Alex, like, how do you feel about being cold?
I prefer to not be cold.
Me too.
I mean, I I can obviously handle some cold.
但是
But
Yeah.
Do you throw in the extra layer?
I don't normally throw in the extra layer.
I mean, I'd say I don't like being cold, at the same time, I also hate carrying extra stuff.
How does the Summit Series fit into this all?
Does it give you the biggest buffer you can get?
是的。
Yeah.
Summit Series
Summit Series gives you the absolute best bang for the buck in terms of weight to warmth to comfort.
And it's just such an easy modular kit.
It's like you just know which layers to have and in which order.
You don't have to think about your packing that much.
是的。
Mhmm.
Every mission I've done in the mountains with Tommy, I'm always wearing one layer more than him.
It's like there's always like one extra layer somewhere in the kit where I'm like, wow, you're not wearing long johns right now?
Like, really?
But, of course, he's a real mountain man that grew
up in, you know, fastest park, like, 8,000 feet.
Oh, California climber through and through.

Alex, you know that climbing gold turned five earlier this year.
We've been doing this for a hot second.
That is hard to believe.
It's hard to believe
that it's in five years.
Kinda like it's disappeared in a blur of of raising two little kids and and talking to other you know, I can't help but feel like every time we do climbing gold episodes, I'm like, I'm just talking to other folks who are climbing how I should be climbing.
But instead, I'm at home with my kids.
I think you're doing pretty good, dude.
It's it's I I try my best, don't you?
对。
Yeah.
We've actually been working on the show even longer than five years.
I think it's like, if we go back, it's like six and a half or something crazy like that.
And I have this really clear memory of a conversation we had early on where we were figuring out what to cover in our first season, and we were talking about climbing gyms and just like how their influence on the sport and how as they kind of move out of the industrial areas, suburbs, and then into like the city centers, that that was really gonna change the talent pool for the sport.
And you share this memory of walking into a New York City gym and watching a young climber just absolutely like bearing down on these pinches, and, you know, you said you told me you're like jaw dropped.
And you had this point that basically it was something to the effect of the numbers suggest that the person who alters our sport in the next generation isn't gonna come from the climbing family where they're climbing outside all the time or from Boulder where they have really good coaching.
It's just gonna come from the big cities because the numbers just make sense.
How do you feel about your take now?
对。
Yeah.
I think I think we're kinda seeing that play out to some extent.
I mean, I think all those trends have certainly accelerated in the five or six years since since we started doing Climate Gold.
I don't know.
I mean, you know, Japan's a good example where where you've put tons and tons of gyms spread all over an insanely densely populated island, and then you just identify down.
Like I mean, it's kind of like a soccer or basketball or other sports that are sort of ubiquitous.
It's like when enough people get to try it, then the talent rises to the top.
对。
Mhmm.
And today's guest might be the greatest example of this theory that we've really seen so far.
是的。
Yeah.
I was like, is he?
I mean, yeah, maybe.
I mean, New York City family doesn't climb, just went into the gym and freaking sent the Nar.
So, yeah, we're talking about Will Moss who sort of appeared on the radar a few years ago when he climbed the best things in life are free in the gunks, which is a 14 d r, which for a teenager coming from New York City to climb 14 d r on gear is just, yeah.
It's just a totally different different thing.
对。
Yeah.
It definitely felt like an anomaly.
Like, where you're like, what?
Like, where did that come from?
Yeah.
没错。
For sure.
But of course, like for Will, it wasn't an anomaly.
Like, it was part of an ongoing process.
He'd already established 14 c gear line on the same wall.
He'd flashed five fourteen.
And generally, he just had quietly crushed through his teenage years while he was going to high school in New York City.
Since then, it's become clear that Will Moss is capable of resetting what's possible.
He became the first person to flash El Cap in a day via freerider.
He capped off his last break from school by free climbing the nose in a day, putting him amongst a very elite list, Lynn Hill, Tommy Caldwell, and Connor Harrison.
对。
Yeah.
It's crazy because you list all that, yet he still kind of flies under the radar so far.
You know, it's like I mean, I suppose because he's a he was a teen from New York City and now he's a a kid going to college in Boulder.
You know, so he's basically just barely entering, the phase of his climbing where he's able to really show what he's capable of.
对。
Mhmm.
And I think what's really impressive about Will is that he's still learning sort of basic big walling technique in a lot of ways despite the fact that he's Frito Cap in a day via two different routes.
He's still sort of learning the techniques the same that any of us did when we learned how to climb El Cap for the first time.
And so I think over the next few years as he really masters his strategy a little bit, we'll really see incredible things.
I'm Alex Arnold.
I'm Fitzgall.
This is Climbing Gold.
I'm Will Moss.
I am a semi professional climber, also a college student who loves climbing all sorts of things, but my favorite form of climbing is big wall climbing, and that's what I've been most psyched on recently.
不错。
Nice.
What what are you studying?
I'm studying mechanical engineering.
At at CU?
At CU.
对。
Yeah.
不错。
Cool.
Are you how how much more do you have?
Good a good amount.
I'm a Alright.
First semester junior right now because I took the fall off.
Is that because you've been you've been rock climbing too much?
是的。
Yeah.
