Today I'm starting a new series which I've titled the parables of Christ.

This is the first of 10 episodes when I record 10 episodes I would see if I would continue or move to a different topic altogether we all know Jesus was a great teacher who taught the message of God's kingdom using parables.

He taught about 40 parables and this made his teaching very memorable.

So what I'm going to do is I'm briefly going to talk about why jesus taught in parables and from there move to the subject matter for today which is the parable of the good samaritan I pray that as you come with me on this journey the understanding of God will come upon you because the bible says wisdom is a principal thing therefore get wisdom and in all your getting, get understanding.

Understanding is a necessity if you are to get wisdom because wisdom is the right application of knowledge so how can we work in wisdom if we do not have understanding of the knowledge that we've acquired heavenly father thank you for this opportunity once again I pray that Lord, as your word comes, let your word bring light and let it give understanding to the simple.

主啊，求你帮助我们按照你的旨意行事，活在你话语的智慧中。

Help us, oh God, to walk according to your will and to walk in the wisdom of your word.

In jesus name amen jesus's teaching style took people by surprise because it was very captivating and relatable he taught in short allegorical stories called parables in fact mark tells us that when jesus taught he didn't say anything to them without using parables that's mark four thirty four that's why people were amazed at his teaching because they've not really you know come across this kind of teaching before when they go to the synagogue in the temple the priest or the pharisees they'll just come read the Torah and then you know it was so abstract but when they got to meet Jesus the way Jesus taught was very very relatable because they could relate, they could relate to death because most of the parables relate to their everyday life and what have you so parables were very easy to understand they are very easy to understand a lot of you know spiritual discussions revolve around abstract concepts and ideas you know they revolve around things that the people can't really relate to because when you come and then you are always reading the Torah you know the laws of God and do this and don't do that and everything at some point the people can't relate to it, find it boring and know unmotivating so it doesn't really bring transformation to their lives and that's why they found Jesus's teaching very captivating because when he begins to speak and he begins to tell stories like that you know it gets your attention, it gets your attention.

When I was in primary school I always loved teachers who told stories like when they are teaching they would just pause and they start telling the stories it was very nice and most of the students love teachers who tell stories so stories are good they help you understand the subject matter at hand so by using parables Jesus was able to share religious truths that could immediately connect with his listeners when these truths corresponded with things from their daily lives like you know bread baking and traveling even sleeping you know party and what have you their everyday life parables should be related to all of them people become more engaged when they listen to a story you know like I was saying once you begin to tell stories nobody will sleep in your class I'm telling you if you are someone who tells a lot of stories while you teach and if their stories relate to what you are teaching it makes your class very interesting you know it makes your class very interesting so stories are good it shouldn't be always you know the theories, theories, theories you know some of the things have to be practical so you have to make use of illustrations and things like that so that it will make the thing very relatable what you are teaching very relatable and that's what Jesus did so Jesus's teachings were very memorable very very memorable so he engages the same areas you know of their lives if he's teaching and there's a particular subject matter that he wants to wants to target he would relate it to that part of their daily lives that will make it easy for them to understand and that's what we are going to look at today the good samaritan we are going to look at it and then you would understand clearly what I'm talking about and parables are very easy to remember you know I the parable of the good samaritan I think I knew that parable when I was very very young in Sunday school you know and these parables especially the good Samaritan the average Sunday school kid can narrate the story to you because that's how simple the story is you know so parables they are very easy to understand and that's why Jesus used them a lot they are very easy to remember you see it's not enough that Jesus's words would be easy to grasp they needed to be memorable as well so once you are teaching and you are able to relate your teachings to stories okay they are very very easy to remember a story gives the listener you know a hook to hold on to and an easy method to communicate the same lessons to others so if I'm going to tell you what I learnt in Sunday school last week and I know that my Sunday school madam or my Sunday school teacher told a story and I remember the story I can't be able to tell you everything I learned at Sunday school last week because of the story and it's it's it's really amazing it's really amazing So Jesus's style, you know, of the parable, the outline normally starts, you have the beginning and then you have the challenge.

He indicates the challenge or the problem and then the final part of his parables, he normally gives the resolution or the solutions so this allowed Christ listeners to remember and communicate these same truths to others easily so we are going to look at the parable of the good samaritan and then we are going to see how this parable relates to our lives in this contemporary world and the lessons that we can learn from it as well so I'm going to read the story of the good samaritan which is in Luke chapter 10 verse 25 to 37 and behold a certain lawyer stood up and tested him saying, teacher what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

耶稣对他说，律法上写的是什么？

He said unto him what is written in the law?

