Hey, campers.

Speaker 0

Erica Henningsen here, camp counselor for Circle Round Summer Camp.

Speaker 0

Summertime is usually hot, and when you're hot, you probably don't think a lot about snow, unless maybe you could take a big old bite out of some snow to cool off.

Speaker 0

Well, here goes.

Speaker 0

Circle Round's episode, The Snow Eater.

Speaker 2

In your part of the world, what is spring like?

Speaker 2

Do the flowers and trees burst into bloom?

Speaker 2

Can you hear the twittering of birds and the buzzing of bees?

Speaker 2

In some places, springtime is when certain animals emerge from the long winter's nap known as hibernation, including most bears.

Speaker 2

In today's story, we'll learn how the bears' wintertime snooze came to be.

Speaker 2

I'm Rebecca Scheer, and welcome to Circle Round, where storytime happens all the time.

Speaker 2

Today, our story is called The Snow Eater.

Speaker 2

It's based on tales from the Blackfoot, indigenous peoples who traditionally lived in present day Alberta, Canada, and The US state of Montana.

Speaker 2

Some really people came together to bring you our adaptation of this legend, including Cree Summer, who's lent her voice to such animated movies and TV shows as The Patrick Star Show, The Loud House, Rugrats, Muppet Babies, DC Superhero Girls, The Lost Empire, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Good Times, which she also voice directed.

Speaker 2

You grown ups can check out Cree this season on the ABC comedy Abbott Elementary.

Speaker 2

Circle around everyone for the Snow Eater.

Speaker 2

Long ago, a young woman named Apani lived with her grandmother.

Speaker 2

One year, in the middle of a cold, bleak winter, grandmother fell ill.

Speaker 2

And as the old woman lay in bed, her body growing weaker and her breath growing fainter, she called her granddaughter to her side.

Speaker 1

As you know, dear granddaughter, my days on this earth are drawing short.

Speaker 1

Soon I will enter the spirit world of our ancestors.

Speaker 1

But before I go, I wish to give you something.

Speaker 2

The old woman unfurled her fingers and handed a pony a pipe, its long thin stem adorned with paint, beads, feathers, and fur.

Speaker 2

It's beautiful.

Speaker 1

It's also powerful.

Speaker 1

This pipe is a medicine pipe.

Speaker 1

It was given to our people many ages ago by the Thunderchief, and it has the power to do

Speaker 3

great things.

Speaker 3

What kinds of things, grandmother?

Speaker 1

You shall see when the time is right.

Speaker 1

When the time is right.

Speaker 2

Soon after that, Grandmother breathed her last breath and was gone.

Speaker 2

Now that Aponi was on her own, the bleak, bitter winter seemed to drag on and on.

Speaker 2

But then, as she was trudging through the snow and wind one bitingly brisk day, she suddenly realized why.

Speaker 2

The it hasn't come.

Speaker 2

The snow eater hasn't come.

Speaker 2

The Chinook or snow eater is a warm, dry wind you'll find in the Rocky Mountain region of North America.

Speaker 2

It's called the snow eater because when it sweeps down a snowy mountainside, it makes the air so warm and dry that the snow can instantly evaporate.

Speaker 2

It can disappear into thin air before it even has a chance to melt.

Speaker 3

The Chinook should have blown in by now, eaten up the snow and brought the spring.

Speaker 3

If it doesn't come blowing in soon, I'm going to freeze unless I starve first.

Speaker 2

Apani was right.

Speaker 2

Food and firewood were getting harder and harder to come by.

Speaker 2

But one morning, as she was hopelessly scouring the forest for both, she suddenly heard.

Speaker 4

Listen up folks.

Speaker 4

A voice.

Speaker 4

I've got news to share.

Speaker 3

Big news.

Speaker 2

Aponi

Intrigued, Aponi followed the voice to the edge of a snowy clearing.

Speaker 2

She hid behind a frozen tree as the chatty black and white bird known as magpie addressed a group of animals.

Speaker 2

There was fluffy wide eyed owl

Speaker 5

What's the new hoo hoo hoos, magpie?

Speaker 2

Skinny little weasel

Speaker 6

Don't leave us

Speaker 2

啊。

hanging.

Speaker 2

And shaggy coyote.

Speaker 7

Spill the beans already, won't you?

Speaker 4

Alright, friends.

Speaker 4

Brace yourselves.

Speaker 4

I know what happened to the Chinook.

Speaker 1

You do?

Speaker 4

没错。

I do.

Speaker 4

It was stolen

Speaker 6

by Bear.

Speaker 6

Bear stole the Where did that burly bully take it?

Speaker 4

Word has it, he brought the Chinook to a secret den somewhere so he could hoard the warmth for himself.

Speaker 4

After all, he's sick and tired of shivering all winter long just like we are.

Speaker 5

没错。

True.

Speaker 5

But thanks to Bear's greediness, we might never see spring again.

Speaker 6

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 6

We'll all grow colder and hungrier.

