In many parts of the world, summer is a time of color.

Speaker 0

And by that, I mean flowers.

Speaker 0

Sunflowers, poppies, gladiolas, dahlias.

Speaker 0

Flowers bring joy into the world.

Speaker 0

And so today, we have a story about one flower worth celebrating.

When we're having a bad day, it can be helpful if we talk about it, if we sit down with someone we trust and share how we're feeling.

Speaker 2

We're about to meet a character who isn't just having a bad day.

Speaker 2

He's having a bad summer.

Speaker 2

And when he talks about it with a complete stranger, things go from tragic to magic.

Speaker 2

I'm Rebecca Scheer, and welcome to Circle Round, where story time happens all the time.

Speaker 2

Today, our story is called Crocus Pocus.

Speaker 2

You'll find versions of this tale from the southern Italian island of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

Speaker 2

Some really great people came together to bring you our version of this folktale, including Jacob Laval and Amanda Warren.

Speaker 2

Jacob Laval has appeared in such TV shows and movies as Sesame Street, John Mulaney and The Sack Lunch Bunch, The Plot Against America and Eight Bit Christmas.

Speaker 2

His newest film, The Unbreakable Boy, is in theaters now.

Speaker 2

Amanda Warren is known for her roles in East New York, Dickinson, The Leftovers, The Burial, and The Night Agent, now in its second season on Netflix.

Speaker 2

So circle around everyone for Crocus Pocus.

Speaker 2

Have you ever seen the little cup shaped flower known as the crocus?

Speaker 2

Most crocuses originally come from Asia and North Africa, Africa.

Speaker 2

But there's one type of crocus, the pale purple long flowered crocus, that comes from Europe.

Speaker 2

More specifically, from the Italian island of Sicily.

Speaker 2

And according to legend, it was all thanks to a young grape grower named Nikola.

Speaker 3

Time to wake up and get to work in the vineyard.

Speaker 2

The vineyard had been in Nikola's family for generations.

Speaker 2

He recently inherited it from his parents, a pair of hard working grape growers who taught Nicola everything they knew before they passed away.

Speaker 2

Now that they were gone, the vineyard was Nicola's responsibility.

Speaker 2

And though he was still rather young, he was determined to keep the family business thriving.

Speaker 2

So day after day, he woke up early, went to bed late, and spent every hour in between tending the vineyard.

Speaker 2

But then in the middle of summer, everything went wrong.

Speaker 2

First, heavy clouds rolled in and stretched across the sky like a thick gray blanket.

Speaker 3

Good grief.

Speaker 3

The grapes need six hours of sun a day to ripen properly.

Speaker 3

These cloudy skies won't do it all.

Speaker 2

But the cloudy skies just got cloudier, growing thicker and grayer before unleashing a nonstop torrent of rain.

Speaker 3

Good gracious.

Speaker 3

If the grapes get too much water, they'll swell, then split, then rot.

Speaker 3

This rain is definitely not helping things.

Speaker 2

The rain eventually subsided, but Nicola's troubles didn't because then the vineyard was infested by caterpillars.

Speaker 3

Good golly.

Speaker 3

Those pesky parasites are nibbling up the vines and fruits.

Speaker 3

Come harvest time, I'll hardly have a harvest at all.

Speaker 2

As it turns out, Nicola was right.

Speaker 2

Come autumn, when it was time to pick the grapes, there were barely any grapes to pick.

Speaker 3

Good gravy.

Speaker 3

I've been walking up these rows of vines for hours.

Speaker 3

And while I've managed to pick some sweet purple grapes, the whole crop barely fills one basket.

Speaker 2

Still, Nikola was on his own now.

Speaker 2

And just like his parents before him, he knew he must make a living.

Speaker 3

Or do my best to make a living.

Speaker 3

I'll take this basket of grapes to the marketplace and see what I can sell.

Speaker 2

The marketplace was buzzing with shoppers shopping and vendors vending when Nicolas arrived.

Speaker 2

Weaving his way through the crowd, he passed the olive grower whose kiosk was bursting with plump, shiny olives.

Speaker 2

He saw the nut seller whose stall was filled with glossy brown almonds and chestnuts.

Speaker 2

The orchardist had plenty of apples.

Speaker 2

The beekeeper had plenty of honey.

Speaker 2

Every vendor seemed to have had a bountiful harvest.

Speaker 3

Except for me.

Speaker 3

Still, I've got to sell this basket of grapes.

