Hey.

Speaker 0

Welcome back to the Breaking Bad Insider podcast.

Speaker 0

My name is Dixon.

Speaker 0

We're here to talk about episode three ten, and it's called Fly.

Speaker 0

I'm here with my executive producer, Vince Gilligan.

Speaker 0

Greetings.

Speaker 0

I'm here with the star of our show, Brian Cranston.

Speaker 1

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 2

Visual gag for a podcast nicely started out.

Speaker 3

Works, you're sitting.

Speaker 3

Come on.

Speaker 0

The the director of this show, this episode is Ryan Johnson.

Speaker 0

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 0

And last but not least, our visual effects supervisor, Matt Beck.

Speaker 1

Howdy.

Speaker 3

耶。

Yay.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So it was funny because when I first was getting ready to do this episode, I got an email from our co executive producer, Michelle McLaren.

Speaker 0

In the email, she said, Ryan Johnson is your director, and so I just wanted to send you an email with his email address so you guys can just kinda get acquainted.

Speaker 0

So, you know, I I'm like, okay.

Speaker 0

It's like 10:30 at night.

Speaker 0

I just gotten home from work, and I said, okay.

Speaker 0

You know what?

Speaker 0

It's the day before he's gonna start shooting.

Speaker 0

I'll shoot him an email and, you know, I'll hear from him whenever.

Speaker 0

And so I emailed you in, like, you know, it's an hour later in Albuquerque, so it's 11:30 there.

Speaker 0

And I emailed you and said, hey, I'm Kelly Dixon, you know, good luck and, you know, we'll talk soon.

Speaker 0

And you emailed me within five minutes.

Speaker 3

Speaks to my social life in Albuquerque.

Speaker 3

就是

Was

Speaker 0

it's direct.

Speaker 0

Everyone's social life

Speaker 3

in Albuquerque.

Speaker 0

I was like thinking, why isn't he in bed?

Speaker 0

He should be in bed.

Speaker 0

He's supposed to be shooting tomorrow.

Speaker 0

So it was like really cool though and and so then finally, I think over that weekend I watched your movie Brick and I was like, oh my god.

Speaker 0

This guy is the right guy and it's such an amazing picture.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 0

And I loved it.

Speaker 0

And so now I understood what Vince was talking about because Vince is a huge fan of that movie too.

Speaker 0

没错。

Absolutely.

Speaker 0

So welcome, Ryan.

Speaker 0

It's been such a pleasure working with you and I'm so glad you could come in for the podcast.

Speaker 1

His follow-up movie Cinderblock was even better Yeah.

Speaker 1

I thought than

Speaker 2

Brick.

Speaker 2

它

It

Speaker 1

was brilliant.

Speaker 3

Try the real.

Speaker 2

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 2

What do you wanna talk about?

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

我们

Let's

Speaker 0

talk about Brick.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 3

就打算

Just gonna

Speaker 4

Let's talk about Brick.

Speaker 4

Brick is question.

Speaker 4

Brick is a movie that I saw at the Arc Light in Hollywood, and I don't even go to that many movies, first run anymore.

Speaker 4

And I'd read a review in the LA Times, and it sounded interesting.

Speaker 4

And I was meant to see this movie, I'm telling you, because I don't see that many movies, and I miss a lot of good ones, I'm sure.

Speaker 4

And this movie stuck with me, I'm telling you, because we I wanna hear a little bit I hear I want these folks to hear a little about Brick.

Speaker 4

Brick, if you have not heard of it, by all means, go rent it.

Speaker 4

Go put it in your Netflix queue.

Speaker 4

Buy it.

Speaker 4

I think it's take the risk.

Speaker 4

Buy it even before you rent it.

Speaker 4

It's great.

Speaker 4

And it's just a wonderful movie that you made for very little money in San Clemente

Speaker 3

San Clemente.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

Where you're you're not from there originally, but you you went to high school there?

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

We shot at my high school.

Speaker 2

So yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

Tell them a little about it.

Speaker 4

It's a great movie.

Speaker 4

It's hard to explain in a sense, which a lot most of the great movies are.

Speaker 4

Not explain, hard to describe in some sense.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Thanks, man.

Speaker 2

I really appreciate that.

Speaker 2

It it's, yeah, it's weird.

Speaker 2

It's hard to describe and make it sound good because the description of it is it's like it's kind of like a Dashiell Hammett detective story except set in a modern day high school and that sounds like the most annoying thing on the planet.

Speaker 4

And not Bugsy Malone.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

It plays it.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

But it's it plays it totally straight and it tries to just to be like it's kind of like a Miller's Crossing type feel except

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

With high school kids and a version of that that hopefully works for most people.

Speaker 2

So yeah.

Speaker 2

But I was I was when you and Melissa got in touch with me, was actually during the second season that you guys first touched base with me.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 2

I don't think I you guys sent me the DVDs, but I don't think the first season was even out on DVD yet when you got in touch with me because you're putting the second season together.

Speaker 2

对。

Right.

Speaker 2

对。

Right.

