Speaker 1

Nadia the peddler journeyed from place to place, selling knickknacks and trinkets by day, and sleeping in her ragged, patched up tent by night.

Speaker 1

Nadia loved seeing new places, having new adventures, and meeting new people.

Speaker 1

While she was content with her life, she couldn't help but feel like something was missing.

Speaker 2

A child.

Speaker 2

With this itinerant existence of mine, I've never been able to settle down and have a bouncing baby of my own.

Speaker 2

But perhaps I will someday.

Speaker 1

One evening, Nadia was in a misty moonlit forest, pitching her ragged, patched up tent when her stomach let loose a growl.

Speaker 2

Oh, I was so busy peddling at that bazaar today.

Speaker 2

I didn't eat a morsel, and my belly is emptier than a corn husk in winter.

Speaker 2

I'll go find something to eat in the woods.

Speaker 1

As Nadia wove her way through the forest, she spotted a nest where a songbird was feeding her hatchlings some worms.

Speaker 1

She glimpsed a deer and her fawn nibbling a shrub.

Speaker 1

She spied a mother squirrel carrying tree nuts to her pups.

Speaker 2

Oh, look at all those good mothers keeping their babies healthy and fed.

Speaker 2

What lucky ducks they are to have such beautiful children Or lucky birds, deer, and squirrels, I guess.

Speaker 1

While Nadia didn't care for worms or shrubs, roasted nuts sounded like a decent snack.

Speaker 1

But the moment she started plucking beech nuts off a beech tree.

Speaker 1

Hello there.

Speaker 1

Nadia stopped and cast her head about.

Speaker 1

Who said that?

Speaker 2

Where are you?

Speaker 1

When her gaze returned to the tree, Nadia got her answer.

Speaker 1

For peering out from a hollow in the smooth gray trunk was a woman with long silvery hair and a dazzling smile.

Speaker 0

I hope I didn't startle you, Nadia.

Speaker 2

Startle me?

Speaker 2

You scared the living daylights out of me.

Speaker 2

And who are you?

Speaker 2

How do you know my name?

Speaker 2

And what are you doing inside this tree?

Speaker 0

I'm Matuya, spirit of the beech tree.

Speaker 0

I know your name because I've been watching you, Nadia.

Speaker 0

I have heard you voice your deepest wish, so I'm here to grant it.

Speaker 1

Nadia's heart did a backflip.

Speaker 2

You mean my wish of having a child?

Speaker 2

You can make it come true?

Speaker 0

I can, but I'll need your help.

Speaker 0

So listen carefully.

Speaker 0

Tomorrow, you must find a pumpkin as big and round as a full moon.

Speaker 0

Scoop out the seeds and pour it full of milk.

Speaker 0

Drink the milk down, and I promise, in due time, you shall have your child.

Speaker 2

I shall have my own child.

Speaker 2

Thank you, Matuya.

Speaker 2

I promise I shall do everything you say.

Speaker 1

Nadia grinned and turned to go.

Speaker 1

Matuya stopped her.

Speaker 0

And one more thing, Nadia.

Speaker 0

When your child is grown and it's time for them to make their way in the world, you must give them this.

Speaker 1

Matuya reached out and handed Nadia a wooden box.

Speaker 1

It was about the size of

Speaker 0

a shoebox, but flatter.

Speaker 0

This box is carved from the wood of this beech tree.

Speaker 0

Your child must bring it on their travels.

Speaker 0

It'll be of use to them.

Speaker 0

It'll ensure they're every bit as happy as they deserve to be.

Speaker 1

And with that, she flashed another dazzling smile and vanished.

Speaker 1

Nadia hardly slept a wink that night.

Speaker 1

Come daybreak, she rushed to the bazaar and sold just enough knickknacks and trinkets to buy a big round pumpkin and a fresh bottle of milk.

Speaker 1

She scooped out the pumpkin seeds, poured in the milk, then drank it down.

Speaker 1

And approximately nine months later, she gave birth to a bright eyed baby boy.

Speaker 1

When she took him into her arms, his cries gave way to contented coos.

Speaker 2

Hello, my precious one.

Speaker 2

Look how happy you are with that gummy, toothless grin.

Speaker 2

I shall name you happy so that you'll be joyful and content all the rest of your days.

Speaker 1

Nadia worked hard to make Happy's life every bit as joyful as his name.

Speaker 1

And even though mother and son faced plenty of hard times, Happy kept on smiling.

Speaker 1

The years went by, and before Nadia knew it, it was time for her son to make his way in the world.

Speaker 2

Happy, raising you has been a dream come true.

