Hi.
Welcome back to Eat Your Crust podcast.
我是Crystal。
I'm Crystal.
我是Jisoo。
And I'm Jisoo.
So today, our topic is actually gonna be something a little bit more on the personal side.
It's not quite sad girl summer, but we did wanna talk a little bit about what it's like to get in our feels, What are some ways that Crystal and I kind of deal with our emotions and what even brings up or like draws out our emotions in the first place?
So to kick this episode off, Crystal, when is the last time you cried?
Woah.
The last time I cried.
Let me think.
It might have been like the end of May.
That was when my grandparents passed away.
哦。
Oh.
是的。
Yeah.
Sorry to start off this episode pretty sad right away.
Oh, no.
I'm sorry to hear that.
But, yeah, I think that might have been the last time.
Sometime towards the end of May or or, like, beginning of June.
When you cry, do you feel like you have any, like, crying habits?
Or, like, how does that kind of process work for you?
I guess to expand, sometimes when I cry, I feel like my hands get really painful because like, I feel like the emotions sort of well up from like my hands personally.
And then I'll like sit on it a little bit.
And then after a little bit, like my tears will come up and then I'll like start to cry.
And I always cry a little bit less than I think I will.
You know how sometimes people are like, Oh, I cried for four hours.
I'm always like, Wait, how are you guys crying that long?
Mine only lasts ten minutes.
And that's if I'm really pushing it, but how do you think it kind of works for you?
I see.
I see.
I guess my crying sensation, it just feels like something's gonna, like, come out of me.
Almost like I'm gonna throw up, but not like in a nauseous way.
It just feels like something is coming up.
And then instead of like being throw up, it's just like tears.
I'm just imagining you like, oh, shit.
Am I gonna yak or am I gonna cry?
It's a fifty fifty here.
When I cry, it makes me kind of want to, like, yawn.
Mhmm.
Not not not like yawn actually yawn, but, like, I guess it goes back to that, like, almost throwing up kind of, but not in a nauseous way.
I, like, don't even know how to describe it.
It's just like you feel like you need to, like, let something out.
I guess it's just like such a physical feeling
Mhmm.
That I guess throwing up would be the most similar or most recallable emotion, but it's tears.
Mhmm.
Mhmm.
I think I also have relative well, yeah.
It's usually not too long of a session.
Just like I'll cry for a bit and then I'm like, okay, I think I'm done crying.
And then I just return to normal.
But then maybe like after a while, I'm like, maybe I should do a little bit more of crying.
Oh, I know exactly what you mean.
But it would be like short spurts.
Right?
Definitely not like I'm crying for hours on end.
Mhmm.
I don't know why I don't.
Because like even after the cry, like, the feeling still lingers.
Like, technically, you could probably keep crying, but I guess the body is just too tired.
My body is like, alright.
Enough with the crying.
Let's just sit in sadness for the for the next few hours.
I mean, I totally relate with that because I feel like, especially in the case of mourning, I feel almost an obligation to cry as much as possible out of, like, respect for someone who has passed.
Mhmm.
And I've always kind of faulted myself for not being able to cry.
And I think it makes me kind of self conscious about it sometimes, especially when I'm, you know, in, like, a situation where I'm grieving.
I'm like, dude, I'm like under crying.
Like, I feel like I should be crying a lot more.
Yeah.
And then sometimes for me, I feel like it turns into almost like, I'm so self conscious about it that it flips a switch and I'm like, am I performing these tears or something?
Not that I'm that good of an actor, but it's just like I'm so in my head about it.
对。
Yeah.
对。
Yeah.
The crying sometimes takes a lot of effort and like thinking almost.
I think I can relate.
I think I'm just like not a big crier personally.
Mhmm.
That's not quite how I express my emotion, my sad emotions.
So then maybe that's why we like only do short spurts of crying.
Although I will say that sometimes it's easier to let those tears go if you're a little intoxicated.
That's true.
That's very true.
Maybe we're too guarded when we're
Oh, man.
We keep those emotions boxed up.
对。
Yeah.
What about you?
When was the last time you cried?
