If movement has ever felt like punishment, pressure, or something that you should be doing, this episode is going to completely reframe that for you.
Today, we are talking about how to approach movement in a way that actually supports your body, improves how you feel, and even helps your relationship with food.
Hey, Rebel, and welcome to the Diet Culture Rebel podcast.
I'm your host, Bonnie, a registered dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor, here to help you eat without guilt and pursue health without dieting by becoming an Intuitive Eater and giving diet culture the middle finger.
When I was pregnant, I started going to pelvic floor physical therapy, and I found out that a lot of my pain that I was experiencing actually came from weak hips.
And honestly, I wasn't that surprised because for years, specifically in my teens and early twenties, I did so much running and not enough strength training.
And that period of my life also overlapped with when I was really struggling with food.
So looking back, those two things, my relationship with movement and my food struggles, were absolutely feeding off of each other.
Back in the day, movement was really just about the calorie burn.
It was about feeling justified in what I ate.
It was about control.
And maybe that's the case for you too, which is exactly why you need to listen to today's podcast episode.
So at that time, we're going back to when I was pregnant and went to pelvic floor PT.
At that time, when I found out that I had weak hips, fortunately, things had changed for the better with how I approached moving my body intentionally and my relationship with food.
So when I found out my hips were weak, I became curious.
I wanted to know what can I do to actually support my body and feel better?
So I started incorporating strength training, specifically targeting my hips, especially after having two babies.
And let me tell you, I could feel how weak they were at first.
But over time, as I continued with these targeted workouts, I started to feel stronger.
I had less pain, and my body overall just felt so much better.
And that is what kept me going and keeps me going today when I move my body intentionally.
Not guilt, not pressure, not a quote unquote health kick, but the intrinsic motivation of knowing that movement actually helps me feel better in my body.
And I share that because for so many of you, movement might feel really complicated right now.
Maybe you feel like you are constantly overexercising and pushing yourself to the limit.
Maybe you want to work out, but you just can't seem to follow through.
Or maybe movement feels like a chore, feels like punishment, or something that you only do when you are trying to be, quote, unquote, good.
But what if movement didn't have to feel that way?
What if it could actually support your relationship with your body and your relationship with food too?
Because the truth is learning how to listen to your body does not just apply to eating, it applies to movement too.
And that is exactly what we are diving into today.
I am so excited to introduce you to today's guest, Coach Tyler Bramlett.
Coach Tyler is the co founder of WeShape, a movement with over 6,000,000 followers worldwide that is redefining how we approach fitness and our bodies.
Through his work and his podcast, the Feeling Lighter podcast, he brings together psychology, philosophy, and physiology to help people reconnect with their bodies in a way that actually feels good.
But what makes Tyler's story so powerful is that he did not always approach fitness this way.
He actually used to build the exact types of programs many of us have been caught up in.
The new you weight loss programs focused on losing belly fat, getting toned abs, and ultimately built on self judgment, criticism, and shame.
But over time, especially after becoming a dad to two daughters, he started to question that approach.
And he made a really bold but great decision to completely shift the way he shows up in the fitness industry.
Now his work is centered around helping people take care of themselves through movement without focusing on the scale, appearance, or shame.
And I've actually had the privilege of seeing this firsthand.
I joined one of WeShape's community q and a's where I got to connect with their members and answer questions about intuitive eating and healing your relationship with food.
And I can genuinely say what coach Tyler and his team are doing aligns so deeply with everything we talk about here on the podcast.
After listening to my conversation with coach Tyler, my hope is that you start to see movement through a completely different lens.
One that feels positive, sustainable, and rooted in self care.
Before you hear from coach Tyler, I want to read you a Spotify comment that I got from a listener named Dana.
Dana said, I just finished listening to the Biggest Loser episode, and this helped me connect the dots so much.
I was obsessed with the Biggest Loser for years when it came out.
I started my first crash diet within a year of the show coming out.
It never occurred to me how close those events were together.
It began a cycle that I am working to break over twenty years later.
Dana, thank you so much for sharing this.
And while it makes me sad to hear how long diet culture has impacted you, I am so grateful this podcast is helping you connect the dots and see your experience more clearly.
I truly believe awareness is where change begins.
If we don't understand how we got here or even realize that our relationship with food can change for the better, it is really hard to do anything differently.
And my intention with today's episode is to help you start connecting the dots with your relationship with movement too, because it is all connected.
The way we approach exercise, food, and our bodies does not exist in silos.
They influence each other in many ways.
My hope is that this conversation helps you begin shifting how you experience movement away from pressure, punishment, and shoulds, and towards something that actually supports you and helps you feel better in your body.
