Hi, everyone.
Welcome to Dev Raga Personal Finance.
My name is Dev Raga, and in this episode, we will showcase some of the negative things of making a lot of money or being wealthy.
And, yes, there are good sides to it, but, of course, there are bad sides to it.
Over the last seven years or eight years of podcasting, this show has mainly been showcasing the positives of being wealthy.
Money management, everything is hunky dory, everyone's happy because I still strongly feel being empowered, being educated about money and its opportunities is way better than just ignoring it.
But it does come with its own negatives and risks, and it's not all rosy.
Let's get started.

Let's face it.
People think having a lot of money, making a lot of money, and becoming wealthy means the ultimate success.
It's revered.
And often people think of all the problems in the world would go away if they just had more money, if they just became more wealthy.
Hell, when I was a poor medical student, I used to think like this as well.
If only I made a 100,000 as an intern, my problems will be a lot less compared to my life now as a poor medical student.
If I only made a quarter of $1,000,000 as a registrar, my problems will go away.
Surely, the surgeons, the anesthetists, the consultant GPs, the physicians who make millions of dollars don't have any problems.
Right?
That's a cliche.
The optics.
But with wealth, it's what we don't see that matters most.
In this episode, I wanna highlight some of the downsides of being wealthy.
Now for the purposes of the episode, we won't only talk about sudden wealth, but we will also include some aspects of it.
Number one, trust and relationship issues.
Think about the wealthy people around the world, the billionaires and the multimillionaires.
Would you swap your life with them right now?
I wouldn't.
One of the risks of becoming wealthy even over a period of time, but definitely over a short period of time, is you tend to revolve and think about it a lot more than the average person.
People tend to define you by your wealth.
You are still you to you, but not to people around you.
Friends and family, if they've not organically become wealthy like yourself, tend to feel inferior, tend to separate more and more.
In fact, there is nothing more in common anymore.
I've noticed this even in relationships altogether.
During medical school and junior doctor years, we had a select group of family friends.
Then we had kids.
Then all of a sudden, we didn't have much in common with our friends who did not have kids.
And over time, we made new friends, school friends, kinder families, people with similar age kids, and a whole friendship circle changed.
This sort of things tend to happen as you become wealthy.
If you're wealthy, you tend to surround yourself with like minded people who are also happen to be wealthy or on their way to become wealthy.
And over time, your whole friendship circles change.
Number two is family issues.
This is entirely dependent on your family, but over time, it is a risk that families may rely on your wealth.
In some cultures, this is very, very common, expected, and even encouraged.
In Western culture, it is not expected nor encouraged.
Your money is your money.
My wealth is my wealth.
As we become more and more multicultural, the concept of wealth and money amongst cultures interject because they become more and more fluid.
Families may rely on financial help with yourself.
Depending on your views on money and your culture, you may not like this.
This may create family conflict.
The policy should be, if you want to help family with money, that is fine.
Never expect the money back or have a strict wording in writing to ensure the money is returned at a later date.
Having verbal agreements does not work.
This also depends on immediate family members or extended or long lost family members.
Number three is suspicion.
This may be a problem for the sudden wealthy, the inheritance, the lotto winners, etcetera, etcetera.
You can become suspicious of people around you.
Are they genuinely your friends?
Are they playing you for your money?
In some instances, new relationships formed may come into question.
Managing this effectively and not flaunting your wealth may help achieve some modesty and also reduce your risk of being played.
Number four is lack of privacy.
This is more of a problem for wealthy people whom are out there in the open, like entertainers, singers, movie stars, rock stars, entrepreneurs.
For the quiet wealthy, your suburban family who are multimillionaires, the next door neighbour who is a millionaire, much less of a problem unless you flaunt your wealth.
Big homes, flashy cars, fancy holiday photos on social media, etc.
Etc.
By the way, don't do this live.
If you are posting online live it means you are not home.
You will be surprised that criminals are watching.
It can attract unwanted media scrutiny, unwanted gossip, and people become more and more judgmental.
And in rare circumstances, wealth can attract criminals, gangs, and even harassment.
Number five is increased stress.
This is actually quite common.
I've noticed this a bit more myself as I embark on a wealth ladder.
Protecting your downside, fear of losing your wealth, and money can become a bit of an obsession.
You almost need to change the way that you behave or change the way that you speak in order to protect your wealth.
Now you may be responsible for more people like various charity organizations, so you kinda need to maintain your wealth as well as others may need to rely on this legitimately.
