We're talking about episode four eleven, which is called

Speaker 1

Crawl Space.

Speaker 0

Crawl Space.

Speaker 0

Oh, cool.

Speaker 0

My name is Kelly Dixon.

And Sam Catlin, writer Sam Catlin, writer George Mastress, actor Bob Odenkirk plays Saul

Speaker 2

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 0

Speaker 0

Speaker 3

你好。

Hello.

Speaker 0

And our music composer, Dave Porter.

Speaker 0

Hi.

Speaker 0

Thanks you guys for coming.

Speaker 0

Hey.

Speaker 0

You know what?

Speaker 0

I'm gonna rush a little bit this in the beginning because Bob Odenkirk has to leave us.

Speaker 0

So I just wanna jump right in, Vincent.

Speaker 0

Let's talk a little bit to Bob about these these great scenes that our writers wrote for for Bob this this episode.

Speaker 0

Because now Walt has to Walt has decided

Speaker 2

Finally, the show is coming around.

Speaker 2

Finally, the season is finding its feet.

Speaker 2

Four eleven.

Speaker 0

No, Walt has basically said now that he needs to use the disappearer.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

We're jumping to the last scene first here.

Speaker 2

Who was mentioned earlier.

Speaker 2

In an earlier scene.

Speaker 0

Right, episode zero four.

Speaker 1

Episode four zero four, there's that big scene which funnily enough, we we when we came up guys, back me up here.

Speaker 1

When we came up with this idea of a disappear for for this episode 11, when we're talking in advance of it saying we we, you know, at certain point, Walt should check out here.

Speaker 1

We realized at that late later date, we should probably would have been best to have spoken of it on camera earlier in the year.

Speaker 1

So luckily, episode four directed by Colin Buxi, written by Moira Moira Wally Beckett was a little was still finishing up, and it was a little short running time wise.

Speaker 1

So Moira wrote a scene, an addendum to the scene where where Bob, where you and Brian are talking.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And we added in you guys at a later date.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Shot shot that scene.

Speaker 2

Just watched that, I don't know, a week or two ago, and my wife was like, what was that about?

Speaker 2

She totally noticed it.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Totally noticed it was a different

Speaker 2

Just a conversation about this guy, because at that point, nothing happens.

Speaker 2

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

So you see that moment of, you know, in episode four when you if you really, seriously, gotta get out of here.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I do know a guy who can make it disappear.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's it's expensive, there's no coming back, but Right.

Speaker 1

File it away for later for a later date.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

That scene was written after the fact and and you guys went in and shot that additional, I don't know, twenty, thirty seconds of dialogue Yeah.

Speaker 1

Which plugged in very nicely, I must say, to the pre existing footage in that scene.

Speaker 0

I don't

Speaker 2

know who directed it.

Speaker 0

Did Michelle you Michelle Michelle McLaren.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

She just set it up exactly Yeah.

Speaker 2

And who directed the earlier episode?

Speaker 1

Colin Buxi.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Because his camera angles were amazing in that scene too with Yeah.

Speaker 2

Brian in the foreground and me way in the back Yeah.

Speaker 2

During my yammering speech was really good.

Speaker 2

Just that you guys stick with that and don't be cutting around all the time is

Speaker 1

great.

Speaker 1

Oh, you know what you're thinking of?

Speaker 1

I think you're thinking of the scene and or maybe it's not You know what

Speaker 2

I'm talking about?

Speaker 2

Where I'm out of focus talking for a long time.

Speaker 1

And Walt's in the foreground?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You know what that is?

Speaker 1

That was Peter Gould in episode seven.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That's not it.

Speaker 2

That's great

Speaker 1

That's where they were just holding that shot for like thirty, forty seconds.

Speaker 1

You know, we're lucky every single one of our directors does a great job.

Speaker 1

Well done.

Speaker 1

And then we'll get the last two, that was me.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Oh, boy.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 0

But I mean so now, basically, Saul, you know, he's he's kind of realizing that it's, like, getting a little tight.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

It seems to a little

Speaker 2

Saul

Things have been getting tight for Saul, and so I don't like it.

Speaker 2

I like

Speaker 0

Because now you

Speaker 2

you like That's not what the show's about.

Speaker 2

I'm not supposed to be in trouble.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Because you have to now be, you know, consolier to, Jesse and Walt.

Speaker 0

And now Skyler's

Speaker 2

And Skyler too.

Speaker 2

Who's not an easy, client.

Speaker 3

Not his

Speaker 2

favorite client.

Speaker 2

He likes people who do what he asks and don't argue with him all the time.

Speaker 0

But guys, Sam and George, you know, the vacuum cleaner salesman guy who you know, the card.

Speaker 0

How did that come about?

Speaker 0

Whose idea was that?

Speaker 0

还有

And

Speaker 4

I I I remember the whole idea of the the well, the whole idea of the disappear.

Speaker 4

I think I I remember reading an article or something and, like, one of the I was in an airplane or something about one of these people that actually exist.

