Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So now y'all know.

Speaker 1

So we'd say what Andrew and Bill and Skip, obviously, is our other wonderful editor.

Speaker 0

Skip is our other editor.

Speaker 0

This one is written by Vince Gilligan.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

And Andrew Ortner is our associate producer who works in post.

Speaker 3

没错。

That is correct.

Speaker 0

好。

Cool.

Speaker 0

行。

Okay.

Speaker 0

So, Vince, I'm gonna let you go ahead and take point on this because, you know, we've been working up to this all season long.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And, boy, has it been a ride, and there are so many great things to talk about.

Speaker 0

What would you like to talk about first?

Speaker 1

Oh, man.

Speaker 1

Where to begin?

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 0

好。

Okay.

Speaker 0

I'll I'll bring up the first thing.

Speaker 0

So you decided to kill Gus.

Speaker 2

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 2

Well, I didn't see the episode.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Wait a minute.

Speaker 1

Did you get a rater for the time?

Speaker 2

This is the ding boom moment that we've been talking about since since season three.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 2

I think.

Speaker 1

We call it ding boom.

Speaker 1

We had a card up.

Speaker 1

We have the we have a we have a master board that has cards for ideas that we we we plan to get to throughout the season.

Speaker 1

We had a card up.

Speaker 1

Ding boom.

Speaker 1

Oh, look at that.

Speaker 1

Over here.

Speaker 1

什么

What

Speaker 0

does that mean?

Speaker 4

Ding boom.

Speaker 1

Ding boom.

Speaker 1

What do you think it means?

Speaker 1

Now that you're seeing the episode.

Speaker 0

But I mean, ding.

Speaker 0

What did you go?

Speaker 1

叮。

Ding.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

I get it.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 0

This alright.

Speaker 0

Missed it.

Speaker 2

So that's all

Speaker 1

I'm Watching Harry's Law.

Speaker 4

That's the title right there, by the way.

Speaker 2

什么?

What?

Speaker 2

Ding, ding, boom.

Speaker 1

Ding, boom.

Speaker 1

You know what?

Speaker 0

It will give it away.

Speaker 1

I think

Speaker 0

it It will.

Speaker 1

I think it would.

Speaker 1

I think it would.

Speaker 0

Because it gets published on, like, IMDB and stuff like that.

Speaker 1

And we got really smart fans.

Speaker 1

And I'm not just blowing smoke up their butts just because they're watching they're listening to this.

Speaker 1

But in a row, I think they would figure it out if we'd had named it dingboom.

Speaker 4

Bing doom.

Speaker 2

Bing doom?

Speaker 2

Bing doom.

Speaker 2

Bing doom.

Speaker 0

That's interesting.

Speaker 1

Bing Crosby comes back to

Speaker 0

the dead and

Speaker 1

kills, lays waste.

Speaker 0

But, you know what?

Speaker 0

Tell me tell me how you guys know, because, Vince, you were telling me that that pitching this idea, it came to you in the button that what it meant you said the middle of the season and you had to pitch it basically to your writing staff.

Speaker 0

Is that correct?

Speaker 1

Is that right?

Speaker 1

This is I'm glad you are here, Tom.

Speaker 1

Because you represent

Speaker 2

Ding Boom was back in season three.

Speaker 2

I mean, I'm pretty sure it was definitely it was definitely Vince who who imagined T.

Speaker 2

O。

O.

Speaker 2

Hitting this bell and and setting off a bomb.

Speaker 1

We had that back that idea back in season three,

Speaker 2

did we?

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

How come we didn't get to it in season two?

Speaker 1

Can't even remember now.

Speaker 1

I don't know

Speaker 0

why.

Speaker 0

Because you didn't wanna kill Gus?

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

We didn't wanna lose him.

Speaker 1

Oh, Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

We wanted Gus back for another season.

Speaker 1

But we thought back that fuck Jesus.

Speaker 1

I'm glad you're here because I I I swear to god, it's all a blur.

Speaker 2

That card was on the board.

Speaker 2

Season three.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

I'm I'm impressed.

Speaker 1

Man.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

I'm impressed with us.

Speaker 1

Don't know how it would ever take

Speaker 2

to ever get there, but then all of a sudden was like, oh, yeah.

Speaker 2

We could do ding boom.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Well, no.

Speaker 0

I wasn't really saying about how Gus was gonna die, but I think what you and I were talking about or what you were explaining to me a couple of weeks ago was about how Walt was gonna accomplish this thing that he accomplished.

Speaker 0

Because basically you had it start in episode 12 when we couldn't talk about it in episode twelve's podcast.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

But now since episode 13 has aired, we can talk about the whole thing and how complicated it was.

Speaker 0

And basically Walt had the, you know, the mate in 20 kind of move, but he didn't realize it.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

I remember you telling me that you had to basically pitch this ending to the writers.

Speaker 0

And at first, they didn't really this is just the way I understood it.