Well, I mean, haven't failed any classes, but I definitely don't have a four o like Connor.
I started as a physics major and then switched to mechanical engineering, so I think I could get it done with, like, the same amount of semesters plus maybe some summer single classes.
I'm planning on continuing to take the fall off because it's super fun to climb in the valley in the fall.
So that put me at, like, another four years or I guess this would be another three years.
Dude, another three years spending this Yeah.
Has honestly, that's kind of
a Yeah.
Good lifestyle that we spend
when you spend the season in the valley and then go to school for a bit and, like, train in the gym and then I mean, that's not a bad way to live.
You're gonna be a 32 year old undergrad who, has free climbed El Cap 15 times and, you know, like like freaking sent everything on the West every hard every five fourteen trad route on the West Coast, you'll be like, woah.
I'm gonna finish my undergrad sometime in my mid thirties.
Something like that.
That's cool.
I mean, know, at least you're doing it.
You said that you're drawn to big wall climbing.
Talk about that.
Like, what's what's your climbing background?
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, I grew up in New York City.
I started climbing at the age of 10.
This, like, gym.
Which gym in New York?
It used to be called steep rock bouldering when I was climbing there, but it's now bought out by Vital.
So it's, like, Vital Upper East Side.
But it's, like, a super small gym.
It was, like, a block from my home, and I would train there and climb there all the time.
And pretty soon, I was, like, started getting psyched on competition climbing.
And then once COVID came around, I basically started climbing in the gunks.
My friend, Carter, like, taught me how to trad climb, and I climbed in the gunks for a bunch.
And I was like, this is so fun.
Like, this is the most fun form of climbing I've done.
This is so much cooler than comps.
And, yeah, I was, like, basically really psyched on trad climbing.
And after seeing all the, like, Yosemite films, I had always been like, wow.
That's, like, so cool.
Like, I wanted to go climb big walls one day.
And then now recently, I've, like, gotten into big wall climbing and been pretty psyched on that.
And what happened to competition climbing?
What happened to indoor climbing?
You know, basically, like, has it been a steady progression from growing up in the gym to climbing bigger walls outside?
Or do you still, you know, climb the gym a lot and train and, you know, do you still are you spiring to the Olympics?
You know, like, what's where have you gone in climbing?
是的。
Yeah.
I think I've given up on my Olympic dreams because I've just mostly psyched on outdoor climbing right now, but I still train in the gym all the time.
I mean, right now, I'm Boulder.
I'm basically just, yeah, climbing in the gym and sometimes, like, just scrambling easy things nearby.
But, yeah, mostly just gym training for the valley season.
Every once in while, I'll get out on, like, a vertical granite day to prepare for big walls, but pretty much I'm training for El Cap on a 50 degree kilter board.
Dude, I I actually did that all last season and then I showed up first first day of the season.
I'd like I'd only been kiltering at, like, 60, like, literally just like steep jugs.
And then I showed up in the valley and did a what's the thing?
Middle的《Daddy Issues》。
Daddy Issues on middle.
You know, like
the Oh, nice.
Have you done that thing?
Have you done Father Time?
没有。
No.
I haven't done either of those.
Father Time is freaking awesome.
It's so good.
I did the second to Son of Father Time and I'd remembered it as like, oh, it's pretty chill.
And then showing up after having only killed her at 60 for the whole season
是的。
Yeah.
Going up all the slabs at the bottom, I was like, oh my god, these slabs are kinda hard and kinda scary.
And I was like, it just I hadn't stood on my feet in so long.
I was like, oh, this is kinda messed up.
And then I was like, this is kinda not the best way to train for the valley actually.
不过。
But
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, most people a lot of people make fun of me when I'm talking about doing that.
But the theory that I have is that I wanna get my bouldering strength as high as I can before I enter the valley if I'm like there for a longer trip because I'll enter the trip with super high bouldering strength.
And you steadily lose it over the whole season.
对。
Yeah.
You steadily lose it over the trip, but as you're losing it, your granite technique is higher.
So I kinda want them to like both meet at a point that's like pretty cool and I can sense something hard.
Dude, I I I actually I I totally validate that opinion.
I I totally agree with you.
I did that for all my Valley seasons too, where you sort of, like, you come in at peak fitness and then you know that your fitness is gonna decline, but your experience on the route or your strategy, you know, basically all your, tactics will improve as you go.
对。
Yeah.
And ideally, you know, ideally, they cross at the right point and you freaking send something rad before you're like, you have to nail your timing.
I did a little different training for Free Rider because I was going to get on Free Rider.
The plan was to pretty much get on it first day because I was out of school first week of May, I wanted super good temps to be able to do this thing in a day, having to climb in the sun and whatever.
And so for that, actually went and got on a bunch of vertical granite walls in Boulder Canyon and just nearby places in Colorado.
I'm super lucky to be in Colorado.
There's tons of vertical granite unlike that in New York that I could just train on.
So that was super helpful for that trip because I was trying to get on the objective, like, first thing.
对。
Mhmm.
But before my fall season, I knew I was just gonna, like, work the nose a bit and then get on it after.
So I was, like, kind of just trying to be gym strong before that.
