Alex, like, how do you feel about being cold?
I prefer to not be
冷。
cold.
Me too.
I mean, I I can obviously handle some cold.
但是
But
对。
Yeah.
Do you throw in the extra layer?
I don't normally throw in the extra layer.
I mean, I'd say I don't like being cold, but at the same time, I also hate carrying extra stuff.
How does the Summit Series fit into this all?
Does it give you the biggest buffer you can get?
对。
Yeah.
Summit Series
Summit Series gives you the absolute best bang for the buck in terms of weight to warmth to comfort.
And it's just such an easy modular kit.
It's like you just know which layers to have and in which order.
You don't have to think about your packing that much.
对。
Mhmm.
Every mission I've done in the mountains with Tommy, I'm always wearing one layer more than him.
It's like there's always, like, one extra layer somewhere in the kit where I'm like, wow.
You're not wearing long jogs right now?
Like, really?
But, of course, he's a real mountain man that grew up in, you know, Estes Park, like, 8,000 feet.
Oh, California climber through and through.

I remember a long time ago, gabbing with a friend, we were like on a long drive or approach about what it means when you say, I'm a five twelve or a five thirteen, five fourteen climber.
And, you know, we were bored, so it's like we weren't taking this too seriously.
But we were talking about when you say that, you should sort of mean it to be that you're a well rounded climber.
Like, ideally, if you're you say you're a five twelve rock climber, you should be able to engage with all the styles like sport, cracks, slab, steep climbing, offwidth.
对。
Yeah.
You should basically be able to engage with anything that that grade throws at you.
Like, weren't saying you don't belong in that grade if you don't do all that, but it was just the sort of thing we were talking about where I don't know.
It just it just made us we were just sort of discussing how much there is to master inside of the sport of climbing.
I totally agree with that.
And actually, I remember being really focused on that same idea when I was coming up in climbing.
So I was like, what does it mean to be a five eleven climber?
Does it mean that you have to be able to climb any kind of five eleven on any kind of rock in any conditions?
对。
Yeah.
As I was growing up, that was that was super important.
And I was like, well, what does it mean to be a five twelve climber?
It's because like, I definitely can't climb some five twelves.
You know, it's like what a I I don't know.
对。
Yeah.
It's like there's definitely a lot to learn.
对。
Yeah.
There is.
And when you ask around and you think about it, one of those disciplines lags behind in competency, and there are a lot of holes in a lot of good climbers' resumes.
I mean, Offwidths, I think, are the obvious gap in most climbers.
I'm trying to think of some of my friends around Vegas who are, like, elite sport climbers, cutting edge climbers.
But I'm kinda like, could they climb a five eleven Offwidth?
And I was like, yeah, they can climb 15 b.
Can they climb five eleven if it's, you know, if it's seven inches wide?
I'm like, I'm not totally sure.
You know, it's like fifty fifty.
You're gonna like
对。
Yeah.
Competency wise, are you a a five thirteen climber if if we're using this as a standard?
I I am probably.
I mean, I well, you know, it depends.
I probably couldn't actually, probably could climb a 13 plus Offwidth in a couple tries, I bet.
对。
Yeah.
Which is probably not that dissimilar to to certain styles of sport climbing or things.
Like, yeah, I I do think that I'd I'd know how to Offwidth climb well enough now that I technically can climb hard Offwidths even though I always try my hardest to avoid them.
Did you ever actively I mean, you must have, right, to to improve because you have to engage with it all.
But But what was your process of, like, actually engaging with the Offwidths grades?
Like, did you go on a concerted effort, like, one year where you're like, I'm just gonna get better at this one year?
没有。
No.
I definitely didn't.
I intentionally sought out a few of the five eleven Offwidths in Inny Creek my first season just because I felt like, you know, to climb five eleven Offwidth, it was critical for Yosemite, and I just wanted to be able to get up walls.
But then beyond that, I've actually only sought out specific cracks because they're sort of iconic cracks.
So like belly full of bad berries, French warfare, these kind of like classic things that, you know, I'd seen pictures of growing up.
But even things like the Owl Roof in Yosemite, I think, which is like kind of this off with the little roof crack that you drive under every time you drive into the park.
And so, you know, basically, I've only chosen specific routes where I'm kind of like, well, you know, it has like a big history and you see it all the time or something like that.
But I've I have never really sought out like actual hard offwidths.
Didn't trench warfare like end end your pathway?
Like, wasn't
that like the hard stuff?
You're like, this stuff?
不。
No.
不是。
No.
It didn't didn't totally end it.
But I did think that it was gonna be a lot easier for me than it actually was.
And I was like, wow.
If this is a 12 d Offwidth, then then I should stick to five eleven.
So I was like, this is heinous.
I thought it was so hard.
But but I did eventually do it.
It's almost like Offwidth thing could be included in climbing's dark arts category, like free soloing, card aid.
Ice climbing.
Ice climbing.
没错。
There you go.
Like, it is sort of this it's sort of the set aside thing that's sort of special.
And it's weird because it's like, I think a lot of those other things are just they're that way because they're maybe a little more dangerous.
But Offwidth thing is just physical.
对。
Yeah.
It's it's physical.
It's dangerous for your physical and mental health, you know.
It's like, it just like hurts you on the inside and outside.
You're like covered in gobies and you feel like a bad climber.
It's just it it hurts your perception of who you are as a climber.
对。
Yeah.
Today, we sit down with Offwidths masters, Sam MacIlwaine and Pete Whittaker to talk about pivot points, wide ponies, and the technical mastery and endurance that goes into climbing the world's most physical crack lines.
