英语学习者最大的错误是什么?

The biggest mistake English learners make?

Speaker 1

就是以为自己卡住了。

Assuming they're stuck.

Speaker 1

他们觉得自己已经到了极限,但其实大多数学习者根本没有达到极限。

They think they've reached their limit, but most learners haven't reached a limit at all.

Speaker 1

他们只是把精力放在了不适合当前水平的技能上。

They're simply focusing on the wrong skills for their current level.

Speaker 1

所以了解自己的水平很重要。

That's why understanding your level matters.

Speaker 1

嘿,Lindsay。

Hey, Lindsay.

Speaker 1

你今天怎么样?

How are you today?

Speaker 0

嘿,Aubrey。

Hey, Aubrey.

Speaker 0

挺好的。

Doing pretty good.

Speaker 0

你呢?

How are you?

Speaker 0

最近怎么样?

What's going on?

Speaker 1

我很好。

I'm great.

Speaker 1

我有个问题。

I have a question.

Speaker 1

如果让你猜的话,你觉得英语里有多少个短语包含“gun”这个词?

If you had to guess, how many phrases do you think in English contain the word gun?

Speaker 0

天哪。

Oh my god.

Speaker 0

太多了。

So many.

Speaker 0

我猜大概三十到四十个吧。

I would have to guess between thirty and forty.

Speaker 1

好。

Okay.

Speaker 1

你猜得很接近了。

You're very close.

Speaker 1

我查了一下,虽然没有一个确切的数字,但我们已经数过一些了。

Had to look it up, and there's not nothing nothing was like, this is the specific we have counted for sure.

Speaker 1

但能找到的最接近的答案是46个。

But closest guess we could found is could find is 46.

Speaker 1

46个习语和短语,确实不少。

46 idioms and phrases with So, the word yeah, that is a lot.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

当然,我们有像“抢先行动”、“处于压力之下”、“坚持己见”这些。

Of course, we've got jump the gun, under the gun, stick to your guns.

Speaker 1

我们日常对话里用得特别多。

There's so many that we use in everyday conversations.

Speaker 1

今天我们要教一个我们在工作中经常用到的,还有一些意思非常相近的说法。

And today we're going to teach one that we use a lot at work with some other phrases that have a very similar meaning.

Speaker 1

有意思的是,这些说法其实跟枪没什么关系,对吧?

And what's tricky is these aren't actually about guns, right?

Speaker 1

枪在美国文化里确实很常见。

Guns are very prevalent in American culture.

Speaker 1

我们语言里经常出现这个词,但用这些短语和表达的时候,我们想的并不是枪。

We have this word in our language a lot, but when we use these phrases and expressions, we're not thinking about guns.

Speaker 1

我们想的是另一个意思。

We're thinking about this other meaning.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

尤其是在商务场合,对吧?

Especially in a business context, right?

Speaker 0

我是说,我们当然不是真的在想枪,但了解这些习语很重要。

I mean, we're obviously not thinking about guns, but it's important to know these idioms.

Speaker 0

我是说,在商务场合,有时候说得随意一点很重要。

I mean, it's important in business to speak a little bit casually at times.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

这其实在最近一期节目里出现过,你当时说到,为了暗示客人该走了,你不得不越来越明显。

This actually came up in a recent episode where you were talking about how you had to escalate how obvious you were being with hints that you were ready for a guest to leave.

Speaker 1

然后Michelle说,哦,你这是把大招都使出来了。

And Michelle said, oh, you were pulling out the big guns.

Speaker 1

这个表达特别好,我们在工作中经常用。

That's such a great expression and we use it at work.

Speaker 1

所以请听到最后,我们会分享那一集,以及你可以在哪里找到这个系列的第二部分。

So stay to the end and we'll share that episode as well as where you can find part two of this series.

Speaker 1

这两个都在 All Ears English 上。

Both of those are over on All Ears English.

Speaker 1

所以你可以随意按任何顺序听这些内容。

So you can definitely listen to these out of order.

Speaker 1

今天我们会分享这些你可以在工作中使用的表达。

And today we'll share these that you can use at work.

Speaker 0

好的。

All right.

Speaker 0

非常好。

Really good.

Speaker 0

那我们开始讲第一个你可以在工作中使用的表达,也就是 Michelle 在播客里说的那个。

So we're gonna start with the first one that you could use at work, which is again what Michelle said on the podcast.

Speaker 0

Pull out the big guns 或者 bring out the big guns。

Pull out the big guns or bring out the big guns.

