Speaker 0

Hey there.

Speaker 0

Welcome to board game hot takes.

Speaker 1

My name is Tim.

Speaker 1

And this is Chris.

Speaker 2

This is Adam.

Speaker 0

And today, we're gonna be continuing our top 50 favorite games of all time countdown.

Speaker 0

We're gonna be hitting numbers 21 through 30 this week, starting at 30 and working our way down towards the top.

Speaker 0

Somehow that works.

Speaker 0

Just a reminder, if you haven't been listening to the last couple of weeks, we are gonna be just a little add in with each game we talk about.

Speaker 0

We're gonna cover our favorite mechanism in it.

Speaker 0

So a little bit, different than we've done this in the past, but we're going to jump right into these lists.

Speaker 0

We got a lot to cover.

Speaker 0

And I'm going to start with my number 30 game this week, a game that's a huge hit for Adam and Chris.

Speaker 0

That's Le Havre,

Speaker 1

designed by Uwe Rosenberg.

Speaker 1

We're starting out with some sarcasm in this episode, I see.

Speaker 1

I love the love the irony there.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 0

I I love Le Havre.

Speaker 0

This is one of those games on my list I don't own.

Speaker 0

I I I need to pick this one up because I love playing it.

Speaker 0

It's a really kind of simple concept, and that on the board, there are these spaces down the middle that you move the core boat marker.

Speaker 0

Everybody moves it.

Speaker 0

So when it's you'd start your turn, you move it down.

Speaker 0

And all that space does is tell you what resources to put on some shared kind of like stockpiles out on the board that anyone could grab from.

Speaker 0

And then on your turn, you're going to do one or two things.

Speaker 0

You're either going to pull resources off any one of those public stockpiles that are available, and they're going to continue to accumulate.

Speaker 0

If nobody takes them, then they'll keep adding up.

Speaker 0

Or you're going to take one action with your little action disc, and that means you're going to activate a building.

Speaker 0

At the start of the game, there's only a couple buildings available, mostly that allow you to build other buildings.

Speaker 0

And there's a public market that you spend resources and can put buildings out in front of you.

Speaker 0

But as the game goes on, there's more and more buildings available with different effects, different trade effects.

Speaker 0

There's something like 14 different resources in this game.

Speaker 0

And so there's all these ways to convert resources into other resources and then convert them into points.

Speaker 0

It's all very thematic because you're doing this at the types of buildings that you would do it at.

Speaker 1

When you were saying transferring one kind of resource into another kind of resource and then converting resources into points, I can see atoms melting down.

Speaker 1

就像……

Like.

Speaker 2

Immediate snooze over here when you start talking about that.

Speaker 0

It's like you go to the leather shop and you convert the cow into cowhides.

Speaker 0

I mean, really cool thematic stuff that's happening.

Speaker 0

Anyway, my favorite mechanism of the game is definitely just those accumulation spaces, because it makes a really interesting to me choice of, okay, on my turn, there's something I want to do.

Speaker 0

I want to go build a new building, or I want to activate this building before someone else takes that spot.

Speaker 0

But there is an accumulation of like 13 coins sitting in the resource pile there, and it's going to trigger one more time before my next turn.

Speaker 0

Do I let two more build on there, is somebody going to take it before me?

Speaker 0

I just love the tension of that choice and the idea that occasionally the best thing to do is just take take a huge stockpile of resources, even if you don't know what you're going to do with them yet, because it's too much to pass up.

Speaker 0

So that's one of the things I love about Le Havre.

Speaker 0

Generally, again, it's a fairly streamlined concept, but it gets more complicated as all the different buildings and different resource types come into play.

Speaker 0

And the game maybe the only reason it's a little lower for me is because I think it plays a little bit longer than it should.

Speaker 0

It tends to be quite a long game for what is a fairly simple process.

Speaker 0

I still enjoy it, though.

Speaker 0

Le Havre, my number 30 at this time in 2026.

Speaker 1

I think my favorite mechanism of this game was that they managed to work in this, like, agility thing where you have these piles of chits that end up stacking so high that it's sort of like Jenga, and you don't get that very often in a a worker placement game.

Speaker 1

So nicely done, Le Havre.

Speaker 2

Yeah, Le Havre.

Speaker 2

I had the one play, Tim, in Dallas, a five player play, I think, and it was late at night and it tends to go long like you said or, you know, I don't know if it tends to go long.

Speaker 2

This game definitely went long.

Speaker 2

We were just knocking over resources trying to pile them back up because there's one little square where they're supposed to go.

Speaker 2

Maybe I should go back to it but I won't look forward to that.

Speaker 0

Maybe not the ideal situation to play Le Havre, it's true.

Speaker 2

Maybe not.

Speaker 2

Alright, my number 30 game is Shamans.

Speaker 2

This is a little card game.

Speaker 2

We used to just be very high and talk about this one all the time on the show, but this one is suffering from lack of getting it to the the table.

Speaker 2

It's a little bit funky to explain the rules.

Speaker 2

So I've tried playing this one with, I don't know, less experienced groups before and it's been confusing to them.

Speaker 2

Nighthawk and Tater Tot tried to play with those guys one time while back and they're like, what's going on with this game, Adam?

Speaker 2

It's too bad because it's delightful game.

Speaker 2

And I'm gonna try to explain it.

Speaker 2

It's gonna sound confusing as heck because rules are kinda weird.

Speaker 2

It's a pseudo trick taking game.

Speaker 2

Lead player plays a, a card, you can follow the suit or not.

Speaker 2

Basically, if you have the high card of the lead suit, then you get some stuff.

Speaker 2

If you have the low card, then you get some stuff.

Speaker 2

If you close out the suit, so if you play the last card in the any suit that's out there on the board, then you to close it out.

Speaker 2

You get to do the bonus action associated with that suit and it might be, use one of your tokens, murder somebody else.

Speaker 2

And if you are a Shaman, you wanna try to murder a shadow.

Speaker 2

And then if that's the only shadow in the game, then the Shamans all win, get some points, and this has a a series of rounds that you're gonna play.

Speaker 2

So you wanna accumulate points, and, I think you wanna get 12.7 points, 12 I don't know what you wanna get some threshold of points and that's how you win the game.

Speaker 2

So this game gets pretty neat when, you know, everybody has like or a few people have five points, and maybe you're the shadow and you only have three points, so you can't win, but you want a certain Shaman to win rather than other Shamans to win.

Speaker 2

So there's a whole real juggling around of what you wanna do.

Speaker 2

And as you play this game more and more, you get a better idea, a better sense of how to manipulate the suits and when you wanna play what card to close out the suit, what cards to hold on to, what cards to ditch.

Speaker 2

Some pretty neat things going on here in this little card game Shamans beautiful artwork too, by the way.

Speaker 2

So I miss this game tons.

Speaker 2

I wanna get it played more.

Speaker 2

It's hard to find the spot to play it.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna start bringing it to the, the Fullerton, maybe making those guys play it over there and see what they think about it.

Speaker 2

Favorite mechanism here is when you get those shadow or shaman cards at the beginning of the game, beginning of each round, and you're peeking and, oh, gosh, I'm a shadow.

Speaker 2

You kinda get the chills and it's it's a little bit scary.

Speaker 2

You wanna be, you know, you wanna try to deceive everybody into thinking that you're on their team, one of the Shamans and helping everybody out.

Speaker 2

But then maybe there's only three left and everybody knows you're the shadow at that point and there's nothing that anybody can do to stop you.

Speaker 2

So you're on your way to to win in the game.

Speaker 2

That's Shamans Minor 30 game of all time.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's a great game and I'm saying this with no sarcasm whatsoever, but I really dislike trick takers generally and I dislike social deduction games.

Speaker 1

This game puts both of those into a package that's actually pretty enjoyable to play.

Speaker 1

I own this one.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Good choice.

Speaker 0

Somehow it kind of works, and I actually thought Adam was gonna say his favorite mechanism was the king making as he described just a little bit earlier description.

Speaker 2

No king making, Tim.

Speaker 2

Come on.

