Speaker 0

Hey there.

Speaker 0

Welcome to Board Game Hot Takes.

Speaker 0

My name is Tim.

Speaker 1

And this is Chris.

Speaker 2

This is Adam.

Speaker 0

And today, we're going to be answering a bunch of questions from our Patreon supporters and hopefully cover some fun topics here tonight.

Speaker 0

Lots of questions came in, and I tried to ask at least one question from each supporter that sent one.

Speaker 0

So if you sent multiple questions, we'll save them for the next time.

Speaker 0

But thank you all for the questions.

Speaker 0

We really appreciate it.

Speaker 0

I love doing these episodes.

Speaker 0

They're always fun.

Speaker 0

Let's jump right in.

Speaker 0

First question was from Chris Prime.

Speaker 0

What's your spirit game?

Speaker 0

The game that most resembles your personality?

Speaker 2

Well, me, I said Eclipse, Second Dawn for the Galaxy.

Speaker 2

First of all, it's got huge, huge muscles.

Speaker 2

So that was a no brainer right away.

Speaker 2

Hopefully, I guess that's not personality, but okay, whatever.

Speaker 2

Hopefully, you discover its strategic aka emotional complexity behind a polished, refined exterior.

Speaker 2

It gets a lot done in a relatively short amount of time, I e it cherishes efficiency in all forms.

Speaker 2

The game is probably not as smart as it thinks it is.

Speaker 2

What else did I put here?

Speaker 2

I put it's bad at spelling, but that's really just me.

Speaker 2

That's not the game at all.

Speaker 2

And it's never a waste of time.

Speaker 2

So Eclipse Second Dawn, that is my spirit game.

Speaker 2

Thanks for the fun question, Chris Prime.

Speaker 2

And, most of those were sort of attempts to humble brag, so apologies for that.

Speaker 1

I just want to say for the record that I knew you were gonna say Eclipse Second Dawn for this question, Adam.

Speaker 1

I I actually did think that I'm not just being I'm not just joking.

Speaker 1

I actually knew you were going say that.

Speaker 2

I love that game.

Speaker 0

Apparently, it fits your personality perfectly, Adam.

Speaker 0

All right.

Speaker 0

So I actually went with a game that I don't even like that much.

Speaker 0

But as I was trying to think through how I consider myself from a personality perspective, it just seemed like the only one that fit.

Speaker 0

So I went with Galactic Cruise.

Speaker 0

And there's a couple reasons for this.

Speaker 0

And that is because generally, I'm pretty dry.

Speaker 0

When I thought of myself first, I thought of myself as kind of just like, okay, I'm a dry Euro.

Speaker 0

Like, I'm consistent.

Speaker 0

I'm always on time, I'm responsible, and maybe a little bit I'm smart enough.

Speaker 0

So I thought a dry Euro.

Speaker 0

But then there's two things that Galactic Cruise did that I felt like most dry Euros don't that really do match my personality.

Speaker 0

One is that it does have a bit of a silly side to it.

Speaker 0

So even though I mostly come across as dry and professional and serious, you'll probably hear me laughing an awful lot on the show.

Speaker 0

So I thought Galactic Cruise does that.

Speaker 0

It's got a little bit of fun quirkiness in with its seriousness.

Speaker 0

The other thing is it looks great.

Speaker 0

So Palactic Cruise was my my my spirit game.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

I I that was nicely done, both of you.

Speaker 2

Interesting, Tim, you picked a game that you said you don't really even like.

Speaker 2

Does that mean there's some sort of little bit of self loathing there to your personality?

Speaker 2

Unpack that for me.

Speaker 0

I have to admit that there are definitely things about myself that I wish were different, and maybe that's true with Galactic Cruise as well.

Speaker 0

Maybe a little bit there, but that's not why didn't intentionally pick something that I didn't love.

Speaker 0

It did feel like the game itself was kind of what I was looking at when I thought about how I'm probably perceived by people.

Speaker 2

I wonder if this is a good, we've got get a psychological breakdown of any psychologist listening in the post analysis.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

Are there any psychologists in the house?

Speaker 1

Please, please comment How in

Speaker 0

about no further analysis?

Speaker 0

I'd appreciate that.

Speaker 1

Of the unconscious mind.

Speaker 1

好的。

All right.

Speaker 1

I did the same thing.

Speaker 1

I considered what I act not just what my favorite games are, but what I actually think reflects my personality, which I think is the spirit of this question.

Speaker 1

And the answer that I came up with was Cascadia because I have a tendency to be kind of quiet.

Speaker 1

I'm not super flashy.

Speaker 1

I kinda like keeping to myself.

Speaker 1

I don't like conflict, which is complete opposite apparently of Adam who's just like lives his personality is conflict.

Speaker 1

Eclipse Second Dawn.

Speaker 1

准确。

Accurate.

Speaker 1

I I like nature.

Speaker 1

So in reality, I think that you could name a whole category of games, these kind of quiet nature themed games.

Speaker 1

You could say Cascadia.

Speaker 1

You could say Wingspan.

Speaker 1

You could say Reforest, any of those, and I think they would all work.

Speaker 1

But maybe just because I also live in the Pacific Northwest and cherish my home location, I had to say Cascadia.

Speaker 2

That's a pick.

Speaker 2

I could see that, Chris.

Speaker 0

Love it, Chris.

Speaker 0

That's a great that's a great pick for you.

Speaker 0

Also beautiful, by the way, even though you wouldn't say it about yourself because you're humble.

Speaker 0

So the next question was from Scott Christly.

Speaker 0

And they said, Have you ever sold or traded a Game Away then later decided that you wanted it in your collection again?

Speaker 0

Now, you guys answer this, I do have an answer here, but I recently texted you and said I would love to do a whole episode on this, games that we regret getting rid of.

Speaker 0

So with that in mind, and with the hope that I will get to do that someday, I picked just one game that doesn't quite fit with that episode I wanted to do.

Speaker 0

So all I'm saying is that if you have multiples, maybe stick it to one so that we can create an episode on this because I really want to dig into this a little bit further at some point.

Speaker 2

Well, I'm gonna go conflict y.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna pick two just because Tim said to pick one.

Speaker 2

So my Fine.

Speaker 2

Well, one of them is kind of a cheat, and I'll explain why.

Speaker 2

The first one is Expanse, The Expanse of the board game.

Speaker 2

So I initially sold that, didn't think it was gonna ever get played and then I went back and rebought it and the expansion and I'm glad I have it.

Speaker 2

I hope we get that one played soon, that's The Expanse.

Speaker 2

And then Soul, Last Days of a Star, but this one was kind of a cheat.

Speaker 2

This is the one I was talking about.

Speaker 2

It was kind of a cheat.

Speaker 2

I sold it.

Speaker 2

It was out of print, extremely out of print.

Speaker 2

No word of it ever coming back on the market.

Speaker 2

So I sold it for more than I bought it for because I knew that there was a Kickstarter around the corner.

Speaker 2

So I waited, I don't know, another couple years before I backed it on the Kickstarter and got it.

Speaker 2

I made what, like 20 or $30 or something and now I have Soul again, a kind of a cleaned up version of it.

Speaker 2

So those are the two games, Expanse and Soul that I'm gonna talk about here.

Speaker 0

Well, this aligns perfectly, Adam, with the one that I put on my list because the only one I included on my list was one that I actually did reacquire again, which is what you did in your case as well.

Speaker 0

So hopefully you do have others that you regret selling so that we can still do an episode about that that you haven't acquired yet.

Speaker 0

Okay, so the one that I put on my list was Agricola.

Speaker 0

This is a game that I picked up as part of a collection early in my hobby, in my introduction to the hobby back in 2016 or 2017.

