Have you ever finished a conversation in English and thought, I know I can say that better.

Speaker 0

You understood everything that was said.

Speaker 0

You had ideas, opinions, maybe even a joke.

Speaker 0

But when it was your turn to speak, your answer came out shorter than you wanted or more basic than how you would say it in your own language.

Speaker 0

This happens when your understanding is stronger than your speaking fluency.

Speaker 0

Speaker 0

Hey, Lindsay.

Speaker 0

How are you?

Speaker 1

Doing great today, Michelle.

Speaker 1

What are we getting into on business English?

Speaker 0

Lindsey,

Well, Lindsey, do you like to wear hats?

Speaker 1

To wear hats?

Speaker 1

I'm not a big hat person, to be honest, because I feel like it kinda ruins my hair, and my hair is So my big what about you?

Speaker 1

Are you a hat wearer?

Speaker 0

It really can't really fall in love with a hat.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 0

I I try.

Speaker 0

They never really seem to work out for me.

Speaker 0

Every once in a while, I will find more of a hat that's a shape that I really do like.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

But, yeah, I agree.

Speaker 0

It's then with the hair, it's a whole mess.

Speaker 0

So It never looks good.

Speaker 0

I mean But they are important.

Speaker 0

They are important, especially when it's super sunny.

Speaker 0

So I should.

Speaker 1

没错。

Totally.

Speaker 1

I know.

Speaker 1

I've been wearing them more since I moved to Colorado.

Speaker 1

The sun out here is crazy strong, so you kind of have to.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But then you cut well, you got for me, what I have to do is just commit to the hat all day until I take a shower.

Speaker 0

If I'm gonna take

Speaker 1

shower, fine.

Speaker 1

But like, if I'm not showering, if I I'm just gonna have the hat on the rest of the day.

Speaker 0

You got some pretty pretty bad hat hair?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

For sure.

Speaker 1

But today we're not talking about hat hair.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Although that would be a fun episode.

Speaker 0

That would be a fun episode.

Speaker 1

We're talking about something that applies to business about being busy and being responsible for many different things.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

So this is to wear many hats.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Lindsay, do you wear many hats at All Ears English?

Speaker 1

Oh my god.

Speaker 1

Wild guess, Michelle.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 0

Yes.

Speaker 0

Of course.

Speaker 0

So you probably wear a 100 hats.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Was just having beers with a friend yesterday, and she just bought her own company, bought a new company, similar size as ours.

Speaker 1

And she was going going through it, talking about all of the things that didn't realize she'd be doing on a daily basis.

Speaker 1

So, you know, things regarding just state, like employment stuff in different states.

Speaker 1

There's just accounting and taxes and all these things that you think you're gonna do the business of the business, but actually you're gonna do a lot of things as an owner of a small company.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I see that with, you know, because we have the dental office, and so I definitely.

Speaker 0

It's just so much that goes into these things.

Speaker 0

没错。

That's Yep.

Speaker 0

对。

Yep.

Speaker 0

Especially at the start, you know, when you're really trying to take on as much as you can by, like, with, you know, without too too many people because you don't have the budget for too too many people.

Speaker 0

So you're just trying to, like you wear a ton of hats.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You don't have, like, a whole a ton you don't have an HR department necessarily.

Speaker 1

You don't have a payroll department.

Speaker 1

Know?

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

You know, you're just this is a scrappy entrepreneurship here that we're talking about.

Speaker 1

But even in big companies, this also applies.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

对。

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

I mean, I actually think of I think of I don't know if it was one particular old movie or something, but do you ever see like, when somebody there may have been something actually where somebody is changing hats, like an I love Lucy or something, you know, something like that.

Speaker 0

But like, it makes me think of when it's like, oh, me talk to the manager.

Speaker 0

I am the manager.

Speaker 0

Or like, I am the mayor.

Speaker 0

Or I you know what I mean?

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

They put on a different hat or a different

Speaker 0

uniform or something.

Speaker 0

Policeman, firefighter, man.

Speaker 0

Right.

Speaker 0

没错。

So yeah.

Speaker 0

I'm sure there's actually a specific thing, but I can't think of what it's from.

Speaker 0

But, that's that's what it makes me think of.

Speaker 1

That's the vibe.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

That's the vibe.

Speaker 0

Let's use it in a sentence.

Speaker 0

Lindsay,

You wanna do the first one, Lindsay?

Speaker 0

Oh, this is more than one sentence, but yeah.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So we couldn't live without Millie here.

Speaker 1

She wears so many hats.

Speaker 1

Not only is she our boss, but she's our friend.

Speaker 1

She helps us with everything and she's so smart about so many areas within the company.

Speaker 1

Alright.

Speaker 1

Wow.

Speaker 1

That's a lot.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

Many hats.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

It's hard to tell you about my job because I wear so many hats, but I'll try.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

There are some people Lindsay, do you have any friends where you have no idea what they actually do?

Speaker 1

Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1

And when they explain it, my eyes kind of glaze over.

Speaker 1

Yes.

Speaker 1

就只是

Just

Speaker 0

not familiar with it.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yep.

