You're listening to Brains On, where we're serious about being curious.

Speaker 0

There's an old story that goes something like this.

Speaker 0

Two fish are swimming in the water.

Speaker 1

And a turtle stands by and says, good morning, fish.

Speaker 1

How's the water?

Speaker 0

The two younger fish smile and nod and swim on for a bit.

Speaker 0

Then one fish stops and says to the other, what the heck is water?

Speaker 1

The fish didn't notice the water because they've been in it all their life.

Speaker 1

They never thought about it.

Speaker 0

The point is that there are things all around us that we just don't notice because they've always been there.

Speaker 1

Like the taste of your own spit.

Speaker 0

Or the smell of plain old air.

Speaker 1

Or how right now the earth is spinning hundreds of miles an hour and somehow we don't feel it.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That's a lot of speed, but I've never noticed it.

Speaker 0

Me neither.

Speaker 0

So hold on tight, and we'll explain why that is.

Speaker 2

Do you love mystery sounds?

Speaker 2

Because I love mystery sounds.

Speaker 2

That's why I'm here in our mystery sound storage room, just admiring all the wonderful sounds, like this one.

Speaker 2

Is that a mystery sound or sweet music?

Speaker 2

I can't tell the difference.

Speaker 2

Did you guess that it was my dog's collar?

Speaker 2

If so, great job.

Speaker 2

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 2

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 2

How about this one?

Speaker 2

I love this one.

Speaker 2

You know it?

Speaker 2

It's me fluffing a napkin.

Speaker 2

And who could forget this?

Speaker 2

Combing a gerbil?

Speaker 2

I know.

Speaker 2

Too easy.

Speaker 2

It's the sound of a plastic fork I fashioned into a comb to comb the hair of my gerbil named Larry.

Speaker 2

We've all heard it a thousand times.

Speaker 2

I love mystery sounds because they make you stop and pay attention.

Speaker 2

Speaker 0

I'm Molly Bloom, and my cohost today is Reean from Seattle.

Speaker 0

Hi, Reean.

Speaker 1

Hey, Molly.

Speaker 1

I love what you've done with the studio, the mirrors, the disco ball.

Speaker 1

Is that a ballet bar?

Speaker 0

It's not me.

Speaker 0

那是Gongador。

It's Gongador.

Speaker 0

The dance obsessed monster who lives at our headquarters, he decorated it to look like a dance studio so he can tape his new video podcast here.

Speaker 0

It's called monster moves.

Speaker 1

Monster moves?

Speaker 0

It's one of those podcasts where a bunch of giant monsters sit around and talk about famous choreography from movies and musicals.

Speaker 1

Oh, one of those.

Speaker 0

I hope his podcast can stand out from all the other podcasts where giant monsters discuss famous choreography for movies and musicals.

Speaker 1

I know Godzilla's podcast, Giant Steps, is a mega hit.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That's what inspired him.

Speaker 0

That and King Kong's podcast, Kong and Dance.

Speaker 1

Of course.

Speaker 1

A classic podcast.

Speaker 0

Anyway, today we're talking about the earth and answering a question that you asked us, Reean.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I wanted to know why can't you feel the earth spinning?

Speaker 0

Great question.

Speaker 0

Right now, you, me, and everything on the planet is spinning, spinning, spinning, and yet somehow we never feel it.

Speaker 1

Kind of like how our hair is always growing, but we never feel that either.

Speaker 0

Oh, I feel it.

Speaker 0

Every second.

Speaker 0

Every single moment, I feel my curls creeping higher and higher, reaching for the sky, like Icarus flying too close to the sun until one day, snip.

Speaker 0

They get clipped and I get a cute new haircut.

Speaker 1

Okay.

Speaker 0

So, Reean, what got you curious about the earth spinning?

Speaker 1

I got this question when I was on the car looking at the wheel and suddenly, I thought the earth is spinning too.

Speaker 1

So why can't we feel it?

Speaker 0

Great question.

Speaker 0

Do you like rides that spin a lot?

Speaker 0

Kinda like, you know, the merry-go-round on a playground?

Speaker 1

I don't really like spinning, but it's cool to see things spinning like a top.

