Speaker 0

波士顿。

Boston.

Speaker 0

回想一下你曾经抱怨过的时刻。

Think about a time you complained.

Speaker 0

我们都做过这样的事,抱怨一些让我们烦心的人或事。

We've all done it, griping about something or someone we're annoyed with.

Speaker 0

有时候,我们的抱怨是有道理的。

Sometimes our complaints are well founded.

Speaker 0

我们感到不快是很正常的。

It makes sense that we're irked.

Speaker 0

但正如我们今天的故事所要展现的,合理与荒谬之间往往只有一线之隔。

But as we'll hear in today's tale, there can be an awfully fine line between sense and nonsense.

Speaker 0

我是丽贝卡·谢尔,欢迎收听《Circle Round》,这里的故事随时上演。

I'm Rebecca Scheer, and welcome to Circle Round, where story time happens all the time.

Speaker 0

今天的故事叫《第四根柱子》。

Today, our story is called The Fourth Post.

Speaker 0

这个故事灵感源自多个地方的传说,包括英国、意大利、俄罗斯和菲律宾。

It's inspired by tales told in a number of places, including Great Britain, Italy, Russia, and The Philippines.

Speaker 0

许多优秀的人共同为我们带来了这个民间故事的版本,其中包括曾出演ABC喜剧《黑人一家》中的乔什和尼克儿童频道剧集《雷霆曼家族》中的布拉德福德校长的杰夫·米查姆。

Some really great people came together to bring you our version of this folktale, including Geoff Meacham, known for playing Josh in the ABC comedy Black ish and Principal Bradford in the Nickelodeon series The Thundermans.

Speaker 0

他目前正在迪士尼少儿频道系列《吸血鬼小魔女》中饰演吸血鬼爸爸博里斯·亨特利。

He's currently starring as vampire dad Boris Hauntley in the Disney Junior series Vampirina.

Speaker 0

所以,大家围成一圈,来听第四个柱子的故事。

So circle around everyone for the fourth post.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲是一名代课老师。

Alfie was a substitute teacher.

Speaker 0

多年来,他一直代替全职教师在他们需要休假时临时授课。

For years he had been stepping in for full time instructors when they needed time off.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲非常热爱教学,但他渴望拥有自己的班级。

Alfie adored teaching, but he yearned for a class of his own.

Speaker 0

所以,当他申请到一所遥远学校的全职职位并获得成功时,你可以想象他有多高兴。

So you can imagine his delight when he applied for a full time job at a faraway school and got it.

Speaker 1

这真是太棒了。

This is so great.

Speaker 1

我要搬到我的新城镇了。

I'll move to my new town.

Speaker 1

我会租一套公寓。

I'll rent an apartment.

Speaker 1

等我开始工作后,就能攒够钱买房子了。

Then once I start my job, I can save up enough money to buy a house.

Speaker 0

这看起来是个不错的计划。

It seemed like a great plan.

Speaker 0

但当阿尔菲到达新城镇时,他有了一个意想不到的发现。

But when Alfie arrived in his new town, he made an unexpected discovery.

Speaker 1

哦,这里没有一套公寓是我能负担得起的。

Oh, there's not one apartment around here that I can actually afford.

Speaker 1

一切都太贵了。

Everything is so expensive.

Speaker 1

但我总得有个地方住。

Well, I need to live somewhere.

Speaker 1

所以如果租不到房子,我就自己盖一个。

So if I can't rent a place, then I'll build one.

Speaker 1

我会收集一些木头,在镇子边缘搭一个温馨的小木屋。

I'll scrounge up some wood and put up a cozy cabin at the edge of town.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲开始收集他能找到的任何木料碎片。

Alfie got to work collecting whatever bits and scraps of lumber he could find.

Speaker 0

他设法收集到了足够的木料来建造地板、天花板和墙壁,但只够做三个立柱。

He managed to gather enough wood for the floor, ceiling, and walls, but he only had enough for three posts.

Speaker 1

我需要四个立柱来支撑我的小木屋屋顶。

I need four posts to hold up my cabin's roof.

Speaker 1

既然我买不起第四个立柱,我就去问问当地的木匠。

Since I can't afford to buy a fourth post, I'll go and see the local carpenter.

Speaker 1

我想问问能不能借一根立柱。

I'll ask if I can borrow a post.

Speaker 1

嗯。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

等我开始教书、存够钱后,我就还给他们。

I'll pay them back once I start my teaching job and have some money in the bank.

Speaker 0

当阿尔菲走进木匠的店铺时,一位穿着工装裤、系着工具带、名牌上写着‘阿尔伯特’的壮实男子迎了上来。

When Alfie entered the carpenter's shop, he was greeted by a stocky fellow wearing overalls, a tool belt, and a name tag that read Albert.

Speaker 2

你好啊。

Hello there.

Speaker 2

阿尔菲,我能帮你什么忙吗?

How can I help you to Alfie?

Speaker 2

阿尔菲·贝特·苏普?

Alfie Bet Soup?

Speaker 2

是你吗?

Is that you?

