about adding more to your portfolio that's gonna carry better in an inflationary environment.

Speaker 6

So you gotta look at real assets, infrastructure, even hedge funds again, which many of my clients have not used as a tool in a very long time.

Speaker 6

I know.

Speaker 6

Just saying it, I kinda chuckle like you because Yep.

Speaker 6

They were out of favor for a long time.

Speaker 6

And I think now people are starting to appreciate what uncorrelated strategies could do in an inflationary environment.

Speaker 2

Even in a fixed income market, where you could sit in a two year treasury and get north of 4% now.

Speaker 2

I mean, that's gotta be attractive for a lot

Speaker 6

of people.

Speaker 6

It is, especially in a world where we look at twelve months, we're looking for five, six, 7% returns in equities.

Speaker 6

So if you can get close to that with fixed income with much less volatility, that feels attractive.

Speaker 6

And so I I think the big question that you mentioned at the beginning, the cash, you know, with inflation where it is, cash is not where you should be.

Speaker 6

So you should do need to dip a toe in and into risk assets in some form, even if it's just, you know, going out a little bit on the risk

Speaker 5

side of box.

Speaker 5

What do you do with duration?

Speaker 5

First of all, let's get this stereotype out of the way.

Speaker 5

Fancy people, as I call them.

Speaker 5

Are they sixty forty?

Speaker 5

Are they loaded the boat on Apple and Nvidia?

Speaker 5

Are they 85% bonds?

Speaker 5

What's the actual makeup of those portfolios?

Speaker 6

When you start to go to, like, the higher end of the wealth spectrum, you do see more assets in longer duration investments.

Speaker 6

That could be alternatives, other areas like that because they don't need the liquidity.

Speaker 6

Right?

Speaker 6

And so they they can take a little more risk.

Speaker 6

So that's gonna be different from, a standard, you know, mom and pop investor.

Speaker 6

And so that's where I see more investments going.

Speaker 6

They're they're playing for the long term.

Speaker 6

They wanna ride this out.

Speaker 6

They don't wanna worry

Speaker 5

much more.

Speaker 2

所以你

So you

Speaker 5

got a family of 45 people deciding which f one Grand Prix to go to next.

Speaker 5

不错。

Great.

Speaker 5

And there's one person who's responsible is they look at the monthly statement.

Speaker 5

If we see yield up, price down Yeah.

Speaker 5

How many months out do they have to see price down before they get upset?

Speaker 6

You know, it's funny.

Speaker 6

I that's in a way why alternatives can be a better asset class.

Speaker 6

Some of these marked, you know, not on a as regular basis, so it helps people hang in there.

Speaker 6

You know, clients do panic.

Speaker 6

That's why I have a job, right, to try to keep them steady.

Speaker 6

And where we spend a lot of time besides talk about inflation is what is your plan?

Speaker 6

What is your goal?

Speaker 6

What is this money for?

Speaker 6

And if it's for five, ten, fifteen years from now, your kids, your grandkids, you should not panic on a monthly statement.

Speaker 6

I try to caution people to not let that cause these reactions.

Speaker 6

And even I mentioned market up, you know, 9% year to date.

Speaker 6

People look at that and they say, oh, I can't add here.

Speaker 6

I shouldn't add at highs.

Speaker 6

All the data we looks at we look at over time, maybe not in a two or three month period, but four or five months or longer, adding at an all time high, almost no different than adding on a dip.

Speaker 6

And so I I try to caution people on the behavioral side to not let your emotions dictate how you invest and rather stick to the plan that that we've articulated.

Speaker 6

Easier said than

Speaker 2

done, though.

Speaker 2

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 2

How about gold?

Speaker 2

Gold wait.

Speaker 2

We hit a you know, hit 5,000.

Speaker 2

We've now pulled back to 4,500, but still, I know gold is in the conversation often with your clients.

Speaker 6

Absolutely.

Speaker 6

I you know, most of my clients, in spite of the rally, what, over a 100% over the last few years.

Speaker 6

So gold's had an amazing rally.

Speaker 6

And yet on this recent volatility, I think people assumed the Middle East crisis would cause a rally, and that's not what happened.

Speaker 6

And there's a lot of reasons for that.

Speaker 6

But you look at where gold is now, and you say, okay.

Speaker 6

I still most of my clients still wanna diversify a bit outside of their dollar exposure.

Speaker 6

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 6

So gold helps there.

