Hi, welcome back to Eat Your Crust Podcast.
我是Crystal。
I'm Crystal.
我是Jeesoo。
And I'm Jeesoo.
Today, we wanted to talk about integrating with your SO's family/integrating your SO into your family.
We're getting close to the holiday season.
There's a lot more potential for SO and family interaction coming up, so we thought it would be interesting to talk through this.
To be honest, I'm still a little bit early on in this, but I think my boyfriend is probably a little more integrated with my parents, just because of physical proximity.
But I'm also very curious to hear about your and James's situation, because you are also married.
I think me and James have the reverse arrangement as you and your boyfriend, because we live physically closer to James's family.
So it'll be interesting to talk through the experience.
I'm going to start us off with kind of a hard question.
What is your stance on getting your SO's parents or family gifts during holiday seasons, or even just visiting?
So I'll start with visiting.
I feel like one of the big conversations that me and James had when we first started living together was splitting holidays.
And we're both only children, so I feel like holidays with the family are really big.
Either we're there and it's a family thing, or we're not there and somebody's parents are by themselves.
Damn.
We had a lot of conversations about, like, okay, how do we split the holidays?
When do we go see your parents versus when do we go see mine?
I think when we were not engaged, it was almost easier in a sense, because even though we were living together, we could split up for the holidays.
But after we got engaged/married, it, for some reason, felt a little bit cursed to like-
分开过
To split up
... split up for the holiday.
Not to say that it's weird if people choose to do that.
But my parents are a little bit more traditional.
But I just remember after we got engaged, I was like, "Oh, Mom, I'll come see you guys, and then James might stay back.
He might come later or something."
And she was like, hand on heart, shocked.
She was like, "You guys are going to split up for the holidays?
No, you guys should stay together."
Oh my God.
And I was like, "Well, I didn't think it was a big deal until you started making a big deal out of it."
I think our arrangement now is, we'll do Thanksgiving with James's family.
Over the Christmas and New Year's break, we'll do one week with my parents, one week with James's parents.
So that has become a little bit easier now that there's something established.
That makes sense.
And honestly, yeah, thinking about it, once you're married, it's just so much more natural to be like, "Oh, where's your partner?"
Like, "Why did you come alone?"
You're married or engaged or whatever.
I thought your story about your mom was really funny because actually recently... Oh, last episode, we talked about how I felt like I haven't been hanging out with my parents that much recently.
So I went and visited them, and I told my mom and dad as well.
I was like, "I'll come at this time on Friday."
And so I arrive, and my mom's like, "Where's your boyfriend?"
Concerned.
I was like, "I just told him not to come this time."
She was like, "Oh, well, what's he doing?"
I was like, "Oh, I think he went off to play golf or something."
I was like, "I came so we could hang out, us three as a family."
She's like, "Mm, okay."
At the end of the night, she was like, "Next time, you can bring Jimin.
Don't let him starve on his own."
哦。
Oh.
And I was like, "Wait.
I'm sure he's not starving, but okay, fine.
I'll bring him next time."
Clearly, you don't care about us three hanging out.
Dude, actually, it's so funny that you say that because I've had such a similar experience where family time is just different when it's the OG.
You know?
It's like the OG squad.
If you were there in 2008, you're an OG, right?
Even though it's really nice and fun when your SO is there, it's just a slightly different vibe, not as nostalgic of a family time.
It feels like you're inventing something new.
I think I romanticized going back to visit my parents just by myself or something.
And then I did that once, and my parents were also like, "Yeah, it's nice that you're here, but you should just try to coordinate when James is free and come back."
Oh my God.
And I was like, does no one value just our family time anymore?
But I think that also speaks to having a good SO-
... to where your parents also highly value spending time with them.
It's better than parents being like, "Oh, why'd you bring your SO?"
Yeah, that's true.
Okay, another really funny detail is, you know my dad, and he's often just shirtless, I guess, at home.
So when I was like, "Oh, yeah, Jimin's not coming today," my dad was like, "Oh, dude, I kept my shirt on for him.
I'm going to go take it off."
Just immediately takes off his shirt in the middle of the room.
I thought that was so funny.
That's iconic.
Okay, but back to the original question regarding gifts and stuff.
I just remembered that you and James are only children.
So the only people to give gift to are the parents, which I feel like is sometimes more awkward than if it's a sibling who is similar aged.
Wait, sorry.
I totally forgot that siblings exist.