And Pete has also actually even written the book on crack climbing, like, literally.
And with his longtime climbing partner, Tom Randall, established the world's hardest offwidth century crack outside of Moab, Utah.
They've each gone on such a journey, both mentally and physically with off whipping in a way that only a handful of other climbers ever have.
I'm Alex Arnold.
I'm Fitzgall.
这里是 Climbing Gold。
This is Climbing Gold.
So most climbers avoid offwidths as much as possible.
Why have you guys sought them out to some degree?
Because we've gotten past the vertical offwidth slog and we've gotten into the realm of like invert offwidth and, know, climbing feet first upside down is the coolest thing you could possibly do.
It is so full body, so thrilling, so exciting.
You're doing half cartwheels, you're doing flips like a 100 feet up with just air below you, and if you don't get through the vertical offwidths, you can't get the technique to do that.
But most people stop before they get there and realize how awesome it is.
Like, that is actually kinda compelling, but I'm like, I guess.
Maybe I just never made it far enough into my offwidth.
Like, I'm sort of like, okay.
Pete?
Well, what what do you think, Pete?
Well, I think when most people start offwidth ing, then they've maybe done a lot of climbing before.
They're they're a climber already.
They have now come into offwidth climbing or crack climbing.
And they are they're kind of trying to apply their normal climbing skills to crack climbing or offwidthing techniques.
So they think it's absolutely desperate, but what they haven't come to realize yet is that they actually just need they need to, like, reinvent themselves as a climber, learn that they're actually gonna be starting from a much lower level, and that if you do kind of accept that you're gonna be starting from that lower level and that you can Offwidth thing isn't as hard as people think it is because but but their mindset is wrong.
So I always think that they're they're going in with this mindset of, like, I'm a normal climber.
I climb five twelve, for example.
I should be able to climb 512 offwidth.
Whereas you should go into it as, okay, I'm a five twelve climber.
I'm I'm a five eight offwidther.
Let's go in into it with those with those kind of five eight skills.
Or a five six offwidther.
I mean, that's
Or a five six offwidther.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I And and I feel like that's where people kind of go wrong with it, then they get this really negative experience about it that they think it's really hard.
But I don't think it's necessarily any harder or easier than any other climbing.
In some ways, it's actually easier, you know?
Like, you you can't fall off.
所以
So
对。
Yeah.
So for for each of you guys, would you say the Offwidth thing, like, feels the same to you?
You know, like like, does a does a 10 d Offwidth feel as easy to use as a 10 d Handcrack at this point since you're both sort of elite Offwidthers?
We'll be back with more after the break.
Alex, you set big goals, which means you need to train.
What has been your experience with Lattice Training?
Oh, I've worked with Lattice a few times over the years.
I think the first time was during the free solo film tour because that was actually the first time that I knew that I wouldn't be climbing outside long enough.
And so I wanted a structured training plan to sort of tag me over while I was a working man, basically.
And then I've used him a few times over the years since then, then I'm actually currently just started working with Lattice again, basically just because well, I guess because I'm a working man again now, Just because I'm doing so much work and travel and things that it helps to have some structure.
Tell me about the app.
Lattice
So the Lattice app is the best app in climbing training, I guess.
I mean, it's everything that Lattice has learned over the last, I don't know, what, ten years that they've been doing it.
You basically test your own capabilities and then you tell them what apparatuses you have, like what you have available, what kind of gyms, what you can do, then the ways you build custom plans.
But it's basically everything you need out of climbing coaching in one app.

Do you feel like your kids have a breakfast window?
Like like, our kids, like, if we don't feed them between the hours of 07:30 and 08:15, it all goes they're even older too.
Like, it'll all go haywire.
I don't know.
My wife definitely feels like there's a window for the kids to eat.
I don't know.
I'd I I don't know if I totally subscribe to it, but I just let it, you know, I just let it play out.
对。
Yeah.
I was psyched to hear that Kodiak recently added homestyle waffles to their lineup.
It's all the convenience of a toaster waffle with a protein punch so our kids don't bonk.
对。
Yeah.
And these are not the frozen waffles that you grew up with.
The homestyle waffles have zero grams of added sugar and 16 grams of protein, but they still have the convenience of being ready to eat in a few minutes.
I still like to put some maple syrup on top, though, because god has some maple syrup.
Keep your wild ones going with a protein packed breakfast that will keep them fueled for big days.

Would you say the offwidth thing, like, feels the same to you?
You know, like like, does a does a 10 d offwidth feel as easy to use a 10 d handcrack at this point since you're both sort of elite offwithers?
At the highest level, does it ever start to feel like normal grades?
That's what I'm curious about.
Like, once you're really good at it, does it ever actually feel you know, like, 10 d face climbing kinda feels like 10 d crack climbing once you know how to do both at a high level.
If you're an elite Offweather, does it ever feel like 10 d or is it just kinda like doable?
So I I feel like it's different because at the when you're doing vertical offwidth, I feel like you can compare it, but then when it gets to roofs, it's much more about like the distance, the physicality, like the difficulty of the pivot.
I feel like you can't really map on Offwidth grades directly to, like, some other style, like sport climbing or, like, hand cracks or whatever, but what you can do is break it down into components and can be like, okay.
Well, how many five twelves five twelve Offwidth stack into making this?
Or, like, how many, you know, v five Offwidth boulders you do have to combine to get to this grade.
So when I think of, like, five thirteen Offwidths, which is, like, what I've mostly been doing for the last two years, I don't think of five thirteen sport climbing as, like, the match for that.
I just think of what is combined in order to, like, make those five thirteen.
So to answer your question about, like, whether it feels like normal grades, to me, Offwidth is normal.