Speaker 0

Do you get dizzy easily?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Very easily.

Speaker 0

So does that mean you get, like, motion sick in cars too?

Speaker 1

Not that much.

Speaker 1

I just get dizzy when I'm spinning.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

所以

So

Speaker 0

when you are dizzy, do you like how that feels?

Speaker 1

No.

Speaker 1

It's weird.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

I don't really like it.

Speaker 0

I get it.

Speaker 0

When I was little, I actually kinda like to feel dizzy, so I would like spin on purpose.

Speaker 0

But now that I'm older, I really don't like that feeling at all.

Speaker 0

So, Reean, when you have a big question, do you like to find the answer right away, or do you like to just kinda, like, ponder it?

Speaker 1

I like to ponder it more.

Speaker 0

Where do you do your best thinking?

Speaker 1

I'm just, like, sitting on the couch and, like, looking at the TV, but the TV is not really on.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

So then I just keep thinking until I think of an idea or something.

Speaker 0

I like that.

Speaker 0

So, like, the TV is sort of like a stand in for you to, like, watch your own thoughts.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

That's really cool.

Speaker 0

Well, I love that we are spinning all the time.

Speaker 0

It is very fun to think about.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And you can tell we're spinning because the sun rises and sets every day.

Speaker 0

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

The sun isn't actually going around our planet once every twenty four hours.

Speaker 0

Instead, it's our planet that is spinning us into and out of the light of the sun.

Speaker 0

That's because our planet is spinning on an axis.

Speaker 1

Like a spinning top or a ball spinning on someone's finger.

Speaker 0

We call this a rotation.

Speaker 0

Each day on Earth is one rotation.

Speaker 0

That means our planet rotates or spins once around every twenty four hours.

Speaker 0

So imagine the spot you're in right now.

Speaker 0

When that spot rotates to where it is just starting to face the sun, that's sunrise.

Speaker 1

The Earth keeps spinning, and to us on Earth, it looks like the sun is moving across the sky.

Speaker 0

And later, as it keeps spinning, that side turns away from the light and goes into shadow.

Speaker 1

That's nighttime for that side.

Speaker 0

One full rotation is one full day.

Speaker 1

Cool facts.

Speaker 1

But riddle me this.

Speaker 1

Why does the planet spin anyway?

Speaker 0

Another great question.

Speaker 0

Before Earth existed, even before the sun existed, our solar system was just a cloud of gas in space.

Speaker 0

Space gas.

Speaker 0

That cloud of gas was full of molecules that bumped into each other, and lots of those molecules hit each other various angles, which caused them to spin.

Speaker 1

Kind of like how if you kick a soccer ball at an ankle, you can get a good spin on it.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

More and more of them started spinning and knocking into each other, creating more spin until the whole gas cloud was swirling like water going down a drain.

Speaker 0

Eventually, some of that spinning cloud of gas formed our sun, and other parts of that cloud of gas eventually formed Earth.

Speaker 0

And because the pieces that came together to form the Earth and sun were spinning, the Earth and sun kept spinning.

Speaker 0

The spin never stopped.

Speaker 1

So thanks to random bits of gas bumping into each other and creating a spin, our planet now rotates and we have day and night?

Speaker 0

Kind of blows your mind when you really think about it.

Speaker 0

And another amazing thing is that the Earth is spinning really fast.

Speaker 1

Think of a cheetah, a race car, or a bullet train.

Speaker 0

Those are slowpokes compared to the Earth's spin.

Speaker 1

A cheetah can run around 70 miles per hour.

Speaker 1

A race car and a bullet train can both zip along at 200 miles per hour.

Speaker 0

But our planet rotates every moment at a speed of about 1,000 miles an hour if you measure at the Equator, which is like the belt around the middle of a globe.

Speaker 0

Now if you were at the park and you saw a merry-go-round

Speaker 1

Woah.

Speaker 1

A merry-go-round.

Speaker 1

That's my favorite.

Speaker 0

And you hopped on that merry-go-round.

Speaker 1

Let's spin.

Speaker 1

Make it go faster.

Speaker 1

Faster.

