and this is a pretty common scenario.

The student said, it's really interesting to me because every time I hear it, I don't expect it and I wonder why people use it in that way.

Let's dive into these different ways.

It's really three different ways, but two of them are very related.

So the first one is we use this to show understanding or reluctant agreement, right?

It sort of means like, I understand your point.

You accept what someone says, even if you don't love it or you don't 100% agree.

Yeah, so we could do this as a little role play here.

I can be the first person.

That's well said,

这是'fair enough'的第一种用法。

That's the first use of fair enough.

What would be the second use of it?

这个和第一种用法非常相关。

This one is very related to that first one.

某种程度上是为了表示某事听起来合理或可接受。

Sort of to show that something sounds reasonable or acceptable.

所以你认同对方说的话有道理。

So you think what the other person said makes sense.

Okay.

Yeah.

So for example, we need to increase the budget if we want better results.

有道理。

Fair enough.

That's a good point.

So you're kind of sharing that maybe you hadn't thought of things this way.

Something we really often say off the cuff, right?

Or just sort of as we're thinking like, okay, that sounds reasonable.

We'll say, fair enough.

So, I mean, very similar usages between the two categories, right?

It's not like we're saying these, they mean, it means something completely different in these different contexts,

We also say a similar phrase, which is just that's fair, means the exact same thing.

These are very interchangeable.

我也可以说'I knew it was unlikely with such short notice'。

I could also say I that's knew it was unlikely with such short notice.

这个短语和第二个例子甚至更具互换性，对吧？

And this is even more interchangeable with this second one, right?

因为它只是表示'这很合理'的意思。

Because it just means like, that makes sense.

我还听到有些人会简化为只说'fair'，对吧？

I also hear some people just shortening that and just saying fair, right?

公平。

Fair.

这样公平吗？

That's fair?

公平。

Fair.

完全正确。

Absolutely.

或者把'足够公平'简化为'公平'。

Or shortening fair enough to just Fair.

Yeah, there's a lot

of ways we could do it.

And then just in a very similar vibe, slightly different, to politely end a disagreement.

Meaning, okay, let's move on.

Right?

So, here's an example.

I still believe my approach is better.

Fair enough.

我们各自保留意见吧。

Let's agree to disagree.

This is interesting.

有趣的是我们说'有道理'时，其实完全不表示我们实际认同或认为某事合理的程度。

It's interesting how we'll say fair enough and it really means nothing about how much we actually agree how much something makes sense.

除非你从对方那里得到详细信息，否则你并不真正了解。

You don't really know unless you get details from the person.

是的，这并不完全是在说‘是的，我100%同意你’。

Yeah, this is not fully saying, Yes, I 100% agree with you.

这只是在说‘好吧’。

It's just saying, Okay.

It's kind of saying, Okay.

Exactly.

如果我们真的、真的意见相左，比如在进行政治话题讨论时对方说了我们完全反对的观点，我们很可能不会说'有道理'，因为这句话确实暗示了对方的部分观点是合理或合乎逻辑的。

If we really, really disagreed, like if we're having maybe a political conversation and someone says something we totally disagree with, we probably wouldn't say fair enough because it does imply a little bit of what the other person is saying makes sense or is logical.

So there are other things, we've gone over this in past episodes of things we can say that's like just agree to disagree or interesting point, something that doesn't imply we agree Yeah, at least a little

It's like, okay, maybe, I don't know.

And I think we have one more example here, Aubrey.

and at work, it would really be exhausting to work with a person who's fighting every battle and like never negotiating, never compromising.

we're all about how to build relationships at and find connection.

And this is interesting because you may have thought of this as very casual vocabulary, but this sounds very normal to me.

And we would still hear these phrases.

They're sort of very phrases about compromise.

Yeah, wouldn't worry about this being informal or anything.

I mean, are a lot of phrases that can cross the boundary between work This and is one of them,

You're like, fair enough.

Yeah, in some ways this is how not to micromanage at work.

And it's just a great phrase to be polite when you're compromising.

Are a lot of ways if you're negotiating in some way, a lot of these examples, you're sort of compromising.

You can do that in sort of a hurt irritated way that's slightly more rude.

Fair enough is really a polite way to do this.