Like, that's more normal than sport climbing because I just do those moves over and over and over.
对。
Yeah.
Honestly, I I mean, I couldn't help but laughing as you're talking because I'm like, the difficulty of the pivot.
I'm like, I've literally never even heard that.
I'm like, what is the pivot?
Like, you know, I've never or or like stacking v five offwidth roofs.
I'm like, I don't think I've ever done a v five offwidth roof.
I'm like, that sounds terrible.
I'm kinda like, oh, who wants to stack them?
Well, you've you've done bellyful.
Yeah, I've done bellyful.
Bellyful
Bellyful doesn't really have a boulder on it.
It's just it's just like Enduro, but there are lot of offwidths where the hard part is getting from being upside down to being right side up again and that's called the pivot.
And Pete actually has a really good chapter in his book about like exactly how to pivot which is where I learned from.
I was like, how do I do this?
Because all of it is like a boulder problem.
So if you are doing inward offwidth on the ground as a boulder, you're basically practicing for when you get to the end of those roofs and then you have to pivot because you're gonna have to, like, get into a right setup position and there's not necessarily gonna be a jug or a crimp or something for you to pull on.
I'm like, have I done any other invert off?
Because I've done a trench warfare, I guess.
I was just about to say actually, I don't think we can class you as not knowing what to do with Offwidths, Alex.
I I don't believe that.
Well, but I've only done a couple.
And the thing is I've only done them when I absolutely have to, you know, basically, like like I've never chosen Offwidth.
I think you are a very good Offwidth climber.
May may maybe you don't maybe you don't do them that much, but I mean, you I I feel like you know what you're doing.
But I think of Offwidths the same way I think of ice climbing or something where it's like what you do when you have to get to the top, but you always go around it if possible.
对。
Yeah.
好的。
Okay.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I'm kinda like, you never choose an Offwidth.
To be honest, I'm not like super opposed to that when it comes to vertical Offwidths because vertical Offwidth people think of as like super slow thing that you just have to struggle up.
If you have the technique, can do it pretty consistently and you can be like, every single move is like either one hand free or or both hands free.
But then when you get to the roof part, you're like, this is this is not a slog.
Like, all of that criticism towards like offwidth, I'm like, if you haven't if you haven't applied that to a roof, like, if you don't feel that in your soul about Belly Full, I feel like it's unfair to put on Offwidth roofs because they're so fun and there's so much the destination of what you're trying to get to.
Are they so fun?
对。
Yeah.
They're so fun.
But don't you wind up all super chafed and, like, dirty and discovered, you know?
It's like if you think of, like like, face climbing in seiyuze.
If you think of that as the epitome of elegance and climbing where you're, like, dangling from the tips of two fingers and, like, doing these sick moves, And then you flip over into an Offwidth roof and there's like dirt raining into your face and you're like shuffling sideways and you're like, god, my knees are bleeding.
I think my knees bleeding.
And then you're like, I think I'm stuck.
Like, isn't isn't that the opposite of like
Maybe maybe you're doing it wrong.
Maybe that's the thing.
对。
Yeah.
Or maybe.
You can do it quite clean.
Like, yeah, I mean, if you're in a if you're in sandstone, like, it's gonna get a little sandy.
You're gonna get some of that, like, hair dry shampoo from nature.
But when you're hanging upside down by your ankle and you're, fully out, like, fully resting and you feel secure and you're, this is so secure.
I could do this for a long time.
And then you you do a big sit up, you get back into it, then you drop your feet, kick all the way over, drop your hands, swing all the way over.
Like, it's it's it's just this, like, cycle and it's full body and it's not like it makes regular climbing feel like you're only experiencing it from your hands and from your feet whereas offwidth climbing, you're you're getting this like full body, you know, really immersive experience and yeah.
I mean, you do make it sound amazing and I'm like, am I just doing wrong?
Should I try again?
I'm like, yeah, that sounds super cool.
But I'm kinda like, how come I've never had that experience?
I'm up there and I'm just like, I've got sand in my eye.
This is horrible.
And then you're like, I don't I can't even carry enough gear to protect this.
You know?
Like, half the time you're like, ah, this is I don't know how many good Offwidth experiences I've ever had.
I think going back to the the point of because maybe I didn't answer this question, but is a is a ten day Offwidth the same as a attendee face climb?
You know, do do you think it's as hard and, like, is a five thirteen Offwidth the the same difficulty as a five thirteen face climbing?
I I actually think they probably are.
They're just very different because if you take I mean, if you ask Sam, for example, do you what's easier for you?
Five thirteen offwidth or a five thirteen sport route?
Right now, five thirteen offwidths is easier because I've just been really focusing on that for the last couple years.
但是
But
because she's been doing crunches nonstop.
对。
Yeah.
But have but haven't been doing your weighted hangs.
Like, my fingers feel weak, but my core
is But it's different.
Like, I feel like in sport climbing and in bouldering, there are certain moves that even if you have perfect technique, if you don't have the ability to, like, hold that crimp or, like, make that lock off physically, you're just gonna get shut down.
Whereas, offwidth, it's much more open because you have this entire, like, stretch of crack.
There's not like a a hard stop and hard end for each move.
And based on your body proportions and like what you do in fours, sizes, sixes, and sevens with your hands and then what you do in fours, sixes, and sevens with your feet, like you know what your moves are in every single size.
So when you get to that size crack, you can choreograph something unique to you, and I feel like that makes it more accessible for someone who is, like, super technique focused but maybe doesn't have that, like, incredible upper upper body strength versus something like you know five thirteen sport, five thirteen bouldering where I think you do need to hit those physical levels but maybe your technique doesn't need to be as like specific and well thought out.