What is your reading of it?

那人回答说，你要尽心，尽性，尽力，尽意，爱主你的神。又要爱邻舍如同自己。耶稣说，你回答的是。你这样行，就必得永生。那人要显明自己有理，就对耶稣说，谁是我的邻舍呢？耶稣回答说，有一个人从耶路撒冷下耶利哥去，落在强盗手中，他们剥去他的衣裳，把他打个半死，就丢下他走了。偶然有一个祭司，从这条路下来。看见他就从那边过去了。

So he answered and said, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself and he said to me, you have answered rightly, do this and you will leave but he wanting to justify himself said to Jesus and who is my neighbor and Jesus answered and said a sitting man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves who stripped him of his clothing wounded him and departed leaving him half dead Now by chance a certain priest came down that road and when he saw him, he passed.

He passed by on the other side.

Likewise Elavites, when he arrived at the place, came and looked and passed by on the other side but a certain Samaritan as he journeyed came where he was and when he saw him he had compassion So when he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn and took care of him.

第二天临走时，他拿出两块钱给店主说：‘请你照顾他，额外花费等我回来必还你。’那么这三个人中，你认为谁是被强盗打伤之人的邻居呢？那人说：‘是怜悯他的。’耶稣说：‘你去照样行吧。’

On the next day when he departed, he took out 2 denarii, gave them to the innkeeper and said to him, take care of him and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay so which of these three do you think was labor to him who fell among the thieves and he said he who showed him who showed mercy on him then jesus said to him go and do likewise so this was a lawyer or an expert of the law who wanted to test jesus by asking him these silly questions you know teacher what shall I do to inherit eternal life he knew the answer to it but he still wanted to ask Jesus Jesus told him so what is written in the law and he said you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, your soul, your strength and your mind and your neighbor ask yourself and Jesus said yes so do that and then you will live but he wanted to justify himself because he was a Jew so he asked Jesus so who is my neighbor and then Jesus answered him by you know saying this parable to him and to all the people who were listening and at the end he said to among the three people who do you think is was labored to the one that was beaten and robbed and he said the one who showed him mercy Jesus told him to go and do likewise so let me just give you a little history about the feud between the jews and the samaritans the jews and the samaritans they hated each other so much they were like rivals you know they hated one another I'm telling you they really hated one another if jews are traveling and they have to pass through samaria they won't they would rather go and cross the Jordan go and cross the Jordan pass a long way to get to wherever they are going that's how much they hated each other and this is the origin of you know where the the hatred all started from you know the the nation of Israel when you read the book of kings first kings chapter two the nation of Israel was divided into two nations in the days of Rehoboam so Israel was composed of 10 tribes in the North and Judah was made up of Judah and Benjamin so Israel the Northern Kingdom was called Israel and then the Southern Kingdom was called Judah and benjamin the Southern Kingdom was the seat of the king you know where the king was that's the Southern Kingdom was made of only two tribes which is Judah and Benjamin the animosity between the Jews you know the Jews were majorly in the Southern Kingdom they were the inhabitants of Judah and Israelites began immediately after the division when the kingdom got divided this animosity started because Samaria was the capital of the Northern Kingdom so I'm in the South and the Southern Kingdom our capital is Judah and the Northern Kingdom their capital is Samaria so automatically they hated each other the samaritans and the jews hated each other once the division started so when Obam assembled an army to wage war against Israel he assembled over 400,000 men to wage war on Israel but God intervened through the prophet Shemaiah, God told the king hey you know what just leave them alone there's not going to be any war this time around so you know the king just forfeited the war just forfeited the war like that so immediately after the division, Jehovah changed the worship of the Israelites and that's what killed the Jews even more you know they no longer had to come travel all the way to Jerusalem to come and do their sacrifices and come and worship God and whatever they Jeroboam just built you know idols for them in Dan and Bethel we worship our own gods, you to stay in the South and worship your god and the animosity even grew more so later after Israel fell to the Assyrians they began to intermarried with the Assyrians and you know Jews they are not supposed to get married to you know other kingdoms other tribes other people who are different who are from a different race they are not supposed to be married it's in Deuteronomy seven thirty five this is why the jews hated the samaritans they call them dogs and half breeds you know they are marrying different people you know they marry people from different ways and the jews hated the samaritans even more and the samaritans also gave the jews their own problems you know when the jews were trying to rebuild their temple and stuff they posed a lot of problems to the jews and all that so eventually the religion of the samaritans evolved to the point that they held only the pentatore which is the torah the first five books as the law of God and they rejected all the other books you know the poetries the book of the kings prophecy books all those things they just forfeited it, he said we don't care about none of those we only use the first five books and they even argued that the Torah, they had the original copies the copies that the Jews were having were fake and everything so you can imagine the animosity was very very deep it was a very very deep animosity to the extent that when Jews and Samaritans meet there's always bound for bloodshed it was always a disaster you know it was always a disaster so this lawyer who was trying to you know see or bite into jesus's mind to know test him but he didn't know that by asking that question he was trapping himself when he asked that and who is my neighbor because the jews they believe that once I serve god, I do what I'm supposed to do, I do my normal sacrifices and whatever and then I take care of my neighbor I mean eternal life I've end eternal life that's what they believe and they believe that only jews are their neighbors they don't care about anybody else they believe that it's only jews that are their neighbors and that's why Jesus used this parable okay that's why Jesus used this parable and he said a priest came went to the other side and left the levites came went to the other side and left a priest would be likened to let's say in contemporary terms a priest would be let's say a pastor or let's say a bishop okay so a bishop came passed by leading help the poor dying man and then a Levite.