Speaker 0

I had played it once before and thought it was very interesting, but it felt very heavy to me at an early introduction.

Speaker 0

And although I kind of wanted to keep it at the time, I thought, Who am I going to play with this with?

Speaker 0

It was a fairly casual group I was gaming with at the time.

Speaker 0

So I sold it and kind of regretted it after that.

Speaker 0

And then got a chance to play it several times and was like, I love this game.

Speaker 0

It's one of my favorites.

Speaker 0

So I did finally acquire it back.

Speaker 0

So yes, I have sold or traded a game and later decided I want it in my collection again.

Speaker 0

I have another seven to 10 that I could list that I regret selling and probably will never acquire again, but regret moving on.

Speaker 0

Those I'll save for another episode.

Speaker 0

But Agricola is my one for today.

Speaker 2

Well, Tim, that's interesting.

Speaker 2

I know you're a huge caller, at least you have been trying to keep your collection down to 50.

Speaker 2

But now you're on the other end of that, I feel like you're saying, Hey, if this is a game that's one of my favorites, I'm going get it and keep it.

Speaker 2

Why not?

Speaker 2

So interesting to see your shift in acquiring games or your collection, I guess.

Speaker 0

Well, in all fairness, I've probably culled 200 games in my eight to ten years in this hobby, and I only have less than 100 in my whole collection.

Speaker 0

So it's not unexpected that I would have missed on a couple.

Speaker 0

And in some cases, my game tastes have changed a little bit, or in some cases, I sold them just because even if I really liked the game, didn't know who I was going to be playing with it, and now can see who I could be playing with it.

Speaker 0

And in some cases, just that they're very cool games and I just kind of wish I still had it to have it.

Speaker 0

So yeah, a little bit of a different shift in the way that I'm thinking about games in my own collection, I guess.

Speaker 0

Partly it's just like even a working clock is broken twice a day, right?

Speaker 0

No, that's not accurate at all.

Speaker 0

But bottom line is I don't have a perfect record for my culling decisions, guess.

Speaker 0

But you know, I don't feel too bad about it.

Speaker 1

Well, I guess I'm just in a judgy mood tonight.

Speaker 1

Because first of all, Adam, you know, just like Eclipse, Second Dawn, is completely willing to throw any you know, anything into the the gristmill for the sake of making a buck.

Speaker 1

You gotta you gotta have your dollars so that you can play another turn this round.

Speaker 1

That that's all I gotta say about that.

Speaker 2

I gotta make those extra $30 every couple years, man.

Speaker 2

值得。

Pays off.

Speaker 1

对。

That's right.

Speaker 1

That's what you gotta do.

Speaker 1

And for both of you, all of these games that you bought and then sold and then were sorry that come on, really all you're doing is just admitting to bad judgment.

Speaker 1

Mean, because don't get rid of a game.

Speaker 1

Don't just don't get rid of a game if you think you're gonna need it later on.

Speaker 1

So maybe I'm kind of tipping off that, What?

Speaker 1

You know, my I know what you're gonna say.

Speaker 0

Well, was gonna ask you, are you gonna give us an answer today?

Speaker 0

And it sounds like you're about to answer that for me.

Speaker 0

I thought you were gonna leave me hanging.

Speaker 1

No, man.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna answer it.

Speaker 1

No, the answer is no, which I unfortunately maybe dashes your hopes on that special episode, but I can certainly provide feedback if we do that one.

Speaker 1

But no, I every game that I've ever gotten rid of, I have been more than happy to get rid of and have never had a single second thought.

Speaker 1

Now having said that, one of the reasons that this may be true is that I just don't get rid of a lot of games.

Speaker 1

So I will admit that that is probably a big part of it.

Speaker 1

And the games that I have gotten rid of, I've been thrilled to be rid of, like Marvel United, Lords of Hellas.

Speaker 1

I wanna get rid of Lords of Ragnarok, and I guarantee you that I will never be able to, you know, I will never have a second thought about that one.

Speaker 1

So I just don't get rid of a lot of games.

Speaker 1

And when I do, I am confident in my decisions.

Speaker 0

Well, I suppose that makes it easier, Chris, if you're not getting rid of any.

Speaker 0

I think, we have a couple probable guests coming up here in the next few weeks, so maybe that would be a good episode to do with one of these guests.

Speaker 0

Maybe I'll throw that topic out, those folks, and see if there's any interest there.

Speaker 0

That way Chris doesn't have to be a part of it, or can sit on the sidelines and heckle us all if he wants to.

Speaker 1

Chris wants no part of this.

Speaker 0

All right, moving on.

Speaker 0

So super cool Magnus Maker.

Speaker 0

It's so fun to see these repeated names that are always being a part of our show because it's Patreon supporters.

Speaker 0

Almost everybody I'm going to read on here, you've probably heard them mentioned on the show before.

Speaker 0

So thank you to our Patreon supporters.

Speaker 0

And if you want to be mentioned on the show frequently and become a part of our very loved community, then you know what to do.

Speaker 0

Patreon.com/boardgamehottakes。

Patreon.com/boardgamehottakes.

Speaker 0

好的。

All right.

Speaker 0

Supercoolmagnusmaker said, what games are just dumb fun?

Speaker 0

No reason you should like it, but to you, it's always fun.

Speaker 0

For example, one of mine is Vengeance by Gordon Kaleja.

Speaker 0

I would never recommend it, but when I table it, I always have a great time.

Speaker 0

I'm not familiar with Vengeance by Gordon Kaleja.

Speaker 0

K k I'm not sure.

Speaker 2

Kaleja。

Kaleja.

Speaker 2

Kale Gordon Kaleja.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Anyway, regardless, I'm not familiar with this game, so now I gotta check it out.

Speaker 0

But what do you guys think?

Speaker 0

Any any just dumb fun games that you don't know why you love it, but it's just makes you happy.

Speaker 2

Or maybe it is Gordon Kalleja.

Speaker 2

I don't know, Tim.

Speaker 2

Good point.

Speaker 2

I had trouble answering.

Speaker 2

The closest I could come to this one was maybe Lords of Vegas.

Speaker 2

I think it's a good game.

Speaker 2

There's I do like it and it is always fun, but it is kinda just dumb fun too with that little gambling.

Speaker 2

Go to somebody's casino, you know you're probably gonna lose, but every once in while you win and it's a little game of property management and push your not really push your luck, but every time you flip these cards over, you might get a big rush of, yes, now I get a big payday.

Speaker 2

So it's silly, it's fun, you're trying to get big casinos along the Vegas Strip and make all the money and occasionally gamble it and double up your money at someone else's expense.

Speaker 2

So a lot of fun with Lords of Vegas.

Speaker 2

It's tough for me to the no reason you should like it, but to me, it's always fun.

Speaker 2

I had trouble with that part of it.

Speaker 2

So interested to hear your guys' answer.

Speaker 0

Lords of Vegas

Lords of Vegas is an interesting answer because I do remember the night that we played it, the my one play of it was the whole time I was going like, this is just this the funniest game I've ever played because my roles were so bad and it was just making me laugh.

Speaker 0

So I can totally see that.

Speaker 0

I went with a different dice game, Dungeon Fighter, which is basically a dungeon crawling game where the whole gist of it is that you're tossing dice and trying to hit targets.

Speaker 0

That's how you do damage in the game.

Speaker 0

And then you throw in all these silly silly obstacles that you have to toss around.

Speaker 0

It's just a silly game.

Speaker 0

And when I think about it, I'm like, man, I don't really feel like Dungeon Fighter.

Speaker 0

There's so many other games I'd rather play.

Speaker 0

But every time I played it, I've just been laughing my butt off the whole time, and it's just a it's a good time.