So in a way you're you're really advocating for Offwidth climbing for all those people out there who just can't do a one arm on a 20 mil edge and they're kinda like, how am I ever gonna boulder hard because I just can't pull that hard on this edge?
You're like, you should offwidth climb.
Dude, I feel like my my spider sense like of the sandbag just came in here.
I was like, oh, I'm being like I totally was like, wait, wait, I know what's happening here.
不。
No.
You're like the Pied Piper of Offwidth climbing.
You're like, come try this.
It's so fun.
And the movement's amazing.
Everybody loves it.
And then you're gonna have all these people lined up in the desert being like, this is anus.
Like, my eyes hurt.
My body hurts.
I'm covered in wounds.
I just spent $2,000 on cams.
Yeah, exactly.
Like my number eight collapsed under the weight of me.
有
Have
比如像那种5.13难度的Offwidth(宽缝)之类的?
you not actually seeked anything out, Alex, other than you went and climbed bellies and trench warfare, you haven't actually kind of like, oh, I'll go and climb like a five thirteen Offwidths?
I don't think so.
And then I was attracted to like Century Crack and stuff when you guys did that.
Was like, that looks epic.
You know?
And and Sam, I do agree with you that I like the full body endurance where you're just like because I like that you never fail because you're like, oh, my foot slipped.
You know?
It's like you fail because your whole body gave out and you you like failed failed.
You know?
And I do like that, though, like, the you know, that it really rewards effort, which is actually something I like about, like, knee bar type sport climbing also, where it, like, rewards full body effort, where you're just kinda, like, crawling your way up the mountain and, like, fighting with your whole body.
Partially, I haven't had the opportunity to go back to that stuff.
You know?
Like, I haven't been back to Moab since, like, 2008 or something.
You know?
It's like none of that stuff existed.
Pinging backing off that is like, I'm curious, like, for each of you guys, like, was there a a certain route where you're like, no.
不。
No.
不。
No.
I love this.
This is like something that I really wanna pursue.
Like, was there like a light bulb moment for you with Offwidth?
Because I think a lot of us are still waiting for that.
Maybe there's hope for us.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I'm thirty years into climbing, and I'm like, when is the light bulb gonna light up?
对。
Yeah.
What route was it?
我,我
I I

think it's I'm not sure there was, like, a specific light bulb moment, but I guess my my Offwidth kind of journey just got established by accident in a way just because me and Tom were climbing a lot of new routes in Europe and like in Italy and stuff.
I I specifically remember some trips that we went on and we were just kind of stood stood in we were actually in Orco Valley, if you've heard of it where Greenspit is.
And we just kind of stood in the valley.
It was when not much stuff had actually been developed and we just like, you know, each morning look look up to the side of the hills and then see see some cracks.
And and the ones that we could see were generally Offwidths when you walked up to them.
So then we were kind of up there already, and then we were like, oh, well, we'll have to climb this now, won't we?
Because we walked all the way up there.
And then so it's kind of by accident.
It's not really like I was like, oh, yes.
I'm seeking out Offwidths because I, like, I I love the pain and all this kind of stuff, but we just kind of went up to them.
We were like, okay.
We're here.
Let's climb it.
And then and then I kind of just got into it.
You know?
And and and I am the type of climber that kind of you you know, I'm not very strong.
Like, I'm not strong as in, like, one arm pull up strength, but I'm very strong in terms of a never giving up kind of strength.
And I feel like offwidth thing, like, lends itself to that style of climbing.
So I I think my my kind of natural abilities and the point of finding these offwidths and climbing them, they kind of, like, cohesively came together without me potentially realizing.
And that's probably that's probably why.
And then, you know, when you're climbing with a partner and you just get psyched on things, so me and Tom were climbing together and you're just, like, having a good laugh.
And then, one thing rolls onto the next, and then suddenly you're just like, Oh, there's this project in America.
Let's go and try this.
Then it all just goes on from there,
really.
Sam?
I did have that lightbulb moment.
I feel like I was brought into Offwidth really quickly.
So I was a sport climber in Denver in, like, 2020.
I'd never done any kind of crack or trad climbing, and I wanted to learn.
And I signed up for this clinic by Mary Eden who's, like, my mentor, like, who who Tom is to Pete, like, to me.
And I didn't really fully process the fact that the the camp I signed up for was an Offwidth camp.
So it's three days of Offwidth in Indian Creek in Moab.
That's like a nightmare.
Who does that?
Like, were you the only person in the camp?
不是。
No.
It was booked out.
It was sold out.
I had the last spot and I only got it because someone had canceled and that's how I saw it.
What a bunch of psychos.
No.
It was crazy because like day one, she puts you on all these invert Offwidth boulders that like she and her friends have put up around Moab and so day one, you're just sticking your feet up into these cracks and trying to do a sit up and trying to move along it, and that was like my first experience of crack climbing, and I did that all day and it was so difficult.
And then day two, I went into this 150 foot squeeze chimney called The Dragon's Lair up in Long Canyon, and I was on top rope like for two hours just in this dark cave where like no one could see me, and every time I'd call take, it would I would slide down like a foot and a half, and I would be crying because I was like, I'm never gonna get out of this thing.
And when I came out, finally, my eyes were red and I was like spitting sand and I was like, that climb makes handholds and footholds look like eight, and then nothing has ever seemed like as intense as that, and after that, just got really hooked.
I don't know if it was trauma bonding or what, but after that, Offwidth climbing always felt more familiar to me than other crack styles, and so I just kept gravitating towards it.
