I think you joined us in, I wanna say 2019.
It was sort of right before the pandemic, wasn't Correct.
对。
Yes.
So about seven years ago.
Coming up on That's seven right.
I was first a co host of IELTS Energy and then All Ears English.
Now here we are on the Business English Podcast as well.
All three.
It's so fun.
So yeah,
you may have noticed I used this phrase, here we are.
Today we're answering a listener question about this phrase and a few related phrases that we use often at work.
So I'm excited to dive into this.
What a good question.
I'm glad I'm glad our listener asked this question because this is so common in English.
Right?
没错。
Exactly.
Should I should I go ahead and read the question, Aubrey?
好的。
Yes.
好。
Okay.
The listener says, hello.
My name is Sumi from Japan, and I really enjoy your podcast.
I have a question.
你们是怎么用“here we are”、“here you go”和“there you go”这些短语的?
How do you use here we are, here you go, and there you go, etcetera?
I'm confused about which one is appropriate in each situation.
Thank you for your great work.
Best, Sumi.
Such a good question and yes we use these all the time in daily conversations as well but we use them a lot at work.
So we wanted to bring this to you here to focus a little more on how we use them at work but we will have some examples for daily conversations as well because you'll use them for both definitely.
当然。
For sure.
Aubrey?
Alright, so where should we start today Aubrey?
Yeah, well these are all used to mean different things.
So we will share what each one means, the difference between them, and how you can use each naturally at work and in everyday life.
But first, we wanted to share some recent reviews that were left in Spotify for the Business English Podcast.

We put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears and heart into this show and we want to see what you think about the show.
Alright?
当然。
Absolutely.
对。
Yes.
So definitely leave a review or rating wherever you listen to podcasts.
And let's dive in here, Lindsey.
好的。
Okay.
Here, we're going to start first with these phrases that use here.
比如说,'here we are' 这个短语。
For example, with here we are.
Where can we use this?
When do we use this one?
Well, the most common one is is really just arriving physically or arriving at a moment together.
So it doesn't have to be a physical moment, but you could be sharing a moment with someone.
Right?
What you're going through.
是的。
Yeah.
So for example, if you reach a client's office with a coworker, be like, here we are.
You park, get out.
We would say that all the time arriving somewhere physically.
But also like you said reaching a moment.
Maybe talking about a relationship.
You meet someone online and say here we are still together.
Right?
And in that case it doesn't mean that you physically are somewhere.
You know your partner could be in Australia and you're here and you're saying we've been together seven years, here we are still together.
It's kind of like the idea of saying this is the outcome, right?
没错。
Exactly.
Or if you're starting or you're presenting something, right, you could say, so here we are, Thanks for coming today.
So here you're saying, okay, I'm ready.
I'm ready Exactly.
To get
Yeah, doesn't mean you're physically all there together like we know, but we'll just say that meaning like I'm all set up.
I'm ready to go.
It's sort of this introductory phrase.
Alright, here we are and you'll just dive in and get started.
Yeah, it's I feel like it's a little more polite when you use it that way, right?
Instead of like here we go, right?
对。
True.
There is this slight nuance of politeness of deference deference maybe to who's there.
You might instead of saying here we go.
If you are presenting to a board, right and you're trying to show a little more respect, might say this.
Alright, here we are and then start.
Strange how that's more formal or more polite isn't it?
That's a weird thing.
Yeah, True.
And then lastly, you are settling into a moment, maybe you're meeting at happy hour with some coworkers, right?
And you meet them at the bar, you might say like, here we are, finally getting a drink together.
Just sort of like naming the moment and making it a little more momentous.
没错。
Exactly.
And then the next phrase that the listener mentioned in the question was here you go.
Now how is this one different Aubrey?
好。
Yeah.
This is more about giving or transferring something to someone.
So we use it, for example, when we're handling something.
If I hand someone a drink or their phone, I might say, Here you go.
And I'm just letting them know they might not be looking at me.
And that's often what we'll say to indicate that we're handing something to them.
对。
Right.
So it's kind of a heads up.
Like, hey, put your hands out.
Be ready.
I'm going to give you this drink or this thing, whatever it is.
And interestingly, we'll also say this when we're sending something digitally.
If we're emailing someone, we're attaching a document, we might say, here you go.
So it's not just for handing things physically, but also delivering things digitally.
对。
Yeah.
And speaking of politeness, there's a way to elevate this and be a little more polite.
Aubrey?
What is it, Aubrey?
You might also hear, here you are, which does sound more polite.
Right?
It means the same thing, but it's just slightly more formal.
在日常英语中,“here you go”更常见。
Everyday English, here you go is more common.
我大概不会递饮料给别人时说“here you are”。
I probably wouldn't hand someone a drink and say, here you are.
但在工作中递文件时,我会说“here you are”。
I would at work if I'm handing a document to someone, here you are.
It is slightly more polite.
I guess there are people who in their casual life or daily life might use here you are because they're a little bit more fancy.
确实。
Definitely.
Definitely possible or it might be more common in British English.