I'm actually just looking back to when we were jotting down bullets and stuff-
... for this episode.
Everything we wrote down is about parents.
Because I totally forgot siblings ex- oh my God, that's crazy.
But yes.
I can't speak to what it's like getting gifts for your SO's siblings, but getting gifts for your SO's parents is a big part of integrating.
And I realize over the years that the culture of the family that you're integrating into also matters.
I say that because I think some families are trinket gifters-
... if that makes sense.
You maybe have a big gift, but then you have some small stocking stuffers or something, and then it's a big Christmasy event.
My parents are low-key like Cash gifters/like idea gifters, if that makes sense.
So they'll ask me what I want, but say it's like a week before Christmas or a couple of days before Christmas, and then me/James, we have no idea what we want.
They'll gift an idea to us.
It'll be like, "Here's an X amount of cash.
We think that this should go towards golf clubs, cooking items, or something."
That way, there's sentiment behind it, but also it's like a gift card.
For James's parents, I think they're more insistent on having a physical gift.
But they still like gifting something that's firmly what you want.
So then there's a little bit more pressure to be like, "Oh, okay, by 12/18, you better tell me what you want for Christmas."
Oh, God.
Oh, interesting.
Okay, question though.
Before being engaged and stuff, and maybe even before being in a relationship-
... is your family culture gift-giving?
Was that a common thing?
Yes, it was.
But I think the gifts changed in nature.
So before we were engaged, the gifts were consumables.
It's like kind of the vibe of what you bring if your family friend hosts dinner-
... or you have coworkers or something, and you bring a really nice cookie tin or something to work.
It was like Williams Sonoma, that type of gift.
And then I think after we got engaged/married, it became more along the lines of a really nice sweater or like a rain jacket they've been wanting, or something that aligns more to them, and less so generically nice thing to give someone for Christmas.
Oh, wait.
So this is you giving gifts to them?
Yes, this is me giving gifts.
Oh, yeah.
I'm like, did they give me gifts before?
I think they did, but I think it was also kind of consumable-
... if I remember correctly.
Similar trend.
Okay, I think I'm very different from you in this.
I wonder if it's because okay, I think one might be our parents' personalities, and maybe two is laziness.
My family doesn't really do gifts, so maybe the most that's happened is if my boyfriend's with me, and we're hanging out with my parents, maybe he'll bring a courtesy gift for being there.
But even that is not super strict or anything.
Oh, I see.
I'm still trying to gauge my boyfriend's family, but I think they're very similar.
They're also not very gift-driven.
But the first time I stayed at their place, I brought some small things.
That's actually very interesting because gift culture is so big in my family that I always grew up assuming that it was the same in every other family.
Like Christmas gifts are a big thing, birthday gifts are a big thing.
Low-key, now that I'm thinking about it, I remember when I first started dating James, I was like, "Oh my god, this is what I got for Christmas.
What did you get?"
And then he was like, "Oh, my mom got me Olaf pajama pants."
And I was like, "For Christmas?"
And he's like, "Yeah."
I remember thinking like, whoa, wait, that's crazy .
I'm like, did James's family start doing gifts in a bigger way because of me, or was it just that one time they didn't really do a big gift for Christmas?
I'm like, did I pressure these people into doing big gifts?
Well, it depends.
I'm guessing you gave them a nice gift, and then maybe they're like, "Oh, we must return the favor," kind of thing.
And so it's probably just a natural progression.
And I guess also some families do a different set of gifts for different occasions.
As in, I think James's family also always did big birthday gifts.
But then maybe Christmas gifts were more casual-
... if I think about it.
I kind of feel like the gifting process is kind of an easy/cool way to get to know someone's family, because if they're not big gift people, you can get small gifts.
Like you said, you brought a couple of small things over for his family.
Or if they are big gifting people, you can get them nicer gifts, and in the process of trying to figure out what they want, and you can kind of trial and error it too over the years if they're more of a surprise gift kind of a family.
I feel like it just becomes an easy and intimate way to get to know someone pretty well.
There's a bonding experience almost.
Yeah, you really have to think about what they like to have a kind of starting ground.
Or it's like you start questioning your partner, what are your parents like?
What should I get them?
In the process of them giving you gifts too, I feel like you can kind of see what they think you like.
对。
True.
Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, though, I think Jamin's parents function very similarly to mine in terms of just regular gifting throughout the year.
A funny example would be, I think it was last year maybe, or maybe it was this year.
My birthday's in April, and this was January, I think.