I kept wanting to do, like, harder and harder stuff, and I was lucky to find, you know, mentors and, like, women in a group that brought me to Wyoming for three summers in a row to do Voodoo cracks, and that's where we did all, like, the Offwidth Boulders.
So I just got really hungry for it once I realized how like, you know, Pete, you were saying, it it it's a different style of climbing.
To me, it feels very cerebral.
It feels like very it, like, lends itself to someone who likes to overthink and analyze things, and, like, I'm an engineer by trade, and I wanted to, like, break everything down and really plan it out.
And I like how predictable it is too.
I like how you can really like develop your own sequence and then execute.
There's not many random things that happen in between.
So I just got obsessed from there.
对。
Yeah.
It is maybe more slow and steady than most other types of climbing just because it's like you're just you're basically no hands the whole time.
You're like, I'm chilling.
I'm chilling, but it's so hard to move, kind of.
对。
Yeah.
We always say that Offwidth thing is every move is the crooks, every move is a rest.
Like, it's it's basically what it is.
You're just rest resting and crooksing the whole time.
But but nothing's ever, like, that that difficult, but nothing's ever it's it's one of those weird weird things.
是的。
Yeah.
There there's no crazy crooks.
You you never get to the the shallow mono or something where you're like, that's a heinous move.
I just can't do the stopper crux.
Like, what are there stopper cruxes on Offwidths?
Like the pivot or something?
或者
Or
I I feel like I feel like I should take this and say yes because there are there are still things that I haven't sent.
There's still things that I'm working on.
Like, I just did The Price of Evil and I feel like the crux for that for me was the fact that you're doing such a flared chicken wing.
You have to do the sit up and you have to hold friction and it there's no like locker move like you're used to on Offwidths.
You know, you're used to be just being like, okay.
Well, in this size, I'm gonna get, this chicken wing or I'm gonna get this, you know, hand stack, and here, you're just inching up, like, you know, bit by bit with your arms.
You're burning the skin off your shoulders, and if you don't fully fully commit to that and like endure the pain, then you can't really get through it.
So it's not necessarily that there's a move that you can't do, it's there's a move that's like too painful for you to do.
Or like on something like Century Crack, it's like you're gonna burn out from foot pain before you burn out from like, you know, something else.
And so you really have to just train like the intricacies of those rests and figure out where you're sprinting, where you're really like slowing down and kinda shaking out.
So I do feel like there are still cruxes.
It's kinda like a pick your own battles thing.
Like, do you wanna do a really, really technical move?
Like, do you wanna do, like, a huge flip to get over this section, or do you wanna shuffle through it really slowly and then maintain that security?
You definitely do get cruxes on Offwidths as well, usually kind of round the lip sections of roots.
And it's usually the case of getting from well, two things, I think.
One of the things that you said, Alex, where you're you're, like, really locked inside, and then you suddenly come to a narrower section or whatever it is, and you're suddenly like, okay.
Not as much of my body is
You have to come outside.
对。
Yeah.
You have to come outside a little bit.
You're kind of still offwidth thing, but it just becomes more powerful when you're outside the crack.
So that's kind of one time there is crooks.
Then other times is where you're trying to get from, like, feet first back to hand first at, like, the pivot of at, like, the the lip of a roof or lip of a cave or something.
And it's always like going from horizontal to vertical or horizontal to just gently overhanging, which is always what generally the hardest moves, I always think.
Is is Century Crack still the hardest Offwidth in the world?
We'll be back with more after the break.
Alex, I know you're a fan of David bars.
They have two types, the gold bar and the bronze bar.
What is your go to?
Come on.
This is Climbing Gold.
It's all about the gold bar.
Dude, could it be any other way, really?
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
I mean, it has to be the gold bar, but I do actually prefer the gold bar anyway.
What's the difference between them?
The the difference is the amount of protein.
The gold bar has 28 grams of protein for 150 calories, which is the highest ratio of protein to calorie on the market.
The Bronze Bar has 20 grams of protein, 150 calories, which is still very high, but slightly less insane.
The Bronze Bar has the vibes of a candy bar, but you know it's actually good for you.
对。
Yeah.
I think which bar you choose comes down to what you're trying to achieve nutritionally.

Do you ever use caffeine as one of the things to get you through big days?
I have never really intentionally sought out caffeine necessarily, but, you know, I occasionally have it in in gels and goos and random sports products, and I'm definitely not opposed to it.
I mean, I know it helps.
对。
Mhmm.
是的。
Yeah.
LMNT's got a new flavor, lemonade iced tea.
It's got black tea extract.
The benefit is that that caffeine is more like how it is in a tea plant.
It's bundled with L theanine and polyphenol, so it creates a steadier feeling.
It's not just like that crazy caffeine hit that you sometimes get out of gels.
Actually, I have been drinking the the LMNT lemonade iced tea at the Greg and tastes good.
And I Mhmm.
Basically, I assume that caffeine must help when you're trying to send your project.
But, I mean, there is a lot of evidence in in sort of sports science that caffeine helps performance as long as you don't overdo it.
And so there's really no harm in in having caffeine Yeah.

Is is Century Crack still the hardest Offwidth in the world?
I believe so.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
What what makes that so much harder than than other Offwidths?
It's just the length.
It's the length of it.
I think it's I think it's one forty, the full horizontal length.
And then is there more as you turn around or or what's the transition at the end?
Is is there an end to it?
What do you do at the end?
It transitions, like, slowly to, a 45 degree angle, and then it goes kind of almost vertical and then it kicks back again.
So you like for me, I have to reinvert which is kinda crazy like throwing your feet back up over your head and then you have to do a setup to like get up to the top.