Speaker 2

And so that's how I first started watching the show is when you sent me the disc.

Speaker 2

And I I was I was really I wanted to do it.

Speaker 2

I couldn't do it because we were going into shoot or the second movie that we made, Brothers Bloom.

Speaker 2

And we but luckily, you guys got in touch with me for season three and two and season three.

Speaker 2

By that time, I had watched season two, and I was a huge fan of the show.

Speaker 2

And so I was so excited that you guys hadn't forgotten about me.

Speaker 3

而且它

And it

Speaker 2

brought me back in.

Speaker 2

It was it was really cool.

Speaker 4

No way we forget about you.

Speaker 4

By the and the other movie is Brothers Bloom.

Speaker 4

Another great movie, night and day different than Brick.

Speaker 4

Very often, a director or writer will will do, their movies will have a

Speaker 1

A similarity.

Speaker 1

Similarity.

Speaker 1

Like he works within his his wheelhouse, but the the those two films are really different, but equally entertaining, man.

Speaker 1

You're you're quite a talent.

Speaker 3

Thanks.

Speaker 3

当然。

Absolutely.

Speaker 0

You know what though?

Speaker 0

There is sort of a similarity to them though because in working with Ryan for, I guess, a week, we worked together very intensely in the editing room and it was such a pleasure.

Speaker 0

But the fun part was the two movies show how many moves you are ahead in your writing.

Speaker 0

I mean, Brick was about, you know, I mean, it it had definitely an noir style to it, but it's deep in its strategy, I guess.

Speaker 0

And so is the Brothers Bloom.

Speaker 0

It's a con game.

Speaker 0

So it just it's sort of like, I don't know, it sort of like a chess game where those really good chess players can deep you know, think 20 moves in and Yeah.

Speaker 0

That to me was the similarity between the movies.

Speaker 0

It's you know, because they are very different but just in showing how you write, it's it's, you know, quite amazing.

Speaker 3

确实。

A lot

Speaker 0

You can't wait until the next one.

Speaker 1

Third movie.

Speaker 1

Oh, Jesus.

Speaker 1

Everybody's anticipating

Speaker 3

Jesus fall off.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

That third one is coming.

Speaker 1

I was mentioning my

Speaker 0

That third one is coming though.

Speaker 0

It's coming.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

It's coming.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And you're tech avail.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

You're tech avail.

Speaker 1

I'm tech avail.

Speaker 1

Can cool cable cable

Speaker 3

cable cable cable cable cable

Speaker 2

Well, there's this slight there's kind of the similar thing.

Speaker 2

That's part of what I I think is so cool about the show is it's it's got the similar thing where, you know, with season two for example, the fact that you guys obviously knew where it's I mean, I I it was revealed to me actually, I didn't even catch the things with the show titles in season two that you exceeded flight, you know.

Speaker 2

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Ran down over Albuquerque Yes.

Speaker 2

Until Kelly told me about it actually.

Speaker 2

And I look back at it and I was like, oh my god.

Speaker 0

But you know what?

Speaker 0

I didn't know until Vince told me about it.

Speaker 4

I don't think anyway, she caught it.

Speaker 0

We didn't know it up here until he actually told us about it.

Speaker 4

And somebody caught it.

Speaker 4

I'm not aware.

Speaker 4

And God bless them if they did.

Speaker 0

They caught it over the Internet.

Speaker 0

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

They definitely caught it.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I I Way late.

Speaker 0

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

They caught it.

Speaker 0

But it was, like, probably around episode 11 or 12 where they caught it.

Speaker 0

And it was only because Okay.

Speaker 0

The titles got they got released, I guess, on IMDB and so somebody started putting it together.

Speaker 3

Oh, you didn't catch it.

Speaker 4

当时有

There was

Speaker 3

before that.

Speaker 0

It was towards the end there.

Speaker 0

But yeah, we were working on the show for six months before we really really knew.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Brian, how much do you, like, know in it, like, in terms of we like approaching the season?

Speaker 2

Is it really like episode to episode when you get the scripts or do you do you guys talk about like the bigger where the season's going?

Speaker 2

演员们

Actors

Speaker 3

too much information

Speaker 1

提前。

ahead of time.

Speaker 2

确实。

Is true.

Speaker 1

As you know, No.

Speaker 1

It's it's, for the actors, it's it's the same thing.

Speaker 1

We we have, about usually we we try to get about a week's notice before we start shooting and sometimes it's not quite that much.

Speaker 1

But we open up those scripts just like everybody anticipates the next episode airing.

Speaker 1

We read them cold and and here it goes and and we're very surprised what we see and and between us the cast says, well, how far are you?

Speaker 1

What put you on there now?

Speaker 1

And sometimes you you can't wait to get to it, you know, to figure out where and then tease the other cast members.

Speaker 1

Oh, you're not gonna

Speaker 4

believe what's going on with you.

Speaker 2

I'll miss you, man.

Speaker 1

I'll miss you.

Speaker 3

That's what

Speaker 1

we tease Aaron Paul all

Speaker 2

的。

the time.