Speaker 0

They didn't really understand what you were what you were pitching.

Speaker 1

I think everyone understood, but but it took a while to get folks' minds around not not Gus dying, but rather what the very last shot of this particular episode Yes.

Speaker 1

Indicates regarding what what happened to the little boy Brock and why exactly was he in the hospital.

Speaker 1

And it wasn't ricin poisoning.

Speaker 1

It was something it was indeed a poison called know, it was in the Lily of the Valley.

Speaker 1

And Walt's got it in his backyard.

Speaker 1

And what is that about?

Speaker 1

And I think I think the issue you're talking about is not Gus's death, but but how Walt wound up back in Jesse's Good Graces, which Yes.

Speaker 1

Which came about two thirds of the way through last week's episode.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So can you talk a little bit about

Speaker 1

好。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I guess

Speaker 0

pitching that and how you came up with that idea and

Speaker 1

Well, know, we always said, I mean, Walt, this this show is about mister Chips turning into Scarface, about about our good guy hero in the first episode, episode by episode, turning darker and nastier and meaner and more immoral and and getting to be more and more and more of a bad guy, more of an antagonist.

Speaker 1

And Walt has been on that path since day one.

Speaker 1

And I don't know.

Speaker 1

It looks it looks pretty it looks there's a it looks pretty much like he had a hand in poisoning that little boy.

Speaker 1

I mean, if that's what that last shot is Right.

Speaker 1

Is meant to indicate.

Speaker 0

But the interesting thing too that that I'm sort of I guess I'm sort of getting at is how well, god, it's so complicated.

Speaker 0

It's complex.

Speaker 0

It's Walt has thought of this idea and he's, you know, basically sort of pinned it pinned the poisoning on Gus, but yet Jesse doesn't Jesse thinks Gus did it, but Walt has possibly really done it and he's using now he's using Jesse.

Speaker 0

He's using Jesse as a pawn to get all of this stuff done.

Speaker 0

Is that not

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, that's you know, it it the question if if if one draws a conclusion from that last scene, which would be a fair conclusion to draw, that that that Walt indeed was the one who poisoned this poor little boy, Brock.

Speaker 1

Then the question is why would he do such a thing?

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 1

One interpretation?

Speaker 1

不。

No.

Speaker 1

I do know.

Speaker 1

But I mean, I'm I'm trying to be coy.

Speaker 1

I'm trying to be coy about I mean, it you know, and and back me up here, Tom.

Speaker 1

It's keep in mind coming in episode 12, Jesse would not speak to Walt.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

Would not talk to him.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

Would not.

Speaker 1

Walt couldn't get him on the phone.

Speaker 1

Walt couldn't well, if Walt knocked on his door, Jesse would shove him.

Speaker 2

Gus succeeded in what he thought would never happen, which is taking Jesse's loyalty away from Walt.

Speaker 2

I mean, these guys were been locked together, have been locked together for, you know, seasons now.

Speaker 2

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

You know, going through, you know, almost dying together and killing together and and and then your Gus manages to take that all away from Walt.

Speaker 2

So he need to do he thought sitting there in his back spinning the gun.

Speaker 2

He needed a radical idea.

Speaker 2

How is he gonna survive?

Speaker 2

And he needed he needed his partner back.

Speaker 1

He needed his partner back.

Speaker 1

He cannot survive without his partner, Jesse.

Speaker 2

And he takes a huge gamble in you know, Jesse might come in there and blow his head off Yeah.

Speaker 2

Off and not give him that chance to to flip it around and say, wait a minute.

Speaker 2

Gus did this.

Speaker 2

He wallpins us all on Gus.

Speaker 2

Gus is the master manipulator.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And I'm just a, you know, I'm a victim.

Speaker 2

I'm I'm 20 steps behind.

Speaker 2

Meanwhile, he's way ahead of the game at this point.

Speaker 1

Why would I poison a child?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It makes It makes But no

Speaker 2

it ultimately makes perfect sense.

Speaker 1

It it's brilliant.

Speaker 1

We I to me, yes.

Speaker 1

I mean, it's brilliant on Walt's part because what's worst case scenario, Jesse comes in and shoots him in the head.

Speaker 1

He's gonna die anyway.

Speaker 1

He's got, you know, there's the old expression.

Speaker 1

He's got nothing to lose.

Speaker 1

Everyone's heard that everywhere.

Speaker 1

It it he really has nothing to lose.

Speaker 1

He is a dead man.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Walt is.

Speaker 1

In episode 12, I'm talking.

Speaker 1

And worst case scenario is Jesse walks in and then doesn't listen to his protestations and just shoots him.

Speaker 1

He's dead anyway.

Speaker 1

He might as well be killed by Jesse rather than Gus having the satisfaction of doing it himself.

Speaker 1

That's worst case scenario.

Speaker 1

Best case scenario is Jesse comes in and and Walt and Jesse comes in at it with a full stead head of steam saying, you were the only one who knew about the ricin and the cigarette.

