Hey there.
Welcome to board game hot takes.
My name is Tim.
And this is Chris.
This is Adam.
And today, we're gonna be talking about the game we just finished playing, The Old King's Crown.
Now before we do that, I do often come to these episodes with some poll results to discuss.
I don't have that today, but I did have a really short topic I wanted to just mention to bring it attention to our listeners, but also just to get your guys' quick takes on it.
But I noticed today that Board Game Geek put up the 2026, the first day one inductee for the twenty twenty six Board Game Geek Hall of Fame.
So last year, they started this Board Game Geek Hall of Fame where they're basically trying to highlight classic games, games that really have stood the test of time in the hobby.
And last year, they named 25 games, and they did it over, I think, one per day over twenty five days.
So it's kind of a fun thing to watch and see what the next days was.
But a lot of them were pretty predictable to me last year, and, you we can mention a couple of them on here.
But, you know, they were kind of the classic Euro style games and and and just the things that you know old timers are, like, into in the hobby.
So this year this year's Anyone in particular
that you're talking about today?
Get to that.
Well, yeah, well, might as well mention them right now.
So one of our friends, Mark Johnson, who runs the board games to go podcast, the longest running board game podcast, he he was on the committee that picked the selections last year, the selection committee last year.
And then he just told us this afternoon that he is on the committee this year as well.
So, he's one of the old timers that is picking the games, and he certainly is that.
But, in any case, I I was a little more excited this year because the first the first game that they showed up, the the day one game this year is for sale, which is a kind of a classic game.
It's very light game, but excellent little bidding game.
And to me, it just feels like it's bringing a little bit more fun and excitement than the the, you know, list of of the 25 last year.
So I hope to see more of that.
I hope to see some more fresh little surprises in here that aren't just the, you know, kind of expected games to show up on this list.
Have you did you guys follow this at all last year?
Have you have you been paying attention to the hall of fame?
I I mean, I saw the list from last year, and I saw the one the first game that got posted this year for sale.
And in fact, when I saw that, I was I vaguely recall one of you, I think maybe you, Tim, had mentioned this game at one point.
是的。
Yep.
对。
Yeah.
So Yeah.
It's a good it's a good game.
Great game.
I love it.
I'm one I am not familiar with.
So it'll maybe this will be a year full of games that I I don't know.
Last years, I were pretty much like you said.
They were all ones that I would have predicted would've been on a list like this for sale, not so much.
是的。
Yeah.
Tim, this is one I remember you always bring up, and it's one I always wanna try for sale.
It sounds cool and quick and has something like what you started a shack and you build yourself up to a mansion or that's kind of.
No, not exactly.
Basically, it's a double, it's a two, like a two way auction.
I wanna say it's in some ways similar to Biblios, which I know you played recently, Adam.
But basically, at first, like based on the number of players, you're just dealing out these property cards and they're labeled one through 30, but like a one is an outhouse and a 30 is like a space station, right?
So they're just cute art that goes along with the size of them.
Everyone starts with, I think 13 poker chips, like 13 you can spend.
And this is a this is an open auction to start with.
So everybody's gonna the first person is gonna be like, I bid three.
And then the next person is gonna be like, I bid 4.
And then the next person like, I pass.
So they get the lowest number card that's out there.
Let's say that there was a two, a seven, a 10, if it was a three player game.
So they'd get the two.
And then the other two people can keep bidding back and forth for the seven and the 10.
And whoever ends up passing gets half their money back.
So once you've put money in there, you're gonna lose some of it, but you can get out and lose, you know, not all of it.
But but the reason why you're bidding on these things is that you're you're gonna end up spending most of your money.
Any leftover will count as points towards the end.
But in the second round of the phase of the game, you're gonna have this handful of property cards.
And then the cards that are gonna be laid out in front of you are instead dollars that are gonna range from zero to 15, a different deck of cards, right?
So let's say a two, eleven and a 13 comes up.
So now everybody's gonna blind place one of their properties down and then everyone reveals at the same time and whoever has the highest number property is gonna get the highest dollar value and then so on from down there.
So let's say that there's a two at 11 or 15 up there.
I might turn over my one, my 30, my most popular, my best card and I'll get that 15, but now I've kind of blown my wad.
And so in another hand where there's like a zero, one and a 15 and somebody else can take that 15, I'm gonna be stuck with the one.
So you gotta be kind of strategic about how you spend the high property values, but you're basically buying and selling properties in this game.
It goes really quick, plays like in in ten minutes or something, but a very clever game that plays it very you know, I think it goes up to six at least.
I played it at six.
So, you know, nice player count range on it and just a fun little filler game.
But like I said, a little bit of a surprise for me to show up in this in this hall of fame already.
So looking forward to seeing what else comes up for me.
是的。
Yeah.
And any game that can work in a space station and an outhouse is aces in my book, baby.
对。
Yeah.
This game sounds still delightful.
I wanna, check out that outhouse and, see where things go from there.
好的。
Alright.
Well, we'll we'll keep an eye on this and maybe we'll chat about a little bit more before the end of month.
好的。
Alright.
Well, let's jump into the game we just finished playing, which is The Old King's Crown, and Chris is gonna kick us off with a description of the game.
The king is dead.
Long live the king.
I mean, long live, whichever of the one to four players playing the old king's crown manages to prove their faction the most worthy by scoring the most victory points?
Huzzah.
In the old king's crown, those one to four players with asymmetric factions are gonna be duking it out over four to six rounds, each representing a year, to prove who's gonna make the best new king or queen.
This game is very sequential.
In other words, each year is broken down into four seasons, each of which plays out chronologically.
And in each season, there are a series of steps players will carry out, again all in sequential chronological order.
Each year starts with the Spring, which is largely about acquiring new Kingdom cards, which provide valuable actions and abilities for Players' Factions.
Players will also stake out territory to deploy their Heralds and Supporters to prepare for Clashes, which are going to occur later on in the year.
In the old king's crown, summer is not the season of love.
It is the season of fighting.
All those supporters that were deployed in the spring now spring into action in a series of battles.
Once the battles are complete, the winners will take their spoils and head into Autumn to lick their wounds.
Now after all of that fighting, it's time to rest and relax.