Speaker 1

So my number 30 has been all over the place on my list.

Speaker 1

It's Wonderland's War.

Speaker 2

Woah.

Speaker 2

哇。

Woah.

Speaker 2

哇。

Woah.

Speaker 2

Number 30 for Wonderland's War, Chris?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I'm getting there.

Speaker 1

I'm getting to an explanation on that.

Speaker 2

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

Designed by Tim Eisner, Ben Eisner, and Ian Moss, and published by Druid City Games.

Speaker 1

Like I said, this one has been all over the place on my list.

Speaker 1

In fact, in 2023, it made it all the way to number one.

Speaker 1

It's been in the top 10.

Speaker 1

Last couple of years, it started dropping down to lower places on the list.

Speaker 1

And I'll be honest with you.

Speaker 1

I feel like there's some real recency bias there because we haven't played this one in a while.

Speaker 1

And whenever I actually play this game, I get kinda high on it because there's so much good stuff going on.

Speaker 1

But, you know, I I went through the pub meeple rankings and, you know, gave my honest answers, and there's that's where it came out right now.

Speaker 1

I honestly feel like if we had say played this at our last con, it would probably have been higher on the list.

Speaker 1

So regardless, even number 30, I mean, that's a pretty great game.

Speaker 1

In terms of the favorite mechanism in this game, it's got to be the bag building.

Speaker 1

I love bag building.

Speaker 1

In fact, recently, I got a chance to play a couple games of Quacks of Quedlinburg with my niece, and that was so much fun.

Speaker 1

I just it's a mechanism that I love.

Speaker 1

And in Wonderland's War, it's done so nicely as this kind of whimsical way of conducting warfare when you're battling it out with your opponents.

Speaker 1

You're drawing a shit out of your bag, trying not to bust, but also finding yourself, you know, sometimes having to draw an extra shit to make it to a next space where even if you don't intend to win the battle, you're just trying to get up to a space where you can forge, which means you can take a token in your bag and you'll get a better one.

Speaker 1

It just creates excitement.

Speaker 1

It creates standing up around the table moments.

Speaker 1

I love bag building.

Speaker 1

I love the way it's done in Wonderland's War.

Speaker 1

And aside from that, I mean, this game just has such a delightful production, especially if you have the extra special version of it that has the the minis.

Speaker 1

Although, like, the standees are pretty awesome as well, but I think this game is a classic.

Speaker 1

I think it's gonna be in my collection forever.

Speaker 1

And who knows?

Speaker 1

Maybe we'll be seeing this one move back up the list in coming years if we manage to get it played again.

Speaker 0

Wonderland's War.

Speaker 0

What a cool game.

Speaker 0

A game that I think was on all three of our top tens the year that we first got introduced to it and still love coming back to this game.

Speaker 0

I think it's one of the few games that all three of us own a copy of as well.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I'll be talking about, Wonderland's War here in the weeks to come.

Speaker 2

One of my favorite games.

Speaker 2

It's a great game.

Speaker 0

Well, my number 29 is a pretty recent game that I've gotten introduced to, and it was just on Adam's list, I think, two weeks ago in our top 41 to 50.

Speaker 0

But this is Emberleaf.

Speaker 0

Emberleaf was designed by Frank West and published by the City of Games.

Speaker 0

Oh, also published by James Tomblin, co creator there.

Speaker 0

Emberleaf, you know, we just did a review of it a week ago.

Speaker 0

I'm not going to describe anything about it.

Speaker 0

It's set up on my table right now.

Speaker 0

Theoretically, in about an hour, I'll be playing this game if everybody shows up.

Speaker 0

It's very possible it'll be on the it'll be played tonight.

Speaker 0

But this game is it's just got a beautiful, colorful table presence.

Speaker 0

And my favorite part about it are the the journey cards and the way this mechanism works and and how it introduces those to you over the course of the game.

Speaker 0

Because essentially, you're gonna pick up these little personal quests over the course of the game.

Speaker 0

Maybe you'll end up with, like, somewhere between eight and eleven of them.

Speaker 0

And they all have varying conditions you're trying to meet.

Speaker 0

Every single card in this huge stack, it must be like a 100 cards, is a unique quest.

Speaker 0

Every single one of them is different.

Speaker 0

But it's not like you have access to them at the beginning of the game.

Speaker 0

You don't know what you're going to be going towards.

Speaker 0

There's this nice tempo that you're going to be picking these up.

Speaker 0

You'll start with one maybe in the first couple rounds, and you pick up another one quickly.

Speaker 0

But over the course of the game, you're going to continue to build these and watch for the ones that are going to really match with the strategy you're leaning towards.

Speaker 0

These drive completely different strategies on the board.

Speaker 0

The other cool thing about it is that almost all of the quests that you're trying to complete, your fellow players can mess with you on them.

Speaker 0

They can see what you're trying to accomplish.

Speaker 0

And there are these nice, big, full sized playing cards that are very visible across the table, and they can be seeing how to stop you from doing it.

Speaker 0

There's a lot of ways to do that.

Speaker 0

So it's a very interactive game.

Speaker 0

And I I just I think the way that that whole scoring mechanism was built into this game is is fantastic.

Speaker 0

So the favorite cards is my favorite mechanism of Emberleaf.

Speaker 2

Emberleaf is a fantastic game.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna talk about it here very soon, so I'll hold my thoughts for two games from now.

Speaker 0

Oh, that must have been Chris's, Chris talked about it two weeks ago then.

Speaker 0

For some reason, I thought that was

Speaker 1

It was.

Speaker 1

Although interesting that a game that we just played is, you know, that it's a new game to us this year, and in fact, it's a new game, new game.

Speaker 1

It just came out that this game made all three of our top 50 lists.

Speaker 1

I mean, that's pretty impressive.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So far that in Reforest, I think we've we've all talked about.

Speaker 2

I don't I

Speaker 0

don't know if it's gotten to all of our lists yet, but I I think we have all covered it.

Speaker 0

But, yeah, a couple new pretty big hits for us this year, which is cool.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

好了。

Alright.

Speaker 2

Before I do my number 29, going back to Shamans real quick, that was designed by Cedric Chabusei and the art, beautiful art by Maude Chalmel.

Speaker 2

So now my 29, I think Chris talked about this one either last week or the week before, is Tag Team.

Speaker 2

This is a game we've been having a lot of fun with Chris and I especially on, Board Game Arena.

Speaker 2

They have a nice implementation of it and we're getting more familiar with the different the different characters you can be and what sort of cards they have and how to use those.

Speaker 2

It's a lot of fun.

Speaker 2

So this one's designed by Grisha German and Corinthian LeBrath, art by Javier Ginfriedurin.

Speaker 2

Just a little refresher here, it's kind of like a old school arcade game where you're picking two fighters to fight against a different two fighters.

Speaker 2

You're gonna control these two fighters.

Speaker 2

They each have, I don't know, eight cards associated with them, something like that.

Speaker 2

And you make a combined deck with your the cards of your fighters.

Speaker 2

And you're just starting off with two cards that goes into a little battle deck, and you're just gonna flip those cards really quick and do whatever it says to do on those cards.

Speaker 2

It's a an auto battler.

Speaker 2

And really, one of your only choices, one of the only mechanisms here is at the end of each round, you draw three cards off that combined deck, you pick one, and you pick which order is gonna go in amongst those those two cards that you've already played.

Speaker 2

So now you have three cards in your auto battle deck, you're trying to counter what the other player did to you, so maybe the other player attacked on their second card.

Speaker 2

So you wanna put a shield in on your second card and try to block that attack, and if you block you'll get some little bonus, increase your own fighter strength.

Speaker 2

Then you just have hit points, whoever loses their hit points first loses the game.

Speaker 2

Chris and I had one where we had a double k o.

Speaker 2

I hadn't seen that yet.

Speaker 2

He knocked me out and I knocked him out and double k o is what it, you know, kinda said on board game arena.

Speaker 2

Board Game Arena

It makes you on the board game arena implementation has that sort of feel of an old school fighter game where you can knock each other out, which I thought that was pretty fun.