This is very much about someone's own personal style.
How you know some people are a lot more casual and informal in their everyday speech.
Yes, that's totally right.
Aubrey?
And what else Aubrey?
What else do we need to know here?
Yeah, and then we just want to also point out that here we go is used to start something with energy or anticipation.
This is really different from these other meanings on the list.
So for example, before a big trip or presentation, we're wanting to make the moment bigger.
We might say, here we go.
Like I'm imagining us on an amusement park ride.
The roller coaster is about to begin and we say here we go.
But we will say this at work sometimes just to sort of drum up importance or excitement about something.
Yeah, there's a lot of different meanings for this depending slight nuance meanings depending on your tone of voice.
Like your example of the roller coaster.
Here we go.
Right?
There's a little trepidation there in your voice.
That's true.
Whereas when I used to play college tennis, I was constantly saying, come on, here we go.
Here we go.
Right?
That's slightly different.
We're trying to amp ourselves up a little bit in a sporting event.
That's a really good point.
Your intonation, your tone will be different depending on the context.
You would not say it the same when a roller coaster is about to start as you would in a meeting.
Right?
没错。
Exactly.
So it changed depending on the feeling that you want to put behind it.
Love it.
So well said.
Okay, Aubrey, what else?
Where do we go from here?
Yeah, let's dive into these phrases beginning with there.
所以,你知道,我们的听众还提到了“there you go”。
So, you know, our listener also mentioned there you go.
What does this mean?
好的,
Okay,
so this basically means that you're acknowledging kind of what someone else is doing, a reaction to what they did.
Right?
没错。
Exactly.
So maybe if I teach a kid to ride a bike and they're doing it correctly, I'd be like, there you go.
Right?
It's just a way of saying, well done, you did it.
Kind of means like you can do it, right?
It's clear that you can do it.
Or the fact that someone understands something, right?
Someone has finally, like the light bulb has come on.
Your friend figures out a grammar rule.
There you go.
That's it.
You got
Exactly, right?
It definitely implies that like there was time, there was work to figure something out.
It takes a kid a little while usually to figure out how to ride a bike.
It's like alright, there you go.
So yeah, these are often, it's not just like you did it.
Something could be very quick and you might just be like awesome, you did it.
Implies work was put in.
Or what about if we want to encourage someone?
Very similar, right?
What would you say?
Yeah, maybe a friend is lifting weights at the gym.
You know, you could say, alright, there you go.
You got this.
Keep going.
And we use this type of thing at work as well.
Like if someone, maybe you're an accountant and you have a pile of documents, right?
And you are struggling with it.
You can imagine a coworker being like, as soon as you finish and they see that you've finished, alright, there you go.
You did it.
Yes, totally.
Again, yeah, or someone exhibits that expected behavior, as we've said.
For example, a friend is always making assumptions.
This is a little bit more negative, right?
But we're saying that we see that you're doing something that we expected you to do.
There you go assuming again, right?
And that could be a little confrontational if you say that.
Yeah, this one's tricky.
So you might say, maybe you have a coworker that's always late and they come in and you're like, there you go, being late again.
And you're trying to be playful and keep it light hearted, but if they're already sensitive about that, maybe they're frustrated, they're having a hard time getting there on time, maybe they've been reprimanded for it, disciplined.
That you could understand, even if you're trying to be playful, it's still critical.
So I would be careful with this one at work.
是的。
Yes.
We talked about this before, but maybe not on the Business English Podcast.
I love that movie.
It's so so funny, and I love how the dad is always explaining how every word comes from Greek.
Right?
对。
Yes.
And he says, so there you go.
After it, he's like Miller comes from the word Greek milo for apple.
So there you go.
So there you go.
Everything makes sense.
And then I think the grandkids started saying it right.
So there you go.
So there you go.
Yes, I love it so much.
And then we have There We Go, which this is interesting.
Focuses more on a shared result or something finally working, right?
Focuses on the situation rather than a person.
对。
Right.
The effort that you've put into something.
Right, like when something finally works.
Maybe you've been fixing the broken WiFi all day long.
You might say, there we go.
It finally works.
I made it work.
是的。
Yes.
And it's interesting how you could be working on fixing the WiFi alone and you're still saying there we go even if no one helped you.
It's just a chunk.
It's this interesting expression.
Yeah, go ahead.
Or even if there's no one around.
Mean it could also, it doesn't mean it's a we like we're all here in this room waiting for you to fix it.
Right?
You could just say it.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
That's what's really interesting about this one.
Oh, there we go.
It's you and who?
没有。
No.
We're still using we even though you did it on your own.
Really interesting.
你
Do you
do you like to fix things?
Do you get a lot of joy, Aubrey, out of, like, fixing household items, that kind of thing?
Sometimes, yeah.
If I am able to figure something out.
I had a conversation with my husband recently about chores that we sort of had assumed were the other persons, right?
He was the one who would fix a bike chain and clean the pool.
And I'm usually making dinner.
And a lot of them are shared.