Speaker 1

对。

Yep.

Speaker 1

两种说法你都会听到。

You'll hear both.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

意思就是使用非常强大的方法、工具或策略来实现目标。

Which means to use very strong methods, tools, or strategies to achieve a goal.

Speaker 1

我们在工作中经常这样做。

We do this a lot at work.

Speaker 1

我们在工作中经常说这句话。

We say it a lot at work.

Speaker 1

是时候拿出杀手锏了,或者说该亮出王牌了。

Time to pull out the big guns or time to bring out the big guns.

Speaker 0

你会用不同的方法。

You're going to use different methods.

Speaker 0

也许会更努力一点,或者换个方式试试,用上你一直留着的那些招。

Maybe try harder in a way, try something in a different way, something that you've been reserving.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

比如说,他们在谈判时使出了杀手锏,才拿下了这笔交易。

So for example, they brought out the big guns during negotiations to secure the deal.

Speaker 1

这可能是一种策略。

So this could be a strategy.

Speaker 1

也可能是改变策略。

It could be changing the right.

Speaker 1

使出杀手锏的方式有很多种,或者他们可能会请一个特别擅长谈判的人来帮忙。

There's all kinds of things that could be pulling out the big guns, or they might have a person who's especially good at negotiating that they call in.

Speaker 1

他们会说,好吧,把王牌亮出来。

They say like, all right, bring out the big guns.

Speaker 1

叫杰西卡来。

Call Jessica.

Speaker 1

她特别擅长谈判,对吧?

She's especially good at negotiating, right?

Speaker 0

对,对,没错。

Yes, yes, exactly.

Speaker 0

或者我听说他们为全公司的健康计划提供现金奖励,这就是亮出王牌,对吧?

Or I heard they're offering a cash prize for the company wide health initiative, pulling out the big guns, right?

Speaker 0

那意味着现金,对吧?

That means cash, right?

Speaker 0

他们拿出的就是钱,因为大多数人喜欢现金,对吧?

Money is what they're pulling out because everyone, most people like cash, right?

Speaker 1

没错,对吧?

Exactly, right?

Speaker 1

如果他们只是说,哦,我们搞个健康活动,但因为有现金奖励,他们加大了力度,这是另一种说法。

If they're like, oh, we're doing a health initiative just because, but now that there's a cash prize, they're upping is the another way we say that.

Speaker 1

他们拿出大招来增加一些动力。

They're pulling out the big guns to give some more motivation.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

那“重炮”呢?

And what about heavy artillery?

Speaker 0

你听过这种说法吗,Aubrey?

Do you ever hear that, Aubrey?

Speaker 1

我在网上看到过。

I saw this online.

Speaker 1

我不太常用,但我听过。

I don't use this as much, but I have heard it.

Speaker 1

它的意思和“拿出重武器”一样,就是说我们要动用重炮了。

It means the same as bringing out the big guns to say we're gonna bring out the heavy artillery.

Speaker 1

比如说,面对诉讼时,公司拿出了重炮。

So for example, when facing a lawsuit, the company brought out the heavy artillery.

Speaker 1

他们聘请了一组法律专家。

They hired a team of legal experts.

Speaker 1

所以这个说法比较少见。

So this is more rare.

Speaker 1

你可能会听到。

You might hear it.

Speaker 1

如果你知道,你可以用,别人会明白你的意思,但更常见的说法还是“拿出重武器”。

If you know, you can use it, people will know what you mean, but it's definitely more common to say they bring, you know, to bring out the big guns.

Speaker 0

有意思。

Interesting.

Speaker 0

然后我们还有“全力以赴”这个表达。

And then we have the expression go all out.

Speaker 0

有意思。

Interesting.

Speaker 0

这个和那个有关联吗?

Is this one linked to Yeah.

Speaker 1

这些和我们要教的两个表达意思一样,都是指全力以赴或者拿出看家本领。

These have the same meanings as we're gonna teach two more that mean the same thing as pulling out the big guns or bringing out the big guns.

Speaker 1

因为你不想每次都这么说。

Because you don't wanna say that every time.

Speaker 1

如果你在聊天时谈到全力以赴、尽最大努力,你不会想一遍又一遍地重复同一个说法。

If you're having a conversation and you're talking about going all out, putting in maximum effort, that's not when you'd want to say over and over and over.

Speaker 1

所以我们给你提供几个其他选择。

So we're going to give you a couple of other options here.

Speaker 0

是的,我喜欢。

Yes, I love it.