I mean, so actually so, I mean, so notably, you flashed Free Rider in a day, which is the first time that anybody's done that.
Right?
I mean, yeah.
Free Rider
I mean, I guess Free Rider has been flashed kind of in different ways, but nobody's just nobody's ever just walked up and climbed El Cap in a day with no falls.
Right?
没错。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
So that's cool.
So your partner though, I mean, you guys went up there as if you were gonna go wall style.
Right?
And then and then you made it up, you know, a third of the way up the wall and you're like, you know what?
Let's just go for it.
And you repacked the bags and then just went for it.
I mean, is that is that really what happened?
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, so that's pretty much what happened.
I think that I always had the idea in the back of my head of, like, I wanna go for it in a day because yeah.
I mean, it just seemed cooler.
It seemed like a step up.
And when I, like, went to Josh Horton's garage and I ran, like, seven laps in a row on his little replica, he was the first one to actually
He's got he's got a replica in the garage?
对。
Yeah.
You haven't seen this thing?
没有。
No.
It's really funny.
There's, a video of it.
It's it's pretty good.
It's, like, honestly, like, I thought it was pretty soft compared to the real thing, but that might have been just the fact that I had been climbing for 2,000 feet before I entered the real thing, and I had been done a little hangboard warm up before I hopped on his.
But the general consensus about his replica is that the hands are slightly worse and the feet are slightly better.
But the feet being slightly better, like, on the bump move, I could just, like, easily reach it back and forth, like, no problem.
Whereas on the real thing, like, the bump felt like the crux.
The bump, like, out left hand to the pinch thing?
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
Exactly.
Like, where you do the thumb match.
是的。
Yeah.
Prepared to do it wall style sort of with the idea in the back of my head that like maybe I'd go for it in a day.
So me and a friend like pre hauled to heart and yeah, had it all ready for a three day mission and then
Oh, so you were climbing like in a day style, like you basically free climbed the free blast quickly, you made it to your bags at the Hart Ledge and you were like, let's just keep going without the bags.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah, that that makes sense actually.
But like previously, we had like Jumar'd up to Hart, Although, I didn't do the last Jumar, so I'd never stepped on heart if that would have blown my flash go.
Heart.
The the last 18 feet or whatever between where the one line ends and the actual heart ledge, you're like, whatever.
I think that's Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
I was like, Steve can Jumar that.
I'll use this as an excuse instead of just me not wanting to do more 20 more feet.
对。
Yeah.
Because you don't you don't wanna haul 20 more feet of bags.
You're like, I'm over it.
I'm going down.
对。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
But, we pre hauled and then, like, we got down.
There's, like, one day where it was gonna be perfect temps, and we were like, oh, we could go for it, but it's gonna rain, like, two days after.
So if I did end up, like, needing to take three days, like, I'd be forced to get off of this wall in two days, and that seemed scary because I had, like at that point, I had literally never climbed to the top of El Cap before.
对。
Yeah.
So the idea being stuck in a storm on El Cap seemed kind of daunting.
是的。
Yeah.
It seemed a little a little intimidating.
So when you did the free rider in day, mean, I heard you're placing a couple pieces per pitch.
You're just kinda like punching it.
Is that like the standard standard strategy?
I mean, what I don't know.
Like, yeah, to what extent are you punching it?
We'll be back with more after the break.
好的。
Okay.
So maybe break it down.
In a typical week, like, how often are you using fingerboards for training?
So when I lived in my van, I was using the Beastmaker every other day, actually.
Like, during the whole lead up to Free Soling El Cap, like, during the film, I was hangboarding basically every other day doing these kind of repeater workouts on the Beastmaker.
Now I basically use the hangboard twice a week when I do gym sessions at the house.
And I pretty much always use the board as part of my warm ups, just dangling from my fingers a little bit to warm up.
And then I often do some kind of actual workout with the hangboards, you know, as part of my session.
And you know what?
Honestly, my fingers are way stronger than they were before.
I'm way more comfortable on a half crimp.
That used to be the very worst thing for me.
And now after years of consistent hangboarding, I'm like, you know what?
A half crimp is basically as strong as any other grip for me.
没错。
Yeah.
Recently, Beastmaker switched from using poplar, the wood, which was sourced in The US, to using sustainably grown beech, which they can source in The EU.
And since Beastmaker is based in The United Kingdom, that reduces their carbon footprint.
And beach is more dense than poplar, it can stand up better to heavy use, but it still has that great grippy texture for training.

Alex, is granola what you eat for breakfast, a snack, or a topping?
Which one is it?
It's more of what I eat for breakfast.
Basically, like, cereal in the morning, add a bunch of wholesome fixings and and do, you know, some, like, almond coconut milk type stuff.
Actually, that's what I have for breakfast this morning.
Yeah.
I eat it for breakfast, and I definitely see our kids make a bowl of yogurt and granola after school, which is, like, a lifesaver because, you our eldest is, like, has the hollow legs from teenage years.
Just like, I'm always hungry.
没错。
Yeah.
Everyone knows Kodiak for their pancakes, but they've recently launched a line of granola.
It comes in five flavors, including chocolate.
It's it's made with a 100% whole grains, 16 plus grams of protein, and quality ingredients like coconut oil to make you feel fuller for longer.