By which I mean govern and journey.
During governance, players are going to play cards that will allow them to vote, which gives them access to special actions and benefits.
And when journeying, players will earn lore points that will allow them to purchase faction specific cards that are going to strengthen their deck.
There are also a variety of other autumn actions they can take.
Finally, in winter when all the governing and journeying is done, players will do their upkeep, get ready for spring, and then the whole thing is going to start all over again.
After four to six years, depending on which game length the players decide to undertake, victory points will be tallied and the player with the most points will be the winner.
Now let me be really clear that this is the 30,000 foot view.
Actually, let me take that back.
This is more like the 350,000 foot view.
There is a lot of detail in this game and there's a lot of things you gotta know, but this is just the bare minimum just to get us started in the conversation.
The Old King's Crown was designed by Pablo Clark and is published by Eerie Idol Games.
Thanks for that rules description, Chris.
This was the first play for all three of us.
We played together on tabletop simulator tonight.
Let's jump in with the gameplay and mechanisms of The Old King's Crown.
So I went into a little bit of detail, but really, really little detail in the game's description.
But one kind of overarching thing that I'll mention, because it is a repeating theme in this game, is that a lot of this is all about bidding and it's all about the cards in your hand.
So everybody starts with this deck of cards that's nearly identical.
They look a little bit different and actually in a very pleasant way, but they're all the same cards, all the same powers.
And you'll see these same actions repeated over and over again.
And each of these cards had a number, which is the power of that card.
And at multiple steps along the way throughout the course of a year, you're gonna have to use those cards essentially to bid.
Now in the spring, the bidding means getting these kingdom cards which are places you can put on your player board and you can use to to get extra powers, extra abilities, and the person who has the highest bid gets to pick from the market first.
Other players can bid higher and choose first, or they can bid higher and choose to take over somebody else's card if their, if the card that they played is higher than a card that another player has played.
So it's this kind of odd combination of overpowering slash battle slash bidding.
Similarly, when you get to summer and you're playing the clash part of the game, it essentially works the same way.
You're bidding on the combat.
So you're gonna place cards in each of the zones in a way that's somewhat similar to Wonderland's War, where you place your power throughout these different zones of combat and then they sequentially go from one combat to the next combat to the next combat.
Each one plays out and the winner is generally going to be determined by whoever put down the highest number of cards.
And it really is kind of like a bid because you're not there's not a lot of maneuvering that happens generally during the combats.
It can happen and it does happen.
So don't don't take me don't misunderstand me to say that there's nothing that happens in there other than just playing a a numbered card.
But that is largely what you're doing and that's largely how the combat ends up working out.
So really this game is kind of like a series of bids that you're that you're undertaking by playing these numbered cards at different powers.
是的。
Yeah.
So a couple things there, Chris.
You're talking about the first kind of couple phases of the game.
That first phase where you're getting these different, kingdom cards they're called, you're sort of building up your your tableau, your player board, your pow your ongoing powers that you're gonna have or some powers you may be able to use later on in the round.
And then the the tricky thing there was you could also steal somebody else's kingdom card if you had a a card that was powerful enough to do that.
So what it remind reminded me of, like, echoes of time a little bit, you can sort of take over somebody else's little region.
Still, they're something from their tableau or their their ongoing power, so it was kinda nifty.
And then you were talking about the summer phase, the combat phase, which was three different regions.
Each region had two different lands, And that part reminded me a lot of sort of the combat in Blood Rage.
You have these cards.
You're trying to do tricky stuff.
You're trying to, you know, be sneaky about it.
Oh, I have this card here that's gonna let me shift this card later on up to this region.
And it matters the order that those battles resolve in.
So the last person to go in player order gets to pick the order that those battles resolve one, two, and three, which can have implications if your cards let you, you know, adjust to the order of combat or do something sneaky in the first battle that's gonna affect how the third battle plays out.
So if you like that kind of I don't know.
It felt a lot like blood rage, liberty Tim and I were talking about Libertalia a lot.
《Blood Rage》
The Blood Rage combat sneaky card play sort of system, but we all have the same kind of cards to start out with.
That's how that sort of combat portion of the game felt to me.
First, I wanna apologize because I'm gonna completely miss on all the terminology used because I couldn't seem to wrap my head around it.
It tries to be very thematic with the terminology they're using.
Like you're playing kingdom cards or you're I don't know.
I would what it when you're going into combat, forget what it is.
You're like in a council or something like that.
But basically, there's they're trying to use this like, you know, old dark ages terminology throughout this game that just I don't know.
It threw me it threw me for a loop.
I'm gonna miss some of it right now.
I think I wanna start with with the asymmetry that this game brings because one, it it's one of my favorite parts of the game where those kingdom cards that you could bid on at the beginning of the round.
Because every round there's four available to bid on and they're drastically different.
And that's one of the ways you built up your asymmetry in the game.
The the kinda cool thing about it is that they could rotate.
People could steal them from you, but you also could ultimately get, like, you only have spaces for two on your board.
So you're not gonna have, like, a ton that you have to keep track of, but you're gonna have one or two powers fairly quickly in the game that are gonna be different.
And there were some fun ones that would pop up later and you could mix and match them and kinda combo things together.
So I thought that was really cool.
It was fun to see how each of us developed and played with those and took advantage of them.
Beyond that, each of the player boards have some asymmetric.
I think they were mostly one time effects or limited use effects.
Like you'd use them one time and you flip them over at a certain phase.
And those had huge game breaking effects, but they're only used once per game.
So those were pretty cool.
They resulted in some big moments in the game, but they're all out on the table.
Everybody knows that you can do them.
And so that was kind of cool.
I I would assume it wouldn't be quite as fun in future plays because we already have experienced them, meaning like, well, maybe it depends on who you are, I suppose.
For me, it'd be less fun because I wouldn't have the surprise of them because I you know, you get used to using them.
They'd probably be a little more stressful because you're sitting there the whole time thinking like, oh, crap.
Adam's got that thing, and he's gonna take advantage of it right now.
I gotta play around it.
So those were kinda neat.
But other than that, I think that one of the letdowns for me in the game was that, yeah, you all had cards, numbered cards that you're playing in these combats, which could have or should have been the probably most interesting.