And if the Diet CultureRebel podcast has supported you or helped you connect some of the dots in your own story, I would love to hear from you.
You can leave a comment on Spotify or a rating and review on Apple Podcasts.
Your feedback means so much to me, and it helps this episode and this podcast reach more people who need to hear it.
My standard disclaimer, this podcast is for educational and informational purposes only, and it is not a substitute for individual medical care or advice.
Tyler, so many of my listeners have been caught in the trap of fitness programs promising quick fix results, body transformations, or that new you if you just lose the weight.
And what I'm really excited to talk to you about is the fact that you actually used to kind of build those programs yourself.
And I think that's something that's so relatable because I think almost everyone has been caught up in that kind of belief system, myself included.
And fortunately, some of us end up changing for a lot of reasons.
Can you take us back to that time and share what you believed you were helping people achieve and why it felt like the right thing to do then?
是的。
Yeah.
I'm happy to do that, Bonnie.
And, thanks for having me on the show, by the way, and being able to talk to all of your listeners.
I really appreciate it.
是的。
Yeah.
Like you said, I was a part of the problem, you know, and that's something that I've had to do a lot of personal work on to be able just to admit so freely because, you know, I had a company that was growing rapidly.
We made the Inc.
500 fastest growing companies list three years in a row.
哇。
Wow.
It was providing that Instagram lifestyle that everybody wants.
And at some point, I realized I wasn't fulfilled.
I didn't feel good.
It that came with the awareness that ultimately what the fitness industry does to people is it says, you should hate yourself unless you look this way.
And I have a program that will help you look this way.
So you should buy it.
Right?
And how I know this so clearly is because I did it.
I did it for years and years and years.
And we talked about how to lose belly fat and how to, you know, get toned abs and how to do this and blah blah blah.
Now behind it, I I still think a lot of my programs were great.
That was the marketing that we used to get people into fitness programs that were built around movement and built around progressive strength training and things like that.
But, the underlying philosophy was one of teaching people self judgment, self criticism, shame.
And the biggest thing that really came up for me and my wife besides having daughters and realizing I didn't want them to grow up in a world that made them feel that way was that one of the biggest struggles people have is being consistent.
Is being able to consistently show up and like take care of their bodies.
And when we really sat back and thought about this, we realized that when we tell people you should shame yourself into fitness, you're constantly feeling bad.
And when we do something that makes us feel bad, do we want to keep doing it?
No.
Right?
So what happens if we can convince people to do something that makes them feel good?
是的
Yeah.
You've got like this internal motivation.
是的
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
It's an intrinsic motivator versus an extrinsic motivator.
And if you look at the research on this, if you can develop intrinsic motivation, that changes your identity.
And if your identity and your values and your internal beliefs change to I am someone who's worthy of self care and I show up and take care of my body, I listen to my body, I connect with my body, and you develop some tools around how to do that.
Now all of a sudden, have a lifelong habit where you don't wake up every day dreading going for the run or going to the gym or doing this thing or, oh my gosh, I ate this food, so I gotta go burn these calories.
Right?
Instead, wake up and you go, how does my body feel?
Do I feel like I have energy today?
Did I sleep good?
How much time do I have?
不错。
Cool.
I'll sneak in a little stretching.
I feel kind of tired.
I'm gonna just do some stretching and some walking.
Oh, I feel great today.
I'm gonna do a hard workout.
I'm gonna let some of that energy out.
Right?
So so much of what we do now at WeShape and the message that we're trying to teach people is simple.
Right?
It's my shirt.
Move better, feel better, and take care of yourself.
Learn how to take care of yourself, not punish yourself.
是的。
Yeah.
哇。
Wow.
I mean, I couldn't agree more.
I think about, like, those intrinsic motivators and, you know, when we're talking about like eating too, I feel like that can really motivate us to make food choices that leave us feeling our best that are much more sustainable than like this eat this not that list because we're trying to lose weight or something like that.
Your journey is so fascinating to me, especially because you said that you had such a successful career when it was really based on kind of like the body shame and the mainstream fitness messages that we see now.
So what ultimately made you decide to make this pivot where like, you were like, okay, on one hand you have this really successful career that you've built.
And on the other hand, you know, that it, like, doesn't align with your belief system.
So was there one moment, or was it like a small progression over time that made you finally start to make changes?
Definitely a small progression.
So I'll backtrack a little bit to kinda how coach Tyler got to be coach Tyler here.
So, Bonnie, one of the biggest problems that I believe we have in our society is that people don't, give themselves the freedom to say, I was wrong and change their mind.
This happens in politics.
This happens in health and fitness.
This happens in so many different ways, and I think it really works against us.