Speaker 2

Anyway, the, where should I put my card is a fave my favorite mechanism.

Speaker 2

It's such a simple choice, but, you know, the little cat and mouse okay.

Speaker 2

Chris had this giant attack here on, on the fourth card, I think, or was it the third card?

Speaker 2

该死。

Dang it.

Speaker 2

I can't remember.

Speaker 2

So I'm gonna slide this counter card in here, right there, and that'll shift these in the appropriate way.

Speaker 2

Now I'll have a big old attack against Chris coming up.

Speaker 2

So 2025 game, Tag Team is my number 29 game of all time.

Speaker 1

This game is absolutely addictive.

Speaker 1

Ever since we started playing this one, I crave playing more of it.

Speaker 1

Like, every time, you know, that comes up that there's a turn of mine on DGA, I'm very excited about it.

Speaker 1

Having gotten very good at it yet, I've been getting my butt kicked a whole lot.

Speaker 1

One of the things that I really like about this is how different the fighters are.

Speaker 1

I mean, they truly have entirely different combat mechanisms.

Speaker 1

And one of the things that's also nice about that is that they give you a little guide at the bottom of each card, each player on how complex they are to use.

Speaker 1

Like, there's some that are fairly complex to understand how to use them very well, There are others that are very simple.

Speaker 1

So extremely, extremely enjoyable game.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I remember when Adam first described this to us, I was like, are there actually any interesting effects happening, or is it just like punch or block?

Speaker 0

It's crazy, the effects that these cards have.

Speaker 0

I've played with several of the factions now, and a it's a very fun, interesting puzzle every time to play with them.

Speaker 0

Very, very interesting game.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

Well, my number 29 is Azul designed by Michael Keasling, published by Next Move Games.

Speaker 1

Adam, please don't be mad at me for having Azul this low on my list.

Speaker 2

I get it.

Speaker 1

But, you know, there's so many good games out there.

Speaker 1

Having said that, I do truly feel like Azul is one of those all time great games, a true classic in the sense of, say, Settlers of Catan, you know, games that will be around forever.

Speaker 1

And part of that is because the game is so simple in concept, yet the strategy is so deep.

Speaker 1

It's also been on my list moving pretty significantly upward over the course of time.

Speaker 1

When I first learned this game, I think it was, like, 2022.

Speaker 1

It made it to my list in 2023 at 34.

Speaker 1

And since then, it's been moving steadily up.

Speaker 1

Although in 2025, it was at number 11 and it's dropped down.

Speaker 1

Can't exactly say why that is.

Speaker 1

It may just be because there were more things exciting to me, and I've been playing different games.

Speaker 1

But this game will be another one of those like Wonderland's War that will be in my collection forever.

Speaker 1

It's one of the games that I bring to family gatherings and sometimes get people to play with me.

Speaker 1

My wife is willing to play with me.

Speaker 1

My son is even willing to play with me.

Speaker 1

So talk about a a great game that you can get to the table with almost almost anybody.

Speaker 1

So my favorite mechanism in Azul is probably the fact that every round you're trying to figure out who is gonna be left with the remnants at the end of the round.

Speaker 1

You're pulling these tiles off of these little factory circles, and then the rest drop into the middle floor where they accumulate over time.

Speaker 1

And sometimes you end up having groups that accumulate to very, very large numbers that nobody really has any use for, and you can't put in your board on your wall.

Speaker 1

But what that means is someone's gonna end up taking them, putting them on their floor, and taking a lot of negative points.

Speaker 1

And there's always that.

Speaker 1

Talk about cat and mouse.

Speaker 1

It's a cat and mouse game of who's gonna end up getting stuck with the garbage at the end of the round, and that is tremendously exciting.

Speaker 1

I wish I was better at it.

Speaker 1

It's like a it was an art.

Speaker 1

It's like an alchemy.

Speaker 1

It's like there's a sorcery that goes into figuring that out.

Speaker 1

Some people are very good at it like Adam.

Speaker 1

Some people like me are not very good at it and end up eating up a lot of, really crappy tiles, but such a fun puzzle and I absolutely love Azul.

Speaker 1

It'll be on my list forever.

Speaker 1

Where it'll be will vary by year, but it's always gonna be there.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Azul

Azul was already on my list.

Speaker 0

I we had a I had a really fun play with Adam and and Sarah just a few weeks back when we got together in person, the three of us together, that was a cutthroat game.

Speaker 0

Everybody knew exactly what they were doing, and it was tough.

Speaker 0

It was tough.

Speaker 0

It's good game, though.

Speaker 0

I think, Adam, you won that one, right?

Speaker 2

I pulled it out on one of the final turns of the game.

Speaker 2

I set myself up where I could get three reds in my third row and get a bunch of points.

Speaker 2

And you saw that one, and I think you took those away from me or blocked me out of them somehow.

Speaker 2

But I also left myself five blacks That's in the bottom row, which I don't think anybody saw that.

Speaker 2

That gave me blacks in all of my rows, so I got an extra 10 points for

Speaker 0

what it was.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I was like, Oh, it's only a one point black.

Speaker 0

Who cares about those five blacks?

Speaker 0

And then I missed that he was going to get the full 10 points for the full set of them.

Speaker 1

You can't make those kind of mistakes with Adam.

Speaker 2

You just got to see into the future on Azul.

Speaker 2

I love the interplay of offense versus defense.

Speaker 2

I like to leave my fourth or fifth row open for defensive purposes a lot of times if I can, so I can take all the garbage if there is a bunch of garbage and try to turn a negative into positive.

Speaker 2

《Azul》

That's what a great game, Azul.

Speaker 0

Little pro tip there for all of you out there listening.

Speaker 0

Trying to beat Adam and Azul.

Speaker 0

我的第

My No.

Speaker 0

28 is a game I'm pretty sure isn't on either of these guys' lists.

Speaker 0

This is Marco Polo II in the service of the con, and I am explicitly calling out Marco Polo II, which is the sequel to The Voyages of Marco Polo, designed by Simone Luciani and Daniel Tucciini, art by Dennis Lohausen, and probably my least favorite thing about the game.

Speaker 0

Other than the art, though, and the way that the game looks, how old fashioned it looks, this is just a really, really fascinating, challenging euro game.

Speaker 0

It's a dice worker placement game with some interesting restrictions on the dice.

Speaker 0

It's a very hard game to do well at because you gotta spend a lot of resources and set yourself up right just right to move around this map and try to get to locations that will allow you to fill orders.

Speaker 0

What I love about this game, my favorite part, and actually the thing that I think elevates it above the first version of Marco Polo, is the resource locations are changing throughout the course of the game.

Speaker 0

There's this nice little stack of variable resource tiles, so every round it's different resource setups depending on what you're spending at them.

Speaker 0

It also adds some other little triggers, little mechanisms that make this just a little bit more interesting than the first version of Marco Polo.

Speaker 0

But I think even just the start of game setup and the variability that it brings, how every location is going to have different worker placement spots on it, or different goals, different benefits when you go there, and things like that.

Speaker 0

Aside from that, super variable asymmetry with the characters that you play with, with the factions you play with, and the goals that you're trying to work towards in the game.

Speaker 0

Every game feels like a really challenging puzzle.

Speaker 0

I'm not very good at this game, but I really love playing it.

Speaker 0

Marco Polo II, another one of those games that is not on my shelf right now and it belongs there.

Speaker 0

This will be added to my collection soon, I think.

Speaker 2

Tim,Board Game Arena

Tim, which Marco Polo version is on Board Game Arena?

Speaker 0

That's the first one, the Voyages of Marco Polo.

Speaker 0

You know what?

Speaker 0

Marco Polo II is, as well.

Speaker 0

Both of them are on there now.

Speaker 0

If you guys haven't played this one, and if you're interested at all, I'd be happy to play it with you.

Speaker 0

It's got similar rules to the original one, but it just feels a little bit more interesting.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I like to go back and try.

Speaker 2

I think I've played it once or twice only on board game arena.

Speaker 2

I'd like to try the second version.

