Fed Rate Cut Decision LIVE: How Markets Reacted to the Fed Decision Today

In this episode of the Crypto Rundown, Tevo and Brian react live to the Federal Reserve’s rate decision and what could be Jerome Powell’s final press conference. They break down macro uncertainty, inflation risks, and why markets may remain choppy despite Bitcoin showing relative strength. The episode mixes real-time analysis with prediction market bets, highlighting how traders position around major economic events. They close by discussing what Powell’s tone means for markets, the transition to a new Fed chair, and why volatility could create buying opportunities in the months ahead.

Crypto one zero one fam, we're back again to talk about my favorite online shopping, and it is Quince.

Speaker 0

Lately, I've just been more intentional what I wear every day.

Speaker 0

I've talked about it before.

Speaker 0

The Florida heat, I gotta be very intentional about my wardrobe, and I'm leaning into pieces that feel easy, comfortable, but still put together as the weather heats up in Florida.

Speaker 0

It just makes getting dressed simpler.

Speaker 0

Quince

Quince has my go to.

Speaker 0

The fabrics feel elevated, the fits are clean, and everything just works.

Speaker 0

And I'm so busy on the podcast.

Speaker 0

I just don't wanna overthink it.

Speaker 0

Quince

Quince has all the wardrobe staples for spring.

Speaker 0

Think 100% European linen shorts and shirts from $34, lightweight, breathable, and comfortable, but still look put together and clean.

Speaker 0

100% Pima cotton tees with a softness that has to be felt.

Speaker 0

Their pants also hit the same balanced, relaxed, and comfortable, but still polished enough to wear pretty much anywhere.

Speaker 0

Everything is priced 50 to 80% less because they cut out the middleman from your favorite brands, but don't sacrifice on the quality.

Speaker 0

Quince

Speaker 0

Welcome back to the Crypto one zero one podcast, Federal Rate Cut Decision Spectacular.

Speaker 0

We haven't gotten to do one in a couple Fed days because we've had a lot going on, inside the community and traveling and in person stuff.

Speaker 0

It just didn't line up, but we're back for this one.

Speaker 0

And as we should be, joined by my friend Brian for Fed Chair Powell's last, last rate decision, last press conference, unless something wild happens with the Kevin Warsh nomination, which seems to be originally, I think there was a lot of political polarization around that.

Speaker 0

It seems to be going forward a little bit more smoothly than most people thought.

Speaker 0

Obviously, the current president administration has been at odds with Fed chair Powell over the last year at least.

Speaker 0

So it kind of gave it maybe a little bit rocky politicization of the worst decision.

Speaker 0

But I think worst has had a good press conference, of course, with the support of a friend of the show, Larry Fitzgerald, sitting behind him in that news conference the other week.

Speaker 0

That looks like it's gonna go through.

Speaker 0

Poly market odds or the betting market odds are showing that worst is gonna get passed without much pushback.

Speaker 0

So this should be Fed Chair Powell's last decision.

Speaker 0

Here's what we're gonna do.

Speaker 0

It's 02:15.

Speaker 0

We're gonna give fifteen minutes.

Speaker 0

We'll do like a quick little market update.

Speaker 0

Then we're gonna really focus 02:30.

Speaker 0

So in thirteen minutes, the the press conference starts.

Speaker 0

So we're gonna tune into that.

Speaker 0

We'll listen to it together, like we've done in the past.

Speaker 0

And then on the back end of that, we'll, we'll react to it.

Speaker 0

We'll see how markets react.

Speaker 0

I think the, the official decision out, there is no, no movement on the Fed rates, which everybody knew.

Speaker 0

That was as expected, but it all comes down to press conference.

Speaker 0

And I guess, Brian, as I hand it off to you for your initial takes, it does it feels like it's a monumentous one just because this is the last one.

Speaker 0

But then I don't know, like, what's it'll be interesting to see how the market reacts because he's on his way out.

Speaker 0

Right?

Speaker 0

So, I don't know how much, you know, he'll stir he could or would or even want to stir the pot before he leaves.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I think that's a good call out.

Speaker 1

We it's definitely gonna see what Powell's tone's gonna be like on this, this press conference, and, I mean, he could he could get kinda, you know, wild if he wanted and say some things on his way out the door that affect the markets.

Speaker 1

I don't I don't think he is because he seems like he's held his composure and held it together, you know, up until this point.

Speaker 1

So I'm expecting kind of just like a nothing burger, him kind of like a little farewell and the market doesn't react, but we're tuning in for a reason because anything could happen, and we wanna be there first to react to it and see how the market reacts to it.

Speaker 1

And I know we got fifteen minutes to kill, and, a little inside joke for anybody that was here in the last show that we taped.

Speaker 1

Maybe maybe Tevo just wants to go off camera and let me, let me just ramble for fifteen minutes alone and lonely.

Speaker 1

How's the car, bud?

Speaker 1

Is everything okay?

Speaker 0

对的。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

We'll we'll survive.

Speaker 0

We'll get the wheels spinning soon enough, but, that was a great comment by, I got can't

Speaker 1

remember the name of Holy whale, dude.

Speaker 2

He's Alright.

Speaker 2

那

The

Speaker 0

That was unbelievable.

Speaker 0

The fate like, Brian's face, Uncle Brian when Tevo had to leave him with the solo show for twenty minutes.

Speaker 0

That that was a daunting task, but you did well, my friend.

Speaker 0

You guided everybody towards it as we continue on for the well, brighter days are ahead.

Speaker 0

The wheels will be moving.

Speaker 0

As we pull up coin market cap, down day across the board for both stocks, Crypto seems to be a little bit of a pullback going on.

Speaker 0

I'm working on my year end thesis.

Speaker 0

I, you know, I don't there's something there's something to be said here about the macro environment, the Fed chair change.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna try and pull the statistics for this on Friday.

Speaker 0

I believe, I believe I've mentioned it, but we'll try and pull the chart.

Speaker 0

It was something about the 11 out of 13.

Speaker 0

11 out of the last 13 Fed chairs, the market has quote unquote tested and put the market into a correction during and at right after the Fed chair was was put into place.

Speaker 0

So keeping an eye on that, keeping an eye on the macro.

Speaker 0

Again, I just believe what's going on in Iran as much as in the early days, we kind of just chalked it up to the fog of war and kind of knew that eventually the narrative will switch on it because the administration doesn't like the market going down.

Speaker 0

I do fear that there's it's been too quiet over there, and I feel like everybody's just gotten bored of these volleyball and ping pong headlines that we've called it recently.

Speaker 0

And and I don't have any insight into the truth of the matter, but if there is an oil shortage that has continued to go on for we're getting to the point where it's too long.

Speaker 0

And so the supply, it takes time to catch up.

Speaker 0

So as you go into the summer, and a lot of people want to start driving, they want to start boating, they want to start flying.

Speaker 0

If there's a if there's a fuel shortage, especially like a jet fuel shortage, that's going to start showing up in the inflation numbers.

Speaker 0

So there's there's a couple things that could get a little sticky here.

Speaker 0

Brian,

Anything pumping out to you or sticking out to you, Brian?

Speaker 0

I will say from a crypto specific perspective, Bitcoin has been very, very strong, which we like to see.

Speaker 0

And you can always go back and test the lows, but I I do think that, you know, kind of Bitcoin is that famous lead on the way down, lead on the way out.