So the last time I cried was maybe like a month or so back.
I was actually sitting in my therapist's office and I can't quite remember what we were talking about, but it was getting me a little bit emotional.
And as I was talking, I started crying.
Actually, this must be my seventh session or so with my therapist.
But the first four or five sessions with her, I always cried.
And it's kind of interesting because I think my relationship with my therapist is something that I'm definitely working on.
I think it's something that you have to build up a little bit.
对。
Yeah.
Because like I shared on this podcast, the first like few times I felt like I was performing for her and trying to, I don't know, bring up the juiciest trauma stories I possibly can to keep her interested or whatever.
对。
Right.
But I think it was only after I dropped that act that I actually started to make more headway in my personal improvement.
So yeah, crying in front of my therapist is weird because she's always so calm and I'm just like, as I try to get my words out.
But it is very cathartic at the same time.
I think it's because she's not overly empathetic in a sense where sometimes when people try too hard to be empathetic, I think it's not what I necessarily need in like a crying moment, if that makes sense.
Do you feel like okay with crying in front of people?
Oh, it's pretty rare, I think.
I don't usually like to cry in front of people.
It makes me a little uncomfortable.
I don't know.
How about you?
Do you prefer, like, crying alone or with other people?
Oh, definitely alone.
I think, like, I don't even know if I would be able to cry in front of my therapist.
Mhmm.
I think it would just be so uncomfortable.
I would probably start laughing.
Oh my god.
Just just me though.
So even if it's someone you're like paying for a service to like help with your emotions and stuff, you would be kind of like, woah, ran it back.
I mean, I would, know, try my best to voice my feelings.
But I think if I started crying, I'd probably be like, I don't even know if I would be capable of of crying.
I don't know though.
You know, maybe maybe someday.
But like, at this current moment in time, I don't think it's a possibility.
Like, I don't think it's a capability.
What do you
think is, like, blocking you or, you know, what do you think is one of the factors you consider when you tried, like, not to cry in front of people?
You don't wanna be too vulnerable?
I don't know.
I guess, like, if you start crying, then people will always be like, oh my god.
Like, are you okay?
And then they start to maybe, like, baby you.
But then it's like, oh, I don't need that.
Just let me wipe the shit away and I'll be okay.
等等。
Wait.
Actually, I think I know exactly what you mean.
I don't like that process either because sometimes crying is just like a product of your feelings.
对。
Mhmm.
But then for some reason, once the water work starts, it becomes like the sole thing of like, oh, no.
She's crying.
对。
Yeah.
And it's like, just give me like a tissue, you know, and like, let's move on.
I think also when people cry in front of me, I feel like it makes me feel very alert.
Like, oh, god.
You know, like, they're crying.
Let's make sure that they're comfortable, whatever whatever.
So I feel like that's kind of usually sort of the natural reaction that people will have.
Like, oh, they're crying.
That must be a bad thing.
Some or something's wrong or whatever.
Let's try to, like, fix it.
But then I feel like sometimes you also see people who are crying and they're like, oh, no.
I'm actually, like, fine.
It's okay.
I'm just, like, crying.
You know?
That's true.
对。
Yeah.
没错。
Yeah.
It's kind of a big range because I feel like you and I, as we shared, are not big criers usually.
But I also have friends who tend to have tears well up more frequently than us.
And then sometimes she's literally like, I don't even know why I'm crying.
I'm not even sad.
So it's like, let the moment pass.
And I'm like, oh my god.
Are you sure you're okay?
You're like, if you say so, but like shifty glances to friend like
As she's like sobbing.
对。
Yeah.
I think, okay, the best place to cry though is probably like watching a movie.
Because then it's like, okay, the focus is not on you.
It's very clear why someone is crying.
So no one has to be like, oh my god, like, are you okay or whatever.
If anything, they could be like, oh, like, you got pretty emotional during the movie.
没错。
Right.
Or they're like also crying next day.
Yeah.
没错。
Exactly.
没错。
Exactly.
确实。
That's true.
I remember we used to talk about how to, like, best induce crying because it is such a satisfying experience.