Speaker 1

Brother's been great, man.

Speaker 0

This is it.

Speaker 1

He's always worried about getting fired all

Speaker 3

the Yeah.

Speaker 1

But it's great.

Speaker 1

And now so same question for you is that is that in television structurally the the directors are set months and months ahead of time before the scripts are even written.

Speaker 1

So it's just a crap shoot really to know what story, what script you're going to get.

Speaker 1

You know what slot you're in about what when you're working, but you don't know what the story line's gonna be.

Speaker 2

没有。

No.

Speaker 2

I didn't know until it was I think it was just a few weeks before that I got an early draft of it and was able to read it.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And I read because you guys sent me all the scripts up to 10 or somewhere outlines, think, being up till ten and then the outline for ten.

Speaker 2

And so I read in sequence as it felt like I was watching the series a little bit and then got to ten and read that.

Speaker 2

And then I purposefully stopped the scripts eleven and twelve, and I think maybe even I think just eleven and twelve were floating around the set while we were shooting, and I purposefully didn't touch them because I wanted

Speaker 1

sick of it by

Speaker 2

确实。

the way.

Speaker 2

I was so sick of it.

Speaker 2

I'm like, get me off of this.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

Now now just like the the fans after watching episode 10, they they must realize that that is unlike any other episode we've ever shot.

Speaker 1

So too, when you first got the script, it must must have

Speaker 2

是的。

It yeah.

Speaker 2

It really threw me for a loop, especially because I got the outline first.

Speaker 2

And in an outline form, it's even odder in a way because you don't have all the dialogue where you dig into the emotional stuff.

Speaker 2

It really just is like the skeletal kind of and so it it it it threw me a little bit when I first when I first read it.

Speaker 2

And when I first read it, I didn't quite I honestly didn't quite get it.

Speaker 2

It took me like a pass of

Speaker 1

Welcome to the club.

Speaker 1

Every every script

Speaker 2

we read we're going,

Speaker 1

what is Vince thinking?

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Come on.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Thinking about all those cool locations too.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 3

当然。

For sure.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Well, was the I was really excited about that.

Speaker 2

I mean, just the fact that, you know, I know there was something That's the one thing that I I From the very first moment I read it was genuinely excited about was how contained it was in that one location.

Speaker 2

So that meant that we could focus all our energy just on we weren't gonna spend time moving from location to location to location.

Speaker 2

We were gonna be still in one place and so we could really take the time to dig into a little more.

Speaker 2

And also the fact that, I mean, I was really on the one hand bummed that I wasn't gonna get to work with all the other actors in the cast who were fantastic.

Speaker 2

I got to meet them a little bit.

Speaker 2

Met got to hang out with Betsy and her husband a little bit and kind of meet the rest of the cast.

Speaker 2

But but there was there was a real appeal to just how concentrated it was to just be working with you and Erin and just, you know, to be able to focus everything on that.

Speaker 2

I don't know.

Speaker 2

It just it it it was an interesting challenge.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

From an act from an acting standpoint, it it after reading it, it just really felt like a two character play.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And that we we did have the time, unlike in most situations in in television, to to rehearse.

Speaker 1

We had time to rehearse and really think it through without the pressure of the crew being around at first so that we can filter through the beats of the entire play Yep.

Speaker 1

And then figure out what we wanted to say at any given time.

Speaker 2

Well, especially especially for that third I think it's the third act.

Speaker 2

The one there's that long that where you drink the coffee That's

Speaker 0

the third act.

Speaker 0

That's That's the last question too because I didn't realize this, Ryan, when I worked with you I didn't realize this.

Speaker 0

But I learned a couple of weeks ago that you and Aaron came in and you shot the third act in one shot.

Speaker 2

Oh, It was

Speaker 0

like a take where I just didn't know.

Speaker 0

This was incredible.

Speaker 0

You remember That you came in.

Speaker 0

This is what I heard.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Was that you guys came in and you said, let's just do it and you did it for

Speaker 2

one This is what happened.

Speaker 2

We we went, we spent it well, first of all, that that was like the big sequence where we said where we actually took like a few hours and really rehearsed it.

Speaker 2

And I forget if we even took it out of the shooting day or if we got together.

Speaker 2

I think we might have gone together after the shooting day.

Speaker 2

Yeah, took whole time.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Really got it down, was completely invaluable.

Speaker 2

But then we spent the entire day shooting it out and getting all our angles and everything.

Speaker 2

And then at the end of the day or maybe the next morning, I think Moira Moira

Speaker 3

Well, we're Robert Beckett and

Speaker 4

Sam Kaplan, who wrote this

Speaker 2

Wrote the incredible script for it.

Speaker 2

They I think Moira was on because Moira was on set and and she mentioned, well, the one thing we don't have is kind of like a big wide of everything.

Speaker 2

And so I said, okay, know what?

Speaker 2

We'll put the camera way up back in the corner and we'll just get do a pass through of it.

Speaker 2

And we and we brought it up to you guys in the morning and it was kind of like you you you had we had spent the entire day yesterday and you had already moved on to in your heads to the next day's things.