Speaker 0

So, yeah, I would say if you've never tried Dungeon Fighter and you want some silly fun in your cooperative gaming, Dungeon Fighter is the way to go.

Speaker 2

Dungeon Fighter is super silly fun, Tim.

Speaker 2

Great pick.

Speaker 2

Sometimes you're having to what?

Speaker 2

Like, bounce it in off your hip or use your knee to bounce this Dyson over some obstacle.

Speaker 2

You think there's no way that's ever gonna happen and then somebody makes the shot and everybody cheers around the table because you pass that dungeon and onto the next tyrant.

Speaker 1

Those are both great choices, guys.

Speaker 1

And I also had trouble kinda coming up with one that was dumb in the sense of I couldn't recommend it because I think even if a game is dumb, if it's fun, I'm gonna recommend it because I think it's a decent game.

Speaker 1

And the ones that I picked are ones that I I would recommend to somebody if you're interested in having a dumb sell, you know, funny, silly time.

Speaker 1

So I had a couple of them and, because, ah, just to make the point that I'm not breaking a rule here, the question was what games are just dumb fun?

Speaker 1

So I came up with more than one.

Speaker 1

One is Thunder Road Vendetta, which is just complete goofiness from beginning to end.

Speaker 1

You know, we've talked about that one a bunch.

Speaker 1

Dice chucking goodness.

Speaker 1

热手。

Hot streak.

Speaker 1

Hot streak is just a fun game to spin.

Speaker 1

In fact, I just this weekend, we played this game with, my wife and me, and I know it was bad grammar, my son and his girlfriend and the four of us had a lot of fun playing it.

Speaker 1

I think the the teens were a tiny, tiny, tiny bit eye rolly, but, you know, we're good sports about it.

Speaker 1

Sorry.

Speaker 1

Who doesn't like a game of sorry?

Speaker 1

You know, drop it on somebody's head and send them packing, you know, back to back to their little home spot.

Speaker 1

That's always a good time.

Speaker 1

And lastly, probably the closest that I'm gonna come to maybe the spirit of the real dumb fun here.

Speaker 1

It's taco versus burrito.

Speaker 1

It's like a silly card game where you're trying to, like, you know, get down to zero cards, but you're making a taco or a burrito.

Speaker 1

And the idea here is you're getting these disgusting ingredients like, you know, you're gonna have three day old sushi in your taco.

Speaker 1

And you can draw special action cards like the trash panda that lets you, you know, move things from here to there and just it's just an absolutely silly game.

Speaker 1

Still fun though.

Speaker 1

Dumb fun isn't always dumb, but hopefully it's at least always fun.

Speaker 2

Chris, those are some silly fun picks.

Speaker 2

What Taco versus Burrito reminds me of taco cat, which happens to be a palindrome.

Speaker 2

It's sort of this I don't know if you call it a trick taker or shedder or something.

Speaker 2

You're playing these cards and they all have these silly palindromes on them and you're trying to, you know, get the little marker style over to your side.

Speaker 2

And that one is also some silly fun, especially if you like crazy palindromes.

Speaker 1

Who doesn't like crazy palindromes?

Speaker 2

Alright.

Speaker 2

Come on.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Leanne said, are there any games currently lacking a digital implementation that you'd like to see the opportunity to play online?

Speaker 2

当然有几个,比如《Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy》。

There's a couple, of course, Eclipse Second Dawn for the Galaxy.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna keep going my Eclipse theme.

Speaker 2

Let's get that one everywhere.

Speaker 2

That would be fantastic to play online, I think.

Speaker 2

And then I also picked Speakeasy.

Speaker 2

That's another heavy thinky game I think would work well on like Board Game Arena.

Speaker 2

You have a lot of time to think through your turns, see what's gonna happen, see where the mobsters are gonna show up, plan for that.

Speaker 2

Any of these heavy games, I think lend themselves towards async play on Board Game Arena in the same vein as something like Gaia Project where you have some time to think out your turn, playing out your round.

Speaker 2

You're not you're not feeling the rush or the pressure necessarily of having this game at the table.

Speaker 2

Although even when either of these games are at the table, it's still fun just to see the massive production, the massive layout, and really enjoy the experience of playing these big old games.

Speaker 2

But those, I would love to see online because I just want to play them more all the time.

Speaker 0

Eclipse, we have of course played online on Tabletop Simulator, but who wants to be playing there?

Speaker 0

But it'd be really cool to see that on Board Game Arena.

Speaker 0

Speakeasy,

Speakeasy, I'm not so sure about.

Speaker 0

I feel like it's one of those games that would be too much scrolling back and forth and too much information to try consume.

Speaker 0

But I was worried about that.

Speaker 0

Civolution, I think it's in alpha right now on Board Game Arena, but it's out there and I'm in the middle of my first game of it and it's amazing.

Speaker 0

I'm so excited about it.

Speaker 0

I'm having such a great time when my turn comes up with it.

Speaker 0

So that one surprised me by how much it works even being on Board Game Arena.

Speaker 0

Mine is kind of similar though.

Speaker 0

我会选Voidfall。

My pick would be Voidfall.

Speaker 0

It's a game that I really like to play.

Speaker 0

I really want to play more, but it is such a hassle to set up, to teach, to put away that having it available on Board Game Arena would make me really happy.

Speaker 0

I still probably would hang on to it because it just seems like such a great work of art anyway, but, I'm not sure how much I'll ever get it played on Board Game Arena.

Speaker 0

It would be a great a great way to to get some experience with it.

Speaker 1

So, guys, those are really good choices, and those are actually my runners up in this one.

Speaker 1

In Speakeasy, actually, you've talked me out of a little bit.

Speaker 1

That was one of my backups.

Speaker 1

But now that you've talked about it a little bit, I wonder if it would lose a little bit in terms of its kind of cinematic storytelling nature when you're playing it online in an async way.

Speaker 1

So I still think I would love to see that one in an online implementation.

Speaker 1

I just wonder if it would lose, you know, something.

Speaker 1

Part of the magic of that game is the storytelling.

Speaker 1

I think you might you lose a little bit of that.

Speaker 1

But speaking of the storytelling, the game that I actually did pick was Dawn of Madness, which I've talked about before.

Speaker 1

It's a multiplayer co op or solo game, and it's incredibly complex to play on the table.

Speaker 1

I will say overly complex for those who didn't hear me talk about this one on one of our recent episodes, almost to the point of being destroying the game.

Speaker 1

It is so difficult to play and so complex for what ought to be a relatively simple exercise to get you to these story points that tell quite a compelling story that are really fun to read and are interesting, but the gameplay itself is not that great.

Speaker 1

So I've been torn on this one.

Speaker 1

I've actually had a lot of tension in my mind about do I go through the trouble of putting this game back on the table and playing it again with all of the work that that's gonna entail so I can get to those story points and so that I can read the stories of the different characters.

Speaker 1

And I've been incredibly torn because the story is so compelling in this game, or I should say stories because there's multiple stories.

Speaker 1

There's multiple characters each with multiple stories that they can play through.

Speaker 1

And I would love to see those.

Speaker 1

I would love to experience those in game form without just, you know, picking up the book, but I just cannot bring myself to sit down and play through hours and hours of this game again.

Speaker 1

Of course, an online version of this game would solve that problem because the computer would do all the upkeep.

Speaker 1

So even though I was not thrilled with the game itself, I love the story, and I would love to have the opportunity to get to that story through a much more streamlined interface.

Speaker 1

And if it was online, you know, you might actually find that.

Speaker 1

But because this is such a small niche game, I don't think we're ever actually gonna see an online implementation of it.

Speaker 0

Well, I don't know about DAWs, Chris, but that did make me think of Arkham Horror the Card Game, which is a game I really like, but I'm not really playing a lot of solo.