Speaker 1

You and I you other than me, we were the two people on Earth who knew about the ricin and the cigarette.

Speaker 1

You poison this kid just to just to just to stick it to me because you know I'm working with Gus before I'm dead and gone.

Speaker 1

You you stick it to me.

Speaker 1

Why would I do that, Jesse?

Speaker 1

If he took it back at me, take it just stick it to me.

Speaker 1

How could I have gotten it?

Speaker 1

I you you you had you had Saul somehow.

Speaker 1

You had Huel, the the security guard at Saul's place, get it off of me.

Speaker 1

Why would I do that?

Speaker 1

It makes no sense.

Speaker 1

Well, it got us talking for one time.

Speaker 1

We got it got us

Speaker 2

Part of part of what is brilliant about Walt's plan too is that he knows Jesse is not gonna come in there and just blast them away because he had after what happened with Gail, I think he knows it is a you know, it is hard to pull the trigger on somebody and Jesse has already lived through it and it's torn him apart all season long.

Speaker 2

So I think he knows that he's got a he's got a little there's a window there when Jesse comes in, he sets his gun down and he knows Jesse's gonna pick it up.

Speaker 2

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

And I think he knows I've got it, you know, there's gonna be an opportunity here for me to play this kid.

Speaker 1

He puts the gun this is how fiendishly clever I think this man is.

Speaker 1

He puts the gun within Jesse's reach.

Speaker 1

Jesse walks in, you know, and and he's gotta bring this thing.

Speaker 1

If it's gonna work at all, if the plan is gonna work at all and he may die trying.

Speaker 1

That's the calculated risk he's taking.

Speaker 1

Walt here.

Speaker 1

And and I'm I'm going back to episode 12, but obviously, we couldn't say this in last week's podcast.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

But the calculated risk he's he's taking here is, you know, I gotta lay it all out on the line here.

Speaker 1

I gotta I gotta I gotta I gotta rebond my partner to me.

Speaker 1

He's gotta see the error of his thinking here.

Speaker 1

He's gotta he's gotta point a gun at me, threaten my life, and I gotta I gotta say to him what is actually a very excellent argument.

Speaker 1

Why on earth?

Speaker 1

Why, Jesse?

Speaker 1

Why would I poison a child?

Speaker 0

And look who has used children before.

Speaker 1

And look who has used children before.

Speaker 2

Look has benefits.

Speaker 2

Look what it's doing.

Speaker 1

Who does his benefit?

Speaker 1

He wants you to And pull a And then in that in the in the e in the aftermath of that, who looks like the biggest, most evil genius in the history of the world?

Speaker 1

Walt.

Speaker 1

不。

No.

Speaker 1

Well, no.

Speaker 1

That's the reality.

Speaker 0

Oh, okay.

Speaker 0

And yes and

Speaker 1

是的。

I yes.

Speaker 1

I agree with you.

Speaker 1

But but in the aftermath of Jesse, why would I do this?

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

Who stands to benefit?

Speaker 1

Who is okay with using children?

Speaker 1

Who has cameras on us all times?

Speaker 1

You know, he didn't know about the rice.

Speaker 1

Well, who says he didn't?

Speaker 1

He's got a camera on us twenty four hours a day.

Speaker 1

You're telling me that Tyrus can't sneak into your locker and steal the

Speaker 2

He comes up with a plan so bizarre and complicated that only somebody as brilliant as Gus could have come up with this.

Speaker 2

对。

Yes.

Speaker 2

So, it's like As brilliant and evil as

Speaker 1

Gus.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

That Gus is the only one who could pull this off.

Speaker 1

And yet it was him.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So so Spasky beats Fisher.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

But, I mean, you keep talking about Gus' brilliance.

Speaker 0

This came from you, Vince.

Speaker 0

This is your brilliance.

Speaker 0

That's why I'm just curious how this all went with the right

Speaker 1

all of us.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I mean, it's it absolutely is brilliant.

Speaker 0

And I'm just curious how it all and when it all came when when you guys

Speaker 1

We were talking about it for months.

Speaker 1

I don't remember exactly.

Speaker 1

I I I forget when we come up with what.

Speaker 1

But I know this one, we bandied this about for It was a start a starting around episode.

Speaker 5

It was talked about for

Speaker 2

a long time, the actual specifics, I mean, I think came when we were breaking four thirteen.

Speaker 2

I mean, you're looking looking at some of those cards there.

Speaker 2

Reminded that

Speaker 1

Because I mean, we didn't have

Speaker 2

all the details early on, but we figured it out for the mean

Speaker 1

And we knew and we and we knew of when did t o first make his episode eight?

Speaker 1

We knew going in episode eight that we wanted T.

Speaker 2

O。

O.

Speaker 2

We had to weave T.

Speaker 2

O。

O.