Like he'll do laundry.
There are a lot of things that were not so designated.
And we kind of talked about it.
What made us decide like because we never had a conversation where like you'll do this and you'll do this.
That's so interesting.
And so every now and then when I take it upon myself to figure out how to do something that I've always sort of just expected him to do.
Yeah, I'm always kind of proud of myself.
You feel good?
Yeah, it's satisfying I'll tell him
I for figured out how to replace the fuse on the freezer.
That's like some big momentous thing, I'm like, I feel like I'm tearing down the patriarchy just one little bit But at a like
one step at a
time doing something I assumed a man would fix.
I'm like, I can do this.
I just can watch a YouTube video and figure out how to do this.
Everything's on YouTube now.
所以
So
we can.
Right?
I mean, yeah,
I love What's the step?
Change the oil on my car.
Uh-oh.
I haven't gotten there yet, but I could.
I know I could do it.
Wow, I bet I'm sure you could absolutely report back to us after you come I next will.
我打算
I'm gonna
去做。
do it.
Maybe I'll wait till January, February.
Right now it's really hot outside, so I'm not gonna be changing the oil in a car right now.
Oh, for sure.
So, that, and that's the next example, right?
Again, finishing a task.
There we go.
All set.
We've just changed the oil in a car.
Right?
没错。
Exactly.
That's what we would say.
好了。
There we go.
And you dust your hands off like done.
Figured it out.
Settling into a moment, which we mentioned with one of these other expressions.
Maybe you're setting up for a party or a movie movie night, and once it's all done, you're ready to settle in the moment.
You'd say, there we go.
Now we can relax.
是的。
Yeah.
Just imagine, like, someone's handing you a beer.
You've just, like, arranged your backyard for a barbecue and they're coming over in half an hour and now you get to just sit and wait for the guest to arrive or something.
Right?
没错。
Exactly.
It kind of just means like we're done.
We're done with that tax.
好了。
There we go.
是的。
Yes.
对。
Yeah.
是的。
Yes.
It's a good feeling.
It's a good feeling.
Any quick notes we need to let our listeners know about?
有。
Yeah.
所以“There We Are”和“There We Go”意思差不多,但语气更柔和一些,也更正式一点。
So There We Are is similar to There We Go, but it is a little bit softer and a little bit more formal.
It's less common.
Maybe you fixed a computer issue for a work colleague and then you'd say, there we are, that should do it.
And it doesn't mean that you did it together.
It is this, it's very slight, these subtle nuances of the tone that it creates if something's a little softer, a little more formal.
So I think a good thing to know here is these are all appropriate for work.
It's just slightly different, the tone you're wanting to set.
对。
Yes.
Tone really matters.
So also listen a lot.
Right?
Listen to native speakers using these and you'll understand the context in which you can use them.
Right?
没错。
Exactly.
Let's do a role play here.
You and I are coworkers that are meeting after work for a happy hour here.
I'll start us out.
好的。
Okay.
Here we go.
Here we are finally meeting for drinks.
It's about time.
I know.
We've been trying to make this happen for ages.
Oh, here you go.
The bartender accidentally gave me your drink, probably because I come here a lot and I always order a mojito.
It looks great.
Thank you for recommending it.
是的。
Yeah.
Let me know what you think.
Oh, it's incredible.
哇。
Wow.
Good call.
There we go.
That's what I was hoping you'd say.
Honestly, I don't know that I would have ever ordered this myself.
I usually go for something sweeter.
Maybe I need to switch it up.
Well, there you go.
You've discovered your new favorite cocktail.
Cheers to that.
不错。
Nice.
I love mojitos.
I like mojitos.
It's my favorite summer drink.
That's a great one.
By a pool or the ocean.
And I often would be like so weak.
It's basically just like lime and seltzer water.
But delicious.
So delicious.
不错。
It's good.
Guys, have another episode to recommend.
Go on over to Business English six zero seven.
That was just a few days ago, I think.
Should you put a stop to at work?
This is such an interesting phrase.
We use it a lot to say we want to put a stop to something and a few similar expressions.
So if you missed that one, scroll up, check it out because that was a really good episode.
Aubrey, what's our final takeaway for today?
Yeah, this is interesting.
These do each have a slightly different meaning.
Right?
Here we are.
给你。
Here you go.
There we go.
There you go.
But I think a really good takeaway is don't shy away from these.
Going to hear them all the time.
You're going to notice them now.
You should be using them.
And they're great both at work and in everyday conversations.
I think these really do build a connection because they're so friendly.
Right?
They're like just taking down that wall of formality that we talk about sometimes to be a little more friendly.
I love that.
Really well put.
They just make you feel kind of closer to the people around you because some of these phrases, like we said, do denote a sense of togetherness too.
我们。
We.
We are saying we even if we're not physically together.
Right?
没错。
Exactly.
Right?
I'm not gonna say, there I go.
不。
No.
There I go.
There we go.
There we are.
确实。
It's true.
It's creating that bond through the language we're using.
对。
Mhmm.
I love it.