Speaker 6

And then you look at central bank buying, which we think is still gonna be a tailwind over the next six to eighteen months.

Speaker 6

And so that we add those two together, still feels like there's a place for gold in portfolios.

Speaker 6

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 6

The question is how you add it.

Speaker 6

So actually have some volatility.

Speaker 6

So you can sell puts.

Speaker 6

You can do strategies like that to leg in at a lower level, which has been how some of larger families have been doing it.

David Doyle right now, with us on economics and The Americas at Macquarie as well.

Speaker 5

David, I don't feel like I've had a traditional economics discussion like Paul, when the red sox had pen and hopes.

Speaker 5

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 5

David, if you're writing an eight page memo today, do you have any understanding of where the American economy is, say, September, November this year?

Speaker 8

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 8

Well, look, Tom, we we are actually fairly optimistic in terms of where things are heading.

Speaker 8

We think that the consumer is proving resilient, and credit growth remains strong.

Speaker 8

The AI CapEx cycle continues to run strong.

Speaker 8

So we suspect that you're in a good place.

Speaker 8

And I think that that'll remain the case when you get to the fall.

Speaker 8

And you'll be talking about how strong the economy is and the need for rate hikes down the line from the Fed.

Speaker 2

David, how concerned are you about the inflation in this economy?

Speaker 2

Is it a short term war driven energy inflation, or is it something more?

Speaker 8

I think there's something more.

Speaker 8

I think that you you know, certainly the the oil spike is is probably passing through, and you're likely to see that come through in core inflation in in coming in coming months.

Speaker 8

But I think on top of that, you have a tech boom.

Speaker 8

And I think this is one of the undertold stories of 2025 and even 2026 now is how much tech is is driving an inflation impulse.

Speaker 8

If you look at at things like computer software and accessories in the consumer price index, that has historically been about minus 5% year on year.

Speaker 8

In the latest release for for April, that was up 14% year over year.

Speaker 8

So you've seen a real inflection in that.

Speaker 8

PPI semiconductor, similar story.

Speaker 8

That's up, I think, 25, 26% year on year.

Speaker 5

With the inflation we have of a central tendency, 3.8%.

Speaker 5

I noticed Canada coming out today with a much lower inflation regime.

Speaker 5

Are is Macquarie modeling out a potential 4% statistic, or is it or do you just see it migrating not to 2%?

Speaker 5

Forget about that silliness, but just nudging down, if you will.

Speaker 8

Do I think in in The US, of course, you have a much tighter labor market, and then what's the case in Canada?

Speaker 8

Canada built up some some labor slack.

Speaker 8

So I think that helps to explain why you're seeing some divergence in the inflation data out over over the last couple of months in those two economies.

Speaker 8

But I I'd say that 4% on a headline number is is probably likely to occur later this year in The US.

Speaker 8

So it's something that we think will be sustained.

Speaker 8

But certainly with the oil price increase, that's 4% is is is obtainable.

Speaker 8

Think probably longer term, you're looking at inflation settling in around two and a half to 3% Right.

Speaker 8

We've had.

Speaker 8

I mean, inflation's been above target for over five years now.

Speaker 5

Return to return to surveillance experts here with David Doyle, Alexis Christopherson, Paul Sweeney.

Speaker 5

Guys, if we get four or 4.1 inflation, mentally, we're not ready for that.

Speaker 5

I would suggest.

Speaker 2

I don't.

Speaker 2

And we've this is a US consumer, like a lot of consumers around the world have been beat over the head with inflation for a long time now.

Speaker 9

And it'll be the first time a whole generation has seen inflation be that high.

Speaker 9

So they don't David know what

Speaker 5

to do with David, that's a really important point From Alexis, I mean, this is a whole new new for a lot of people, isn't it?

Speaker 8

Well, I I think, yeah, the lived experience for for a lot of people that entered their working lives or their adulthood in, you know, around 2020 has been, you know, elevated inflation.

Speaker 8

And so I think that the the luxury that we had in 2022 and in 2023 when you had that first wave of of inflation post the COVID reopening was that you had had low inflation for, you know, thirty or forty years.

Speaker 8

So people weren't didn't have their backup as much about it.

Speaker 8

And I think that, you know, if we have a a second inflation wave here and it looks like one may be underway, you know, people will be much more sensitive.

Speaker 8

I think that's a that's a astute point.

Speaker 2

David, given that backdrop, what's your view of The US consumer these days?