Speaker 1

That happens.

Speaker 1

Usually that's more like for larger companies.

Speaker 0

If people work in large Corporate.

Speaker 0

Companies certain

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Or sometimes it's exhausting wearing so many hats, but it's good to know I'm needed.

Speaker 1

没错。

That's true.

Speaker 1

That can be a good feeling, I guess, sometimes.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

When you have the bandwidth.

Speaker 0

对。

Right.

Speaker 0

When you have the bandwidth and you know that you are needed because you do so much.

Speaker 0

But yeah, in this sentence, it doesn't mean it's exhausting putting on so many actual hats.

Speaker 0

So we just wanna be aware of the context.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

But, Lindsey, do you think it's a good thing to wear many hats at work?

Speaker 1

I think it's a good thing.

Speaker 1

I think it's fine.

Speaker 1

I think it's normal.

Speaker 1

And it's smart in the beginning because you just can't especially if you're starting a company and it's a small company, you're just not gonna be able to afford to hire people in all these departments like they would have in corporate.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

But it can be scattering.

Speaker 1

Like, you can feel very scattered.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

And sometimes you just want to sit down and do the work of the business.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

The dream work.

Speaker 1

For Right.

Speaker 1

Me, dream work is podcasting.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

You know, podcasting is is a small portion of my week.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

But, yeah.

Speaker 0

So, I mean, why but why is this expression useful?

Speaker 1

I think you can use it to describe your own job.

Speaker 1

We do ask people.

Speaker 1

I was just at a meditation event last night.

Speaker 1

There was a little socializing moment and there were three of us chatting.

Speaker 1

And one woman asked, so what do you both do for work?

Speaker 1

I mean, even at a meditation event, people are asking you, what do you do for work?

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

Some people will lead with this.

Speaker 1

I think more so on the East Coast than in this area, but people lead with it.

Speaker 1

So to say, you know, you could incorporate this into your answer potentially.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 0

Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 0

Well, I wear many hats, right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

So yeah, you can, and it also could show you're a team player.

Speaker 0

There's a lot of things that it can show or that in ways that it connect you to others.

Speaker 0

So, but there are other things that we can say that are not dealing with hats that can express similar ideas.

Speaker 0

So the first one is to serve or play multiple roles.

Speaker 0

对。

Yes.

Speaker 0

This one's a little bit more professional sounding, Just a a little bit elevated.

Speaker 0

So she serves multiple roles, so she is invaluable to our team.

Speaker 1

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So companies have roles, and usually they're linked to positions.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

So that would be one way to say that.

Speaker 1

Let's take a quick break, Michelle, and then we'll come back with more.

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

行。

Alright.

Speaker 1

Michelle,

So, Michelle, any question we want to ask here?

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Do you think that it's any many people would like wearing many hats?

Speaker 1

That's a good question.

Speaker 1

I think there are, like, people who are more generalists and then people who are more specialists.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

And some people like being generalists, some people like being specialists.

Speaker 1

I think it depends on the way that you like to think maybe.

Speaker 1

Like, do you like to go deep and really nerd out on one thing?

Speaker 1

Or do you want to kind of stay above and keep, like, a wide angle lens on a lot of things and understand how they fit together.

Speaker 0

Think people people are thrive on just doing many different things learning as much as they can about

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

You know, different roles.

Speaker 0

Some and some people might find that exhausting or frustrating, especially if it's something, you know, with their job description and they've been given, you know, they might find it frustrating, but others might say, Oh great.

Speaker 0

I, you know, I have this attitude where I am happy to give anything a But you know, I think there's a line.

Speaker 1

没错, definitely。

Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1

It's it's definitely personality based.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

And people just think in different ways.

Speaker 1

Some people think in a more linear way, and they do want to, like, spend more energy on the one thing.

Speaker 1

And other people think in maybe a more horizontal way.

Speaker 1

I don't know.

Speaker 1

And they just need that wider perspective.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

So, interesting.

Speaker 1

Another thing you could say is I do a bit of everything.

Speaker 1

So, I do a bit of everything around here from marketing to tech to accounting.

Speaker 1

I like the variety.

Speaker 0

是的

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

对

Mhmm.

Speaker 0

Or I perform various tasks.

Speaker 0

是啊

So Mhmm.

Speaker 0

My job keeps me on my toes because I perform various tasks.

Speaker 0

None of my days ever look the same.

Speaker 1

没错

Yeah.

Speaker 1

And here's this buzzword that I hear a lot in the real corporate world, which is cross functional.

Speaker 0

对啊

Yep.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 1

对啊

Yep.

Speaker 1

So this is used in a lot of different ways.

Speaker 1

They talk about cross functional teams, people that come together in a team, but they serve different roles in the company, different departments maybe.

Speaker 1

But this sample sentence is, my role is really cross functional here, which is good because I learned so much.

Speaker 1

So that person is crossing over to like, getting exposure to different departments probably.

Speaker 0

对啊

Yep.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Yep.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

Should we do a role play?

Speaker 1

Yes.

Speaker 1

Let's do it.

Speaker 1

So here, Michelle, we are friends at work and we're talking about our jobs.