Speaker 0

And it went so fast it reached a thousand miles an hour like the Earth, you would not only feel it, you'd be flung off and go flying.

Speaker 1

Wee.

Speaker 1

No regrets.

Speaker 1

So why aren't we flung off the Earth, which is basically the largest merry-go-round ever?

Speaker 1

We don't even get dizzy.

Speaker 0

We'll answer that in just a minute.

Speaker 0

But for now, let's give our ears a spin and check out the

Speaker 1

Mystery Sound.

Speaker 0

Here it is.

Speaker 0

That was shark.

Speaker 0

Can we hear it again?

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Reean, what do you think?

Speaker 1

Maybe when, like, you're on a boat and then, like, you open a window and, like, you can hear, like, all the sounds and you close it again.

Speaker 0

It sounds like it's outside to me.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

There's like weird, like, rumble sound at the background.

Speaker 0

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

I think I heard birds maybe?

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

I think it's outside.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna think like a piece of playground equipment.

Speaker 0

But what makes that sound?

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

Let's say, someone got their pants stuck in a swing.

Speaker 0

I don't know how somebody's pants will get stuck in a swing.

Speaker 0

They're trying to get their pants they're like the hem of their their cuff

Speaker 1

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

Stuck.

Speaker 1

That might be a pretty good idea.

Speaker 0

Like Really?

Speaker 1

Because I think like the swing set makes that sound and then the background is, like, the kids, like, playing.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna say swing set related.

Speaker 0

I like your boat idea, but we'll get another chance to hear it and guess and hear the answer at the end of the show.

Speaker 0

We're working on an episode all about light bulbs.

Speaker 0

Light bulbs are often used in comics or cartoons to show when someone gets a bright idea.

Speaker 0

They may also shout something like, I've got it, or Eureka.

Speaker 0

Like,

Speaker 1

maybe the first person to think of dipping spicy chicken wings in cool, soothing ranch dressing.

Speaker 1

They probably shouted, Eureka, a perfect pair.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

So we wanna hear from you.

Speaker 0

What word do you think we should shout when we have a light bulb moment?

Speaker 0

Reean,

Reean, what would you shout when you have a bright idea?

Speaker 1

I would shout, ooga booga.

Speaker 0

I really like that.

Speaker 0

Is it okay if I borrow that next time I get a good idea?

Speaker 0

Sure.

Speaker 0

Thank you so much.

Speaker 0

各位听众,赶紧录下你的点子,发到 BrainsOn.org/contact 告诉我们吧。

Well, listeners record your idea and send it to us at BrainsOn dot org slash contact.

Welcome to Monster Moves, a podcast where monsters talk dance.

Speaker 3

I am host Gungador.

Speaker 3

Guest today are Bigfoot and Kraken.

Speaker 3

Hello, Gungador.

Speaker 4

Truly a pleasure to be here.

Speaker 2

Crockin' hungry.

Speaker 3

Today, we talk about famous dance movie, Singing in Rain, starring Gungador's hero, Gene Kelly.

Speaker 4

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 4

It's quite the film.

Speaker 4

And Gene Kelly's iconic choreography in this scene where he is literally dancing in the rain is pure Hollywood magic.

Speaker 4

He's both so athletic and so joyous.

Speaker 4

And to think while filming that scene, he was ill and running a fever of 103 degrees.

Speaker 4

But it doesn't show because Kelly is ever the professional.

Speaker 3

Great points.

Speaker 3

What are cracking thoughts on movie?

Speaker 2

Rain.

Speaker 2

Wet.

Speaker 3

Another good point.

Speaker 3

Coming up, Gungaro's dream fan cast for Frankenstein the musical.

And we're talking about the spin of the earth.

Speaker 0

The rotation of this station.

Speaker 1

The twirl of the world.

Speaker 0

And we're wondering if the planet is going round and round so fast, why don't we feel it?

Speaker 1

There are a few main reasons.

Speaker 1

One has to do with how smooth the spin is.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

The earth has been rotating at a very constant speed for a very long time.

Speaker 0

That speed doesn't really change.

Speaker 1

We notice motion the most when things are speeding up or slowing down, like when a car suddenly breaks.