Speaker 8

Well, look, the the consumer, I think, has proven more resilient than a lot of people had anticipated at the outset of this oil price spike.

Speaker 8

Same store sales growth, I was looking at it the other day, is up close to 10% year over year.

Speaker 8

We've had solid retail sales growth through through April.

Speaker 8

So it looks like the spending has continued, which I think to some has been a bit of a a puzzle given the higher gasoline prices.

Speaker 8

Some had anticipated would would be more of a drag.

Speaker 8

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 8

Tax re elevated tax refund checks, I think, are part of the story.

Speaker 8

And then I think another undertold part of the story is credit growth.

Speaker 8

Right?

Speaker 8

Credit loosening is is taking place, and consumers are making up for Right.

Speaker 8

The higher gasoline prices through through taking out credit.

Speaker 5

So one final question.

Speaker 5

My summary of all this, David Doyle, is I gotta start modeling out a Fed rate increase.

Speaker 8

I think that's right.

Speaker 8

Look.

Speaker 8

We've been calling for a Fed rate the next move for for an increase since the start of the year.

Speaker 8

You know, right now, we're in early twenty twenty seven, but it's possible if the data continue to evolve in in the way that it has been that have to start moving in in 2026.

Speaker 8

So I I do think that we'll be talking about that more in the months to come.

Speaker 5

David Doyle, thank you so much.

Speaker 5

Macquarie, morning.

Speaker 5

That was a great summary Yep.

Speaker 5

For Global Wall Street now, this is a treat.

Speaker 5

This public service to America at the White House for president Trump, Joseph LaVorgna, joins us.

Speaker 5

But what you don't know and probably president Trump didn't know, he was at Deutsche Bank years ago in a combine that melded economics into fixed income.

Speaker 5

We're thrilled he could be with us today with from Vassar and some work at New York University as well.

Speaker 5

Okay.

Speaker 5

I I gotta get this out of the way right now.

Speaker 5

I saw Goldman Sachs treatment, and they look at four point six zero ten years of pivot point.

Speaker 5

Okay.

Speaker 5

We're there, and we're there quickly.

Speaker 5

Do you have in your head a ten year yield where the system unravels?

Speaker 3

没有。

No.

Speaker 3

But I do think rates are going higher, Tom, for a whole host of factors, higher inflation risk premium, the need at some point for treasury to raise more supply, and the fact that the market is really only priced about one tightening, and I could see potentially a series of tightening so yields go higher.

Speaker 5

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 5

Paul's got eight questions.

Speaker 5

I'm gonna get this one in quickly here.

Speaker 5

If yields go higher, price down, it can be ambiguous, good or bad, or zag and posing, say you're gonna see a higher wage, a higher real wage.

Speaker 5

Do you buy that optimism, or is it gonna be stress?

Speaker 3

It's possible.

Speaker 3

I mean, the AI, the productivity story could translate into much higher wages, the corporate share of income is high.

Speaker 3

So hopefully, at some point, that does slow to workers.

Speaker 3

I was very bullish on the economy and was talking in my prior role of a disinflationary boom, which seemed very reasonable until the Middle East war started because I think that completely changed the dynamic.

Speaker 3

So yes, I'm bullish on, I was bullish on growth in terms of being low and non inflationary and rates coming down and the Fed easing, all that's kind of thrown by the wayside.

Speaker 3

In terms of what level of yields crack the system, we don't really know.

Speaker 3

It's really a liquidity and confidence story, could be four seventy five on 10s, it could be 5% on 10s, and there's so many other dynamics at play and as you're well aware, the narrowness of market, the equity market has been a handful of companies.

Speaker 3

And at some point, know, that exuberance may itself be stretched.

Speaker 3

So if the Fed's tightening, financial conditions suddenly tighten, risk appetite changes and it could unravel quickly.

Speaker 2

Joe, in your notes, you say inflation is a problem.

Speaker 2

I think most of our viewers and listeners would agree with you.

Speaker 2

How long is it gonna be a problem, you think?

Speaker 3

That's a great question.

Speaker 3

I mean, when's the war gonna end and how quickly can these bottlenecks stop?

Speaker 3

I mean, the way to think of this is it's a mini COVID.

Speaker 3

And I think that's what most investors don't understand, which makes me think yields go higher.

Speaker 3

When I say mini COVID, there's major supply chain disruptions.