Speaker 4

So they do actually exist.

Speaker 4

These people, you can pay them a bunch of money, they'll completely disappear you off the face of the Earth.

Speaker 4

And a lot of them are sort of people that, like, started out as, you know, finding missing persons, and they reverse it, and they become the kind of people who make you disappear.

Speaker 4

And, you know, the vacuum cleaner repair thing, I just put on there because I figured if someone's gonna have this kind of business, you're not gonna you're not gonna hang a shingle and advertise you to disappear because people are disappearing, usually doing it for good reason.

Speaker 4

So whoever's gonna find them is gonna, you know, torture it out of them where they disappeared to.

Speaker 4

So, you know, that was sort of the idea that it would be something just an anonymous number and then, you know, or something that's completely, you know, seems innocuous.

Speaker 4

但是

But

Speaker 0

Well, I love the you know, when when they finally go over when the guys finally go over to Ted Benicke's.

Speaker 0

You know, Saul has basically sent, you know, his guys

Speaker 1

his a team.

Speaker 1

You've sent your a team.

Speaker 2

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 2

My love my a team.

Speaker 2

I'm surprised that Saul thinks they're the a team.

Speaker 2

But I guess in Albuquerque, that's the best she can get.

Speaker 2

It's it's division three a team.

Speaker 1

And it's and it's and it's Huel and it's Koobie.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And the two stand up comics play those parts.

Speaker 2

Two very good stand up comics.

Speaker 2

比利

Billy

Speaker 0

Burr.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And Lavelle Crawford.

Speaker 1

Lavelle Crawford.

Speaker 2

Both really funny guys.

Speaker 2

Now In their stand up acts.

Speaker 1

And being in the comedy being have certainly having a great experience in the comedy world yourself, had you had you known these guys before you met them on the set of Breaking Bad?

Speaker 2

I'd probably met Billy once before, and I'd certainly seen him and heard about him.

Speaker 2

And LaVelle, I'd seen on Last Comic Standing.

Speaker 2

对。

Okay.

Speaker 2

And I thought he was great there.

Speaker 2

I really liked him.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

He's great.

Speaker 2

I mean, they're they're both really did you see Billy Burr on Letterman, like, last week?

Speaker 3

Not last week.

Speaker 2

Man.

Speaker 2

Killed it.

Speaker 2

Killed it.

Speaker 2

He Great set.

Speaker 2

Great.

Speaker 1

He's fantastic.

Speaker 1

He's so good.

Speaker 1

We we George and Sam will back me up.

Speaker 1

When when we're at a at a a sticking point story wise in the writers room, I'll invariably say, alright.

Speaker 1

打开YouTube。

Pull up YouTube.

Speaker 1

Pull up Bill Burr on YouTube, and then we'll just sit there and just just laugh my ass off.

Speaker 1

He is so damn funny.

Speaker 1

他,他

He's he's

Speaker 2

very good.

Speaker 2

So, you know, I I know I've never worked with them or anything, but, you know, just known them and watched them and knew about them.

Speaker 2

But they did a great job.

Speaker 2

I mean, I haven't seen their scenes with Benicke.

Speaker 1

It's great.

Speaker 1

It's great.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Because at this point, you haven't seen, like with the last weeks of episode 10, you guys were a little bit at a disadvantage.

Speaker 1

We record these before you you guys you Yeah.

Speaker 1

I haven't the episodes.

Speaker 1

Episodes.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But they their scene came out great.

Speaker 1

It is really it's really, really funny.

Speaker 1

And and Christopher Cousins, who plays Ted Beneke, does a great job and a great stuntman was involved in that.

Speaker 0

Oh, I thought he did it himself.

Speaker 0

不是。

No.

Speaker 4

我只是

I'm just

Speaker 1

kidding.

Speaker 1

He did he did some of it himself, but the actual sliding and whamming of the head is

Speaker 2

How do you make that a stunt?

Speaker 2

What do you do to

Speaker 1

You just hire a lot of stunt men, and they do each one does one take.

Speaker 1

And then there's I how how did they do that?

Speaker 1

Were you guys there?

Speaker 2

Is there a way to hit your head into a wall?

Speaker 2

How how did they

Speaker 1

那里

do There

Speaker 4

was a big pad there that you know, because it's it's angled such that you can't see the actual impact.

Speaker 4

对。

Right.

Speaker 4

That's true.

Speaker 4

I mean, I I think we have a shot where it is angled where you see the impact.

Speaker 4

But when he really wanted to hit it hard because, you know, you really had to sell it, there was a pad there.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

And the stuntman, you know, he hit it pretty hard.

Speaker 4

But I guess But

Speaker 2

there's there's no way That's what they did.

Speaker 2

There's no way to do that safely.

Speaker 2

I don't know.

Speaker 2

Whatever.

Speaker 1

I think it's I think it is safely done.

Speaker 1

These guys are real professional, and I think they know at the end of the day, it's a really good TV show, but it's only a TV show.

Speaker 1

No reason to get crippled doing a TV show.