Talking to my parents, I was like, "Hey, Dad, I'm thinking of getting the new AirPods," or something like that.
And he was like, keep in mind, this is January.
他说——
He's like-
... "Oh, I'll just buy them for you for your birthday."
And I was like, "Okay."
And so he bought them and gave them to me the next day or something.
And so that's how our gifts operate.
It's almost like holidays or celebrations are excuses to purchase something that someone might offhandedly mention.
Oh, I like that.
It's casual.
And then also you don't have to worry about the timing of anything.
Just generically, for your birthday/Christmas.
对。
Exactly.
And I think that's kind of similar for my boyfriend.
Actually, his is also kind of funny because one that I remember in particular, it was his birthday coming up, and I think his parents asked, "Oh, is there anything that you want?"
And he was like, "Oh yeah, there's this one nice jacket that I want."
And they're like, "Okay.
Go buy it yourself and we'll reimburse you."
Oh my God, yes.
That's so funny.
It's like a FSA.
Submit your receipt.
So I was like, yeah, they also operate on some sort of casual plane out there.
That's nice, because then you don't have to worry as much.
And it's also nice that their gifting culture mirrors your family, so then nothing seems too forced, or you don't have to newly learn something.
Yeah, that's true.
I don't feel much pressure, I guess, to get nice gifts so far.
It's more like a nice gesture to have something if I'm staying at their place.
Maybe we can talk a little bit about staying over at your SO's parents' place, because I feel like that's also a big milestone.
And it's something that changes my behavior.
I feel like the shiny SpongeBob with no wrinkles.
I'm like, "Hello."
Do you feel the same way when you do that?
是的。
Yes.
I also become a mute.
哦。
Oh.
No, maybe not a mute.
It's more like I become a turtle, and I hide in my shell whenever I get nervous.
Are your SO's family big conversation people?
I think they're in the middle.
They're pretty casual, and I think right now they're still getting to know me more, because we haven't had as much face time, just because they don't live in California.
But also, I'm thinking, sometimes I do visit California and we'll grab dinner with them.
But then, for some reason, we've made the mistake of choosing loud-ass restaurants for the past-
Oh, dear
... three or four times.
So they don't really get... Yeah, it's hard to talk, basically.
But yeah.
They're in the middle in terms of chattiness.
I feel like the level of conversation can also really shape what it's like to go over and stay over at your SO's place.
Because my parents are long dinner plus a lot of conversation through dinner.
And then after dinner, we move over to the living room, chat a bit more.
Oh my God.
And then my dad sleeps pretty early.
Low-key, recently he's been sleeping at 8:00 or something.
But we'll chat till 8:00 or whenever my dad gets tired, and then that's when we'll chill and watch TV.
我、
Me-
... James, and my mom.
Other families, I feel like it's like, oh, you eat dinner, but then chat for even longer at the dinner table or something.
I think sometimes James's family can swing either way.
I was like, whoa, if you're not from a conversation family, and then you marry into a conversation family, I feel like that could be a really big change.
Yeah, I think both my family and Jimin's family are kind of like James'.
Like, we'll eat dinner, we'll talk during dinner, maybe stay at the table a little longer to continue/finish off those conversations.
And then kind of disperse.
Free time now.
Also, sometimes I guess the parents are just like, "Okay, you kids are free to go.
Go play whatever you want to play."
哇。
Whoa.
So then when it becomes kid time-
... and say your SO's sister is there, or your brother is there.
Does it become, okay, now the kids can talk to each other- ... so then the siblings band off?
Or is it like everyone is free to go to their rooms?
I think it's like everyone is free, but I actually think that maybe part of the reason there's kids time is because there's siblings around.
哦。
Oh.
It's like, okay, we'll let this sibling free from the table.
They don't have to stay for this questioning or whatever.
You know?
Oh, I see.
But then at that point it's also like, okay, well, if we're releasing the sibling, then I guess everyone can go.
So I actually do think that is part of it.
Although, it's definitely possible for the sibling to be like, "Okay, I gotta go," and then everyone else just stays and chats at the table.
But I think that usually becomes a catalyst for everyone disperse.
So then when you're dispersing, you're not necessarily going to hang out with your sibling afterwards.
It's possible, but it's not a definitive yes.
So you don't feel pressured to bond with your sibling after?
No, because my sibling and I are already bonded, I guess.
Oh, interesting.
I think it depends on the sibling, and their own level of interest in the partner.