And it's because people are afraid to lose the momentum that they've gained after spending years or decades in a particular career or a particular belief system.
But I'm kind of of the philosophy.
If you got a belief that's not serving you or it's not serving others in a positive way, you got to discard it.
You got to start over.
So I just want to say that like most of the people probably listening, I grew up in diet culture.
I grew up in this toxic fitness culture.
Right?
I I was not an athletic kid.
I was not a kid who was born with a six pack like some of my friends were.
Both of my parents struggled with diet after diet and doing Weight Watchers and all these different things.
Right?
And they constantly struggled.
And I had no good examples in my life.
And when I was about I was in, like, my late high school years, I remember I read a book and there was a principle in there that really hit me.
It was I have the ability to choose who I wanna become.
And it was like the first time that somebody told me I didn't have to be like the people that I was being modeled, you know, all their behavior.
I don't have to be like them.
I could choose otherwise.
Now in some ways, this is a positive message.
And in some ways, I really took that and took all my insecurity and put it right behind that.
Right?
Because at the time, I didn't have the body I wanted.
I didn't have health.
I wasn't strong or flexible or any of this stuff.
And I was like, I can change this.
Right?
And so I went knee deep into toxic fitness culture.
Right?
Like, just shaming myself to go hit the gym and hitting it for hours, you know, every single day, every single week.
And as luck would have it, I got hit by a car.
哇。
Wow.
And it broke the bottom of my femur.
I ended up in a wheelchair.
I wasn't able to walk.
And after that injury, I went back to the gym, and everything I previously did hurt.
And it was a really interesting experience for me because there I was trying to, like, pump my muscles and burn calories and, like, you know, do the thing that we all do when we join a gym.
And I was faced with something that was more it was it was just in front of me.
Like, when you have injuries and pain, by the way, you you can't focus on anything else.
And and I wanna tell you something.
This is crazy.
A quarter of Americans are experiencing chronic pain right now.
哇。
Wow.
A quarter.
One out of four people, chronic pain.
And what I learned over the ten years I was I was working through this was that so much of the chronic pain we experience happens because of poor movement patterns.
We don't know how to move our bodies well.
Now does this mean that great movement gets rid of all aches and pains?
Maybe not.
Maybe you have some acute injuries, damage to your joints, etcetera.
But in almost every case, it lessens it, and it makes it more comfortable, and it allows you more freedom of movement throughout your daily life.
And so that's one of the reasons we've become, I think, so big on social media is we're just teaching people, hey, if you wanna feel better, if you wanna enjoy your body and your life for as long as possible, then you gotta learn how to move better.
And so I went knee deep into learning how to move better.
But here's the trick.
This story doesn't end here.
I got so into it.
It was all about performance.
Right?
How much can my body do?
How strong can I get?
How flexible can I get?
How coordinated?
And all these different things.
I did gymnastics and jujitsu and hand balancing and rock climbing and calisthenics and weightlifting and everything you could imagine.
Right?
And by the way, along the way, did the keto diet, the vegetarian diet, the vegan diet, the I had everything under the sun.
Right?
And as luck would have it, I was doing adult gymnastics and I came down from a twisting move and I blew my knee out completely sideways.
K?
K?
And this one was way worse than the first injury.
This is like ten years later, by the way.
Wow.
At the time, I was a personal trainer.
I had a really successful local gym program, several different locations and lots of people.
And I was teaching them my principles of it was about movement.
It was about progression, but it was packaged in weight loss and, you know, all these things that we just talked about.
But after my second injury, I really had to rethink things.
I've had four surgeries on that knee trying to make it better.
I still don't have an ACL.
I still don't have a medial meniscus.
And so for all the people out there who struggle with pain and feel like maybe working out isn't for them because they don't know what to do, which is a lot of people by the way, you got a guru living inside of you.
That's what I ultimately realized.
And when I learned how to move well, my body felt good.
When I was connected to my body and my movement, my body felt good.
When I ignored it, which by the way, when I injured my knee in that gymnastics class, my body was telling me stop.
I very clearly remember my body saying stop, but the coach said punch harder.
And I remember looking at that coach and thinking in my head, I'll show him.
And I did it.
砰。
Boom.
Blew my knee completely sideways.
Oh my gosh.
You know, my ACL, MCL, LCL, quad meniscus all in one shot.
You know, when your knee goes sideways, right, it's just horrible.
So that's been quite a journey for me because along the way and through those surgeries and recovery, I've had to check my ego at the door.
And I've had to recognize that all the ways that I ended up hurting myself were me ignoring my body.
And as I started changing that, I also had to recognize that everyone lives in a body that's gonna degrade.
We're all gonna slowly get weaker and less flexible, and we're all gonna eventually die.