Speaker 2

I remember the first version of it feeling just very tight, hard to move anywhere, at least for me, unless you really pay attention to that.

Speaker 2

I'd to try this the second implementation of it and see how that goes.

Speaker 2

It's been a while since I've played it, so I'd like to go back and try Marco Polo too.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That's an interesting thing about this one.

Speaker 0

It I know maybe that's partly why I like it, although I don't think that's the main focus of that.

Speaker 0

This is Everybody says it feels easier to move around on the map, which some people are like, Oh, I don't like it as much.

Speaker 0

I miss the restriction with it.

Speaker 0

But that wasn't really the fun part of the original Marco Polo, and so they made that a little bit easier to do so you could do all of what I think are the fun parts of the game here.

Speaker 0

So I think that's why I prefer it, although I still love the first one as well.

Speaker 1

Like Adam, I'd like to try this one also.

Speaker 1

I remember liking, if not loving Marco Polo, the original.

Speaker 1

So this one sounds like a lot of

Speaker 0

Feature review time.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

My number 28 game, I alluded to it, it's Emberleaf.

Speaker 2

Tim just talked about this one and we just had a feature review.

Speaker 2

Like Tim said, my favorite part about this game is the the card play system.

Speaker 2

So it's all I'm cheating there because there's a bunch of things that go into the card play system, but you're putting cards out on your player board.

Speaker 2

You have room for, I think, six initially, and then if you can expand that out to eight cards on your player board, and you have to decide when you're gonna shift them over, when you're gonna make them dance.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

So I thought that was kinda gimmicky when I first heard about a card dancing system.

Speaker 2

Really, it's just when are you gonna slide your cards to the left and that might trigger a bunch of different effects.

Speaker 2

And have you programmed your cards on your player board to do all the right triggering at the right times because they trigger in a certain order.

Speaker 2

It's gonna trigger first on the left most top one and then the left most bottom one and then so on and so forth down the line.

Speaker 2

And hopefully, those first few that you trigger set up the the later ones that you're gonna trigger, and it's just a joy to get that right.

Speaker 2

You have the map out there with the different little clearings.

Speaker 2

You're trying to fill up those clearings with your own buildings, make lines of those, get a bunch of points there.

Speaker 2

And like Tim said, those objective cards or quest cards, whatever they're called, it's variable.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

So you have to time that right.

Speaker 2

Oh, there's that one.

Speaker 2

How am I gonna get that one right now before anyone else scoops it up?

Speaker 2

And there's different ways to do that too, so you have to be very thoughtful in your approach to Emberleaf.

Speaker 2

Having tons of fun playing this one.

Speaker 2

I don't have a game going right now.

Speaker 2

We should get one going again on board game arena.

Speaker 1

I'm in.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Emberleaf

Emberleaf is my number 28.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

One of the cool things that the game does too as far as those card markets, you know, you can buy both characters to add to your that you're gonna add to your, like, tableau to trigger as well as the favorite cards, the quest cards, is that whenever somebody takes either one of those, you take another one off the end of that row and move two new ones in there.

Speaker 0

So that's kind of neat.

Speaker 0

I think that's a solution to a lot of games where the card row gets stale, but I've never seen it done before.

Speaker 0

And and I think it was a really smart solution for a very common basic problem.

Speaker 0

So nicely done, Frank Quest.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You know, this is a game that can make you feel incredibly clever.

Speaker 1

There are a few games where if you program your turns right, you can really feel this sense of, man, I just I work that one just right.

Speaker 1

Another one is sulking, the Mayan calendar that, is also it also involves some programming like this game does.

Speaker 1

And I love it in games like that when you do get it right and you just feel so clever.

Speaker 1

It's such a nice feeling.

Speaker 1

好了,我榜单上第28名是《Heat: Pedal to the Metal》,由Azul Alexandrov Granerud和Daniel Skull Peterson设计,Days of Wonder出版。

Well, coming in at number 28 on my list is Heat pedal to the metal design by Azul Alexandrov Granerud and Daniel Skull Peterson published by Days of Wonder.

Speaker 1

This one has moved around on the list a little bit, but not a whole lot.

Speaker 1

It was on, since 2024 for me, and it's, you know, hovered in the twenty, thirty, 40 range.

Speaker 1

What's interesting about this to me though is that when we originally did our review of this, which we reviewed in the same episode is Downforce, I felt like the general disposition of the group was Downforce was a better game, more streamlined, more efficient, and a lot of fun.

Speaker 1

But I have found over the course of the years since we've played those games the first time, I have kind of not I won't say sour.

Speaker 1

I mean, I still enjoy Downforce a great deal, but I don't think about it a whole lot.

Speaker 1

Whereas I do find myself enjoying and thinking about Heat pedal to the metal a whole lot more.

Speaker 1

And in fact, I even played it a few times with my local game group because one of the folks in my group has a copy of this, and we've enjoyed it a lot.

Speaker 1

This one does such a great job of thematically incorporating the elements of racing, including the downshifting.

Speaker 1

And as you downshift, you have if you downshift a lot or if you shift up a lot, then you're gonna create heat in your engine, which, you know, hence the name heat pedal to the metal is because heat is the thing that you're trying to fight against.

Speaker 1

The more heat you've got in your engine, the more susceptible you are to having mechanical breakdowns.

Speaker 1

And so you're trying to minimize the heat in your engine.

Speaker 1

And I'm also going to dovetail this one into my favorite mechanism in the game, which is how that heat is used.

Speaker 1

You're drawing cards from a deck that are gonna indicate how far you can go, but you're also gonna be drawing in the heat cards that you end up having to put into your deck as you do things that are more risky, like going around a corner too fast or shifting down or shifting up too far or, you know, there there are various things that you're gonna do that might give you a little bit of extra oomph, but you have to put some heat cards into your deck.

Speaker 1

And then they start to clog your deck.

Speaker 1

And then when you wanna be taking these big turns, you end up drawing a bunch of heat cards instead.

Speaker 1

And I think that was really clever.

Speaker 1

It's a really incredibly thematic way of building a feeling of racing into this game.

Speaker 1

所以《Heat: Pedal to the Metal》排在我榜单的第28位。

So heat pedal to the metal, my number 28.

Speaker 0

So when do you two guys own a copy of this game?

Speaker 0

没有。

Nope.

Speaker 1

没有。

No.

Speaker 1

Although I wouldn't mind owning a copy of this game.

Speaker 0

I'd like to try this on the table.

Speaker 0

At some point, I've still never played it anywhere but Tabletop Simulator.

Speaker 0

So I would love to, give it a shot and see if it starts to get a little more exciting for me like it has for you guys.

Speaker 2

克里斯,我超爱《Heat: Pedal to the Metal》。

Chris, I love Heat pedal to the metal.

Speaker 2

We've been well, we haven't played in a while on Board Game Arena, which has a nice implementation.

Speaker 2

But we had a a string there where we would go back to back to back and keep this one on a constant loop.

Speaker 2

I like doing the three game or the three race series that you can do on Board Game Marine where you accumulate points depending on what place you finish in, and you can try to catch up, you know, in the later races if you didn't finish first or you gotta maintain that lead if you if you had it early.

Speaker 2

And you can throw in, you know, six racers or something like that and Board Game Marine does a nice nice job of managing all the other racers.

Speaker 2

You don't have to worry about it.

Speaker 2

You mentioned it quickly, Chris, the the corner management is a fun aspect of this game for me where you're looking ahead.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

I can hit this corner at speed five or four or five, and then those s turns in some of those where you really have to manage, there's a you know, you have to hit this one at three and this one at two, so you gotta wind your way through the corners and manage those correctly.

Speaker 2

You're gonna up shift or down shift, that determines how many cards you get to play or have to play in some cases.

Speaker 2

So Heat, really fun game.

Speaker 2

I haven't played it in a while, fell off my list this year, but still a game that and now that we're talking about it, I really wanna go back to and play.

Speaker 2

《Heat: Pedal to the Metal》。

Heat, pedal to the metal.

Speaker 0

Well, my number 27 this year is it's the number two closest to the top tiny little card game in my list this year.