Speaker 0

So I I I am I am confident in my Bitcoin bags, but your thoughts overall, Brian.

Speaker 1

是的。

Yeah.

Speaker 1

I I don't think it's surprising that the market's peeling back a little bit here.

Speaker 1

Tevo,

You know, you you nailed it, Tevo.

Speaker 1

The Fed chair the market likes to test the new Fed chair, and we're gonna probably see that.

Speaker 1

And I just kinda my gut, not a TA South thing, my gut is that we're gonna probably chop in the seventies range for a little while.

Speaker 1

We we got close to $80.

Speaker 1

We had some euphoric times there just getting up to, you know, out of that lower range, and now we're now we're kind of out of that range, and we're we're establishing a new one.

Speaker 1

So I'm not surprised to kinda see that we're gonna peel back slightly here.

Speaker 1

Man, you're talking about jet fuel.

Speaker 1

True story.

Speaker 1

I'm booking a little trip for the family this summer, and we're a family of six, so any dollar you can save on an airline ticket's huge.

Speaker 1

And I kid you not, you almost need a second mortgage right now to, get on an airplane.

Speaker 1

And then I was like my wife was like, oh, the prices are gonna go down.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

They might go down.

Speaker 1

I'm like, I don't think so.

Speaker 1

If the prices of oil are still, you know, as volatile as they we should just buy them right now because who knows what's gonna happen.

Speaker 1

So like you said, there there's some hidden volatility out there that we could probably hit into that are gonna probably affect the overall markets.

Speaker 1

That's that's the stock market.

Speaker 1

That's the crypto market.

Speaker 1

Nothing to, you know, slam the alarm button for me.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

We're the permables here in the crypto market for good reason.

Speaker 1

There's a lot of catalysts also to get us into some awesome new ranges.

Speaker 1

But I we we've talked about.

Speaker 1

We we we see kind of like a slow grind up.

Speaker 1

We we've all we've said on these rundowns that we didn't think we were gonna wake up one day and be at a $100,000 Bitcoin.

Speaker 1

So this isn't surprising to me.

Speaker 0

对。

Yeah.

Speaker 0

We're we're hiring the short squeezes.

Speaker 3

我们

We're

Speaker 0

always in for one.

Speaker 0

And I think it's always for anybody that's new out there listening, we got a couple awesome, some people seem to be tuning in, some new viewers maybe from YouTube.

Speaker 0

Welcome.

Speaker 0

We've got Deb.

Speaker 0

还有Yolo。

We've got Yolo.

Speaker 0

Anybody else in the chat?

Speaker 0

Let us know who's there.

Speaker 0

Let us know where you're calling in or watching in from on this international show as we reach around the globe each and every live.

Speaker 0

I think what what I we haven't said this in a while is just to you know, again, we're not financial advisors.

Speaker 0

We're we're friends talking about crypto in the markets, but also I know you and I know me and Brendan and Bryce.

Speaker 0

We all have like long term portfolios and long term investing is, you know, you have two, five, maybe a ten year time horizon for long term, and then you have short term.

Speaker 0

You're trading momentum money makers, which Brian and Joe lead.

Speaker 0

These are trades.

Speaker 0

And so a lot of times, because we do this show a lot, we're talking about our trades.

Speaker 0

We're especially, I think, the most recent dip, we were really myself calling the IGV and saying, hey.

Speaker 0

These softwares are a little overdone.

Speaker 0

We liked Bitcoin where it was at.

Speaker 0

We said the pain trade was higher.

Speaker 0

We went over that.

Speaker 0

And those were great calls, and we had a lot of momentum in the trades.

Speaker 0

I just feel where we are now from my perspective is like, I'm a little I'm a little hesitant to kinda get in some trades right now.

Speaker 0

Again, we we think Bitcoin grinds higher the rest of the year.

Speaker 0

But from a short term perspective, I can't tell you where the next 10% might be right now at these levels.

Speaker 0

And I feel that way for the market too.

Speaker 0

I like to bring market talking to this because I think Crypto AI technology is all converging into one.

Speaker 0

And when I look at the technology sector, I just see like, yes, we're grinding into these all time highs for the S and P, the Nasdaq, but it's like, it's so lopsided.

Speaker 0

There's some of these these some some of these technology stocks, Brian, are flying.

Speaker 0

Like the memory trade, the chips trade, they're up a 150, 200% on the year.

Speaker 0

And that that's helping the indices go higher, but it also feels like it feels like a little bit of a blow off top.

Speaker 0

Kinda like we had that quote unquote looking back at the blow off top at the top of the market last year for Crypto.

Speaker 0

You know, what does when does the music stop on this chip shade?

Speaker 0

Maybe it doesn't.

Speaker 0

Maybe it brings us the next, you know, to $78,000 on the S and P.

Speaker 0

Who knows?

Speaker 0

But something feels it's starting to look like a hockey stick on some of these trades while the rest of the market, the softwares and the oil's pulling back a little bit where the rest of the market's struggling.

Speaker 0

So I I think there's there's some things to watch out here.

Speaker 1

Getting a little frothy frothy out there.

Speaker 1

That is for sure.

Speaker 1

We'll have to see it's it's that's it feels like the hockey stick you know you never want to buy the top of that hockey stick you know we've talked about the top of the chart, I hope things go higher I hope I hope global liquidity, you know, fires through the roof and all the markets start going higher, but there's certainly, there's certain there's certainly some metrics to keep our eyes on and again to just double down on what we're saying about the Crypto market, I'm not trading much right now.

Speaker 1

Like like weird short term money momentum money maker calls like, you know, these like ones that like are could go viral in like weeks.

Speaker 1

I'm I'm I still love that.

Speaker 1

There's still a lot of opportunity but just from like the overall macro perspective of of Crypto, I'm not trading a lot.

Speaker 1

I'm not I'm not opening any longs.

Speaker 1

I'm not opening any shorts.

Speaker 1

I'm just kinda, like, like, chilling in this range, but, hey, if I if I can't find a couple bucks that I'm looking to just kind of put away long term, which I always am, I'm not I'm not apprehensive to buy a lot of the top cryptos here either.

Speaker 1

You know?

Speaker 1

I think there's a path for them to continue to go up through the rest of the year.

Speaker 1

So it when we zoom out, we look back.

Speaker 1

This will probably feel like Bitcoin's on sale, but you're right.

Speaker 1

We don't know where that next 15% move.

Speaker 1

It could go up.

Speaker 1

It could go down.

Speaker 1

And I'm not I'm not trying to fight it either.

Speaker 1

I'm not trying to figure that out.

Speaker 1

没错。

No.

Speaker 1

We're just trying to chill.

Speaker 1

Have a good time.

Speaker 0

And we're trying to be honest because I think, you know, again, three weeks ago, two weeks ago, we were kind of pounding the table.

Speaker 0

The pain trades higher, the pain trades higher.

Speaker 0

So it's good for everybody who kind of comes in and listens and then doesn't come back for a couple of weeks like, hey, stay in tuned with us, go through the motions, go through the work, have some fun along the way, of course, by listening to the Crypto 101 podcast.

Speaker 0

But we're just trying to, you know, just trying to help the people gauge gauge because here's here's before we move on to the Fed meeting here.

Speaker 0

Here's what actually there's reports, and I I don't like the politicization of the war.

Speaker 0

I'm not trying to play the next trade because of politics, but when I started to see headlines like this with jet fuel bidding wars starting to break out as airlines confront global stress test, And obviously, Europe's probably facing this more than The US.