I know that's a sad message to have.
And don't get me wrong.
You can move better and feel better for longer.
Right?
But it's true.
It's just the truth.
And can I find self worth?
Can I find value in myself if I remove myself from my body and how I look?
If I remove myself from my performance and what I can do?
If I remove myself from, my finances and my success?
And so throughout a series of just feeling like I got beat down after this knee injury, it was this has been another I don't even remember how long it's been.
It's been fifteen years since then.
I've had to just continuously reconnect with myself and recalibrate.
And so even though we had a successful company, even though we had made this Inc 500 list, even though we had hundreds of thousands of customers coming in every year, even though I finally got everything I wanted, I'll never forget this one experience which is I I had this car that I really wanted.
Right?
Like a lot of guys, we have this ego.
We wanna have the great car.
It's my husband.
是的。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
So I went and bought that car.
I went and bought that car.
It was 2,017.
And I'll never forget, I was driving at home.
It was about a thirty minute drive from this dealership where I got it.
I pulled up in my driveway and had this moment.
I was like, I'm still empty on the inside.
哇。
Wow.
I'm still empty on the inside.
And I tried to fill that hole for a couple more years, don't get me wrong, with success and achievement and all these things that we talked about.
But as you continue to try those things and you continue to have the awareness that you still feel empty inside, you start to realize you're just trying to fill a hole that will never be filled.
And so at the same time, my partner was going on her own journey, and she was realizing how toxic the fitness industry was.
So I wish I could say that I was the one who had that awareness.
I was having a lot more awareness around feeling like I tried everything to fill that emptiness inside.
She was having the awareness that we're living in this this culture that makes us feel empty.
When we can kinda combine those two things, we just realized we were on the wrong path.
And one of the proudest moments of my life was to take something that was incredibly successful and throw it in the trash.
I mean, like, you know, people on the Internet always talking about sales funnels and these things and success and blah blah blah.
I might turn that all off.
Millions and millions and millions and millions of dollars a year and just turned it off.
And we asked ourselves the question, if we got nothing for it, no credit, no money, no nothing, what would we do?
And I understand that's incredibly privileged position to be in.
But it's something that I think everybody should ask themselves.
Because again, we only got this one life right now.
And so let's live it in a positive way.
Let's live it in a way that feels like it serves the world.
Right?
And so, we created WeShape.
是的
Yeah.
And WeShape's philosophy is is really simple.
It's we want to help people learn how to move their bodies better.
We invest heavily in technology to give people a unique experience.
All bodies are unique.
So I can't give you one program that's gonna fix everything.
I gotta give you something that feels like the right fit for you.
And then we invested a lot of time and energy into building a framework around changing people's mindset.
Because if I can't shift you away from I hate myself so I should do this workout, you're gonna get stuck in what we call the one step forward, one step back game.
Right?
You you start a program, I'm gonna work out five days a week, and then you get after it, you get injured, you get burned out, and then you stop, and then you repeat that cycle over and over again.
And basically, everybody who comes into WeShape or joins our challenges and whatnot, they've had that experience.
Right?
They've let the scale rule how they feel about themselves.
They've taken that one step forward, one step back.
And the reality is if you do that for ten years, twenty years, thirty years, forty years, it doesn't matter.
You go nowhere.
You go nowhere.
And so oftentimes we're telling people do less.
Right?
Oftentimes we're telling people, hey, the most important thing you can do right here is develop a deep connection with your body and learn to look in the mirror and say, I'm worth taking care of myself.
And so I don't know if I answered your question.
I went on a real long rink right there.
But Yeah.
That's that's how I got to where I am today.
A 100%.
And what, you know, what I really reflected on when you were talking about all that, a few things, but how so many of us respond to toxic fitness culture and diet culture in so many different ways.
So my story, I really resonate with a lot of what you said, like feeling that pressure to push yourself to the limits.
In college, I got into running.
I ran a marathon in college.
I ran one more shortly after.
While I was doing that, I was also cheering for the college I was at.
And those two activities don't complement each other.
So, you know, when you do cheerleading, like, it's like you you have more like power movements that you need and running kinda like, especially a marathon, it it almost hurts how well you can perform like in something like cheerleading.
So I was really running my body to the ground.
是的。
Yeah.
And I would just like overexert myself.
And at the same time, I know for a lot of my listeners, some resonate with that.
Right?
Like pushing themselves to the limits.

But I have others who they've almost come across this like barrier where it's like they wanna work out.
They've gotten all these messages telling them that they should.
They need to go to the gym.
They tell themselves they are.
They create goals saying, I'm gonna go to the gym x days a week, but they just like literally can't do it.
So that's another way I see it coming up.