Speaker 1

And they they make it, that's their job, I guess, to make it look like it's dangerous.

Speaker 4

He took a few takes because the stuntman wanted to sell it.

Speaker 4

You know, he was like, okay.

Speaker 4

You know, I wanna really go for it this time.

Speaker 4

Really go for it.

Speaker 4

And so he put a lot into it and

Speaker 2

Was he speaking clearly by the end?

Speaker 2

I knew it on the role play.

Speaker 4

So it's just kinda their mentality.

Speaker 4

They just wanna

Speaker 2

go along.

Speaker 2

You're losing language.

Speaker 2

That's okay.

Speaker 2

It's okay.

Speaker 2

I don't use it.

Speaker 0

Well, we should also mention that this was directed by Scott Wynette.

Speaker 1

Scott Wynette.

Speaker 0

Did an episode for us last year, the episode where Walt comes in and throws the plant into Ted Benicki's Yeah.

Speaker 0

Window and then has a fit in the office and has to get carried out by and then has and it has a fight with Saul.

Speaker 1

Sam that Sam wrote.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

He has a big fight with Saul in the office.

Speaker 2

Right?

Speaker 2

Well, yeah.

Speaker 2

I mean, that is, for me, getting to have a big fight with Brian in character is super cool and something that you wanna be there for and and bring everything to the table.

Speaker 2

You know what I mean?

Speaker 2

Because he's so good.

Speaker 0

Because he dragged you over

Speaker 5

the desk.

Speaker 2

Time I have moments like that with these guys.

Speaker 2

You know?

Speaker 2

That's where you wanna that's where this is like such a new thing to me and and a challenge and exciting if it feels like we get it.

Speaker 2

You know what I mean?

Speaker 2

I actually feel like I didn't get that one scene.

Speaker 2

We didn't talk about this, but there's an earlier scene with you in the car.

Speaker 2

I told you what a bad day I had that day.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That was there.

Speaker 2

In the car.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

I thought you were great.

Speaker 2

I told you why.

Speaker 2

I I haven't seen it.

Speaker 2

I know it's played.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That's probably why I didn't watch the

Speaker 1

other Oh, this scene is great, man.

Speaker 3

不。

No.

Speaker 3

You were great.

Speaker 1

Did you feel what did you feel this was the scene where you deliver the money, where Saul delivers the weekly money to Andrea.

Speaker 2

So there I'm trying to do the scene and having a hard time doing it and very self conscious, which is terrible.

Speaker 2

You shouldn't be, you know, when you're acting.

Speaker 2

You can't be that.

Speaker 2

Whatever.

Speaker 2

I hope I got through it.

Speaker 1

Listen, man.

Speaker 1

You're a trooper and

Speaker 2

you're But no, it's a scene I remember because, you know, anytime I'm opposite Aaron or Brian and they're and especially if there's some, like, strong emotions involved, which usually there are, but not always with Saul because sometimes Saul is just, he's like playing a game, you know, he's like trying to move the pieces around to his own advantage, but to whoever his client is.

Speaker 2

And it's a kind of a, I almost think it's fun for Saul.

Speaker 2

And it's fun to play with high stakes, you know?

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I think he he's energized

Speaker 1

by it.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

To me Even

Speaker 2

though there's danger, even though the client's in danger or sometimes he's in danger or maybe could eventually be in danger.

Speaker 2

I mean, he's getting more stuck in the mire here as the season goes.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

确实。

Definitely.

Speaker 2

But mired in the muck.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

I mean, so a lot of Saul's scenes over the years are just that kind of fun.

Speaker 2

He's having a good time, you know, playing this game.

Speaker 2

He likes doing it.

Speaker 2

But then these scenes that are where he's got his back to the wall, he his own stakes are going up for him.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

You know, and and then these guys are so such strong performers and it's a real challenge.

Speaker 2

It's a real exciting and daunting, but great because, you know, look, I'm 48 years old.

Speaker 2

I've been doing this a long time.

Speaker 2

I've been doing comedy a long time, and it's really fun to do, and I'm not that fazed by it.

Speaker 2

I can sort of tune in pretty quick to what needs to be done.

Speaker 2

So this is a new area for me and that's really cool to get to do when you after years of doing something, know, is to try something new and you know, that you guys are appreciate it and feel that I'm not ruining

Speaker 3

Oh, you're so great.

Speaker 0

No way.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Are you kidding?

Speaker 2

你看。

Look.

Speaker 2

Believe me.

Speaker 2

That's what I'm thinking is, like, I don't wanna wreck this great thing that all these people have built up with all their hard work and talents.

Speaker 2

So it's really wonderful to focus my efforts and you know work hard and feel like I could fit in and not break this beautiful thing you're building.

Speaker 2

Man.

Speaker 2

我们

We're

Speaker 1

lucky to have you the

Speaker 3

你知道

You know

Speaker 2

what mean?

Speaker 2

So then a scene with Brian, you know, like this scene, I just focused completely on it and and hope that I can do it.