A Levite will be likened to let's say a minister in the house of the lord let's say a choirster or a musician or a church worker or whatever, a person can pass by any living room and the Samaritan, the Samaritan will be likened to an unbeliever okay someone who doesn't even believe in God comes sees the poor dying man and then helps the person, nurses the person back to hell, takes the person to an inn which is basically an hotel and pays the bills and tells the innkeeper that you know what I'm going whatever this person needs provide if it exceeds this two denied happening when I come back I'll top up for you so don't worry you know this is the compassion that jesus was trying to you know teach others that you shouldn't help people based on race or based on color or based on your relationship or status or whatever help people out of compassion that's it don't help me because I'm a krobo and you're also a krobo so we then take all of our own you know it shouldn't be like that okay as believers we are supposed to show compassion to whomever whether the person belongs to the body of Christ or not, we are supposed to help, we are supposed to help people okay and sometimes we expect help from people and then they disappoint us because expect wrong, our expectations are misplaced okay our expectations are misplaced because if I'm your classmate and I'm expecting help from my fellow classmates and they don't help me of course I'm going to be disappointed okay but it will shock you that someone from a different class altogether will be the one to help you and none of your classmates will help you you know it's like that you know these are some of the realities that we face okay so we shouldn't be like the priest or the levite or whatever they didn't even go to check if the man was alive or whatever they didn't even make an attempt you know and you know they believe that as a priest they are not supposed to go near dead bodies or blood you know it makes them unclean so some people understand why they had to move to the other side but that's far from what Jesus was trying to teach.

撒玛利亚人相当于现今的非信徒。这个比喻教导我们：行善不应分种族阶级，而要出于纯粹的怜悯。有时最意想不到的人反而会伸出援手，这正是现实的讽刺之处。

Jesus is teaching us about love and showing compassion and kindness to people it shouldn't be only those you know, it should be people that you don't even know, you should extend love to strangers, one way to win people for Christ is by showing your compassion to them okay showing your compassion to people who you don't even know and when they see this kind of love okay when they see this kind of love that's how come they are able to be convinced okay they are able to be convinced to join the body of Christ Jesus said when I was sick he didn't visit me when I was in prison he didn't visit me when I was tested, didn't give me water to drink and all that as believers we are supposed to show love and compassion to people of all kinds of races it shouldn't be showing love to only those in the church but we have to show love to unbelievers as well show love to people who are different from us it is very very important and this is the message that Jesus was trying to put across this is the message that Jesus was trying to put across and you could see that when Jesus asked him so amongst these three who acted as a neighbor to the dying man you could see that the lawyer was very disappointed he couldn't even see the Samaritan he said the one who showed mercy on him that's how disappointed he was because you know Jews will take care of Jews and they think that Jews are their only neighbors but Jesus is trying to tell us that we are not supposed to help people those in our circle only but if you have the means to help people outside your circle you have to do that, you have to help and you know all rewards come from God, God sees our good deeds and He rewards us so we know that there is more blessing in giving than receiving so if we are able to give a lot of love and compassion, God is also going to reward us greatly for the things that we do, for the things that we do, it will shock you that the people that you don't expect to help you will be the ones to help you and those that you expect to lend a hand will all boast you and this is a sad reality of life so we need to really step up and show kindness and compassion to people especially those we don't even know so what are some of the lessons that we can learn from this parable of the good samaritan we shouldn't count the risk or reward when doing good when doing good we shouldn't count the risk or the reward the priest and the Levites they both counted the risk and determined that it was too risky to help out and so they walked on by the Samaritan didn't it takes getting outside of you know our comfort zone to show mercy and compassion to others and sometimes there's risk involved but God causes to love and show compassion to others despite the risk.