Speaker 0

阿尔菲的胃一下子翻腾起来。

Alfie's stomach did a flip flop.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲·贝特·苏普是他上学时的绰号。

Alfie Bet Soup was his nickname back in school.

Speaker 0

这个绰号源于学校食堂常吃的字母汤——鸡汤里漂着面条字母,是被一个强壮又专横的校霸起的,那孩子名叫

Inspired by the old cafeteria standby of alphabet soup, chicken broth with pasta alphabet letters, the name was given to him by the school bully, a stocky, bossy kid named

Speaker 1

阿尔伯特。

Albert.

Speaker 1

哇。

Wow.

Speaker 1

我没认出你。

I I didn't recognize you.

Speaker 2

真的吗?

Really?

Speaker 2

但我们小时候一起度过了那么多时光。

But we spent so much quality time together when we were kids.

Speaker 2

还记得你以前帮我做作业吗?

Remember how you used to help me with my homework?

Speaker 0

阿尔菲皱了皱眉。

Alfie cringed.

Speaker 0

他从来没有帮过阿尔伯特做作业。

He had not helped Albert with his homework.

Speaker 0

他曾经替他做过。

He had done it for him.

Speaker 0

如果他敢拒绝,就会发现自己的雨靴里堆满了沙子,或者背包里塞了一罐剃须泡沫。

If he dared to refuse, he would find a heap of sand in his rain boots or a cans worth of shaving cream in his backpack.

Speaker 2

那么,阿尔菲·贝茨oup,今天我能帮你什么忙?

So tell me, Alfie Bettsoup, how can I help you today?

Speaker 0

阿尔菲犹豫了。

Alfie hesitated.

Speaker 0

他不想向儿时的死对头求助,但他还有什么别的选择呢?

He didn't want to ask his childhood nemesis for a favor, but what choice did he have?

Speaker 1

嗯,阿尔伯特,我正在找一根木桩,好完成镇子边缘那间小屋的建造。

Well, Albert, I'm looking for a wooden post so I can finish building a cabin at the edge of town.

Speaker 1

我目前买不起木桩,但我刚得到一份在学校的教职,是个很棒的新工作。

I can't afford to buy a post at the moment, but I've got this great new gig teaching at the school.

Speaker 1

等我开始赚钱,我就能还你钱。

Once I start earning money, I can pay you back.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲屏住呼吸,等待艾伯特的回应。

Alfie held his breath awaiting Albert's response.

Speaker 0

如果他们还是孩子,艾伯特肯定会抓住阿尔菲的头给他一个脑瓜崩,或者拽他的内裤给他一个裤裆提拉。

If they were still kids, Albert would no doubt grab Alfie's head and give him a noogie or grab his underwear and give him a wedgie.

Speaker 0

但相反,他抓住了阿尔菲的手,握了握。

But instead, he grabbed Alfie's hand and gave it a shake.

Speaker 2

成交了。

You've got yourself a deal.

Speaker 2

你可以用我的一根柱子。

You could use one of my posts.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲几乎不敢相信自己的耳朵。

Alfie could hardly believe his ears.

Speaker 1

我可以用你的一根柱子?

I can use one of your posts?

Speaker 1

太棒了。

That's amazing.

Speaker 1

谢谢你,阿尔伯特。

Thank you, Albert.

Speaker 1

我一有能力就马上还你。

I'll pay you back just as soon as I can.

Speaker 2

哎呀,别这样。

Oh, come on.

Speaker 2

老朋友之间不用付钱。

An old friend doesn't have to pay me anything.

Speaker 0

一分钱都不用。

Not 1¢.

Speaker 0

埃尔菲目瞪口呆。

Elfie's jaw dropped.

Speaker 0

老朋友,一分钱都不用。

An old friend, not 1¢.

Speaker 0

显然,他昔日的对手已经改过自新了。

Clearly, his old nemesis had turned over a new leaf.

Speaker 1

阿尔伯特,我非常感激你这么做。

Albert, I'm so grateful for this.

Speaker 1

我马上就会用上这根木桩。

I'll put the post to use right away.

Speaker 0

他确实这么做了。

And he did.

Speaker 0

现在阿尔菲有了第四根木桩,他日以继夜地建造他的小屋。

Now that Alfie had his fourth post, he worked day and night to finish his cabin.

Speaker 0

到暑假中期,小屋终于建好了。

By the middle of summer break, it was done.

Speaker 0

一天清晨,阿尔菲正躺在一张他捡来的二手床垫上打盹,突然有人猛烈敲门,把他惊醒了。

Early one morning, while snoozing on a secondhand mattress he had found, Alfie was jolted awake by a pounding at the door.

Speaker 1

会是谁呢?

Who could that be?

Speaker 1

我没指望会有访客。

I'm not expecting any visitors.

Speaker 1

哦,现在才刚过日出。

Oh, and it's barely past sunrise.

Speaker 0

当他趿拉着拖鞋打开门时,发现门外站着的是谁呢?

When he slid into his slippers and pulled the door open, who should he find standing outside?