Speaker 2

This felt good.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Now this one, as opposed to the scene with you where I felt like, oh, god.

Speaker 2

It's so I can't get this and all these people are watching.

Speaker 2

These great actors are standing sitting next to me and I'm flub flubbing my way through this.

Speaker 2

Nothing harder than doing one line in a scene Yeah.

Speaker 2

That has any kind of emotion to it.

Speaker 2

That's the worst Yeah.

Speaker 2

That's the hardest That's the hardest But when you have room to move and find your way

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That's very helpful.

Speaker 1

That's interesting.

Speaker 1

I didn't I didn't realize that.

Speaker 2

Oh, it's the hardest thing.

Speaker 2

I've I've had that a few times and it's it's hell.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Because you gotta be there right at a 100 miles an hour.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Gotta be there for that line and do it just right and have the timing.

Speaker 2

You have no you have no power over the timing of the scene.

Speaker 2

Everybody else does.

Speaker 1

所以

So

Speaker 2

when you're talking and you have a longer weigh in, everything about it works for you.

Speaker 1

You get to control the timing and that's

Speaker 2

Yeah, you're a big part of it, Yeah.

Speaker 2

About setting the pace and and you also can emotionally find your way to the place.

Speaker 2

You have a bunch of ways in.

Speaker 2

Gotcha.

Speaker 2

但是

But

Speaker 4

So we should write that really long dialogue scenes.

Speaker 2

I'm not look.

Speaker 2

The fact that people seem to like that Pages

Speaker 3

and pages

Speaker 4

of stuff.

Speaker 2

Is a reason to do it, but then also yeah.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

I love it.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

It's great.

Speaker 2

So that this was a really this felt good.

Speaker 2

This felt like I got it.

Speaker 2

You nailed

Speaker 1

没错。

it.

Speaker 1

You nailed in the last week's episode too.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

You just feel like you did it, which you did.

Speaker 0

You did.

Speaker 0

It was great.

Speaker 1

It's great.

Speaker 0

So we would never let you crash the plane.

Speaker 2

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 2

很好。

Good.

Speaker 2

Thank you.

Speaker 2

Thank you.

Speaker 1

Would never

Speaker 3

让你

let you

Speaker 5

crash the plane.

Speaker 2

Really felt good and fun to do.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

酷。

Cool.

Speaker 1

God bless you, man.

Speaker 1

Thank you.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

Well, we know what you got.

Speaker 1

I'm gonna get you go go hang out with your son.

Speaker 1

Have a have a great day with your son.

Speaker 1

Please tell my sister.

Speaker 1

Thank you, Bob.

Speaker 1

Thank you so much, Bob.

Speaker 0

Thank you,

Speaker 1

Thanks, man.

Speaker 0

So, you know, it's great to have Bob, you know, here to talk about that story, but let's, like, jump back to the first part of the

Speaker 1

Well, let's say one last thing about about all that.

Speaker 1

Do we think what do what do we think actually happened to Ted Beneke?

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 1

I don't know either.

Speaker 0

You you what what happened, guys?

Speaker 5

All I can say is

Speaker 1

Is he alive or is he dead?

Speaker 5

That talking about that scene, we pitched that and repitched that scene over and over again just because we thought it was so funny.

Speaker 0

And what?

Speaker 0

Vince said no?

Speaker 0

Is that what the deal is?

Speaker 5

不是。

No.

Speaker 5

We just thought it was funny.

Speaker 0

所以我

So I

Speaker 1

had to go

Speaker 4

to wake

Speaker 1

me up.

Speaker 1

They not

Speaker 3

hot off.

Speaker 5

Just talked about the clear liquid coming out of his ears and his fingers fluttering.

Speaker 0

I like that.

Speaker 0

And I like the oranges falling too.

Speaker 0

I like the oranges falling.

Speaker 1

That was a good touch.

Speaker 1

Was that in the script, the oranges falling, or was that Scott Wynette?

Speaker 1

那个

That

Speaker 5

was I was in there.

Speaker 1

That was in there?

Speaker 0

That was I like that part about, are you gonna make you Huel happy?

Speaker 0

让Huel开心。

Make Huel happy.

Speaker 0

Huel,

Huel, are you happy?

Speaker 3

Raise somebody?

Speaker 1

What makes you unhappy?

Speaker 1

This this little moltfall not done when he stole?

Speaker 0

I did wanna jump back to the very beginning because, you know, last we saw our you know, these guys, they were pulling out of Donaladio's in a rush.

Speaker 0

Jesse's driving the car.

Speaker 0

Gus is, you know, on his last legs.

Speaker 0

Mike has been shot.

Speaker 0

So we start in where basically you've got, you know, sort of a montage y feeling where you've got a surgery center, and we don't know what's going on.

Speaker 0

And then these guys rush in.

Speaker 0

Jesse brings Gus I guess they rush in.

Speaker 0

They get Gus, but then Jesse is, you know, bringing Mike in.

Speaker 0

And I don't know how you manage that.