Speaker 2

Now that you're grown and starting your own life, I must give you this.

Speaker 1

She held out the beechwood box.

Speaker 1

Happy

Happy marveled at its dense, strong, pale cream surface.

Speaker 3

This box is beautiful.

Speaker 3

Thank you, mother.

Speaker 2

You're very welcome.

Speaker 2

I have it on good authority that this box will be of use to you, Happy.

Speaker 2

So keep it safe, and may fortune smile upon you wherever you go.

Speaker 1

Happy

Happy tucked the beechwood box into his satchel.

Speaker 1

Then he grabbed a walking stick and set out into the world.

Speaker 1

He had just wandered into a new kingdom when he overheard some villagers chatting in the town square.

Speaker 4

Can you believe the king's latest challenge?

Speaker 5

The king is issuing another challenge?

Speaker 5

Last I heard, he was offering 10 chests of gold to anyone who could read his mind, but nobody managed to do it.

Speaker 4

And before that, he offered 10 chests of gold to anyone who could kidnap a dragon, and nobody could do that either.

Speaker 6

But you know how eccentric the king is.

Speaker 6

When his royal majesty isn't issuing another odd challenge, he's making another odd rule.

Speaker 5

是的

Right.

Speaker 5

Like how every evening from 05:00 to 06:00, everyone in the

Speaker 7

kingdom must fall silent so he can listen to the sound of the wind.

Speaker 4

He calls it the listening hour.

Speaker 4

And woe unto anyone who dis respects the listening hour.

Speaker 6

Major woe.

Speaker 6

Well,

Speaker 4

speaking of silence and sound, that's what the king's latest challenge is all about.

Speaker 4

He's offering 10 chests of gold to anyone who can produce a sound he has never heard before.

Speaker 5

A sound he has never heard before?

Speaker 4

The king has journeyed to every country on Earth.

Speaker 6

What sound could possibly be new to him?

Speaker 4

I don't know.

Speaker 4

But whoever figures it out is going to be a very rich person.

Speaker 4

A very rich person indeed.

Speaker 1

Happy slowed his step.

Speaker 1

He thought about the king's challenge.

Speaker 1

Then he thought about Nadia.

Speaker 3

She worked so hard to raise me and care for me all those years.

Speaker 3

If I could give her 10 chests of gold, she would never have to work again.

Speaker 3

She would be set for life.

Speaker 1

Happy meandered through the village, musing about what new sound he might bring the king.

Speaker 3

What if I bring him the call of an exotic animal?

Speaker 3

Of course, that means I have to find an exotic animal.

Speaker 3

So maybe the sound of an undiscovered language?

Speaker 3

But if it's undiscovered, then there's no way I could

Speaker 1

Hold your tongue.

Speaker 1

Happy swung round, and there, wearing a striped uniform and an angry expression, was a member of the king's guard.

Speaker 3

I'm sorry.

Speaker 3

What did you say?

Speaker 3

And why are you whispering?

Speaker 8

I said, hold your tongue.

Speaker 8

It's 05:00, the listening hour.

Speaker 1

Happy was perplexed, but then he remembered what the villagers said about the king.

Speaker 5

Every evening from 05:00

Speaker 7

to 06:00, everyone in the kingdom must fall silent so he can listen to the sound of the wind.

Speaker 4

He calls it the listening hour, and woe unto anyone who disrespects the listening hour.

Speaker 1

A chill raced down Happy's spine.

Speaker 1

Clearly, he had disrespected the listening hour.

Speaker 1

He fixed the guard with pleading eyes.

Speaker 3

Please, sir.

Speaker 3

I'm new to this kingdom, and I just learned about this whole listening hour thing a little while ago in a Silence.

Speaker 1

The guard extended an arm and grabbed Happy by the scruff of his coat.

Speaker 8

Newcomer or not, you have defied the king's sacred listening hour, and now you must pay.

Speaker 1

What will happen to our hapless hero, Happy?

Speaker 1

We'll find out after a quick break.

Welcome back to Circle Round.

Speaker 1

I'm Rebecca Scheer.

Speaker 1

Today, our story is called The Beechwood Box.

Speaker 1

Before the break, with little more than a walking stick and a beechwood box gifted by his mother, Happy was seeking his fortune in the world.

Speaker 1

He soon learned of a quirky king who would reward 10 chests of gold to anyone who could present him with a brand new sound.

Speaker 1

Before Happy could brainstorm a solution, he accidentally violated the king's notorious listening hour and was thrown into the palace dungeon.

Speaker 3

Oh, I hope I'm not stuck in this dungeon forever.

Speaker 3

It's so dark and so cold.