Speaker 3

It's not just energy, it's nitrogen, which relates to fertilizer, different material that go into plastics, other sensitive commodities.

Speaker 3

And what we learned during COVID is you just can't turn wells off, you just can't shut this on a much, much smaller scale, but you can't just turn the system off.

Speaker 3

And like a light switch, it automatically goes back.

Speaker 3

And the market is, I don't think the bond market isn't fully appreciative of that.

Speaker 5

Joe LaVorgna, SMBC Nikko Securities, surely could be with us today, and we continue here, I guess, the arch idea, and you live this at the White House.

Speaker 5

This is a president who likes joint stimuli all the time.

Speaker 5

We've got a nominal GDP popping 5% plus persistently there.

Speaker 5

We've got, you know, inflation well above the Fed target and all that.

Speaker 5

Are we just living in a new stimulus driven milieu and it goes until it goes?

Speaker 3

We might, Tom.

Speaker 3

But if that's the case, then, you know, inflation expectations need to be reset.

Speaker 3

They need a higher term structure rates to reflect the environment you just described.

Speaker 3

So it's either one or the other.

Speaker 3

Either the economy is going to produce non inflationary growth, and eventually the Fed can get rates to neutral or

Speaker 5

Right, that worked out.

Speaker 3

We're in a regime where you've got rising debt to GDP, higher inflation relative to where the Fed's target is.

Speaker 3

And that would be in the Fed's not cutting, and that's a higher rate regime.

Speaker 5

Do you perceive that model is a 100 basis point shift?

Speaker 5

Sorry, folks, jargon.

Speaker 5

A one percentage point shift up in the curve, or could it be more sixties like can be a real shift into pre Volker?

Speaker 3

Well, in the sixties is very, as you know, Tom, it's very gradual as cyclical.

Speaker 3

The the floor on inflation with saw higher cyclical floors as you move through the sixties into the seventies.

Speaker 3

Best guess, it's the latter that it would be like maybe, let's say a 100 basis points repricing.

Speaker 3

It's a nice round number.

Speaker 3

But, you know, could it be something longer?

Speaker 3

It's possible.

Speaker 3

I mean, in the last couple of years, inflation is running about 75 basis point above the Fed's target.

Speaker 3

We're gonna go higher than that in the next few months.

Speaker 3

When could it end?

Speaker 3

Maybe by the fall?

Speaker 3

We'll see.

Speaker 3

I mean, dis I guess the question is how disinflationary is AI in the short term?

Speaker 3

May actually be contributing to the problems we have to the data center build out and energy usage.

Speaker 3

Longer term is probably disinflationary.

Speaker 2

We've got a new Fed chairman.

Speaker 2

Presumably, he feels a little pressure to get rates down.

Speaker 2

But, boy, the data

Speaker 5

doesn't Great seem question, Paul.

Speaker 5

I'm gonna make some news here.

Speaker 5

Are you interviewing for a position at the Fed?

Speaker 3

不是。

No.

Speaker 3

I'm not interviewing for the position at the Fed.

Speaker 3

不是。

No.

Speaker 3

By the way, the and I've I've gotten to know them.

Speaker 3

Think they're a bunch of Fed people.

Speaker 3

That was one cool thing about the job.

Speaker 3

There's a lot of super talented people there.

Speaker 3

Kevin Walsh will do a great job.

Speaker 3

I'm very confident of that.

Speaker 3

However, I don't see how Kevin's gonna make a plausible case for rate cuts.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

It's just it's just not there.

Speaker 3

And if the market continues to price tightening, maybe he just pushes back against the committee that's certainly becoming at least on from the president's more hawkish.

Speaker 3

Maybe he pushes back a bit, gets it more center, and then kinda hope for the best.

Speaker 3

Things may be, unfold in a positive way in the back half of the year.

Speaker 3

But right now, look at, like, the prices paid series in the ISMs, the New York Fed's got this global pressure supply index.

Speaker 3

Not sure exactly how they put it together, but the picture certainly shows the supply chain disruptions.

Speaker 3

That's all pro inflation in the system.

Speaker 2

So, again, is this a inflation?

Speaker 2

I don't know.

Speaker 2

It just feels stickier to me than just

Speaker 3

the price Well, of you could see it if you look at like the San Francisco Fed, they've got the A cyclical and cyclical price trends, you look at this land of fit sticky price index.

Speaker 3

Yeah, you're seeing it absolutely sticky.

Speaker 3

And by the way, it's been above trend.