Speaker 2

早上好,阿尔菲·贝特·苏普。

Good morning, Alfie Bet Soup.

Speaker 2

但是,阿尔伯特。

But Albert.

Speaker 2

我是来收钱的。

I've come to collect my cash.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲打了个哈欠,揉了揉眼睛。

Elfie yawned and rubbed his eyes.

Speaker 1

对不起,阿尔伯特。

I'm sorry, Albert.

Speaker 1

我刚醒,还有点迷糊。

I I just woke up, and I and I'm kinda groggy.

Speaker 1

你来收什么钱?

What cash have you come to collect?

Speaker 2

你欠我的邮费钱。

The cash you owe me for the post.

Speaker 1

我欠你邮费的钱?

The cash I owe you for the post?

Speaker 0

阿尔菲不再昏昏欲睡了。

Alfie was no longer groggy.

Speaker 0

他惊呆了。

He was gobsmacked.

Speaker 1

但是阿尔伯特,你之前说老朋友不用付你一分钱,一美分都不用。

But Albert, you told me that an old friend doesn't have to pay you anything, not 1¢.

Speaker 2

是啊。

Yeah.

Speaker 2

我确实这么跟你说过。

I did tell you that.

Speaker 2

但别闹了,阿尔菲·贝特·苏普。

But come on, Alfie Bet Soup.

Speaker 2

你什么时候成老朋友了?

Since when are you an old friend?

Speaker 0

阿尔菲感觉自己的心直沉到拖鞋里。

Alfie felt his heart plunge into his slippers.

Speaker 1

我简直不敢相信。

I can't believe this.

Speaker 1

你根本不是认真的。

You weren't being serious.

Speaker 1

这全是骗局。

It was all a trick.

Speaker 1

当然了,

Of course,

Speaker 2

这确实是个骗局,阿尔菲·贝茨·苏普。

it was a trick, Alfie Betz Soup.

Speaker 2

你知道我总是喜欢捉弄你。

You know I always love pulling a fast one on you.

Speaker 2

就像那次我在更衣室把淋浴头拧下来,往里面放了辣椒,然后在你洗澡前又拧了回去。

Like the time I unscrewed the showerhead in the locker room and put hot pepper inside, then I screwed the head back on before you took your shower.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲打了个寒战。

Alfie shuddered.

Speaker 0

那次恶作剧之后,他身上辣味好几天都没散掉。

He had smelled spicy for days after that stunt.

Speaker 1

听好了,阿尔伯特。

Listen, Albert.

Speaker 1

我跟你说过,我没钱。

I told you, I don't have any money.

Speaker 1

等我开始教书后,迟早会还你钱。

Once my teaching job starts, I can eventually pay you back.

Speaker 1

但在那之前,不行。

But until then, Negative.

Speaker 1

我不能

I don't

Speaker 2

别想蒙我。

Not on your Nelly.

Speaker 2

你要么现在给我现金,要么给我欠条。

You either give me the cash now or you give me the post.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲举起了双手。

Alfie threw up his hands.

Speaker 1

我不能给你欠条。

I can't give you the post.

Speaker 1

听好了。

Look.

Speaker 1

它支撑着我小屋的屋顶。

It's holding up the roof of my cabin.

Speaker 1

如果我把它拆了,整个屋子都会塌下来。

The whole place will fall down if I take it out.

Speaker 2

这不关我的事。

Not my problem.

Speaker 2

看。

Look.

Speaker 2

如果你既给不了我现金,又不肯给我那根柱子,那我就给你发传票。

If you can't give me the cash and you won't give me the post, then I'm giving you a summons.

Speaker 2

你和我得去首都见法官。

You and I will go see the judge in the capital city.

Speaker 2

听说她是个非常严厉的人。

Word has it she's one tough cookie.

Speaker 2

所以,阿尔菲·贝特·苏普,明天一早做好准备,我要带你上法庭。

So be ready first thing tomorrow, Alfie Bet Soup, because I am taking you to court.

Speaker 0

当阿尔菲和阿尔伯特面对法官时,会发生什么?

What will happen when Alfie and Albert face the judge?

Speaker 0

我们稍作休息后就会知道。

We'll find out after a quick break.

Speaker 0

我是丽贝卡·谢尔。

I'm Rebecca Scheer.

Speaker 0

欢迎回到《圆圈故事》。

Welcome back to Circle Round.

Speaker 0

今天,我们的故事是关于阿尔菲的童年宿敌阿尔伯特,正带他前往遥远的首都法庭。

Today, our story is the break, Alfie's childhood nemesis, Albert, was taking him to court in the capital city, many miles away.

Speaker 0

他们走在路上时,阿尔菲很少说话。

Alfie didn't talk much as they walked down the road.

Speaker 0

然而,阿尔伯特却喋喋不休。

Albert, however, prattled on.

Speaker 0

记得那次

Remember that

Speaker 2

我把你的屁股用口香糖粘在椅子上的事吗?

time I stuck your rear end to your desk chair with chewing gum?

Speaker 2

那真是太棒了。

That was awesome.

Speaker 0

还有。

And on.