Speaker 3

Otherwise, it'll be a long, hungry winter.

Speaker 2

Nicolas held up his basket and did his best to drum up business.

Speaker 3

Grapes for sale.

Speaker 3

Plump ripe grapes for sale.

Speaker 3

Their number may be small, but their flavor is mighty.

Speaker 2

Unfortunately, the shoppers paid him no mind.

Speaker 2

They just bustled past, their arms loaded with boxes and bags of other vendors' wares.

Speaker 3

Good grief.

Speaker 3

Nobody wants to buy my grapes.

Speaker 3

I wanted to make my parents proud, but even though I love the family vineyard, maybe I'm too young to grow grapes on my own.

Speaker 3

Maybe I should just throw in the towel and quit.

Speaker 2

Nikola hung his head and turned to leave.

Speaker 2

But just then

Speaker 3

Oh, I'm so sorry.

Speaker 2

Nikola looked up and realized he had bumped into an old woman.

Speaker 4

That's all right, young man.

Speaker 4

No need to apologize.

Speaker 4

You seem like you're distracted, like your head is in the clouds.

Speaker 2

The woman's long hair was white as sugar, and her weathered face was crisscrossed with wrinkles.

Speaker 2

Her hunched back was curved like a question mark, and her ragged dress was patched and torn.

Speaker 3

Actually, my head is in the clouds, but they're not the pretty white puffy clouds.

Speaker 3

They're the heavy gray stormy ones.

Speaker 4

Oh, tell me more.

Speaker 3

Well, after I lost my parents this year, I inherited their vineyard, and the summer was brutal on the harvest.

Speaker 3

I worked my tail off, but all I have to show for it is this measly basket of grapes.

Speaker 4

I'm awfully sorry to hear that, young man, and I'm awfully sorry about your parents.

Speaker 4

I don't wish to add to your troubles, but I've fallen on hard times, and I haven't a penny to feed myself.

Speaker 4

I've been wandering around this marketplace asking for help, but everyone has either ignored me or turned me away.

Speaker 4

So I wonder, might you spare some of your grapes?

Speaker 2

Nicolas looked down at his basket.

Speaker 2

With so few grapes to sell, he couldn't afford to give any away.

Speaker 2

But when he looked up at the old woman, he felt his heart soften.

Speaker 3

You're more than welcome to eat some of my grapes, madam.

Speaker 3

As many as you'd like.

Speaker 4

Are you certain?

Speaker 4

Don't you need to sell these grapes so you can make a living?

Speaker 2

Nicolas shrugged.

Speaker 3

I guess I'd rather make someone else's day by helping them in their time of need.

Speaker 3

So please help yourself.

Speaker 2

The woman's face crinkled into a grin.

Speaker 2

She reached a weathered hand into the basket, plucked out a bunch of purple grapes, and began to eat.

Speaker 2

Oh, so tasty.

Speaker 2

Nicola watched the woman devour the grapes, and with every piece of fruit she ate, something began to happen.

Speaker 2

Something so surprising, so unexpected, and so utterly impossible that Nikola could hardly believe his eyes.

Speaker 2

What do you think happened as the old woman ate the grapes?

Speaker 2

We'll find out after a quick break.

Speaker 1

One hundred years from now in a land far, far away.

Speaker 1

Hang on.

Speaker 1

It's not so far away at all, actually.

Speaker 2

Welcome back to Circle Round.

Speaker 2

我是Rebecca Scheer。

I'm Rebecca Scheer.

Speaker 2

Today, our story is called Crocus Pocus.

Speaker 2

Before the break, a young grape grower named Nikola inherited his parents' vineyard.

Speaker 2

During his first season in charge, everything went wrong.

Speaker 2

And come harvest time, all he had to sell at the marketplace was one basket of grapes, which he generously offered to a poor old woman.

Speaker 2

And as she devoured the fruit, do you know what happened?

Speaker 2

Her long white hair grew dark, her curved back grew straight, and the patches and tears in her dress disappeared.

Speaker 2

Before Nicola knew it, standing tall and radiant before him was a young woman.

Speaker 2

Her hair as black as midnight, her beautiful gown dripping with lace.

Speaker 2

Nicola,

Speaker 4

by giving your very last grapes to a soul in need, you've proven that you are a truly compassionate and generous young man.

Speaker 2

Nicola fought to find his voice.

Speaker 3

I I was just doing the right thing, ma'am.

Speaker 3

It's what my parents would have done.