For example, if my brother is home and his girlfriend is with him, maybe I'm a little curious, so I'll stay the whole time, engage in conversation with everyone.
Another example could be, my brother has already met my boyfriend a few times, so he's probably no longer super curious.
So he'll maybe stay for a bit and chat, and then he's like, "All right.
I'm gonna go play League or some shit."
You know?
But I think the first few times he was more curious, and he was much more engaged in conversation.
Although, the funny thing is, sometimes Jimin and I ask my brother about the stock market.
Because he's really into trading.
So you're just like, "What should I buy?"
Literally.
So sometimes we start getting wrapped up in that conversation, and then my parents are like, "Okay, we're leaving."
People are like, "Oh, what are you doing for Thanksgiving?"
You're like, "Meeting up with my financial advisor."
I'm now realizing the level of family bonding pressures can also be different per family.
Because when I go back to see my parents, I'm like, okay, this is pure family bonding time.
Oh my God.
You know?
You're not like, "Oh, James, I'll take you to see the sights of the city."
Actually, okay, that is a good point.
It's not like me and James don't do things just us two when we're there.
But I just feel this immense pressure to bond and be with my parents at all times.
And I think that can be a double-edged sword, because when it works out, it's amazing.
But everyone has their limits to how much time and how much emotional intensity you can have with your parents/family.
是的。
Yes.
That's always been a challenge for me.
I'm like, okay, I feel this pressure to spend 24/7 with my parents, but then also I- Sometimes I just be getting to my limit.
But maybe other people or other families don't feel as much pressure.
Home time is family time, but it could also be alone time or chill time or whatever.
So I guess that also can play a big role in how family time can feel.
Totally know what you mean.
Sometimes you're just like, "Okay, we need to end this conversation now."
"And we need to disperse."
I think the power of making those decisions usually sits with whoever's family it is, right?
Do you feel like you make those decisions when you're with your parents-
... versus your boyfriend makes those decisions when he's with his parents?
Yeah, I guess so.
But I guess also because my parents live close by, we don't necessarily spend long days together.
Maybe we could stay over, but then sometimes it's probably usually just like, "Okay, we're gonna go home now."
You know?
But then it's different, I think, when you are staying at their place.
And that's just the home for the few days.
Yeah, it is really different.
And I think staying over at your SO's parents' place is just an interesting experience.
确实。
It is.
It really is.
One thing is because you're a guest-
……
...
I feel like you just feel so guest-y.
You know what I mean?
I'm just so aware that this is not my home.
I don't think that ever really goes away.
And it's despite so many factors, right?
It's despite your SO's parents being so wonderful, despite them making you feel so comfortable.
At the end of the day, it's not your mom and dad.
It's not your childhood room.
So then I feel like that guest feeling is very strong.
Dude, yeah.
There's certain things that I do that I think just ends up helping me feel more comfortable.
One of the things that I realize is I always need to eat sour candy or something- ... when I'm in that guest role.
I don't know why.
It just helps me.
Just something comfortable and familiar.
没错。
Exactly.
I've noticed when James stays over at my parents' place, he'll get really into a mobile game or something.
Just things to help cope.
Wait, that's so funny.
Okay, wait.
I don't know what I do yet, in terms of a parallel to you and James's coping mechanisms.
But I just realized I'm kind of like, "Oh my God, can I even go downstairs without you?"
If I'm-
天哪
Oh my God
... at my partner's place.
But then I'm realizing now also sometimes when we're at my parents' place, I'm like, "Dude, just go downstairs.
You'll be fine."
Wait, I totally know what you mean.
I completely forget about what it's like.
I'm just like, "Dude, it'll be fine.
Just go do what you need to do downstairs."
And then my boyfriend's like, "Wait, what?
No." And then at, yeah, at his parents' place, I'm like, "I can't leave this room without you."
Sometimes there's just weird things.
I remember there was a time where we would go over to James's parents' place.
James's mom will have made dinner for us, so then it's time to set the table.
And I remember there was this time where I wanted to help, and I wanted to grab the utensils and help set the table.
But then I had this weird feeling of, is it weird if I just walk up to where the utensils are, grab them, and set the table?
Should I be like, "Oh, is it okay if I open this drawer or something?"
I didn't wanna act like this was my fucking kitchen.
So I feel like there's that weird line of wanting to help, but also not wanting to overstep my boundaries as a guest.
Dude, yeah.
And I'm just trying to think through everything.