Speaker 2

还有那次,我用一个水壶装满水和通心粉奶酪粉,告诉你那是橙汁,那件事怎么样?

And how about the time I filled a pitcher with water and mac and cheese powder, and I told you it was orange juice?

Speaker 2

那也很棒。

That was awesome too.

Speaker 0

到了午餐时间,阿尔菲的耐心快要耗尽,肚子也开始咕咕叫。

By lunchtime, Alfie's patience was dwindling, and his tummy was grumbling.

Speaker 0

他坐在一个树桩上,从背包里拿出一些面包和奶酪。

He sat down on a stump and pulled some bread and cheese from his rucksack.

Speaker 0

当阿尔伯特看到食物时,他的脸一下子亮了起来。

When Albert saw the food, his face lit up.

Speaker 2

哦,那是午餐吗?

Oh, is that lunch?

Speaker 2

我要拿走那个。

I'll be taking that.

Speaker 0

在阿尔菲抗议之前,阿尔伯特就抓起面包和奶酪,开始大口啃起来。

Before Alfie could protest, Albert grabbed the bread and cheese and began gnawing away.

Speaker 2

这让我想起你以前在学校里和我分享午餐的时候。

This reminds me of when you used to share your lunch with me at school.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲翻了个白眼。

Alfie rolled his eyes.

Speaker 0

他从未和阿尔伯特分享过自己的午餐。

He had never shared his lunch with Albert.

Speaker 0

他是直接给他的。

He had given it to him.

Speaker 0

否则,他的课桌上可能会爬满香蕉蛞蝓。

Otherwise, he might find his desk crawling with banana slugs.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲叹了口气,无助地看着阿尔伯特把他的午餐一扫而空。

Alfie sighed and watched helplessly as Albert polished off his lunch.

Speaker 0

然后他们继续上路了。

Then they continued on their way.

Speaker 0

他们走到一座横跨河流的高桥时停了下来。

They stopped when they reached a high bridge spanning a river.

Speaker 1

天哪。

Yikes.

Speaker 1

这座桥太旧了。

This bridge is so old.

Speaker 1

它的梁柱已经腐烂,正不断崩塌落入水中。

Its its beams are rotting and crumbling into the water.

Speaker 1

我们根本不可能走过这座桥。

There there's no way we can walk across.

Speaker 2

我通常不同意你的看法,阿尔菲·贝佐普,但这次你对了。

I don't normally agree with you, Alfie Betzoup, but you're right.

Speaker 2

我想我们只能游泳过去了。

I guess we'll have to swim instead.

Speaker 2

跳水。

Cannonball.

Speaker 0

阿尔伯特助跑后一跃而下。

Albert took a running leap.

Speaker 0

下面可真够高的。

It was a long way down.

Speaker 0

他终于落水后,狗刨式游到对岸,朝阿尔菲喊道。

After finally hitting the water, he doggy paddled to the other shore and called up to Alfie.

Speaker 2

快下来吧。

Come on down.

Speaker 2

水挺好的。

The water's fine.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲做好准备,跳了下去。

Alfie braced himself and jumped.

Speaker 1

我来了。

Here I go.

Speaker 0

但他入水时,还撞到了一个正在水中洗澡的人。

But when he hit the water, he also hit a man who was bathing in it.

Speaker 1

天哪。

Oh my goodness.

Speaker 1

先生,非常抱歉。

I am so sorry, sir.

Speaker 1

桥太高了。

The bridge was so high.

Speaker 1

我没看见你。

I I didn't see you.

Speaker 0

那人皱起了眉头。

The man scowled.

Speaker 0

你可能没

You may not have

Speaker 3

看见我,但你砸到我了。

seen me, but you landed on me.

Speaker 3

我觉得你扭伤了我的小指。

I think you sprained my pinky finger.

Speaker 3

你甚至可能把我的手指弄断了。

You might even have broken it.

Speaker 3

哦,为此,我要告你上法庭。

Oh, for that, I am taking you to court.

Speaker 3

艾尔菲的心猛地一紧。

Elfie's heart clenched.

Speaker 1

哦,我理解您很生气,先生。

Oh, I understand that you're upset, sir.

Speaker 1

而且我再次向您道歉。

And again, I'm sorry.

Speaker 1

不如我送您去最近的医院,然后

How about I take you to the nearest hospital and

Speaker 3

我们不。

we No.

Speaker 3

我要告你上法庭。

I am taking you to court.

Speaker 3

你会为你的所作所为付出代价。

You'll pay for what you've done.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲叹了口气。

Alfie heaved a sigh.

Speaker 0

然后他把那个人拉到河对岸,阿尔伯特正带着得意的笑容在那里等着。

Then he pulled the man to the other side of the river where Albert was waiting with a smirk.

Speaker 2

干得好,阿尔菲·贝特·苏普。

Way to go, Alfie Bet Soup.

Speaker 2

这一手玩得真溜。

That was a real smooth move.