And sometimes it's kind of like I feel like it's like the orgasm for all emotions.
Once you get that post cry clarity, it's all things are all back to Post cry clarity.
Yeah.
I guess so.
我
I
like to cry at night so I can shower after.
I saw a TikTok that said like, I mean this, I don't know how true this is, but it said like a lot of men prefer to cry in the shower because then you can't really tell if they're crying or not.
And I do think it is like in general more widely accepted or maybe just more like widely seen or known that like women cry more than men cry.
So then what do you say kind of reminds me of that?
How men are just like crying in the showers all the time, I guess.
好的。
Okay.
I will say though, that's something that Asian media does a good job on, at least lately, I feel like.
Mhmm.
In Asian, like, TV shows and stuff, guys will cry.
And it's like kinda it's like nice to see where it's, like, oh, they're not discriminating too hard against, like, guys and girls crying.
确实。
True.
I'm trying to think of if there's, like, a Western movie off the top of my head, movie or show where guys cry, but I feel like they just have an outburst and not necessarily, like, crying.
确实。
True.
确实。
True.
Or it's like they show the guy crying if a death has happened or something.
Mhmm.
But it's like only if someone dies can we have the male actor start crying on screen.
Yeah.
Which is like a weird system to set up.
Crying should be for everyone.
Like I said, emotional orgasm.
It should.
It should.
I think like even if you're not a crier, you know, occasionally crying little bit is pretty nice.
Yeah, definitely.
I guess even beyond crying, like we kind of talked about how crying is almost like the product of our emotions, but our emotions peak in different ways.
So what would you say are some of, like, the main emotions that you feel?
Or, like, when you're feeling emotional, what are some of, like, the biggest emotions that you're feeling?
哇。
Woah.
I guess it's usually emotions around sadness.
I don't know why.
Now that I'm thinking about it, emotional moments are usually about sadness and not as much about happiness.
Like, we don't or at least I don't sit and reflect on my happiness.
It's just kind of like, oh, like, I'm happy in the moment.
We'll just keep doing whatever is making me happy and then move on.
But then I feel like sadness and stuff is feelings that call for, like, introspection and reflection.
Do you think maybe at this stage in your life, happiness is like I mean, it could be a good thing.
Right?
It could be that happiness is sort of your default emotion, And then sadness is something that you notice or feel bigger because it's accumulating at a certain time when you're like, I'm feeling this all at once.
I think it's maybe because happiness is happening usually when like, I'm also doing an activity.
对。
Mhmm.
You know, whether that's like hanging out with friends, watching a very good show or movie or something, or like doing something that I wanted to do.
You know, like, I'm usually actively doing something.
Then like, sadness, I might just be like lying on my bed and like reflecting on life.
You're like, oh, no.
I need to sleep.
What are these emotions?
对。
Yeah.
That's true.
I think that's a good point.
And I think that kind of contrast I feel a lot when especially something like a big hangout or something, if that has ended and then I'm just, like, by myself, I'm like, okay.
Now the other emotions are starting to, like, filter in when before it was, like, primarily happiness.
I think for myself, though, I think I'm starting to kind of not feel sadness as much in my life right now.
Yay.
It could be because I've been working on myself and going to therapy and trying to force headway in those sessions.
But I think I've been feeling more frustration.
To me, frustration is something that links anger and sadness together.
It's kind of like you're sad and angry about something at the same time almost.
是的。
Yeah.
And I think I also feel a lot of, like, emptiness sometimes, which is weird to call emptiness an emotion, but that's, like, one of the biggest overwhelming feelings that I feel when I'm emotional.
I'm like, woah.
What is this like even for?
Well, I'm glad you don't have as many sad emotions.
That's good.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I was thinking about it though.
And I guess like maybe we just associate the word of, like, emotional and, like, you know, reflecting or deep in thought and stuff like that with more, like, heavy emotions, like, sadness or but then I was thinking about it and, like, if you daydream, technically, that's also kind of like, not reflection necessarily, but you're you're also like deep in thought and it's usually of like good things.