Speaker 0

I don't usually choose to play co op.

Speaker 0

If there was a nice app for that that I could play on my iPad while I'm on a flight, I I think I could really get into that.

Speaker 0

And that seems like similar thing with DAWs and Madness.

Speaker 0

You're there for the story.

Speaker 0

Who cares, you know, how the game actually goes?

Speaker 0

It's more just about, like, doing that exploration in there, and that seems like a great way to do it.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Next question is from Jesse Hill.

Speaker 0

They said, I love the episode about party games, and someone was mentioning giving away Flip seven.

Speaker 0

I've also gifted Flip seven, also HitSir, and Monopoly Deal.

Speaker 0

What are your most gifted games?

Speaker 2

I think for me, it's Skull.

Speaker 2

So after I've introduced this one to a few groups, you know, they've said, oh, I've got we gotta get that game and we happen to have an extra copy.

Speaker 2

I don't know if Sarah picked one up.

Speaker 2

She likes having some games around occasionally just for gifting exclusively.

Speaker 2

We had a copy or two of Skull around and she has gifted that one away a couple times.

Speaker 2

So for me, it's Skull.

Speaker 0

Well, me, it's, so I I was the one who mentioned giving away Flip seven.

Speaker 0

I think Chris might have as well.

Speaker 0

So I've given basically, what's happened is every time I played it with somebody and they've been like, I love that game, I want it.

Speaker 0

I'll just give them my copy and then I buy it again.

Speaker 0

And that's happened several times.

Speaker 0

《The Mind》

The same thing happened with the mind.

Speaker 0

I haven't pulled that out for a little while, but anytime I have played it, especially with casual gamers, they're shocked by how that game even works.

Speaker 0

To be honest, I still kind of am as well.

Speaker 0

People are loving it and they want to try something.

Speaker 0

I'm like, That's fine.

Speaker 0

I don't need it.

Speaker 0

And then next thing I know, I should probably get another copy of the mine.

Speaker 0

So I've done that a bunch of times.

Speaker 0

The one I've actually purchased to give to people though the most, I think is Azul.

Speaker 0

Just because it seems like a great game for somebody that's just kind of like, maybe we played a couple of games with it.

Speaker 0

They're like, Hey, gaming is fun.

Speaker 0

I like this.

Speaker 0

And then so I at least know there's interest.

Speaker 0

I'm not buying board games for people that I don't know are actually interested in playing board games.

Speaker 0

But for people that I know at least enjoy games, but aren't into really hobby games, Azul seems like a great game.

Speaker 0

It's easy to learn.

Speaker 0

They can play it kind of casually with friends and family.

Speaker 0

It can be almost in a party game type of style.

Speaker 0

And so that's been a, I think, a pretty good hit for people as well.

Speaker 1

We we seem to be hitting on the same cylinders this episode because Flip seven and Azul are also my most gifted games.

Speaker 1

But I do have a third that I'm gonna throw out there, which is maybe a bit of an oddball, but I think has been quite a success for me, and that is Sky Team.

Speaker 1

And the reason for that is it's a small game, easy to play co op, and the people that I generally find myself gifting games to other than just, you know, the straight family members who could use Flip seven or Azul or something that's not very thinky at all, I find people expressing an interest in cooperative games because it's a concept that nongamers generally are not that familiar with.

Speaker 1

And they like the idea of doing it's like a fun activity together, like it's usually couples that I've given Sky team to.

Speaker 1

And it just happens I have a fair number of pilots in my family.

Speaker 1

So so I've I've given that game a couple times to people who have expressed their, you know, sort of co op curiousness or who are pilots.

Speaker 1

And so that's been a a really good choice.

Speaker 1

And I've always gotten good feedback on it.

Speaker 1

Now I'm also gonna throw one other in there just because it's, not because it's one I've given multiple times, but because feel like I'm going out on a on a limb here, and I want the community's kind of good thoughts on this one that my sister and her husband who are not gamers, but they've expressed some curiosity about games.

Speaker 1

Like, I've had them ask for recommendations a couple of times.

Speaker 1

In fact, they were one of the couples that I gave Sky Team to.

Speaker 1

They're the ones who introduced me to Ticket to Ride.

Speaker 1

And so because we play board games a fair amount when I see them, when I come to visit and at camp in the summer and things like that, And they love Ticket to Ride, play it all the time.

Speaker 1

I was thinking of gifting them Ticket to Ride legacy.

Speaker 1

And so I'm I know that stepping out that's stepping out of line a little bit, you know, the gamer guy getting people a legacy game, but I think I might just do it.

Speaker 0

Well, Chris, I do wanna so so two things.

Speaker 0

One, I I actually had no idea you'd ever played Sky Team.

Speaker 0

What do you think about Sky Team?

Speaker 0

Do you do you enjoy it?

Speaker 0

I've never heard you mention it.

Speaker 1

是的。

I do.

Speaker 1

It's a fun game.

Speaker 1

It's a nice little diversion.

Speaker 1

It's a fun activity.

Speaker 1

I'm just not a big co op game person, but, you know, I've got a copy.

Speaker 1

I've played it.

Speaker 1

I've played it with my family.

Speaker 1

I've played it with friends, and I've always had a nice time with it.

Speaker 1

But it it's one I haven't talked about a bunch because it's just, you know, it's not my cup of tea as a co op.

Speaker 0

Interesting.

Speaker 0

I I really like it too.

Speaker 0

I I own a copy as well.

Speaker 0

It's one of those rare games where if I've got two players, it's one of my few two player only games that I think is a really fun experience even though it's co op.

Speaker 0

So that's that's cool.

Speaker 0

Didn't even know you you tried it.

Speaker 0

The other thought I had though, Chris, is that I did gift my parents Ticket to Ride Legacy because they love Ticket to Ride.

Speaker 0

And here's where I'm going to say you should probably hesitate a little bit.

Speaker 0

Ticket to Ride Legacy gets significantly heavier over the course of the game.

Speaker 0

It's a lot of new rules.

Speaker 0

It's a lot of learning.

Speaker 0

I think my parents never would have gotten through it if I wasn't there running the game for them.

Speaker 0

So unless they're really ready to get deep into gaming, I think it's probably a little bit over the top for someone that's just into Ticket to Ride and games of that weight.

Speaker 0

Because it's a lot of remembering new rules, learning new rules, a lot of reading story points, reading new rules that get revealed through the course of the campaign.

Speaker 0

所以 personally(就我个人而言),我不会推荐给休闲玩家。

So I wouldn't do that for a casual gamer personally.

Speaker 0

I think it's a great game for a hobby game group that's into Legacy and enjoys Ticket to Ride.

Speaker 1

Interesting.

Speaker 1

Well, thanks for the tip.

Speaker 1

I definitely will give that a second thought now based on what you said.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Next question was from Sam Oppenheim.

Speaker 0

What game was reimplemented wrong and the out of print original is just epically better?

Speaker 0

And they mentioned Battlestar Galactica and Biblios as their two thoughts on that, which I would kind of agree with.

Speaker 0

I mean, I don't hate the reimplementation of BSG, but it did work so well with that theme.

Speaker 0

And although Biblios as a theme isn't that interesting, the new version, just the artwork and the theme of that, makes me not want to play it.

Speaker 0

So I think Biblios is a better version there.

Speaker 0

What about you guys?

Speaker 0

Any reimplementations that you think failed?

Speaker 2

Yeah, I didn't have a good answer for this one.

Speaker 2

I was just going to echo the Battlestar Galactica reimplemented with a Cthulhu theme on that one.

Speaker 2

叫《Fathom》。

It's called Fathom.

Speaker 2

Is that what it is?

Speaker 0

Well, unfathomable.

Speaker 0

I can't even say it.