Speaker 2

But Were you were

Speaker 1

you really how was that fun driving that caddy in there?

Speaker 1

You really smoking it in?

Speaker 3

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 3

I was flying down that dirt desert road.

Speaker 1

And you can see the wheels lock up when you slide it in there.

Speaker 3

Oh, it was so fun.

Speaker 1

That was fun?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

How many takes of that?

Speaker 3

Actually, quite a bit.

Speaker 3

Five, six, something

Speaker 2

like that.

Speaker 0

Aren't you glad you don't have to drive the RV anymore, though?

Speaker 3

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 3

I hated driving that thing.

Speaker 3

Because the wind, it was just so so sensitive to the wind.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

就像

Like a

Speaker 1

like a giant billboard, like, riding down

Speaker 3

一样。

the road or something.

Speaker 3

Mean, it was just, like, going left, right, like, just swaying.

Speaker 3

You feel like you're just gonna get blown up.

Speaker 3

I'm just a horrible driver, I guess.

Speaker 3

But it's not like you're gonna

Speaker 1

get blown up for a while.

Speaker 1

Shouldn't put

Speaker 5

a parallel parking scene in for

Speaker 2

给你。

you.

Speaker 2

那

That

Speaker 3

would be great.

Speaker 3

所以

So

Speaker 0

but you know what?

Speaker 0

I wanna also bring up you know, because we start this thing, and it's it's kind of like there's a lot of there's a lot of your music in the beginning of that, you know, where you kinda start a mood, don't you?

Speaker 6

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

There's a lot of music in the teaser as I we usually do have a lot of score in the teaser.

Speaker 6

But in this case, we just like the action, picked up right where we left off the episode before.

Speaker 6

对。

Right.

Speaker 6

So it's actually an extension of the same cue, same piece of music.

Speaker 6

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 6

And takes us into the the hospital scene, which I love.

Speaker 6

Actually, one of my things about this episode is that because it just seems so unexpected.

Speaker 0

And it looks so different too.

Speaker 0

It's just so white and just bright and, like, you know, the color is just so different from Don Eladio's where we just were, and it's, like, sun baked.

Speaker 0

Now it's this, you know but the other thing too, I I know we've mentioned before in the podcast, but, I don't know if we've mentioned it this season, Dave.

Speaker 0

You're one of the few people, if not I don't know.

Speaker 0

Maybe one of the only people in our crew, you know, who basically does not watch the episode until or you don't read the scripts.

Speaker 5

没错。

It's true.

Speaker 0

You you wait until we send you the episode.

Speaker 0

And then and so what you know, when you when you, you know, saw what happened at the end of 04:10, you know, and you're anxiously waiting for 04:11.

Speaker 0

How long is the space, by the way, between when we send you you know, is it is it about what, a week or two weeks or something between when you get to see the episodes?

Speaker 6

Know, it's every week.

Speaker 6

Mean, I'm I'm moving.

Speaker 6

It's it's I'm seeing an episode every week just like someone would at home actually.

Speaker 0

And then how long do you usually get to turn over cues when you have to start giving Vince cues to improve?

Speaker 6

Three or four days.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 3

Usually.

Speaker 3

所以,

So,

Speaker 6

yeah, when we're really moving, we're really moving.

Speaker 1

Plus plus you're a new dad.

Speaker 6

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 6

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 6

So only am not sleeping thank you.

Speaker 6

Not only was I not sleeping from work reasons, I wasn't sleeping anyway, so it all it all worked out.

Speaker 6

但是

But

Speaker 0

So when you saw this one and

Speaker 6

you're like, you don't know what's happening.

Speaker 6

不。

No.

Speaker 6

I have no idea what's going on.

Speaker 6

And the reason I do that, by way, is not because I'm lazy or I don't have enormous respect for our writers.

Speaker 6

I I do.

Speaker 6

And but but I I I take a lot from the visceral reaction that I have when I first watch it, because I'm very fortunate to be the last part of the puzzle usually.

Speaker 6

And so the episodes are already amazing when I see them.

Speaker 6

I mean, they're done.

Speaker 6

They're they're practically fully formed.

Speaker 6

So the the the version that I get to see is not dramatically different from what people see when they watch it at all.

Speaker 0

Except for it has music.

Speaker 6

Except for the set Quite dramatically.

Speaker 6

Well, yes.

Speaker 6

But but I wanna have that same reaction that I think the audience is gonna have because that's a lot of what score does in TV shows, either heightened or or or push action or dramatic moments or or whatever.

Speaker 6

But it helps me, not to sound corny, I I sort of hear a little bit what what I'm gonna do even when I watch it the first time.

Speaker 1

Really?

Speaker 1

你看

You see

Speaker 6

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Do you hear the music in your head?

Speaker 6

It's not it's not even the the music precisely, but it's it's a quality.

Speaker 6

It's a it's an emotion.

Speaker 6

It's a quality.

Speaker 6

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

And so when I saw this first scene in the teaser, because I had been spending that whole week working on the previous episode, I instantly knew that it was the same.