耶稣教导的是普世的爱与怜悯——不仅要爱教内弟兄，更要主动关怀陌生人。用行动传递基督之爱，本身就是最好的传福音方式。当我们期待帮助却落空时，或许该反思：是否把期望放错了地方？

Showing compassion and love to people it really demands a lot sometimes you really have to get out of your comfort zone to help others okay but God demands it from us, it's a demand placed on us so it's a necessity that despite the risks and everything we are supposed to love others unconditionally so the samaritan risked his own safety just by stopping to help out because that road from Jerusalem to Jericho is known for you know ambush and robberies and all kinds of things it's a very dangerous path to travel on it's a very very dangerous path to travel on there are so many mienders and you know and it's it's on a slope you when you start from Jerusalem, the journey from Jerusalem you'll be about 1,200 feet above sea level but before you get to the end of that particular road you are about 2,200 feet below sea level.

行善不该计较风险回报。祭司和利未人权衡风险后选择离开，而撒玛利亚人明知耶利哥盗匪横行仍冒险相助。真正的怜悯常需要我们跨出舒适圈——那條海拔骤降1200英尺的险路上，每个弯道都可能藏着强盗。

So imagine you can see that it's a very steep road and it has a lot of menders so there are so many spots where robbers can hide and then ambush you and stuff so the samaritan even stopping to help is a risk on its own he didn't know if the robbers were hiding just waiting to attack him too but he did it anyway okay so he risked his safety by stopping and taking the beaten man along with him you know that road, that particular road they have a name for it called the Bloody Pass because there are always incidents of robberies, deaths and all kinds of things on that road so they named that road the Bloody Pass that's how bad it is okay he even risked his reputation as well because I mean what would people think as he carried a wounded man with blood and everything into town what people think like hey this man is even a jew and you are a samaritan you are carrying him on your dogs like what's going on he's risking his reputation put his reputation on the line just to help somebody something that is really scarce these days no on the other hand we shouldn't count the reward when we do good for others as well Reward shouldn't be the reason we do what we do.

怜悯之心才是我们行事的根本动机。

Compassion should be our major goal.

要知道，是的，爱他人是我们若想获得永生必须做的事情之一。

Know, yes, loving others is one of the things we must do if we want eternal life.

但如果你在施予怜悯时只考虑回报，那你就是在试图赚取它。帮助他人时不要别有用心，耶稣的爱才应是你向邻舍展现怜悯与爱的动力。我们帮助人时不该心怀不轨，总要存着清洁的心和正直的灵。要相信鉴察万物的神必会因我们所行的善事奖赏我们。好撒玛利亚人甘愿牺牲——展现怜悯往往需要牺牲，爱神与爱邻舍有时都需付上代价，这位好撒玛利亚人就愿意作出牺牲。

But if you only consider the reward when showing mercy you are trying to earn it okay don't have ulterior motives when you are helping other people the love of Jesus should be what draws you to show mercy and love to your neighbors okay so we shouldn't show we shouldn't have ulterior motives when helping people okay we should always help people with a clean mind and a clean heart okay and we should believe that God is who sees all things okay is going to reward us for the good things that we are doing the good things that we do the good samaritan was willing to sacrifice okay, mercy requires sacrifice to show mercy, we have to sacrifice sometimes both loving God with all our heart and loving our neighbors as well comes with sacrifice, a good samaritan was willing to make a sacrifice.