Speaker 0

Unfathomable.

Speaker 0

I still didn't say

Speaker 2

对。

it right.

Speaker 2

Unfathomable.

Speaker 0

You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 2

That's a tricky one.

Speaker 2

So I haven't tried the new one.

Speaker 2

I have played the old Battlestar Galacta and that does work pretty well if you're into a four to five hour long hidden role game.

Speaker 2

Yeah, don't have a good answer for this one.

Speaker 2

Sorry, Sam.

Speaker 2

What about you guys?

Speaker 0

The first thing that came to mind after Biblios, because I 100 agree with that, and that is Dwellings of Elder Veil was reimplemented as Andromeda's Edge.

Speaker 0

And I think the reason for this is because the original publisher went out of business or got acquired or something like that.

Speaker 0

And so the designer was working on an expansion.

Speaker 0

This is my kind of assumption and guess based on some things I'd read in the past, but I think he was working on an expansion for Dwellings.

Speaker 0

And then it kind of maybe it's still in print.

Speaker 0

I don't think it's even still in print, but basically lost publisher support.

Speaker 0

And so it was reimplemented as Andromeda's Edge, which is a sci fi themed version of this fantasy worker placement conflict game.

Speaker 0

And the only reason why I think this was a mistake, because I haven't played Andromeda's Edge yet, and I have seen how it's played.

Speaker 0

It seems very similar in a lot of ways.

Speaker 0

But the only reason I think it's a mistake is that Dwellings of Eldervale had some of the most amazing artwork and production of any game I've ever seen.

Speaker 0

And Andromeda's Edge just falls flat from my perspective on that front.

Speaker 0

Like, there's no art on the cards or factions.

Speaker 0

It's all just text.

Speaker 0

It just feels much more abstract.

Speaker 0

And so I just feel like they really missed the mark there.

Speaker 0

The theme is fine if it's sci fi, but they had to put that great flavor on it.

Speaker 0

Artwork and the style with it.

Speaker 0

And I think Dwellings was great, and Drowned in Edge kind of missed.

Speaker 0

So that was the only thing I could think of that kinda hit this, question.

Speaker 1

I still remember back when you were so excited about Dwellings of Elder Veil, and I'm I'm it makes me so sad that that one didn't pan out for you because I know how high you were on that game before it came in.

Speaker 1

So, anyway, my answer is actually, I'm gonna give you double answer because both the predecessor and the what's the one that comes after the follow-up, the reimplementation of this game were epic fails in my humble opinion.

Speaker 1

Now this is a not a cheat, but it's a little bit of a deviation because these aren't exactly straight reimplementations of one's game.

Speaker 1

These are variations on one game.

Speaker 1

But the game itself is Gaia Project.

Speaker 1

Terra Mystica, boring.

Speaker 1

Age of Innovation, boring and overly complicated.

Speaker 1

Actually, I'm I'm I'm being kind of provocative there.

Speaker 1

It's not really boring.

Speaker 1

Neither of those the other two are boring.

Speaker 1

I just don't like them that much.

Speaker 1

I just age of innovation and Terra Mystica were both kind of pale comparisons to Gaia Project, which is just such a a great solid, in in my view, pretty evergreen game.

Speaker 1

And the other two are just like, that's fine, but they just don't do it as well as Gaia Project did.

Speaker 1

And so there you go.

Speaker 1

Both the predecessor, Terra Mystica, and the successor, Age of Innovation, both fail in comparison to Gaia Project.

Speaker 2

Well, Chris, nice job finding the successor word there.

Speaker 2

You came up with it at the end.

Speaker 2

I that's a hard agree for me with Gaia Project and its predecessor and successor.

Speaker 2

So nice, nice thoughts there.

Speaker 2

This reminds me of a game that's getting a reimplementation soon.

Speaker 2

Forbidden stars is coming out.

Speaker 2

I think they're going the way of Cthulhu again, which is already disappointing.

Speaker 2

Maybe I have that wrong, but I'm pretty sure Forbidden Stars is coming out with a Cthulhu reimplementation.

Speaker 2

I'm gonna keep my eye on it.

Speaker 2

I'm a little worried though already.

Speaker 0

Well, I don't mind the Cthulhu theme, and I have been wanting to try Forbidden Stars.

Speaker 0

So hopefully it's a fun reimplementation.

Speaker 0

I'm happy to try it when it does.

Speaker 0

I wanna go back to Gaia Project for a second.

Speaker 0

Now you guys know this is, like, my favorite game.

Speaker 0

One of my I think it was my top three this year.

Speaker 0

Maybe my number three game.

Speaker 0

Maybe number two.

Speaker 0

It's one of my favorite games of all time.

Speaker 0

But I would even say that Gaia Project itself as a reimplementation failed only because of the artwork.

Speaker 0

Only because of, like, they put a great theme on it.

Speaker 0

It's a better game, I think, than Terra Mystica.

Speaker 0

I still love Terra Mystica.

Speaker 0

I don't even mind the theme.

Speaker 0

I don't mind anything about it.

Speaker 0

But I just think that with such an epic, awesome game, it could have been produced better.

Speaker 0

So what we really need is a reimplementation of Gaia Project, but with new production, new artwork on it.

Speaker 0

That'd be amazing.

Speaker 0

And then Age of Innovation, which I totally love, it's very close to me for Gaia Project.

Speaker 0

And I think they did exactly that to Terra Mystica.

Speaker 0

They put a better production, added some mechanisms to it that made it even more fun.

Speaker 0

So yes, there's an epic series there that there's still some misses that could be solved for at some point.

Speaker 2

Well, if Ian O'Toole or Kwanchai Moria are listening, let's get on top of, that next implementation of Gaia Project.

Speaker 1

Where's Awakened Realms when you need them?

Speaker 0

I don't trust Awakened Realms with anything.

Speaker 0

I've I've played their games.

Speaker 0

Alright, next question was from the Meanie Genie, and they said, What is a favorite happy moment you have from board gaming?

Speaker 0

First one that comes to mind.

Speaker 2

Well, this is going to sound cheesy and it touches on a question that we might get to later on.

Speaker 2

But meeting Tim, that led me to getting more into board games.

Speaker 2

It led me to meeting Chris.

Speaker 2

It led me to making this podcast and playing a lot more board games than I otherwise would have done.

Speaker 2

So that's gotta be up there.

Speaker 2

That's gotta be the number one.

Speaker 2

And then as a result of that, we were playing doing these game nights during COVID and I remember Chris one time before he moved away, which was which was a sad day in my life.

Speaker 2

He brought over we were doing like themed drinks for a couple of the game nights before COVID and Chris kept it going a little bit during COVID.

Speaker 2

He I think we played, I don't know if it was Dune Imperium or something.

Speaker 2

He made a delivery to my house of a special drink that he had made or a special beer he had picked up.

Speaker 2

One of them was like a spice beer or something like that.

Speaker 2

And I think he made a a drink he had concocted and it was in like a mason jar or something just delicious.

Speaker 2

And it was just a special event, special time.

Speaker 2

Chris made the effort Yeah.

Speaker 2

To come over, drop this off during the bleak days of COVID and make things a little extra special for me.

Speaker 2

So those are my favorite moments from board gaming.

Speaker 2

There's a bunch of others, but those are some of the top two.

Speaker 0

What a great memory, Adam.

Speaker 0

And thank you for reminding me about that.

Speaker 0

I do remember it as well, Chris texted and said, Hey, go check your front door.

Speaker 0

And there's two Mason jars full of some cocktail that he'd made.

Speaker 0

Amazing.

Speaker 0

I also remember you unfortunately brought back the memory that that night while we're playing together on Tabletop Simulator that I knocked over my Mason jar and

Speaker 2

spilled half

Speaker 0

of the cacti all over my keyboard and lost it.