So I do daydream a lot and that might be like I don't know if we would call it emotional, but it's thoughtful.
You know?
对。
Yeah.
It's thoughtful and hopeful.
I think I would categorize that more in the reflective world, like you said.
Mhmm.
哇。
Wow.
That's kinda weird, actually.
It's like reflecting on a world that's, like, not yours.
Because reflecting is usually, like, past events.
Mhmm.
It's kinda interesting.
Yeah.
I think I know what you mean, though, about the word emotional always being associated with, like, sad or, like, more of the heavier emotions.
Mhmm.
Although I do get, like, emotional on, like, the happy side at times.
To me, I think it comes in a wave of, like, feeling really grateful about, you where I'm at or, like, things that have happened in my life where I'm just like, dude, I can't believe we did this.
Like, this is just crazy.
And I do feel a little bit emotional there.
And I think it also kind of happens in, like, moments of great accomplishments, graduation or, you know, finishing something, accomplishing something.
Like, I do feel sort of emotional then.
And it's kind of like, I don't know, like a wistful happiness in a sense.
好的。
Okay.
I'm glad you brought that up because yeah.
I think you're right.
Like, I probably get emotional in a happy way when I'm, like, very grateful for things as well.
And like like you said, accomplishments and stuff.
Maybe accomplishments is, like, bittersweet almost because you're like, oh, I had like went through all this to get here.
But ultimately, it's like happy, but reflecting on some of the tougher times, you're like, damn.
But I'm also grateful, you know, all of that stuff.
This kinda reminded me though.
好的。
Okay.
There was a moment, a funny moment in my life where I was emotional and overwhelmed with happy feeling, I guess.
I was pretty young.
I don't remember exactly what age.
But I think it was like me realizing that I loved my family.
It was kinda cute.
I want you to elaborate.
I think I was just like in bed and I was thinking about like, you know, as children do, just thinking about like death and stuff.
I was kinda thinking about like growing older and like parents aging, brother aging, the possibility of people passing away and stuff like that.
And then I was like, oh my god, I wouldn't know what to do if I lost my family.
And then I was like, oh my god, does this mean I love them?
You get the realization.
Because I think like when you're young, up to a certain point, you just kinda say like it's just like a thing of society, I guess.
Where it's like, oh yeah, like it's your family, so you love them.
Mhmm.
But you might not like fully understand the weight of those words, cause you probably don't really reflect on it much Right.
Until like, I don't know later or whatever or you learn.
Anyway, so in that moment, I was just like, oh my god.
Yeah.
Like, I actually do.
Like, I really love my family.
And I was just like, woah.
Like, I think I kind of know what love is now.
Like, But, yeah, it was it was a funny moment whenever I think back.
The moment you discovered love.
对。
Yeah.
You know, I wonder if, like, also kind of going on the happy versus sad emotional association thing.
Mhmm.
I wonder if the sad emotional moments stick out to me more because happiness is almost like what's considered normal, I guess.
而且
And
what I mean by
that is when I go on social media, people are always posting about how happy they are and like, oh, this was so fun or I'm out here doing this and I'm like tap, tap, tap, tap, Okay.
Everyone's enjoying their twenties and it's normal.
And then when I fall into these moments of weakness, I'm kind of like, Oh.
It almost feels abnormal to feel these things because you're always viewing other people's highlight reels And that's why it might, like, stick out to me more as, like, a memory.
I guess that's true.
It's like the natural order of society is that hopefully everyone is just happy even though that's, like, really not the case.
So then these, like, Saturn moments, like you said, feel more like the parts that stick out.
对。
Yeah.
And I think it feels a little bit more natural to share about your happy times to other people because, like we mentioned earlier, I think emotions are sometimes linked to vulnerability and people don't always wanna be like, oh, I spent like four hours crying last night.
You know, like, it's not always gonna be the best, like, dinner conversation topic either.
I think in some ways, the older we get, the less we see our friends, the more independent our personal lives become from the people we see all the time.
对。
Yeah.
It just becomes a little bit more natural to hide these things or, you know, not even hide on purpose, but like it just doesn't come up as much anymore.