Speaker 0

所以再说一遍,为了尽最大努力,我们这次产品发布要全力以赴,确保成功。

So again, yeah, to use the maximum effort, we're going all out on this product launch to make sure it succeeds.

Speaker 0

我们尽力了,对吧?

We're trying our best, right?

Speaker 1

或者团队在演示时全力以赴,给客户留下了深刻印象。

Or the team went all out to impress the client during the presentation.

Speaker 1

所以这意味着,是的,最大努力。

So this means, yeah, maximum effort.

Speaker 1

目标真的很重要。

It's the goal is really important.

Speaker 1

所以无论你需要做什么来提升一点,你都会全力以赴。

So whatever you need to do to up the game a little bit, you're gonna go all out.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

所以也许举个例子,他们带客户去四季酒店吃了一顿高档晚餐,或者点了菜单上最好的香槟。

So maybe for example, they took the client out to a fancy dinner at the Four Seasons or something, ordered the best champagne on the menu.

Speaker 0

这些可能是你为了打动客户而做的事情。

These would be things that you might do to impress a client.

Speaker 1

当然,我们在日常对话中也会用到这个表达。

And we use this, of course, in everyday conversations as well.

Speaker 1

比如我们要开派对、去高档餐厅,或者提高预算、投入更多精力的时候,就可以说,我们要全力以赴。

If we're throwing a party, if we're going to a fancy restaurant, if you are raising the budget or putting in more effort, just be like, we're going all out.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

我是说,全力以赴对不同的人来说可能意味着不同的东西。

I mean, going all out could mean different things to different people.

Speaker 0

我记得大学时认识一个人,她是个运动型女生,打篮球的。

I remember I knew someone in in college who was so she was kind of like a jock and a basketball player.

Speaker 0

她平时特别随意,从来不穿牛仔裤。

She was so casual that she never wore jeans.

Speaker 0

对她来说,穿牛仔裤就已经很正式了。

Like, jeans to her were really fancy.

Speaker 0

所以每次她穿牛仔裤的时候,大家就会说,哇,你这次真是全力以赴了,为了这个派对、这个活动。

So whenever when she would wear jeans, oh, you're going all out for this, you know, for this party, for this event.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

她就是这样,真的

That's how she was, like, really

Speaker 1

穿得很正式。

dressed up.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

没穿篮球短裤。

Not wearing basketball shorts.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

确实。

It's true.

Speaker 1

这要看情况。

It depends.

Speaker 1

每个人的标准都不一样。

What's the different levels for everybody.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

餐厅有多高档,或者你为派对花了多少心思。

How fancy the restaurant might be, how much effort you put into a party.

Speaker 1

我不是那种特别喜欢布置派对的人。

I'm not one to really like decorate for a party.

Speaker 1

所以如果我随便挂几个装饰,我就觉得,哇,我已经很用心了。

So if I throw up a few decorations, I'm like, oh, I went all out.

Speaker 1

但有些人,比如我邻居,真的会大张旗鼓,装饰品、气球、小点心、饮料台,样样齐全,我确实达不到那个水平。

Whereas others, have a neighbor who really goes all out like so many decorations and balloons and hors d'oeuvres and drink stations and yeah, I'm I'm not at that level.

Speaker 0

对,每个人都不一样,对吧?

Yeah, it's for everyone, right?

Speaker 0

我们每个人都在自己的位置上尽最大努力,然后全力以赴是另一个说法。

We're all in our own place doing our very best And then pull out all the stops would be another one.

Speaker 0

就是尽一切可能让事情成功。

So to do everything that's possible to make something succeed.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

让它成功。

Make it successful.

Speaker 0

那这具体会是什么样子呢?

So what would that that look would

Speaker 1

比如市场团队为这次活动全力以赴。

like the marketing team pulled out all the stops for the campaign.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

所以就像我们说的,这取决于个人和团队,情况会有所不同。

So this, just like we said, this is going to look different depending on the person, the team.

Speaker 1

每个人能付出的最大努力,看起来都是不一样的。

Each person, the maximum effort they can put in looks different from the maximum effort another person might put in.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

当你全力以赴的时候,那可能看起来会不一样,取决于——

When you pull out all the stops, that might look different depending on the

Speaker 0

公司或者队友。

company or the teammate.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

你有没有觉得说英语之后特别累?

Have you ever felt exhausted after speaking English?

