I'm Andrew.
And today, in just a moment, I'll be joined by my cohost, Anna.
I've got a question for you.
What's something you're always happy to spend money on no matter what it costs?
And on the flip side, what's something you absolutely refuse to pay for even when it's cheap?
If you really start thinking about it, our spending habits are kind of strange.
Sometimes we'll happily drop money on things like coffee or movie tickets without thinking twice.
And then other times, we'll spend an hour on a subway to go to a physical store so that we can buy something in real life instead of having to pay for a shipping fee for online shopping.
Well, today, Anna and I, we're gonna get into all of this, and we're gonna talk about the psychology of spending money.
We'll chat about the things that we're happy to splurge on and the things that we won't pay for no matter what, and also some of the interesting tricks that companies use to get us to spend more money.
We'll get started in just a moment.

I hope you learn a lot.
Here we go.
And joining me now to talk all about shopping and spending money and our spending habits and what we're willing to pay for and why is my cohost, Anna.
Hello, Anna.
How are you today?
Hello, Andrew.
I'm doing very well.
What about yourself?
I'm doing great.
It is Friday evening here.
I'm heading into the weekend.
In fact, this is the last thing I have to do before my weekend begins, so I'm in a very good mood.
And don't worry, guys.
I won't rush the episode.
I always look forward to our Chatterbox episode.
So, yeah, we'll take our time, but, yeah, we're heading into the weekend.
Things are looking good.
And Anna, we're going to talk about a very interesting topic today.
It's like the psychology of spending money.
And I think it's really fascinating why and how we choose to spend our money, and sometimes we are just so careless with money, and we can be very impulsive and buy really stupid things and kind of waste our money, at least from time to time.
Hopefully, we all don't do that too much, but it does happen from time to time.
Right?
And then other times, we can be very stingy, and we feel like we don't want to pay for a service, we don't want to buy something when in fact, maybe it's not that expensive and could add a lot of value to our lives.
So it is really interesting what's going on psychologically in our minds that allows us to spend money or to save our money.
And so that's what we're going to get into today, and we're especially gonna focus on our personal spending habits.
So, Anna, yeah, maybe maybe I'll ask you just as an opening question.
Is there something maybe you you feel like there's something in your life where where you just spend it doesn't really matter.
You're just always happy to buy it or always maybe not happy to spend money on it, but you're like, it's okay.
I I I just don't check it.
Like, maybe you have a cafe that you like to go to, and maybe the latte is more expensive than it would be to make it at home, but you just enjoy the experience, so you don't care.
You just go to the cafe.
Anything like that?
I've got a couple of things.
So absolutely with coffee, as you mentioned there.
So my motto with that is life is too short for bad coffee.
So I absolutely will invest in a nice cup of coffee to get the day going.
So I would spend on that where other people might think, nah, I'll just I'll just make it at home and that's fine.
I think another example I have is the cinema.
Okay.
So if I want to go to the cinema, there's a couple of options in in Madrid where I'm based and there are just your standard cinemas.
But there's this one really nice cinema in the center of the city, and it it it's like a luxury cinema.
And you can go there.
It's a reclining seat.
They come to your seat.
You can order the popcorn.
It's just a more elevated experience and I will pay for that even though sometimes it could be double the price of going to a normal cinema, which the experience wouldn't be that different.
But for me, because I don't go to the cinema that much, I'm willing to pay that because I want that experience and I really, really enjoy it and it's worth it to me.
Whereas other people would be like, why would you pay double to just go and watch the same movie?
Like, it doesn't really make sense for other people.
But for me, I'm willing to do that.
What about you, Andrew?
Do you have something like that?
I think for coffee, I love that phrase that you said.
What was it?
Life is too short for bad coffee.
没错。
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
是的。
Yeah.
I agree.
I sometimes recoil when my my wife does the finances in my home.
I I'm I'm very lucky.
She's very organized, and she does the budgeting, and she has this great spreadsheet.
And at the end of each month, she'll call me over and show me the spreadsheet, and she breaks down all of our expenses and what we paid for and this and that.
She's amazing.
I I got very blessed with an organized and financially intelligent wife, so I'm very lucky.
However, sometimes I recoil in shock when I look at how much we spent on coffee for the month.
I'm like, oh my god, really?
Or bread.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
Because often we'll go to a cafe.
We I mean, we're not going every day.
It's not like this everyday habit, But, usually, we will go maybe once or twice a week to a cafe, and then, you know, we get a nice coffee, and you get a nice pastry or something.
