So back to Herbert.

After graduating from high school, he attended Indiana University, but he only lasted for one semester before dropping out.

The following two years, he kinda floated about, but he ended up returning in 1967 to try and finish.

I remember when I was, like, 19, I was working my first job, and I had an apartment, but I didn't have my driver's license, which is a story for another day.

So I used to take the BART train to work, and then I would take BART back to another station.

So it was during this kind of, like, second stint that he had at Indiana University where he meets Julie through a friend of a friend.

And looking back on the meeting, Julie said, he was nice, fun to be with, and good looking.

Eventually, he completed another semester of school in 1972 at Butler, which is a private liberal arts college also in Indianapolis.

So as he goes into his twenties, he works a few different places, and past colleagues and employers noted that he had a really strong work ethic but had bizarre tendencies.

In November 1971, he gets married to Julie, and shortly after that, they buy a home in the suburbs.

After Herb left his job in 1985, he went and worked at a local thrift store, which was kind of the beginning of everything.

They initially had a lot of success with the stores, but it started to kind of plateau, and then it started to fail.

As Julie tells it, the long hours that they were putting into the stores, the pressures of parenting their children, and later the financial strain led to kind of a burnout.

Herb actually moved out in February 1991 and filed for divorce, though the couple soon reconciled.

That November, in spite of their business problems, the two of them bought Fox Hollow Farm, which was purchased with a small down payment.

Walks inside one day and shows his mom a human skull that he had found out on their property.

And he takes her out to this spot where he found the skull and pointed out among the leaves were several other bones which appeared again to be human.

When she later confronted Herb about the disturbing discovery, he had no qualms about it.

A man told them of a strange tryst he had that summer with somebody named Brian.

It turned out to be the missing link because Brian was none other than Herb Baummeister.

In November, detectives showed up at Fox Hollow Farm asking to search the estate.

When Herb refused, police, lacking sufficient evidence for a warrant, decided to go to work on Julie.

They approached her at one of the Save A Lot locations, and they told her about Herb's cruising and that he was a suspect in the disappearances.

When she confronted her with the charges, he dismissed them.

Police didn't have a ton to go off of other than the experience that one man had with this Brian guy who turned out to be Herb, but they know that something was off about Herb.

Now on June 24, the following year, when Herb was away, Julie finally allowed the police to inspect their property.

Remembering the two week search that followed, she says she clung to her children as if, quote, unquote, huddling all my puppies together.

Upon closer inspection of the gravel which lay alongside the grass in the Baummeister's backyard, they realized it was not gravel at all.

In the following days, the site was excavated.