Speaker 6

It was a continuation of the drive and the crazy And it's such a great, like, long sweeping shot of you driving up in the in the caddy and then pulling Mike with the blood squirting out of his boots and everything.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

I mean, you do such a phenomenal job each and every week.

Speaker 3

是的。

It's Yeah.

Speaker 3

It's incredible.

Speaker 3

确实。

True.

Speaker 1

I had two things.

Speaker 1

I think it's a real smart thing to wait and see the edited episode instead of reading the script because very often there'll be scenes that that we love in the script stage that don't make it into the final edit for time reasons.

Speaker 1

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

So it's better it's better to see what you actually have versus what you will potentially have by reading the script because you you you come into it very in a very in a very pure state.

Speaker 1

It's whatever it is, it's there or it's not there.

Speaker 1

And that's what you are responding to on your on your visceral level and

Speaker 4

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

And you're not thinking back to or you're not thinking when you read the script, oh, man.

Speaker 1

I know what to do with this great scene.

Speaker 1

等等。

And wait a minute.

Speaker 1

Where the hell is it when you're watching it?

Speaker 6

对。

Right.

Speaker 6

Or this used to be this way, but because when you got shot at, you had to do something different.

Speaker 6

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

It changed into something else.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

Sometimes we'll change

Speaker 6

it hung up on some older version or some older idea that's no longer part of the show.

Speaker 1

Good point.

Speaker 0

So I'm oh, I'm sorry, Vince.

Speaker 1

Go ahead.

Speaker 1

不。

No.

Speaker 1

Just one last question about your process because I I didn't realize so much of this.

Speaker 1

Because I I sometimes hear dialogue in my head and I start typing it.

Speaker 1

So I I actually, I'm glad you brought this up.

Speaker 1

So you don't quite hear music in your head, but you kinda and then also, do you hear it clear or whatever it is that occurs to you, is it is readily apparent which scenes should have music and then which scenes how did what goes into picking which scenes have music and which scenes stay as we call dry without music?

Speaker 6

I think it's a gut feeling.

Speaker 6

I mean, can't totally explain the creative process of the actual making the music or what appears in my head.

Speaker 6

If I could, I'd market it.

Speaker 6

I'd be making money doing doing that.

Speaker 6

对。

Right.

Speaker 6

But it it is for me, it's a lot of improvisation when I do finally sit down to to write music.

Speaker 6

Some things work and some things don't, and I just sort of build on what works and Yeah.

Speaker 6

But when I'm watching the episode, I usually I think because I'm a composer, I think about music in every episode in every scene.

Speaker 6

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 6

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 6

Knowing full well that, of course, that's not appropriate.

Speaker 6

And then when we narrow it down, usually, in my head, we I after I've watched it, I have thoughts about it, but I want to then go back to the people who know best, you and the writers and and Kelly or Skip, whoever edited it, who has been working with it longer and whose intentions are behind what's on the screen.

Speaker 6

And then I can ask, what is the most important element of this moment?

Speaker 6

And then we can together decide whether music would help to emphasize that what you're trying to portray the most or not, or if it would hurt.

Speaker 6

So, like, for example, episode where Gus goes to visit Tio.

Speaker 6

We talked a lot about music in that scene in the in the the nursing home.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 6

And we went without music, ultimately.

Speaker 6

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 6

Although I did write music for that scene and so did Thomas, our music supervisor, found music.

Speaker 6

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

License licensed possibilities for music for that scene.

Speaker 6

But in the end, they were so good and there was no reason to heighten anything in that scene that we didn't use it.

Speaker 6

And that's very common

Speaker 1

for us.

Speaker 1

It's interesting because the piece of music that you wrote for that scene was beautiful and evocative and I mean, wasn't when I say beautiful, I mean, it was a great piece of music.

Speaker 1

It it wasn't it was it was it it it it reinforced the emotion of that scene.

Speaker 1

And that was the thing that I think recalling now, the reason we decided to go dry with that scene and not use your your wonderful music was because it was an as I recall now, Giancarlo's Giancarlo playing playing Gus there was very it was a very emotional moment, which was a little unusual for Gus to play naked emotion or in this sense naked a naked need for revenge and for the sadistic, you know, taking out his his punishment on on on meeting out his punishment on on on Tio there.

Speaker 1

So it felt like at that moment, you know, we're getting everything we need from him.

Speaker 1

And if we had anything more selling, any more emotion here, it might it might feel like too much.

Speaker 1

I think that was

Speaker 6

同意。

Agreed.

Speaker 6

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

But But the

Speaker 1

the music you wrote was great.

Speaker 6

And we didn't know until we tried.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

And that's I think half of my job is to write music for scenes that that don't end up having music or end up having some other kind of music you don't a lot of times you just don't know until you try.

Speaker 1

确实。

True.