We'll split it.
And, yeah, it it doesn't seem like it's too expensive in the moment.
And in fact, I would say it's not crazy expensive.
Like, it's not like we're, you know, going into debt over this or anything like that.
However, when you see it all compiled and added up at the end of the month, you're like, maybe we could cut back a little bit on that.
Like, maybe it's too expensive.
So definitely going to cafes and going to the bakery, that is our guilty pleasure, I think.
In general, maybe going to restaurants as well.
You know, in Korea, originally, it was very, very affordable to eat out.
And I would say that when I first came to this country, it was almost cheaper to go to a restaurant than it would have been to eat at home.
And that was just me as a single person cooking, and, yeah, just buying all of the ingredients, the time that you had to invest into cooking, all of these things, it made it so that it was like almost cheaper just to go out and eat.
And I think my wife and I, like, sort of got used to that lifestyle where it's like, you can just go to the restaurant, and for like 5 or $6, you can get a good meal.
However, prices have gone up a lot.
There's a lot of inflation.
That's not necessarily the case anymore.
Of course, it's still much more convenient, but, yeah, sometimes when I look at our budget and how much we spent in a month for going to a restaurant, yeah, maybe we have to be a little bit more careful about that.
But it is super convenient.
The time factor is the biggest benefit, I think.
That's what you're that's what you're paying for.
Right?
You're paying for the convenience.
You're paying for, I don't have to do the washing up.
I don't have to waste my time on that.
And it's interesting that you bring that up.
So that is something, for example, if I compare with my brother.
My brother really likes to eat out and try different restaurants and get takeaways.
And I really, in the last few years, have massively moved away from that.
It's something that I don't really want to spend my money on, partly because I feel like it's extremely expensive, a bit like you said, Andrew, it's got more and more expensive to the point where I remember the last takeaway I got, it was a burger and it was like €20 for the burger.
Okay.
That's wild.
Burger and chips, right, together is €20.
Burger and chips.
And I just thought, you know what?
I actually just prefer to cook at home.
So I've become a bit less willing to spend my money on eating out.
I'll spend it on coffee and like things like that.
But I I going to restaurants for me, I've I've definitely pulled back my spending a bit on that in the last few years and just prefer to to cook at home and have those type of things.
So my spending habits have have changed around that, but then at the same time, I've increased my spending in other areas.
So I would say that I you know, things like my hair, like I pay for a hair treatment every year, which is really expensive.
I can't even say how much because it will I can't even I'm in denial.
I'm in denial.
I'm in denial.
So I can't even say it out loud, but it is really expensive.
And most people would think, what on earth are you doing?
That's a lot of money.
But for me, it's so worth it and I love it.
I love the ritual of getting the treatment.
So again, that's something that I'm happy to spend money for even though does it technically or make a huge difference to my hair?
I think it does, but of course, I'm completely biased.
But I don't know.
I I'm just willing to spend my money on it.
So things like that, I I pay for where other people would be like, that's ridiculous.
I would never spend my money on those things.
So, yeah, people are so different about what they what they spend their money on.
Andrew,
Maybe if I could ask you, Andrew, actually
对。
Mhmm.
Talking about spending money, do you spend differently if you're paying with your phone?
Because that's how a lot of people pay nowadays, right?
Your phone, your bank card or cash.
Do you use all of those, and do you spend differently when you're using them?
I use my phone in Canada.
I have Apple Pay connected to my Canadian bank account, so I can use my phone in Canada.
Apple Pay is kind of hit or miss here in South Korea, and you have to have it's actually a bit of a pet peeve of mine.
You have to have a card which foreigners can't get.
So because I'm not a Korean, I can't get that specific card that works with Apple Pay, which is fine.
Whatever.
No worries.
But yeah.
So I don't use my phone to pay.
There are other ways to pay with a phone, but I'm old school.
I like pulling the card out of my wallet.
Me too.
Yeah.
I know.
I'm like a grandma nowadays with that.
I do because everyone's like, beep, beep, beep, beep.
And I do have to say that for one week, I did start paying with my phone and I was like, oh, this is because it's just like sweets, you know, you're just like, and it just doesn't feel like you're spending money.
And I was like, no, no.
I think I need to I need to just go back to the classic card.
对。
Yeah.
I love getting my card out.
It feels nice.
I like that.
I like paying like that.
I'd never ever use my phone to pay, which kind of makes me a bit old and whatever.
But yeah, I'm not I'm not with that with that.
I haven't I'm not an early adopter for the payment things.