Speaker 0

This one is Sea Salt and Paper.

Speaker 0

It's been a favorite of mine since I first played it.

Speaker 0

I really like this simple little set collection game, the idea being that you're either drawing two cards off the top of a deck and discarding one, or you're picking one up from one of the two discard piles.

Speaker 0

It's got some fun interplay there because you know when you put it into one of those discard piles, you're making it available to the people that are around the table from you.

Speaker 0

But maybe if they don't pick it up, it'll still be there available for you later.

Speaker 0

So some fun choices there.

Speaker 0

It doesn't seem like it'd be that interesting to keep going back to, but the reality is that even with this small deck of cards, there is a whole bunch of different effects that you're trying to put together, whether it's some sets that score off each other, whether it's comboing two cards together that give you a one time instant effect and a point, or even if you can collect the four mermaids in the deck and just win the whole game outright.

Speaker 0

But you basically play this over a series of rounds until somebody's got 30 to 40 points, depending on player count.

Speaker 0

My favorite mechanism of it, though, is what adds some really exciting tension to the end of every hand of this game.

Speaker 0

And that is this little push your luck element that says once somebody gets to seven points in their hand or on the table, they can basically end the round.

Speaker 0

But they can do it in one of two ways.

Speaker 0

They can either just say stop, in which case everybody reveals their hands, you score them up, you just get the points for it.

Speaker 0

Or you say, Last chance.

Speaker 0

And last chance lets everybody else around the table take one more turn to see if they can catch you.

Speaker 0

But if you're able to win on a last chance, you get some significant scoring benefits.

Speaker 0

Like the other players don't score all of their points and you get some bonus points, but if they manage to beat you once you do that, then you're actually going to get a very small scoring hand and everyone else will score like normal.

Speaker 0

So add some really exciting tension.

Speaker 0

If you're having a great hand, if you're building up the right stuff to push your luck and try that.

Speaker 0

Or maybe even surprise someone else by building up a little past seven, and then they try to push their luck and it turns out you can already beat them.

Speaker 0

So a lot of fun interaction in this really simple card game.

Speaker 0

Plays great, two to four players.

Speaker 0

Daniel and I play it regularly.

Speaker 0

This is our go to whenever we just want twenty, thirty minutes of fun to sit down to.

Speaker 0

But play with bigger player groups and always have a good time with it.

Speaker 0

So, Sea Salt and Paper, sitting in my number 27, designed by Bruno Katala.

Speaker 2

Sea Salt and Paper, this is one you're always raving about, Tim.

Speaker 2

I've only played it a few times, so I haven't had the opportunity to play it as much and see all the nuances that you're talking about.

Speaker 2

I have a good enough time playing this one, but it hasn't reached that upper echelon for me yet.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Same here.

Speaker 1

It's a fun enough game and it's really fun to look at.

Speaker 1

It's very pretty and I like the art.

Speaker 2

Mine number 27 not a very small game at all.

Speaker 2

This is a Frozen Frontier right there by my finger on my shelf there.

Speaker 1

一

A

Speaker 2

squat little box on this one, it's pretty hefty.

Speaker 2

This is one, it's got all kinds of mechanisms in it.

Speaker 2

The single designer is Andrey Kulipayev, but I believe I read something where Ivan Lashen, the designer of Smartphone Inc was at least consulted on this one and had a little bit of a hand in developing this one.

Speaker 2

Lots of artists here, Alexander Gorbinov, Oleg Proshin, Aleksey Shirokic, and Pavel Vofira.

Speaker 2

This is from 2024 as a Kickstarter game.

Speaker 2

Like I said, it's a a big old box.

Speaker 2

You got these huge maps, modular maps that you're building, and with these segment of maps that you're using, you throw in a different pile of cards similar to like SETI or Shackleton base where it's variable, the cards that you're gonna use based on, you know, which set of maps, which set of locations are you gonna use in the game.

Speaker 2

Man, so I enjoy this one a ton.

Speaker 2

Each chunk of map that you put in there is a different city, and you're developing these different cities with different little scientists or engineers that you put in cities to get different bonuses.

Speaker 2

It's got some tableau building, some engine building that you're doing with your player board.

Speaker 2

So a lots to like here.

Speaker 2

One of my favorite I guess my favorite system in I do like the market and the economic system in this game, which is pretty neat, but I think I'm gonna go with the contract system in this game.

Speaker 2

I believe there's only three rounds of play, but you get a lot of actions per round.

Speaker 2

At the end of each round, you're sort of vying for these different contracts.

Speaker 2

And I forget who gets to go first on the the contract bidding.

Speaker 2

There's some system in the game where if you have the most of this or the most of that, then you get to bid first on these different contracts and you earn a lot of points from these contracts.

Speaker 2

So at the end of each round, there's I think depending on player count, four or five different contract.

Speaker 2

You might have some contracts in your hand that you can go for first, but you can see, oh shoot, Chris has a bunch of this.

Speaker 2

I think helium three or ice nine or whatever is the magic resource that's the most valuable here.

Speaker 2

If you have a lot of this helium three, you can get a lot of points with these different contracts.

Speaker 2

So you're trying to game it out just right, so you get to bid first on these contracts and you can swoop up that one that maybe Chris had enough money for, but now he can't get it because you swooped it up first and maybe he's out now of contracts that he can bid for.

Speaker 2

So it goes to Tim, you're gonna pick up this other one now, it goes back to you and you can pick up another contract that you had enough money for, but nobody else could get.

Speaker 2

So that one's kind of safe.

Speaker 2

So I like that you have to be smart about which contracts you're gonna pick up and game it out during the round, so you can get yourself a little points at the end of each round.

Speaker 2

Lots going on here in Frozen Frontier.

Speaker 2

I haven't played this one in a while.

Speaker 2

Sarah loves this one.

Speaker 2

It's great at two players, great higher player counts, relatively quick even though a lot of giant board and a lot going on here.

Speaker 2

Frozen Frontier, right off the bat, can just do stuff on your first turn of the game.

Speaker 2

They get you some cool points and get you get you going right away.

Speaker 2

So there's not much of a buildup.

Speaker 2

I mean, there is a buildup, but right beginning of turn one, you start doing cool stuff and the game just gets going.

Speaker 2

Frozen Frontier, my number 27 game of all time.

Speaker 1

I'm looking forward to playing this one again.

Speaker 1

We had that one play that we did, and I feel like I need to experience it again.

Speaker 1

Who knows?

Speaker 1

Maybe it'll make it onto my list.

Speaker 0

Yeah, agreed.

Speaker 0

I could barely remember the mechanisms, even the thing you were just talking about, Adam.

Speaker 0

Was like, Oh, I kind of remember how that works now.

Speaker 0

So I remember having a very good time with it.

Speaker 0

I felt like it had a lot of downtime, but I wonder if we tried it at three, if that'd go a little bit quicker for us and be a little bit more of a fun experience too.

Speaker 0

But yeah, I would like to try it again.

Speaker 0

Cool game no matter what.

Speaker 1

So one of the things that I like about this segment of our top game list, the 30 to 21 ish range, is that this is where you see a lot of interesting things happening.

Speaker 1

It's the sort of the transition zone.

Speaker 1

It's right in the middle.

Speaker 1

You see games moving up and down.

Speaker 1

This also tends to be a place where a lot of new games pop in, and that's kind of interesting to see what's, you know, new and hot in my mind.

Speaker 1

And case in point is my number 27, which is Turn and Taxis designed by Andreas Seyfarth and Karen Seyfarth and published by Hansom Gluck.

Speaker 1

Now, I mean, who in the world would have thought that I'd have in my top 30 this, like, brown, bland 2006 route building game?

Speaker 1

I mean, come on.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

That just doesn't even seem like a reasonable thing.

Speaker 1

But this is a new one on my list because we just started playing this one.

Speaker 1

Thanks to Adam and his recommendation, and it's another one of those games that is strangely addictive.

Speaker 1

And I think the thing that I like about this game most of all is well well, first of all, let me go back in a sec for a second and just talk about the mechanisms.

