Welcome to Compete Like a Champion.
You're here at doctor Larry Lauer, director of mental performance with Team USA Tennis and coach Johnny Parkes.
Today, we're coming at you with a Skill Drill.
We're building off from the last episode talking about Resilient Confident Competitors.
Larry, we've got some good drills here, but before we get into that, I'm gonna kick it over to you.
Give us a little recap from the last episode as we set up this Skill Drill.
So last time you and I talked in-depth about the kind of competitor we're trying to develop and why sometimes we don't get there.
The resilient confident competitors are the competitor that you can throw into any situation.
They'll try and find a way, they'll problem solve, they'll work through it, they'll stick with it.
And why people sometimes don't and the reasons that they don't maybe because they they think that, you know, they're overthinking things or it's scary to address these things or they don't believe in their skill sets.
They don't think it's important enough.
But we went through all that last time and we talked about the importance of engaging in routines in these pressure situations.
So you can go from being distracted and emotional to being composed and focused and really ready to bounce back and play the kind of point you wanna play.
So so this is gonna be more of a practical, as always, episode where we dig into how you might do that.
And and we also reflected on the legacy of doctor Jim Lauer who passed away, the creator of the sixteen second cure, author of of of a lot of books that many many people have read in the tennis world and the sports world.
And as we set up the skills drill here, it's gonna lead into a little bit of that that sixteen second cure in the four r's as we'd referenced in the last episode, which was built off that sixteen second response.
So if you're ready, Larry, we'll get into the first one here.
We got three for the listeners today.
好的。
Alright.
Let's do it.
Let's do it.
好的。
Alright.
So the three different drills we're gonna set up, one is actually a journaling drill or a notebook exercise.
The second one is a live ball drill, and then the last one is a skill execution drill.
So the first one is we talked about in the last episode how sometimes a lot of players are actually afraid to address the issue head on.
What is actually going on?
And I need to look in the mirror really deeply to admit what's going on so I can address it and and create a plan to move past it.
So this this journaling drill is, first of all, let's say, what is happening?
Why is it happening?
And what am I gonna do about it?
So as this leads into the the second drill, because it it can be connected, what is happening?
Well, in this scenario, we're gonna describe, okay.
Well, what is happening?
I'm losing a lot of really close games.
I'm getting to 30 all.
I'm getting to deuces, but then I'm losing a lot of games when it gets close.
好的。
Okay.
Well, why is that happening?
Now this is where you have to really write down a lot of things.
You have to close your eyes and think about being in those matches when you're in those moments and what is that self chat?
What is the brain talking to you about?
What is it saying?
This we really have to understand.
And then sometimes we dismiss those thoughts as not that important.
But if you remember, like, we don't have a lot of time in between points.
So every thought that comes into our brain has the ability to affect our behavior.
So in this scenario, I'm writing down everything.
My self talk is, well, first of all, I'm feeling tight.
I'm feeling nervous.
Okay?
所以……
So...
And that's then leading into me pushing the ball around the court, not feeling very proactive, not being able to play quote unquote my game.
So the thoughts that might be going through my head maybe like, just put the ball in the court.
That's one.
Another one might be like, I've gotta win this point.
Otherwise, I'm break point down if I'm serving, or I gotta win this point because I'm down in the game.
So we're starting to think about what the actual score of the game is.
A lot of external things bleeding into our brains here in terms of the the score line pressures and what's happening and then what that...
What that's doing to my body, which is freezing me up.
好。
Okay.
I gotta write down all those things, all those thoughts.
K?
It might be on my serve.
I get to 30 all and it's like, I gotta put the serve in.
I've gotta put this in.
And then you miss the first serve and maybe you missed it in net.
You walk to the net, you pick up the ball, you're walking back, you're saying don't double fault.
Don't double fault.
好的。
Okay.
Well, that's what's creating it.
So we have to address that.
So how are we gonna move past it?
Well, we got to create, you know, if we go back to the four hours, the sixty seconds ago, we have to create that routine in between points, something that works for us, positive physical response, the way in which we're preparing and moving on from the previous point into the next point.
K?
We have to do something that works for us.
Do I try out the towel?
Do I have wristbands?
Do I go and pick up every single ball on the court and take my time choosing which two I wanna I wanna use?
Sometimes that it doesn't really matter, but I just wanna get all the balls on the court because it gives me that time to calm down, breathe, think, and move on.
好的。
Okay.
Great.
Now create your plan.