Speaker 0

But again, the travel industry, especially airplanes, is a global business.

Speaker 0

And the they're not it's not like your car, like, oh, I gotta go on this drive.

Speaker 0

I'm on you know, my fuel tank's empty.

Speaker 0

Let's hit the gas station.

Speaker 0

These type of companies are looking months and months and months in advance for their oil needs.

Speaker 0

And so that's why these type of headlines that don't have politics tied to them, these are little breadcrumbs that are making me think like, is there something going on over there that's gonna kind of linger a little bit longer and possibly raise inflation, which again, I don't think a cut's warranted, but it's definitely gonna keep the fed in a hold pattern.

Speaker 0

As we transition to the fed, we got a couple minutes here.

Speaker 0

Let's go over our bets.

Speaker 0

We like to make these we like to make these fed meetings, Brian and I, fun.

Speaker 0

We put a little action on it.

Speaker 0

Nothing much.

Speaker 0

Again, this isn't financial advice.

Speaker 0

This is just fun, a little gambling.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna pull up mine on the screen for everybody.

Speaker 0

What is Powell gonna say?

Speaker 0

He's going on in two minutes.

Speaker 0

I have him in the mentions market.

Speaker 0

Everything that I bought folks is under 30¢.

Speaker 0

So I'm going for trying to more than double my money.

Speaker 0

As you can see here, not a ton of dollars into this, just sprinkling, having some fun for the show.

Speaker 0

But I said yes to balance sheet.

Speaker 0

I think that was about 30%, so like 25 to win, you know what, 60.

Speaker 0

A dot plot was about 15%.

Speaker 0

So that's good.

Speaker 0

That could be $10 to win.

Speaker 0

I don't know, maybe like 60.

Speaker 0

Another one was Iran.

Speaker 0

That's a, well, do you remember what Iran was?

Speaker 0

I know Brian took Iran.

Speaker 1

30¢.

Speaker 0

30¢.

Speaker 1

It's 24 now.

Speaker 1

So leaks leaks leaks.

Speaker 1

He's not saying Iran.

Speaker 0

It's all about the Q and a.

Speaker 0

It's all about the Q and a.

Speaker 0

This is my long shot.

Speaker 0

President, it was like 9¢.

Speaker 0

So 10 to win about, 80 or 90 there.

Speaker 0

And then replace, replaces, replace, or replacement was about 30.

Speaker 0

Because I think, you know, hey, I wish my replacement well.

Speaker 0

I think we set up, you know, the new incoming Fed that's going to replace me.

Speaker 0

I think that's in play.

Speaker 0

I think that's in play.

Speaker 0

Brian, do you wanna talk about yours, and I'll start to monitor the, live video feed from the Fed.

Speaker 1

对的

Yeah.

Speaker 1

那当然

For sure.

Speaker 1

Actually, interesting enough while you were talking there, I had to throw one more little wager on the comment, no comment.

Speaker 1

And, it's at 28¢ is a yes that he says no comment.

Speaker 0

And I just kinda see that on mine.

Speaker 0

I need a little action on that.

Speaker 1

Well, you said something about it's all about the Q and A.

Speaker 1

Like, who knows?

Speaker 1

Powell's last press conference, maybe one of those reporters feels a little frisky.

Speaker 1

They wanna get one in on him.

Speaker 1

Ask him a question they haven't wanted to ask him all year, and he he fires back with a no comment.

Speaker 1

I I I don't hate that.

Speaker 0

I I No.

Speaker 0

I think that I like that.

Speaker 0

I didn't see that on mine.

Speaker 1

Polymarket

It's on Polymarket.

Speaker 1

I don't know if you're on Polymarket or Cauchy, but, I'm on the under, and I'm hating this side of it right now.

Speaker 1

I'm on the under inflation 40 times, and I I feel even worse about it because during our talk, we said inflation four times because I'm programmed to count them right now.

Speaker 1

So that's probably not a good look.

Speaker 1

Few other ones here I have Iran that he says Iran we'll see and then there was another one I'm looking for my

Speaker 0

是的

yeah

Speaker 1

that oh and then I I have a no on oil at 5¢.

Speaker 1

I he's definitely saying oil, but, I mean, I put I put $10 on it to win a $140.

Speaker 1

Just just had to do it.

Speaker 1

Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1

Some long shots here just to have some fun, but inflation and, no comment.

Speaker 1

That's that's I think

Speaker 0

we can get no comment and replacement in the same one.

Speaker 0

I'm gonna have no comment on my future replacement.

Speaker 0

I I think that's it.

Speaker 1

I think

Speaker 3

that's a lot.

Speaker 1

That could be it.

Speaker 0

I like that.

Speaker 1

That could be it.

Speaker 1

Well,

Speaker 0

any minute he'll be coming in here for possibly what we all believe is the final time.

Speaker 0

We'll get one last look at the purple tie.

Speaker 0

We'll get one last good afternoon as we dive in.

Speaker 0

And here he comes as I perfectly set it up for the last time, Fed Chair Powell.

Speaker 3

Purple.

Speaker 0

Alright, Crypto one hundred one fam.

Speaker 0

A story I don't talk about at all is back in college, I played college football at a division one level.

Speaker 0

Back then I could eat whatever I want, hit the gym, do the program, and stay in great shape.

Speaker 0

I didn't even have to think about it.

Speaker 0

Now that I'm older, in my thirties, it's a totally different story.

Speaker 0

And nobody loves a good dad bod more than me.

Speaker 0

But with the summer coming up, I was thinking maybe I should lean out a little bit.

Speaker 0

And my friends and I started looking into how we could achieve this.

Speaker 0

And instead of going down this peptide route or testosterone route where you gotta do all these needles and stuff, we didn't wanna do that.

Speaker 0

We were looking for something more similar.

Speaker 0

And so that's where we found Mars Men.

Speaker 0

Listen, you lose muscle faster and store more fat as you get older, and a big reason for that is testosterone.

Speaker 0

Most guys levels start dropping in their early thirties, and it makes it easier to gain fat, especially around the midsection.

Speaker 0

And the more fat you gain, the more your body converts testosterone into estrogen.

Speaker 0

It just makes it a never ending cycle.

Speaker 0

But Mars Men, it's a natural supplement designed to support healthy testosterone levels, helping your body burn fat and build lean muscle more efficiently.

Speaker 0

No weird stimulants, just ingredients like Tonga Ali, zinc, and boron.

Speaker 0

Listen.

Speaker 0

I have friends that have taken this.

Speaker 0

They're saying they have more consistent energy.

Speaker 0

They're stronger in the gym.

Speaker 0

They have better focus, and they're leaning out a little bit as well.

Speaker 0

Less cravings, better recovery, just more dialed in overall.

Speaker 0

And listen, if you're interested in trying this, it's something that again, you don't have to worry about needles and shots and peptides.

Speaker 0

It's just a pill.

Speaker 0

It's delivered to you and there's a ninety day money back guarantee, so there's no risk at all.

Speaker 0

Over ninety one percent of users report higher energy and the reviews speak for themselves.

The economic outlook remains highly uncertain, and the conflict in The Middle East has added to this uncertainty.

Speaker 3

In the near term, higher energy prices will push up overall inflation.

Speaker 3

Beyond that, the scope and duration of potential effects on the economy remain unclear, as does the future course of the conflict itself.

