EP252 The Perfection Trap in the Trades With Eric Kaiser (December 2025)

This episode is a solo cast, another one.

Speaker 0

It's from Eric Kiser, and the title, this is the perfection trap in the trades.

Speaker 0

I give you a couple quotes from the episode and possibly get your your mind, your taste wetted, and get you to move on to the rest of the episode.

Speaker 0

Good enough isn't a fixed point.

Speaker 0

It's a moving target shaped by goals, expectations, and consequences.

Speaker 0

Perfection can push us forward but can also quietly pull us off track.

Speaker 0

That's an interesting one.

Speaker 0

If I deliver what I promise and the time promise using the resources promised, that is good enough for me.

Speaker 0

And then a final one, final quote, the real skill is knowing when extra effort adds value and when it just adds ego.

Speaker 0

Hey.

Speaker 0

This is gonna be a good episode.

Speaker 0

Welcome back to the Building HVAC Science Podcast.

Speaker 1

Eric Kiser here.

Speaker 1

I'm solo on this episode.

Speaker 1

We've had some requests for monologue podcasts, so we're gonna try that out and see how well it works.

Speaker 1

On this episode, I'm asking myself the question, can good enough be perfect?

Speaker 1

And this is actually a question I've asked myself in real life quite a number of times, really, and I've found it to be very situational and subjective and have a lot of parameters to consider.

Speaker 1

One of the big things is, when we consider this, that perfectionism runs deep for many of us, especially in the trades.

Speaker 1

I've met a lot of people in the trades that are or have perfectionist tendencies, and it's a high level of perfectionism many times.

Speaker 1

Now, this perfectionism can be a help or a hindrance sometimes, because it drives us to be better than ourselves all the time, and sometimes better than those around us as we perceive what better is and what perfection is.

Speaker 1

Now, if you spend much time in online forums, you're probably gonna realize that perfection is not the same for everyone, much like good enough is not the same for everyone.

Speaker 1

And I'm going to answer the question that I asked right now at the beginning, and that is, I think good enough can be perfect with some caveats.

Speaker 1

We're gonna get into those in a little bit, so keep listening along if you wanna learn more.

Speaker 1

I wanna take you to a quote from Dan Holohan's Dead Men's Steam School.

Speaker 1

Now this quote is one of my favorite quotes about good enough, and it layers in a little bit of perfectionism as well.

Speaker 1

The quote is, a hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills, but never know my name, and that will be good enough for me.

Speaker 1

I love that quote for many, many reasons.

Speaker 1

It speaks to me, and it speaks to my perfectionist side, which I do struggle with from time to time, but it also says, hey, this is good enough.

Speaker 1

Now that's a pretty high level of good enough.

Speaker 1

First off, whatever you're doing is gonna have to be around in a hundred years.

Speaker 1

It's gonna have to last a hundred years, and in a hundred years or more, somebody is going to have to see what you did.

Speaker 1

They're gonna have to look at what you did, and they're gonna have to marvel at it.

Speaker 1

So you've gotta have a pretty high level of skills for someone to marvel at whatever you're doing in a hundred years.

Speaker 1

And probably not knowing my name or knowing your name, whoever it is, that's probably a pretty good chance, because sometimes we don't necessarily sign our work.

Speaker 1

But all of that would be good enough for me.

Speaker 1

This can also get us into trouble because if we approach every situation that way, we're going to be working at a pretty high level, and that might not meet the goals.

Speaker 1

In today's parlance, good enough has become synonymous with low quality work in many cases.

Speaker 1

We'll hear sayings like, Looks good for my house, good enough for government work, good enough for who it's for, all of those I've actually said myself, and in the context that may have been appropriate.

Speaker 1

But looking back, maybe they weren't necessarily appropriate either.

Speaker 1

So that good enough is very much a moving target.

Speaker 1

We mentioned earlier there's a lot of parameters around that.

Speaker 1

So let's dig into some of those parameters and a few other things that may set good enough to perfect.