Speaker 0

不是因为对话很难,而是因为你的大脑在超负荷运转,要翻译、检查语法、找词汇。

Not because the conversation was difficult, but because your brain was working overtime to translate, checking grammar, searching for vocabulary.

Speaker 0

但真正的流利其实感觉更轻松。

But true fluency actually feels lighter.

Speaker 0

你花在思考英语上的时间少了,更多时间用来和人交流。

You spend less time thinking about English and more time connecting with people.

Speaker 0

好的,Aubrey。

Okay, Aubrey.

Speaker 0

我们来做个角色扮演吧。

Let's break into a role play.

Speaker 0

假设我们是同事,正在开一个客户提案策略会议。

So here we're coworkers, and we're in a client pitch strategy meeting.

Speaker 0

会议。

Meeting.

Speaker 1

高风险。

High stakes.

Speaker 1

高

High

Speaker 0

风险。

stakes.

Speaker 0

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 0

这对我们来说是个大客户。

This is a huge client for us.

Speaker 0

如果我们拿下这个客户,可能会彻底改变我们在市场上的地位。

If we win this account, it could completely change our position in the market.

Speaker 1

我同意。

I agree.

Speaker 1

我觉得这次提案我们得全力以赴,拼尽全力。

I think we need to go all out go all out on this pitch.

Speaker 1

别用那些标准模板或者重复的幻灯片了。

Let's avoid any standard templates or recycled slides.

Speaker 1

所有内容都要专门为他们量身定制。

Everything should be tailored specifically to them.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

我们要不惜一切代价,定制演示、升级视觉效果,甚至可以做产品现场演示。

Let's pull out all the stops, custom demo, upgraded visuals, maybe even a live walkthrough of the product.

Speaker 1

对。

Yes.

Speaker 1

说实话,现在可能是时候拿出我们的王牌了。

And honestly, this might be the moment to bring out the big guns.

Speaker 1

我们可以请高级策略师和顶级用户体验设计师来加强提案。

We could bring in our senior strategist and our top UX designer to strengthen the proposal.

Speaker 0

我很喜欢这个想法。

I love it.

Speaker 0

这应该能清楚地传达出我们对这个客户非常重视。

That should send a clear message that we're serious about this account.

Speaker 1

不错。

Nice.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

这真是一次很棒的角色扮演。

This is a great role play.

Speaker 1

在工作中,当你谈到要加大投入的时候,这种情况经常发生。

This happens a lot at work when you are talking about upping the stakes like that.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

我们怎么做才能让客户真正感受到我们付出了最大的努力呢?

What can we do to really show a client that we are putting in maximum effort?

Speaker 0

太棒了。

Love it.

Speaker 0

那么奥布里,那集是什么内容?

So Aubrey, what was the episode?

Speaker 0

哦,其实,我们先别急着说,回顾一下我们在角色扮演里说了什么。

Oh, actually, let's go through what Don't we said in the role jump the gun here.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

首先,你知道,你说,嗯,我说这是个重要客户,对吧?

First, you know, you said well, I said this is a big client, Right?

Speaker 0

我们需要拿下这个客户。

We need to win this client.

Speaker 0

你说,我同意。

You said, I agree.

Speaker 0

我觉得这次提案我们得全力以赴。

I think we need to go all out on this pitch.

Speaker 0

所以你得想尽一切办法拿下这个客户。

So you need to do everything you possibly can to get the business.

Speaker 1

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

然后我在分享我们可能会怎么做。

And I'm sharing, like, what we maybe would do.

Speaker 1

可能以前有些演示,你用的是重复的幻灯片,只是换了品牌标识。

There might be previous presentations where you are using recycled slides and just changing the branding.

Speaker 1

如果你要全力以赴,你会更针对他们来定制内容。

If you're gonna go all out, you're trying to tailor it more to them.

Speaker 1

你会投入更多精力,不管具体是什么形式。

You're trying to put in more effort, whatever that might look like.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

然后我说,没错。

And then I said, exactly.

Speaker 0

我们要全力以赴。

Let's pull out all the stops.

Speaker 0

再说,这很相似。

Again, very similar.

Speaker 0

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 0

做好所有的小事、特别的事,定制演示、升级视觉效果。

Doing all the little things, the special things, custom demo, upgraded visuals.

Speaker 1

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 1

我很好奇这个习语从哪来的,“全力以赴”。

I'm curious where this idiom comes from, pull out all the stops.

Speaker 1

就像,我不知道。

It's like I don't know.

Speaker 1

想象一下,对。

Imagining Yeah.