Speaker 3

We will continue to monitor the risks to both sides of our dual mandate.

Speaker 3

We are well positioned to determine the extent and timing of additional adjustments to our policy rate based on the incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks.

Speaker 3

Monetary policy is not on a preset course, and we will make our decisions on a meeting by meeting basis.

Speaker 3

This is my last press conference as chair, and I will close with a few thoughts.

Speaker 3

First, I want to congratulate Kevin Walsh on his advancement out of the Senate Banking Committee this morning.

Speaker 3

This is an important step forward and I wish him well as that process continues.

Speaker 1

Huge blunder.

Speaker 3

The Federal Reserve exists for one fundamental purpose, to foster the economic conditions in which American families and businesses can thrive.

Speaker 3

Stable prices, a strong job market, and a financial system they can depend on.

Speaker 3

Every decision we make, whether about interest rates or regulatory and supervisory matters or other issues, is made in service of that purpose.

Speaker 3

Our decisions reflect the collective judgment of the Board of Governors and the Federal Open Market Committee, colleagues who demonstrate analytical rigor, principled judgment, and a genuine commitment to the public interest.

Speaker 3

Our collaborative and deliberative process has long reflected a shared commitment to finding common ground in service to our mission.

Speaker 3

This institution is resilient, capable, and staffed by professionals of extraordinary talent and exceptional dedication.

Speaker 3

It has been a privilege to serve alongside so many great public servants at the Board of Governors and around the Federal Reserve System.

Speaker 3

The Fed's work is only as effective as the public's understanding of it, and you, the press, are essential to keeping the public informed about what we do and why.

Speaker 3

The people we serve benefit from your careful reporting.

Speaker 3

I welcomed the announcement last Friday by the US Attorney for the District Of Columbia that she had closed the criminal investigation.

Speaker 3

She also noted, however, that she would not hesitate to restart the investigation.

Speaker 3

Over the weekend, the Department of Justice provided assurances that they will not reopen the investigation unless there's a criminal referral from the Fed's Inspector General, and absent such a referral, if they do appeal the recent court decision, they would not seek as part of that appeal to restart the investigation or send new subpoenas.

Speaker 3

I've said that I will not leave the Board until this investigation is well and truly over with transparency and finality, and I stand by that.

Speaker 3

I'm encouraged by recent developments, and I'm watching the remaining steps in this process carefully.

Speaker 3

My decisions on these matters will continue to be guided entirely by what I believe is in the best interest of the institution and the people we serve.

Speaker 3

After my term as chair ends on May 15, I will continue to serve as a governor for a period of time be determined.

Speaker 3

I plan to keep a low profile as a governor.

Speaker 3

There's only ever one chair of the Federal Reserve Board.

Speaker 3

When Kevin Walsh is confirmed and sworn in, he will be that chair.

Speaker 3

Once sworn in as board chair, his new colleagues will elect him to chair the FOMC as well.

Speaker 3

As I regularly

Speaker 5

Can you not say

Speaker 3

what's holding?

Speaker 3

Our success in delivering our goals matters for all Americans.

Speaker 3

I'm confident that the Fed will continue to do its work with objectivity, integrity, and a deep commitment to serve the American people.

Speaker 3

Thank you, and I look forward to your questions.

Speaker 6

Thank you, mister chair.

Speaker 6

Appreciate the kind words about the press.

Speaker 6

Often doesn't come from the podium in different places, but appreciate that.

Speaker 6

Can you talk about what is gone into your decision to remain on the board?

Speaker 6

What kind of criteria are you weighing and how long might

Speaker 3

you stay?

Speaker 3

Thank you.

Speaker 3

Sure.

Speaker 3

So, you know, my my concern is really about the series of legal attacks on the Fed, which threaten our ability to conduct monetary policy without considering political factors.

Speaker 3

And I I wanna note here, this has nothing whatever to do with verbal criticism by elected officials.

Speaker 3

I I've never suggested that such verbal criticism is a problem and neither has anyone else here.

Speaker 3

But these legal actions by the administration are unprecedented in our one hundred and thirteen year history, and there are ongoing threats, of additional such actions.

Speaker 3

I I worry that these attacks are battering the institution and putting at risk the thing that really matters to the public, which is the ability to conduct monetary policy without taking into consideration political factors.

Speaker 3

It is so important for our economy, for the people that we serve, that they can depend over time on a central bank that operates that way free of political influence.

Speaker 3

It's part of the absolute foundation of this amazing economy that we have.

Speaker 3

It's just one of the many reasons why The U.

Speaker 3

美

Speaker 3

Economy is the envy of the world.

Speaker 3

That piece of an institutional architecture separates successful countries from unsuccessful countries.

Speaker 3

It is extremely important, not for the people who work at the Fed at any given time, but for the people that we serve, that the Fed remain able to conduct monetary policy in a way that doesn't get pulled into politics, trying to help or hurt any particular politician or political party.

Speaker 3

It's critical for the people that we serve.

Speaker 3

In terms of when I would leave, I I will leave when I when I think it's appropriate to do so.

Speaker 3

Was that all your questions or was that?

Speaker 6

Well, I just have a follow-up which is what would you say to the criticism that by remaining on the board, you're actually taking a political act and denying President Trump the majority of the board which as president he would have if

Speaker 0

you like.

Speaker 0

The president, Powell.

Speaker 3

I I don't see that at all.

Speaker 3

As I mentioned, you know, I'm literally staying because of the actions that have been taken.

Speaker 3

I I had long planned to be retiring and you know the things that have happened in really in the last three months have I think left me no choice but to stay until I see them through at least that long.

Speaker 3

You know in addition, I don't see how this will interfere.

Speaker 3

My intention is not to interfere.

Speaker 3

You know, I was a governor But for for only this picture,

Speaker 0

I wonder if you're the president's

Speaker 1

next day.

Speaker 3

Question is at the Fed that governors who understand how difficult the role of chair is, and as a soon to be former chair, I do understand how hard it is to get consensus with 19 strong minded people.

Speaker 3

You work with the chair.

Speaker 3

You try to be heard, but also collaborate with the chair and try to support the chair when you can.

Speaker 3

When you can't, you can't.

Speaker 3

And I think that's the attitude that people generally take and that's the attitude that I'll take.

Speaker 7

Nick.

Speaker 0

Sam.

Speaker 8

If I could ask about the inflation outlook.

Speaker 8

In March, you described the standard practice of looking through energy shocks as conditional on inflation expectations staying anchored.

Speaker 8

Since that meeting, there has been very little progress reopening, key energy trade corridors.

Speaker 8

Can you help us understand how the inflation outlook has changed in the intermeeting period beginning with the prospects for tariff pass through resolving on the timeline that you had outlined in March before getting to the energy shock that is now on top?

Speaker 3

So, you know, I would look at it this way.

Speaker 3

For a long time, we've been working on the hypothesis really that tariffs would lead to a one time price increase and that that would go away over time.

Speaker 3

In other words, there would be no further change, so measured inflation wouldn't reflect that higher level going up more and more.

Speaker 3

And it's time for that to happen.

Speaker 3

You know, we really do expect that to be happening in the next two quarters.

Speaker 3

So we'll be watching very carefully to see that what we've thought all along would happen.

Speaker 3

The kind of critical part of the forecast.

Speaker 3

We we need to really see that.

Speaker 3

With with energy, it's it's so hard to say.