So when you did the free runner today, I mean, I heard you're placing a couple pieces per pitch.
You're just kinda like punching it.
Is that like the standard standard strategy?
I mean, what I don't know.
Like, yeah, to what extent are you are you punching it?
对。
Yeah.
I mean, for a lot of it, I just, like, wouldn't see him for a while because we just we definitely had some time crunches.
Like, it ended up being twenty two hours, but there were, like, times in there where we were trying to move fast.
On on the free rider in a day?
对。
Yeah.
Free rider in day, I think it was, like, twenty two sixteen.
Were you doing were you doing any tactics?
Were you, like, saddle climbing, short fixing, like, doing any of the the speed tactics?
I was doing a bunch of short fixing.
And it took twenty two hours with short fixing?
Was your partner, like, a very slow jogger?
He wasn't no.
He he was, like, decently fast, but he had a big pack because we were, like, definitely prepared for the full twenty four.
But we took, like, a lot of naps.
You took naps?
是的。
Yeah.
We took naps for sure.
Where?
Like, every ledge?
At the alcove, we took, like, a six hour nap.
Dude, you took a six hour nap and a twenty two hour nap?
是的。
Yeah.
没错。
Much.

Because, like
Why?
For attempts?
Well, yeah, for attempts.
Like, basically, it was hard to understand how to do free rider in a day, like, in the twenty four hour time because everyone who I've talked to about it is like, yeah, like, you know, you start at midnight, and then you just do the free blast in the dark, and then you get to the bowler problem.
And I'm like, the free blast in the dark, like, on sighting?
Like, that sounds heinous.
I don't wanna do that.
是的。
Yeah.
That's that's tough.
对。
Yeah.
So, basically, what we ended up deciding is we're like, okay.
We're gonna, like, try and start at, like, 4AM, get to the base of the crux slab pitch at sunrise.
But then everything's always slower than you think.
And we got to the base, like, at sunrise.
And, yeah, I, like, climbed to the base of the crux pitch and then, yeah.
Then I did the crux slab pitch.
Which how how'd how'd that feel for you?
It felt it felt pretty cool.
I was, like, able to do some, like, reach through thing through the crux that didn't feel too bad.
Like, everyone talks about standing on that, like, one tiny credit card, but I was able to get, like, a good smear on the right foot and, like, some left foot cramp and just, like, reach kind of past the crux because I'm, like six two with a six five wingspan.
是的。
Yeah.
Okay.
That's pretty tall.
是的
Yeah.
Interesting.
Is it is that the the upper crux of the pitch that you're talking about?
是的
Yeah.
That's the upper crux.
Because what I what I always thought of as the crux is the part below that where you do the like step like when you move right.
Oh, Okay.
对。
Yeah.
I was actually able to reach that pretty well too.
I, like, had some decent foot, and I just, like, reached way over to this crimp.
Oh, I could see that.
对。
Yeah.
Because normally, you, like, match your feet and you have to, like, step over.
But if you just lean far enough and grab the hold, I guess that would be okay.
是的。
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
And then, like, with a gym climbing background, I'm like, 20 millimeter crimp.
Let's go.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
Totally.
你得用
You're gonna
one arm this edge on the slab.
对。
Yeah.
That's you treat it on the kilter board, baby.
没错。
Yeah.
Exactly.
And then just, like, mantle it.
You're, like, standing on it.
But, yeah, like, it it was not too bad when I took my time on it.
And then I've gone back there a couple times, and I've, like, never fell.
But for some I, like, wasn't able to, like, totally recreate my beta some of those times.
Like, one time I ended up just standing up on the credit card, like, leader up soloing.
对。
Yeah.
So after that, that felt pretty good.
I was, like, psyched to get through the crux slab, and then I started doing some short fixing after that.
But we were still moving, like, pretty slow somewhat, and I, like, down climbed to heart.
And I was, like, down climbing to Hart, and there's, like, some dude setting up this line, like, from the right side of Hart to, like, the left side.
And I was like, what's going on?
There's, like, this dude.
He's like, there's a drag queen on that ledge.
And I was like, what?
And he was like, we're putting up a trans flag.
It was like, did you see that trans flag thing?
I I read something about that.
对。
Yeah.
That was the day of my flash go and
there's like Okay.
So they were like rigging a giant flag across Hart while you were climbing through?
对。
Yeah.
And I also had, like, down climbed to Hart.
And then, like, I got there with Stuart Hart, and we were like, oh, like, should we go for it in a day?
Like, I don't know what to do.
And, yeah, we, like, got there, and there was kind of a junk show going on.
And then we were, like, looking at our haul bags that had been left there for, like, supposed to be, like, two days.
But then after we did the nose and took four rest days, it
是的。
Yeah.
And rested.
是的。
Yeah.
It's been a been a while.
I had, like, some cheese that was expired and some coconut water that ended up turning into alcohol, basically, because it, like, fermented.
And I was like, god.
Like, I don't even know if we can do this in three days.
Like, a lot of our calories are gone, and we, like, straight up don't have enough water.
Like, a gallon of coconut water, like, fermented.
And luckily, it was in this, like, expandable, like, plastic blubber so it could, like, expand and not break.