Speaker 0

But still, that was so awesome of you, Chris.

Speaker 0

We were all trying to do things to just keep it together in those early days of COVID, and that gesture was such an awesome, awesome hit.

Speaker 0

And Adam, as far as us meeting, yeah, I think we'll be getting to that in a little bit here so people get to hear a little bit more about that.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So many fun memories for me, especially when we've gotten to do cons together.

Speaker 0

I have amazing game nights with my local friends.

Speaker 0

We have so many laughs all the time.

Speaker 0

But it just happened that there was a pretty fantastic moment this weekend that came up that made me laugh as soon as I read this question from the Meanie Genie.

Speaker 0

And that is that my family was all together and we went up to our place in Sedona and we're spending the weekend together and we played subjective.

Speaker 0

And we talked about subjective on our party game episode recently, but it was hilarious.

Speaker 0

The funniest part, maybe just the mood we were in or whatever, but the answer somebody was trying to guess was the Lion King.

Speaker 0

The category my mom picked was song.

Speaker 0

If you guys knew that it was the Lion King, what song would you name if you heard the Lion King?

Speaker 1

Can you feel the love tonight?

Speaker 2

Or Akuna Matata.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

I was going to go with Oh God, what's the name of it now?

Speaker 0

就是那个,他唱的那个《Circle of Life》。

One where he's Circle Circle of Life.

Speaker 0

我本来想说《Circle of Life》,对吧?

I was going go with Circle of Life, right?

Speaker 2

那正是

That's what

Speaker 0

I thought.

Speaker 0

But anyway, so my mom was on the wavelength with you, Chris, except instead of writing Hakuna Matata, she wrote Mamuna Makata.

Speaker 0

She totally forgot about it, but we were cracking up about how silly the answer was with it.

Speaker 0

Had a super fun night that night.

Speaker 0

That was the first thing that came to mind.

Speaker 0

I got to tell you guys that board games have created so many fun memories for me.

Speaker 0

Another one that hit was the first time we did our local con.

Speaker 0

And this was after we'd barely seen each other for two years, had only played on Tabletop Simulator.

Speaker 0

And we got together in Palm Springs for the first time, we're sitting at the game table.

Speaker 0

And somebody makes a joke about if this was actually Tabletop Simulator, and you see all three of us immediately put our hands over the table and start covering over the elements, the card, because that's what happens on Tabletop Simulator.

Speaker 0

As soon as somebody wants to look at a card, everybody is looking over it with their little on there.

Speaker 0

That that cracked me up so much, so it stuck with me.

Speaker 0

So many others, but I could spend all night on that.

Speaker 0

Maybe that's an episode at some point.

Speaker 0

Top five fun moments in board games.

Speaker 1

Oh, man.

Speaker 1

Those those are all great those are all great answers.

Speaker 1

I love those.

Speaker 1

Mine brings you back to May 2024 in our Big Bear Con.

Speaker 1

It was, I believe, Saturday night, and there it is getting pretty late in the evening.

Speaker 1

And Tim makes his pick Marrakesh, which was just an absolutely delightful game.

Speaker 1

We were all a few drinks in and feeling really happy right about then.

Speaker 1

And Adam goes, why don't we get some music?

Speaker 1

And so we got on some music.

Speaker 1

It was it was actually, Moroccan pop music that we were listening to as we're playing Marrakesh and having a great time in Big Bear sitting around our table playing this game, have having an awesome time.

Speaker 1

And actually one song that I added to my playlist after this that, has stayed with me forever is Rock El Kasbah by the a remake of Rock the Kasbah by Rashid Taha.

Speaker 1

So they, a great version of that song.

Speaker 1

Now the weird part of this story is that immediately after this, we had one of our strangest incidents at a, at a game weekend at a con when we we were in the middle of a game of Pan Am and Tim put the game away.

Speaker 2

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

在

In the

Speaker 2

游戏

middle of

Speaker 1

a game.

Speaker 1

So that was a great memory and a very weird memory.

Speaker 2

That's so fun.

Speaker 2

We were like, probably five minutes away from being done with Pan Am and Tim decides to pack it up.

Speaker 2

So we're still Chris calling it

Speaker 1

a weird

Speaker 2

memory, painful, painful memory.

Speaker 2

I had that victory too.

Speaker 0

I'm not even going to explain myself.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

行。

All right.

Speaker 0

Let's move on.

Speaker 0

Deep the Dodger said, Will the three of you return to BGG Con in November?

Speaker 0

Will the three of you ever return to a public con together?

Speaker 0

Or is it BGHT cons or bust?

Speaker 0

Two things.

Speaker 0

One, I happen to notice that DoopTheDodger just posted on our Discord today saying he was considering going to BGG Con for the first time and soloing it.

Speaker 0

I'm sure that's where this question comes from.

Speaker 0

But second thing, I think this is a session here that we're gonna uncover in public because I wanna know whether you guys are gonna be coming to any cons with me next year.

Speaker 0

I would really like to attend a couple.

Speaker 0

So what are your thoughts?

Speaker 0

Are we gonna get out to another con together?

Speaker 0

If so, let's get the planning started.

Speaker 0

And my second follow-up on that, I was kind of curious, if you were to do a con again, would you feel more comfortable or excited about doing BGG Con where you've already been, you kind of know it, you know what to experience is going to be, or would you prefer to do one that is completely fresh, something that's a totally different experience, different location?

Speaker 2

These are all great questions.

Speaker 2

If I have the time, and I think I do have the will to make it out to another Con, especially if you guys are there.

Speaker 2

That was pretty fun in Dallas.

Speaker 2

So one I've had my eye on, I've heard is very fun is the one in Ireland.

Speaker 2

I think it's called the AIRECon, the a I r e.

Speaker 2

I don't know if it's in Dublin or in

Speaker 0

the I always thought that was Aircon.

Speaker 2

Aircon。

Aircon.

Speaker 2

Aircon。

Aircon.

Speaker 2

That one sounds great to me.

Speaker 2

I heard it's a very, you know, play the games type of con and not too big.

Speaker 2

And Ireland's beautiful.

Speaker 2

So that's one I'd love to try out.

Speaker 2

So yeah, I think a BGHT listener con would be fun at some point if we could organize that somehow.

Speaker 2

But I yeah, I'm feeling a little bit antsy feeling like getting to another con might be in the works sometime pretty soon for me.

Speaker 0

Awesome.

Speaker 0

Well, Chris, I want you to jump in and answer first before I answer on this one.

Speaker 1

So here's the problem.

Speaker 1

I'm happy to do it.

Speaker 1

I thought it was fun, but the schedule is so busy.

Speaker 1

Even in retirement, it's crazy how busy the schedule is, especially having a a 14 year old, soon to be a 15 year old in high school with all the activities that entails.

Speaker 1

It is very difficult for me to get away for more trips than I already do.

Speaker 1

So what that means is it's probably pretty likely that if we were to do one, it would have to be on our normal con rotation.

Speaker 1

Unless we could find a time where there was one that fell just into a nice little sweet spot where I was able to make it outside of our normal rotation.

Speaker 1

And so we would just have to decide if we're willing to forego one of our regular BGHG cons for one of the more exotic ones, which I which I'm I'm okay to do.

Speaker 1

It's been long enough now since BGG con.

Speaker 1

So I'm happy to go out and, and do another one.

Speaker 1

BGG Con was a lot of fun.

Speaker 1

And especially if we did something exotic really exotic like what Adam was talking about, that sounds like it could be a real blast.

Speaker 0

So, you know, the really exotic makes that I think even harder for me because then I feel like my whole family would like to go to Ireland.