Speaker 2

You were like, you're kidding.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

Are we gonna mean but you were like, okay.

Speaker 2

You know what?

Speaker 2

We're gonna do it.

Speaker 2

We're just gonna go into it and just do it.

Speaker 2

So I said, I told the script supervisor, I said, make sure you're standing by because I'm sure they'll need some lines thrown to them.

Speaker 2

And so we just rolled the cameras, put a big mag on the cameras, we had enough film.

Speaker 2

We rolled it and I and so because the camera was set on this wide shot, it was just the two of you in an empty set with no crew at all in there.

Speaker 2

And you guys did one run through of it which was absolutely perfect and which I think was the

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Too bad that was just the rehearsal.

Speaker 3

We didn't Damn it.

Speaker 3

下一个

Next

Speaker 1

time we'll have film in the camera and we'll actually be

Speaker 2

Great.

Speaker 2

Let's roll on the next one.

Speaker 1

完美。

Perfect.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

That's what that's what was reminiscent of play like.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Whereas a play, you you get it into your being that you're you're going to run the same material again the next night.

Speaker 1

And you have to find little nuances and little differences.

Speaker 1

And the audience reaction helps you realize the difference is Right.

Speaker 1

From night to night.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

But in television and film, you don't have that process and you have you get accustomed to doing something, finishing it, and and your brain starts to exercise that muscle of wiping away what you just said because you have things for tomorrow that you need.

Speaker 1

And so it was questionable whether or not we're back in that system up in a theater like mode.

Speaker 1

But it was fun to do.

Speaker 1

And the process is always the most fun for actors, to be able to break something down and get together with the writers, the director, and the actors and together come up with that cohesiveness, you know?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's always a very delicate thing.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You don't know really where it's gonna be.

Speaker 3

Do you think do you think having wiped it clean though in in an effort to get ready for the next day, do you think it's possible it added a little bit of freshness to to it going coming back and revisiting it?

Speaker 1

Well, think I think when we first started the the episode, we we realized that it was it was like a play.

Speaker 1

So I and because we had the luxury of the rehearsals, I think it it something shifted in us to accept more of a block

Speaker 2

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

And thinking of things and more of beginning to end as opposed to fragmented pieces.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

You know, which in in in case the the listeners don't know is that we always shoot out of sequence in film and television.

Speaker 1

So we're in we're never shooting in the order that you're seeing the finished product in.

Speaker 0

But this one you guys didn't you shoot it?

Speaker 2

Not really.

Speaker 2

I mean, somewhat.

Speaker 2

More so than usual, I think.

Speaker 2

We to.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And there were chunks like that I think that chunk where we took the whole day and shot that that big sequence.

Speaker 2

I think that was mostly in order, but we still kind of hopped around.

Speaker 4

And and you in a perfect world, and on a movie, TV show, no matter what, you you would shoot in order, but it just the the the it's just it's impossible because there are so many scheduling issues or so many technical issues.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

That you you can never really do it.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Well, know, Brian, I I'm curious because this is one of my favorite episodes ever.

Speaker 0

And, I mean, I really, really enjoyed working on it and cutting it.

Speaker 0

But it's just there's so many levels to it.

Speaker 0

There's a comedy level to it, and then there's such the deep level, you know, to it about, you know, Walt's, you know, frustration.

Speaker 0

Walt's you know, Walt is carrying a lot on his shoulders at this point, but he's also carrying a lot of guilt.

Speaker 0

And I love the fact that I thought that they the writers, Sam and Moore, did such a wonderful job.

Speaker 0

I always talk talk to Vince, and I said, you know, this this show to me is about near misses.

Speaker 0

It's people are it's almost like ships in the night.

Speaker 0

They're just missing.

Speaker 0

And so I was wondering if you could talk a little bit about how how the arc of that episode went because at first, it's, you know, it's just funny.

Speaker 0

I mean, it's hilariously funny.

Speaker 0

Some of the things that you do are just, you know, I mean, you had us cracking up, literally cracking up all the time.

Speaker 0

It was never you know, it was always such a pleasure to watch it the whole thing through.

Speaker 0

Just keep watching it because it just goes through so many changes.

Speaker 0

So what was that like as an actor for you?

Speaker 1

Well, I think what Ryan was talking about is that at first you look at the at the script, try to look at it objectively and and I saw that it was contained.

Speaker 1

And at first you might think, oh, we feel like you're in a box.

Speaker 1

And then it becomes a challenge to be able to work within that.

Speaker 1

And sometimes it's it's more freeing to to say, alright, here's where I have to work in and now how can I make that interesting?

Speaker 1

And then when I look at a script, I I try to objectively find the places where there can be humor, especially in a show like this because I think the the the best dramas have a nice sprinkling of of levity to them.

Speaker 1

And conversely, so do the best comedies I have.

Speaker 1

They have some some moments of of sincerity and pathos to them.

Speaker 1

And but then once you start going, I mean, certainly Walter White has no idea that he's funny in any regard.