Speaker 2

现在你要面对两项罪名而不是一项了。

Now you'll face the judge for two crimes instead of one.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲咬紧牙关,跟着阿尔伯特和那个男人沿路走去。

Alfie gritted his teeth and followed Albert and the man down the road.

Speaker 0

他们快要走到一个泥泞的池塘时,看到了一个不同寻常的景象。

They were nearing a muddy pond when they laid eyes on an unusual sight.

Speaker 0

在池塘黏稠的淤泥中挣扎的是一只极其微小的仓鼠。

Flailing around in the pond's sticky sludge was a teeny tiny gerbil.

Speaker 0

池塘旁边是一位疯狂而焦急的女士。

And beside the pond was a frenzied, frantic woman.

Speaker 0

来吧,西摩。

Come on, Seymour.

Speaker 4

我不知道你怎么会陷在那个泥塘里,但我必须把你救出来。

I don't know how you got stuck in that muddy pond, but I've got to get you out.

Speaker 4

所以请别再乱动了。

So please stop squirming.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲心中涌起同情。

Alfie felt his heart go out

Speaker 5

向那位女士和西摩表示同情。

to the woman and to Seymour.

Speaker 5

女士,打扰一下。

Pardon me, ma'am.

Speaker 5

我可以试试吗

May I try

Speaker 1

把你那只仓鼠救出来?

to get your gerbil out?

Speaker 0

当然可以,我根本抓不住他。

By all means, I can't get ahold of him.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲走进泥里,抓住西摩长长的细尾巴,猛地一拉。

Alfie stepped into the mud, seized Seymour by his long thin tail, and gave it a yank.

Speaker 3

嗯。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

抓住了。

Got it.

Speaker 3

我抓住了。

I got it.

Speaker 0

他高兴地把西摩整个拉了出来。

Happily, he pulled Seymour right out.

Speaker 0

但不幸的是,他把西摩的尾巴直接扯掉了。

But unhappily, he pulled Seymour's tail right off.

Speaker 4

看看你干的好事。

Look what you've done.

Speaker 4

你把西摩的尾巴扯掉了。

You pulled off Seymour's tail.

Speaker 4

尽管沙鼠可以脱落尾巴,但它们再也长不回来了。

And even though gerbils can shed their tails, they can never grow them back.

Speaker 1

哦,非常抱歉,女士。

Oh, I'm so sorry, ma'am.

Speaker 1

这是个意外。

It it was accident.

Speaker 1

I

Speaker 2

不是故意的

didn't mean to

Speaker 4

但你确实这么做了。

But you did.

Speaker 4

你弄断了西摩的尾巴,也伤了我的心。

You broke Seymour's tail, and you broke my heart.

Speaker 4

西摩是我全世界最好的朋友,所以我要让你为你的所作所为付出代价。

Seymour is my best friend in the entire world, so I'll make you pay for what you've done.

Speaker 0

我要告你上法庭。

I am taking you to court.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲皱起了眉头。

Alfie grimaced.

Speaker 0

阿尔伯特露出了笑容。

Albert grinned.

Speaker 2

今天可不是你的幸运日,阿尔菲·贝苏普。

This is not your day, Alfie Betsoup.

Speaker 2

你现在被指控了多少项罪行?

How many crimes are you accused of now?

Speaker 2

三个?

Three?

Speaker 0

阿尔菲一言不发。

Alfie didn't say a word.

Speaker 0

他只是长叹一口气,然后跟着阿尔伯特、那位扭伤了小指的男人、那只尾巴断了的沙鼠,以及那位心碎的女人前往首都。

He just heaved a sigh, then followed Albert, the man with the sprained pinky finger, the gerbil with the broken tail, and the woman with the broken heart to the capital city.

Speaker 0

不久之后,他们走进了法院,站在法官面前。

Before long, they were filing into the courthouse and standing before the judge.

Speaker 5

大家下午好。

Good afternoon, everyone.

Speaker 5

我必须说,看到一个案件有多个原告的情况并不常见。

I must say, it's not often I see a case with multiple plaintiffs.

Speaker 5

通常,只有一人提出投诉,指望我来主持公道。

Usually, just one person is lodging a complaint and looking to me to make things right.

Speaker 5

那么,阿尔伯特,我们先从你开始。

So, Albert, let's begin with you.

Speaker 5

你对阿尔菲有什么指控?

What is your complaint against Alfie?

Speaker 0

阿尔伯特挺起了胸膛。

Albert puffed out his chest.

Speaker 2

那家伙占着我的邮筒,大人,还不肯还给我。

That rascal has my post, your honor, and he refuses to return it.

Speaker 0

法官直视着阿尔菲。

The judge locked eyes with Alfie.

Speaker 5

阿尔伯特说的属实吗,阿尔菲?

Is what Albert says true, Alfie?

Speaker 5

你不愿意把他的邮筒还回去?

You will not return his post?

Speaker 1

大人,这是真的。

It is true, your honor.

Speaker 1

但如果我还回去,我的小屋就会塌掉。

But if I do return it, my cabin will fall down.

Speaker 1

而且,阿尔伯特让我以为他是作为老朋友把邮筒给我的。

And besides, Albert led me to think he was giving it to me as an old friend.