And then I have some listeners who feel like it's just constantly punishment, like a chore, or just a means to an end to just change their body size.
And, you know, they're so used to only seeing trainers who like the first thing they do is have them step on the scale and then their entire sessions around working out are centered around that.
And so I really truly believe in everything that you do at WeShape.
And I love how it focuses on just mobility and feeling good and how you took this massive leap of faith from all this other success you had to do something that's more aligned with your ethics and what you know is right.
And I think for so many of my listeners, it's kind of like a very similar scary leap of faith that they have to take in themselves too to move away from dieting and all of these societal pressures that we are told are the right things to do, but actually really harm us.
Like being extremely rigid about how we're eating, doing the mainstream diets, always trying to eat or exercise in a way that just controls our body size.
Like it's a massive shift to focus on something else and do something different than what most people around us are doing.
Hey, Rebel.
Quick question for you.
Do you ever feel confused about when to eat, how much to eat, or how to stop when you are actually full?
If you are nodding your head yes, then this is for you.
I created a completely free hunger and fullness scale guide to help you reconnect with your body's cues instead of listening to diet rules external shoulds.
This is about building trust with your body so you can practice mindful eating and gain confidence eating what and how much feels good to you.
Inside this guide, you will learn what your hunger and true fullness actually feel like, why dieting can disconnect you from these cues, how to start using the scale today in a simple, non overwhelming way, and how to use this tool to feel more confident in what and how much you eat.
This guide is for you if you are tired of second guessing yourself or relying on rigid plans to tell you what, when, and how much to eat that only backfire in the long run.

No pressure, no perfection, just a helpful next step to help you rebuild trust with your body and make eating easier, more intuitive, and more enjoyable.
好了。
Alright.
Let's get back to the episode.
And the other thing I wanna add that I actually really loved about your website when I went on to WeShape is that there was age diversity when you looked at your website.
And I think especially for women, like youth is valued so much.
And we don't we don't really have representation as we age in a lot of mainstream places, especially in the fitness industry.
So I love how you also have that diversity on your website and like you're really like appealing to real human people.
是的。
Yeah.
I appreciate that so much.
And I wanna go back to what you said because you said you have these different types of people who listen to the show.
是的
Yeah.
And what I've kind of observed about those different types of I've I've seen the same thing.
Right?
I see those categories very clearly.
Is underneath all of that is is low self worth.
When we show up for ourselves in an extreme way, we're expressing our insecurity and our low self worth.
When we can't find the motivation to show up for ourselves, we're expressing that in low self worth.
When we feel like it's a chore constantly, we're expressing that in low self worth.
Right?
And so this is the the crux of the mindset side of what we do at WeShape is is first realizing that that's the case.
Right?
The majority of the decisions we make around diet and fitness are because we don't like ourselves as we are right now.
And if we can pause and we can start to learn to appreciate ourselves as we are right now, then guess what happens?
We want to take care of ourselves.
This goes back to what I said earlier.
When we feel bad when doing something, we don't wanna do it.
But if I can help you feel good while doing something, we want to do it.
And so we have to shift that paradigm, and it can start with something as simple as waking up each day.
And I don't want you to lie to yourself and say, I'm love my body.
And if that's not true, that's not how it works.
It's, wow, my body breathed all night long while I was sleeping.
That's pretty amazing.
My heart has beaten for however many years I've been on this earth.
My legs have carried me all this time.
And it turns out when you can find appreciation in the small things for yourself, that builds over time.
And if you can appreciate yourself, you change the way you feel about yourself.
And when you change the way you feel about yourself, you change the actions you take.
Right?
And so all we do on top of that is bring the awareness to all of this, support people throughout that journey, and then give you tools.
Right?
Hey.
If you're tight here, if you're achy here, if your body's not feeling, you know, great here or there, you're feeling too weak, too flex or inflexible, here you go.
We got something for you.
We'll give you the tools.
But one of the things that I love to say is I don't wanna be your guru.
Right?
I am not up here trying to be like the guy who knows all.
I do not know all.
I'm showing people basic principles of biomechanics.
I want you to be your own guru.
是的
Yeah.
I wanna give you the tools for your mind and your body and I want you to go out and try them out and feel them for yourself and connect with yourself in a meaningful way.
And use what works for you, discard the rest.
And one final thing I do wanna say is that I think the reason why this mindset of just shaming ourselves into being motivated is so popular.
And you might resonate with this.
I don't know.
I'm curious to hear what your take is on this.
Is that the people out there who achieve the body, the success, the fame, the whatever are the ones out there preaching this.
And so everyone out there is thinking themselves, I don't hate myself enough to be able to feel motivated enough to do this workout.