Speaker 1

正是

That's

Speaker 3

what makes him funny.

Speaker 1

And so there can't be any consciousness consciousness of of that, that, you you know.

Speaker 1

明白。

Know.

Speaker 1

So So that is something that you recognize and then you file away and then it becomes part of the the flow when you start rehearsing and and performing it.

Speaker 1

But I mean, I just love challenges.

Speaker 1

So it was it was it was fun to look at and and and to see.

Speaker 1

We we also just on a on a logistical basis, we we usually have eight days to shoot this an episode and we had seven days on this episode to shoot.

Speaker 1

And so We didn't have seven days?

Speaker 2

没有。

No.

Speaker 2

I thought it was No.

Speaker 1

I thought we had seven days.

Speaker 0

I thought it was eight We

Speaker 2

shot day day eight's shot without you.

Speaker 2

We had your

Speaker 1

Maybe so.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I thought it was eight seven days?

Speaker 1

Really?

Speaker 3

八天。

Eight days.

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

算了。

Never mind.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 3

Was eight From the co exec, you got eight days.

Speaker 1

Oh, I I I slept through one day.

Speaker 2

Eight days on the books.

Speaker 2

As far as Sony is concerned, we had eight days.

Speaker 3

不对。

No.

Speaker 3

I don't care.

Speaker 1

Don't No.

Speaker 1

But, you know, and and it it's You're

Speaker 2

having so much fun at first.

Speaker 1

I know.

Speaker 1

It just felt like it went so fast.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

Time flies when you're having fun.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

飞

Fly

Speaker 3

你。

you.

Speaker 3

哇。

Woah.

Speaker 4

Butter up up.

Speaker 4

链条。

Chain.

Speaker 1

Speaking of flies Yes.

Speaker 1

That was the thing that I was most curious about because they were we had some practical flies on the set, which means real flies, but we didn't really

Speaker 3

Well, they weren't real.

Speaker 3

They were little model flies.

Speaker 1

But didn't we have anything really like a fly?

Speaker 2

We had no real fly.

Speaker 2

No real fly.

Speaker 2

Know what?

Speaker 2

Of the PAs, I think, or somebody brought in, just on their own, a bag of dead flies.

Speaker 2

And I was like, oh, thought this might And we're like, where did you get them?

Speaker 2

Kind We of didn't wanna

Speaker 1

It's like an offering.

Speaker 3

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3

It's for having thought that lies for you.

Speaker 3

是的,

Yeah,

Speaker 2

with with the things we had, the physical flies we had were made by this guy in LA, I think, who Yeah.

Speaker 2

Michelle Pham.

Speaker 0

He was No.

Speaker 0

Mark props on

Speaker 3

对。

him.

Speaker 3

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 2

Oh, okay.

Speaker 2

They were amazing.

Speaker 2

He started out as a fly fisherman and was making his own, you know, flies.

Speaker 2

And then he transitioned into making them for the movie business.

Speaker 2

And there were these incredible, I mean, just the craftsmanship on them was amazing.

Speaker 2

These things showed up in the office and we're just blown away by them.

Speaker 2

I and there are and they are in the episode quite a bit.

Speaker 2

I'd say most of the times that you see a fly just like sitting there and it's it's probably one of these things.

Speaker 0

Not so much.

Speaker 0

Not so much.

Speaker 0

这个

This

Speaker 4

a good segue for you.

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

Here we go.

Speaker 4

回到

Back

Speaker 2

这里。

here.

Speaker 2

We'll talk.

Speaker 3

Well, it it it's it's interesting because it turned out.

Speaker 3

I mean, once we started making the flies that there there were moments.

Speaker 3

It's like the thing is that there are these tiny little movements that we ended up adding Right.

Speaker 3

That that made it much more credible.

Speaker 3

Because when the thing is, you know, you see a little glint, that fly had shiny wings, and sometimes you'd see a little glint and it wouldn't move at all.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

And after just, you know, even a second, you're thinking, yeah.

Speaker 3

It's not a real fault.

Speaker 2

Did you use the practical fly we had there as basically a tracking mark, erase it, and put in the digital one?

Speaker 3

Pretty much.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 2

Really?

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

See, haven't seen the at this point, I haven't seen the finished finished effects on the episode except for that one shot that you just showed me.

Speaker 2

So yeah.

Speaker 2

I got it.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

不错。

Cool.

Speaker 2

I can't wait.

Speaker 3

It was it but it was great.

Speaker 3

I mean, because it it was great having the real fly there.

Speaker 3

There were actually moments in which, you know, the the the super slow motion of it falling.

Speaker 3

对。

Right.

Speaker 3

That's that's that's the model fly doing its thing.

Speaker 2

Gotcha.

Speaker 3

But in many more instances than we originally thought Yeah.

Speaker 3

We we ended up replacing the stand in.

Speaker 4

And and then again, to be to be to be reinforced, not because the model itself wasn't wonderfully executed.

Speaker 4

This gentleman made a great model of a fly, but but but as as Matt just said, because a real fly is always doing a little twitching or something.