I know my parents' personalities, so I can say things like, "Just go down.
It's fine."
My partner knows his parents' personality too.
How come it's just different?
I don't trust it or whatever.
It doesn't feel as safe for some reason.
And then I think that the other thing that's just really funny to observe, I think my parents also get just a tad awkward because they're trying to be slightly more put together.
They have some nervous laughs or something like that.
But they're still engaging pretty casually and friendly, but I feel like that's also just funny, watching everyone be awkward a little bit.
It is just one of those things where everyone is on their best behavior, and then the only person that's allowed to be normal is the middleman.
You know?
One thing that was kind of funny is, and I don't know why this always happens to me, but for some reason, every time I go to James's parents' house-
……
...
I end up accidentally sleeping for 12 hours.
Dude.
Not even exaggerating, like deadass 12 hours.
Oh my God.
So then I'll mean to wake up early and-
... go out and chat while having coffee with James's parents, but then I'll literally sleep in till 11:00 or something, and then I'll have to come out and do the walk of shame like, "Hi, sorry, I slept in so long."
Oh my God.
Actually, this is a problem for me too, because I think parents naturally are kind of like, "Oh, what does this person eat for breakfast?"
Or whatever.
Okay, it's a little different at my place too, though, because for us, breakfast and lunch is low-key free for all.
You just figure it out yourself.
And it's not necessarily family time.
But it's so awkward for me because whenever people ask, I'm like, "I don't eat breakfast."
You're like, "Please do not worry about me until 5:00 PM."
Yeah, no, literally.
I don't eat breakfast.
I don't know what to say.
You might not see me until 10:00 or 11:00 AM.
Dude, that does bring up a good point, though, of do you feel like there's a finite number of nos and yeses you can say when you go over to your SO's parents' place?
Oh my God, yeah.
I'm trying not to say no ever.
For example, the breakfast situation, I could be like, "I'll come down and I'll sit with you all, but I just don't eat breakfast."
Yeah, it's like, how can I say no in the most yes way possible?
Yeah, exactly.
I think something about going and spending time with your SO's parents is I'm overthinking every politeness rule.
It doesn't feel polite to demand every meal.
For some reason, just saying yes to a meal feels like I'm somehow demanding it.
Oh, true.
But then also it feels rude to say no to everything.
Like, "Oh, no, I'm okay.
I don't need coffee.
I don't need tea, thank you so much."
That also feels fucking rude.
Dude, yeah, I totally agree.
Sometimes it's best to be like, "You know what?
Partner and I are going to go out for lunch."
Or sometimes it's even better to not eat at home, because then there's less pressure.
No one's cooking a meal for you.
It's like people who-
... are getting paid to do that.
Or a good one is to volunteer.
"Oh, you know, I heard this place is really good.
Maybe me and partner can go pick up takeout or something."
And then it's more chill.
But yes, I feel like putting in breaks or changing things up in the schedule so it's not the same format every night can help a lot.
I'm glad to know that even you feel very similar to me, despite being married for two plus years now.
Wait, three years?
Coming on three?
Yeah, coming up on three, I guess.
Holy.
That's crazy.
哇。
Wow.
It's good to know that these feelings are universal.
And I think it's funny to think that the parents probably also feel it on their end, too.
I feel like there's a level of formality that comes with, I don't want to say entertain, but you kind of are entertaining/hosting your kids' SOs, I guess.
So sometimes I'm like, "This is for everyone's best interests."
Yeah, that's true.
I could tell my parents turn it on when my partner's with us.
They're more talkative.
Or I guess they're more talkative and maybe more inquisitive.
Oh, yeah.
Versus when it's just us, I guess it's more unfiltered, right?
So we'll just talk about-
... random shit.
Okay, actually, I have a good example.
When it's just me and my parents, we'll probably just talk about what's going on in life-
... and catching up.
But then sometimes when it's me and my partner and my parents, then they'll have stories to share, and I'm like, "What the fuck?"
哦。
Oh.
Like, "Where were these stories when it's just me?"
Yeah, it becomes like a real dinner table conversation.
Not just like-
Okay, maybe I've heard this story before, but not in this polished storytelling way.
Do you know what I mean?
Yeah, it's like something that they've clearly done many times.
I'm like, "Whoa."
I heard the, I don't know, jumbled up piece by piece version or something.
Do you feel like your parents start acting like in a unit?
Because you know how when it's just your family, your mom will do her shit, your dad will do his shit-
... and then each person is individual.