Speaker 0

But if I'm going to be in Ireland with my family, I'm not going to spend it four days, five days at a gaming convention.

Speaker 0

So even though that's exciting and sexy, I think that's less likely to be successful for me.

Speaker 0

On the other hand, I totally get what you guys are saying.

Speaker 0

Like if we have to sacrifice one of our BGH Tcons, which we did the year we went to BGG Con, that's kind of sad too, because they're such special times.

Speaker 0

They're such amazing fun times.

Speaker 0

So I am less interested in doing that than trying to fit one or two more weekends into my schedule personally.

Speaker 0

But at least I'm here and there's an appetite.

Speaker 0

So I'm going to try to work with you guys.

Speaker 0

We'll take a look at some of the cons that are coming up in this next year and we'll see if we can make it work.

Speaker 0

So there you go, Deepa Dodger.

Speaker 0

It sounds like we've got no commitment.

Speaker 0

We're definitely not going to be a BGG Con in November this year.

Speaker 0

And we are doing a BGHT Con in November, I'm not giving up on that.

Speaker 0

But maybe next year, we'll see how it goes.

Speaker 0

So we'll keep you all updated as we firm up any plans on that coming up soon.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

Matt Trimble

Matt Trimble said, How have you grown as a person through playing board games?

Speaker 0

For example, probably due to bad experience in sports as a kid, I usually have an aversion to competition.

Speaker 0

I've been surprised and happy that I've really learned to enjoy the competitive side of board gaming, even with strangers on BGA or at my local game night.

Speaker 2

Yeah, that's a good question.

Speaker 2

And to echo that theme that Matt asserted in his, in his question there, learning to lose with pleasure is kind of the short way to say it.

Speaker 2

In other words, I still get a thrill from the competition of the game and the people around the table, whether or not I win.

Speaker 2

And you have to sort of develop this because with a four player game, you know, even if you think you're super skilled and smart, even the luck of the cards or whatever might make it, so you're gonna lose majority of the time.

Speaker 2

So playing the game itself, trying to do, you know, solve that puzzle and enjoying the people around the table is just something I cherish every time I get together in person for a board game.

Speaker 2

So trying to capitalize on that experience, make it the most for not only myself, but the other people at the table.

Speaker 2

I think that's just a really fun time to try to enhance that experience.

Speaker 0

Well, would say the most recent thing that I feel like I've learned from playing board games is that it's humbled me in a way.

Speaker 0

And what I mean by that is I guess like things have always come pretty easily in life.

Speaker 0

I feel lucky, you know, I've been really fortunate in that front.

Speaker 0

School was always fairly easy in college and jobs and promotions and all of that stuff.

Speaker 0

And I used to be a great The Gathering player, and I used to be, I think, a pretty good winning rate with games with my friends and my family and stuff like that.

Speaker 0

And yet the gaming group that I play with most frequently, my Thursday night group, it's two other guys, and my record is just abysmal.

Speaker 0

And it's just opened my eyes to the fact that maybe I was a big fish in a small pond.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

It took me a little while to get over the fact that I just have a consistent losing rate there, and I'm okay with it.

Speaker 0

And it's like, that's okay.

Speaker 0

It's almost good.

Speaker 0

It's almost fun to be playing against people that are more skilled.

Speaker 0

It must be the situation right.

Speaker 0

And so it's almost fun to be playing against that versus with some groups or, you know, family members that I played with in the past where it felt like it was almost too easy, where it almost wasn't a challenge.

Speaker 0

And now it feels like every win that I do manage to pull off is a huge success.

Speaker 0

So I don't know.

Speaker 0

I guess I would say that's humility that I got out of it, but also just a different outlook on life from a place of extreme luck over the rest of my life to be losing at something consistently.

Speaker 0

Maybe it's good for me.

Speaker 1

The thing that board games have brought to me that have been, I think the most positive is an openness to strangers that I didn't have before.

Speaker 1

I'm a very deeply introverted person.

Speaker 1

I have some social anxiety and yet board games have given me this conduit to meet people that are new to me, that I don't know, that I'm not close friends with and do something that's both enjoyable and doesn't require me to sit down and have like an in-depth conversation with somebody sitting at the table if I don't know them.

Speaker 1

And this has happened a surprising number of times in my life.

Speaker 1

Like I'm not somebody who would normally have ever volunteered to go do an activity with people that I didn't really know.

Speaker 1

And yet since doing the podcast, which has also helped, it's helped having the podcast where I've become, you know, at least a little bit, you know, in this, our small community, a known entity, been invited to games, with friends of the show and listeners.

Speaker 1

And I've gone to them not knowing a soul and having a really great time.

Speaker 1

I was not too long ago on a local radio show here, where I met the folks in person and then played a game with them afterwards.

Speaker 1

That was terrific.

Speaker 1

You probably heard me mention it before.

Speaker 1

That was the Winners Bias, Board Game Radio Show on Kabu in Portland.

Speaker 1

Just a couple weeks ago, I played a game with, listener Tom and his wife and had a had a great time playing Kanban EV with them.

Speaker 1

They had heard that I had difficulty getting Kanban EV played and and reached out and said, hey, we got it and we like it if you wanna play.

Speaker 1

So that kind of thing has brought a dimension to my life that I did not have before and now I am incredibly grateful to have.

Speaker 1

So thank you Board Games for making me a slightly more social person.

Speaker 0

I think board games is such a fantastic social hobby for introverts because it's like you can sit there and hang out with people and be social with people without having to force that connection and find things to talk about and things like that.

Speaker 0

So I love it.

Speaker 0

I think fantastic.

Speaker 0

And also super fun for extroverts as well.

Speaker 0

It's just the best hobby for everybody.

Speaker 2

I agree, Tim.

Speaker 2

For the introverts out there, a lot of times these introverts are clever and witty and they keep it all in their brain, but the board games gives them that little opportunity for these quick little quips or one liars that give you these little flashes and chances to see their personality.

Speaker 2

And that, you know, when they get that response from the table, a big giggle or big laugh that lets them come out of their shell a little bit.

Speaker 2

And it's so fun to see that happen.

Speaker 2

I've seen that happen a few times and I love it when people start, know, coming out of their shells around people they haven't met before.

Speaker 2

It's always a fantastic time.

Speaker 0

Alright, Jason said, if you can only play okay.

Speaker 0

Well, I actually edited his question a little bit.

Speaker 0

So he asked for five games here, but that could be a whole episode.

Speaker 0

So I I slimmed it down a little bit.

Speaker 0

Jason said, if you could only play two games the rest of your life, which ones would you select and why?

Speaker 0

I think this is a fun exercise for so many reasons, and I love the thought process for which ones you'd choose and the reason behind them.

Speaker 0

Now, did an episode about a year ago or so, maybe two years ago, with Connie Vogelman about our top five desert Island games.

Speaker 0

And I feel like that kind of answers this question, but I left this one in here anyway for two reasons.

Speaker 0

One, because Chris didn't get a chance to answer at that time.

Speaker 0

Two, because our tastes change and thoughts may have changed.

Speaker 0

But two, I think if you slim it down to two games the rest of your life, then it changes the proposition a little bit.

Speaker 0

So fairly quickly, guys, two games.

Speaker 0

If you could only play two the rest of your life, what would be your two games?

Speaker 2

I was thinking that Connie Vogelman episode, Tim, and I forgot what I said on there, but here's what I'm gonna say now.

Speaker 2

I mentioned it already.

Speaker 2

This episode Eclipse, second Dawn for the Galaxy.

Speaker 2

You've got the six, I believe factions that come in the box.

Speaker 2

I've got the expansions which add four other factions.

Speaker 2

So the different player counts that you can have with that, the different factions you can play, how they interact with each other, just the variability of the game itself and the different ships you can build and how that's all gonna pan out.