Maybe I should hate myself more.
And then there's the the people out there like myself.
I'll just speak for me where if you heard my inner dialogue when I was, changing the way I looked in the past, you would be like, nobody should ever talk to anybody like that.
Mhmm.
And I don't think people realize that the most successful, the best bodies, all these people out there on social media are often people with the lowest self esteem.
是的。
Yeah.
The people we compare ourselves to.
And they're the people we compare ourselves to.
They're the people we aspire to become.
And I think it's really important.
Again, when we talk about mindset, everything we talk about here starts with awareness.
Is let's build the awareness together that we're lifting that message up by wanting to become that.
And instead of doing that, let's look away from that, and let's start looking towards ourselves.
Let's walk past the mirror and notice when we have that inner critic show up and start judging us.
And let's just pause for a second and say something nice about ourselves.
And just like a muscle gets stronger with repetitions, your mental pathways get stronger with repetitions.
So the more we do this, the more we fortify those neural pathways and those thoughts in our brain and those old beliefs and thoughts of self hatred, self judgment, self criticism go away, and our self worth begins to grow.
I love that.
So for my listener right now who's listening to this and they're like, everything makes sense.
Everything clicks.
I love this.
But when I go to my doctor, they tell me that for my knee pain, need to lose weight.
Or they tell me to improve body whatever other body aches, pains, ailments, I need to drop a category in a BMI category or something.
You know, a lot of my listeners are really under that belief system like where they're like, this sense what Tyler is saying, but my doctor just said this.
So how can we shape, and the philosophy that you all do where you really do focus on, like, mobility, that mind body connection and functional movements to actually help you, like, feel better overall.
How can that help someone who is experiencing body aches and pains instead of them jumping to the, like, let me lose weight narrative?
是的。
Yeah.
So I'm happy you brought this up because I really wanna help people understand that their doctor is wrong if that's the only advice they give them right now.
Okay?
So let me and I don't wanna, like I'm not trying to speak above my pay grade here, but check this out.
If you have a knee that hurts, there's likely a very common reason that's going wrong with this is a knee is a hinge joint.
It's supposed to go forward and backward.
If you have a little bit of internal rotation or lateral movement in that knee, usually comes from the foot of the hip, then what happens is we develop knee pain, we wear down the joint, we end up with bone on bone pain, arthritis, etcetera.
It gets worse and worse.
好的。
Okay.
If you lose weight and you don't change that movement pattern, does that go away?
不会。
No.
Guess Right?
它是
It's
Like if I'm driving a car and the wheels are out of alignment and I take some weight out of the trunk and the wheels are still out of alignment, am I gonna still break my car?
是的。
Yes.
A 100%.
好的。
Okay.
And so what a doctor doesn't understand, just like they go to school for two weeks to learn about nutrition, They don't learn about biomechanics.
They don't learn about movement.
They don't learn about how the human body is supposed to move.
And if they did, instead of saying that they would say, hey, maybe you should go see a physical therapist to help you learn how to move better so you can feel better.
Right?
And I think that again, this is even a little bit of a slippery slope.
I just wanna say this too because when we go to a physical therapist, we make them the guru.
A lot of people come to us and they make us the guru.
And I keep encouraging people.
Right?
If all you do is like watch us teach you how to do it and then you don't take that principle of the knee goes the same direction as the toes.
Right?
If your knee hurts, see, knee goes the same direction as the toes, that's gonna make it so much better.
And there's a lot more to it.
Don't get me wrong.
But if you take your walking and you start being mindful about that.
If you walk up and down stairs and you start being mindful about that, every time you stand up from a chair, you start being mindful about that.
Guess what?
Pain starts to go away.
Right?
And it feels good.
And so we wanna do more of the things that feel good over time.
And on top of this, I just want I wanna share a quick story with you because I've had a lot of knee pain in my life as you can imagine with, now five knee surgeries, one on the left and four on the right and all these different injuries.
I just wanna go back to the mindset thing too because when a doctor says you need to lose weight, what do you feel?
It's shame.
Bad.
是的。
Yeah.
How you feel bad?
You're like, oh, and you're like, I should.
I should go to a workout.
I should be on a diet.
blah blah blah。
Blah blah blah.
Like you did something wrong.
是的。
Yeah.
Like you did something yeah.
Like you're something's wrong with you.
Right?
And when something's wrong with you, we don't feel intrinsically worthy.
And I remember I was walking up this really big flight of stairs a few years ago after I just popped my third ACL doing something stupid.
I didn't listen to my body again.
I And was walking up these stairs, my knee was all inflamed, and my inner critic came back.
And I was like, come on, you piece of shit.