Speaker 1

Overall, you're drawing cards and you're building these routes, but you also have to keep building progressively longer routes in order to to complete the basically, to end the game.

Speaker 1

It's when somebody makes a route of a certain length, but you have to build up progressively.

Speaker 1

So a three, then a four, then a five.

Speaker 1

And there are also little segments of routes that you get bonus points from.

Speaker 1

Now the trick is that if you can't continue a route based on the cards that you draw and you only get to draw one or two cards depending on the circumstances per round, then you're out of luck.

Speaker 1

Then you have to start over again, and that's like the the touch of death in this game if you can't build a route and you have to abandon a route.

Speaker 1

So I think that's my favorite mechanism in this is that tension between do I wanna keep taking the cards for the ultimate route, the one that's gonna get me the most points and hope that I'm gonna be able to pull that one together, or do I wanna take the ones that are most easily usable right now even though they might not score me the most points?

Speaker 1

And it does create this kind of, like, nerve racking, oh, I I got these cards, but I need to draw one more that's gonna get me the right spot.

Speaker 1

It's a kind of push your luck in a way that I would never have thought of in a game like this, and I find that really endearing and exciting as well.

Speaker 1

Now I've also had a lot of games.

Speaker 1

In fact, I even I was gonna say I had a lot of games where I've ended up having to abandon routes.

Speaker 1

I had one game that I playing was with, friend of the show, Andy Schwartz, who is very good at this game, and I think I ended up abandoning, like, three routes.

Speaker 1

And he's like, dude, have you ever played this game before?

Speaker 1

This is what's your deal, man?

Speaker 1

But, lots of fun.

Speaker 1

Turn in taxis.

Speaker 1

Who knows?

Speaker 1

Maybe we'll get a refresh on this game and, in something that looks a little bit more exciting than these old, like, 2,006 artworks.

Speaker 0

Chris, I tried to hook you up on this.

Speaker 0

One of our Discord members was selling a copy for, like, $40.

Speaker 0

And I pinged you on there, but no response as usual on Discord from Chris.

Speaker 0

So you missed out

Speaker 2

on it.

Speaker 1

Social media man scares me.

Speaker 0

Chris was in the forest camping instead of looking at a smartphone like he's supposed to be doing in today's modern age.

Speaker 2

《Turn in Taxis》

Turning Taxis is a delightful game.

Speaker 2

Chris, you gave me credit for introducing.

Speaker 2

I was introduced by Andy Schwartz.

Speaker 2

He was just looking for more people to pound on in this game.

Speaker 2

He's great at this one.

Speaker 2

But I had a lot of fun playing it, and Chris and I had some good back and forth.

Speaker 2

We're about evenly matched on Turning Taxis, so that's fun to have those battles with you, Chris.

Speaker 2

It's another great game.

Speaker 2

You described it well, Turning Taxis.

Speaker 0

Andy Schwartz, the only proper noun on this podcast that gets more mentions than Azul or March of the Ants.

Speaker 0

好的。

All right.

Speaker 0

My number 26 is quite a shift from previous years because I think it's always been on my top 10 to 20 list.

Speaker 0

But this is Tapestry sitting at number 26.

Speaker 0

We've talked about it a lot.

Speaker 0

Designed by Jamie Stegmeyer and published by Stonemire Games.

Speaker 0

Still love it.

Speaker 0

Chris and I just finished an amazing game today where I had a huge upset win at the end of it.

Speaker 0

Was shocked I've managed to pull off a win on it.

Speaker 0

But I think it's suffering a little bit just from most of my plays being on Board Game Arena without most of the expansion content.

Speaker 0

And the game, if you played a lot, definitely can benefit from that expansion content, specifically the capital city maps, which I think is the most interesting thing about the expansions, and those are not included on board game arena.

Speaker 0

And that actually is my favorite part about this.

Speaker 0

Even with the base ones, the capital city maps are my favorite mechanism.

Speaker 0

The idea being that you're essentially finding ways to build these little income buildings into your little local version of your city.

Speaker 0

You've got this big map of the world, of this huge globe that's building out over the course of the game, and you've got your main capital, which is represented by two of your outposts sitting there.

Speaker 0

Then you've got, next to your player board, this little nine by nine grid of spaces with some of them blocked out, representing different types of geographical things on your map that you're trying to build around.

Speaker 0

It's pretty clever because you're, one, getting these little buildings onto the map so that it creates better income for you in the future.

Speaker 0

Think of the economy of building up a civilization.

Speaker 0

The more stuff that you've got out there, the more money you're producing or the more food, things like that.

Speaker 0

But then also, there's this cool player interaction where you're trying to race up these four tracks of the board, and the first person to reach any particular segment of one of these tracks gets one of these big landmark buildings.

Speaker 0

And there are these beautiful clay looking three d models, Those get plopped down in your map, they're different shapes and stuff like that.

Speaker 0

You're trying to just plug them in just perfectly so you can fill out your map.

Speaker 0

And then there's a couple of cool bonuses that come with them.

Speaker 0

If you manage to fill in a whole little 3x3 segment in that 9x9 grid, you get an instant resource from it, which is a huge benefit in this game because it might let you take a whole another action, another turn.

Speaker 0

Or at the end of each round, you score each row and column that's filled up.

Speaker 0

So I just find this a really fun puzzle, a fun little bonus that, you know, that you're working towards every game.

Speaker 0

Sometimes you can ignore that map, depending on the civilization you've got and the strategy you're going with.

Speaker 0

But some of my favorite games are when I really do a great job of filling that map out and always creates a fun puzzle for me.

Speaker 0

So Tapestry is still super fun for me, and, it's fallen a little bit, but I still love it.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Filling out that nine by I think it's nine by nine grid in Tapestry is one of my favorite parts of the game.

Speaker 2

Good way to get points.

Speaker 2

I can never find good ways to get points in this game, so I usually try to just concentrate on that that grid and get the cool little clay sculptures you're talking about, Tim.

Speaker 2

Anytime I can get any row or column completed, I'm like, yes, I did something in this game because you guys seem to be able to march up all of those tracks so quickly, so efficiently.

Speaker 2

I'm just like, what?

Speaker 2

Why?

Speaker 2

When do I roll the science dice?

Speaker 2

I don't even know.

Speaker 2

So, yeah, that grid, that nine by nine grid, your little city location that you're trying to fill in, that's a delightful part of Tapestry for me as well.

Speaker 1

Well, I'm gonna make it a three for here and say that that's also my favorite part of this game.

Speaker 1

I love filling out that city.

Speaker 1

Maybe not my favorite mechanism because I will probably talk about this game and I will list something else as my favorite mechanism.

Speaker 1

But my favorite action in the game is building out that city.

Speaker 1

Don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Speaker 1

I think it's great.

Speaker 2

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 2

My number 26 game is Barrage.

Speaker 2

This is Tomaso Batisto and Simone Luciani.

Speaker 2

Published by Craneo Creations back in '20 way back in 2019, this game's been around.

Speaker 2

Seems still new to me.

Speaker 2

Anyway, this game is incredibly tight.

Speaker 2

It's difficult.

Speaker 2

You're trying to control the flow of these water drops, put them through your your different dams that you're building, either on the mountain region, the foothills, the lowlands region, and it's cost more to build them up in the mountains, but that's because there's steeper flow, potential for more points when the water flows through these dams in the higher elevations.

Speaker 2

Man, I just think about this one and it's just hard to get points when you're playing a competitive battle on this one.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

It also has a neat resource management where you're putting your resources on your player board and then these spin around your little wheel and they're gone until the wheel spins all the way back around.

Speaker 2

It's one of the actions you can take is give your wheel a couple more spins to try to get those resources back sooner.

Speaker 2

A lot going on here in this game.

Speaker 2

I also like the this the hot debate here, is this a worker placement game?

Speaker 2

Is it a are the workers really just action points and you're deciding where to put them for which action you wanna do.

Speaker 2

It's like a hybrid of it is the most I'll concede on that aspect of the game.

Speaker 2

But my favorite part of this is the the infrastructure.