对。
Yeah.
I also don't wanna show up to these hangouts where we might not have seen each other for a long time and just like trauma dump on my friend.
Right?
对。
Yeah.
I guess like in the unspoken societal contract, it's usually like, oh, we talk about happy things here.
Imagine meeting someone new and they're like, how are you doing?
And then you're like, I'm doing terrible.
And then you just fucking like dump these, like, depressing stories on them.
That's like a social faux pas.
It's kind of interesting because I do think with the pandemic, I've actually noticed that people are willing to talk about their feelings more.
对。
Mhmm.
Maybe because we all, like, bonded over the trauma of, like, going through an international pandemic together.
But nowadays, like, sometimes on, like even on work calls, we do the generic, how are you?
Like, how are things?
You know, back in the office, people used to be like, oh, it's good.
Or, like, at the most, it's like, it's going.
But now sometimes people are like, it's not going well.
Like, things are falling apart.
And I'm like, oh.
But I do kind of like the shift of, like, where hopefully people feel more comfortable talking about their feelings or even just acknowledging that, like, things might not be going perfectly.
Sometimes though, it it, like, takes a bit.
You have to get to a certain level of comfortableness with someone before you can drop some of these sadder topics.
But there has been a shift.
I agree with you.
And it's like kind of nice because sometimes it's like big problems that everyone's experiencing.
So it's like, it's nice to hear that other people can also relate.
当然。
For sure.
When I think about the reason I don't bring up some of my more like feeling heavy or like sad things to other people, I feel like it's because I don't wanna be a buzz kill.
But do you think there's ways to bring up, oh, I was sad or like, I'm not doing well or I'm not feeling great without being a buzz kill?
对。
Yeah.
I guess that's how comedians are born.
Right?
They're like, oh, shit.
If I'm gonna have some depressing stuff to say, better make it a joke.
I was like, here's my fifty minutes set about my deep seated depression.
对。
Yeah.
I just wonder if it's possible to get to a point, and I guess it does depend, like you said, on, like, relationship dynamics and even, like, what you're doing together.
Like, I'm not gonna be, like, at mini golf with my friends and be like, yo.
I was fucking sad last night.
But I wish it was a little easier to talk about your emotions and stuff.
And we kind of mentioned this at the beginning of the episode, but I think definitely when inebriated or intoxicated,
it is kind
of easier to bring things up Maybe because you're less, like, on edge.
You've let your inhibitions go.
对。
Yeah.
You're like, this is me.
Take it all in.
I think also it's actually easier to do it over text or phone call because you're not doing anything else.
So you're not really, like, killing any buzz.
You know?
You're just driving the conversation in a certain direction to, like, I don't know, a deeper conversation per se.
But, like, if you're out there, like you said, playing mini golf or something or, like, volleyball, and then you're like, yo.
I'm fucking depressed.
Like, how can you keep playing at
that point?
Anyone else been depressed lately?
Just me.
对。
Yeah.
I think actually, like, the two settings that you mentioned tend to be more one on one.
And maybe it's also that vacuum of being one on one with the person that makes it feel even more like a safe space.
And also just, like I don't know how to describe it, but I feel like if everyone knows that you might bring up sad shit, then it's easier to bring up sad shit than when it's, like, unprompted and, like, completely a surprise.
Fair.
That's very fair.
对。
Right.
是的。
Yeah.
I think okay.
Also, a good thing about text, well, it's a pro and a con.
You'll get better answers.
Like, won't just sit there and wait for someone.
Like, if it were a call, let's say, and you say like, oh my god, I've been so sad about this blah blah blah thing.
对。
Right.
And then the other line is just, like, silent for a bit.
They're like as they're just, like, gears grinding trying to respond.
But over text, it's, like, expected that you're gonna wait a little bit for a response because they have to type it out.
Mhmm.
And then, you know, usually, they're able to just fix it up a bit.
No more filler words and silences in there.
So it feels a little more like you're immediately receptive to it.
确实。
That's true.
And they can, like, reread your text multiple times and be like, okay.
Like, I should respond this way.