Like, let's drag this leg up the stair.
And I had a moment where I just, like, my heart broke.
And I thought, what if my what if that was my daughter limping up the stairs and I talked to her like that?
是的。
Yeah.
You would never say that out loud.
Would that do anything for anybody?
Or would it just create a ton of negativity?
So why the hell am I talking to myself like that?
Why am I talking to my knee like that?
And that was a game changing moment for me where I shifted the inner internal talk around my injuries.
Right?
Instead of going, come on, you piece of shit.
Let's go.
Like, how come you're always this?
It's, hey.
You're doing the best you can.
We'll go slow.
I'll take care of you.
We'll get through this together.
And I think when people get injured and a doctor says, lose weight, instead of, hey, let's take care of your injury, it's doing nothing but creating more negativity.
But if that doctor said to you, hey, you should take better care of your knee.
You should take better care of yourself.
How can I help support that?
How does that feel?
That feels like somebody who who cares about you.
Somebody who wants to encourage you, not shame you.
And so I think it's really important that people pay attention, become aware of the nuances of the language that's being spoken to them.
是的。
Mhmm.
Because there's so much in this world, in marketing, in the way your doctor talks to you, in the way your friends talk about themselves and, you know, around you.
Like, all this stuff is just ultimately making us feel bad.
And the message I really want you to hear is you're worthy of caring for yourself.
You're worthy of love just as you are.
And if there's anything you should be doing, if your body doesn't feel good, is take baby steps, little steps to take better care of yourself.
These are such powerful reminders.
One of my favorite things that I love to do when I hear people who are jumping straight to blaming their body size for aches or pains is ask them to think of, like, what are three other possible things that could be contributing to body aches and pains?
And often it's things like, well, I never stretch.
I hardly move.
I'm getting older.
I had this injury a while ago.
And it's just when we can do that, I think it also helps us be so much kinder to ourselves with dealing with some of these body aches and pains.
And so I love everything that you've shared, Tyler, and I really truly believe in the message of WeShape and what you all do.
What's been one of the most powerful or inspiring client stories you've seen since starting WeShape?
Oh, Bonnie.
哇。
Wow.
We've I've I feel so blessed because if I'm honest with you, WeShape has been the hardest thing I've ever done as a company in my career.
It turns out that when you tell people, hey.
It takes a long time and you have to change the way you're thinking about things and, you know, go slower.
It it it's not sexy, and people don't wanna sign up for that right away.
And so it's taken a lot of time to figure out how do we create an experience for the people that follow us that can take them from just a little shred of awareness of what they could be doing to care for themselves to deeply loving and caring for themselves.
And so over the last, you know, few years as we've been building WeShape, I really look at kind of the front facing things that we do as kind of a Trojan horse.
Right?
Because if you go on our social medias with WeShape, you know, we do have a podcast where we talk a lot about the mindset as well, but that's a tiny fraction of the views that we get compared to our regular social media.
And what we do there is we go, hey.
Hey.
If this hurts, try this.
Just do this for, a minute and take care of your body.
Right?
And it turns out that a lot of people love that.
And they go, wow.
That feels good.
I wanna do it more.
And they're like, hey.
If wanna do more, we'll build you, a ten minute routine.
And they they come and do that.
And they say, hey.
Hey.
If you wanna learn how to be more consistent and be able to show up for yourself, join one of our challenges.
And so over the last few years, one of the things I'm most proud of is that we've built five different levels of what we call our feel good challenge.
Now what's funny about this is people join challenges, right, because they're like, wanna push myself.
I wanna lose weight.
And so like on day one in the challenge, we're like, do two ten minute movement routines a week.
Don't push yourself that hard, and then just work through some of the homework that we're giving you that's more related to mindset.
And it turns out that the people that follow that plan are the ones who I see a year or eighteen months later that have absolutely transformed their life.
And I can think about just so many different people in in our program.
We just held our first live event.
Paula, this beautiful woman from Canada who came out.
She actually brought her husband too.
I was really impressed by him jumping in the deep end of the pool because we did a lot of mindset stuff at the live event.
You know, going from really just not liking herself, self sacrificing, going from program to program, never feeling like anything worked for her to, like, wow.
I really like myself.
I can set boundaries now.
I could be an example for my kids.
Right?
And this story isn't isn't the only story.
I mean, I I have, like, yeah, I wish I could just bring up all of them and show you their own words.
Right?
Because we get people submitting video and stuff to us all the time and on our live calls that we do inside the challenges and and at WeShape as well.
You know, a, you feel good when your aches, pains, and injuries start to go away.
You feel a lot more confident when you can do more with your body.
It's it it feels freeing.