Speaker 4

So so you guys made it look that much more real by having that little bit of movement in there.

Speaker 1

You know, on the set, it was funny because we're we're you know, you're doing these scenes and you're acting and you have a lot of this emotional content that you're dealing with.

Speaker 1

And then and then Ryan would say, oh, okay.

Speaker 1

Now just everybody hold your positions and Matt, Matt, come on in.

Speaker 1

And and Matt comes on in and does some kind of voodoo.

Speaker 1

He's walking around taking pictures and and here, hold this and

Speaker 3

球体。

Orb.

Speaker 3

Take a

Speaker 1

There was like a globe that he was moving around and taking pictures with it and it's like, we're just kinda holding off.

Speaker 3

Holding it I was I was accepting the karmic energy.

Speaker 3

Oh, grace.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And I guess So we would pause for a second while Matt comes in and does that.

Speaker 1

He's like, okay.

Speaker 3

He's done?

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

谢谢,Matt。

Thanks, Matt.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Not really knowing, you know, what exactly is going on in the IT world.

Speaker 0

是的,Matt。

Yeah, Matt.

Speaker 0

Because I had never really done a big visual effects show.

Speaker 0

And so I was like, what the hell?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Because we get the dailies in and we get a performance, but then we get that with these balls.

Speaker 0

So can you just tell our I found out later what it was.

Speaker 0

But can you tell our audience what that is about?

Speaker 0

它

It

Speaker 3

looks like a ball.

Speaker 3

It's it's complete nonsense, and we just do it to make ourselves seem important.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right on.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

So now you

Speaker 3

know.

Speaker 3

Well, you know, the thing is you're gonna be putting something in the in in in the space that that isn't there.

Speaker 3

So we just have basically a shiny silver ball that you take a picture of and it makes a reflection.

Speaker 3

I'm waving my arms for those at home.

Speaker 3

But it makes a reflection that shows every single it shows the entire environment that something sitting there would be experiencing in terms of lighting.

Speaker 3

And then we do it with a gray diffuse ball that shows just kind of the way the the way light and shadow plays on it.

Speaker 3

And that's the first thing that we use when we light the the fly.

Speaker 3

Then, of course, having decided what's actually there, we go back and add some extra lighting on it so that you can see the goddamn thing.

Speaker 4

Well, now how big is this ball?

Speaker 4

It doesn't have to be the same size as the fly.

Speaker 4

Right?

Speaker 0

It's like a Christmas ball.

Speaker 3

Was balls were huge.

Speaker 3

很大。

Big.

Speaker 3

I beg your pardon?

Speaker 2

Sorry.

Speaker 2

Were there

Speaker 1

were several different sizes.

Speaker 1

There was one that was really reflective.

Speaker 4

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And it was about this big.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

About, you know, the

Speaker 0

size of volleyball.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And perhaps.

Speaker 1

And then there was a smaller one that was dull and that didn't have

Speaker 3

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

Reflective qualities.

Speaker 3

The the difference in size is kind of kind of by convenience.

Speaker 3

You know?

Speaker 3

They they they can be different sizes.

Speaker 3

When they get too small, it's hard to record all the information on them because it's a tiny image.

Speaker 3

So it needs to be big enough to kinda do it and small enough so that you're not hauling these gigantic things through customs or

Speaker 1

or The interesting thing is that when Matt when we had to take the the time out to have Matt come through on each scene that that the fly was in.

Speaker 4

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

We had to kinda pause and see what and nobody on the crew knew what he

Speaker 2

was doing.

Speaker 3

And we just got on the way and go, hey, Matt.

Speaker 3

You gone?

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

God.

Speaker 3

I know.

Speaker 3

Need to do with your balls and everything.

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's You know, it's not until the appreciation comes now.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

It's love you.

Speaker 1

Oh, that's what he did.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

那就是

That's

Speaker 3

where we love you.

Speaker 3

Ryan.

Speaker 3

The other thing that we were doing

Speaker 0

Oh, I'm sorry.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Just really quickly is we were kind of taking stills of the entire environment so that we were documenting what the environment looked like because there was a time later when we had to do a bunch of wire removals and that entailed replacing the environment behind the wire with something that looks like it was there at the time.

Speaker 3

And we actually had to CG, which means computer generate part of the ceiling because it was such a complicated Yeah.

Speaker 4

Tell them because this is the wonderful thing you guys do that you don't ever get any credit for from lay people because how would they know?

Speaker 4

But, I mean, tell them about the the that whole last sequence with Yeah.

Speaker 4

With Aaron up on the Jesse up on the ladder.

Speaker 0

Before you start, I just wanted to mention that also Aaron Paul could unfortunately, couldn't be with us today.

Speaker 0

He is on vacation.

Speaker 0

He's on somewhere on vacation.

Speaker 0

But he I was told that he did.

Speaker 0

He has a wire on when he goes up on that contraption with the ladder.

Speaker 0

And we were like going, holy cow.

Speaker 0

How many times did he fall?

Speaker 0

And I hear that he never fell.