Speaker 3

I I mentioned, you know, in, you know, sort of the textbook, you you would look through it an oil shock because they tend to be short lived and they tend to revert and monetary policy works with long and variable lags.

Speaker 3

So, you know, you wouldn't necessarily react right away.

Speaker 3

I think that is all the more true given that we're several years above 2% inflation and that we're already looking through the tariff shock.

Speaker 3

So I think we're going to be very cautious about that.

Speaker 3

It's but the question about about looking through energy really is not not in front of us right now.

Speaker 3

It hasn't even peaked yet and I think we'd want to see the backside of that and progress on tariffs before we even thought about reducing rates.

Speaker 8

So if I could follow-up.

Speaker 8

The statement today preserves language that has taken on some meaning as it was socialized when the committee was actively lowering rates.

Speaker 8

Why is that easing bias still ripe given how different the inflation outlook is now versus a meeting or two ago and what more would have to happen for it to get evicted?

Speaker 3

So, that was, as you will recall, we had a discussion about that at the last meeting and we talked about it in the press conference after the March meeting.

Speaker 3

We had the same today.

Speaker 3

We had quite a vigorous discussion about that very issue and the guidance and is it still appropriate and that kind of thing.

Speaker 3

And I would say that the, you know, number of people on the committee who either could support that language change changing to a more neutral stance so that the hike is as likely as a cut.

Speaker 3

That number has increased over the intermeeting period and it's easy to see why.

Speaker 3

I mean, it's it's it's it's a good question, right?

Speaker 3

You see, inflation has moved up over the interim a bit.

Speaker 3

Core inflation is three.

Speaker 3

Two now.

Speaker 3

Moving albeit just a little bit in the wrong direction and we know that there will be you know that there's headline inflation coming out of The Gulf and we don't know how much that will be.

Speaker 3

We just we're going to need to see.

Speaker 3

So it makes all the sense in the world that people would look at that and we'd have a vigorous discussion about that.

Speaker 3

You saw that three people dissented over the language.

Speaker 3

I think all of those people agreed with rate decision.

Speaker 3

So the majority of the committee did not want to do that and I didn't think we needed to do it this meeting.

Speaker 3

It really was just a question of what's why do we need to do that now?

Speaker 3

You know, we have so much to learn.

Speaker 3

There's so much uncertainty about the path ahead.

Speaker 3

There doesn't need to be any rush to make that decision now because, you know, what what happens in the next thirty, sixty days, even by the next meeting, could really change the picture around that around that language.

Speaker 3

So, you know, it was a it was a much closer thing on the committee than it was in March.

Speaker 3

And, you know, that makes all the sense in the world, it seems to me.

Speaker 4

Claire.

Speaker 9

So Claire Jones, Financial Times.

Speaker 9

Just just going back to this issue of the the easing bias.

Speaker 9

We've now got oil approaching $120 a barrel when it comes to the benchmark Brent crude.

Speaker 9

If it stays around those levels six weeks from now, what would be your guess best guess as to whether the easing bias will still be in the statement?

Speaker 9

Thank you.

Speaker 3

I I wouldn't wanna guess.

Speaker 3

You know, well, first of all, we're gonna have new leadership in all likelihood by then and and new leadership's gonna have a very important role to play in that.

Speaker 3

So, I won't be standing here at this podium to answer your question.

Speaker 3

So, I don't know.

Speaker 3

As I mentioned, that's all I can really say is that we had a great discussion about that today.

Speaker 3

It's you know, it's gotten to be a better question than the interim period.

Speaker 3

We had the discussion.

Speaker 3

The majority are still on the page of not feeling the need to move to that level, and I I that's where I am.

Speaker 3

I I get it, though.

Speaker 3

You know, at a certain point, you would move, and that that conceivably could come as soon as the next meeting.

Speaker 9

Thank you.

Speaker 9

Just a follow-up.

Speaker 0

Margaret's not gonna like

Speaker 3

各位。

that folks.

Speaker 9

Seem rather lukewarm on press conferences and on the dot plots.

Speaker 9

What would your advice to him be on these communication tools?

Speaker 3

So I'm I'm not gonna give him any advice through you today here, but I've, you know, I think communications generally is, I think every incoming chair takes a look at communications and it's a very healthy thing.

Speaker 3

I mean, is, it's very complex and, you know, you can always be looking at new things and if that happens, feels like it's going to happen, that's a completely appropriate thing.

Speaker 9

您好,

Hi,

Speaker 10

Chair Powell, Dealing with Goldman Sachs.

Speaker 10

Can you tell us if you've been in touch with incoming Chairman Borsch?

Speaker 10

Any to what extent is this a normal transition process versus all the things swirling around, something unusual, and what can we expect when he takes that podium in a few weeks?

Speaker 3

I haven't seen since seeing him at a dinner in January where I congratulated him and had a nice chat with him.

Speaker 3

Haven't seen him.

Speaker 3

I don't know what a normal process is.

Speaker 3

You know, the last process was with Janet Yellen, with whom I had worked for six years, and so it was, you know, we were sitting down the hall from each other, so it was a very different thing.

Speaker 3

I think this is and will be a very normal standard kind of a kind of a transition process.

Speaker 3

So, that's that's what I expect.

Speaker 3

I have every reason to think it will be.

Speaker 10

Quick follow-up.

Speaker 10

Is the supreme court ruling on governor Cook a factor in when

Speaker 0

you may leave as a governor?

Speaker 3

I wasn't thinking of it as such, but no, not really.

Speaker 3

I mean, I'm thinking more of the other things I mentioned.

Speaker 4

Chris.

Speaker 2

你好。

Hi.

Speaker 2

Thanks for taking our question.

Speaker 2

I wanted to ask a question about your tenure and Chris Rugaber at Associated Press.

Speaker 2

During your tenure as chair, you often spoke about how disadvantaged Americans benefited from extended periods of low unemployment.

Speaker 2

In the new framework the Fed adopted in 2020, some economists say elevated the Fed's employment mandate.

Speaker 2

Are you worried that the pandemic inflation spike that followed will make future Fed shares more reluctant to pursue a hot jobs market and should they be?

Speaker 3

I don't know the answer to that.

Speaker 3

I mean, what we so what we experienced in in the teens, the mid teens was really low levels of unemployment for a long period of time and no reaction from inflation and we all took very much took notice of that.

Speaker 3

We also noticed that the biggest wage gains were going to people at the bottom end of the income spectrum.

Speaker 3

And we had many, many reports of, I mean, it felt like a fairly stable equilibrium and a lot of benefits were flowing to people at the bottom end of the income spectrum including companies were, you know, setting up in, you know, people who are confined and and like training them before they got out and it was it was a very healthy sort of set of societal dynamics.

Speaker 3

So, course, I think anybody would love to get back to that.

Speaker 3

Don't think that anything that happened to create the global pandemic inflation was in any way related to overweighting the employment market.

Speaker 3

I mean, it was a global shock that happened essentially very, very similarly all over the world that had to do with closing, reopening, stimulus and all that.

Speaker 3

And I mean, you could look at a graph of 10 big economies on the page and not know which was The US and which was Germany, France and things like that.

Speaker 3

So I don't think that insight was in any way responsible for the high inflation that we experienced.

Speaker 3

So, I mean, I think it's always been a balance.

Speaker 3

You've got to be strong on both of our dual mandates and we just, for example, now we don't feel that the labor market is at all a source of inflation.