Speaker 6

And and you can guess all you want, but when you finally marry the two things together, then you know.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

Not until then.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So, Aaron, I'd like to get I'd like to jump back a little bit into the very beginning of the episode because Jesse now is sort of starting to understand that there's a larger plan afoot here that he was really not involved in.

Speaker 0

It's that scene that, you know, you gentlemen wrote, the scene where Jesse realizes that there's blood for Gus, there's blood for Mike, and there's blood There's for so many subtleties this year.

Speaker 0

And now, you know, there's so many things that Jesse is starting to understand.

Speaker 0

What's how did that start, Vince, with you guys?

Speaker 0

Does it start early?

Speaker 0

还有

And

Speaker 1

The subtlety, for instance, of of of of of of Jesse realizing how how deep up up chess player Yeah.

Speaker 1

Gustavo is.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And also because

Speaker 1

he built a hospital for himself.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

In the middle of a in the middle of a a truck barn.

Speaker 0

And that's what I'm saying.

Speaker 0

There's so many subtleties.

Speaker 0

But now, you know, Jesse is really seeing that, you know, that there's been a lot of play in the background.

Speaker 0

Let's put it that way, I guess.

Speaker 1

A lot of a lot of behind the scenes maneuvering Yeah.

Speaker 1

And machinations and

Speaker 0

Is that difficult for you guys?

Speaker 5

不难。

No.

Speaker 5

I think it's fun.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我

I

Speaker 5

mean, we start the season with seeing, you know, a a phase of Gus's long term plan.

Speaker 5

And, I mean, we never I don't I don't know the answer to this, but, like, I imagine that the hospital was built before Gus may have even or the plans for the hospital maybe predate Walt.

Speaker 5

You know?

Speaker 0

Really?

Speaker 5

I mean Sure.

Speaker 5

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 5

Because this is Yeah.

Speaker 5

This is a long I think

Speaker 1

Maybe so.

Speaker 5

I think Gus would have have to have known that he's building the super lab.

Speaker 5

He's gonna get pushed back from the cartel because he's gonna cut them out.

Speaker 5

So at a certain point, he's gonna have to do what he does at the Hacienda with Don Eladio.

Speaker 5

So it's it's always fun.

Speaker 5

You know, like in the previous episode where where we talked about, you know, Gus laying down the the towel and everything's planned out.

Speaker 5

It's like that that part of Gus in terms of how deep a game he's playing and a lot of this stuff, I mean, the Jesse of it is just brilliant improvisation, you know, you know, in terms of making lemonade out of lemons with Jesse.

Speaker 5

But I think he was always planning on point poisoning Doniladio.

Speaker 5

Doniladio.

Speaker 4

What the whole Tio backstory is about.

Speaker 4

And one thing that Aaron's learning is it's fun because, you know, a couple episodes ago, you had the great scene with Brian where Brian's like, it's all about me.

Speaker 5

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

You're learning really, Brian's kind of in Gus's world, it's not all about Brian.

Speaker 4

It's all about this other thing, and you're learning, you know, these things that you're learning.

Speaker 4

He's got a much larger

Speaker 1

It's a slow of the world.

Speaker 3

Slow Brian.

Speaker 3

对。

Right.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

所以

So

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Aaron, how much of what's happening in the whole season do you know at the beginning, or do you just learn it?

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

I I learn it as the script.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

As as it goes.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 0

Did do you think that helps or hinders?

Speaker 3

不。

No.

Speaker 3

I think I think it helps.

Speaker 3

Really?

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Think I it's great.

Speaker 3

I I think I I I can't wait to see what happens in the next episode.

Speaker 3

So we get these we get usually two or three outlines at once, which is just a rough summary of what the episode is about.

Speaker 3

And I try not read them all at once, but sometimes I can't help myself because know, I'm just like anyone else.

Speaker 3

I'm just I'm dying to I'm just salivating.

Speaker 3

I'm I'm dying to know what what's gonna happen with these, these characters and this story.

Speaker 3

But, yeah.

Speaker 3

I'm I have no idea where this this show is heading, you know, at the beginning at all.

Speaker 0

But, like, at that point, do you I mean, you know, in in in 04/11, at that point where you realize this whole thing has been set up probably from I mean, you don't even know your own blood type, and they know blood type.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I mean, does it is it starting to dawn on Jesse as far as, like, how deep this goes?

Speaker 0

And do you think Jesse, like, feels tired?

Speaker 0

Is he is he, like, so wanting to be done with these people?

Speaker 3

Don't know.

Speaker 3

I don't know about that.

Speaker 3

I mean, I think he's it's a part of his world now, you know, and I think he's he's accepting that, but I think it's he's just so intrigued by how brilliant

Speaker 1

I think so too.

Speaker 6

Think you're right.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

就像

It's like

Speaker 0

making 20 or something.

Speaker 0

Hate a guy.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

If you hate a guy, you gotta your hat's gotta be off to a guy who builds himself his own one man hospital.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Muncie had a schedule, like Sam said, and staffs it and and has blood types of cross match for everybody who might potentially come in with a bullet in their gut.

Speaker 1

你

You

Speaker 3

know?