Speaker 2

Back into the

Speaker 1

Well, yeah.

Speaker 2

Season four.

Speaker 2

Early enough so that it didn't seem like a sudden surprise

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 2

In in 04/13 that, oh, now Gus needs to go to T.

Speaker 2

O。

O.

Speaker 2

不。

No.

Speaker 2

这是……这是……

It's it's part of a

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

你

You

Speaker 1

知道。

know.

Speaker 1

We're trying to play a very deep game, a very long game here.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

We're trying

Speaker 1

to play.

Speaker 1

And and and

Speaker 0

And I think you succeeded.

Speaker 1

Well, thank you.

Speaker 1

I I but going back to episode eight, we wanted we wanted everyone has a chink in their armor.

Speaker 1

Everyone has a there's a loose there's a there's a weak link in every chain.

Speaker 1

And and Gus, as smart as he is, has one weakness, and that is his extreme hatred for for Hector Salamanca, Tio, who is is the person who shot his his best friend, his maybe more than best friend in in the head way back when twenty years ago.

Speaker 1

And that's his that's his and that happens in this episode.

Speaker 1

Tyrus says, maybe I should do this.

Speaker 1

You know, in the going into the third act here.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

In this episode, Tyra says, maybe I should do this.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

And and Gus says, I do this.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

In other words, I'm gonna kill T.

Speaker 1

O。

O.

Speaker 1

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Or no one is.

Speaker 1

I'm the one who who who who ends this person's life because I hate him so much.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

And I've been waiting for this day for a long time.

Speaker 1

And the only reason I didn't do it before now is because I I'd rather him suffer at my hands for as long as he possibly can.

Speaker 1

But I wasn't able to make him suffer until the two insane, scary cousins were both dead.

Speaker 1

That's why that's why the flashback to to 03/2008 and 04/2008.

Speaker 1

You know, I I I didn't have the I didn't I didn't have the ability to torture this old bastard until these two lunatic Terminator cousins were both dead.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

And and Tuco before that.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

So

Speaker 0

Well, it's just I think that what you guys have done is just incredibly brilliant.

Speaker 0

And, I mean, it's so funny because mean, not funny funny, but it started in in 04/12.

Speaker 0

And I've when I talked to Brian a couple weeks ago, I was, like, telling him how amazing I just thought it was, that scene in four twelve when, you know, the scene that you wrote, Tom, the scene where Walt is explaining all that stuff to Jesse, you know, why would I do this?

Speaker 0

How could I do this?

Speaker 0

And Brian is actually having to play a guy who does know all of this.

Speaker 0

I mean, he's having to play Yeah.

Speaker 0

A guy who is trying to convince Jesse on one hand, but knowing that all of this is, you know, a ruse.

Speaker 0

This is all, you know, bull

Speaker 1

他是个

He's a

Speaker 2

perfect liar.

Speaker 2

I mean, he's he's grown into I mean, he's working on so many levels now that it's scary.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

And I mean, even last week with podcast last week, we could not talk we could talk about the scene and talk about it on one level but just the complexity of it on now that we know what actually happened on this level.

Speaker 6

对,

Yeah,

Speaker 0

是的。

yeah.

Speaker 0

The interesting too, I know I brought up earlier that now you've you've killed Gus and you killed Tyrus, but Mike is still left.

Speaker 1

Mike's still Mike's still recuperating down

Speaker 0

in Mexico.

Speaker 0

Mexico, which is kind of interesting seeing as how, you know, now everybody knows we have a fifth and final season.

Speaker 1

But I think there

Speaker 2

was a line.

Speaker 2

I had actually pitched a line.

Speaker 2

It it didn't get in the script for 04/13.

Speaker 2

But when Jesse and Walter debriefing at the end, I I had wanted Jeff Jesse to say, Mike's gonna be pissed.

Speaker 2

Just so we're aware that something is still out there that we have to deal with.

Speaker 2

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I think it's great, though.

Speaker 0

I think it's it's wonderful that you guys have left, you know, something, you know, it's a little bit of

Speaker 1

Well, hope it goes without sexual.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Well, I hope it goes without saying that that we didn't Giancarlo Esposito has been such a magnificent addition to this series.

Speaker 1

And actually, I took him aside.

Speaker 1

I was at in Albuquerque, and we were prepping to do episode eight or nine or something.

Speaker 1

I don't know when it was.

Speaker 1

It was away.

Speaker 1

It was months or months before we killed off his character.

Speaker 1

And I and I took him into my office, just the two of us, and I said, I gotta tell you what's coming.

Speaker 1

And and I I was like I was just like I was was I was like I was given some of the world's worst news.

Speaker 1

I mean, for for my end, not for his end, but for my end, I I felt so tongue tied telling him we're gonna kill off his character.

Speaker 1

I felt guilty.

Speaker 1

I felt, like, ashamed.

Speaker 1

But it's a we he has been such a magnificent addition to the show.