I mean, it's kind of the core of the game.
Right?
That's mainly what you're that's how you're getting points in the game.
But the the cards themselves were almost all symmetric.
We all had the decks.
I think there was, I don't know what 12 cards in your starter deck or 15 or something like that.
So we all had, you're gonna have some different cards in your hand, but they didn't do drastically different things.
There was like five icons that could show up on these cards.
Almost none of them had like any special text on the cards that were something else.
And I think the decks were all pretty symmetric as far as the same types of cards with maybe slight variations.
Maybe one of them has a couple different icons than another one, but they weren't very different.
And then you had the opportunity to buy cards.
Everyone had three additional cards they could buy, but at least as far as I could tell, they are all very similar as well with very minor differences to them.
So that was, I think just a little bit of a letdown as far as the card play that you weren't gonna see a lot of variety once you've played this game once or twice.
It's like, there's the one cards number one through 11 basically.
And they're all gonna kind of do the same thing.
You might see flanking.
You might see somebody that can't get blown up by another card or destroyed in a night phase.
But other than that, you know, they're all kinda doing the same thing.
So a little little, you know, less fun of that part of it.
But otherwise, you know, kind of interesting.
There was some decent asymmetry here.
But I did I did really like the kingdom cards and the opportunity to purchase those.
And those you're gonna see different every game, I think.
That's that's where the more interesting variety is gonna come in here.
是的。
Yeah.
Those kingdom cards, I think we ended up battling over the same couple of kingdom cards all game.
And I made the huge tactical error of fighting to the death over a kingdom card twice.
I did this twice and got the kingdom card and have myself in a situation where I couldn't even use the kingdom card.
So, oops.
But I thought the asymmetry in this game was both a blessing and a curse because on the one hand, Tim, like you said, it seemed like even with the asymmetry built into the cards, it wasn't really that asymmetric.
So the base decks are actually symmetrical.
Those are the same.
But even the extra cards that you can buy, even though this seemed like a place where you put in some real interesting asymmetry, these deluxe cards that you have to spend, I think lore points is what they call them.
You go on journeys.
I guess you come back and you get these like stories that you can tell from your journeys and you use those points to buy these lore cards, excuse me, you use the lore points to buy the upgraded cards.
They were actually pretty similar too.
In fact, they were different in minor ways.
Like for example, each of us had an 11 card that had a power that let you take over someone else's kingdom card and treat their defenses as zero.
Now for mine, it was a character.
I think for Tim or Adam, it was a a weapon, which significance of that we'll probably talk about later.
So there were some differences, but they all kind of did the same thing.
And I thought that was a great opportunity where they could have created more asymmetry by doing something really different instead of just putting minor differences on what were otherwise very similar cards.
And then in terms of those special faction abilities, the one time ones that you were talking about, Tim, those I had some really mixed feelings about because those were truly asymmetrical and they were these game breaking one time actions.
I'm pretty deeply frustrated about the ones that in the way they were used in this game because Adam used them to like crush the two of us.
And I used mine, I think, to stymie your plans, Tim, at one point.
And even though I didn't realize I was doing it.
And I think the problem with these, the way that these were used is that because they were these game breaking one time actions, you never knew when they were gonna come out.
Even if you didn't know all the actions that everybody had available to them, you would you wouldn't know when they were gonna come out.
And so it leaves you in this really tough position of being like, well, do I not set myself up for the win because this person might use that card and then I then I'm free to do it in the future?
Or I mean, that created so much uncertainty in the game that it was it felt disorienting to me.
I don't generally like to make positive comparisons with Peterson games, but this reminded me a little bit of the asymmetric faction abilities in Cthulhu Wars, which notwithstanding it's a Peterson game, it's still, I think quite a good game.
But in those, once a power comes into play, it kind of becomes known by everybody.
Like, Chris's guys are able to fly anywhere all over the world.
Adam's guys can pop up and double their power if they're fighting blah blah blah.
And so they're ongoing and so you you have to become aware of what other people are doing and what powers they have because they generally tend to be ongoing abilities.
This is like someone's got a nuke that they can use one time.
Are they gonna use it when I've got a card in exactly the right place?
You know, it's I found that a little bit frustrating.
I did not like that way of handling those asymmetric powers.
是的。
Yeah.
I kinda wanna look at the they're called the tactic tiles.
The that's a lot of teaser.
Tactic tiles.
Anyway, these are the asymmetric tiles once per game, and I thought you for me, I tried to purposely look at them and then plan around them.
I was able to buy one of my cards that let me use let me get an extra kingdom card, and then so I had three at one point, and one of my tactic tiles let me force Chris and Tim to discard the number of cards that I had kingdom card locations.
So they each had to discard three, which kinda shut them out of any additional cards for the combat.
So I was building around these, but my powers felt amazingly powerful, maybe too powerful.
I wasn't looking at yours.
I'd like to see if yours could have been used to as good as an effect as I used mine too because that seemed to work out really well and just kind of it destroyed you guys a couple times.
I think I was able to just hammer you guys and I felt bad about it.
I was like, gosh, I I took them out of this whole entire round.
I don't necessarily feel good about them.
I'm gonna get a bunch of points and stuff, but yikes, that seems too good.
So if you guys were gonna play this one again, would you be able to fine tune your strategy to use those tactic tiles as brutally as I use nine?
I'm sure that you just played better than we did, Adam.
I doubt there's like any kind of heavy, you know, like OP powers that you had going on there.
Like Chris said, sometimes it was just frustrating because like the one time you're setting yourself up for like the big round with your whatever it's called your your cleric or whatever is going.
See, I know I was gonna forget all these terms.
Your herald,
thank you out to a specific region and you threw all your supporters there.
And then that's the time that somebody messes with you.
And I don't know that they were particularly overpowered.
Think that you know, Chris Chris and I just had some sour grapes because you kinda beat us pretty badly this game.
I thought I thought that I actually had some fun powers to work with.
But one one of the things we did play here is this game has, like three lengths of game you can play.
You can play a four round game, five round, which is what they recommend is like the basic game and then a six round game.
And we we just for in the interest of time, and I guess maybe just a little bit of what we'll get to that in our final thoughts, but for other reasons we picked four rounds and settled in on that's what we were gonna end with.