Speaker 3

So, we don't need to be worrying about that.

Speaker 3

It's been a long time since we have had to worry about that.

Speaker 3

Well, actually, during during the pandemic recovery, the labor market was super overheated and tight and that's when we had to worry about it but but not now.

Speaker 2

And just on the other issue, are you would you need do you need more assurance from the Justice Department before stepping down?

Speaker 2

Is that what you're waiting for or what else?

Speaker 3

I'm waiting for for the investigation to be well and truly over with finality and transparency and I'm waiting for that and I will leave when I think it's appropriate to do so.

Speaker 4

Michael

Speaker 11

McKee.

Speaker 11

Michael McKee from Bloomberg Television Radio.

Speaker 11

I'd like to ask you if you could explain a little more or characterize a little more the discussion about the two sided view and interest rates because there were some members of the open market committee who have been suggesting that we may need to raise interest rates even absent the war because inflation was not coming down fast enough.

Speaker 11

Is there any sense that interest rates might have to go up or was this just a setup to sort of warn people that you're worried about the war impacts?

Speaker 3

So nobody the three dissenters and and others who could have supported that and others who were, you know, who were voters and prefer nonvoters who preferred it, they all supported the right decision, right?

Speaker 3

So, people are not saying we need to hike now.

Speaker 3

It's more a question of, you know, don't we kind of feel that we should be neutral and markets are markets, what are markets doing?

Speaker 3

People argue that this is consistent with markets are doing.

Speaker 3

And again, it's a very fair question, but you know, these changes, there is, you know, it's a form of forward guidance and you want to make, you don't want to make them, you want to make them in a way that will be sustained and continue to make sense and not something you need to take back fairly quickly.

Speaker 3

So I think we just a group of us, including me, didn't feel like we needed to be in a hurry on that markets are not confused about our reaction function, we don't have a problem to solve on that, but the other side of the argument is a good argument too, as I mentioned, it's a perfectly good argument to be having, good discussion to be having, so, and it came out the way it came out.

Speaker 11

Well, you've got, three dissents, in favor of, two sided, warning.

Speaker 11

You've got yourself staying on the board.

Speaker 11

You've got the criticism that does come from elected officials, and you've got a lot of, critics who have faulted the fed for being too slow 2000, '21 with inflation.

Speaker 11

Are you worried about fed credibility under all of this?

Speaker 11

Is that one reason that you wanna stay on?

Speaker 3

Not not driving my my thinking now.

Speaker 3

I mean, monetary policy is going to get made by, you know, 19 people.

Speaker 3

There's a lot of stability there.

Speaker 3

I mean, if you think about it, any every new fair Fed chair has the same situation, which is you've got 18 colleagues on the FOMC, 11 of them vote during any year, and you have to, your job is to create consensus, it's to talk to them, understand them, you know, be inside their thinking, and be able to pull them together and get consensus and move.

Speaker 3

And that's what every Fed chair has to do.

Speaker 3

I think Kevin Warsh is actually quite well, he has the capabilities, skills to be very good at that, I would think.

Speaker 3

So, I think I'm not so worried about that process.

Speaker 3

You know, I think that'll work itself out.

Speaker 4

Howard.

Speaker 12

Thank you, Chair Powell.

Speaker 12

Howard Schneider with Reuters.

Speaker 12

You you mentioned that, staying on as a governor, you intend to keep a low profile.

Speaker 12

I'm just wondering if you could give us a little more detail on what that looks like and how you can touche.

Speaker 12

What that yeah, walk down the steps.

Speaker 12

What that looks like, and particularly around the policy discussion, how you're able to have your intervention and not be a shadowed chair and not have a kind of an outsized influence over the process.

Speaker 3

Yeah, you know, that's just something I would never do.

Speaker 3

You know, the shadow chair thing.

Speaker 3

No, it's, you know, I it's it's I I don't know what the exact specifics of it will be but I'm going back to being a governor.

Speaker 3

I respect the role of chair.

Speaker 3

I, you know, I was a chair.

Speaker 3

I was a governor for six years and I know what that's like.

Speaker 3

I know what and I I had a a you know, pretty front row seat with particularly with with chair Yellen to whom I I was close when I when I I was worked with chairman Bernanke for two years but you know, I I I was brand new at that time.

Speaker 3

So, I got a sense of what it was and I had real sympathy for how hard it is to get that group to consensus and I always felt like I, you know, I don't want to add to that unnecessarily and that means try to support the chairs where the chair, the direction the chair wants to go and if you can, if you can't, you can't, but and I think that's that's the way it's always worked there because the chair only has one vote plus the ability to develop consensus and if people won't be, you know, they they won't, if they're not flexible at all, then, how do you ever do that?

Speaker 3

And so, that's why the chair has, the authority the chair has, really, is to develop relationships with people and work with them and then and then put something forward that has consensus and I, you know, I I propose to be a very constructive participant in that process.

Speaker 3

Really out of respect for for the office of the chair.

Speaker 12

And in your view as a a soon to be governor, how do you see the risks of oil prices bleeding into core inflation in coming weeks?

Speaker 12

Because that was it seems like the commentary that was coming from particularly some of the reserve bank presidents, they were elevated concerns about the bleed into core.

Speaker 12

And, you know, here we are with three dissents now.

Speaker 12

What do you see as the prospect of a correlation?

Speaker 3

You know, prospects are real.

Speaker 3

Remember, though, they're real and the real thing is we're going to have to wait and see.

Speaker 3

We're going to need to see.

Speaker 3

And the good news is we think our policy stance is just is in a very good place for us to wait and see.

Speaker 3

We're right kind of at the high end of neutral or perhaps mildly restrictive.

Speaker 3

The labor market shows more and more signs of stability, whereas inflation is kind of misbehaving, and so maybe a little bit of restriction or the high end of neutral is just the right place to be.

Speaker 3

So we can wait here and see how things work out before we act, And we'll see how much that, you know, how much does come through in decor.

Speaker 3

You see it already in airfares, of course, but you may see it in many other places.

Speaker 3

Know, we just don't know yet, and it's so unknown because how long will the strait be closed?

Speaker 3

You can develop any number of scenarios that you want but we really won't know until we know so fortunately we're in a good place to wait and let things develop.

Speaker 13

Thanks, mister chairman.

Speaker 13

You started holding post, post meeting press conferences for every meeting as opposed to the ones with just, with SEPs.

Speaker 13

Can you talk about why you see that as a net positive?

Speaker 3

So we we always said when we were doing quarterly press conferences, we always said, we can move at any meeting but we only ever moved at the quarterly SEP meetings where we had the press conference.

Speaker 3

So, if you think about it, you know, we during the pandemic, we were moving like a lot at every meeting and sometimes between meetings and doing that with our press conference, I think would have been quite challenging.

Speaker 3

It's become the industry norm.

Speaker 3

It's the standard.

Speaker 3

I don't know whether that has to remain that way.

Speaker 3

I don't know.

Speaker 3

I mean, I it's it's just something people have become used to and I I do think it's quite helpful to, you know, to I mean, I I try to deliver a message on behalf of the committee rather than 18 people, 18 other people going out and delivering their message and it's, you know, it's gonna be all over the place because we do, thankfully, have

Speaker 13

widely disparate views.

Speaker 13

Okay, thanks.

Speaker 13

The other thing I wanted to ask about was the communications review from last year.

