I'm here with you all summer bringing you Circle Round's best stories about our big, beautiful shared outside.

Speaker 0

Today's episode is called the Salmon Famine.

Speaker 0

It's a story about what happens when we are feeling a little selfish and refuse to share with others.

Speaker 0

Spoiler alert, it does not go well.

Speaker 0

Let's circle around the campfire and take a listen.

Speaker 2

Think about a time you shared with someone.

Speaker 2

Speaker 2

Maybe you shared some time.

Speaker 2

Sharing with others can make everyone feel good.

Speaker 2

But in today's story, we'll meet three giants who refuse to share until a clever coyote does his share to teach them a giant lesson.

So circle round everyone for the Salmon Famine.

Speaker 2

Long, long ago, when the world was ruled by animals, the craftiest and cleverest of all creatures was Coyote.

Speaker 2

The wild and wily dog was always playing tricks.

Speaker 2

Sometimes he used his cunning to get something he wanted.

Speaker 2

Sometimes he used it to teach a lesson.

Speaker 2

This story is about a time he did both.

Speaker 2

Coyote made his home along a wide, winding river.

Speaker 2

And like the other animals who lived by the riverside, each year Coyote eagerly awaited the running of the salmon.

Speaker 2

The running of the salmon happened every summer when the big sleek fish known as salmon left the saltwater of the ocean and swam upstream to the freshwater of the river where they had first been born.

Speaker 3

And what a feast those salmon make.

Speaker 3

The minute we animals spot those plump delicious fish muscling against the current, we reach into the river, snatch them out of the water, and enjoy a mouthwatering meal.

Speaker 3

不过,

However,

Speaker 2

this particular summer, something unexpected happened.

Speaker 2

Didn't show up.

Speaker 2

And though Coyote and the other animals waited

Speaker 3

Here fishy fishies.

Speaker 2

And waited.

Speaker 3

Nice fishy fishies.

Speaker 2

The salmon never appeared.

Speaker 3

What is going on?

Speaker 3

The salmon should have started running by now.

Speaker 3

If the salmon don't come, a long hungry famine will.

Speaker 3

I must get to the bottom of this mystery.

Speaker 2

Coyote bolted toward the water and dove in.

Speaker 2

Whee.

Speaker 2

He floated downstream for hours, keeping his eyes peeled for salmon.

Speaker 2

At last, as he drifted past a thick tangled forest, what should he spy in the river stretching all the way from one side to the other but

Speaker 3

A dam.

Speaker 3

A big wall of logs and stones.

Speaker 3

The dam is catching the salmon as they swim upstream.

Speaker 3

And look, it's trapping them so they can't move.

Speaker 3

Who would do such a thing?

Speaker 3

Who would build a giant dam and hoard the fish for themselves?

Speaker 2

The moment Coyote asked that question, he heard the sound of thundering footsteps followed by the sound of thundering voices.

Speaker 2

Coyote leaped from the river and sprang behind a bush just as three giants, sisters actually, burst out of the forest.

Speaker 2

One was especially tall.

Speaker 2

It's time to eat, sisters.

Speaker 2

One was especially wide.

Speaker 4

Look at all these yummy salmon we've caught.

Speaker 2

And one was especially hairy.

Speaker 5

They're going to be absolutely delish.

Speaker 2

All three giants were carrying big wooden clubs.

Speaker 2

And before Coyote's very wide eyes, each of the sisters seized a flip flopping fish by the gills.

Speaker 2

过来。

Come here.

Speaker 2

Hold it from the water.

Speaker 2

Oh, you're gonna get

Speaker 6

away from me.

Speaker 2

Then stunned it with a club blow to the head.

Speaker 2

Mom.

Speaker 4

You gotta do it.

Speaker 2

With their dazed dinners and their jumbo hands, the sisters lumbered back into the forest.

Speaker 2

Coyote waited till they were out of sight before emerging from his hiding place.

Speaker 3

I can't believe it.

Speaker 3

Those giant sisters are hogging all the salmon by trapping them in their dam.

Speaker 3

I must find a way to free those fish by using my cunning, my wiles, and my magic.

Speaker 2

Something we didn't mention before about Coyote, he was a shape shifter.

Speaker 2

He could magically transform into any creature he wanted.

Speaker 2

And as he plotted a way to free the salmon from the giant sisters, he suddenly got an idea.

Speaker 2

He twitched his ears, wiggled his nose, and in no time flat

Speaker 6

他

He

Speaker 2

transformed into a baby.

Speaker 2

A baby giant as it happens.