And and I think that the game is clearly set up for five or six rounds because then those tactic tiles wouldn't have been quite as impactful since you have to spread them out over more rounds and you have the opportunity to kinda like set yourself up for big plays over multiple times.
So I I do suspect that the game is best played at, five rounds if you wanna sit through it that long.
It does go a little little long for what you're doing in this game, but, you know, that that would probably have made it feel a little bit better.
There's been some interesting comparisons to other games here, and I agree with, you know, Adam's comparison to Libertalia, which is basically what this game is.
Everybody's revealing cards at the same time and whoever has the highest power gets the best rewards.
But I've actually got another comparison and that is Dune Imperium.
And the combat in this felt in a lot of ways similar to me to Dune Imperium.
And that it was, you kind of knew what was out there on the table.
There was some information revealed.
You could put supporters out in a region.
You kind of knew which regions people were targeting.
But and so the combats were like a little bit like you had some information going into it.
And then the cards revealed, hey, if I get a 10, I'm, you know, I'm gonna have the highest power card here.
But then there was those couple little tricks that would throw you off, which felt like the intrigue cards in Dune Imperium.
So in some ways, it did remind me of that as well.
That's an interesting comparison, which I completely disagree with.
I feel like the the differences, the things that you can do to mess with somebody in in Dune Imperium do not feel as impactful as they did in this game.
Because for one, you can go in at the beginning of a combat and like Adam did, which basically the move that Adam played was there was a combat.
It was the last combat of the game.
He and I were really duking it out for this one spot.
The winner of that one because we had placed our heralds in the same location meant that someone was gonna take points away from somebody else.
And he had a big weapon that was there, and I had a card that I could play that doubled the power of all my supporters.
And I put in my highest numbered card, and I basically could have guaranteed myself the win.
But he had a card that let him look at all of the different, cards in a zone.
So he was able to see what I had played there.
And he had another one that allowed him to move two cards of another player between two zones.
And so he swapped out a weak card of mine for a strong card of mine.
And so that was, you know, that that really changed things.
You can't do anything like that in doing Empyrean.
That is that is an that is totally totally of a different nature.
I do wanna mention, and that's one of the things I know felt really frustrating, but remember that the reason he was able to look at the cards and kinda set himself up was because he had that kingdom favor token for like three turns in a row, which we could have taken from him in previous combats and none of us attempted to.
And so that's kind of cool too, that we all had our own little game breaking ability if you manage to control this one little token that you could steal based on a combat reward.
So honestly, like we should have known better.
We should have like made sure to take that away from Adam in the next round so he couldn't prep because that that's what really allowed him to ruin us in the final round was the ability to have some advanced information to do that.
And Fair enough.
And I think, dude, Imperium sets you sets you up like that.
Like, there are some combat abilities.
Like, we we're actually the three of us are playing a game with Duke the Dodger on the iPad app right now.
And we're playing with the Rise of X expansion.
And I thought that I was set up in this and then he buys in his last agent round, he buys one of the tech tiles that is gonna give him four swords because he's got his seat on the council or whatever.
And so that's like an ongoing ability that he now has that I will probably never be able to beat him with.
So it kinda feels like that.
And then depending on what he reveals on his real turn, that could totally change things or what I reveal.
Right?
I don't, like, dupe the dodger won't know until after we're well past this combat that that I can't beat him right now.
But the point being that I think that Doom and Imperium can set you up on that.
And I've seen combats in that game.
Not to to make this all about Dune Imperium as much as I'd love to be talking about that more probably.
But, you know, like, I've seen comments in that game where you're like, I've got 15 troops.
They've got three troops.
There's no way they can win.
And then they happen to have three intrigue cards that are like five swords, discard a spice for six swords, and then make the other person retreat two troops.
And so you definitely can have the big swings like that in Dude Imperium as well.
To I again, I totally disagree.
I don't wanna get into a debate about the the relative, you know, with with Dude Imperium, how this compares, but it this felt differently to me.
I guess I'll put it that way.
This just felt different.
Like, I know I know that if someone's got three Intrigue cards in Doom Imperium, they probably have at least a couple that have swords.
This one felt like there was there was other things going on.
So I guess that that was a frustration I had with the way that combat worked.
And I and I there's a broader point that I was making that, we spent so much time talking about Dune now I completely forgot But what it yeah, so anyway, I I found some of those aspects, like the inability to control your own fate, I found frustrating in some in some places here.
是的。
Yeah.
I think a little swingier, a little more chaotic in this game compared to Dune Imperium, at least I mean, this is a first place.
So maybe with subsequent plays, we'd be able to realize, oh, he's got this these kinda tricks up his sleeve, so I need to be aware of that.
But anyway, that's my general thoughts on the Dune Imperium versus Old King's Crown combat system.
I wanna talk about the the bit of hand management here.
So this wasn't this wasn't like a straight deck builder.
It it was more of a, here's your deck of cards.
You can add a few here and there to your hand.
You're gonna lose some.
Some of your cards might get eliminated and then be lost.
You're gonna put a lot of cards in your discard pile, but maybe you could bring those cards from your discard pile back into your hand.
You had a couple actions in the combat round, a retreat or an ambush that these would let you manage your hand a little bit as well.
Retreat let you bring any cards that were in that region's combat back into your hand, especially if you're gonna lose, and maybe that would give you some other side benefit too.
Or an ambush, you could play another card from your hand face down and add the total of that strength to that region's combat as well.
So but the end of that, you'd lose those cards, those active cards they call them, you put those in your discard pile, and then you draw up to your hand limit, which was started the game at six for everybody.
And the number of times you cycled through your discard pile, every time you cycled through discard pile, reshuffle drew cards that would decrease your hand size limit by one.
So the last round of this game, like Tim said, we only played the short game.
All of our hand size limit went down to five.
I don't know how consequential it was, but in a five round game, six round game, that's something you might have to be keeping track of is how many cards you're gonna have in your hand.
It's gonna limit your options.
You're gonna have some dud cards in there probably.
So you have to figure out what to do with your cards that maybe aren't so good and try to keep those more powerful cards in your hand.