Speaker 7

Then the Chinook will stay with Bear forever.

Speaker 3

I wouldn't be sure about that.

Speaker 2

The animals jumped and whipped their heads around as Aponi stepped into view.

Speaker 3

I'm sorry to startle you, but I come as a friend.

Speaker 3

A friend who's every bit as cold and hungry as you are, and every bit as eager to welcome the spring.

Speaker 3

My name is Aponi, and I don't believe the Chinook has to stay with Bear forever.

Speaker 2

The animals exchanged a skeptical look.

Speaker 4

But Bear is bigger than all of us.

Speaker 5

Not to mention burlier.

Speaker 5

And bossier.

Speaker 7

We could never get that bully to set the snow eater free.

Speaker 3

You know what?

Speaker 3

You're probably right.

Speaker 2

Hupani smiled.

Speaker 3

That's why we're gonna take it.

Speaker 6

Take it?

Speaker 3

没错。

Absolutely.

Speaker 3

By working together.

Speaker 3

Magpie, thanks to your long tail and rounded wings, you're a whiz at swooping and diving, right?

Speaker 4

对。

Right.

Speaker 4

而且

And

Speaker 3

Owl, you have incredible hearing and eyesight.

Speaker 3

You can hear and see stuff from miles away.

Speaker 3

True?

Speaker 3

没错。

True.

Speaker 3

Weasel, not only are you lightning fast, but you can flatten your body and slither through the tiniest of cracks.

Speaker 3

Yes?

Speaker 3

对。

Yes.

Speaker 3

And Coyote, you've got strong muscular legs that can push and kick.

Speaker 3

Correct?

Speaker 7

That is correct.

Speaker 7

But what does any of this have to do with taking the Chinook?

Speaker 3

It has everything to do with taking the Chinook.

Speaker 3

If we band together and use our special strengths, I believe we can track down the snow eater and rescue it from bears' clutches.

Speaker 3

Are you with me?

Speaker 2

Magpie, Owl, Weasel, and Coyote were quiet for a moment.

Speaker 2

Then, one by one, they nodded their feathery and furry heads.

Speaker 4

We're with you, Aponi.

Speaker 5

We'll work together.

Speaker 6

We will rescue the Chinook.

Speaker 7

We will set the snow eater free.

Speaker 3

That's the spirit.

Speaker 3

I just have to make one quick stop at home, and then we can get started.

Speaker 3

And listen, friends, with a little courage and a lot of teamwork, I promise spring will finally be sprung.

Speaker 2

How will Lupani and her new friends work as a team to rescue the Snokeater?

Speaker 2

We'll find out what happens after a quick break.

Speaker 2

I'm Rebecca Scheer.

Speaker 2

Welcome back to Circle Round.

Speaker 2

Today, our story is called The Snow Eater.

Speaker 2

Before the break, Aponi and her new friends magpie, owl, Weasel, and Coyote were determined to free the warm Chinook wind or snow eater, from Bear's secret den.

Speaker 2

Upon he stopped home to fetch the medicine pipe her dearly departed grandmother had given her.

Speaker 2

Then she and the animals ventured into the winter wilderness.

Speaker 2

Owl acted as scout, flying ahead and surveying the landscape below.

Speaker 2

As the group passed through an ice sculpted valley beneath a towering mountain, Owl let out a hoot.

Speaker 5

I hear bears grumbles and growls coming from the top of that mountain, and I see a big pile of rocks.

Speaker 5

It looks like the entrance to a secret den.

Speaker 3

Well done, Owl.

Speaker 3

Bear must be up there, which means the Chinook must be up there too.

Speaker 3

Come on, everybody.

Speaker 3

We're going up.

Speaker 2

Slowly but surely, Aponi and the animals made their way up the snow covered slope.

Speaker 2

When they reached the pile of rocks, Aponi turned to Weasel.

Speaker 3

Weasel, I want you to slide beneath these rocks and scurry inside.

Speaker 3

Take a look around the den, then come back out and tell us what you saw.

Speaker 3

You've got it.

Speaker 2

Quick as a wink, Weasel flattened his slender body and slithered under the rocks.

Speaker 2

When he wriggled out a moment later, his dark eyes were shining.

Speaker 6

I saw the Chinook.

Speaker 6

It's in the very back of the den, and it's tied up inside a great big bag.

Speaker 6

Bear is standing over it and watching it like a hawk.

Speaker 3

Nice job, Weasel, and thanks for the heads up.

Speaker 2

Upon he turned to Coyote and Magpie.

Speaker 3

Coyote, Magpie, you're next.

Speaker 3

Coyote, I want you to use those strong legs of yours to move some of these so that Magpie and I can enter the den.

Speaker 3

And once we're in, Magpie, I want you to swoop and dive like your life depends on it.

Speaker 3

Got it?

Speaker 8

Got it.

Speaker 2

Coyote took a breath, then shoved the rocks aside with a kick.

Speaker 2

But just as a pawney and magpie were squeezing through the opening, they heard a deep growl Roar.