Speaker 3

So we've been well above two in a lot of these components, the super core that the former chair Jay Powell likes looking at, it's been running about three and a half percent, definitely sticky.

Speaker 3

所以

So

Speaker 2

I mean, there's nothing the Fed can do.

Speaker 5

Right?

Speaker 2

I mean

Speaker 3

There's nothing the Fed can do other than at some point potentially raise rates to try to slow demand.

Speaker 3

And the problem with raising rates to slow demand to bring inflation back to target, which right now it's probably going to be at least a point, if not a point and a half above target is is generally a recession.

Speaker 3

The question is does the Fed want to do that?

Speaker 3

If the Fed doesn't want to do that, they implicitly change their target, you're going to be in a world then where rates are higher, you're gonna have a steeper curve and higher yields.

Speaker 5

Real treat for you across this nation and worldwide.

Right now, Michelle Meyer darkens the door.

Speaker 5

She's chief economist, head of economics at Mastercard.

Speaker 5

And all I can say is she owns consumer analysis.

Speaker 5

Let's get this out of the way.

Speaker 5

The state of the American consumer, I know it's k shaped.

Speaker 5

Don't give me that.

Speaker 5

How fragile is it?

Speaker 13

So I would use a different word.

Speaker 13

I would use the word nimble for consumers.

Speaker 13

Consumers have been hit with a number of shocks over the last few years, and they have managed to navigate those shocks remarkably well.

Speaker 13

And I think it's because the shocks have not been uniform in terms of the basket of spend.

Speaker 13

So they've had some flexibility in terms of how to figure out where the prices are rising, where they're seeing more discounts.

Speaker 13

And they're gravitating to where they find the most amount of value.

Speaker 13

It's pretty remarkable to see.

Speaker 5

I love your marketing at Mastercard.

Speaker 5

She used to write normal reports for Bank of America.

Speaker 5

Now she's at Mastercard, AI enabled traveler.

Speaker 13

Mean, it's fun.

Speaker 13

How it's fun now.

Speaker 13

I still love talking about the Federal Reserve, but it's fabulous to also talk about these broader themes in the economy and what we can see in our own incredible data set.

Speaker 5

Huge Mastercard report on travel.

Speaker 13

We did.

Speaker 13

So it's called the travel equation.

Speaker 13

It's around three forces that are driving travel in this economy, macro, particularly geopolitics, machines, which would be AI and then motivations, which is where you want to go the personal motivations that drive travel.

Speaker 13

And one of the things that was really remarkable that we were able to clean from our data is to be able to understand how consumers that are utilizing AI, so we separate into two cohorts, the consumers that have AI subscriptions, and a matching set of cohort of consumers that don't.

Speaker 13

And you can see how they're traveling differently.

Speaker 13

First of all, those that are using AI subscriptions spend more of their budget towards travel.

Speaker 13

And then they go to places that are off the beaten path like things you would never have known or cities that you would not necessarily aware of.

Speaker 13

You're seeing a very high share of tourist spending in those cities from that AI subscriber bucket.

Speaker 13

So it's fascinating to see how consumers are embracing AI to find new places to travel that have more value, especially in a world with high inflation.

Speaker 5

Funny you say Ireland.

Speaker 13

We actually found with forward looking bookings that from the North America, most light highest increase in bookings for the summer is is Dublin.

Of course.

Speaker 13

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 13

And that's critical.

Speaker 13

When you think about the overwhelming force that's out there in terms of travel, it is very much geopolitics and it's the cost of travel.

Speaker 13

And that's what consumers have to manage in terms of where do they go from a safety perspective?

Speaker 13

Where do they go from a cost perspective?

Speaker 13

How do they think about the availability of flights?

Speaker 13

All of those are critical parts of the equation in North America and The US, but even more so, of course, if you're staying in The Middle East or throughout Asia.

Speaker 2

Are Canadians not coming down to Florida or going to Arizona when it gets cold?

Speaker 2

Is that still an issue?

Speaker 13

I think that, you know, you're seeing Canadians flock to warmer weather, whether that's Florida, Arizona or Mexico.

Speaker 13

But no, you're still seeing a lot of a lot of movement.

Speaker 2

Alright, so we've got I'm going to go back to your old well here.

Speaker 2

Yeah, we got a new Federal Reserve Chairman here.

Speaker 2

What is he going to do with his Federal Reserve?