Use some cards up on that council.
If effectively, some of the the good council cards that had two of the little judges gavel on them that you do a little more strength up there and maybe they're only worth zero or two combat.
So a little bit of deciding which cards in your hand are gonna go to which spots on the board, which ones are gonna go to journey versus combat versus council.
I thought a little bit of an interesting decision making process with the hand management in this game.
I've I felt it was kinda boring to be honest.
Like, I I I just wish that they just went to the discard and that you you were shuffling your deck more often.
I didn't think it was very interesting choices and it kind of wasted time every round, which is I think there was a couple elements of the game that did that, like, were a little bit bloated and then just kind of wasted time as people were like thinking through decisions and then they weren't that interested in the systems.
But there were some good there were some
I'm trying to I'm trying to tell the listeners things they could do.
Listen.
There's some positive things.
Don't get me right.
There's there's definitely some positive things too that were fun decisions.
I just felt like like, I don't know.
This is one of those games that feels like just a tad bit of of of extra development.
As far like, I think that there's some really cool things that this this designer has done with the game, to be honest.
But I think a little extra development probably would have would have been helpful here.
One thing that may not be obvious from what we've been talking about is all throughout this game.
There are places where you're going to have actions that are going to be tied to a particular time period within the round.
So you may have kingdom cards that provide a spring action or a winter action or a fall action.
You know, all of these are done chronologically.
So there's a little a little plant bud that's a means it's a spring action or a sun or a moon that means it's a daytime or nighttime action in the summer, which is the combat season.
And then there's the fall where you're doing a lot of sort of prepping for the next year.
And that's got a little brown leaf and then there's a snowflake for the winter.
And so all of these things that you're dealing with, whether it's a card or a location on the board or a tactic tile or a kingdom card.
All of those things have these symbols spread throughout them and you activate them if you want to at the appropriate time of the year.
And so much of this game, like I said in the game description is it's very sequential.
It goes step by step and you literally have this place, these places on the board where you're moving this marker from one location where you're at the first step of the spring.
You move to the second step of the spring and then the third step of the spring and then the first step of the summer.
And so you really have to be conscious of when the things that you have trigger or when the actions that you have access to, when did they trigger?
What are the impacts of those things?
There's a lot of things you have to be keeping track of in this game to be able to apply things appropriately.
And there were several times when I did an action in the fall that gave me another fall action.
And at one point I had said to Adam, I said, well, why don't you go ahead and go?
All I have to do is pick a card.
And then I realized that the card that I purchased gave me like five more fall actions.
But at that point I was like, whatever, you know, I'm not gonna go back and tell them, you know, undo your turn.
So you really do have to keep track of what icons are out there when they trigger and how they work.
是的
Yeah.
There is a juggling of icons and when there so the timing of everything you have to be aware of and what things are gonna resolve in what order.
So if you like that kind of asynchronous puzzle, then this might be the game for you.
And then I wanna mention just a little bit too.
Tim can add on to this too.
The point scoring here was pretty tight.
There wasn't that many a point handout.
So the points were kinda similar to doing a period, I guess.
I ended up I ended up with, I think 16 and then you guys so, you know, that was a pretty large jump in that final round.
I think I've tallied in five or six, which was a big for a combat round.
Kinda like Dune, you can get up to, you know, four or five, six points if you're doing well.
And most of the time, two, three points here or there was a pretty successful round.
是的。
Yeah.
Going back to the the turn or the kind of the order of the turns, Chris, this is a game that needs to be managed a little bit.
And, you know, we're gonna be really helpful if somebody is that manager who wants to just like, okay, guys.
So we're gonna do this phase next.
好的。
Okay.
Did everyone check your icons?
好的。
Okay.
Next phase.
Right?
And and that's okay.
There's some games are are fun like that.
Grande comes to mind as a game that like, I I sold mine because it was so much to manage all of the act you know, all the different phases and the different actions you could do.
And then some phases, it's like, okay, everybody do it all at the same time.
And then the next phase, okay, do it in turn order.
And then in this phase, okay, in reverse turn order, then pick the choice here.
So it's got some management to it for sure.
My favorite part about that though, is that all the spring icons, they look like hops to me.
So just made me wanna be drinking beer.
Alright.
不错。
Cool.
Well, let let's jump into the, let's jump into the theme and production of The Old King's Crown.
The theme was pretty interesting, I thought.
In a lot of ways, it was some basic, I think you called it middle ages kind of stuff, Tim.
Although it was a little bit, you know, time immaterial, I'll say, or vague in terms of what the time period was because there was one card.
It was an airship dock, And so it was almost I don't know what the there's steampunk, but that's kind of more Victorian.
This is almost like steam medieval or something like that where yeah.
But but the idea behind this game is that the old king has died and that the factions are vying.
And each faction is themed to the different actions that it has available to it and it's asynchronousness.
So for example, in this game, I was the old monarchy.
I think Adam was what were you?
You were like the rebels, the insurgents.
That's something.
I wasn't paying attention at all to what our faction, theme was, to be honest.
So you you got further than I would have, Chris, with the names there.
You you were the clans, which are like the the warlords of the of the kingdom.
And so I thought that that, you know, that played out pretty well.
I thought that was represented pretty well in the game as far as the theme goes, and I'll I'll hold my thoughts for now on the production.
Well, theme aside, I'm gonna I'm gonna go right to artwork in this game.
Just like last week, Adam.
Just like last
周。
week.
它它
It's it's
the star of the show.
I'm sure if you haven't if you've heard anything about this game, you've probably heard about the artwork.
The artist is also the designer, and then art is incredible.
I think it's beautiful.
Those line work and the play with light and shadows and a little bit of flavor text on the cards.
Each of these cards is brilliant, tells a little story, and it's got some little humorous flavor text on each one of these.
The game board is beautiful.
You could stare at it and find little details, little Easter eggs in each of the regions, each of the little lands.
It was just fun to look at during the game.
So that's where I'll stop with the artwork.
Just incredibly beautiful.
是的。
Yeah.
The artwork is awesome.
I think the production across the board in this game is fantastic.
Was this a Kickstarter?
Do you guys know?
Or was this just like a direct to retail?
It was a Kickstarter.