Whereas, like, on the phone, if you, like, didn't catch something, you're like, oh god.
Like, hopefully, I can give, like, a satisfactory answer, you know, without making the person who shared uncomfortable.
It's like all these weird things when we're just trying to connect with people, but it's like there's like all these obstacles, man.
What was it like in Avatar, the blue people movie where they like connect their hair or some shit?
等等。
Wait.
That's just sucks.
哦。
Oh.
Sorry.
I didn't watch Avatar, but I thought that's how they connected.
不是。
No.
That's how they had sex.
Oh, no.
Also, there's a book called Cat's Cradle.
Kurt Vonnegut wrote it, who wrote Slaughterhouse Five.
And there's some religion where people connect their feet.
I think that's how they exchange emotions or something.
But now I'm like, was that a euphemism for having sex?
Dude, it might have been.
Foot fetish.
Oh God.
I think what I generally do really enjoy though about sharing my emotions with someone else is one, sometimes people are able to offer different perspectives to whatever you're feeling emotional about or even just being able to relate to you that makes you feel a lot less alone.
And two, I think for me, it really helps to try to articulate my emotions as much as possible.
And then it becomes something that I can ruminate further on.
Because if I just leave it as an emotion, then I might just be spending a few days being like, I feel bad.
Or it might not be a specific enough of an emotion to be able to even reflect or work on it.
So I feel like just verbalizing that or even just typing it out somewhere definitely helps a lot.
Dude, my therapist was like, If you feel overwhelmed by emotions, you can always try writing down the emotions you feel.
Recently I was on YouTube and I was trying to get back into journaling again and I always give up.
Right?
And I was watching some video about how to best journal and the girl said to drop all context building in your journal because who's gonna read it?
It's just for yourself, right?
And if it's the activity and the exercise of journaling that you wanna focus on and prioritize, then drop all pretenses, drop all context building.
You don't have to overexplain anything and just try to be as introspective as possible.
And I was like, dude, that's what was kind of barring me from truly bearing my emotions out on my journals because I would be like, today this happened and then I did this.
And then after all these paragraphs of being like, this happened, now let me go into my emotions.
I would be like, dude, I'm tired of fucking journaling.
You know, like, I'm over it.
You're literally, like, world building out here.
But, yeah, I'm straight up, like, being like a novelist.
After I watched that video, I was like, am I trying to overanalyze or overexplain my emotions even when I'm doing something as personal as journaling?
So I tried to not do that as much as possible and it actually did help.
And she specifically said in the video, don't feel like someone's gonna read this and judge you even if you're scared of your future self reading it and judging you.
And I was like, damn, that's some good advice.
I'm trying to think of how I journal now.
And it's funny because I think I'm actually opposite of you where I, like, maybe world build for, one sentence, and I'm like, oh, shit.
Alright.
Whatever.
Like, when can I get to the fucking introspective shit?
Do you ever read your old journals?
Sometimes.
Are you ever like, I wonder what I was talking about?
Or do you usually know?
For the most part, I usually know.
I don't think there's been something that was, like, very confusing.
I went back and read some of my journals from early high school, maybe sophomore year.
And I'm just like, God, I'm so fucking sad.
It's all coded language for some reason.
I'm like, What am I talking about here?
Literally, why am I keeping secrets from myself?
That's true.
I guess it's like just in case because, you know, all those like movies and shows where they're like, oh my god, I found this person's diary.
I don't wanna read it all.
We're scarred from that.
Code everything we write.
Dude, seriously.
But, yeah, I think going back to that video a little bit, it did help me realize that I was doing too much, like, processing on my emotions, if that makes sense.
I think something that's really difficult for me to do is to allow myself to feel, like, the true raw extent of all the emotions and try to understand them.
Instead, what I was doing was, like, justifying them or making excuses for the way I felt or trying to be like my own therapist in a sense instead of letting myself be like a real person.
I have a follow-up question for that.
你说。
Yeah?
When you feel a lot of
emotions, emotional whatever, what do you do to deal with the emotions?
I think I usually try to stifle them as much as possible by engaging in bad habits.