Speaker 3

But wait, how did you know my name?

Speaker 4

That matters not, Nikola.

Speaker 4

But now that you've done something for me, I wish to do something for you.

Speaker 2

The woman motioned toward the basket of grapes.

Speaker 2

Somehow, it was every bit as full as it was before, as if no fruit had been eaten.

Speaker 4

Go back to your vineyard, Nicola.

Speaker 4

Then take the grapes in this basket and plant them in the ground.

Speaker 4

After that, enjoy your reward.

Speaker 2

With that, there was a flash of light, and the woman was gone.

Speaker 3

Great heavens.

Speaker 3

That was wild.

Speaker 2

Nikola glanced around the marketplace.

Speaker 2

He assumed a crowd would come scurrying over, peppering him with questions about the miraculous event that just took place.

Speaker 2

But everyone continued about their business as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred.

Speaker 3

好的。

Okay.

Speaker 3

So the woman said I should take my grapes and plant them.

Speaker 3

But let's get real.

Speaker 3

One of the first things my parents taught me is that you can't grow a grapevine from a whole grape.

Speaker 3

You snip a cutting from an existing vine, and then you plant that.

Speaker 3

Planting a grape and expecting results is preposterous.

Speaker 3

But then so is meeting an old woman who magically transforms into a young woman before vanishing into thin air.

Speaker 2

Nicolas took his basket and returned to his vineyard.

Speaker 2

Then very carefully, he planted each purple grape in the ground.

Speaker 2

The next morning, when he woke up and came outside, his jaw dropped so low, he nearly tripped over it.

Speaker 3

Goodness gracious.

Speaker 3

For every purple grape I planted yesterday, there now grows a purple flower.

Speaker 3

It was true.

Speaker 2

Sprouting up all over the fields was the little cup shaped flower known as the crocus.

Speaker 2

Nicola knelt down to get a closer view.

Speaker 3

Look at that.

Speaker 3

The stigma of each flower, the sticky part in the middle that collects pollen, is bright red, and it smells so sweet.

Speaker 2

He dipped his nose inside a flower and took a whiff.

Speaker 2

The stigma brushed against his lips, and suddenly his mouth was bursting with a remarkable flavor.

Speaker 3

It tastes sweet, like honey, and fresh like flowers of newly mown hay.

Speaker 3

I'll bet that if I picked a whole bunch of stigmas and let them dry, I could sell a pretty amazing spice.

Speaker 2

Nicola got to work picking crocuses and drying their stigmas.

Speaker 2

After a few days, he returned to the marketplace.

Speaker 2

Once again, he passed the olive grower, the nut seller, the orchardist, and beekeeper.

Speaker 2

Only this time, he was bearing more than a basket of grapes.

Speaker 2

He was carrying dozens of tiny bottles, each one filled with his brand new spice.

Speaker 3

Spice for sale.

Speaker 3

Exotic spice for sale.

Speaker 3

Sweeter and fresher than anything you've ever tasted.

Speaker 2

Within moments, Niccolo was surrounded by a gaggle of curious customers.

Speaker 2

Just one sniff of the spice, and all of them reached into their purses and wallets and began showering Nikola with coins.

Speaker 3

Thank you for your purchase, sir.

Speaker 3

Pleasure doing business with you, ma'am.

Speaker 3

Hope you enjoy the spice, miss.

Speaker 2

By day's end, Nicolas was out of bottles and flush with coins.

Speaker 2

Because as it turns out, the crocuses he had grown were long flowered crocuses, the species that produces saffron, a highly prized spice that's become famous for its use in foods, drinks, medicines, and dyes.

Speaker 2

But saffron isn't just legendary for its uses.

Speaker 2

It's legendary for its price.

Speaker 2

Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world.

Speaker 2

So as you can imagine, our young Nikola suddenly found himself set for life.

Speaker 2

Still, he continued working hard, growing his purple crocuses and purple grapes, and he never knew want again.

Speaker 2

Which just goes to show you, amazing things can happen when you let compassion, kindness, and generosity take root inside your heart and bloom.

Speaker 2

Now it's your turn.

Speaker 2

What are some small ways you can show kindness to others?

Speaker 2

Brainstorm a short or long list, then find some paper and draw a picture of a flower garden.

Speaker 2

Inside each flower, write the words I can, followed by an act of kindness from your list.

Speaker 2

Show your kindness garden to someone you have fun with.

Speaker 2

And if you'd like, show it to us.

Speaker 2