是的。
Yeah.
And I think this is where I probably have gotten my critique of Kickstarter wrong a little bit.
And that I don't think productions like this will ever exist commonly without Kickstarter dollars behind them.
This how productions get made like this.
Obviously the star of the show is the artwork and the fact that the designer is also the artist is so impressive.
Like I can't wrap my head around the idea that somebody can have those two very different skill sets and pull them both off.
And I honestly think that the designer here, Pablo Clark did like he made a game that works and he produced a beautiful looking game with his own hand.
And I am just in awe of that.
So that's really cool.
But otherwise, the production's just cool across the board.
The player boards, those little tiles, the tactics tiles you can play each of the player boards, they all kind of line up to your player board and then you flip them over when you use them.
They all have different kind of designs or like lines across the bottom of them so that they're each shaped differently for no reason other than it's just a cool production mechanism.
And the track, like the graphic design, the user experience, should say is really smart.
Like you got all these different phases you gotta track, but there's this token you just kind of follow around the board and it gets to the different phases of the game and it just, it kind of all works.
So I think it's just a wonderful production here.
Like I, we played it on tabletop simulator.
I am dying to see this on the table.
So Chris, regardless of what you feel about the game and your final thoughts, I I mean, like, I would recommend tell your friend to get it set up and play it with them so that you can actually see this on the table because it looks awesome.
是的。
Yeah.
I Or not.
I will hold my thoughts on whether I'll actually do that until the end.
But yes, I agree.
The production is absolutely astonishingly good in all aspects, particularly the art.
And like you, Tim, I completely I'm completely blown away that the designer was also the artist because normally if you have a great design, you don't have a, the person is not a great artist as well.
Here you have both.
You have a good design and you have, and you have some really excellent art.
One of the things that I really appreciated about the art was how unique it was from card to card.
Like every single card I believe was different.
I don't think there were any duplicates.
Each faction, even though we had the same abilities, had different art and was themed to the particular faction, including the upgraded cards that you could buy.
Those were all different.
So really everything you saw, each one was its own unique piece of artwork.
So kudos to Pablo Clark for pulling off a real hat trick there.
酷。
Cool.
Well, jump into our final question.
Would you request to play The Old King's Crown again?
No, I did not love this game.
I not even sure I'd say I liked the game.
It plays four to six rounds, and by the end of round four, I was quite ready for it to be over.
And I think a lot of that had to do with the density of the rules.
I mean, it was it was some really dense rules.
There was a lot of little details you had to remember, and you had to constantly keep them in your head, as well as the things that were on the table in front of you remembering when to play the different pieces, you know, following this this track where you're going from step to step to step.
I I found it unpleasantly procedural.
And that is not normally something that I enjoy in a game.
And you combine that with the fact that there were so many little details to remember.
I mean, I was going back and looking at the instruction booklet in this one so many times to remember how does this action operate?
How does this different, how does this icon affect the the combat?
And then the combat, which should have been the most exciting part of the game ended up being really frustrating because part of it being that it was so simple.
It was kind of like in a way, I mentioned Wonderlands War, but without the fun part of drawing the tiles.
You just put down the card and then you resolve the combat.
Maybe there's an impact or two from some action, but, you know, it didn't have the fun of Wonderlands War.
So that was kind of kind of sad.
One thing that it reminded me of in a negative way in a game that I thought still maintained a better overall feel is Nemesis.
In Nemesis, there is that same procedural kind of turn where you're going step by step by step through your turn.
And I can see both of these guys are giving me this like, what are you talking about?
是的。
Yeah.
In no other way does this game remind me of Nemesis, Don't get me wrong.
We will give it
like Nemesis, you kind of have to go through, okay, we do this and then we do this and then we do this and you're kind of constantly cycling through this, this set of, of steps.
And I think it here, the payoff just wasn't high enough to make it worth that effort.
Yeah, Chris.
I think procedural is a good word.
Would I request to play Old Kings crown again?
I I think it's worth at least one more look.
There was a couple fun moments in the game, a couple fun trickery that I could do with my little fact my what are they called?
TTTs, tactics tiles.
So I thought that was a little bit interesting.
The card play was kind of fun and being able to get some combos going with the that council up there and pulling my but you're right.
There was a lot of, oh, now I'm gonna do this.
I'm gonna do that.
There was what?
The spring phase when everybody had to resolve their spring action, spring abilities in order.
I was doing that for like ten minutes.
I had like all these spring abilities on my board.
I feel bad for you guys.
I was like, okay, I'm gonna do this.
I'm get this thing here and this thing here.
And you guys are like, oh, come on, Adam.
This is life.
So, yeah, is the payoff worth it?
I don't know.
There's a couple good moments.
And then if you get if people play this one enough, so yeah, you played it five, six times and then you just could whip out all your moves nice and quickly, then is it gonna be fun then?
I don't know.
I wanna check it out at least one more time, but I'm not dying to get back to this one.
As much as I thought, you know, there's a lot of hype around this game.
I shut up a sit down, did a big huge piece on it.
And, no pun included, they also did, a forty five minute video on this one.
So there's just tons of hype going on about this one.
And I don't see it.
It's just a, a bloaty lane battler with some interesting moments to sum it up.
So that's Old King's Crown for me worth at least one more look.
Maybe the close Bloaty lane battler.
I don't think they're gonna be putting that on their box in the next in second edition.
This might be the closest that Adam and I agree on any topic ever.
I think this game is worth the second look, but I'm probably not gonna be searching it out quickly.
But I I think I would like to I I guess I would say I'm on the fence.
Like, right now here's the deal.
Right?
We get to the end of the third round.
And I said, we had started at beginning of the game.
Like, are we gonna play a four round or five round game?
We kinda decided, well, why don't we leave it open?
We'll see how timing is going and stuff like that.
So we got to the end of the third round.
They said, guys, are we gonna end it at four rounds or do you wanna go to five?
And I was praying that you were gonna end it at four.
Like, I I really was kinda tired of the game.
It was it was it was it was dragging a little bit.
Like, I I didn't real
And I think the score was, like, nine to it was a tight score.
Was, like, nine to eight
to eight or at that point.
And so it was like it could have been an exciting and an intense moment.