Speaker 3

别来

Don't comes

Speaker 2

out in season five.

Speaker 2

They saved Gus' brain, they're building

Speaker 0

a new

Speaker 2

an all new robot Gus.

Speaker 0

He's really not dead.

Speaker 0

对。

No.

Speaker 0

It's like the Terminator.

Speaker 0

But it's like,

Speaker 1

you know, I I take all the all my cues from the greatest movie ever made, Highlander.

Speaker 1

There there there can be only one.

Speaker 1

So

Speaker 0

Well, you know what?

Speaker 0

Let's since we've we've kinda talked about the whole, I guess, the whole big, you know, clincher for the season, Let's go back and talk sort of near the beginning.

Speaker 0

You actually put your mom in the show this year.

Speaker 1

My mom played Gus in this episode.

Speaker 1

She did a fantastic job.

Speaker 4

Couple of scenes.

Speaker 1

My mom is a is is the the nice lady who lives next door to Walt who Walt shamelessly endangers.

Speaker 1

She plays Becky and Becky Simmons by the way.

Speaker 1

That her name is a wonderful lady back in Richmond, Virginia.

Speaker 1

I gave a shout out to Becky's Becky's a good friend of my girlfriend, Holly.

Speaker 1

And and I'm friends with her too, Becky and her husband, Kurt, and also Stephanie Doswell, another friend who's

Speaker 0

Oh, she's on

Speaker 1

the Put her name in earlier episode.

Speaker 1

She was the realtor who

Speaker 0

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Who Marie stole the spoon, the memorial spoon, commemorative spoon from.

Speaker 1

And then then Holly, I got to give shout out to all three of them now.

Speaker 1

And then Holly's friend Anita, who's who's last name Ermentrout or her it's a long story.

Speaker 1

But her name Ermentrout is we reserve for Mike's last name.

Speaker 1

You see her last name on the I had to give a shout out to all three of these ladies.

Speaker 1

Mike's last name is seen in passing, as we've never heard it before until episode 11.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But when when we see the bags of blood Right.

Speaker 1

Down in the MASH, the little one man MASH hospital down in Mexico.

Speaker 1

But my mom, Gail Gilligan, is in that scene.

Speaker 1

And the unfortunate thing is the first airing of this episode will have my mom in it, and all subsequent episodes will not have my mom in it.

Speaker 0

But it'll be on the DVD.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And I'm not kidding.

Speaker 1

This episode was three minutes and fourteen seconds over long.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 1

And Skip, who did a hell of a job, as always, editing it.

Speaker 1

Thank you.

Speaker 1

We were it was miserably hard for me personally to cut out to cut out the the last cut getting all the time out was painful, but the last three minutes or so was miserable.

Speaker 1

And it finally dawned on us that the best thing to do is to lift out the scene of Walt calling up the neighbor lady, getting her to go check out the place.

Speaker 1

So in subsequent airings, we have to air it two time.

Speaker 1

So hopefully, everyone will see the first airing with my mom because that scene will be lifted out in subsequent airings.

Speaker 1

But it will then again be permanently available on the DVD in its longer form.

Speaker 0

Let me ask you this too because, you know, your mom goes in the house and then the guys come out of the backyard and then Walt goes in and he's going through the crawl space and then he has to jump the fence and stuff like that.

Speaker 0

What what about Brian's stunt work?

Speaker 0

I mean, did is this Brian or did he do all Brian.

Speaker 1

He's great.

Speaker 0

He's just he's yeah.

Speaker 0

He's tough.

Speaker 0

Did he jump the fence and everything?

Speaker 0

That was him.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

He earns those Emmys.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

确实。

He does.

Speaker 0

他

He

Speaker 1

had the pile on the other side when they're pointy with the wings when

Speaker 0

he landed on them.

Speaker 0

That hurts.

Speaker 1

Just just to make things tougher on himself.

Speaker 1

He's a method actor.

Speaker 1

Now he's he's tell him about that shot, the way that works.

Speaker 1

Yeah, well the shot when

Speaker 5

Brian crawls out from under the house and runs and jumps over the fence, we've actually used two different takes.

Speaker 0

哦

Oh

Speaker 5

哇。

wow.

Speaker 5

Because the take where he kind of just falls over the wall, it took him, he dropped the money, it took

Speaker 3

him a long time to get to

Speaker 5

终点。

the end.

Speaker 5

So we took the second take and the first one and combined them together.

Speaker 5

不错。

Cool.

Speaker 5

And we got really lucky because I don't know how he does it, but he hits the footsteps almost perfectly.

Speaker 5

But then Andrew and Diane had to go in and do a little cleanup work for us.

Speaker 3

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

Then we we take that shot and work with with visual effects, and we kinda marry them both.

Speaker 3

And they have to go in frame by frame and kind of paint some things out, you know, kind of add some things just so it is the perfect lens.

Speaker 3

It does feel like one continuous shot.