Speaker 2

Presumably he's got a little bit of pressure from the administration to bring rates down, but the data just isn't there, is it?

Speaker 13

So we'll see.

Speaker 13

I mean, I think that's the reality is that we are in wait and see mode and that's probably the right place to be because we have to determine how the increase in energy prices will feed through the economy.

Speaker 13

So there's both growth dynamics and inflation dynamics.

Speaker 13

So I think for the Fed to sit and monitor the data and try to understand the transmission of the shock into the economy is absolutely the right approach.

Speaker 13

And the committee has made that very clear.

Speaker 13

They've been very vocal in terms of where they see those risks.

Speaker 13

We had multiple dissents in the last meeting.

Speaker 13

Very active commentary coming out of Federal Reserve talking about those that are leaning more towards potentially a hike being the next move, those still in the cut camp.

Speaker 13

But most that are just saying we have to see how things play out.

Speaker 5

I I don't know the chart in front of me, but I saw a chart yesterday from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco that showed the flow of people in a way losing their job, moving in transition from employment to unemployment.

Speaker 5

And for the younger cohort, it was shocking, the decline in jobs, the the flow out of employment into unemployment.

Speaker 5

What is Mastercard seeing on the stresses on the labor front?

Speaker 13

I mean, for us, of course, just looking at the public labor market statistics just like you are in terms of the BLS data, the flow data, the jolt status, jobless claims.

Speaker 13

So specifically to the stat that you referenced in terms of the flow of labor in and out of unemployed cohorts.

Speaker 13

Earlier in the year and really actually last year we did see the younger cohort higher educated seeing a higher duration of unemployment.

Speaker 13

The last few months that's actually come down.

Speaker 13

So I think given what we're seeing in terms of very low unemployment rate, 4.3% unemployment rate, the ratio of job openings, the number of unemployed is remaining pretty low, pretty stable.

Speaker 13

It feels to me that we're in a labor market that is pretty, frankly stable.

Speaker 13

And you're seeing the right amount of movement in the workforce.

Speaker 13

Now, obviously, it's not even it never is.

Speaker 13

But on aggregate, about private sector job creation running at 68,000 a month for the last six months, the unemployment rate again holding low, wage growth serving to be pretty steady.

Speaker 13

Feels like a stable labor market.

Speaker 2

At Mastercard, you get some unique data presumably to how the consumers are really spending the money.

Speaker 2

Is anything jumping out at you that might be a little different than maybe we would have thought here?

Speaker 2

Because we do have this K shaped economy.

Speaker 2

I'm not sure if you see that in your data.

Speaker 13

So I mean, I have a lot of views around the K shaped narrative, which we don't need to go into right now.

Speaker 13

But in terms of what we're seeing for the total picture in terms of overall spend.

Speaker 13

Of course, we saw a big increase in spending at the pump.

Speaker 13

So if you look at spending on fuel and convenience running about 20% positive on a year over year basis, and that showed up very quickly once gas prices rose.

Speaker 13

So that's the pass through of higher gas prices to the pump to the consumer.

Speaker 13

And then if you look at the broader basket of spend, consumers are still spending at a pretty decent clip in other categories, you're not really seeing a cutback, particularly in areas that you would think like discretionary spending for restaurants.

Speaker 5

是的

Mhmm.

Speaker 13

That's holding.

Speaker 5

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 5

We got this is important.

Speaker 5

And folks, we gotta run.

Speaker 5

We're out of time.

Speaker 5

But with Michelle, this is important.

Speaker 5

Are we more aware of the k shaped agony because of our new social media, our new discourse, our new communication versus fifty years ago or a hundred and fifty years ago.

Speaker 5

Because you're optimistic, and I hear this from people.

Speaker 5

It's just not that bad out there.

Speaker 5

And yet we're hearing it's bad out there every tick of the day.

Speaker 13

Well, of course, there's the headlines that are coming in fast and furious across the board.

Speaker 13

And then there's the data.

Speaker 13

And when you actually look at the numbers, and you see how people are spending, and how businesses are investing, you see an economy that is still moving forward.

Speaker 13

And that's why for us having this purview of looking at the data, it makes all the difference.

Speaker 5

I can't say enough how bottle you just heard from Michelle Meyer.

Speaker 5

You look at the market, you say, where is the optimism given the agony?

Speaker 5

And the answer is, she does what she does at Mastercard.

Speaker 5

She looks at the data.

Speaker 5