Speaker 0

He never fell.

Speaker 0

I mean So why do we

Speaker 4

have to waste some money on the wire?

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 3

That's what I try

Speaker 0

to But just to let everybody know out there that he did have a wire and all of those there were actually a couple of wires in the shots that you see, and they all had to be removed by Matt and his crew.

Speaker 0

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

They were they were safety wires hooked on to him so that if he did fall, that he would be caught by the

Speaker 3

But he had to fight you as well too.

Speaker 3

Were you on the wrong side of the railing?

Speaker 1

When I was on the other side of the railing reaching for my shoe Yeah.

Speaker 1

I I had to wear a wire as well.

Speaker 2

Speaking of which, I haven't seen yet.

Speaker 2

It worked fine stitching it together with the fall.

Speaker 0

Oh, looks great.

Speaker 4

It looks oh, it's fantastic.

Speaker 0

By the way, just so a little peek behind the curtain so everybody knows, the the fall where Walt falls from the upper part of the lab onto that big vat and into the ground.

Speaker 0

That is a stunt, man.

Speaker 1

Oh, don't say that.

Speaker 0

And Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

But it it was it was design I guess you designed the shot to where the camera was basically it was just gonna be eventually one shot.

Speaker 0

It looked like it was one shot.

Speaker 0

And a stuntman fell and then got up and moved away.

Speaker 0

And Brian went and got in the position and then we move in close on on Walt Yeah.

Speaker 0

With the fly landing on his glasses.

Speaker 0

And I'll get you haven't seen it.

Speaker 0

It looks amazing.

Speaker 0

We were a little I was worried, but I I was like, look, Matt, see what you can you know, I knew you could do it, and it looks great.

Speaker 0

We saw it, you know, a couple weeks ago, you know, the final mix on it.

Speaker 0

It's amazing.

Speaker 0

就是

It's

Speaker 3

a pain.

Speaker 3

Also to watch.

Speaker 3

I I also wanna throw in a shout out just for the way it was put together between, like, rigging and stunts and stuff.

Speaker 3

When he was up on that ladder, you know, it just look you're looking at it, and it's like, woah.

Speaker 3

It looks so precarious.

Speaker 3

And, of course, you know, for most of the scenes, that ladder is bolted onto those roll around tables.

Speaker 0

Oh, you're talking about Aaron.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

I'm talking about Aaron.

Speaker 3

Well and just the way it was cut together, mean, I I know how it went together, and I'm still scared from every time he's up.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Me too.

Speaker 0

I just look so precarious.

Speaker 0

Honestly.

Speaker 1

And it was it was Ed Duran who who made that fall for me to as my stunt devil.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And he well, that that was harrowing because he hit that tank and it was with a we all just

Speaker 2

Well, we're all

Speaker 0

the way.

Speaker 0

Entire week leading

Speaker 2

up to it, he had described what he was gonna do.

Speaker 2

And we're all like, really?

Speaker 2

Are you sure?

Speaker 3

你

Are you

Speaker 2

sure you're gonna do it?

Speaker 2

And we're like, you know what?

Speaker 2

It must not be as bad as we're all thinking if he's actually gonna do it.

Speaker 2

And then it happened, he did it, and we're all just like, holy shit.

Speaker 2

It was it was worse than we had to, like, imagine.

Speaker 2

Then we like

Speaker 4

You live for nearly four days.

Speaker 3

确实。

It was.

Speaker 0

You know what you know what's funny too is when it came in, we watched it, and we listened.

Speaker 0

And I don't think well, I mean, I'm sure that sound effects has enhanced it for our mix, but you know what?

Speaker 0

I never we never did anything in the room to that fall.

Speaker 0

I mean, when he falls down and he lands on, I'm assuming it's cement, it's just as painful.

Speaker 0

I mean, you just cramp.

Speaker 1

The tank itself was immovable.

Speaker 1

It was it was bolted down so that it wouldn't

Speaker 2

slide out.

Speaker 2

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

So he hit that and bounced off of that onto the concrete floor,

Speaker 3

and we're

Speaker 1

like, oh my god.

Speaker 1

And he's saying, keep rolling.

Speaker 1

Keep rolling.

Speaker 1

And then I had to while they're still rolling, he got I saw his end position, and I had to go in and match his end position, and then do that.

Speaker 1

And then then you started to push it.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

Wait a minute.

Speaker 4

See, you didn't even cut the camera between?

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

没有。

No.

Speaker 0

明白了

Got

Speaker 2

he's got it wrong.

Speaker 2

We just had yeah.

Speaker 2

We had the stuck eye freeze, and we had Brian clock, like, where he was at.

Speaker 1

Just figure out where he is and exactly He ran in.

Speaker 1

位置

Position

Speaker 3

it was.

Speaker 4

And we didn't use a video switcher or anything?

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Well, Dave Stump, who was there on the day, was supervising on that day, he did a quick comp.

Speaker 3

Did a little check and knew it was gonna work.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

And you could tell already that it was

Speaker 1

gonna go together well.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It was And really then, you know, when then, you know, we showed Matt and I said, here's what we'd like.