Speaker 2

你根本不是什么老朋友。

You're not an old friend.

Speaker 2

你只是自私。

You're just selfish.

Speaker 1

自私?

Selfish?

Speaker 1

阿尔伯特,我把自己的午餐给了你,而你却把我的面包和奶酪全吃光了。

Albert, I gave you my lunch and you ate all of my bread and cheese.

Speaker 2

这和这件事有什么关系?

What does that have to do with?

Speaker 5

先生们,请安静下来。

Gentlemen, please settle down.

Speaker 5

我裁定,阿尔菲必须归还阿尔伯特的邮筒。

I hereby rule that Alfie shall return Albert's post.

Speaker 5

而阿尔伯特则应归还阿尔菲的午餐。

And Albert shall return Alfie's lunch.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲本可以说同样的话。

Alfie could have said the same thing.

Speaker 0

阿尔伯特怎么可能归还面包和奶酪呢?

How could Albert return the bread and cheese?

Speaker 0

它们早已进了他的肚子。

They were already in his belly.

Speaker 0

但在任何问题被提出之前,法官转向了那个小指扭伤的男子。

But before any questions could be asked, the judge moved on to the man with a sprained pinky.

Speaker 5

你,先生。

You, sir.

Speaker 5

你对阿尔菲有什么投诉?

What is your complaint against Alfie?

Speaker 3

嗯,当他跳进我正在无辜沐浴的河里时,他落在我身上,扭伤了我的小指。

Well, when he jumped into the river where I was innocently bathing, he landed on me and sprained my pinky finger.

Speaker 0

法官看了阿尔菲一眼。

The judge gave Alfie a look.

Speaker 5

阿尔菲,他说的是真的吗?

Is what he says true, Alfie?

Speaker 5

你跳进河里,弄伤了这位先生的粉指。

You jumped into the river and sprained this man's pinky.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yes.

Speaker 1

确实如此,法官大人。

It is true, your honor.

Speaker 5

但我跳下去是因为我无法走过那座破损的桥。

But I only jumped because I couldn't walk across the broken bridge.

Speaker 5

我站得太高了,没看见他。

And I was up so high, I didn't see him.

Speaker 5

哦,所以你现在成了受害者?

Oh, so you're the victim now?

Speaker 5

我就是那个手指受伤的人。

I'm the guy with the injured finger.

Speaker 5

求求了,别再争吵了。

Please, enough squabbling.

Speaker 5

我 hereby 判决 Alfie 必须和那个人一样,在同一条河里洗澡,然后那个人从桥上跳下,落在 Alfie 身上,弄伤 Alfie 的小指。

I hereby rule that Alfie shall bathe in the same river that the man did, then the man shall jump from the bridge, land on Alfie, and sprain Alfie's pinky finger.

Speaker 0

什么?

What?

Speaker 0

Alfie 和那个人一样困惑,但法官继续施压,把注意力转向了那位女士。

Alfie was just as confused as the man was, but the judge pressed on, shifting her focus to the woman.

Speaker 5

现在轮到我们的第三位原告了。

It's time for our third plaintiff.

Speaker 5

女士,您对 Alfie 有什么指控?

Ma'am, what is your complaint against Alfie?

Speaker 4

他扯掉了我的豚鼠的尾巴,法官大人。

He pulled off my gerbil's tail, your honor.

Speaker 4

他直接把尾巴从他身上拽了下来。

He yanked it right off his body.

Speaker 0

法官盯着阿尔菲,目光严厉。

The judge leveled her gaze on Alfie.

Speaker 5

阿尔菲,她说的是真的吗?

Alfie, is what she says true?

Speaker 5

你扯掉了她的仓鼠的尾巴。

You pulled off her gerbil's tail.

Speaker 1

是的,法官大人,确实如此。

It is true, your honor.

Speaker 1

但我只是想把他从泥泞的池塘里救出来。

But I was only trying to rescue him from the muddy pond.

Speaker 1

我很抱歉他的尾巴长不回来了,但至少他脱离了

And I'm sorry his tail won't grow back, but at least he's safe from the

Speaker 4

脱离什么?

Safe from what?

Speaker 4

从看起来像一只正常的仓鼠,拥有一条漂亮的长尾巴?

From looking like a normal gerbil and having a nice long tail?

Speaker 5

请别再打断了。

Please, enough of the interruptions.

Speaker 5

我 hereby 裁定,这位女士必须把她的仓鼠交给阿尔菲。

I hereby rule that this woman shall give Alfie her gerbil.

Speaker 5

阿尔菲必须在让仓鼠的尾巴重新长出来之前,不得归还仓鼠。

Alfie shall not return the gerbil until he has made its tail grow back.

Speaker 5

但这太荒谬了。

But that's absurd.

Speaker 5

根本不可能做到

There's no way that

Speaker 4

法院

The court

Speaker 5

已经做出裁决。

has spoken.

Speaker 5

你们有你们的命令,我希望你们遵从,否则你们会再次出现在这个法庭上。

You have your orders and I expect you to follow them, lest you wind up in this courthouse again.