Speaker 2

I think there's endless possibilities there.

Speaker 2

And then I also said Azul, of course.

Speaker 2

You can just open this one up, start playing almost immediately and you have this little strategic battle at two players.

Speaker 2

That's how I prefer to play it.

Speaker 2

And a little back and forth tug of war.

Speaker 2

You know, you're only gonna play this one the rest of your life, hopefully, you're playing with someone else that's just as into it as you are and you're gonna get that sort of, you know, sharpening of strategies and going, oh, what's what are they doing?

Speaker 2

I'm gonna try to counter this, where are they going?

Speaker 2

And just some neat things are gonna emerge from exploring Azul, think.

Speaker 2

So both those games are fantastic.

Speaker 2

I don't think I'd ever get sick of playing either one of them.

Speaker 0

I have kind of similar choices to you.

Speaker 0

My my number one is Dune Imperium.

Speaker 0

And of course, this was my number one game on my on my top 50 list this year, but I think even if it had been lower like it hasn't been has in previous years, for some reason, I feel like Dune Imperium is infinitely replayable and exciting.

Speaker 0

The the only problem with it is it's not great at two players, although you can play at two players, and I think I could live with My second one is Sea Salt and Paper.

Speaker 0

Simple little card game that for some reason I never get tired of, and it just fits the opposite end of that spectrum.

Speaker 0

You wanna play for two or three hours, heavier strategy game, Dude Imperium, I could play it forever.

Speaker 0

I wanted just a quick thirty minute game with two to four players, sea salt and paper.

Speaker 0

So those two, I feel like, although I'd miss a lot of other games, I would be pretty happy if those were the only two I ever got to play again.

Speaker 1

Well, I did something similar to what you guys did and different in a way.

Speaker 1

You guys had at least one slightly more complex example.

Speaker 1

Well, let me let me start with my actual choices.

Speaker 1

My choices were Star Realms and Azul.

Speaker 1

And the reason for those was because I thought of it as kind of a, you know, anything that's big and thematic and relatively heavy is eventually going to get tiresome for me.

Speaker 1

If all I'm playing is that game over and over and over and over again, it's bound to you know, the shine is gonna wear off of it.

Speaker 1

And Star Realms and Azul both have the benefit of being relatively simple from a rule set, but very complex in terms of their their replayability and their the the depth of strategy.

Speaker 1

Star Rims also has the benefit of having a nice little theme associated with it even if the theme is not, you know, super deeply reflected in the in the the gameplay.

Speaker 1

But now listening to you guys, especially, Tim, what you said about Dune Imperium, I actually wonder if that may be a little bit shortsighted because I think Dune Imperium is a is a great game that has a lot of replayability.

Speaker 1

And the funny thing is as I was thinking through this, I was even though the question didn't specify desert island games, I kind of thought of it as a desert island games.

Speaker 1

And for some reason, that made me think of two players.

Speaker 1

I mean, I guess maybe I could land on a desert island with multiple people and we could have a three player game or a four player game.

Speaker 1

So I don't know.

Speaker 1

Now now I'm rethinking my answers.

Speaker 0

But, Chris, what if you were the only person on the Desert Island and neither Azul or Star Realms has a solo mode, so then you're totally screwed?

Speaker 0

至少Dune Imperium有

At least dude Imperium's got

Speaker 1

me covered there.

Speaker 1

Facts, dude.

Speaker 1

确实。

Facts.

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

Jules

Jules said, what are your holy grail games to play and or to own?

Speaker 0

And what he says by Holy Grail Games, I think that the term is often Grail Games.

Speaker 0

So I think it's like a game that maybe you've never had a chance to or have always wanted to play it or own it.

Speaker 0

And so it's something you're searching out for.

Speaker 2

Typically, these are ones that are maybe out of print or hard to find at least though that's how I thought of them.

Speaker 2

So I had a couple here.

Speaker 2

I mentioned it earlier, Forbidden Stars.

Speaker 2

That's one I don't necessarily want to own it.

Speaker 2

I want to play it and see how that goes.

Speaker 2

I heard it's a big epic sort of four x c kind of game with a neat I don't if it's action selection or combat system with these poker chips where you're kinda stacking them up and then they reveal themselves from top to bottom.

Speaker 2

So the order is kinda finicky and how those work and how your how things get revealed during the course of the round.

Speaker 2

Sounds pretty interesting.

Speaker 2

And then Rise and Fall, this was a Kickstarter that I didn't jump in on.

Speaker 2

They were selling them, I believe, at the BGG Con we went to.

Speaker 2

Tim could have gotten a free copy, I think.

Speaker 0

No, there wasn't a free copy necessarily, but it was like one of the designers, I think, or someone associated with the company came up during our meetup and said, Hey, we'd love for you guys to stop by and come play it with us and check it out.

Speaker 0

I think they were doing demos of it or something like that.

Speaker 0

And I honestly regret not taking them up on it either, Adam.

Speaker 0

It wasn't in my mindset at the time, but it looks like a cool game to me as well.

Speaker 0

I wish I would have given it shot.

Speaker 2

Yeah, it sounds like a very interesting game where you're building up the terrain at the beginning of the game and then stuff evolves.

Speaker 2

It's very dynamic, it sounds like.

Speaker 2

One I've been interested in, but it's very hard to find.

Speaker 2

So those are my holy grail games for Binstars and Rise and Fall.

Speaker 0

I've had a chance to play almost anything I really wanted to try.

Speaker 0

One that I almost put on my list here, but I I don't know if I really even feel this way, but it's Kingdom Death Monster.

Speaker 0

Just because I don't know when I will ever get a chance to play it, but because it's on the Board Game Geek Top 100, and I'm sure it's not even a Tim game, right?

Speaker 0

But I think I could have fun exploring it for session or two, just so I learned the mechanisms and figured it out.

Speaker 0

So I would kind of like to play that, but that wasn't really what I put on my list.

Speaker 0

It's just something that if I ever get a chance, I'll be happy I did.

Speaker 2

Tim,

Tim, I heard there's some adult ish, very

Speaker 0

Like graphic artwork and stuff?

Speaker 2

That might be sort of a little too adult shelf material for your likings.

Speaker 1

Based on his reaction to the tarot cards?

Speaker 0

I don't.

Speaker 0

Maybe.

Speaker 0

I only know really what the first scenario is in it.

Speaker 0

And I you know, listen, I'm a big fan of the human body, so it's perfectly fine.

Speaker 0

But I don't I don't know what to expect there.

Speaker 0

All I know is that it's obviously a very popular, well loved game, so I should try it at some point.

Speaker 0

But here's my real answer, and it is a game I've played, but a game that I would like to own, and it's out of print, and that's Biblios.

Speaker 0

It's funny it came up on a different question earlier in this episode.

Speaker 0

There is a reprint of this.

Speaker 0

And when in fact, when I talked about this on an episode, I said, wish this was in print.

Speaker 0

The the designer reached out and said, it is.

Speaker 0

Is this new version?

Speaker 0

And I looked at the new version, I said, I'm never gonna own that game.

Speaker 0

It looks terrible.

Speaker 0

I think there's a new reimplementation.

Speaker 0

I feel like I heard there's a new reimplementation with a new theme coming out.

Speaker 0

So I'll watch for that, of course.

Speaker 0

But barring that, I just Biblios is this great little package.

Speaker 0

It comes in a box that looks like a like an old Bible, like a book.

Speaker 0

And then you open it up and it's this great little card game with dice.

Speaker 0

Nothing spectacular about the theme or the production, but it just works perfectly as a package and a game I would like to own because it's such a slick little little game that I could play indefinitely.

Speaker 0

So Biblios is my Grail game right now.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.