Speaker 0

Why did you have to do it?

Speaker 5

Because we like the way he went over the wall in the in the other take.

Speaker 1

Oh, okay.

Speaker 1

We in other words, we didn't have to do it, but but we we we liked we liked the beginning.

Speaker 1

This is a water, what we call is all in one uninterrupted take except it's not through the magic of editing Right.

Speaker 1

And through the magic of post production visual effects.

Speaker 1

It looks like one take, but we like the beginning of one take and we like the end of the other take.

Speaker 1

不错。

Cool.

Speaker 1

So I gets what I want.

Speaker 1

I don't always, but but it's nice when I do.

Speaker 0

You know what?

Speaker 0

I don't think we've ever talked about it before.

Speaker 0

Let's talk a little bit about Francesca.

Speaker 0

Francesca has a great scene in this.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Tina.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

She's awesome.

Speaker 0

She's really, really funny.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

But she actually has a lot to do where she's in a blackmail vault.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

This door costs $20,000.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I was like, that's great.

Speaker 0

Can you talk a little bit about the actress that plays Francesca?

Speaker 4

Tina Tina Parker.

Speaker 1

Tina Parker from Texas.

Speaker 1

Is she from

Speaker 0

is it Albuquerque?

Speaker 0

She comes in from Texas.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

I think she comes in from Texas.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

She's somebody we found through Keira Rai, our local casting director.

Speaker 4

And that was a hard part because I think Vince and the writers had a very specific vision in mind for somebody that Sol would be sort of inappropriately lusting after, but that wouldn't be your traditional, you know, poster girl.

Speaker 4

She, you know, I think they wanted her to, you know, really be a very specific look and have an attitude too, and that was I remember that casting process where Vince looked at maybe, I think, like 20 different takes.

Speaker 4

And there was and and he and he just he kept 20 different actresses?

Speaker 4

Different different I'm sorry.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

Different actresses on tape that Keira had for him.

Speaker 4

And it just we we didn't quite get there.

Speaker 4

And Keira said, you know what?

Speaker 4

I have one person I was I I I love her as an actress, but, like, I she just she I wasn't she's not, again, like, the traditional down the middle voluptuous girl secretary type, but why don't you take a look?

Speaker 4

I've been holding her back, but there's something about her.

Speaker 4

And Vince looked at her and he's like, that's exactly who I had in mind.

Speaker 4

And and Vince keeps bringing her back, obviously.

Speaker 4

You know, when when actors come through, they get written to and the writers, you know, find ways to bring them into the story.

Speaker 4

And this was a huge scene for her.

Speaker 1

You know, the weird thing is I had never met directed her in this episode.

Speaker 4

Oh, that's alright.

Speaker 1

She's lovely.

Speaker 1

Because I it just shows how yeah.

Speaker 1

She is lovely.

Speaker 1

And I I love Tina.

Speaker 1

And it just it shows how, sadly, how how rare it is for me to be out there when you guys are shooting.

Speaker 1

I'm usually back here in Burbank.

Speaker 1

And but Tom, all the writers, I think, we all love Tina.

Speaker 1

We all love Francesca.

Speaker 1

We keep we keep putting her in stuff.

Speaker 1

It was fun letting her have a big scene big scene of her own here.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That was fun.

Speaker 0

I wanted to mention real quick the the photograph of Tuco's I mean, excuse me, of Tio's family where he's got he's got the two cousins Yeah.

Speaker 0

You know, in his arms, and he's got that great that's a great photo, but that little boy who I'm assuming is playing Tuco, whose kids are these?

Speaker 0

Who took this photo?

Speaker 0

我们

We

Speaker 4

found them through Extra's Casting through Catherine.

Speaker 4

And they brought in a bunch of kids.

Speaker 4

And yeah, it's Tuco and the cousins.

Speaker 4

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

So It's young young Tuco.

Speaker 0

Took the photo, though.

Speaker 1

Ursula Coyote.

Speaker 0

Oh, okay.

Speaker 0

She has because I think, if I remember correctly, you got Tuco and he's got scowling to the camera.

Speaker 0

It's a great photo.

Speaker 4

Vince directed that photo session.

Speaker 0

Oh, you did?

Speaker 1

I did happen to be there.

Speaker 1

We were there and it was was that episode eight or episode 10?

Speaker 4

It was during

Speaker 1

the You weren't directing.

Speaker 1

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 1

Because you were Michelle was not directing.

Speaker 1

She was helping me with the photo.

Speaker 1

And Ursula was taking the pictures.

Speaker 1

And so it was during the during the shooting of episode eight when we first meet Donnell Adio.

Speaker 4

When Tio's in his flashback makeup.

Speaker 1

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 1

当然。

Of course.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Of course, it was eight because Tio's not in.

Speaker 1

Obviously not in.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So yeah.

Speaker 1

So so Mark Margolis, plays Tio, was in his flashback younger makeup.