Speaker 13

Could you describe the debate last year?

Speaker 13

What changes were considered?

Speaker 13

What you wanted?

Speaker 13

And what prevented action, any action on those changes?

Speaker 3

So yeah, I'm not going to go into the real small specifics, but what we found very quickly was that making making changes, making really large changes, for example, to the dot plot or the SEP, it didn't have, we couldn't come up with anything that had really broad support on the committee and so we just moved on.

Speaker 3

We didn't really do as much on that as we might have.

Speaker 3

And, you know, I was never the world's biggest fan of the dot plot, but you can't beat something with nothing.

Speaker 3

And, you know, there's a, we've looked at a bunch of things, and you know, it's something, like I said, I think every new chair is going to look at our suite of communications and think about what would be changes.

Speaker 3

We are the only major central bank that doesn't publish a forecast, and that's because we have a 19 person committee and, you know, you try to do it, you try to do that on the at the board, that's hard.

Speaker 3

At the at the committee, that's hard.

Speaker 3

It's hard if you do it at the staff.

Speaker 3

So it it's, you know, it's been it works.

Speaker 3

I think our communications are fine, but looking at doing it in a different and better way is the most natural thing in the world.

Speaker 14

Thank you.

Speaker 14

Colby Smith with the New York Times.

Speaker 14

If I could follow-up on Mike's question about hikes, are we right to assume that the hawkish outcome for the Fed is still one in which the committee just extends the pause in rate cuts?

Speaker 14

And to what extent is there a growing sense within the committee that monetary policy really isn't just restrictive at all right now?

Speaker 14

The economy is holding up relatively well despite this major energy shock.

Speaker 14

The unemployment rate has ticked lower.

Speaker 14

Inflation was moving sideways even before the war and is now moving higher.

Speaker 14

So so where is the committee at on that debate?

Speaker 3

You know, where we're at is we think our really, we think our policy rate is in a good place.

Speaker 3

If we need to hike, we will we will certainly signal that and we will and we will certainly do it.

Speaker 3

And if we need to to cut, then if it's appropriate to cut, then we'll signal the opposite.

Speaker 3

I think because we feel like we're in a good place to move in either direction, nobody's calling for a hike right now.

Speaker 3

So it really is going to depend on how things evolve.

Speaker 3

And you know, that's really where it is.

Speaker 3

As I mentioned, closer question this cycle on changing the guidance, but ultimately we didn't.

Speaker 14

And as it relates to the war, at what point do you think the risk to growth will be larger than the risk to inflation as this conflict drags on?

Speaker 3

You know, you just have to find that out empirically.

Speaker 3

You know, with given our, the fact that we're, you know, a big exporter of energy and that our economy is far less energy intensive, oil intensive than it was during the seventies, you know, the the effects on The United States are really substantially less than those of Western Europe or Asia, who are feeling much greater effects from these things.

Speaker 3

The effects we're feeling in, you know, in the current situation, currently and in sort of what's priced in, which is, you know, a relatively quick outcome.

Speaker 3

If this goes on for much longer and prices go much higher, then we'll feel that much more.

Speaker 3

And, of course, I'm talking about aggregate inflation numbers.

Speaker 3

We know we're very well aware that people are experiencing higher gas prices all over the country now and that hurts.

Speaker 3

That's and these are those those hikes may continue to happen.

Speaker 3

And other things are going to start to reflect airline fares I mentioned and other products and services that are dependent upon petroleum and derivatives of petroleum.

Speaker 3

People are going to start to feel that.

Speaker 6

Edward.

Speaker 15

Thank you.

Speaker 15

Thank you, Trevor.

Speaker 15

Edward Lawrence with Fox Business.

Speaker 15

So, I guess I'll just ask you directly on this.

Speaker 15

The markets don't see a rate cut at all this year is what they're predicting.

Speaker 15

Do you think that we are at the neutral rate?

Speaker 15

Why or why not?

Speaker 3

You know, the the neutral rate is a we cannot know it with, with certainty.

Speaker 3

I think pretty close to the neutral rate.

Speaker 3

对的。

Yeah.

Speaker 3

I I always had it, you know, between 34%.

Speaker 3

We're a little north of three and a half.

Speaker 3

So, that's well in the range of what I would consider a reasonable reasonable but at the higher end of the range of what I would consider reasonable neutral rate.

Speaker 3

You know, I think you're the the labor market is still probably cooling off just a little bit and I don't think there's much of a case for any case really for policy looking meaningfully restrictive, maybe mildly restrictive or neutral, I would say.

Speaker 15

And I wanna follow-up on some of the other questions about, your future a little bit.

Speaker 15

The the first time we've seen the four dissents now since October 1992, are you handing off a divided Fed?

Speaker 3

You know, the the thing to remember is we have always had vigorous debates and they're excellent debates.

Speaker 3

Have to say they've been really good and in an unusually difficult situation.

Speaker 3

So we've really had four supply shocks.

Speaker 3

You can actually can you can say more than four, but at a minimum, we've we had the pandemic.

Speaker 3

We had the invasion of the of Ukraine.

Speaker 3

We had tariffs, and now we have of Iran and the oil you know, the oil spike.

Speaker 3

So those every every supply shock has the capability of driving inflation up and unemployment up.

Speaker 3

And and what do you do?

Speaker 3

You know, you're it's it's the central bank has a really hard time knowing what to do.

Speaker 3

So the right thing to do is to try to balance the achievement of those two goals and that's what our framework calls for us to do.

Speaker 3

But these are really tough, difficult judgments.

Speaker 3

You've got to have a forecast for each variable.

Speaker 3

You've got to think how long it's going to take to get back to target.

Speaker 3

You got to think how restrictive or not is policy.

Speaker 3

So, it's only natural that you have a range of views on the committee.

Speaker 3

You know, people are going to see it different ways.

Speaker 3

They're going to have different risk tolerances and that kind of thing.

Speaker 3

I mean, if everybody agreed that would be would be surprising and I think it's only it's partly a function of the extraordinarily challenging set of supply shocks that we've been dealing with now for five, six years.

Speaker 16

Thank you so much, chair Powell.

Speaker 16

Selena Wayne with ABC News.

Speaker 16

Are you confident that Kevin Walsh will stand up to political pressure from president Trump?

Speaker 3

So he he testified very strongly to that effect in his hearing, and I and I'll I'll take him at his word.

Speaker 16

And when it comes to gas, right now, it's over $4 a gallon.

Speaker 16

Inflation just hit a two year high.

Speaker 16

Should Americans expect to be paying higher gas prices for the rest of this year?

Speaker 16

And in your view, does that take a rate cut off of the table?

Speaker 16

And secondly, by staying on as, Fed governor, what message do you think you're sending to the president?

Speaker 3

I I don't know what gas prices are gonna do for the rest of the year.

Speaker 3

And it will depend on how long the strait remains closed and how quickly it can be reopened and that kind of thing.

Speaker 3

But remember, when gas prices go up, that's disposable income coming out of people's pockets.

Speaker 3

So they're going to spend less on other things.

Speaker 3

So there will be a hit to GDP.

Speaker 3

It's a, you know, it's a question whether spending, you know, goes down to offset the inflationary effects.

Speaker 3

So it's not the answer isn't obvious ex ante whether you should move your rate because of that.

Speaker 3

We'll have to see how it evolves.

Speaker 16

And the message is that's the question.