Speaker 3

There's not a flicker of light or warmth anywhere.

Speaker 0

Are you sure about that?

Speaker 1

The chilly darkness gave way to a warm glowing light.

Speaker 1

And who should Happy spy in front of him with long silvery hair and a dazzling smile, but the tree spirit, Matuya.

Speaker 1

你好啊,Happy。

Greetings, Happy.

Speaker 0

Though I wish we were meeting under happier circumstances.

Speaker 1

Happy's jaw dropped.

Speaker 3

Who are you?

Speaker 3

How do you know my name?

Speaker 3

And what are you doing inside this dungeon?

Speaker 0

Your mother asked me some very similar questions some time ago.

Speaker 0

You know my mother?

Speaker 0

I do.

Speaker 0

I made Nadia's acquaintance before you were born, you see.

Speaker 0

I'm Matuya, spirit of the beech tree.

Speaker 3

Spirit of the what?

Speaker 0

The beech tree.

Speaker 0

Smooth gray bark produces nuts, has dense, strong, pale cream wood, like the wood in the box your mother gave you?

Speaker 1

Happy's eyes went as wide as pumpkin pies.

Speaker 3

The box my mother gave me?

Speaker 0

How do you know about that?

Speaker 0

Because I gave it to her before you were born.

Speaker 0

And thanks to that box, you will not be stuck in this dungeon forever.

Speaker 3

I won't?

Speaker 0

Happy, you deserve a life every bit as joyful as your name, and your beet wood box will make it so.

Speaker 0

Do you have it with you?

Speaker 3

Of course, I carry it with me always.

Speaker 3

很好。

Good.

Speaker 0

May I see it?

Speaker 0

Happy placed the box

Speaker 1

in Matuya's hands.

Speaker 1

She lifted it to her face.

Speaker 1

She held it under her eyes, and then she cried.

Speaker 1

Once the box was dripping with glistening tears, she held it to her lips and laughed.

Speaker 1

Happy's brow wrinkled in confusion.

Speaker 3

Matuya, what's going on?

Speaker 0

That remains to be seen and heard.

Speaker 0

Might you have a stick?

Speaker 3

I have my walking stick.

Speaker 3

给你。

Here.

Speaker 1

He handed Matuya the stick.

Speaker 1

She promptly snapped it in half.

Speaker 3

What did you do that for?

Speaker 0

看着。

Watch.

Speaker 0

I shall attach one piece of the stick to the box to make a neck.

Speaker 3

A neck.

Speaker 0

And then I will string the box's neck with these.

Speaker 1

Matuya plucked out several strands of her long silvery hair.

Speaker 1

She ran the hairs down the neck, across the box, and fastened them tight.

Speaker 1

She then picked up the other half of the stick.

Speaker 1

After plucking out more strands of hair, she strung them across it from the top of the stick to the bottom.

Speaker 0

Happy, this is a bow.

Speaker 0

A bow.

Speaker 0

没错。

That's right.

Speaker 0

I want you to rest the box on your shoulder and hold its neck with one hand.

Speaker 0

With your other hand, you must hold on to the bow.

Speaker 0

Rub the bow strings against the neck strings and here what happens.

Speaker 1

She gave Happy the box and bow.

Speaker 1

Then she flashed one of her dazzling smiles and was gone.

Speaker 1

The dungeon went dark.

Speaker 1

Happy

Happy let out a shiver.

Speaker 1

Then he did as the tree spirit requested.

Speaker 1

He rested his new contraption under his chin and put bow to box.

Speaker 1

The strings began to vibrate, and suddenly, the air was filled with a warm, rich, resonant sound.

Speaker 1

At first, it was slow and sad.

Speaker 1

Then it grew lively and gay, so lively and gay, it was like the dungeon was flooded with light.

Speaker 1

And as it happens, it actually was.

Speaker 1

The door at the top of the steps had flown open, letting in a glow of sunshine from the outside world.

Speaker 1

And who should come bounding down the steps with an astonished look on his face but the king?

Speaker 7

What in the world

Speaker 1

are you doing?

Speaker 1

Happy dropped his bow.

Speaker 1

He gaped at the king, unsure of what to say.

Speaker 3

I I, I

Speaker 7

No need to speak, man.

Speaker 7

Go back to what you were doing.

Speaker 7

Go back to making that magnificent sound with that wondrous box.

Speaker 1

Happy let out a long exhale.

Speaker 1

Magnificent sound, wondrous box.

Speaker 1

Here he was thinking he had displeased the king when it was actually the opposite.

Speaker 1

Beaming with delight and relief, Happy tucked the box under his chin, held up the bow, and began to play.