Speaker 0

And, you know, then you guys, your crew went together and and did it.

Speaker 0

And I was like, wow.

Speaker 0

I knew though.

Speaker 0

I knew it was gonna look great.

Speaker 0

But I was just like, it's gonna look good.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

But it looks so fantastic.

Speaker 4

I I've watched it a 100 times.

Speaker 4

I cannot tell the frame.

Speaker 4

You know, there's at a certain point, there's one frame that's the stuntman ad, and then at the next frame, moving 24 frames a second, is is Brian.

Speaker 3

Mhmm.

Speaker 4

And I cannot I can't tell

Speaker 3

where it happens.

Speaker 3

I cannot tell happens.

Speaker 3

We actually went in there and kind of, you know, bent our arms around and legs and stuff like that to make the bodies line up,

Speaker 1

and we did it

Speaker 3

over a number frame.

Speaker 1

So there

Speaker 3

is no one frame.

Speaker 4

Oh, there is no one frame.

Speaker 4

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 4

Gotcha.

Speaker 0

You have you and Vince have a history, though.

Speaker 0

Like, you were on the XPOS together.

Speaker 0

Correct?

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

It's it's it's it's actually been out there.

Speaker 3

Let's back up on it.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Tell us

Speaker 2

about these X Files.

Speaker 3

Is it so wrong?

Speaker 3

Well,

Speaker 4

now it was Matt, because I first met you when I was doing the x files, and you were you were there before I was.

Speaker 4

You were the visual effects producer or supervisor.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

What's the official title?

Speaker 4

I keep messing around.

Speaker 3

Well, it it's it's it's producer and supervisor.

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 4

Visual effects producer supervisor.

Speaker 4

And one of the first things you you helped me out in my home state of Virginia.

Speaker 3

I remember that.

Speaker 4

对。

Yes.

Speaker 4

I wrote an episode called Pusher.

Speaker 4

是的。

And Yes.

Speaker 4

And it was one of my first episodes.

Speaker 4

And in the script, it takes place in Loudoun County, Virginia, which is up just outside of DC.

Speaker 4

And it was spelled right in the script, but between the script and the no offense to the wonderful folks in the art department, but the Loudoun County Courthouse was spelled they dropped a u from the spelling of of this real of this very real

Speaker 1

法院?

Of courthouse?

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

是不是

Is it

Speaker 3

Oh, boo boo.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

It's courthose.

Speaker 3

法院。

Courthose.

Speaker 3

法院。

Courthose.

Speaker 4

It wasn't court.

Speaker 4

I could've gone with that.

Speaker 4

That would've been alright.

Speaker 4

But I didn't wanna be embarrassed in my home state, and God bless Chris Carter and Fox for letting us spend the money to do it.

Speaker 4

And you took this this giant Loudoun County and you spelled it correctly.

Speaker 4

I don't know still this day how you did it, but it was like a magic trick.

Speaker 4

You did it using CG and I mean, right?

Speaker 3

It actually I mean, this was long enough ago that we didn't have all the tools that we have now.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

But it it was actually it it wasn't too terribly hard to do.

Speaker 3

We basically Wow.

Speaker 3

But what was it was cool about it is like it's like I remember thinking, I like this guy because you were so appreciative.

Speaker 3

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

And and it was like it's like it was so nice to do because it wasn't a terribly difficult trick, I'll be honest with you.

Speaker 3

But it was like it it was it was so cool that you were

Speaker 1

What would something like that cost?

Speaker 1

To go I mean I mean, let's let's get behind the curtain again.

Speaker 1

I mean

Speaker 0

In those $19.95 dollars, might too.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Well,

Speaker 3

你知道

you know

Speaker 1

what that cost you?

Speaker 3

I make special deals for you like that.

Speaker 3

You know, I I don't remember, and I don't remember how long it took.

Speaker 3

But in those days, we we went into basically a bay and just sat there and worked on it until it went right.

Speaker 3

And in those days the cost was somewhere around 500 or $600 an hour think.

Speaker 2

What was the machine on that?

Speaker 2

That was a flame?

Speaker 3

That was a flame, yeah.

Speaker 3

And flames are still in use.

Speaker 3

And I think, I'm trying to remember, but I think we stole a ewe from someplace else.

Speaker 3

Just of Corporates, cracked it in course.

Speaker 3

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3

Thank you.

Speaker 3

我

I

Speaker 1

don't know where we got it.

Speaker 1

So it cost about $66 or something?

Speaker 3

I'm I'm it was it was it was less than that.

Speaker 3

It was less than that because it went together pretty quickly.

Speaker 3

But, you know, the in because the tools have gotten so much more powerful over the years, you wouldn't pay that now to make that change.

Speaker 3

It would be less than that.

Speaker 4

But this is described for the folks what a flame look.

Speaker 4

It's just basically if you were to see one and didn't know what it was, you think it was a computer.

Speaker 0

It's just computer.

Speaker 4

It is a computer.

Speaker 4

Well, duh.