But for a really long time, it's just like you're shuffling.
And it's interesting because like there it's kinda like five different sections that in my mind each map on to like a different five thirteen that I've done.
Like the ending is very similar to The Price of Evil and that it is super technical, it's a bit slippery, but then you get to a certain point where you're like locked in and then the beginning, you know, it's a lot like free manliness.
There's like a really big moves, there's really like solid shuffles, and then in the middle you have that long tight painful section that reminds me of Belly Full.
And so I feel like it kinda requires like all of those skills, but at the end of the day, you're on the same tendon for a really, really long time.
So there's a lot of like pain you have to deal with.
And the only way to deal with that pain is like learning how to rest really efficiently move by move.
I thought you were gonna say Vicodin.
Oh, well, I haven't tried that.
我还以为是靠Offwidth(一种攀岩技术)呢。
I thought that was the Offwidth.
Isn't isn't that part of the Offwidth rack?
You just like dose up and just go hard.
Then you come out the end like a piece of raw meat.
You're like, I said, I love rock climbing.
And I can't feel anything.
Yeah, exactly.
The only thing I feel is alive.
是的。
Yeah.
I was thinking, you know, I'm like, I have two little kids now.
I spend way more time training in my garage.
And I was like, you know, offwidth climbing is probably the most trainable form of climbing of like any type of climbing because it's like so easy to replicate and then just like do crunches and, you know, like do hanging leg lifts and just like, you know, make a little simulate, do a stack.
Like, basically, it seems more trainable than than almost anything else in climbing.
And I have always wondered, I'm like, Oh, should I try to do some of these offwidths?
And I was like, Man, it'd be so easy to set this up in my garage and just like at the end of a normal training session, just like freaking do a couple of laps on a thing and like get my calves really pumped and like do a bunch of crunches.
You know, I'm kind of like, is is that like, is that cool?
Like, is that something I should do?
Like, is that a
I mean, I think the great thing is about Offwidth climbing and the training with it is is very different to normal climbing.
You're working different muscles.
And also the muscles that you are working, they're just really large muscle types.
So you can do so much of it and not get burnt out.
I feel like there's less chance of injury compared to or for me, I felt like that.
Maybe that's just me.
There's less chance of like a finger injury or like a tendon thing.
There's way greater chance of like, oh, my knee.
Like like, I'm bleeding.
I'm bleeding.
对。
Yeah.
Maybe.
But that's not that's not really gonna kinda stop you, think.
对。
Yeah.
Totally.
But I I yeah.
I mean, I I do I do I do think so.
I think it's I think it's kind of really convenient to just, like, set something up, and it's pretty easy.
And what I found in the past when I was doing a lot of offwidth training is I could just do my normal climbing around it because in those those two years where I was training for Offwidths a lot in that lead up to 2011 when I came to America and climbed lots of Offwidths around, I was still doing normal climbing, you know.
I was still, like, going to the gym.
I was, like, climbing out on the grid.
I was do you know, I it I guess it makes it or the the films made it look like, you know, I was just like, oh, it's down in Tom's basement and never even left there and just like, but, of course, you know, I mean, I wasn't even living near Tom at that time.
So I was I was down in the basement sometimes, but I actually had things built at home.
I just had, like, a little Offwidth box, you know, that was this big.
Like, it was probably, like, a foot long, and I would just hang in it by my feet and, like like you say, just do some crunchies, do some stacking, and then just like but then at the same time, I was just doing all my other normal climbing, you know, climbing on the grid.
I mean, you climbed on the grid is way different, you know, just standing on smears, pulling on slopers, doing all this kind of stuff.
So And so the the offwidth training, would you just do at the end of a session sort of deal or, separate days or, you know, just kind Kind of
separate days actually.
Separate.
对。
Yeah.
Because I think of it as a like, because I sometimes do, like, workout stuff, you know, kinda like, oh, like, I don't know, stuff that's not pure climbing specific and you just always do it at the end of the session or on separate days where you're just kind of like, oh, I'm doing workout stuff.
And it seems like Offwidths is like
I would split the sessions, you know?
So it would kind of be like, okay, I'm at the gym, I'm at the wall, I'm doing my normal climbing session or normal training session.
You know, I was still doing, like, normal kind of finger endurance, strength bouldering type workouts.
But then at the end of the day or when I got home or on a different day, then I'd be really, like, setting aside actual training sessions for Offwidth climbing.
Sam,
Sam, do you do you train for offwidth climbing?
Yeah.
I do.
And I've actually spent the last year and a bit training for century crack and just doing the whole garage thing, like, every every week, either three or two times a week because it actually does take a lot out of your, like, ankles.
Like, I have to be really careful not to strain or sprain my ankles.
I have to give them, like, a lot of rest after I'm doing heavy weighted sessions for a while.
And weighted sessions, you're, like, dangling from things with weights?
对。
Yeah.
Because like when when you're climbing sensory I guess
you're rack.
I claim Yeah.
I mean, I am bringing like 17 and a half pounds right now.
I think Pete probably brought like eight pounds of stuff, but I want to
17 pounds of gear?
It's a long route and it starts off the ground.
That's, like seven kilos or like eight kilos.
It is that if you want two cams between you and death on the ground, then like that's kind of what I have to bring.
If you want one cam, then you can bring like way less, but I prefer to just I feel like I can I can try harder when I feel really safe?
So like I'll I'll train like 20 pounds, and then I'm trying to push like how much I you know, how long I can go without stopping.
So I've been doing that pretty like exclusively for or not exclusively, but I've doing that pretty really consistently for the last year.