Speaker 16

Mind staying on?

Speaker 3

I'll stand on what I said earlier.

Speaker 4

Victoria.

Speaker 17

你好。

Hi.

Speaker 17

Victoria Guilla with Politico.

Speaker 17

During your tenure, Fed independence has come under pressure in a lot of different ways.

Speaker 8

由总统

By the

Speaker 17

president.

Speaker 17

And I just wondering, practically speaking, where do you see Fed independence as coming from?

Speaker 17

Is it the law?

Speaker 17

Is it political support from Congress?

Speaker 17

Is it the actions of the Fed?

Speaker 17

What sustains Fed independence?

Speaker 3

Well, it's, you know, it's it's to to a significant extent, it is the law and, you know, we've had to go to court to successfully so far to defend it.

Speaker 3

But, you know, the the law does create a setting in which the Fed can and is directed to, make monetary policy without consideration of political factors.

Speaker 3

And so so part of it is law, but but it goes beyond that, though.

Speaker 3

There's a set of customs.

Speaker 3

There's a there's a boundary line between the Fed and the administration, between the Fed and the Treasury Department, and we need to respect those continue to respect those boundaries about what the Fed is responsible for and what the Treasury is responsible for and what the the rest of the administration's responsible.

Speaker 3

So some some of it is legal.

Speaker 3

In fact, it's all legal at the end of the day but there it's it's more than just monetary policy.

Speaker 3

We, you know, we don't we don't wanna use our tools to, we haven't wanted to use our tools to achieve goals that are really clearly outside our mandate.

Speaker 3

Every administration looks at our tools and thinks that would be good to repurpose those to serve other purposes, but that gets dragged that's dragging us into politics and into fiscal policy, so we've resisted that.

Speaker 17

Well, maybe another way of asking it too is, do you think that Fed independence is as strong now as when you became chair, and if so, why?

Speaker 3

Look, I think it's at risk.

Speaker 3

I mean, I think these these, you know, these legal assaults, if you will, as I mentioned, you know, the institution is being battered over these things.

Speaker 3

We're having to resort to, you know, the courts to enforce our legal, you know, it's not so much independence, it's really the ability to monetary, to make monetary policy without political considerations.

Speaker 3

That's what we're talking about, and we've had to do that and we've been successful so far, but that's not over.

Speaker 3

None of that is concluded yet, and it's, you know, it's really important.

Speaker 3

It's not about people who work at the Fed or the institution.

Speaker 3

It's about the benefits of a central bank that makes decisions based on analysis and our best thinking, rather than, you know, trying to help or hurt politicians.

Speaker 3

It's, you know, that there's there's a bright line between central banks who do one and do the other and successful countries have uniformly successful advanced economy countries have a really strong set of protections around their central bank just for that reason.

Speaker 3

So that's what it's all about.

Speaker 3

I think I am confident as I said in my remarks that the Fed will continue to make its decision based on analysis, rigorous analysis, and not on political considerations, but we've had to fight for it.

Speaker 3

And I'd, you know, I'd like to think that, you know, I'd like to think we can get out of that era and go back to respecting, you know, what the law says and what custom has been, which is to, you know, let the Fed do our thing.

Speaker 3

We're, you know, we're not, we're, it's an institution full of human beings who work super hard to get things right for the benefit of the public.

Speaker 3

We're all human.

Speaker 3

Don't expect for perfection.

Speaker 3

But do expect us to make, you know, decisions without political considerations and the very best analysis we can bring.

Speaker 18

Katerina.

Speaker 18

Katarina Sarayva, Bloomberg News.

Speaker 18

How would you characterize, what you've heard from your colleagues on your decision to stay?

Speaker 18

Do you have their support?

Speaker 18

And then have you heard concern from your colleagues, about continued legal attacks from, the executive branch?

Speaker 18

Is this something that others have, you know, talked to you about?

Speaker 3

So I think that I don't want to report on what my colleagues think.

Speaker 3

They can speak for themselves.

Speaker 3

But, you know, yeah, there are widespread concerns that these things may continue.

Speaker 3

That's all I'll say.

Speaker 3

And, you know, and that would be a problem.

Speaker 3

所以……

And so

Speaker 18

And then I just also wanted to ask about, governor Waller's speech on the reserve banks.

Speaker 18

What you know, do you have any thoughts on on centralizing some of those functions in the way he described?

Speaker 18

And then have you know, do you are you concerned that something like that could potentially be a slippery slope to, you know, to consolidate reserve bank functions even more in such a way where you, you know, the central bank ultimately loses some of that important regional information?

Speaker 18

所以

So

Speaker 3

we try to be good stewards of the public's money and efficient.

Speaker 3

And Chris in particular, Chris Waller is particularly passionate about that.

Speaker 3

Of course, so are the reserve, so are the president's, and President?

Speaker 3

You know, it's a question of how do you How

Speaker 0

do I know?

Speaker 3

Push it.

Speaker 3

We, of course, and and Chris said this in his speech, we, you know, we want 12 strong independent central banks with their own staffs and their own monetary policy views and all that.

Speaker 0

It hit.

Speaker 0

I'm cashing out right now.

Speaker 3

You know, there are things that are done in all 12, which could well be done at one much more efficiently than with cost savings.

Speaker 3

And so Winners, Brian.

Speaker 3

Winners, Clay.

Speaker 3

On that, but everybody everybody's on the same page.

Speaker 3

The other thing you touched on was was the idea of removing reserve bank presidents from office over different different views on monetary policy and I would I would just agree with him so strongly that that would be the beginning of the end of of the Fed's ability to to make monetary policy independently.

Speaker 3

If every administration could come in and do that, you're you're just another cabinet agency at that point.

Speaker 3

So, that's not something that I would support.

Speaker 3

Chris said the same thing.

Speaker 4

Christine.

Speaker 7

Thanks, Chair Powell.

Speaker 7

Christine Romans, NBC News.

Speaker 7

I wanna ask about legacy.

Speaker 7

When the history books are written, how do you think your stewardship at the Fed will be remembered for the past eight years?

Speaker 3

Wrong analogy.

Speaker 3

Just say that, that's for that's for someone else to say.

Speaker 3

I'll give you a mulligan on that.

Speaker 7

Alright.

Speaker 7

I'm gonna ask you about if Jude said no comments.

Speaker 7

Behaving inflation then.

Speaker 7

You talked about those four big shocks, supply shocks over the past five years, and in inflation still misbehaving.

Speaker 7

What's your message to American families who feel like inflation has not been under control for them really since since the COVID reopening?

Speaker 0

That locking good inflation to bring inflation

Speaker 3

back down to 2% and and sustainably.

Speaker 3

That's that's our goal, and we will we'll stick at it until that happens.

Speaker 3

We keep getting these events keep happening which keep driving up costs, and, you know, the best thing we can do is to use our tools to guide inflation back down to 2%.

Speaker 3

I think trying to get there really quickly could be very costly in terms of of job loss and things like that, but we try to get there over time in a way that does the least damage possible, and, you know, our commitment to that is never ending and unshakable.

Speaker 7

How would you describe the economy outside of the misbehaving inflation?

Speaker 7

I mean, it's still awfully resilient given all of the blows.

Speaker 3

Inflation can be awfully resilient, so it's actually quite resilient I would say because it's a positive thing if I have that amendment.

Speaker 3

Yeah, you know growth is really solid across our economy.