Sometimes when we're serving then and we're we're trying to move past these sort of negative thoughts or the the the the nervous thinking, We're only thinking about what I wanna do with the serve.
好。
K.
Serve, put it down the tee or serve out wide.
And we don't think about the plus one.
So we're actually loading pressure into just making that serve into that target rather than thinking beyond it.
好的。
Okay.
I'm gonna serve wide.
I'm gonna hit open court, and then I'm gonna look for my forehand on the plus two.
So there's my pattern.
I wanna set it up.
好的。
Okay.
I'm gonna serve down the tee, comes back to my forehand.
I wanna go back behind the body.
If it comes into my backhand, I wanna pull it court, and then I wanna look for my forehand, whatever it may be.
We gotta think beyond the serve so that it's almost a thinking that assumes that we're going to execute the serve because we're thinking beyond the into our plus one plus two.
But either way, we're ready for the plus one and plus two because we've already given it thought.
If it's on the return, my return routine might be bouncing before I settle into my ready athletic position, relaxing my shoulders, relaxing my jaw, getting my breathing, and it might be okay.
First serve return goes through the middle.
I don't know where it's going, but I'm gonna put that ball through the middle and then I'm gonna get my recovery.
The next one I'm gonna pull cross court.
There's my return plus one of the first serve.
Okay?
So I'm dialed into that.
My second serve might be okay.
I can be a little bit more aggressive here.
I can be more proactive with my acceleration, but I'm gonna go heavy in the cross court or with the pull.
So off the deuce side, heavy cross court might be running around my backhand maybe, or it might be I'm going to take my backhand early down the line, which is, you know, it's a pulling shot.
So that's my plan.
We've talked about this all the time.
That's that's nothing new than what we've talked about, but that process and working on it from that specific moment is gonna be important.
So that leads...
Well, I'll stop there, Larry.
Stop there, your thoughts.
Well, that's a great exercise.
I like how you're starting to attack why you're seeing the behavior on the court, not just saying, well, take more time or go heavy middle or something, which again, those are good, but you're getting at the core reason why the player is struggling in those those moments where things they're struggling.
Love the idea of the plus ones and how that really kind of gets your attention so much off the serve and onto the next ball.
So you're not maybe overemphasizing the serve, which is important in those moments.
Other thing I would add is, you know, you talked about the four hour sixteen second cure embedded within that is the idea of a a breath or two to help you let go so you can refocus your mind on the plan.
So you're going to still think about don't double fault and that thought can come up, but then you're gonna breathe, accept that thought and let go and refocus on exactly what that serve is gonna do for you, the target and the next ball, or it could be where you want to toss to go, but something like that or using your legs and going up.
So you're gonna give yourself something really specific to an action to focus on instead of what you're trying to avoid.
But the breathing is gonna be the the way to get there and then you finish up your routine, you go to the line and off you go.
And I think I think as coaches and parents listen to this and they're thinking about, well, how can I help my my child, my player in this process?
Well, your job here is to spark ideas, to spark thoughts.
You can't answer it for them.
You may you may, you know, you may know your child, you may know your player really well, but they have to explore the why.
So you can ask some thought provoking questions as they think through this.
好的。
Okay.
What's the phrases that come through your mind in those moments?
What is your brain telling you in that specific moment?
What behaviors are you feeling as you approach the line?
Do you feel tight and nervous?
Like, you've got to describe how that is.
And the goal here is not to get them to to really think about their feelings.
It's more...
It's just to address what is actually happening.
So we don't want to harp on the the feeling of where they're at because that only accelerates maybe at doing...
Happening more, but we do need them to address what's going on.
So parents and coaches, this is really about guiding them, but the player needs to be the one if they're going to work through from junior into sort of...
As they get older into into maybe the pros or to college, they've gotta be the ones to sort of self diagnose and assess what they're going through because they're the ones that are going to know the best.
We just have to get them to think about it.
We don't want to jump to the conclusion ourselves and tell them what's...
Why why they're going through it.
We need to spark some questions to help them recognize and then help them write down why they're going through it from their own thinking, their own perspective.
And we may even know why or from our experience have a pretty good idea what it is, but getting them to say it, address it is huge because they start to own it, right?
And become vulnerable.
And we know that vulnerability can be strength.
It is strength.
So getting them to explore and helping them realize that these are normal feelings like feeling tight in pressure moments.
All the pros talk about it.
It's what you're gonna do about it.
And getting to that core understanding of why.