But, like, I opened it, and it was, like, the worst smell ever.
And I was like, goddamn.
Like, what is going on?
What are we doing?
You know, looking at that moment, I was like, that's gonna be the decision moment.
Like, that's pretty stressful.
And then we got there, and we had to, like, figure it all out.
And then we were just both like, I think we I can do this in a day.
Like, let's just do it and go for it.
And so we just threw everything unnecessary in the haul bag, took everything necessary, like the extra snacks with us.
And then from there, we, like, got pretty quick to the Monster.
Like I short fixed from the top of the Hollow Flake to the base of the Monster Yep.
Really quickly because I was like saw it in the sun.
And I'm like, oh, I don't want it to warm up too much.
Like, I'm not that good at off with climbing.
是的。
Yeah.
I got there and the Monster didn't feel too bad.
It was pretty chill.
And so that was really great.
And, yeah, we, like, got to the alcove.
Then we got there and there were these two guys there trying to climb Golden Gate, and they went down to do the Monster.
And they had these, like, g what is it?
The g seven inflatable porta ledges?
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
Those little air mattresses.
They had those and they're like, you can just sleep on them if you want.
And I was like, oh, that's 6.
That's how you took a six hour nap because somebody left you a bed.
You're like, alright.
We'll use that.
没错。
Exactly.
Someone left us a g seven.
是的。
Yeah.
And we were like, just waiting for the boulder problem to get in the sun.
Like, we got to the alcove in eight hours, which like isn't too terrible for the first time ever being up there.
是的。
Yeah.
And for the first time,
that that's great.
Wanted to wait for the boulder problem to fully go in the shade.
So we just like chilled at the alcove and
So then you were planning on doing the whole top in the dark basically?
Pretty much.
I kind of had the hope of getting to the Enduro Corner in the light, but that did not happen.
是的。
Yeah.
That's that's Yeah.
That's never gonna happen.
If you're trying to do the The boulder problem
with sunset.
对。
Yeah.
I'm I'm still hung up on the fact that basically this historic first flash of the freerider in a day happened because of basically poor big wall planning where your bags are shot, your food's expired, you don't know what to do and you're like, screw it, let's just go to the top.
I was sorta like, funny because in the news you read about that type of stuff and you're like, Oh, that's badass.
Like that person must have had a plan.
And now hearing about it, I'm like, that's not a fricking plan.
That's just like a total botch that worked out great.
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, I think beforehand I honestly was leaning towards doing it in a day because I think
对。
Yeah.
Obviously, that's the dream.
I mean, because that's way cooler.
It's like, that's the aspiration.
I don't know.
It's honestly, like, weird because I feel like sometimes I perform better under lower pressure.
And I thought that if I was going for it in a day, it would actually be lower pressure because if I failed to do it in a day flash, but I still did it, like, whatever, second go at the boulder problem and sent El Cap ground up in a day, like
That's still sick.
是的。
Yeah.
That's amazing.
But if I, like, didn't do it, if I didn't flash over three days and then I was just, the eight hundred millionth person to free climb freerider and over a three day period, I'd be like, god, like, who cares?
You know?
So it was kinda like in my head, like, yeah, it would be lower pressure to do it in a day, and honestly, I sometimes perform better under lower pressure.
That's interesting.
That's a that's a funny way to think about it.
But then there's like bad parts to both sides.
It's like, God, like if I went for it in three days and it felt super easy, I'd be like, what am I doing?
Or if I had went for it in a day and I was like, God, I easily could have done that in three days, it'd be like, what am I doing?
所以……
So
I mean, it I think in in general, you just always default to the RATR thing.
You know?
You're kinda like, well, like, why not do it the cool way if you can?
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, this was a hard decision because, like, you don't have that many good flash goes at El Cap routes.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
I mean, overall, was just a hard decision, you know, on Free Rider.
It's, like, the easiest, most obvious El Cap flash route.
Like, El Cap hasn't been flashed in a day.
It's only ever been flashed purely one time by Babsy.
And, yeah, it was just definitely a hard decision because you only get one flash go.

Do you ever use caffeine as one of the things to get you through big days?
I have never really intentionally sought out caffeine necessarily, but, you know, I occasionally have it in in gels and goos and random sports products, and I'm definitely not opposed to it.
I mean, I know it helps.
是的。
Mhmm.
对。
Yeah.
LMNT's got a new flavor, lemonade iced tea.
It's got black tea extract.
The benefit is that that caffeine is more like how it is in a tea plant.
It's bundled with L theanine and polyphenol, so it creates a steadier feeling.
It's not just like that crazy caffeine hit that you sometimes get out of gels.
Actually, I have been drinking the the LMNT lemonade iced tea at the Crag and tastes good and I Mhmm.
Basically, assume that caffeine must help when you're trying to send your project.
But I mean, there is a lot of evidence in in sort of sports science that caffeine helps performance as long as you don't overdo it.
And so there's really no harm in in having caffeine, you know, during exercise.

As a parent, you know that feeling of, like, opening up the fridge and be like, what the hell am I gonna feed my family or myself for that matter?
Thankfully, our our infants just don't eat anyway, so you're kinda like, whatever.
对。
Yeah.