Speaker 1

Some of these are and where this is a big one, I think, what is the goal of whatever it is we're doing?

Speaker 1

What kind of time frame does this need to be achieved in?

Speaker 1

What things can we leave out or not do and still meet our goal?

Speaker 1

Now, lot of people may mention a rule called the eightytwenty rule.

Speaker 1

The eightytwenty rule says that 80% of your outcome is done by 20% of your work.

Speaker 1

That doesn't necessarily mean that 80% is good enough because we need to hit a 100% of our goal in order to be perfect in this situation.

Speaker 1

Now that only may be 80% of the way to absolute perfection, but in that case, good enough might just be perfect.

Speaker 1

What are potential outcomes?

Speaker 1

So if we leave something out, maybe it's only gonna last fifty years instead of a hundred years.

Speaker 1

Is that okay?

Speaker 1

Is that acceptable?

Speaker 1

Are we gonna do something to a building or a mechanical item that should probably only last twenty years, but we are gonna do it to such a high level that it's gonna last fifty years or a hundred years?

Speaker 1

Doesn't seem that spending that extra time and effort would really be worth it if the rest of something is going to fail in a much shorter time than the work we put into it.

Speaker 1

So maybe we don't need to do as much work.

Speaker 1

What are the expectations?

Speaker 1

We have to understand the expectations of many different facets.

Speaker 1

For working for somebody, we need to understand the customer's expectations, and in order to do that, we're going to have to communicate with them really well.

Speaker 1

We need to understand our employer's expectations, maybe our coworkers' expectations, because if you've ever worked around somebody that's a perfectionist, they can shame you into doing things better, we'll say.

Speaker 1

Maybe we work in a regulated area where we have inspections done, or permits that need to be pulled, and we have to do things to a certain standard.

Speaker 1

Well, if we're meeting or exceeding that standard, that would be considered good enough.

Speaker 1

And you also have to consider yourself.

Speaker 1

Now this is perhaps one of the most important factors to me, and I think to a lot of people out there, because as someone who strives for perfection a lot, I'm very hard on myself.

Speaker 1

I can be probably harder on myself than anybody else is because I really want that perfection, and I've had to learn how to scale that back over the years.

Speaker 1

Sometimes I still get stuck in that searching for absolute perfection, but we have to answer to ourselves.

Speaker 1

And I'll use an example of, we'll say, working on a fuel fired appliance, like a gas furnace or a gas boiler that's in a building or a house.

Speaker 1

My level of perfection says that I have to do a combustion analysis on that, and I have to do that because of knowledge, because of things I've learned over my career, and not everybody has that same level of knowledge or the tools necessary to do it.

Speaker 1

Does that mean they shouldn't do it?

Speaker 1

Really, that depends on their level of comfort, but my level of comfort says that I need to do a combustion analysis, and to me, something is not going to be perfect until I do a combustion analysis if I have to work on a fuel fired appliance.

Speaker 1

So that is a really great example, I think, of differing levels of perfectionism.

Speaker 1

Some people are gonna walk up and set the gas pressure.

Speaker 1

Some people are gonna look at it and say, hey, that flame's blue.

Speaker 1

It's burning great.

Speaker 1

That is good enough for me.

Speaker 1

And we can all have those different levels, and we can all accept that we're all different, and each one of us has a different level of good enough.

Speaker 1

So provided that when I go into a situation that I set the expectations well, and I set up a lot of the parameters that we discussed earlier.

Speaker 1

And when I'm done, I ask myself three questions.

Speaker 1

Did I deliver what was promised?

Speaker 1

Was it done in the timeframe promised?

Speaker 1

And was it done using the resources promised?

Speaker 1

Now, those promises could be to a customer, to a coworker, maybe to a spouse, maybe to myself.

Speaker 1

But if I get three yeses from those three questions, then I tend to consider whatever I did good enough for me.

Speaker 1

Now, hopefully, this episode has sparked some thought in you about what might be good enough for you and what's good enough for those around you.