I mean, that sounds like I'm, like, doing drugs or something.
I'm basically just like I'll, like, eat some snacks or, like, watch TV or, like, watch TikTok or, like, do something that will take my energy and focus away from my emotions.
Mhmm.
And then after I've done that for a sufficient amount of time, sometimes it can take as long as, like, a week or something, then I'll overanalyze.
So it's kinda like a pendulum.
It's like I try to steer as far away as possible from my emotions, and then I'll swing back and engage way too much and try to, like, break it down as much as possible, which sometimes backfires.
Do you, like, throw yourself into work or do you mostly just do things that are, like, relaxing in a sense?
哦。
Oh.
Sometimes I do sort of turn to work.
But I think usually it's more stuff that I can kind of be in the zone about, I guess.
So whether it's over obsessing about I don't know.
Sometimes you can even be like, I start to over obsess about house chores and furniture and gardening and stuff.
I guess that kinda counts as work.
确实。
True.
So it can be something that's more of a duty.
对。
Yeah.
I feel like if I'm emotional, then I want to be alone and I just lie in bed and just think about my feelings.
哇。
Woah.
That's so like, are you not scared of being alone with your thoughts?
不会。
No.
Because I'm alone with my thoughts a lot of the time.
As in, like, I I feel like I think about my feelings a lot.
So maybe I'm, like, used to it.
It's not too scary.
I feel like that's I don't know.
Like, I admire people who are like that for sure.
Because I think it takes a level of feeling comfortable with yourself.
And also, it it requires you to not be scared of, like, certain things, whether it's, like, your emotions or, like, the thoughts that may come up or sometimes even the action items, like, the pending action items that might come up from your feelings.
That scares me too, I think.
Oh, action items.
What are some action items you give yourself?
Say my emotion, like, the overwhelming emotion of that time is loneliness.
I'm feeling really isolated, and I'm feeling lonely.
And I might be feeling weird about, like, where I am in my stage of life.
And sometimes the only thing you can do is to let these emotions pass.
对。
Mhmm.
But other times, there's things that you can do to, like, kind of actively fight these things.
And that even goes for the way I feel sadness sometimes.
It's like, I might be feeling sad because actually I didn't leave the house in like three days and I need to get some fucking sunlight.
And I think it's like knowing that there's things that I can do that almost makes me wanna not feel my emotions sometimes because it breaks from like the, oh, I'm just going with the flow of life.
It's like, damn, I actually have to do these things and take responsibility for my emotions.
哇。
Woah.
That's really fascinating.
好的。
Okay.
So I actually had a conversation with my therapist recently Mhmm.
Where we were talking about, like, emotional processing.
And during our conversation, I kind of realized and I told her, I was like, I don't like to fight my emotions because that just feels like draining.
Like, I'm actively doing something to not or to try not to feel something, I guess, which is just like, to me, counterintuitive.
Like, even more draining than if I were just to, like, lie down and be like, alright.
Let me just think about this.
And then when I'm done thinking about it, I'll be okay.
对。
Yeah.
I don't know.
I don't I don't think those things ever came as naturally to me.
Like, I used to tell my friends that I would not know what emotion I was even feeling until I started talking about it to someone.
So I think people have different ways of processing emotions, and it is kind of cool to see that, some people don't give their emotions the whole runaround of like, I'm avoiding you for the next week kind of thing.
对。
Yeah.
Something that has been helping me a lot and one of the coping mechanisms that I learned in therapy was to actually try to identify the feeling.
Even if I'm not doing the second step of how can I fight this feeling and how can I do this and blah blah blah?
It's like at least try to understand instead of being like, I feel bad, I'm trying to see like, do I feel lonely?
Do I feel sad?
Do I feel unhappy?
And pinpointing like an exact emotion.
And that way I'm not just like, God, I feel bad.
And it might be these 10 causes.
It's probably like, oh, I feel overwhelmed.
And it might be these two causes.
对。
Yeah.
I feel like knowing your emotion is helpful.
I agree with that.
That's something that I also enjoy knowing.