You have to remember that the samaritan was traveling somewhere too, yeah he likely had somewhere he needed to be as well but he stopped anyway he had his own business to attend to but he arranged, he rearranged his you know priorities to help out the injured man on the side of the road perhaps he missed an important business meeting we never know because he was also going somewhere too maybe he would he had already been away from his family for days and taking the time to show compassion cost him a few more you know he has been away from his family he's been away from his loving wife and everything his children are waiting for him but he still stopped to help a dying man so we must always be willing to sacrifice if we are to show mercy he made sure that everything was paid for he used his own money you know he used his own money to pay for for the hotel bills and everything the food that the man is eating everything so in order to show mercy we must be willing and ready to sacrifice okay sometimes loving others requires us to sacrifice our time and our money and we and we also have to be willing to sacrifice ourselves okay we have to sometimes be willing to sacrifice ourselves something you know a living sacrifice just like Jesus did for us Sometimes we must be willing to go the extra mile for people you know we just have to make that sacrifice and believe that God is going to reward us okay we shouldn't get too busy to show mercy and compassion okay we live in such a busy society today you know we are all busy doing something you know you go to work, you go to school some people go to work and school at the same time you know it's a whole mess you know we live in a very very busy society and it's so easy to get too busy to show mercy and compassion to others perhaps you donate food to your local food bank to help the poor but when was the last time you took time out of your busy schedule to help someone in need?

Okay the priest and the levites were both busy people in fact part of their job probably included distributing resources to needy people.

Yes, they were too busy to help someone in serious need like at the point of death, at the point of death they couldn't help the person but you know it's part of their job description to help the needy and the poor okay so sometimes we have to ask ourselves you know would we also have stopped to help the man have dead along the road if we were in the shoes of the levites and the priests or we say we have our own you know wahala we have our whole wahala on our head so we need to you know focus and do our own thing it's not your problem it's not my it's not my business it's not it's none of my business you know someone else should take care of it we shouldn't be too busy we shouldn't be too busy okay shouldn't be too busy we should always be willing to show compassion and mercy and finally the good samaritan didn't let prejudice get in the way okay remember Jews and samaritans didn't get along like I explained earlier, they really really hated each other like that beef was a serious serious beef, There was a lot of prejudice on both sides however the good samuraikan didn't allow prejudice to get in the way of helping out the man he found injured on the side of the road.

那一刻，他摒弃了一切狭隘、琐碎和敌对情绪去救助同胞，这个重要教训值得我们铭记。首先我们都是人类，其次才分属不同族群。撒玛利亚人的行为启示我们：必须超越差异展现慈悲。你永远不知道帮助会来自何方——今天你视为敌人的人，明天可能成为你的贵人。不论来自哪个部落，我们同是地球上的凡人，必须放下偏见、种族歧视和所有隔阂，用发自内心的爱互相扶持，鉴察一切的上帝必会报偿。

At that moment he put aside any shallowness, any pettiness, any rivalry you know to care for his fellow human being and that's an important lesson we need to remember today okay they're all human beings first okay they're all human beings first before tribe and all kinds of things comes in so the samaritan did what the samaritan did we need to rise above them and show compassion for our fellow imambeys no matter our differences we need to look at what the samaritan did okay we need sometimes we need to rise above our differences because you never know where your help will come from you think somebody is your enemy today that person might be the one to take you to your next level tomorrow you never know so we need to always put prejudice aside it doesn't matter the tribe you come from it doesn't matter the tribe I come from we are all human beings on this earth we are all human beings on this earth okay so we need to put prejudice aside we need to put racial discrimination, racial bias, all those things aside and help one another out of love, out of the love of our hearts, it is very very very important and God who sees everything will reward us because he's a rewarder of all men, he's a rewarder of all men.

I hope today's episode is really educating you and you've learned something I personally have learned a lot from this parable you know as I was studying and doing my research and everything I was really learning a lot of new things you know sometimes you think you know but it's never enough you know you always have to keep learning so it's good it's good that you know I've been able to steady myself and you know come to record and whilst even recording I'm also learning new things so I hope you also learned something so I pray that God will give us all understanding heavenly father we pray for wisdom, pray for knowledge and we pray for understanding heavenly father let the entrance of your word bring light oh God and let it bring understanding heavenly father take away all kinds of ignorance help us to show compassion help us to show compassion to others, not only those in our family, not only those in our friendship circles but even strangers as well, Lord thank you, keep directing our path, enabling father give us the strength to keep learning and improving ourselves every day, thank you oh lord, thank you for all that you keep doing for us, heavenly father I pray that you shall put us in good health as the month progresses, father lord I pray for whoever is listening that God you give them strength to keep studying your word, you give them strength and grace to keep walking in righteousness, thank you for this opportunity to walk this earth thank you for this opportunity to breathe in the oxygen that you provide for us each and every day free of charge heavenly father what can we say but thank you glory and honor be unto your holy name we pray that as we've studied this parable of the good samaritan let this seed fall on fertile grounds that it will grow and bear fruits in 100,000 folds.