If I could just skip eating for the rest of my life, I definitely would.
Enter Factor meals.
It's like a good way to eat smarter with tasty chef prep meals that are dietitian approved and delivered right to the door.
That's exactly what I want in the world.
You know, I think there are certain times of the day where I'm just much more likely to randomly eat snacks, and I'm probably better off eating a well balanced meal, but I'm just realistically not gonna cook one for myself.
And so I think that that's where where factors can really come in is is helping me sort of stick to the plan in the middle of the day.
没错。
Yeah.

What did it feel like when you start the Boulder Prom?
That was, like, the greatest moment.
是的。
Yeah.
So after our six hour nap, we, like, headed up the wall, got to the base of the boulder problem, and then I was, like, there.
Stu
And Stu was, alright.
Like, it's gonna be sick either way.
Like, you're gonna do a ground up in a day.
The only question is whether you flash.
And then I, like, left my phone on this ledge, like, where Stu was.
I'm like, the phone is too heavy.
Like, I'm putting it on the ledge, like, playing music at max volume.
And he was like, that's just there on this ledge.
I'm like, yeah.
Can you grab it after the fact?
He's like, alright.
Sure.
Hopefully, it doesn't fall off.
And we, like, left it there playing music.
And, yeah, I, like, got up to the base of the crux.
I was kinda able to skip that first crux pretty well by just, like, reaching to the high left side pole and that, like, knob on the face.
是的。
Yeah.
Classic.
Dude, being a tall man really makes a difference on El Cap.
It really did on Free Rider.
没错。
Yeah.
Like and then, like Uh-huh.
On the boulder problem itself too, like
Dude, think about freaking Babsy.
She's like a foot smaller than you for sure.
Yeah.
Oh my god.
Her doing the boulder problem looks so insane.
She, like, let go of the undercling as she stuck the karate kick.
I was like, what?
That is not supposed to happen.
And I think they, like, didn't watch very many beta videos because, I mean, Yakapo, like, didn't see the Undercling.
But I had, like, watched so many beta videos.
I had a folder on my phone called El Cap, and I had all the freerider beta videos.
And I was, like, watching them while I was waiting for Sue to Jumar.
But, yeah, basically, like, we started playing music, and then I, like, head up that pitch, got to the base of the crocs.
I, like, kinda tried to reach for that one, like, first crimp, but, like, it felt weird and hard to commit.
So I, like, came back down to that, like, good rest.
And then, basically, I was, like, able to reach it pretty well off of just that, like, left round smear.
So, like, I didn't really have to, like, commit to, like, standing up on the right foot as much to, like, get to that first crimp.
But then I, like, got that, got my feet up, and, like, clipped that bolt that's right there.
And then the most insecure part is I was, like, ready to, like, bump, but that felt weird.
And so I, like, readjusted the right hand crimp and then, like, really went out and bumped.
And I was, like, kinda falling away from the wall, like, as I hit it.
And then I, like, stuck it, and I was like, oh, no way.
And then, like, got my feet in, like, got into the bread loaf hold, and then the karate kick for me felt, like, super chill because I could just, like like, I didn't even really have to kick.
I just like Yeah.
You just stepped over.
对。
Yeah.
But then I like reached over and mantled.
And I remember before that pitch, we were like, alright.
There's a lot of hard climbing ahead.
Like, no need to celebrate if we do this.
Like, there's so much more.
But right when I like got up on top of that thing right after the bowler, I was just screaming at the top of my lungs, like, so psyched.
And Stu was screaming at the belay, and my friend was, like, watching from the valley with binoculars, and I could hear him screaming.
And then, like, I got to the belay, like, short faked Stu, like, caught my friend who was watching.
He's like, dude, did it.
The karate kick didn't even look that far for you.
是的。
Yeah.
After that, we were like, okay.
Now we have a lot more, and I ended up climbing through the Enduro Corner and the round table through the night.
Did you feel any pressure at that point?
I mean, you know, like once you do the hard part, you're either like, this is great.
I'm just cruising to the top or you're like, oh god, now I better not botch any of this easy stuff in the dark when you're like onsiding like because it's still like kinda tricky.
It's like definitely not easy from there to the top.
没有。
No.
Like, it was a little tricky, and I think, like, the closest moment from there to the top was, like, the first pitch of the Enduro corner.
Like Yeah.
It's heinous.
It was, like, I didn't have my headlamp on full blast.
Like, there's three settings of it, I would always climb a pitch and then, like, turn it off to my lowest setting when I'm just hanging at the blade to not, like, waste battery.
But then I forgot to turn it up to the highest setting when I started climbing.
So I was like, god.
I feel like I'm not seeing anything that well.
Like, where are my feet?
And I was like in this weird three-dimensional corner.
And I was like, what is happening right now?
And that just felt super weird.
There were like some like really slopey locks that I was like, are people like locking on this?
Like, this doesn't make any sense.
And so was it was it like the middle of the night yet?
是的。
Yeah.
We saw this party, and they we, like, told them what we were doing.
They were, oh, we'll give you snacks and stuff.
And and then we, like, chilled on that ledge for a bit, and Stu was, alright.
Like, let's go, dude.
Like, let's just keep climbing.