Speaker 1

如果有什么塞子堵住洞或缝隙,把它们拔出来,就像水坝有塞子一样。

If you have stops would be sort of something that's plugging a hole or a gap and if you pull them out maybe like a dam has stops.

Speaker 1

如果你从水坝里拔出什么东西,水就能流出来了。

If you would pull something out of a dam and then the water could go.

Speaker 1

我很好奇。

I'm curious.

Speaker 1

我们得查查这个说法的来历。

We'd have to look up the the background of that one.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

确实得查。

We would have to.

Speaker 0

那你说的最后一个是什么?

Then what what did you say is the last one?

Speaker 1

我说,说实话,现在可能是拿出大招的时候了。

And I said, honestly, this might be the moment to bring out the big guns.

Speaker 1

我说的是那些高级策略师,一些顶尖人物,他们就是我们的王牌。

And I'm talking about some senior strategists, some top people that would be our big guns.

Speaker 1

他们不是每次电话会议都参加。

They're not on every call.

Speaker 1

他们也不是每次做演示文稿都在场,但也许这次我们得请他们出马。

They're not on every deck creation, but maybe we need to call them for this one.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

而且这个短语挺有意思的,'bring out the big guns'。

And it's interesting with this phrase, bring out the big guns.

Speaker 0

有时候它可以指资源,但有时候也可以指人。

Sometimes it can apply to, like, resources, but sometimes it can actually be people.

Speaker 0

因为你有没有听过'雇佣枪手'这个说法?

Because have you ever heard the expression a hired gun?

Speaker 0

你以前听过吗?

Have you heard that before?

Speaker 0

比如说,你请一个承包商,一个雇佣枪手,就是那种特别特别有才华的人。

Like, you bring in a contractor, a hired gun, like someone who's just like a really, really talented.

Speaker 0

他们就是在请一个雇佣枪手。

They're bringing in a hired gun

Speaker 1

就像你说的,在谈判的时候。

for Like this you said, the negotiation.

Speaker 1

所以我们是在请出大人物,对吧?

So we're bringing in the big guns, right?

Speaker 1

雇佣枪手就是那种专家,或者是你咨询的某个人。

A hired gun would be like that expert or maybe a someone you're consulting with someone.

Speaker 1

对吧?

Right?

Speaker 1

你请了某个人来。

You're bringing someone.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

但那个更具体是指一个人。

But that's more specifically about a person.

Speaker 0

我觉得“出动大人物”可能是指某个特别的人要来。

Bringing out the big guns, I think, could be a person is coming, a special person.

Speaker 0

或者也可能是,我们以特别的方式动用资源。

Or it could be, again we're using our resources in a special way.

Speaker 1

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 1

对。

Right.

Speaker 1

两种情况都有可能。

It could be either.

Speaker 1

有意思。

Interesting.

Speaker 1

不过,确实,这三种说法都能用非常不同且有趣的方式来表达你在全力以赴。

But yeah with all three of these you have three very different and interesting ways to share that you are just putting in maximum effort.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

而且我们总是想做到最好,对吧?

And we always want to do our best, right?

Speaker 0

那么,Aubrey,是哪一集启发了这一集呢?

So Aubrey, what was the episode that inspired this one?

Speaker 0

你觉得呢?

Would you say?

Speaker 1

好的。

Alright.

Speaker 1

是在All Ears English的第2601集。

So it was over on All Ears English episode 2,601.

Speaker 1

我很高兴我们做了这期关于巧妙结束聚会的节目。

I'm so glad we did this subtle ways to end a gathering.

Speaker 1

那是在那一集里,Michelle用了这个短语。

So that was where Michelle used this phrase.

Speaker 1

很自然,对吧?

Naturally, right?

Speaker 1

如果你错过了那一集,我们真的很想推荐你去听一下。

And we definitely wanna point you to that if you missed it.

Speaker 1

不过这个系列的第二部分会在All Ears English播客上播出,讲的是带“gun”这个词的习语。

But also part two of this series will be over on the All Ears English Podcast with idioms that have the word gun.

Speaker 1

我们在英语里用得特别多。

We use it so much in English.

Speaker 1

所以一定要关注All Ears English。

So be sure to follow All Ears English.

Speaker 1

如果你错过了第一集,去看看吧,这样就不会错过第二集了。

If you missed that first episode, go check it out and so that you don't miss part two.

Speaker 0

对,各位。

Yeah, guys.

Speaker 0

别错过了。

Don't miss it.

Speaker 0