Speaker 0

Or a plane speeds up to take off.

Speaker 1

Or when we change directions, like when you're riding your bike but suddenly swerve to miss a pothole.

Speaker 0

Those changes in speed and direction feel like movement.

Speaker 0

But imagine you're on a long train ride.

Speaker 0

And imagine you're on that train with all the window shades closed.

Speaker 0

If the train is going at a very steady speed and there are no bumps or turns in the track, you won't notice that you're moving at all.

Speaker 1

It'll just feel like you're in a normal still room.

Speaker 0

It's not until you open the shades that you see the world whizzing by.

Speaker 1

In the room of the train, though, all the seats, the books you've brought, even the air, it's all moving the same speed as you.

Speaker 0

Which means to you, it seems like it's not moving.

Speaker 0

That is relative to you, it's perfectly still.

Speaker 0

This is called relative motion.

Speaker 1

Now when we apply this to the whole planet, Liris is moving very smoothly through space.

Speaker 0

There are no bumps along the way and no dramatic speeding up or slowing down.

Speaker 0

Plus, all the plants, mountains, buildings, oceans, animals are all moving at exactly the same speed as you.

Speaker 1

Which means again to you, it seems like they aren't moving at all.

Speaker 1

They're staying still.

Speaker 0

So that's one reason we don't feel the spin of the earth.

Speaker 0

But what about being flung off the planet?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Even if the speed is constant, it's a lot of speed.

Speaker 1

And when things spin on earth, they tend to fly outward.

Speaker 0

Think of putting a bunch of tennis balls on that merry-go-round from before.

Speaker 0

Give it a super spin, and the balls will go flying off.

Speaker 1

That motion flinging the balls away from the merry-go-round is sometimes called centrifugal force.

Speaker 0

And a spinning planet makes some pretty strong centrifugal force.

Speaker 0

But it turns out there's an even stronger force stopping it from flinging you and me and everything else out into space.

Speaker 0

And that force is

Speaker 1

重力。

Gravity.

Speaker 1

重力。

Gravity.

Speaker 0

So, yes, there is, in fact, a centrifugal force acting on us, trying to fling us into space, but we don't fly off because gravity is doing the opposite.

Speaker 1

Gravity is trying to pin us down on this massive planet.

Speaker 0

And gravity is much, much stronger than the centrifugal force.

Speaker 0

Compared to the gravity, it's so weak that we don't even really notice it.

Speaker 0

We just notice the gravity.

Speaker 3

重力。

Gravity.

Speaker 0

So even though we are constantly twirling, it doesn't feel like we are.

Speaker 1

That's in part thanks to relative motion and how smooth the spin is.

Speaker 0

And in part thanks to gravity keeping our feet on the ground, which is great because if we could feel the earth spinning, we'd be dizzy all the time.

Speaker 1

That brings us to this question.

Speaker 1

你好。

Hi.

Speaker 1

My name is Henry, and I'm from a store in New York City.

Speaker 1

My question is, why do we get dizzy when we spin around?

Speaker 0

We'll answer that right after we check the mailbag.

Speaker 5

Hey.

Speaker 5

It's Sandin, and hey ho.

Speaker 3

Oh, Gungador has listener question.

Speaker 0

嘿,Gungador。

Hey, Gungador.

Speaker 0

I love spinning when I dance, but I get dizzy.

Speaker 0

Can you help?

Speaker 3

Yes.

Speaker 3

Of course.

Speaker 3

Gungador can help.

Speaker 3

Come closer.

Speaker 3

It's a secret.

Speaker 3

I will whisper it.

Speaker 3

The secret is never stop spinning.

Speaker 3

Earth is always spinning, and we don't feel it because Earth never stops spinning.

Speaker 3

So you two must never stop like this.

Speaker 1

所以

So

Speaker 3

dizzy.

Speaker 3

I love it.

Speaker 0

Welcome back.

Speaker 0

Reean

Reean and I are going to tackle this question next.

Speaker 1

Why do we get dizzy when we spin around?

Speaker 1

Oh, I know this one.

Speaker 1

It's an eerie answer, but irresistibly interesting.