There was also a tidbit of knowledge that I really appreciated that my therapist shared with me, which is according to research, everyone, like, when they're processing their emotion or trauma or whatever, as you said, like, everyone does it differently.
没错。
Right.
And the research says basically that however a person reacts is most often the best thing that they can do for themselves in the moment.
Because it's like something that will allow them to still feel like okay or like manageable, I guess, in a sense.
So it's like even though it might be a new experience or different from what you do or whatever, you should like try your best to just trust that their reaction is something like, they reacted because that's, like, the best way for them to react.
Mhmm.
And so how you can help potentially is to just, like, play along with it.
And I was like, oh, okay.
I mean, that does make a lot of sense because who are you who is anyone to tell anyone how to do their emotional processing?
Damn.
I actually really like that tidbit.
I think it makes me think about how people are so different and even, like, the intensity of emotions or the range of emotions that people even feel in the first place are so different.
对。
Mhmm.
Even taking, like, the act of me avoiding my feelings.
It could be that if I try to deal with it in the moment, it would be too intense or too overwhelming.
So I kind of let it fade or something.
对。
Mhmm.
And I'm probably overanalyzing here.
But I think it's kind of fascinating to know how people deal with their feelings, like you said, even if it's different from the way I do it.
And there's always something to learn.
Like, I love kind of hearing how people feel the same emotion but sort through it in a different way, and that sometimes serves as inspiration for how I would do it later, you know, when I feel that same emotion.
Just as, like, everyone has different personality types or, you know, whatever, of course, then they would have, like, different ways of dealing with their emotions.
It just it makes so much sense.
对。
Right.
So I mentioned that I usually like to just spend time alone when I'm like emotional or whatever.
So sometimes that just makes me feel like I need to go on an extended like period of extreme hermit attitude or whatever.
Do you think you're someone who prefers to be surrounded by people or to spend more alone time when you're, like, emotional?
哦。
Oh.
I think actually my instinct is to spend time by myself.
Mhmm.
If I'm really not in a good mood or not in the right headspace, I like to spend time by myself also because I don't wanna put other people in a bad headspace.
对。
Mhmm.
And I don't wanna do something like lash out at my friends because I know emotions are sometimes very tightly close together that it might know, thing leads to another.
I realized that the best way for me to process my emotions is to talk about it and, open up to people about it, whether that's my therapist or my mom or my close friends.
And I'm trying to close the gap instead of letting myself hermit and maybe spiral down.
Because for me being alone is not as productive, I would say, as it might be for you, I'm trying to reduce that time and talk about my emotions quicker.
And I would say having a therapist helps a lot because I'm like, Okay, I have to have something or like, you know, like at least in two weeks I'll see my therapist.
That hopefully will help resolve some of these feelings and stuff.
And I think also sometimes bottling up my emotions and not sharing it with my friends can feel a little bit isolating for me as well.
So kind of like a work in progress, would say, but I'm trying to be a little bit less, I'm gonna deal with this all by myself about it and like more, hey, like, can I get your help on processing this certain emotion?
I think, like, even though I do like to spend time alone, it is kind of nice to like chat about your emotions with people as well.
对。
Right.
So I guess sometimes it's like, I'll think about it for a long time and then I'll be like, oh, hey guys, wanna hear what I was thinking about?
Dude, imagine though, if you went to therapy and you're like, I just don't know what to
talk about today.
Like, what would they do?
Oh my god.
You're like, my life is going great.
Maybe they would be
like, let's make your life greater.
They'd be like, let's unpack that.
Are you sure you're feeling great?
I think one of my bigger goals though is we kinda shared how the one on one setting is one of the most conducive spots to really share about your feelings.
But I think sometimes that means when you're in a bigger friend group setting of, I don't know, say above six to seven people, then the conversations might not be as raw.
So I think that's kind of one of my goals is like, how do I make these big friend group Hangouts also as intimate and as vulnerable and, like, as personal as a one on one hangout would be?
Get some wine and a charcuterie board.
没错。
True.
关掉
Turn off
some candles.
不错。
Nice.
I'm glad we're on the same page.
Yeah.