Speaker 1

And we we put a different shirt on him, and we shot it in a corner of that of that outdoor area within 10 feet of the pool that you see in in all those scenes.

Speaker 1

And we had two little boys, two very cute little twin boys who played the cousins.

Speaker 1

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

Two little babies who were crying and carrying on a little bit as little babies do, but they were they were perfect.

Speaker 1

And then the the the slightly older boy who plays Tuco, and I'm sorry.

Speaker 1

I apologize.

Speaker 1

I can't remember his name, but he was a good little actor because I was as first of I was snapping the pictures, I was kinda directing him.

Speaker 1

I was like I was like, look look mean.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Look mean.

Speaker 1

To to frown.

Speaker 1

Frown a little bit more.

Speaker 1

He did a great job.

Speaker 4

He was the sweetest little boy.

Speaker 4

可爱

Sweet

Speaker 1

little boy.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

His I think his little brother wants to be an actor.

Speaker 0

哦,

Oh,

Speaker 4

好的。

okay.

Speaker 4

But he got picked to be in this photo.

Speaker 4

It was a little family friction.

Speaker 1

And Mark was, you know, obviously in character as as Hector, as T.

Speaker 1

O。

O.

Speaker 1

And, you know, the so it was fun.

Speaker 1

It was fun to it was fun to yeah.

Speaker 0

It's totally cool.

Speaker 0

I I that was one where I stopped my DVD player and I had to roll back.

Speaker 0

Oh my god.

Speaker 0

That's so cute.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It was very

Speaker 0

cute.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Me ask you about the letter grid, Tio's letter grid, where that comes from.

Speaker 0

And also, I gotta say that Tio's nurse was incredible.

Speaker 1

Wasn't she great?

Speaker 1

Myra.

Speaker 0

She was really fun.

Speaker 1

Myra who plays I didn't realize until we cast her, although I think this is fun.

Speaker 1

I think this is a neat detail.

Speaker 1

But Myra plays Elizabeth Moss's mom on Mad Men.

Speaker 1

And we love Elizabeth.

Speaker 1

She's she's such a sweetie and such a fine actress and a great show, Mad Men.

Speaker 1

And, yeah, Myra plays Lizzie's mom and is great on that show.

Speaker 1

And I didn't really and I've certainly seen her many times on the show.

Speaker 1

I've seen every episode she was in.

Speaker 1

I've seen every episode of Mad Men.

Speaker 1

But I didn't realize it was her.

Speaker 1

And she came in red for us, and she was just really, really funny.

Speaker 0

So when that grid because it was funny when when we were working on the episodes, I never really I never saw 13.

Speaker 0

In fact, I don't think I've ever even saw any dailies from 13.

Speaker 0

Because Skip and I were so busy that I just kept hearing these letters, and I kept I thought it was a Ouija board.

Speaker 0

I couldn't remember.

Speaker 0

And so last night when I was watching the episode, I was like, oh, that's what that is.

Speaker 0

就像,A,排,A,A,B,C。

And it's like, a, row a, a, b, c.

Speaker 0

So is that a real thing that actually is okay.

Speaker 1

Our prop department made that specific board.

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 1

I I don't know if I guess there's a name for the what the board is.

Speaker 1

I mean, it's a communication board, I guess.

Speaker 1

I think it's what we call it in the script.

Speaker 1

But I mean, they don't I don't know that anybody mass markets them.

Speaker 1

Maybe they do, but but not a clear plastic one.

Speaker 1

I wanted to be able to shoot through it.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

Because I because I saw a lot of obvious opportunities to shoot, you know, through it to see T.

Speaker 1

O。

O.

Speaker 1

Or to see the purse to see Myra, you know, and and so our guys created it.

Speaker 1

But that is the layout of it, in fact, is the correct layout for that's you know, God bless folks who

Speaker 6

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That's the way that that's their sole way of communicating.

Speaker 1

Whether they can blink their eye or or ding a bell or or or or whatever.

Speaker 1

So yeah.

Speaker 0

I also was laughing my butt off because you were like, do you have to make poopy?

Speaker 1

Do you

Speaker 0

have a poopy?

Speaker 0

I was like, you've got to be kidding.

Speaker 0

在

In

Speaker 3

that moment as an audience member, like, hate Teo, but you actually kinda feel bad about

Speaker 0

对。

it.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

And and and part of it by design is is it it, you know, you gotta really hate someone to blow yourself up just in order to get them.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But part of it is, you know, to show that his world is such that for this particular guy checking out is maybe not the worst the worst thing conceivable.

Speaker 1

You know, like He

Speaker 0

can take this motherfucker with it.

Speaker 1

If he can take his most most hated enemy with him.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Well, you know, it's I guess it's a great time to get to talk to Bill about the prosthetics and everything that was involved in getting, you know, this head of Gus's.

Speaker 1

Well, let's by the way, what's the title of the episode?

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 1

Face Off.