So if you're trying to help the player don't stop at I'm getting tight and then give them the answers like, well, let's talk about why that tightness is there and understand that that's normal so that we can really start to address the core issue.
Maybe maybe they're afraid and we don't realize they're have some kind of doubt about a certain stroke or some history, you know, some situation you're not even thinking of that's coming back into their brain from previous tournament or match.
So that's why it's so important to let them verbalize what actually is going on.
So awesome.
So that tees up then getting into, the second drill here, which is let's take that 30 year old perspective or the deuce perspective.
We'll do 30 year old, you know, in college here, we we...
You play, sudden death deuces.
Obviously, if you're if you're not, you're doing juniors, you're gonna be playing out, add, you know, advantages.
But 30 all is a pivotal moment.
That's when pressure starts loading in the most.
So the second drill here is a live ball where you're just playing a set from 30 all.
And as coaches or as play...
Players can have their journals by the side of them or their notebooks by the side of them, but you're playing out this set both as the serve and the returner, logging how many service games you win from 30 all, how many return games you win from 30 all.
Now the key component here is in between games.
Let's say the changeover is going through that notebook process, but very quickly.
好的。
Okay.
This thought crept into my mind in this game.
好的。
Okay.
So next one, I've gotta replace that with doubling down on the process a little bit more.
好的。
Okay.
So I can't get that voice out of my head.
I need a replacement phrase.
So come up with the replacement phrase.
It is, okay.
Bounce your feet.
Get on top of the serve.
加油。
Let's go.
Whatever it may be.
Something as simple as that to replace the, oh, I just gotta put the serve in can be enough to get you over the hump.
It really can.
So it doesn't have to be a, like, a extremely detailed phrase.
It can just be something more positive.
加油。
Let's go.
You got this.
Get up.
Let's, you know, keep those feet going.
You got this.
Play tough.
Whatever it may be, it's digging yourself up, basically.
So playing a set out from 30 all and depending on what you like to do, you can put some pressure on there.
We talked about resilience is also the ability to deal with pressure.
If you lose a set, maybe there's something on it.
You know, like, we don't mind here doing a...
You gotta be careful here with juniors and physical punishments too much.
But if you have a sort of a good rapport, we have good rapport with our college guys here.
And if there's a little bit of something else on the on the set, then it places a bit more importance, layers in a little bit more pressure, then you can do that too.
So that is the second drill I've I've got for you there, Larry.
Well, you know, situational or score training, think is extremely valuable.
And I think it's important to recognize the progression from off court to on court that you're that you're talking about.
You're identifying a specific situation that is performance issue.
How big an issue it is is...
Who knows?
但是……
But...
And then you're practicing it in that situation in practice.
I think that's extremely valuable.
That gives the player a chance to really explore how they wanna work through these situations, gives them reps.
The stress level is not what it's gonna be in a a college match or a junior tournament match.
We don't expect that, but that in some ways is good because that allows them to get some success in a lower stress environment that's similar to what they're gonna deal with in a match.
So it's important as the coach on the court if you're doing this not to get lost in the execution of the shots or the strategy.
Obviously, you gotta pay attention to those things, but you really also wanna pay attention to what they're doing in between points.
Are they following their routines?
Are they doing the plan that you set out?
Because if they're not, you're not really training any kind of consistent planned response.
You're just kinda doing whatever.
So you're gonna need to check-in with them what their thinking's like.
Are they doing their steps?
But not if they're just doing their steps, you know, going to the towel, taking a breath, refocusing on the plan, coming back with energy, doing the rituals at the end.
But are those steps effective?
Is it moving their mind from last point to current point?
Do they feel committed to a plan?
Do they have a quiet mind as they step to the line?
So all these things you're gonna be checking on.
You can infer that from the way they play, but best to talk about it.
That's why you're out there doing this coaching work, right, is to understand what they're going through and and then helping them work through it.
So extremely important to, you know, really kinda dial into the actual quality of that between points effort, if you wanna put it that way.
And I think, obviously, coaches can see if they're doing it or not.
But then having the players grade themselves at every changeover Mhmm.
How well did I feel like I did my routines?
Well, if I did it after every point, then it's a 10 out of 10.
If I wasn't doing it after every point and it was every other point, then it's a five out of 10.
I'm only doing it 50% of the time.
I was like, okay.
Well then, results will follow the process.
So if you're...
If you are winning games, losing games evenly, you know, and you're 50% doing your routine...
In between point routine, then, you know, that's part of the that's part of the problem.
So, yeah, coaches, you get to see it.