I'm still card and sometimes cash even.
Sometimes I still pay with cash.
是的。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
I we recently had a holiday here in South Korea, the Lunar New Year.
And for the Lunar New Year, my mother-in-law kindly, very, very nicely gave me a little bit of cash for the Lunar New Year.
And so it's been sitting in my wallet since then, and that was in February.
So it's a little while now since that time has passed, but that cash is just still sitting in my wallet.
And I was trying to think, why haven't I used it?
And I think it's part and part that first of all, since it was a gift, I feel kind of bad just, like, using it.
You know, like, it was a nice gift, and if I spend that cash, it better be for something good.
I can't just, like, go to the supermarket and buy bananas and use that cash or something.
Right?
Like, I should use it to buy something nice because it was a gift.
So maybe that's why I haven't spent the money.
And then also, I think limiting yourself to cash has this, like, psychological factor where it's just really annoying to have to use the cash, and then if I break the bill, it's a larger bill, it's a 50,001 bill.
So if I which is around $50.
Imagine a $50 bill.
If I break that, then I'm gonna have change and smaller bills, and it's just gonna be annoying to carry around.
So I think this is a great way if you want to save some money and just talk yourself out of buying things that maybe you don't need so much, is just to keep some cash in your wallet and not use your cards.
And then, yeah, maybe you'd be less tempted to buy things unless they were really, really important.
I've had the same thing as, oh, somebody gave me cash as a a present, and it kind of just sat there for ages.
And then, you know, little by little, I would use it.
But I would always forget to use it.
Like you said, it's just not a payment method that we're used to using as much now.
And I guess in the future, we'll probably be cashless completely, I imagine, in the not too distant future.
It's coming.
是的
Yeah.
It's definitely coming.
And and what's one thing we've mentioned, Andrew, what we will pay for?
What's one thing that or some things that other people spend money on that you're like, absolutely, I I will not spend money on that at all.
Well, as a joke, when you were talking about your hair treatment
Oh, right.
没错。
Yes.
I'm glad I don't have to deal with that.
Yes, exactly.
That's one expense off your list indeed.
是的。
Yeah.
I'm trying to think.
I have a friend who likes going out for cocktails and I always am like, oh my gosh, why do you spend so much money on cocktails?
Like, if you go to the bar for drinking cocktails, which are quite expensive, then that can really add up and be a significant source of money.
I mean, like, whatever.
If you can afford it and you enjoy it, that's alright.
But I'm glad I don't really have that desire to go to cocktail bars because often a drink is maybe around $20, plus you have to pay the tip on top of that.
And if you're having a couple drinks or you're on a date or something, and it can really add up.
So, sometimes when I talk to that friend and they told me about spending money at a cocktail bar.
I'm like, whew.
Okay.
I'm glad I'm not into that.
I don't have to do that.
It's an
expensive habit.
Yeah.
没错。
Right.
It's an expensive thing to to enjoy.
For me, I've got a couple, two specific ones.
The first one is around technology.
So my partner, we're planning to move to a new location and he wants to upgrade the television.
And he's got this idea of this very fancy, huge television, I don't know, OLED or whatever it's called or I don't know.
And I absolutely refuse to spend like €5,000 on a TV.
Like I will not do it.
So we're now in the negotiation phase of which TV we would potentially buy but he's absolutely set and he loves spending money on technology and he will spend money on technology but I'm just like, I don't care, like, it's just a TV.
It all looks the same in the end.
He's like, how could you possibly say that?
It's completely different And I just, I don't see the difference.
So that's one thing that I'm often not willing to spend, you know, an extortionate amount of money on.
And the other thing is cleaning products.
I absolutely refuse to spend double the price on branded cleaning products when you've got white label products that do exactly the same thing.
They have exactly the same ingredients.
So I refuse to buy expensive cleaning products.
I think they're absolutely the biggest rip off ever.
Like, bleach is bleach.
I'm sure maybe there's slightly better quality bleach, but it is bleach.
Like, I will not pay double for that.
So But some people really enjoy buying branded cleaning products because it has a certain smell or because the packaging is nicer.
Like, I couldn't give a toss about the packaging.
Like I just don't care.
Like give me the cheapest cleaning products ever.
Like I will not spend my money on that.
Yeah, sorry.
Got very got very animated about that but you know, very branded cleaning products are just not my thing.
No.
No.
I get that.
I like how you called them white label.
I've never heard that before, but in Canada, we would say no brand, a no brand
Oh, product.