Now in super wealthy families, you have family officers or staff or people who serve and work for you, can be an added responsibility.
You are now responsible for potentially tens or if not hundreds of people.
Legal entities need to be created and protected, and you are more likely to be involved in litigation.
This means a team of lawyers, maybe even an accountant, more stress.
That's just yuck.
Number six is social isolation.
The more wealthy you become, the less you tend to be hanging around with people because there's less people around you of that wealth.
The romanticization of wealthy people hanging around with normal people, that's too cliche.
It doesn't work.
It doesn't really happen.
The distribution of wealth, you're amongst less and less individuals and families as you move up the wealth ladder.
Now let's look at the data in Australia.
The top 10% of wealthy people in Australia own around 50% of the entire nation's wealth.
That's pretty insane.
I don't know.
We're all thinking Australia is an equitable country.
It sometimes isn't.
And as my understanding, this gap is actually widening.
The top 10% of wealthy people on average are $5,000,000 net worth or more.
The bottom 60% on average are around $380,000 net worth.
The Gini coefficient in Australia, which I need to do an episode on, is point six one to point six two for wealth.
The closer to zero you are, the more equal you are as a society.
The closer to one you are, the more unequal you are as a society.
So notice in Australia, our Gini coefficient for wealth is actually above point five.
We're actually relatively unequal.
Interestingly though, when you look at the Gini coefficient for Australia for income, we're far more equal.
We're point three two compared to wealth.
Generally speaking, Scandinavian countries almost always rank the highest amongst equal societies when it comes to wealth and income when compared to most other countries.
The developing countries often rank amongst the most unequal societies when compared to developed countries.
Let's take a quick break.
And when we come back, we'll look at the pros and cons and some of the pitfalls as well to consider of being wealthy.
Be right back.

This podcast is brought to you by Skye, specialist insurance advice firm for the professionals who listen to my podcast.
Skye
Skye caters for complex life disability and income protection insurance.
When you see a financial advisor to set up your life and disability insurance, you can even have it funded by your superannuation fund but not connected to it.
This means if you change super funds, you keep your insurance and just re divert the premium from your new super fund.

Welcome back.
Now this is Dev Raga.
We're talking about the downsides of being wealthy, which is, you know, which is something that you need to consider.
So let's keep going.
Judgmental and pressures.
So imagine the pressure faced by Roger Federer's kids.
Imagine the pressure faced by entrepreneurs' children.
It's always as if they need to be wealthy and successful too.
In fact, even when I do podcasts for healthcare workers, I do get some heat that it is aimed at healthcare workers who arguably earn more than the general public.
Surely you guys don't need all this advice.
Surely you make heaps of money already.
It invalidates or makes our concerns less valid.
In fact, I was point blank told by a patient, you're a doctor, you're a multimillionaire anyway, we have no chance.
Kind of rough to be treated that way, to be honest, as no healthcare worker in a public hospital even asks any patient for their financial status before seeing them.
So I took offense at what this patient said to me.
I told them they can't speak to me this way, so let's concentrate on their health rather than speak about nonsense like this about money in a clinical setting.
We see this in the medical world.
Most of us have faced the questions, are your children going to be doctors?
That's another judgment.
That's another pressure.
This is far more pronounced in some ethnicities than other ethnicities.
Ethnicities of higher pressure risks are Asian people, Indian Subcontinent, people from The Middle East, and Africa.
Their children often face these sort of pressures.
And let's face it.
I'm not being, you know, you know, blase about this.
This is a real fact, and this has to be documented as the bamboo ceiling.
The bamboo ceiling is a concept popularized amongst Asian ethnicities mainly, but the concept remains the same, and it can apply to other cultures as well.
The global politics and wealth is predominantly dominated by Western societies.
So people that migrate out of Asia often push their kids to succeed financially and education wise because they feel otherwise they feel they'll be discriminated against.
To some extent, this is true, especially in the sixties, the seventies, the eighties, and nineties.
But over time, this has become less and less true for Asians and Indians and now has more settled with some ethnicities, second and third generation particularly in western societies.
And over time these thoughts will change and become obsolete but it will take some time.
The legacy and historical events which have happened in the twentieth century have not helped either.
The other concept which is more prominent among some ethnicities is called the model minority.
The concept is that minorities just need to be model citizens in order to be respected.
And if they make any single mistake, the optics and the outcomes will be far more pronounced when compared to citizens who form the majority of the population.
Number eight is personal risk.
Now when you become wealthy or a high income earner, in addition to legal threats, there's literally your life could be in danger.