Speaker 5

本案终结。

This case is closed.

Speaker 0

法官站起身来,大步走出了房间。

The judge rose to her feet and swept out of the room.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲对三位原告耸了耸肩。

Alfie gave the three plaintiffs a shrug.

Speaker 1

好吧,我想是时候开始遵从法官的命令了。

Well, I guess it's time to start following the judge's orders.

Speaker 0

他转向那位女士。

He turned to the woman.

Speaker 1

女士,你得把西摩给我。

Ma'am, you have to give me Seymour.

Speaker 1

根据法官的判决,我可以留下他,至少要等到他的尾巴长回来。

According to the judge, I get to keep him, at least until his tail grows back.

Speaker 4

但我不能把西摩给你。

But I can't give you Seymour.

Speaker 4

如果我给了你,我就再也见不到他了,因为他的尾巴永远不会长回来了。

If I do, I'll never see him again because his tail won't grow back ever.

Speaker 4

所以,与其把我的豚鼠给你,不如我把我的钱给你吧。

So how about instead of giving you my gerbil, I give you my money.

Speaker 4

给。

Here.

Speaker 0

她伸手进她的

She reached into her

Speaker 4

手提包。

purse.

Speaker 4

拿走这50枚硬币。

Take these 50 coins.

Speaker 1

哦,法官说。

Oh, the judge said.

Speaker 4

我不在乎法官说了什么。

I don't care what the judge said.

Speaker 4

整件事根本不可能。

The whole thing is impossible.

Speaker 4

所以收下钱吧,我们之间的分歧就此一笔勾销。

So take the money and we'll forget about our differences.

Speaker 0

她把硬币塞进阿尔菲的手心,然后把西摩塞进围裙口袋,飞奔着冲出了法庭。

She pressed the coins into Alfie's palm, then popped Seymour into her apron and sprinted out of the courtroom.

Speaker 0

当阿尔菲和剩下的两名原告走出法院时,那名女子已经不见了。

By the time Alfie and the two remaining plaintiffs exited the courthouse, the woman was gone.

Speaker 0

当三人来到河边时,阿尔菲领着那位小指扭伤的男子走到桥边。

When the three men came to the river, Alfie led the man with the sprained pinky to the edge of the bridge.

Speaker 1

先生您看,从这里到河面是很高的落差。

As you can see, sir, it's a long drop to the river.

Speaker 1

不过别担心,我会在水里泡着,这样您就能落在我身上,扭伤我的小指。

But don't worry, I'll be bathing in the water so that you can land on me and sprain my pinky.

Speaker 0

那人低头望去。

The man peered down.

Speaker 0

恐慌涌上他的脸。

Panic flooded his face.

Speaker 3

听我说,阿尔菲,我知道法官说了什么,但我做不到。

Look, Alfie, I know what the judge said, but I can't do it.

Speaker 3

我跳不了这座桥。

I can't jump off this bridge.

Speaker 3

我肯定会摔断另一根小指。

I'm bound to break my other pinky finger.

Speaker 3

我肯定会把什么都摔坏。

I'm bound to break everything.

Speaker 3

他伸手进兜里。

He reached into his pocket.

Speaker 3

你拿了那女人的钱,所以请收下我的吧。

You took the woman's money, so please take mine.

Speaker 3

这里有200枚硬币。

Here are 200 coins.

Speaker 3

祝你健康使用。

Use them in good health.

Speaker 0

他把钱强行塞进阿尔菲的手里,然后跑开了。

He forced the money into Alfie's hand and bolted away.

Speaker 0

阿尔伯特在这段时间里一直异常沉默,这时终于开口了。

Albert, who had been uncharacteristically quiet all this time, finally spoke up.

Speaker 2

好吧。

Okay.

Speaker 2

这太荒谬了。

This is nonsense.

Speaker 2

荒谬。

Nonsense.

Speaker 2

纯粹的荒谬。

Absolute nonsense.

Speaker 2

你犯了所有这些罪行,现在却还能因此得到报酬?

You committed all these crimes, yet now you're getting paid for them?

Speaker 2

好吧,记住我的话,阿尔弗雷德·贝特·索普。

Well, mark my words, Alfred Bet Soup.

Speaker 2

你休想从我这里拿到一分钱。

You're not getting a cent from me.

Speaker 2

你把我的职位还给我,就这么定了。

You're giving me my post, and that's that.

Speaker 2

故事到此为止。

End of story.

Speaker 0

真的吗?

Is it, though?

Speaker 0

阿尔菲耸了耸肩。

Alfie shrugged.

Speaker 1

我的意思是,法官确实命令我把你的职位还给你,但前提是你得承认你那份协议的责任。

I mean, the judge did order that I give you back your post, but only if you own up to your part of the bargain.

Speaker 2

哦,你是说我要把几个小时前吃掉的午餐还给你?

Oh, you mean I give you back the lunch I ate all those hours ago?

Speaker 2

这不可能。

That's impossible.