And then I'm now in my, like, season two of, training for it.
So have four months left until season two on the route.
So Alex, if you wanna catch up, if you wanna, like, you know, build that crack trainer and start training and then come out to the white rim, I'll have all the infrastructure and the gear all ready for you.
It it is slightly tempting because honestly, I I have always kinda wondered.
But so, so you have tried Sentry Crack, why, why didn't you do it in the past?
Like, what, what was the big challenge for you?
I mean, other than the fact that it's a 150 foot upside down, Offwidth and everything, like, obviously, it's hard.
But what, you know, like, what was hard for you?
Part of it was that I didn't really know what I was training for.
I had never done anything similar.
So, like, the year before, I had done my first five thirteen and I had just gotten exposure to, that level of climbing, you know, those types of pivots.
Century crack to me feels like five five thirteens kinda linked in the end, but you're carrying the whole rack and you don't have any rest and you're on the same muscles the entire time.
And so when I started training, I had five months, I went onto the crack and then I spent two months just learning it and just learning like every single move that I had to pull.
I think compared to like what I've seen from Pete and Tom's videos, I'm not shuffling the whole way, I'm doing a lot more like dynamic movement, because I can get my feet in a bit deeper.
And so I was practicing all those moves and I was also trying to translate like what I had trained which for me was a size where I could get my knees and I was resting in a particular way versus on the crack, it ended up being a bit narrower than I had trained, so I had to redo some of that movement and change like the distances that I'm stretching and exactly how I'm resting.
And I ended up getting a PR of, like, from the ground to about halfway, which for me felt like I was so gassed at the end of it.
And then after I watched Mary send it, which I actually got a really good view of because I was like right above her in the crack kind of like watching her the entire time, it felt
So you're like on the top of the rim you mean like looking through the mountain?
对。
Yeah.
I was making eye contact with her, I was trying to like project good energy and she said I looked like an insane smiling person the whole time and she's like avoiding my gaze.
But when I watched that happen, I actually realized how slow I needed to go in order to do this and actually be able to recover because Mary was going at what felt to me like an incredibly slow pace because she was resting like every single move.
She was shaking out her feet, keeping her breathing really steady, and I was like, oh, this is why I'm hitting such a wall and such a plateau that I can't overcome in like on the at the halfway point, which is still which is still like the best offwidth climbing I've I've done in my life is just like that first section of century.
But I need to go back into the crack trainer, heal from my thumb injury which I got from overuse, and then figure out how to recover and figure out how to go slower.
So like and also figure out how to do that in like different sizes and like the tight size that feels like it's right on the bone of my toe and it's so painful.
Do you know roughly how long it took Mary to climb Centricac?
How long en route?
Like, how long was she dangling?
对。
Yeah.
It was about thirty seven minutes.
好的。
Okay.
What what what would you and Tom do?
I mean, is that, like, similar experience?
Oh, yeah.
I don't know.
I guess it was around half an hour or something.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
I I can't remember though.
It was it was something like that though, would have thought.
I I think it's pretty similar for I know two other people, Danny and Humia.
是Humia吗?
Is it Humia?
Humia did eighty three minutes though.
Oh, is he eighty three minutes?
哇。
Wow.
对。
Yeah.
So what I heard from Ashley, which is God.
Who belayed him, is that he I don't know how long it took him to do the roof, but he stayed at that pod, like, at the end just holding that, like, chicken wing for, like, over an hour, and they couldn't see him, and they and he didn't see anything.
So they're just holding onto the rope being like, okay.
I guess he's still going.
And at that point, there's so much pressure because you're like, I can I can pull this night these next couple moves or I can do the entire thing again?
And he pulled it off.
But, yeah, I mean, he says eighty three minutes.
That's a long time.
I've seen people do some crazy laps on Sentry.
I've seen people do over an hour that I've been playing, but, like, still, you know, make it to that pivot, but don't don't quite get to the end.
And it's intense because like like you can go slow and try to recover that energy or you can try to try to go faster, but you have to find what works for you.
Are you psyched now, Alex?
是的。
Yeah.
It's, know I think it's like, you need to get on it.
You need to get
on it.
I I I would like to try it in my lifetime.
是的。
Yeah.
Get a get a little simulator going.
对。
Yeah.
Well, come out come out this fall.
I I'll I'll be there.
Like, I'll have the permits.
对。
Yeah.
Actually, I mean, legit question for you guys though.
I mean, it does seem like Offwidth climbing is just so much more of a hassle than the normal climbing.
In terms I mean, Fitz was kinda touching on this, but like, the approaches, the logistics, the, like, the cleaning the pitches.
I mean, particularly these long horizontal roofs, like, how do you get your gear back?
You know, like, I've done a lot of trad climbing where I just pinpoint the pitch out of laziness because you're like, who cares?
Like, cleaning it seems like more work than than leaving.
You're just like, whatever.
Know?
But then with Offwidths, you don't wanna pinpoint either because if the cam's in the way, then you're like, oh, man.
I can't get past the cam.
You know?
It's like it's just I don't know.
Like, dealing with the gear seems like much more of a hassle than in other types of climbing.
对。
Yeah.
I mean, dealing with the gear on those big roofs is kind of like it's kind of it's kind of annoying.
But, like with anything, you just get used to it, you know, and you just aid back across and stand in some slings and
对。
Yeah.
Were were you, like, reverse aiding it or something?
Or how how do you guys strip it?
对。
Yeah.
Reverse aid.
You can do the the Edward cam hands.
You know, like Edward scissor hands.
对。
Yeah.
That you do Edward cam hands, so you have the cams in your hand and but instead of stacking, you just use the cams in your hand.