There is a famous story in the nineteen sixties when a family won the lotto, and Graham Thorn, the eight year old boy, was kidnapped and subsequently murdered.
This was a boy of the family.
Horrible chain of events.
The parents had just won a $100,000 back in the nineteen sixties and lived modestly at the time.
For context, it's around $3,000,000 in today's currency.
Back then, it was customary to publish the names of the lotto winners in Australia.
Nowadays, you can remain anonymous.
For the context, back in the nineteen sixties, people did not bother to lock their doors in Australia.
In fact, I remember this in the early nineteen nineties in Adelaide when I was growing up as it was relatively safe across the city.
To lock the doors was unusual.
What was a ransom?
Wealthy people often invest in their security, whether it's security cameras, security guards, or even personal bodyguards.
Number nine, achievements become less meaningful, and purpose becomes less and less as you become wealthy.
This is true for some people.
Think about it this way.
When I was an intern, if I invested a thousand dollars and made $10,000, that's a massive win.
If I did the same today, it's not much of a win at all.
The purpose becomes meaningless.
$10,000 for me, luckily now, doesn't mean much, but it meant a lot when I was a junior doctor.
If you've achieved financial success and have worked hard for it, then what else is there to achieve?
This is a problem and also the huge risk if you're only thinking about financial success is the purpose.
It's not.
What is the purpose of all of this becomes a valid question.
Number 10 is morality.
Maybe a question.
Is it moral for you to be this wealthy whilst 50% of the world are struggling?
Is it moral for you to be this wealthy in Australia knowing that 50% of Australia's wealth is owned by 10% of the population?
You may find it very hard to say no to donations, for example.
And if you did, then your whole existence is brought into question.
How many times have people come knocking on your door and, you know, you're relatively wealthy, you live in a posh house in a posh suburb and drive a nice car and have a great job, And they come in and they ask you for money because, you know, these are people that work hard to get donations.
You're kinda compelled to say yes.
And if you say no, it kind of feels really bad.
You feel guilt about it.
You have all this money, but you're still saying no.
Have you ever gone shopping and point black, the cashier asks you, would you like to donate to this fund to save the planet?
And in that split second, you just give up and say, yeah.
当然。
Sure.
No worries.
I felt the pressure because it's almost embarrassing to say no.
How could I say no when I got so much money?
If I said no with my money and wealth, is that okay?
Is that the right thing to do?
How can I live with myself?
Will I be considered selfish?
Will I be considered obnoxious?
Will I be judged?
Is this immoral?
Number 11 is raising kids can be a challenge.
How can you teach the value of money and morals and expectations in life to your children if all they ever knew was wealth?
This can be very, very challenging for parents, so it's important to keep them grounded.
Learn to say no.
It's okay not to have a lavish wedding or birthday party.
It's okay not to have a lavish get together.
It's okay not to always stay in fancy hotels or find business class.
Ensuring you teach the value of experiences what it takes to pay them.
The one good way to teach kids about money is ask them to pay the bills.
Then they'll visually understand why it's important to turn off the lights and keep water use to a minimum.
Will Smith wrote in his biography, when you're poor and depressed, you can dream of becoming rich.
This means money will make your problems go away.
Then he realized he became rich and famous, and the problems, albeit different, still remained.
Morgan Housel also writes, gaining money probably didn't fix your marriage.
It didn't make your friends like you more.
It didn't make you feel more fulfilled.
So what used to be a comforting optimism about what money could do for you is replaced by the stark reality of what it can't.
What's Dev Raga's final thoughts?
I have more money now than I started off with.
Do I prefer life now, a life before when I was poor as a med student?
Of course, I prefer life now.
More likely because now I have money to enjoy it with people around me.
I have options.
But having said this, my goal is not to endlessly accumulate wealth.
It's to accumulate enough, know when is enough, and then move on with life.
I'm slowly learning other things in life, not just work and investments.
I don't worry about money now as I used to.
Now are different worries, some are much more harder to fix, and money alone will not solve them.
I can tell you right now, the people that say money isn't important are the same people who are already wealthy.
What they really mean is money is not the most important thing in life.
And I agree.
The people that say money does not buy happiness, what they really mean is money is not the only thing which buys happiness.
In fact, it's been proven the more money you have, the happier you are.
But the level of happiness doesn't increase substantially after a certain point, but it still increases.
That is the utility of money and wealth diminishes as you become more and more richer and wealthier.
And I've done an episode on Utility Theory, one of my favorite episodes that I've done some years ago now.