Speaker 2

Sort of a mini version of the three sisters only nowhere near as tall, wide or hairy.

Speaker 2

In fact, he was downright adorable.

Speaker 2

He plopped down on his little behind, then he opened his cute little mouth and let out a big whopping cry.

Speaker 2

Within moments, who should come trundling from the forest?

Speaker 2

Their surfboard sized arms waving an alarm, but the three giant sisters.

Speaker 2

Is that a baby?

Speaker 4

Why is he all alone by the river?

Speaker 5

I don't know, but I do know this.

Speaker 5

He's totally adorable.

Speaker 4

Aw, little

Speaker 2

。

baby.

Speaker 2

Delighted that the sisters were falling for his trick, Coyote smiled his cutest smile and cooed his sweetest

Speaker 0

声音。

coo.

Speaker 0

Coo.

Speaker 2

I say we take him home and raise him.

Speaker 4

Once he gets big enough, he can help us collect salmon.

Speaker 5

Or he can collect it for us and cook it too.

Speaker 5

Maybe he'll even tidy up our house.

Speaker 5

We'll never have to lift a finger again.

Speaker 2

The sisters scooped up their future servant and carried him to their deep dark cave in the forest.

Speaker 2

After Coyote's long trip down the river, he was faint with exhaustion and hunger.

Speaker 2

So when the sisters offered him a bite of fresh cooked salmon, he eagerly gulped it down.

Speaker 2

Then he snuggled up beneath a blanket and dropped off to sleep.

Speaker 2

The next morning, he was awoken by his siblings booming voices.

Speaker 2

Get up, little one.

Speaker 4

The three of us are going out to gather roots vegetables to make a scrumptious salmon stew.

Speaker 5

Don't even think about leaving while we're gone.

Speaker 2

We wouldn't want to lose our future fishermen.

Speaker 2

And cook.

Speaker 4

And housekeeper.

Speaker 4

Good plan.

Speaker 2

The sisters three grabbed their baskets and fishing clubs, then shambled away.

Speaker 2

Once they were gone, Coyote slipped out from the blanket, twitched his ears, wiggled his nose, and transformed into

Speaker 3

That's more like it.

Speaker 3

Himself.

Speaker 3

Those three sisters are really a handful.

Speaker 3

Not only are they taking all the salmon, they're raising me to be their servant.

Speaker 3

Little do they know, but I'm am about to serve them a lesson.

Speaker 3

One they will never forget.

Speaker 2

What do you think Coyote is plotting?

Speaker 2

What would you do if you were the Wily Trickster?

Speaker 2

We'll find out what happens after a quick break.

Speaker 1

One hundred years from now in a land far, far away.

Speaker 1

等等。

Hang on.

Speaker 1

It's not so far away at all, actually.

I'm Rebecca Scheer.

Speaker 2

Welcome back to Circle Round Live at Symphony Hall in Boston, Massachusetts.

Speaker 2

Today, our story is called The Salmon Famine.

Speaker 2

Before the break, Clever Coyote discovered that three giant sisters had built a dam across the river so they could keep all the salmon for themselves.

Speaker 2

Coyote used his magic to shape shift into a baby.

Speaker 2

The sisters found him so irresistible and so promising as a future fisherman, cook, and all around servant that they brought him to their cave in the woods.

Speaker 2

The next morning, after the giants left to pick roots and vegetables and gather more fish, Coyote cooked up a plan.

Speaker 2

He transformed back into himself, then headed straight for the dam.

Speaker 3

My goodness.

Speaker 3

There must be thousands of pink and silver salmon trapped in this dam, desperate to get past.

Speaker 3

These salmon need to swim upstream, and the animals need these salmon.

Speaker 3

So I'm going to fix this problem by breaking it apart.

Speaker 2

Coyote wrenched a log from the dam.

Speaker 2

Then he tore out a stone.

Speaker 2

Then another log.

Speaker 2

Then another stone.

Speaker 2

The dam was so large that even after hours of work, Coyote could hardly see a difference.

Speaker 3

Boy, oh boy.

Speaker 3

This job is bigger than I thought, but I should call it a day.

Speaker 3

The sisters will be here any minute to collect fish for their stew.

Speaker 3

If they discover my secret, I'll be up the river without a paddle.

Speaker 2

Coyote chucked to his heels and scampered to the cave.

Speaker 2

Then he twitched his ears, wiggled his nose, and transformed into a baby.

Speaker 2

Goo.

Speaker 2

He had just crawled beneath the blanket when the sisters returned with their vegetables, roots, and fish.

Speaker 2

It's time to cook up some stew.