But honestly, I was just kinda it was kinda bored with the game at that point.
So it's like it has some cool stuff going on and some very big and exciting moments, which could make you feeling very bad.
Like, there is some rough take that and mean moments in this game.
是的。
Yeah.
But, you know, if you kinda go I actually meant to say before we started the game tonight, guys, I meant to say, just remember that this is one of those types of games that you are just gonna lose crap, and and you think you're set up to win a battle and you're not going to.
I didn't remember to say that.
I would definitely prep somebody new to to sit down and play this because this is gonna make some people feel bad.
I guarantee you.
It's gonna create some bad moments.
是的。
Yeah.
But but I but I also had some fun moments that I thought all the asymmetry and all the different effects that can trigger are cool.
I think it's too heavy and too long for what you get out of it.
I I think I'd rather almost almost always for a game that is about just flipping a card and hoping you guess right against the other players, I'd rather play Libertalia Winds of Galecrest any day of the week.
And that's gonna go really quick.
It's gonna be fun, quick moments, And this just took too much time.
And and there was too much downtime in some of the phases where other people had a bunch of effects to think about and trigger.
And, yeah, it just dragged for what for what you get out of the game.
But all that to be said, I I think I would like to try it again sitting at a table, seeing this beautiful production on the table in front of me, and maybe with the second play, this may be one of those games where it's just even like, I'm I'm over it even quicker on the next play because I feel like I've kind of already experienced it.
Or it could be one of those games that you played a couple times, and then the the thrill of it starts to become apparent where you've got these huge moments you can set yourself up for, and you can stop other people from doing the things they want to.
I'm not quite sure where old the old king's crown is gonna fall yet.
I suspect it's gonna be a maybe one more play for me and then I'm probably good with it.
But, but I'd give it another try for sure if I had the opportunity.
是的
Yeah.
I just wanna weigh in on that last part you just said.
I feel like this is a game where to be really competent at it, you'd have to play it a bunch of times to really get the strategy and understand it.
But after, well, after one play, was already kinda bored with it.
So by the time I'm really good at it, I'm gonna be really bored of it.
Sad sadly.
Sadly, because, you know, it it it was a game that had potential.
Alright.
Well, that will wrap up our thoughts on the old king's crowd.
Let's jump into some games that have been on our table right after this.
Welcome back, Chris.
What have you been playing lately?
So I've had so many new games on the table recently.
One that I'll just mention really quickly is the game that we reviewed last week, is Echoes of Time.
I've now played it three times.
I bought a copy of it while we were sitting there at the table doing our review last week.
And since then, I've played it with my my local game group and I played it with my wife.
And so far at least, I feel as strongly about it, probably more strongly about it than I did the when we did the review.
And I think we all liked it when we did the review.
The puzzle here is absolutely entrancing.
It's magical.
And I am really, really enjoying it.
So I'm looking forward to when we get a chance to sit down and play this one in real life when we get together next time.
And we also just started a game on DGA.
It's now in alpha, I believe.
是的。
Yeah.
So check it out.
我可以
Can I
just mention?
对。
Yeah.
Just really quick.
I wanna mention we did.
I've only taken like two turns in that right now.
And I gotta say this is one of those games that I think I really, really preferred even playing on tabletop simulator over board game arena.
And I think one of the reasons for that is that when you play your card into the time track, it just becomes this little icon and you don't have the beautiful artwork showing.
But otherwise, I just also feel like it just it feels like, I don't know, too abstract.
I feel like this is a game I wanna have the cards in my hand.
I can be looking at them easily.
I don't wanna be scrolling up and down the screen.
So maybe not not gonna be a great BGA game for me, I think.
But we'll get through a full game.
It's still an alpha too.
It is a great Still an alpha.
It is a great IRL game.
好的。
Okay.
It is still yeah.
Good good call, Adam.
It is still an alpha.
Good point.
对。
Yeah.
Maybe they'll maybe they'll make some of the things that I've got complete.
Although I have to admit that anytime I've ever said that about an alpha game on board game arena, they don't change the things that I have problems with.
Like, might fix some bugs.
They might make some minor, interface adjustments.
Terraforming Mars actually did some nice improvements after alpha.
But most of the time, they end up sticking about we're there.
But in any case, I'm not complaining about it.
I'm just saying that I think it'll be more fun to play in person.
So the other game that I wanted to mention, a new game to me is one that I was introduced to by friend of the show, Mur Omega, who is a, a Canadian listener and who also knows that I'm a Pacific Northwestern guy.
And so wanted to introduce me to another game like Cascadia set in my beloved Pacific Northwest.
It's called Reforest and it was designed by Sebastian Bernier Wong and is published by Firestarter Games.
This is very much like a simplified version of Wingspan without the boards and the complexity of the different actions that have to be triggered, whenever you play a card.
Essentially, what you're doing is you're creating this tableau of three cards at the bottom, two cards in the middle, one card at the top, basically replicating a mountain and where the cards can go in that mountain in that little triangle are dictated by the cards, which are all different plants.
So instead of having, birds, you have plants in this game.
But in other ways, this is incredibly similar in time in terms of the type of actions in the things that result from playing these cards.
So you may have actions that let you draw a card.
If you play another card adjacent to this one, you can plant over cards and create fodder that you can use to buy cards in the in the future.
And ultimately in each round, you're trying to accomplish certain goals that are related to animals, what they call visitors that will come into your plant area and based on what you're looking for, whether it's a a bear that might want lots of berries or, you know, a rabbit that needs places that it can hide in the understory are gonna dictate what goals you're trying to shoot for each round.
So, Murr and I have been playing this game on BGA where it is available.
This is a 2024 game, so out pretty recently.
And so far it has been a lot of fun.
If you like wingspan, this one is quicker, simpler, and has some of those same feels as wingspan.
It also has some really beautiful Pacific Northwest plant art, which probably gives me a light, advantage here because I think I have most of this stuff in my yard.
So when I saw salmonberries in there, was like, oh yeah, This is this is my game.
So having a lot of fun with this one.
Again, this is Reforest.
Check it out.
Chris, this looks delightful.
Is it it looks like it's just a deck of cards.
Right?
A box, a little deck of cards?