Speaker 2

And saw the big, hulking form of bear skulking their way.

Speaker 8

I thought I heard intruders trying to enter my secret den.

Speaker 8

How dare you barge your way in here and

Speaker 2

But before Bear could utter another word, Magpie was flapping her rounded wings, flicking her long tail, and swooping all over him.

Speaker 5

Woah.

Speaker 2

Bear squirmed, wriggled, and writhed as he tried fighting off the dive bombing bird.

Speaker 2

Now that Bear was sufficiently distracted I'm gonna go.

Speaker 2

Akane skirted past him, seized the bag with the Chinook inside, and hoisted it over her shoulder.

Speaker 3

I've got it.

Speaker 3

Magpie, I've got the Chinook.

Speaker 3

Go out and join the others.

Speaker 3

I'll take it from here.

Speaker 2

Magpie

Magpie did as she was told.

Speaker 2

But the moment she winged her way out of the den, Bear made an unexpectedly quick recovery.

Speaker 2

He let out a roar, then scrambled to his feet and came lumbering toward a punny.

Speaker 8

You are trying to steal my Chinook, Are you?

Speaker 3

你的Chinook?

Your Chinook?

Speaker 3

The last time I checked, the snow eater belongs to everyone.

Speaker 8

Not anymore.

Speaker 8

It's mine now.

Speaker 8

And guess what?

Speaker 8

So are you.

Speaker 2

Aponi didn't have a second to lose as Bear lunged at her with another roar.

Speaker 2

She reached into her pocket

Speaker 3

and pulled out the medicine pipe.

Speaker 3

Grandmother said to use this pipe when the time was right, and this time seems as right as any.

Speaker 2

Quick as a wink, she put the pipe to her lips, puffed out her cheeks, and blew.

Speaker 2

A cloud of smoke came bursting out, enveloping Bear in a gauzy haze.

Speaker 2

At first, he froze, standing still as a stone.

Speaker 2

Then slowly, his head lulled backward, his jaws opened wide, and he let out a yawn so powerful, Aponi could feel his hot breath on her face.

Speaker 8

Gosh.

Speaker 8

It's a bedtime already.

Speaker 8

I'm so drowsy all of a sudden.

Speaker 2

Bear staggered backwards, swaying and tottering.

Speaker 8

I don't know why.

Speaker 8

I can hardly keep my eyes open.

Speaker 8

Maybe if I just lay down and took a little nap.

Speaker 2

And with that, he crumpled to the ground, curled into a big burly ball, and dropped off to sleep.

Speaker 2

As Bear snored away, Aponi hurried out of the den and back to her friends.

Speaker 3

Okay, everybody.

Speaker 3

I have the Chinook, but I need your help getting this bag open.

Speaker 3

Bear's knots are super tight.

Speaker 2

The animal set to work undoing the knots.

Speaker 2

Madpie used her long black beak.

Speaker 2

Owl used her thick sharp talons.

Speaker 2

Weasel used his pointy little teeth.

Speaker 2

Coyote used his powerful jaws.

Speaker 2

And then, at long last, the bag burst open and out flew the Chinook.

Speaker 2

After sweeping across the mountain top, the warm, dry snow eater rushed down to the world below.

Speaker 2

In an instant, the blanket of snow vanished.

Speaker 3

We did it, friends.

Speaker 3

We freed the Chinook.

Speaker 3

We freed the snow eater.

Speaker 2

But we better get out of here.

Speaker 2

Bear could wake up any minute.

Speaker 2

A pawnee, magpie, owl, weasel, and coyote scurried down the slope, and just in time too, because who should come roaring out of his den, but a very angry bear.

Speaker 8

They're gone.

Speaker 8

Those steves are gone, and so is my Chinook.

Speaker 8

Now I'll have to endure the icy cold winters again.

Speaker 8

除非

Unless

Speaker 2

A gleam came into his eye.

Speaker 8

Unless I sleep through the winters.

Speaker 8

That nap did feel good.

Speaker 8

Every year when winter comes, I can just conk out.

Speaker 2

And wouldn't you know it?

Speaker 2

That's exactly what he's done ever since.

Speaker 2

Bear spends all winter hibernating, snoozing and dreaming in his den.

Speaker 2

And then, when the Chinook comes blowing in, and its warm, dry breeze eats up the snow, the world springs back to life, and Bear does too.

Speaker 2

Now it's your turn.

Speaker 2

Think about a time you were part of a team.

Speaker 2

Perhaps you and your family baked a cake together or you built a fort with friends.

Speaker 2

Maybe your class put on a play or you played on a sports team with your fellow athletes.

Speaker 2

Find some paper and something to draw with, and make a picture of you and your team working together.

Speaker 2

Share your picture with a grown up in your life, then ask them to tell you about a time they used teamwork to achieve a goal.

Speaker 2

No matter our age, learning to be part of a team can help us practice patience, respect, and cooperation.

Speaker 2

It can also help us develop trust in other people and confidence in ourselves.