I was, dude, don't wanna keep climbing.
I wanna nap, dude.
I wanna take another nap.
I don't wanna blow it from here.
And Stu's like, the next generation's gonna, like, take your Flash Speed Rector.
And I'm like, I don't care as long as I do it in a day.
Like, who cares?
So then we, like, napped for, like, another hour and a half after our six hour alcove nap.
Dude, you napped on the round table in the middle of the night.
I'd be afraid to do that because you just wouldn't wake up until morning and then be like, oh, my freerider in a day turned into a freerider over two days because I freaking slept randomly.
I'd be like, what a botch.
You have to set an alarm.
不用。
No.
We had, like I don't know.
Someone was awake.
We we knew what was going on.
We were but, yeah, I, like, chilled there, took a nap, ate some food, played some games on my phone, and then we, like, started climbing up.
And, yeah, like, getting getting into the Scottie was kinda hard.
There was, like, that eleven d finger crack that, like, felt
对。
Yeah.
Super weird to me.
And then, like, entering the Scottie itself was kinda hard.
But then after that, it was pretty smooth sailing except for that five nine chimney at the top.
So I talked to Stu, and he was like, oh, this is the only pitch on the route I haven't done.
Like, I don't know which side to go in.
And I was like, oh, fuck.
And then, like, I think I went left side in to start off with, and then I was like, this is impossible.
Okay.
I down climbed, and then I went like or I was like, I kinda get up there, and I was like, I can't fit through this chimney.
Like, I don't know what to do.
And then, like, I down climbed, and then I went right side in.
And then I was like, okay.
I still can't fit through this chimney.
Like, I don't know what I'm doing wrong or, like, if I'm too big, like, I still feel like I don't fit.
So then I down climb.
I'm like, man, I've tried both left and right.
Like, what do I do?
And then I ended up, like, looking at it and, like, I saw some feet outright, so I ended up just laybacking the outside of the chimney, just fully layback to the top.
对。
Yeah.
I I do a combo.
I'm I'm half in the chimney, but I'm, like, lie backing the outside with my feet out on the left wall and stuff.
对。
Yeah.
I mean, I ended up just fully lay backing it, like, not in the chimney at all.
对。
Yeah.
That was kind of intense.
It was it was a hard move to get into the layback, but once I was in it, it felt super easy.
But that was kinda funny at the top, like, down climbing this thing twice and being like, got him one pitch from the Summit.
Like, what do I do?
But once we topped out, it was, like, so incredible.
I mean, it was a goal that I had been dreaming of for a long time.
Like, I went there with my dad at the end of senior year of high school, and it ended up being that season where El Cap was super wet, so we didn't even try.
And it was probably great that we didn't try because I didn't know what hauling was, and we kinda just had the plan for him to Jumar with, like, two or three days worth of stuff, which that would have been a total disaster.
And, I mean, we ended up having a great trip.
We did AstroMan, and I on-site had Westy faced that trip, and we did that over two days.
And it was super fun, but definitely glad I didn't get on free rider.
And then the next trip, I was planning to big wall it, but I had never big walled.
The friend ended up being, like, less psyched.
And then by the time I found someone who was psyched to go up it, it was, like, too hot to justify Blue Blow the Flash.
But then, yeah, the season when I did it, it was great.
That's cool that you'd been saving it for so long or that, you know, you'd kind of been thinking about it, but but it all sort of worked.
没错。
Yeah.
It seems super silly because I kept going to the valley and, like, just doing a bunch of random stuff and not free climbing El Cap.
Cause I was like, there that season, and then I ended up not going for it.
So I like free climb, Wet Liquor Nightmare, and a bunch of stuff on Pheefe Buttress.
And like the first season, did Astroman and Westy Face, which those are really cool.
I mean, Westy Face was so good.
But that's kind of a I mean, that's kind of the smarter way to do it in a way though because it's hard to free climb El Cap in a day if you haven't climbed a bunch of other things in the valley.
So it's like, kinda makes sense to free all these other routes so that then when you're up on El Cap, you're not like, oh my god, it's so slippery.
And like like, I you mean, if you haven't been to Yosemite at all and you just go up there in a day trying to send, it feels so it'd feel crazy.
You know, you'd be like, why is this so different?
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
No.
I mean, that was like one of the most incredible moments.
And I mean, I had been saving that moment for so long.
And yeah, I had so many decisions of, like, how this could go down, and it just ended up working out in the most perfect of ways.
And when you top El Cap at three in the morning after a twenty two hour push or whatever, is it an incredible thing?
Or are just like, I'm tired, and how do we find the descent?
You know, you're sort of like, oh, like, how do we get off this mountain?
是的。
Yeah.
不是。
No.
It was definitely a bit of both.
Like, I mean, I called my parents and they were like super psyched on it.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
Have your parents always been supportive of your climbing?
是的。
Yeah.
They have.
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, dad, like, Jumard up behind me in Yosemite, and he got into it with me.
But yeah.
Mean, they definitely want me to, like, graduate college and get a real job.
所以。
So
Were were they climbers at all before you, or or they didn't know anything about it and they just support your climbing?
I think, I mean, my dad knows more than my mom.
Like, we started climbing at the steep rock bouldering gym together.