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You gotta you gotta your hat has gotta be off to a dude like that.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

即使

Even if

Speaker 1

you even if you want him dead.

Speaker 6

确实。

Absolutely.

Speaker 6

他

He

Speaker 1

builds himself a hospital for himself.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And and staffs it and makes them they're on call, obviously, because they didn't know when, you know?

Speaker 6

He's setting it up so that he clearly had a relationship with that the doctor from years.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I love the actor who plays

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

He's really good.

Speaker 0

So great great job he So

Speaker 5

love that that that quality in Jesse that's just the opposite of of Walt where it's like, Jesse has no pretense of being the smartest guy in the room at all.

Speaker 5

He's he's got a really kind of clear eyed picture of where he falls intellectually.

Speaker 6

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

你

You

Speaker 3

know?

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Totally.

Speaker 3

他

He's

Speaker 5

like, wow.

Speaker 5

That guy's smart.

Speaker 5

As opposed to Walt, when Walt comes across something brilliant that Gus has done, Walt's, like, hair or head's about to explode.

Speaker 5

Right?

Speaker 5

So insecure.

Speaker 5

He's so insecure.

Speaker 0

You know, you brought this up a little bit earlier, Vince, when, Bob was here, but I kinda wanna jump back to it.

Speaker 0

I'm curious, and, you know, maybe you don't wanna answer this, but I'm curious because it never occurred to me when I read the script, where when Skyler says, are you blackmailing me?

Speaker 0

Is he blackmailing Skyler?

Speaker 1

Well, should let these

Speaker 0

guys know.

Speaker 1

I mean,

Speaker 0

I I love the fact that I don't know.

Speaker 0

I mean, you know, I feel, like, kind of stupid that I don't know, but I, like, I love the fact that that's kind of an interesting to me.

Speaker 0

And I'm like, wow.

Speaker 0

Is he?

Speaker 1

Before they answer that, I wanna give a shout out to the guy who played Gus' personal doctor too, by way.

Speaker 1

That actor did a really good job.

Speaker 1

是

Was

Speaker 0

that JB Blank.

Speaker 1

JB。

JB.

Speaker 1

JB did a great job.

Speaker 1

He reminds me, wouldn't he be perfect if they were making a movie about the making of Raiders of Lost Ark for him to play Salah?

Speaker 2

That guy.

Speaker 2

Salah.

Speaker 2

演员。

Actor.

Speaker 1

John John Reese Davies.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

印地。

Indy.

Speaker 1

Asps.

Speaker 1

Very dangerous.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You go first.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

He'd be wouldn't he be great?

Speaker 5

He's exactly that.

Speaker 1

I love that guy.

Speaker 1

He's good.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

He's British.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

The actor?

Speaker 1

He is.

Speaker 5

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 5

You mean, I mean, Indianapolis

Speaker 1

Well, in in Jones.

Speaker 1

Absolutely, the John Reese Davies is, but he's not also JB British?

Speaker 4

Had a British accent.

Speaker 4

所以

So

Speaker 1

Did he?

Speaker 1

He did?

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

I didn't meet him, but he's I didn't know.

Speaker 1

Anyway, back to your question, which was a good one.

Speaker 0

Is is Ted Black finally scholar?

Speaker 0

Does he want more money?

Speaker 0

It didn't occur to me.

Speaker 0

And now I was like, wow.

Speaker 0

That's cool.

Speaker 0

I I, You know?

Speaker 5

You know, Ted is like it's one of those characters that we've all been tempted to, and Vince has kind of literally talked talked us out of it many times, which is like, you kinda wanna make Ted a douchebag just because he's the other guy.

Speaker 5

And, you know, there's something about the you know, it's very easy to make him a douchebag or a bad guy.

Speaker 5

You know?

Speaker 5

So but we wanted to kinda straddle the line with this scene about, you know, whether or not you know, I think this is kind of an open question about whether or he's really blackmailing.

Speaker 5

I think he kinda has to be.

Speaker 5

Right?

Speaker 1

I think so too.

Speaker 5

I think that, like

Speaker 1

但我

But I

Speaker 5

he may not know it himself, but, like

Speaker 0

It's like saying, well, I have to kick the kids out of school, and I have to pay for that.

Speaker 1

And I and I noticed you didn't give me all the money back.

Speaker 1

There's the money for the Mercedes.

Speaker 1

You aren't gonna be returning that.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Oh, well, these things are very difficult to

Speaker 3

get.

Speaker 3

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 5

知道。

Know.

Speaker 5

But he doesn't play he plays it really well because there's nothing kind of, like, shifty eyed about him too.

Speaker 1

My favorite line, every time you when you first said it, it floored me.

Speaker 1

And then right here, where this is our Writer's Room where we tape these podcasts.

Speaker 1

Right here in the writer's Room with a line about where she says, Ted, are you black, Melanie?

Speaker 1

不是。

No.

Speaker 1

什么?

What?

Speaker 1

You know, blah blah blah.