Speaker 1

Alright?

Speaker 0

Alright.

Speaker 0

Here we go.

Speaker 0

Things have gotten really exciting in my department recently.

Speaker 1

Oh, that's great.

Speaker 1

What have you been working on?

Speaker 0

Oh, so much.

Speaker 0

I wear many hats.

Speaker 0

So I've been working a little on the Joni Foundation, but have also stepped into IT a lot.

Speaker 1

That is great.

Speaker 1

So you do a bit of everything.

Speaker 1

That's how I am too, to be honest.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

It keeps things interesting when my role is more cross functional.

Speaker 1

Same here.

Speaker 1

I love playing multiple roles.

Speaker 1

I'm doing a presentation next month, and today I'm doing ground marketing.

Speaker 1

It's great.

Speaker 0

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 0

I know you're so good at performing various tasks.

Speaker 1

Thanks.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 1

That does seem more appealing to me.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Because you just like things are always changing.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

It's not like the same thing every single day.

Speaker 0

Right, right.

Speaker 0

It's hard to feel like for things to feel mundane when they're always changed.

Speaker 1

They're always changing, exactly.

Speaker 1

So again, what have you been working on?

Speaker 1

And you said so much.

Speaker 1

I wear many hats.

Speaker 1

So I've been working a little on the Joni Foundation.

Speaker 0

Yes, you know.

Speaker 0

Know the Joni Foundation.

Speaker 0

And then you say, that's great.

Speaker 0

So you do a bit of everything.

Speaker 0

That's how I am too.

Speaker 1

And then you said, yeah, it keeps things interesting when my role is more cross functional.

Speaker 1

And this is interesting for our listeners.

Speaker 1

More cross functional than what?

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

比……

Than

Speaker 1

不是。

not.

Speaker 1

Than then not.

Speaker 1

It's more it's just interesting how we do say this sometimes.

Speaker 1

It's more cross functional than we stop, and that's an acceptable sentence.

Speaker 1

But, like, what are we comparing it to?

Speaker 0

Right.

Speaker 0

没错。

Right.

Speaker 0

Right.

Speaker 0

对的。

Right.

Speaker 0

Wouldn't we know because of what we've already been talking about, right?

Speaker 0

Like have context here.

Speaker 0

We know what's going on.

Speaker 1

Yeah, totally.

Speaker 1

Then what did I say?

Speaker 0

Then you said, Same here.

Speaker 0

I love playing multiple roles.

Speaker 0

I'm doing a presentation next month and today I'm doing ground marketing.

Speaker 0

It's great.

Speaker 1

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 1

And you said nice.

Speaker 1

I know you're so good at performing various tasks.

Speaker 0

Okay.

Speaker 0

One's

Speaker 1

a sounding there, thinly.

Speaker 1

A formal, yeah.

Speaker 0

A little bit awkward.

Speaker 1

A little awkward.

Speaker 1

That one, I'd probably say, what would you sub in there instead

Speaker 0

of like saying yeah.

Speaker 0

I also like, I'm I'm also invigorated by performing various tasks, or I I I get my energy by performing various tasks.

Speaker 0

I don't know.

Speaker 1

Well, I know you're so good at doing a lot of different things at Yeah.

Speaker 0

Lot of different things.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Even just switching out the phrase completely.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

是的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

对

Yeah.

Speaker 1

A little too formal there, but a little.

Speaker 1

I'd like the rest of the role play.

Speaker 1

So guys go to Business English five fifty one, a clean and clear way to say someone is right in English.

Speaker 1

Good skill to have.

Speaker 1

Right?

Speaker 0

没错。

Yes.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

Takeaway for today.

Speaker 0

I think it's really, you know, about personality types.

Speaker 0

It shows a lot about who you are.

Speaker 0

Like, do you and and I don't think any one is better or worse than the other.

Speaker 1

当然。

Sure.

Speaker 0

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

But I'm sure in certain companies like, if you're a person that is does not wanna do play multiple roles And you walk into a new job and it turns out, you you know, you were promised something, and then it turns out you're doing a whole lot more.

Speaker 0

You know?

Speaker 0

I could see how that could be frustrating for someone.

Speaker 0

But Yeah.

Speaker 0

Many people may find it fun and exciting.

Speaker 0

It really just depends.

Speaker 1

I also think these terms could play into a conversation about AI in the future.

Speaker 1

哦。

Oh.

Speaker 1

Because we know that AI is going to disrupt every industry.

Speaker 1

The question is like, what types of jobs are gonna be more disrupted than others?

Speaker 1

Is it more the specialists Or is it more the generalists that do do multiple things around, like, work cross functionally?

Speaker 1

Or is it specialists that go very deep into one skill?

Speaker 1

That's a really good good conversation starter.

Speaker 0

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

Definitely.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

Super interesting.

Speaker 0

Well, Lindsay, I'm glad we talked about this today.

Speaker 0

And, yeah, I will talk to you next time.

Speaker 1

Alright, Michelle.

Speaker 1

Talk soon.

Speaker 0

Bye.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

再见。

Bye.