It's quite a good method.
I mean, you still have to use your legs, but
I feel like we should quiz Alex on some of the terms that I've run across, like, ready for this whole thing and see how he does.
Mhmm.
好。
K.
Do you know what what's a sidewinder, Alex?
I'll start with an easy one.
I think it's a somewhat dangerous snake.
No?
Sidewinder?
What's a Sidewinder, everyone else?
It's when you are like halfway in and you're you're basically like chicken winging, you have half your body in and you're just kinda like inching up like a worm to get to get up.
Is that a technical?
I I call that a shoulder injury.
That that's how you go over your shoulder.
好的。
Okay.
That's yeah.
I've I've I've done that one and I I still have a scar on my shoulder.
It's it's fun.
Next one, wide pony.
Wide pony.
Oh, you know you know what that one is, Alex?
A wide pony?
You know what a wide pony is.
That's an American term.
That's that isn't even me and Tommy who've made that up.
I don't know.
Maybe I've done it, but I don't I don't know what the term is.
What's what's what's it?
You don't know what wide pony is?
I never heard it.
No.
Oh, you're way out the loop, aren't you?
对。
Yeah.
Well, I'm just, you know, I'm just I don't know.
I'm I was gonna joke about, like, I'm just sheltered in my little climbing niche, but I'm like, man, I climb a lot of things, but I just have never heard of a wide pony.
Wide pony is basically the technique that you do on century crack.
So, you know, where you're inverted into a roof and you have your your feet camed in how you would, sort of like how you
between it?
So it's like your legs are out and your hands are between?
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
And then hands between.
So it's a wide pony because you're riding a big horse because both your legs are spreading the roof.
对。
Yeah.
Okay.
That makes sense.
对。
Yeah.
没有。
No.
I've never done that.
That seems terrible.
You've never you've never heard of that?
I've never heard of it, but I don't think I've done that either, have I?
Not really.
I think most people or yeah.
If you don't do the wide pony technique, then they'll stack with their hands behind their legs, which
And keep their feet in front of them.
Keep their feet in front of them.
In in a roof, I mean, I think it's much harder, but some people prefer it.
Think it depends on whether you have like longer longer arms or longer legs.
Like, I have pretty long femurs and my arms aren't like they're not super short, but they're not like really long.
And so I feel like it's much harder for me to do wide pony.
Like, I prefer to stack behind me and then flip and go in front and kinda just move one leg at a time over versus shuffling in the middle because I feel like I have less mobility that way.
So it depends on your body proportions as well.
好的。
Okay.
Ready, Alex
What is Ready, Alex?
What is the private pirate?
I have no idea.
Private pirate.
I don't know.
It sounds like I mean, living in Vegas, I feel like I should know about that.
It's like some kind of, you know, burlesque show or something.
但是
But
Just a Tom and Pete thing.
Sam?
This isn't really like a classic Do you know what Private Pirate is, Sam?
Or you?
I know that it's the move you used to get out of the first Crux on Cleaver, but I don't know much beyond that.
Private Pirate。
Private Pirate.
So this is actually where you
Use are the peg leg?
对。
Yes.
You're on it, Alex.
You you can the peg leg or something?
Or you post off a leg?
Use the peg leg.
对。
Right.
So you you know when you have like a you're in a roof offwidth and it's reasonably wide, you're like up to your like inverted up to your hips or whatever.
So you're not really in like wide pony, but you're like hips.
You can't get your whole body in.
So you're on the thighs.
But there's also like a back wall
to It's like you're falling out of a squeeze chimney basically.
Like if it's upside down.
对。
Yeah.
It's like half your body's in a squeeze chimney and you're falling out.
是的。
Yep.
Pretty much.
It's like size size six size.
But then you you have like a palming hand with the with the back hand.
So like you can palm on the wall behind you.
Like, if there's a if there's a if there's a wall here and there's a crack
So it's not a splitter.
对。
Yeah.
I see what you're saying.
Not a complete splitter.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
It's like an offset to the crack, so your arse is going to the offset.
You can palm on the offset behind you, then you can use your leading hand as like a a pirate Yeah.
Pirate hook.
对。
Yeah.
好的。
Okay.
And then your your front leg is like a peg leg, and you're, like, pushing that in front of you.
So that's a private pirate.
对。
Yeah.
I I understand what you're describing, but I truly hope that I never have to do that.
So I'm like, that seems like like something has gone horribly wrong if I'm doing that.
这其实
It's a
good it's it's a good technique though.
You can, like, you can do reverse private pirate as well where you lean back over and palm with your hand your your your leading hand behind you.
It's actually that's actually a really good technique as well.
I think I think with all I think with all these names well, for me and Tom anyway, when we were doing Offwidths a lot in the past together, we were we were trying things out on routes and we're coming up with different sequences, but they were sequences and potentially moves that we you don't really kind of talk about in normal climbing sense.
Like in normal climbing terms, we have, you know, like, grab the crimp with your right hand and do a drop knee off the high right foot and then go to a gaston.
And we have all these words and to us climbers, they're just normal words.
But when we were Offwidth thing, we didn't have these terms to go by.
Well, me and Tom didn't.
Or we didn't know any.
So we just started making them up so we could, in our stupid way, just came up with stupid things that were linked.
And then you wrote the book, so now you've codified your weird terms.
You're like, now now a more generation of Offwidth climbers are gonna grow up being like, this is the gospel.
对。
Yeah.
现在它
Now it's
in now it's in the book.
Is it?
对。
Yeah.
Are all the terms are all the terms in the book that you
They're in the book.
对。
Yeah.