是的。
Yep.
Beautiful.
And it has that that sort of nature drawing to sketches with the individual plant or animal on the card and some tags going with.
So this one looks delightful.
Love to try this one.
Beautiful little production.
Looks like you can take this one on the road, play while you're camping up there in the PNW reforest.
No doubt.
Aside from being from the Pacific Northwest, Chris, what would make somebody choose to play this game over over Wingspan for a shuffle?
Like, what is it what's it's like hook?
What does it have that's got it that that it's got going for it?
Couple things.
Comparing it to Forest Shuffle, it Forest Shuffle is a heavier game.
There's more complexity and it's a table hog.
I have played that one in real life and it takes up a lot of space when you're laying out these, you're laying out all the cards into your tableau that can take up quite a bit of space.
This is a much smaller game.
The tableau is very small.
It's only gonna end up being six cards total.
So, couple of differences there.
《Wingspan》。
Wingspan.
It might just be that you're more interested in plants than you are with birds.
It might be that you want something a little bit lighter.
This is listed at a 2.64, which I don't think is that much different than wingspan.
Although I feel like this is a slightly lighter game, but Adam pointed out one thing I think that is different.
It's just a deck of cards.
So you can sit there.
You can play this at a picnic table, which you can't really do with Wingspan, at least not super easily.
I mean, there's you need a you need all the dice and you need all the little bits and pieces.
You don't have any of the the resources or the little chits that you'd have to use in Wingspan.
None of that exists.
There's no dice.
It's just that deck of cards and that's all you're gonna need.
Interesting.
This resource is weighted at 2.64 and Wingspan's at 2.48.
So I don't know about that.
是的。
Yeah.
I thought that was really weird.
Like, I think that wingspan is definitely a higher than 2.48 weight.
Like, it's more components.
It's a little it's a little weird to track your cube going through all the abilities that you're triggering all the time.
There's so many effects you gotta pay attention to.
I think that BGG community has underweighted Wingspan.
That's my
I bet you're right.
That's my I think you're right.
Strong opinion, my hot take on Wingspan.
It cooled down over here.
Alright.
On my table's been a couple of things.
First, I'm gonna go back to dead cells and talk about that for a little bit.
So I kept playing that.
I used a different character called the quartered, and I found a very potentially overpowered combo.
If you don't wanna hear about it, you know, turn the volume down and turn it back up in about twenty seconds.
Anyway, you get the quartered and you upgrade your red track with the quartered or your purple track.
Either one of those will do the red track at least one and the purple track, you know, the more the better.
And you get this weapon called the lacerating aura.
It lets you do damage to the front and then if you have another combat card, it lets you do damage to the rear of you two.
So and you get to double up on your special ability.
So the last ring order is a special ability.
So you get to do four damage twice every time you have an ability.
And you get to do that sometimes in round zero.
So you can just you're just hacking through everybody by the time it's around, you know, by the time you're in round one and a half, you just slice through everybody and it's all over.
So that was neat to find it, but then it made the game just trivial after that.
So anyway, a very powerful combination there in Dead Cells.
First time I've ever found any sort of freaky combination like that.
Still think the game is pretty neat, but a little disappointing with that combination.
Anyway, the game I wanna talk about it, it's been on my table that I played in Fullerton at the library there.
It is called Biblios, and I had heard about this one a billion times because I listened to Board Game Barrage, and that's all I think Nieland is, like, his favorite game ever in the world, and he takes a lot of heat for it.
But I wanted to see what it was about, and some guy had this, so we played it.
What you're doing here in Biblios is Tim kind of alluded to this one earlier.
It's kind of two stages in this game.
It's two sort of separate arcs.
So the first part, you have the whole deck of cards and we had a four player game going.
So, you deal out five cards and the first card you get to choose.
Is it gonna go into the common pile or is it gonna go into a future auction pile or is it gonna go into your own hand?
So you make those choices with the five cards.
Of the three cards that go into that common pile, you decide which other players are getting those face up cards.
So a little bit of memory here if you wanna try to keep track of who's getting what other cards.
But you do this for the whole entire deck of cards.
There's five suits of cards.
You're getting these cards with the end goal of trying to control these different suits.
There's gonna be five different suits that you're gonna score for at the end.
These are the point value of these suits is controlled by a d six, which you're gonna manipulate during the game.
Anyway, once you go through the whole deck, everybody has their cards.
Now you're doing an auction for the cards that were stashed in the auction pile that everybody decided to put in the auction pile.
So you look if a a suit card turns up, you get to bid money cards and then that just goes around an auction.
How much money you're gonna bid?
You pay the money for it, throw that out.
Now you're down some money, but you gain a suit card.
If it's a money card that comes up, you're gonna bid suit cards for it.
So you just say how many cards you're gonna toss out to obtain a a money card.
And you could also throw, like, a a $1 money card for a $3 money card.
So you've just upped your income a couple bucks.
So it's a couple different auctions here.
So you're distributing the deck the first half, and then once everybody has a hand of cards, you're auctioning for this other chunk of cards.
And then that's it.
You've manipulated the dice while you're doing this, and, hopefully, you've built the the highest number in the suits that you wanna score for while these dice are being manipulated in each of the five color suits.
Then you just tally it up who's got the most of the brown suit, who's got the most of the blue suit, the green suit, the yellow suit, and the red suit.
And that's worth between one and six points depending on what each of those dice value are in those suits.
And that's the game.
Pretty simple.
It sounds like maybe not much is going on, but it is.
There's a lot thoughtful going on.
There's a couple cards that let you manipulate the dices, the dice, The die?
有
There's
dice.
Either up the value one or dice.
Up the value one or decrease one or, you know, change two different dice faces to some, you know, up up one or down one.
So a couple simple manipulations of dice, lots of auctioning, quick game.
It's pretty good.
Yeah, I feel like this a lot too.
I've played it.
I've played it and I have been keeping a little bit of an eye out for the original version, even though it is kind of a bland theme.
They did do a remake of it with kind of a comical arts, like, little bit of a comical theme of, like, I don't know, kings or something.
I don't know.
But it looks dumb.
So, like, I I kinda want the old version of Biblios.
Really fun game, though.
I I had a great time with