Speaker 2

Where you're gonna put your infrastructure on that map and then the player interaction that results from that.

Speaker 2

And you're gonna block out Tim from his awesome dam that he built here in the foothills section.

Speaker 2

You can snake that water from before it even gets to his dam and control the flow and bit yourself tons of points while denying Tim a bunch of points.

Speaker 2

But that, that player interaction with the the common board has got to be my favorite part of Barrage.

Speaker 2

Incredibly tight game, incredibly fun game.

Speaker 2

That's my number 26.

Speaker 1

In one of the most brutal, angry, mean games ever made, but in such a delightful way.

Speaker 0

It is.

Speaker 0

I actually really like Barrage, and I think it's continuing to rise for me.

Speaker 0

It landed at 54 for me this year, so just off my top 50.

Speaker 0

I'm playing a game right now on Board Game Arena, but I've had a chance to play this in person a couple of times, one of my close friends' favorite games.

Speaker 0

And so I I just love it.

Speaker 0

But it's like you said, Adam, I think the only reason it's not higher for me because I think all the mechanisms are they're fascinating.

Speaker 0

They're so interesting, but it's so hard to get anything done.

Speaker 0

And it's so many rounds where I'm just like, get to the, God, I gotta pass and I don't I didn't do anything.

Speaker 0

Like, I'm not I didn't produce anything.

Speaker 0

I didn't create any points, and I'm not even set up for the next round.

Speaker 0

It just feels so painful.

Speaker 0

It's like, if this is one of those games where maybe if it was just like, just a tad bit looser, it'd be even more fun for me.

Speaker 0

But I do think it's a fascinating puzzle.

Speaker 0

When you can pull off a couple good rounds and get up to that 35 energy in a turn, that's pretty that's pretty exciting too.

Speaker 0

So I guess the feeling of accomplishment exists even more then.

Speaker 1

Well, at 26 on my list, I've got another new to me game, one that we alluded to earlier in this episode.

Speaker 1

That is Reforest designed by Sebastian Bernier Wong and published by Firestarter Games.

Speaker 1

I think I'd said in a previous episode when one of you guys brought it up that I think this game deserves a lot more attention than it gets, and and I think that's very true.

Speaker 1

This is a clever game that manages to pack a big game experience into a small deck of cards, very similar feels to other tableau building games, some bigger ones like wingspan is the one that's the most obvious, comparison, I think.

Speaker 1

In this one, though, instead of birds, you're talking about trees.

Speaker 1

And my favorite mechanism in this game is related to the interaction of trees.

Speaker 1

The way you play this is when you have a card with a tree, you can always play that card on top of another card in your mountain.

Speaker 1

You have a six card tableau.

Speaker 1

Basically, it's three cards at the bottom, two in the middle, one at the top that's supposed to replicate a basic version of a mountain.

Speaker 1

So you have a top, a, summit, you have a middle, and you have a bottom.

Speaker 1

But you can always play one card over another as long as the tree that you're playing on top is bigger.

Speaker 1

But there are some trees that actually like to have shade, and that will make those plants thrive and will leave them and their benefits and their effects in effect once you play another card over them.

Speaker 1

But even if you play a tree over a tree that doesn't like shade, that doesn't mean that the card that you're, you know, killing off is of no benefit to you.

Speaker 1

It then turns into essentially fertilizer.

Speaker 1

It's gonna get composted out, and it's gonna be usable as fuel to put more cards out later.

Speaker 1

So instead of playing a card out of your hand, you can play something that would be composted from another spot.

Speaker 1

And that was interesting and thematic and a really helpful clever little mechanism to have in this game.

Speaker 1

And that's that's my favorite individual mechanism in the game.

Speaker 1

But Reforest overall, it's it's still one that I I wanna get a copy of.

Speaker 1

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but a great game that, is a lot a lot of fun.

Speaker 0

So thematic.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Interestingly, you just mentioned a comparison to Wingspan.

Speaker 0

And just today, Stonemire Games announced, Pocket Wingspan.

Speaker 0

Or they didn't announce it.

Speaker 0

It's been announced for little while, but they just opened up preorders for it.

Speaker 0

And they had sent us a review copy of it, I've had a chance to play it.

Speaker 0

And I think it does a really cool thing about the same type of level of gameplay in that small little box that's almost just cards.

Speaker 0

I'm not sure it quite is elevated to the level of Reforest from that aspect, but it's pretty cool.

Speaker 0

I think my favorite version of Wingspan.

Speaker 0

So I'll talk more about that coming up soon, but cool to see these big games in small boxes.

Speaker 2

Yeah, Reforest is great.

Speaker 2

I'm on the lookout for this one.

Speaker 2

A little bit hard to find, Maybe not that hard to find.

Speaker 2

I haven't looked too hard for it, but I'm going to pick up a copy as soon as I can get my grubby little hands on one.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

My number 25, Pirates of Maracaibo, designed by Alexander Pfister, Ralph Binnardt, and Ryan Henriksen.

Speaker 0

And this is my favorite version of Maracaibo.

Speaker 0

Chris had mentioned Maracaibo a couple of weeks back.

Speaker 0

But I just love this great little Tableau builder.

Speaker 0

It's pretty simple.

Speaker 0

You move your boat.

Speaker 0

I think it's one to three spaces, and you take the action that's printed there.

Speaker 0

Some of them have costs.

Speaker 0

You can pick up cards and add them to a tableau.

Speaker 0

My favorite mechanism of Pirates of Maracaibo is that there's a lot of ways to basically upgrade your ship.

Speaker 0

So you start out everybody starts out with a little player board that it looks like a, you know, kind of an old pirate ship with a whole bunch of, like, cannon holes out of the side of it, and they all have little cubes in them.

Speaker 0

So each one of them has a different benefit.

Speaker 0

And as you get to trigger one of these upgrades, you take one off and you get the benefit.

Speaker 0

Sometimes it's an instant effect.

Speaker 0

Sometimes it's an ongoing effect you'll have from then on.

Speaker 0

But it's kind of clever how there's, I think, 18 of those spaces or something like that.

Speaker 0

But at the start of the game, the only ones you have available are, like, six of them.

Speaker 0

And so you might pick three of those.

Speaker 0

And then once you've gotten the third one off, now you've unlocked the next section of upgrades you can get on your ship.

Speaker 0

So even though they're preprinted, they don't change game to game.

Speaker 0

There's so much variety in what's there and reasons why you might trigger one benefit over another at any given point in the game that I find that everybody kind of pulls off different upgrades and builds up their little ship in a different way.

Speaker 0

Even though the tableaus are drastically asymmetric, even these upgrades tend to be asymmetric over the course of the game.

Speaker 0

But it's always a fun action when you get to do that.

Speaker 0

Pirates of Maracaibo still hits for me.

Speaker 0

I've started to do some of the variants of the game.

Speaker 0

I've played it enough now where there are variants where, like, island cards are facedown at the start of the game, and if nobody hits one of them in the first round, you put coins on it so they become more valuable to hit.

Speaker 0

But it creates some surprises when you go to these islands.

Speaker 0

You don't know exactly what you're going to get to trigger out of them.

Speaker 0

There's several other modules that are just in the base box.

Speaker 0

Then I guess there's a couple expansions at this point, but since I haven't even gotten through the base box modules, I haven't picked any of those up yet.

Speaker 0

But I love in Pirates of Maracaibo.

Speaker 0

I have a great time with this every time I play

Speaker 2

Yeah, Tim.

Speaker 2

You mentioned upgrading your your player board, your own personal pirate ship.

Speaker 2

That's gotta be my favorite part of Pirates of Maracaibo as well.

Speaker 2

That's pretty neat getting a super powerful ship as you're cruising around the islands here in, Pirates of Maracaibo.

Speaker 1

And I personally favor original Maracaibo over Pirates, but they're both great games.

Speaker 2

My number 25 game is Brian Boru: High King of Ireland.

Speaker 2

This was published back in 2021, designed by Pierre Sylvester, art by Diedre Dobara, that's by Osprey Games.

Speaker 2

This is a an area control game.