Players, they need to they need to be truthful with themselves and grading themselves on how well they're doing.
And, obviously, their goal is to keep increasing how well that they're doing something.
好的。
Alrighty.
So that moves us into the third side, which does actually bleed into more of an execution drill.
You know, when pressure loads in into a game, players can either go two ways.
There can be a lot of ex...
There can be the execution errors.
Some players actually play super aggressive, but may just have an off day, just missing wide, just missing long, just missing in the net.
Some players go, which I think is the more common way of going, which is more defensive, more reactive.
I'm gonna play a little deeper in the core.
I'm gonna make balls.
It's almost like a a strategy of hope, hope my opponent misses.
Now there's something to that.
Being able to make balls and defends, that's great.
Your your opponent will, every now and again, obviously, give you errors.
And the higher level they become, though, the less errors they give you and the more that they're willing to actually take the match away from you in those moments.
So they play proactive tennis.
And so part of that is obviously execution.
Your ability to step up is your confidence in your execution.
So let's talk about that resilient confident competitor.
This is really now leading on to the confidence side of it is we need a drill that does emphasize execution to help build confidence that in those moments, you can step inside the court, take space, play a little bit more proactive and aggressively when when when it's there and not, oh, there's my ball to hit.
I've got my forehand.
I can be a bit more aggressive here and take advantage and get control of the point, but now I'm gonna sit back and I'm gonna roll balls again.
好。
Okay.
Well, there's a confidence issue there in the execution.
So the last drill is a very simple one.
It's the end of every practice.
You set a number, could be ten, fifteen, 20, whatever it is.
And it needs to be a drill that is focused on So it could be mid court capping forehands, moving them around a little bit, but essentially getting them to move onto a ball, forwards onto a ball, and being aggressive with it.
所以……
So...
But they've gotta make 10 in a row.
And if you wanna add in that layer of distractions, we talked about being able to execute under distractions or resilience is about dealing with distractions and managing them.
You could have you could have a bit of fun with this.
If you're juniors and you're in a group, you could have people shouting, you know, like trying to put you off, right before you hit.
You know, I know our college guys like to do it and, you know, they get into it with each other.
They know a lot about each other, so they'll, you know, they'll get into it.
But I think with juniors, you can have some fun with it, get them to shout, get them to scream a little bit right before contact, and that helps them understand that they've got to channel that focus to not get distracted.
Now there's execution layers.
The first layer may be okay.
I'm just gonna be proactive and accelerate through the court anywhere.
Just put that ball in, but it's gotta be hit the right way.
And, you know, when we say we hit big, we hit big to big targets when we're trying to build confidence.
The second level level is obviously making those targets smaller.
So now I could put those lanes down the core, whether you go a, b, c, d or lanes one, two, three, four from deuce to ads, whatever you call them.
Now we can say, okay, well, this shot now has to go in either lanes a or d or one and four, well, again, whatever you call them.
And then the next layer is making the targets even smaller still.
And, obviously, those targets get smaller as skill gets higher.
So it's making sure you've got the appropriate targets for the skill level that you're working at.
And we like to do it at the end of practice because the player is fatigued, probably fatigued a bit physically and mentally.
So right at the end of practice then when you have to focus on eliminating the distractions of maybe a teammate or a a training partner kinda screaming before you hit a shot, and then there's an execution thing, then that is layering in a bit of stress.
You can't leave practice until you've done the execution drill.
And so, yeah, when the player's a bit more mentally, cognitively fatigued, the patient is a little less, they're physically fatigued, but they still have to figure out the execution.
I think that helps build confidence when they get over that and going, wow.
That was tough, but I managed to do it.
And now my practice is done, and I feel great about myself leaving practice.
So that's what I got for you, Larry.
It's sort of hopefully all leads from one to the next makes sense, but that's something we like to do here and something that we've done with with juniors there and, you know, USTA.
I know they like to finish off with with drills that focus on a little bit of an execution drill to finish off practice and...
I think it's again, shows us progression from doing something and then making it more advanced.
A more simple version, and then we're gonna make it a little bit more challenging, and then you're throwing in these distractions.
You know, I find that you're you're trying to find distractions that really kinda get to that player.
Because some players won't be bothered by random noises.
They'll be unfazed.
But if you, you know, say something about their serve, they're suddenly gonna be really bothered.
So the thing about this too everybody has to understand is there there needs to be a good level of trust.
You need to create the right environment, a safe environment where you can work on this thing.
You gotta have that relationship where the player understands you're there to help them work through these things.