对。
Yeah.
是的。
Yeah.
Okay.
I sympathize with your partner about having the the good tech.
I guess I'm sort of that way too.
I remember having to negotiate with my wife about our stereo because I'm really into music.
And when I was trying to buy speakers for our home, we had to go back and forth because speakers are like, well, any audio equipment, you can spend just incredible amounts of money if you're not careful.
And so trying to find where is that line with my wife, like, how much can I spend?
How much can I get permission to spend on speakers?
It was a fine dance, but I think finally we found something that we were both happy with financially and sound quality wise as well.
So, yeah, I I totally get that negotiation that you have to go through.
对。
Yeah.
We're still we're still in progress.
Still in progress.
And I'm wondering, to go kind of to the other side of things, instead of spending money or things that you refuse to spend money on, is there, like, something cheap that you just don't want to pay for for some reason?
Like, I don't know, for whatever reason, sometimes we see things and we think, Yeah, that would probably add a lot of value to my life.
And often you see advertised, especially for digital products, you know, it might be some app that you need, or maybe some kind of service you need, and it will say like, I don't know, $5 a month cheaper than a cup of coffee to use this app or this digital service for one month.
Maybe it's like a video service or a music music subscription service or audiobook service, something like that.
That's how they advertise.
Right?
Cheaper than a cup of coffee.
But for some reason, we're just like, it seems kind of expensive to me.
Even though maybe it would add a lot of value to our lives.
Have you ever had that situation?
有。
Yeah.
I would say, for example, with ads on YouTube, for example.
So that's something that you can get a subscription and you takes away the ads.
Right?
Which I guess would probably save me some time when I have to do some research and look at YouTube videos and things like this.
But I don't know why.
I just refuse to pay for it.
I'm like, I'm not paying for another digital subscription even though actually it's a relatively low cost.
And like you said, it's just a couple of cups of coffee but I there's just something about it that really gets my backup that I have to pay for it and that irritates me.
Or for example, when I'm watching Amazon Prime and you have to pay to not see adverts and I'm like, but hold on, I'm already paying to have this subscription.
So I yeah.
There's some things like that that I refuse to do.
But then there was an app recently that I I love, which is called Flight Raider, where you can track all the flights around the world.
I don't know if you know this, if you've heard of it, Andrew.
It's it's really popular.
And if you're listening, maybe you've you're into aviation as well.
And I had been using the app without ads for years and the ads were so irritating and annoying that eventually, I caved and I actually paid the annual subscription, which was, you know, pathetic.
It was like €13 or something for the whole year.
And it's like, why didn't I just do that sooner?
Like, it makes the experience so much better.
It's so much smoother like your time in the app.
It's like, why didn't I just do it before?
But for some reason, I just yeah.
I it just didn't add up for me.
What about you?
是的。
Yeah.
I get that.
And I think that's a really good point that if there is a service that you enjoy, and I mean, I guess, technically, you are compensating the creators of that aviation app by looking at the ads and potentially tapping on the ads.
But if there is a service that you enjoy and that you use often, then if you can support the people who make it, I think that's a great thing to do.
I I of course, I'm speaking as a creator, as somebody who who makes content for people to listen to, so I am more sympathetic to them.
But I think for those kinds of services, if it's a podcast or a YouTube channel that I really like, I don't mind spending a few dollars a month to support them, even if they're not really giving me anything extra.
It's just like maybe it's just like an ad free podcast episode or something.
But I'm like, you know, you're working hard, and you're making great content.
It's more like I'm giving them the money to say that I support you, keep going, rather than like, give me some bonus extras.
Right?
So, I think that's a great thing to do.
I'm trying to think of things recently, I've been averse to paying delivery fees.
So, one example is that when you shop online here in South Korea, often if you spend I guess it would be the equivalent of around $50, a lot of online stores will give you free shipping.
So it's kind of motivation to spend that $50, right?
And then you get free shipping.
This is like clothing stores I'm thinking of, and I'm also really into listening to music.
So I I shop online for, like, different used record stores.
It's great.
I don't have to leave my house.
I don't have to go downtown.
I don't have to waste time in transport.
Right?
I can just shop online.
So convenient.
However, that $50 limit, sometimes I just wanna buy one used record that maybe costs $5 or $8.
But then since I didn't get the free shipping limit, I have to pay for the shipping.
And the shipping sometimes can be the equivalent 2 to $3.
And so I'm like, is it really worth it to spend $3 on shipping for a $5 used record?
And no, obviously, it's not.