Speaker 2

It's so far removed from trick taking.

Speaker 2

I don't even wanna call it trick taking.

Speaker 2

It's sort of a card management game where you have, there's cards numbered one through 25, I think in this game, and you leave, I think one of them out every round, and you deal all those cards out.

Speaker 2

So almost all the cards are in there, and you're kinda keeping an eye on what's been played and what hasn't been played.

Speaker 2

And you're going through a series of round where everybody plays one card, and you're vying for a patch of land in Ireland each time.

Speaker 2

So whoever wins that trick gets that patch of land, but at the same time you're playing for all these little mini games around the side of the board too.

Speaker 2

You have the little wedding track, you have a viking monastery track, and then the area control portion of the game where you're just trying to have the most of your color token in these different counties of Ireland.

Speaker 2

So that's neat.

Speaker 2

I think my favorite aspect, my favorite mechanism of this game is the different little mini games around the side of the board.

Speaker 2

So even if you know you're not gonna win the trick and get that patch of land, maybe you're working yourself up to monastery track and you're gonna give one of the cities that you already have double value, or you're gonna go up the wedding track, get yourself some resources, or maybe you're going up that Viking track and that's gonna give you some advantage.

Speaker 2

You can sort of block somebody's city out of the rest of the game if you win that Viking track.

Speaker 2

So maybe Chris has a a double value city up in and then you can block that out and now you're in the lead and that's gonna get you seven points at the end of the game.

Speaker 2

So Brian Boru, it's a quick relatively quick playing pseudo trick taking area control mini game game that, I don't get to play enough, but it's my number 25 game of all time.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

A fun game and a great example of how they took a card game, a basic card game, which to someone of my taste is not that exciting and elevated it with an interesting board game as well where it had those mini games that you mentioned, Adam.

Speaker 1

I think this one's a lot of fun.

Speaker 1

And, Tim, having nothing to say on the subject, I will move on to my number.

Speaker 0

I you know, listen.

Speaker 0

I was taught that when you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Speaker 0

I'm not very good at following that advice, but once in

Speaker 2

a while, just broke that rule right now, Moving didn't

Speaker 1

on to greener pastures.

Speaker 0

Okay, I've got something nice to say about Brian Boru.

Speaker 0

Onboard Game Geek, it's ranked at number seven thirty seven right now, seven thirty two overall.

Speaker 0

And that's about where it is on my list as well.

Speaker 0

So Wow.

Speaker 0

Ouch.

Speaker 1

Alrighty then.

Speaker 1

So number 25 on my list is another new to me game.

Speaker 1

Now I know I said in previous episodes that I had a a moratorium on games I'd only played once.

Speaker 1

Well, I made a couple of exceptions for games that I truly did think were exceptional and where I felt very confident that on future plays that I would be just as excited to play the game, and that is the case with number 27.

Speaker 0

等等。

Wait.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

But, Chris, do you know what a moratorium is?

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

That isn't like a a kind of a general rule.

Speaker 0

It's actually like a hard stop.

Speaker 0

There's not an exception to a moratorium.

Speaker 0

So I think maybe that word doesn't mean what you think it means.

Speaker 1

Okay, mister Wizard.

Speaker 1

总之。

Anyway

Speaker 0

I'm just kidding.

Speaker 0

Go on.

Speaker 0

On.

Speaker 0

继续。

Go on.

Speaker 1

Anyway, back to the topic at hand instead of English lesson here.

Speaker 1

My number 25 is Civolution designed by Stefan Feld, a game that very much does not feel like a Stefan Feld game, and published by d print games.

Speaker 1

This, we talked about a little bit on our San DiegoCon episode.

Speaker 1

So much fun.

Speaker 1

You're you're rolling these dice and then using the dice in combinations in order to pick actions to take.

Speaker 1

The actions range from gathering food to moving your civilization to getting more people, to building buildings.

Speaker 1

I mean, there's a whole slew of things, and it's a really in-depth, very deep lived in feeling version of a civilization building game in a way that Tapestry, another game that I love, doesn't feel as much like a legitimate civilization building game.

Speaker 1

It feels like oh, it's a lot of fun, but it doesn't feel like you're really building a civilization.

Speaker 1

《Civolution》

Civolution really does.

Speaker 1

And that's kind of exciting and fun.

Speaker 1

And the mechanism that I like the best about it has to do with those actions because you have this huge grid of potential actions.

Speaker 1

You're dictated what actions you can take by what combinations of dice you can make, but there are, don't I I didn't count how many there are, but it's like this whole periodic table of different actions that you can take.

Speaker 1

And they all do something well, or maybe almost all do something kind of fun and interesting and enjoyable.

Speaker 1

So you can almost always find something, you know, entertaining to do with your dice.

Speaker 1

But having that huge menu of options to choose from is pretty doggone rewarding.

Speaker 1

That's Civolution number 25 on my list this year.

Speaker 0

Well, Chris, after I made fun of you for breaking your moratorium, this game is worth it.

Speaker 0

I can completely understand it now.

Speaker 0

So good job.

Speaker 0

好的。

All right.

Speaker 0

My number 24 is Bloodbath.

Speaker 0

This is a fairly new game designed by Donald XVac Reno of Dominion fame.

Speaker 0

Came out last year and was my number one game from last year.

Speaker 0

And it is continually fun for me.

Speaker 0

I've played it so many times, just played it a couple of times last week.

Speaker 0

Adam, you and I played it a couple of times back to back, didn't we, when we were together in person?

Speaker 2

Oh, We've been playing this one a bunch.

Speaker 0

Yeah, it's super quick to play.

Speaker 0

It's fun, creates exciting moments.

Speaker 0

I said on Blue Sky recently that the only thing you need to enjoy Bloodbath is a sense of humor.

Speaker 0

And then I played it with somebody last week that got so butt hurt that their city fell apart.

Speaker 0

And I mentioned that quote, he wasn't very happy about it.

Speaker 0

So I'll try to keep that to myself in the future.

Speaker 0

But I think this game is just a blast.

Speaker 0

My favorite part about it, my favorite mechanism, is the twists.

Speaker 0

So there's this basic deck that you start with every game, and then there's a standard fixed set of I figured they're called basically the negative things that are going to happen over the course of the game.

Speaker 0

Two get added in every round, every time the deck gets shuffled.

Speaker 0

But at the start of every game, you've got a stack of 40 of these twist cards that add two ongoing effects.

Speaker 0

And at the start of the game, you put two of them in the deck.

Speaker 0

So every game always has a little bit of a shift to it.

Speaker 0

Every game is a little bit different, what you're focusing, what could happen.

Speaker 0

There are generally positive effects or effects that you can work around easily.

Speaker 0

And so I just think that that was just a really smart choice.

Speaker 0

Even though the game generally has the same type of flow, the building deck is huge too, and that can always create different things, but I think those twists just are one more special thing that makes it a little bit little bit more fun every time when you got a new puzzle to work with.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Fun game, Moon Colony Bloodbath.

Speaker 2

As your colonies getting destroyed by robots or whatever that are taking over, you're trying to survive.

Speaker 2

A lot of times I just go into, oh shoot, how many colonists is this card worth that I can put in my tableau versus the cost of putting it in my tableau?

Speaker 2

So that's a little equation I start working out at the end, just trying to hang on for one or two turns longer than everybody else so you can have the the shoddiest but still surviving colony.

Speaker 2

Very fun game, Moon Colony Bloodbath.

Speaker 1

Yes, indeed.

Speaker 1

I I love the feeling of like just throwing away your people to pay your your human debt.

Speaker 1

It's so depressing, but fun.

Speaker 2

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 2

My number 24 game is Battle for Rokugan.

Speaker 2

This is designed by Molly Glover and Tom Jolley.

Speaker 2

And Tom Jolley has some great games on his CV.

Speaker 2

He's got Manhattan Project Energy Empire, which is fantastic.

Speaker 2

Cryo, I don't know if Cryo is a great great game, Tim doesn't like it.

Speaker 2

I wanna try it, but it's allegedly pretty good.