And, yeah, we would always climb together and we were, like, pretty competitive at the start and I, like, started getting slightly better than him.
And but he would always find some dino in the gym that he could reach and I couldn't.
Jokes on him now that you're super tall.
You're like, Yeah.
We would like climb together and then, yeah, I like brought up the idea of us going to Yosemite together at the end of my senior year and he was super psyched on it and learned how to do more.
I like took him to the gunk because he started going back to the climbing gym.
So, yeah, my dad knows about it and has been supportive for sure.
And my mom, yeah.
I mean, she's supportive.
But, I mean, she just hasn't climbed, so she doesn't really know.
But they weren't climbers before me.
We got into it when I was, like, 10.
There are obviously a lot of incredibly strong young climbers right now.
But there are far fewer incredibly young strong climbers who also have this, like, desire to trad climb or to do dangerous routes or to climb big walls.
Like, that number is a lot lower.
Why do you think that is?
Yeah.
Don't know.
It's a good question.
It's interesting because I think the conventional wisdom is sort of that you have to build a base, you have to put in the time, you have to to build technique on the walls.
Basically, you have to practice and build up to it.
But in some ways, Will's kind of challenging that.
Though, I mean, to be fair, he has spent a lot of time trad climbing.
He's basically just built up his base in a slightly different way than than most people do in the valley.
And he's he's just a good example that when you have enough strength, you can get by, like, you could overcome a lot of other like strategy errors and things like that.
You know, it's like basically, if you're psyched and you're strong, you can you can make up for a lot.
是的。
Yeah.
Do you think that there is something that is that's special about Will's headspace though too?
Like, you've been in around a lot of great climbers.
Does his sort of boldness or confidence stand out even amongst the elite?
Well, I think his confidence is well founded because he is actually that strong and he can climb all these roots.
So, I mean, I think it makes sense that he's relatively bold because it seems like he is, in fact, climbing at that level.
I mean, I haven't climbed with him personally, so I haven't gotten to to, like, watch him climb something.
So I don't know if, you know, he's sketchy or something.
But I mean, judge judging from all the things that he's climbed, like, he just has you know, it's like he should be confident because he's so good.
He's done so many hard things.
It's like you would expect that that he would feel good when he's climbing.
是的。
Yeah.
I mean, he's basically just, you know, a number grade stronger than I was at at that age coming into the valley.
You know, basically is just like one generation younger, one grade higher, and it just opens totally different doors.
But it is kind of the same thing.
I mean, yeah, 14 Doctor, you're just kinda like, yeah, I mean, I feel like when I was coming into the valley, climbing 13 plus on gear was, like, pretty rad.
You know?
And now it's like, oh, if you're climbing 14 plus on gear Totally.
But then you're trying to climb the same routes in the valley.
Obviously, those routes are gonna be pretty easy if you're if you're climbing a whole number grade harder.
So so speaking of the gunks and and your family in New York and everything, I mean, I feel like you sort of first appeared on the scene with with your hard roots and the gunks, like doing the first descent of what's called the the best things in life for free, the freaking direct thing out the giant roof, which actually randomly I watched your Real Rock segment on that a while back because I freaking had a I think I had food poisoning or something.
I was, like, in bed, laid up, totally wasted and was just, like, couldn't do anything.
And then and pulled up like the Real Rock app.
Was like, oh, cool.

They watched this random film.
It was like a bonus feature thing of like you doing but like 14 trad stuff that like looks insane.
But how do you go from being a New York City gym kid to climbing 14 in the span of a few years.
You know I mean?
And and ask that, it's like, you know, I mean, nobody else really does that.
Like, how how does that happen?
Yeah.
I mean, once I had started trad climbing I mean, I think a while before I had watched that video of Sam Elias on Brozone, like, the lifer about, like, Russ Clooney history and whatnot.
And, yeah, that had me super stoked.
Like, all that drone footage of Sam Elias on that buttress.
I was like, this looks like the coolest thing ever.
And I had always had this idea in my head that there's, like, no sport climbing near New York City, which there isn't a lot.
There's like, Rumney, which is six hours away, but that's pretty far.
But then I was always psyched on the idea of getting into trad climbing, but I was always gym training, and then my friend got me out trad climbing.
And yeah, my first day out trad climbing with him, I did the dangler, which is this silly thing that climbs out this roof, and high exposure, which is the classic five six.
And it was just a super fun day.
And ever since then, was like, I just want to get out and climb at the gunks as much as possible.
And I just got super psyched on it, started leading quickly and working ozone soon, and then starting to work my way up to it was good that buttress.
There's so many variations that are harder and harder.
So I like, I did ozone.
I was like, okay, sick.
Let me try and do brozone, which is the direct.
And then it was friendzone, which has the boulder problem, but not the roof finish.
And then I was like, okay.
Best Things is like the ultimate line, and that was what I was like top rope soloing for a while and working.
And that thing was really cool.
I mean, I would always like kind of wrap by that, and I was like, god, this feels impossible.
And then like eventually, was like, oh, wow.
This is like doable.
It's sick.
And is that just a matter of your level rising in the gym?
Like, you're basically just able to climb harder and it opened up new horizons, or what do you think changed?