So I'm I'm really stingy about that.
So I'll either wait until I I've collected enough records in my bag that my shopping bag or my shopping cart online that I wanna buy and then wait for that and and get the free shipping.
Or I actually, last weekend, I went downtown, and I went to a record store to buy a $5 used record because I thought somebody else is gonna buy it if I don't buy it.
But I did that.
I I went through that whole process of leaving my house, of riding the subway, of going there, and then coming back.
Probably, I spent more money on the subway to do that than I I would have had just to pay for the shipping, but it was like the principle.
It was like, I'm not spending this, like, $3 for shipping.
So, yeah, I I used my time and my money for the subway fee.
I guess I'm pretty stubborn about that.
Well, it's funny, isn't it?
Because that's how they get you.
Because let's say you had that record, right, for $5, and then you had to pay $3 shipping.
And you're like, oh, but that's such a bad deal.
But then you're like, okay, I wanna qualify for the free shipping because then I'm getting a good deal.
So actually, you end up spending $50 rather than $8, but you come away thinking that you did better, which is so funny, right?
Even though actually you spent nearly five times as much as you were gonna spend in the first place.
But you come away thinking, ah, I cheated the system.
I got free delivery, you know?
So it's so interesting how that works and that's how they get you.
And again, it's kind of this rational thing is that actually, well, you would have just spent $8 but now you spent 50.
So you've actually spent much more than you had intended to, so great for them.
But again, it's this idea of we think we've got the good deal.
It's interesting, the irrationality of it all.
And I know there's that YouTube video that I'm sure you're gonna share the link to, Andrew, which goes into that in more detail.
But, yeah, it's really fascinating about our shopping choices and how companies try to sort of game our psychology to make us think we've got a good deal when I'm not always sure that we have.
Right?
是的。
Yeah.
Absolutely.
And and I I will definitely put the link to that video.
It's a a TED Talk, and I also have an article that we used for researching this episode.
I'll link both of those resources in the description for this episode for anyone who wants to do some further reading and some further viewing about this topic.
But and it also makes me think of the psychology of marketing when, you know, instead of selling a product, let's say, for $10, the stores will sell it for $9.99.
Right?
It's like that 1p difference or 1p difference, you know, like, oh, okay.
Now I'll buy it.
If it were $10, I wouldn't buy it.
But is $9.99 okay?
Just seeing that 9 there has this huge psychological impact.
And another example is when you go to the cinema, for example, you'll have three options and it talks about this in the video.
There's always a useless option that nobody wants.
So for example, it will be like popcorn on its own, €8, a medium popcorn, €9, and then extra large with a drink, €10.
So the other options are, like, obviously, you're not gonna get that.
And you think, well, why would I get those when I could get an extra large €10?
And of course, what they always wanted is they wanted you to spend the €10.
But by giving you those options, it helps you make a decision.
But you were always gonna choose that.
So even though that's I think the argument behind the video is that you think you've made a choice, but that was always the choice that you were gonna choose.
Right?
So it's it's really interesting.
The cinema is a really good place to to see that type of pricing in action with these useless options that nobody wants.
There's also a lot of that with subscriptions or any type of content online.
They kind of give you an option to steer you in the direction that they think is best for you.
Right?
Hopefully, option that's gonna give you the most value.
But, yeah, it's it's it's very interesting.
Lots of psychology going on there.
So, yeah, there's a lot of, like, psychology behind it and a lot of don't wanna say manipulation because I think everybody has free will and can make a decision about buying something if it's good for them or bad for them.
But, yeah, you do have to be careful that a lot of companies, a lot of businesses, they just care about the money in your wallet.
Right?
And they're trying to get it away from you.
是的。
Yeah.
没错。
Mhmm.
对。
Yep.
And lots of these kind of forces that we're we feel like we have more autonomy over, but actually, we're kind of being driven to make certain choices or we're encouraged to spend more money like with the free shipping.
I think that's such a good example that you brought up.
I think that's so powerful and really does not force you, of course, but encourages you to spend more money because then you think you've got a good deal.
So, no, it's it's really it's really quite fascinating to be awareness of it and and to see what companies are doing.
But hopefully, like you said, Andrew, it's about hopefully, some companies are doing it from the perspective of how can I give you the most value?
Let me show you which option would be best for you, right, and creating a really good product.
That's always what it should be about.
But yeah, not sure if that's always the case.
At least that's the case here at Culips and
I'm Exactly.
Here for Exactly.
是的。
Yeah.