Speaker 0

I'm all ears.

Speaker 0

Ready to ear it?

Speaker 0

If you haven't guessed yet, it has to do with your ears.

Speaker 1

Strangely enough, it has to do with the fluid in your ears, but not like water stuck in there after you get out of the pool.

Speaker 0

Deep in your inner ears, away from the stuff you can touch with your finger, there are tubes filled with a special liquid.

Speaker 0

And as you move, that liquid sloshes around.

Speaker 0

There are special hairs in that liquid that bend and move as the liquid moves, and those hairs send signals to your brain about what they're doing.

Speaker 1

The sloshing liquid with those special hairs is one of the ways your brain knows you are moving your head.

Speaker 1

Like, say you turn your

Speaker 0

head to the right real quick.

Speaker 0

That'll make the liquid slosh to the right too.

Speaker 1

That tells the brain, hey.

Speaker 1

We just turned to the right.

Speaker 0

Or say you lay your head down to rest.

Speaker 0

As you do, that liquid will slosh around moving those hair cells, which tells the brain

Speaker 1

The head is laying down now.

Speaker 0

So when you spin and spin and spin, what do you think happens with that ear liquid?

Speaker 1

It goes wild, sloshing like the ocean in a storm.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

It sloshes so much that even when you stop moving, it's still going.

Speaker 1

Which is super confusing for your brain.

Speaker 1

It's getting signals from the eyes and body that you are now standing still.

Speaker 0

But the ears are like, yeah, no, we are definitely still moving.

Speaker 0

My ear liquid is sloshing like nobody's business.

Speaker 1

That mix up of signals is what we call dizziness.

Speaker 0

Luckily, it only takes a few moments for the ear fluid to settle down and for things to get back to normal.

Speaker 0

Dizziness gone.

Speaker 2

My brain's on.

Speaker 3

你好,Reean。

Hi, Reean.

Speaker 3

你好,Molly。

Hi, Molly.

Speaker 0

哦,嘿,Gungador。

Oh, hey, Gungador.

Speaker 0

What's up?

Speaker 3

Big news.

Speaker 3

Gungador

Gungador's podcast is going to have mega super good guest next week.

Speaker 1

Oh, who is it?

Speaker 3

Do you know K pop demon hunters?

Speaker 0

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 0

Are you interviewing Rumi about her dancing?

Speaker 3

不是。

No.

Speaker 3

Even better.

Speaker 3

Gungador

Gungador is interviewing the demons.

Speaker 3

Coolest dance monsters ever.

Speaker 0

The earth is always spinning at a speed of about 1,000 miles an hour.

Speaker 1

That spin gives us day and night.

Speaker 0

But we never feel that spinning because it's constant.

Speaker 1

We also don't get flung off the planet thanks to gravity.

Speaker 0

There's fluid in our ears that helps our brains know when we move.

Speaker 1

And when we spin a lot, that fluid keeps moving even after we stop, which makes us feel dizzy.

Speaker 0

That's it for this episode of brains on.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

Reean,

Reean, are you ready for that Mystery Sound again?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Here it is.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

New thoughts, Reean.

Speaker 1

It could be when you're at home, when you open the window with that like weird handle, And then like, maybe it was like windy that day.

Speaker 0

Great idea.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna say you're outside and you're flipping a metal switch that you're not sure what it does, and it turns out it does nothing.

Speaker 0

Should we see if we're right?

Speaker 3

Sure.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

Here's the answer.

Speaker 1

你好。

Hi.

Speaker 1

My name is Mika, and my name is Alma.

Speaker 1

That was the sound of our bike kickstand, getting kicked up, and then getting kicked down.

Speaker 1

哦

Oh,

Speaker 0

a bike kickstand.

Speaker 0

Getting kicked?

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

You know, like, how there's that thing, the kickstand?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So, like, when you kick up the kickstand with your foot, it goes like bring up, and you can kick it down again.

Speaker 0

It goes bring down.

Speaker 0

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 0

That was tricky.

Speaker 0

I love that one.

Speaker 0

We heard it was outside, so we got that much.

Speaker 0

Now it's time for the brain's honor roll.