You feel more free when you can, like, pick up the dog food bag, when you can put the dishes away in the top shelf without your shoulder hurting.
But the the most impactful thing that I hear over and over again is is I just I used to not like myself.
I used to judge myself and criticize myself.
And now for the first time and people I've heard people say for the first time in seventy years, I can look at myself in the mirror and say I'm worth it.
Wow.
是的。
Yeah.
It's a Trojan horse.
Right?
And you might find us and you'll do this little move to fix your shoulder and then a year later, you're in our headquarters crying, telling us about how your parents shamed you for eating too much food and all the stuff the trauma that that caused that we had to unwind to get you back to a place of just enjoying your damn life.
I want people to be healthy.
I want people to be happy.
Right?
And the saddest thing to me is that we spend more and more money on diet, on fitness, on quote, unquote wellness than we ever have.
Right?
Actually, I had my team pull the stats.
It was in the seventies, spent around a $100,000,000,000 on health and wellness.
It's insane.
65 x growth over the last fifty years.
And yet we're less happy.
We're less healthy.
We have more disease, more chronic pain.
And so how long are we gonna keep doing this?
How long are we gonna keep doing the same thing and think it's gonna produce a different result?
Right?
I couldn't agree more.
Those are beautiful stories.
What I love so much about everything you shared is that it really mirrors what a lot of my listeners are working to do with their relationship with food too.
Just build this, like, mind body connection connection and and learn learn how how to to pay pay more more attention attention to to their their body body cues cues and their body needs.
And something that I've noticed throughout doing this work for years is that when people do that, it, helps them become a better advocate for their lives, like, really similar to a lot of what you said and just become happier humans.
所以
So
是的。
Yeah.
And that's what I want.
I mean, if if I can build a business, right, I believe I believe in conscious capitalism.
I'll come out and straight up say that.
I don't think most people are doing it, but that's that's who I wanna be.
And what that means to me is I think about how I'm serving others before I think about how I'm serving myself.
And I can say that confidently because I know what it feels like to serve myself.
I know what it feels like to make decisions that aren't aligned with my deepest integrity in service of what I think I was supposed to do.
Right?
I'm gonna make this decision to make more money so I can get that car so I can still feel empty inside.
哇。
Wow.
And that's that's a it's a hedonic treadmill.
It's a loop that never ends.
And I've had the privilege of knowing lots of people who are massively more successful than me, a lot of them in the health and fitness world, and almost all of them are miserable.
And almost all of them are trying chasing more and chasing more and chasing more.
And I get to wake up and see a message that a member sent us about how one little thing we share with them changed their perspective, and now they're able to show up for themselves in a meaningful way.
And it it literally just opens my heart and brings me to tears, and I don't care if I get anything from this.
I don't need the the notoriety or the credit or any money or anything like that.
I I wanna do something that makes people feel like they like themselves more.
Mhmm.
So yeah.
I mean, again, if you see our social media, you'll see a lot about movement and things like that.
But, again, that's the surgeon horse side of things towards how can we get people to start taking care of themselves, to start building that habit of exercising their self worth, of changing their mindset away from exercise and towards movement.
Right?
It's not about how hard you can work.
It's about how well you can connect with yourself.
And, ultimately, the more people we can help find that intrinsic self worth, the better.
I think we
need that.
And I tell my members too during the challenges, I'm saying, my goal here is to get you to shine your light bright.
Because when you shine yours bright, it impacts the people around you.
是的。
Mhmm.
And so I'm like, man, this little wrist drill right here that can make your wrist feel better, that might be the catalyst that takes one person to a place where they can show up in the world and deeply love and care for themselves.
And that one person is gonna shine bright on another person.
That's how we change the world, and I wanna be a big part of that.
That's awesome.
That's a great note to leave on.
Thank you so much, Tyler, for being here today.
是的。
Yeah.
I really appreciate you inviting me on the show, and I love this conversation.
Something that really resonated with me from my conversation with coach Tyler and what I want to leave you with today is this.
So many of the decisions we make around food and fitness are rooted in not liking ourselves as we are right now.
And when that is the starting point, it makes sense why our relationship with food and exercise can feel so complicated and honestly, pretty negative.
Now I know jumping straight into I love myself can feel like a really big leap, So I am not going to ask you to do that.
But what I will invite you to do is this.
How can you start approaching movement through a lens of respecting your body?
And how can you approach movement through a lens of connection, paying attention to how it actually makes you feel?
Because I truly believe those questions can help build a more positive and sustainable relationship with movement.
And just like we talk about with food, this is not about perfection.
It is about building trust with your body over time.
Thank you so much for being here and for spending time with me.

I am so proud of you.
I can't wait to chat with you again next time.