This is not being used as sort of a, you know, a punishment or just getting after them.
所以……
So...
And I think you think about this is more advanced.
So I think you think about doing this after you've done the other things for a while.
Where you've done the off court journaling, even visualizing how they wanna respond.
You've done the the 30 all games.
You've done normal scoring and using routines and they're having success.
And then you're like, okay, you're handling these things pretty well.
Let's let's bring it up a notch and and explain why.
Make sure that they're on board.
One thing you mentioned is really interesting to me.
I'm just gonna bring it up back up now is that one of the reasons why players might not be aggressive or play a a more, you know, sort of aggressive style under pressure is because they get false positives when they're younger that, you know, just putting the ball on plan, not missing.
I think you're rewarded for it as you know.
And so...
And we also know younger people are very immediate gratification oriented.
What feels good now?
What I like now?
We have to think about the long term development.
We have to help them think about the game that they wanna play when they're 15, 16, 17, 18.
The game you're playing now isn't gonna work.
So it's that false positive.
I'm getting rewarded.
I'm feeling confident, but hard times are coming if I don't adapt my game to the the increasing size and physicality and confidence of the players that we're facing in the future.
So so you have to have that discussion about long term development.
This is why we're doing this, is to have you develop a game that can withstand the pressures of of what's to come.
但是……
But...
Yeah, really nice progression.
And, again, I would say take your time with this.
This doesn't need to be done in a week.
It can be done over months.
Really kind of coming back to it over and over again and the importance of making sure the player is having some success, in these pressure situations before you add more pressures like consequences or or distractions.
I think that's a great point.
We talk about habits take at least, what is it, thirty to sixty days to really form.
This is something that if you're if you're coaches sorting out your schedule for the week, this is something you can do, let's say, on every Thursday or Friday, whatever day, every week.
So the player knows that on that day every week, this is that...
This is the test.
So you're training, you're playing, and then every Thursday or whenever you decide you're gonna do it for the next month, every Thursday, there's the test.
This is specifically what I'm working on, this is how I'm gonna do it, I know what to expect but I'm gonna double down on what I'm focusing on.
So when I go to my notebook and I ask myself how did I do rate myself out of 10, what did I do with my routines, the execution skill drill, then I can see progress over time.
And if there's no progress, if I had a down day, then great.
Let's address that.
Why did I have a down day?
Why was I not able to do this as well or as efficient as in the past?
Because that's exactly what's gonna happen in matches.
Like I know I know what to expect.
I know what I'm trying to do, but I'm finding it very difficult to do it.
好的。
Okay.
Then let's go back to the beginning.
Write down what's going on, why is it happening, what can I do about it?
You gotta do that first as a player.
You gotta think through that.
When your brain and when you're able to sort of rationalize with with good thoughts, You gotta think through it.
If you do get really stuck after giving it a lot of thought, then go to your coach.
If it's you, you know, your parent helps you out a lot, maybe go to your parent and ask them what are they seeing.
But don't just do it immediately.
You've got to actually spend the time thinking through it first and then go back.
So that could be another thing.
And then, you know, in that whole process just cycles through.
That's growth.
That's learning.
And if you wanna get better, you'll commit to doing that kind of process.
I got to address it, then let's come up with some drills and exercises that are going to to get me past it, and then let's let's move it forward with some execution, execution drill.
It's a cyclical process.
As you get through one thing and start doing one thing a lot better, you start recognizing the next little thing that pops up that you're struggling with.
很好。
Great.
Start the process again and go through it.
This next month, we're honing in on that and keep repeating the process.
I think that's that's wise and just thinking about the timing of this and how you're gonna apply it over time and and create that learning.
Every situation is a learning opportunity.
So if you didn't perform well, say in a 30 all game, that's an opportunity to learn and to grow.
And that might be the very thing that helps you end up playing confidently in that situation.
You've gone to that place that's uncomfortable, that's messy and you've worked it out, you figured it out.
But that takes time, that takes reps, that takes awareness and reflection and working through it.
So, you know, I think too often we wanna just say, well, if you can just hit this ball just right.
It's not really about that at this point.
It's about competing and, you know, really problem solving and come up with plans and then helping yourself stick to those plans.
But this is a very nice progression.
The warning there again is just don't rush it, keep coming back to it, work through it over time, help them learn the skills, make sure that they're using the routines in between points in an effective way.
Awesome.
Well, I think that brings us to an end of the Skill Drill.
So we'll we'll wrap it up there.