Speaker 4

Let's make sure our new baby brother has plenty to eat.

Speaker 5

Yeah, he's gonna be big and strong if he's gonna do all the work around this place.

Speaker 2

Everyone ate very well that night.

Speaker 2

And the following morning, the sisters had a hankering for salmon with huckleberry sauce.

Speaker 2

Once they left the cave with their berry baskets and fishing clubs, Coyote twitched his ears, wiggled his nose, and transformed into Roar.

Speaker 2

A wolverine.

Speaker 3

I'm pretty strong as a coyote, but I need to be even stronger if I'm gonna tear this dam apart.

Speaker 3

Hopefully, this getup will do the trick.

Speaker 2

Coyote bounded to the dam and got down to business.

Speaker 2

His new brawny body made him much more efficient.

Speaker 2

But by the time he had to head back to the cave, he still hadn't broken the dam.

Speaker 2

So the next morning, after the giants left to gather food, Coyote shape shifted into A wolf!

Speaker 2

The next day, he became a moose.

Speaker 2

And the next day, a bear roar.

Speaker 2

He kept this routine up for a week.

Speaker 2

He shape shifted into bigger and bigger animals.

Speaker 2

He worked on the dam for a few hours.

Speaker 2

Then he hurried to the lair and became a baby again.

Speaker 2

Coyote was busting his tail to bust the dam apart.

Speaker 2

The progress was slower than he would have liked.

Speaker 3

Okay, that settles it.

Speaker 3

I need a new plan.

Speaker 3

And if it means being discovered by those salmon stealing sisters, then so be it.

Speaker 2

The following morning, after the Giants bid their baby brother farewell and headed to the woods with their baskets and clubs, Coyote transformed back into himself.

Speaker 3

That always feels good.

Speaker 2

And jumped into action.

Speaker 2

Each of the sisters had a sturdy wooden spoon that they used for snarfing down soup and stew.

Speaker 2

Of course, the giants were so gargantuan that in Coyote's eyes, their spoons looked a lot more like bowls.

Speaker 2

Coyote gathered up the big wooden spoons.

Speaker 2

Then he set to work stacking them on his head, one on top of the other.

Speaker 3

One, two, three.

Speaker 2

Once all three spoons were in place, Coyote hightailed it to the dam and got to work heaving and hauling stones and logs.

Speaker 2

Coyote worked hard, so hard that after a few hours, he had actually managed to create a gap.

Speaker 3

This gap's not quite big enough for a salmon to swim through, but I'll keep at it.

Speaker 3

And any minute now, those fish could be free.

Speaker 2

Coyote was so immersed in his task that he didn't hear thundering footsteps plodding from the forest.

Speaker 2

But he did hear thundering voices.

Speaker 2

Is that Coyote?

Speaker 4

That shaggy rascal is tearing our damn apart.

Speaker 5

So I say we tear him apart.

Speaker 2

The sisters gnashed their teeth and charged toward Coyote.

Speaker 2

吼——

Roar.

Speaker 2

Next thing he knew, the first sister lift her club and smashed him over the head.

Speaker 2

But remember, Coyote was wearing three huge wooden spoons, like three sturdy helmets.

Speaker 2

So when the club came plummeting down, all it did was crash into his top helmet and splinter it apart.

Speaker 3

Nice try, but you'll have to try harder than that.

Speaker 2

Now the second sister raised her club and brought it down on Coyote's noggin.

Speaker 2

But like her sister before her, all she did was break Coyote's middle helmet to pieces.

Speaker 3

还行。

Not bad.

Speaker 3

Not too good either.

Speaker 2

Now it was the third sister's turn.

Speaker 2

She hoisted her club high and gave Coyote's head a wallop.

Speaker 2

呃!

Gah.

Speaker 2

But as you can probably guess, all she succeeded in doing was breaking Coyote's bottom helmet just as he yanked one more stone from the dam and the gap opened wide.

Speaker 3

Sorry to burst your bubble ladies or your dam.

Speaker 2

The sisters watched in horror as their precious salmon pushed through the hole and surged up the river.

Speaker 4

Our fish!

Speaker 4

They're swimming away!

Speaker 5

How dare you steal them from us, Coyote!

Speaker 3

偷?

Steal them?

Speaker 2

Coyote sprang out of the water and onto the opposite bank.

Speaker 3

I'm not stealing anything.

Speaker 3

I'm giving these fish back to the other animals along the river who need the salmon to survive.

Speaker 3

The three of you have been hoarding the fish for yourselves.

Speaker 3

So now you must learn to share.