Speaker 0

Oh, is that it?

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Oh, that's great.

Speaker 0

When did you guys decide this?

Speaker 1

This must have been, like,

Speaker 0

the last hour.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Like like a few like late last week.

Speaker 1

Really?

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Oh, I had no idea.

Speaker 0

Oh, so you're not gonna release it, though.

Speaker 0

Are you gonna re did you release it?

Speaker 0

还是?

Or?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

I mean, the folks the folks listening and watching this will know that it's titled

Speaker 0

Face Off before Wow.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Because I just I love Nic Cage.

Speaker 1

What can I say?

Speaker 1

And his movies.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

This is that's a great title.

Speaker 0

I love it.

Speaker 0

That's fantastic.

Speaker 1

That that title came to us.

Speaker 1

Susan Goldberg, one of our executives at AMC.

Speaker 1

What's her official title?

Speaker 4

She thinks she's vice president of production at AMC.

Speaker 1

And she is a character.

Speaker 1

She's a cutie.

Speaker 1

She's very sweet.

Speaker 1

And she really should have her own talk show.

Speaker 1

She was really funny.

Speaker 1

Because she came up with the name.

Speaker 1

But I think she's a little surprised and dismayed that we're using

Speaker 4

I think she was doing it with a little I think she was trying to have a little fun with you.

Speaker 4

But you showed her.

Speaker 1

I showed her.

Speaker 0

Well, let me ask you this, though, because

Speaker 1

Well, let's talk about how the Face Off was was affected.

Speaker 0

Because, Bill, did you you do you do the prosthetics or did No.

Speaker 0

不。

No.

Speaker 0

That was that was Nick Nikatera?

Speaker 0

你是在

You were

Speaker 1

talking Greg.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Go ahead.

Speaker 4

So it I this is a, you know, a big effort with production and post production who brought in, you know, Bill on the visual effects side and departments.

Speaker 4

And K and B, Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger.

Speaker 0

And those are the guys that do the stuff for Mad Men.

Speaker 0

I mean, sorry, not Mad Men, but Dead.

Speaker 0

Dead.

Speaker 4

And who did episode one for us, the slitting of the throat, who did the ear in episode four.

Speaker 1

Mike's ear would've got shot off or the tip of it.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 4

So this was it was absolutely a a group effort.

Speaker 4

But we we got every Michelle and Stu and I got everybody on the phone early on to talk about Vince's vision for the scene and how we might achieve that vision.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Because that was early in the game.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

That was really, really early.

Speaker 1

This is there's months of of of effort went into this.

Speaker 1

回到

Back in

Speaker 6

January, I think.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

And we there was it was back in January you first heard about it?

Speaker 6

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

That's when you just came in and you said that you wanted to Face Off Somebody.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

But you wouldn't

Speaker 6

explain who it was and you just wanted me to think about how to pull that off.

Speaker 6

And at that time, you were still clear that you wanted it to be in one shot.

Speaker 6

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 6

Without cutting away.

Speaker 6

And you wanted to have the camera swing around.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Pull the mic up.

Speaker 6

You seem to have the vision for exactly what you wanted back in January.

Speaker 6

And it was just about figuring out that much time to

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 6

Figure out to do the effect.

Speaker 1

And we finally shot the actual footage that supported it that you worked upon in June.

Speaker 1

So, yeah, there there was quite a gosh.

Speaker 1

I didn't realize it was that early that I was talking to you about it.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It was we luckily, we were blessed on this show in general that and may it always be thus that we have had the lead time we've needed to do the kind of things that we do because yeah.

Speaker 1

Because I always did want this to be a wonder.

Speaker 1

In other words, as you see in the episode, boom, the door blows off in an amazing explosion, amazing example of special effects work, not visual effects Practical visual.

Speaker 1

Practical special effects.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

Werner and his crew what the hell's wrong with it?

Speaker 1

What's Werner's last name?

Speaker 1

Heinlein.

Speaker 1

Werner Heinlein.

Speaker 1

He's a great guy and his crew.

Speaker 1

That door gets blown off its hinges as a practical effect with a bunch of air mortars, a bunch of tanks filled with compressed air at very actually compressed nitrogen.

Speaker 1

Compressed air would have shown trails of gas as it rapidly depressurized.

Speaker 1

It would have, I guess, little air crystals little ice crystals would have formed and you would have seen big enormous jets of white smoke.

Speaker 1

So they had to use nitrogen.

Speaker 1

They had to fill pure nitrogen they had to use in these enormous dump tanks filled with highly compressed gas, nitrogen.

Speaker 1

And then they have these rapid dump valves that kick wide open instantly, and they're kicked open by these electrical solenoids.

Speaker 1

And they use this very high if you stood in front of it, it would have killed you.

Speaker 1

And they blow the door off its hinges with with no gunpowder explosion, but just with pure release of of compressed gas.

Speaker 1

And that comes off.