Speaker 1

我可不这么确定。

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲笑了。

Alfie smiled.

Speaker 1

阿尔伯特,你还记得我是怎么得到‘字母汤’这个绰号的吗?

Albert, do you remember how I got the nickname alphabet soup?

Speaker 2

当然记得,我忘不了。

Of course, I remember.

Speaker 2

是我给你起的这个绰号。

I was the one who gave it to you.

Speaker 1

没错。

Right.

Speaker 1

是你给我取的这个外号。

You were the one who gave it to me.

Speaker 1

就在学校食堂供应字母汤的那天,他抓住我的脚踝,把我倒挂起来,使劲摇晃,直到我真把午饭都吐了出来。

On the same day the school cafeteria served alphabet soup, He grabbed me by my ankles, flipped me upside down, and and shook me until I literally lost my lunch.

Speaker 1

地上到处都是小面片字母,更别提那鸡汤了。

There were little pasta letters all over the floor to say nothing of the chicken broth.

Speaker 1

那时我太害怕了,不敢反抗。

I was too afraid to push back then.

Speaker 1

但现在

But now

Speaker 0

他举起双手,晃动手指,狡黠地瞥了一眼阿尔伯特的脚踝。

He held up his hands, wiggled his fingers, and cast a mischievous glance at Albert's ankles.

Speaker 2

等等,健康宠物汤。

Hang on there, healthy pet soup.

Speaker 2

你不会把我倒挂起来摇晃吧?

You're not gonna turn me upside down and shake me, are you?

Speaker 2

我的胃很敏感。

I have a very sensitive stomach.

Speaker 2

我会把午饭都吐出来的。

I'll lose my lunch.

Speaker 2

没错。

Exactly.

Speaker 0

阿尔伯特的眼睛瞪得像两个汤碗一样大。

Albert's eyes were as wide as two soup bowls.

Speaker 2

我跟你说吧。

I'll tell you what.

Speaker 2

不如你把邮票留下,想留多久就留多久?

How about you keep the post and you hold on to it as long as you'd like?

Speaker 2

我再也不会问你关于它的事了。

I'll never ask you about it again.

Speaker 0

阿尔菲歪了歪头。

Alfie cocked his head.

Speaker 1

你还会停止欺负我吗?

Will you also stop bullying me?

Speaker 1

不再搞恶作剧了。

No more pranks.

Speaker 1

不再偷午餐了。

No more stolen lunches.

Speaker 1

不再有阿尔菲的汤了。

No more Alfie bit soup.

Speaker 0

两天内第二次,阿尔菲屏住呼吸等待阿尔伯特的回应。

For the second time in two days, Alfie held his breath awaiting Albert's response.

Speaker 0

但阿尔伯特没有抓住他的头给他一个脑瓜崩,也没有抓住他的内裤给他一个裤裆提拉,而是抓住阿尔菲的手握了握。

But instead of grabbing his head and giving him a noogie, or grabbing his underwear and giving him a wedgie, Albert grabbed Alfie's hand and gave it a shake.

Speaker 2

成交,阿尔菲,还有一个迟来已久的道歉。

You've got yourself a deal, Alfie, and a long overdue apology.

Speaker 2

朋友?

Friends?

Speaker 0

阿尔菲紧紧握了握阿尔伯特的手。

Alfie gave Albert's hand a squeeze.

Speaker 1

好的,阿尔伯特。

Okay, Albert.

Speaker 1

朋友。

Friends.

Speaker 0

于是,经过多年的嘲讽、恶作剧、把戏和捉弄,阿尔伯特不再是阿尔菲的霸凌者。

And so it was that after years of taunts and tricks, stunts and pranks, Albert was no longer Alfie's bully.

Speaker 0

相反,他成了阿尔菲的伙伴。

Instead, he was his buddy.

Speaker 0

这两个朋友从此过上了幸福的生活。

And the two friends lived happily ever after.

Speaker 0

再也找不到发胶、辣椒或香蕉蛞蝓了。

No shaving cream, hot pepper, or banana slugs to be found.

Speaker 0

现在轮到你了。

Now it's your turn.

Speaker 0

是时候制作字母汤了,不是那种要煮的,而是要手工制作的。

It's time to make alphabet soup, not the kind you cook, but the kind you craft.

Speaker 0

首先,在一张纸上画一个大碗。

First, draw a big bowl on a piece of paper.

Speaker 0

接着,再拿三张纸,在每张纸上写下字母表中的字母。

Next, get three more pieces of paper and write the letters of the alphabet on each one.

Speaker 0

确保字母分布得相对分散。

Make sure the letters are fairly spread out.

Speaker 0

请大人帮你把字母剪下来。

Ask a grown up to help you cut out your letters.

Speaker 0

然后,尽情地把字母摆进碗里,拼出单词、短语,甚至完整的句子。

From there, have fun arranging your letters in your bowl so that they spell out words, phrases, even sentences.

Speaker 0

完成后,你可以把它们粘住固定,也可以收起来,以后再拼新的单词。

When you're done, you can glue them in place or set them aside so you can craft more words later.