But I know we've done episodes in the past of like, oh, when you and your SO go somewhere, do you become-
... like a unit?
Like you each have your role.
等等。
Wait.
Maybe a little bit.
It's not super obvious, but a little bit more cohesive than normal.
They're doing like a pep talk in the bedroom before coming out like, "Okay.
Crystal
Crystal's SO is coming over.
You know what to do."
Get into your positions.
I notice a thing that my parents will do is they'll start to really worry about the menu-
哦
Oh
... about James.
They're like, "Do you think we've been eating the same thing every night?
Do you feel like the foods are too similar?"
I'm like, "Guys, relax."
Like, "It's okay."
Oh my God.
好的。
Okay.
One time when I stayed over at Jimin's place, they kept making hella big dinners.
哦。
Oh.
And I was like, "Whoa, do you guys normally eat this much?"
And he was like, "No."
I was like, "This is like a feast every night."
I guess parents worry/are excited-
... you know?
就是——
To like-
They're like, "Please eat more.
Don't starve yourself."
In Chinese, it's always like, "Don't be so formal or uptight."
Like, "Please just ask us for whatever you need."
And I'm like, "I don't need anything."
I always wonder what amount of food is the most polite to eat.
Because for some reason it feels impolite to eat your regular amount.
Because you might not eat that much dinner when you're just at home by yourself, right?
You might even be wanting to do portion control or something.
But then when I'm at James' parents' place, I feel like I should be eating as much as I possibly can fucking fit into my stomach.
Oh shit, dude.
That's a good question.
I'm actually going to be staying at my boyfriend's family's place in a couple of months.
I was already prepping to eat a lot because-
... it's going to be in Texas, but now I'm like, "Oh, that's a good question to consider, too.
Do I need to stuff myself every day?"
Hopefully there's a gym nearby.
Well, I was initially inspired because my dad, every time he goes to my grandma's house, like my mom's mom's house-
... he'll eat two full bowls of rice.
Oh my God.
And that's a decent amount of food.
But my dad is also someone who doesn't really eat carbs.
So then when he eats at his own place-
... he'll eat basically half a bowl of rice, if that.
So he was always like, "Yeah, I love your grandma's cooking, but also I'm trying to make a good impression," even after all these years.
Damn.
Bro is like 60-something-
... and still doing this, you know?
Okay, you know what I found is helpful?
Making sure that my partner communicates my, I guess, quirks.
... prior to the trip.
The first time that I stayed over, he was sure to say, "Oh, by the way, Crystal doesn't eat rice, so do not worry.
It's not weird if she's turning down rice."
"She just literally doesn't eat it."
But then it was really funny because his family was like, "Oh, she doesn't eat rice?
All right.
We're going to make hella noodles or tortillas."
Shit like that.
There's five stacks of toast and-
... tortillas on your plate.
They're like, "Eat up."
They're like, "Heard you don't eat rice."
But then that's definitely better than having to change your norm, I guess.
Or you to show up and be like, "Oh, actually, I don't eat rice."
And they're like, pot full of rice.
I guess it's expected almost that there's going to be adjustments to the normal family culture.
James doesn't necessarily have things that he doesn't eat that we would normally eat, but-
... there is one thing that we did change.
Korean people typically have a stew or something with dinner, right?
And the way my family used to do it was we would just have the communal stew pot in the middle.
And then we would just, I guess, take some out of it with-
... our own spoons.
I think when we got older, we started to kind of put it out into our own bowls, but that's just how I grew up eating.
There's a communal stew, and then you just eat out of the stew together.
James
When James came over, I was like, "Somehow that feels wrong."
So then now we just do our individual bowls.
I see.
But I remember thinking, like, "Oh, he might find this a little weird, or he might not feel comfortable to do it himself."
So then I'll just suggest we do our own soup bowls or something.
He's not comfortable with the family enough yet to be like-
... "I can do the communal bowl."
And then I think that inspired my mom, and then now she'll put out two sets of everything-
... so that me and James can share, and then like-
哦。
Oh.
That's nice
... my mom and my dad can share.
Okay, I do feel like that's so true, though, because regardless, even outside of having SOs over, it's just like when people are over, my parents are putting out the serving spoons and the serving chopsticks.
I'm like, "We never use this at home."
Now we're all formal with these serving utensils.
And you start to see everything through your SO's eyes, or a third person's eyes-
……
...
I think.
I think when James comes over and I'm watching just us have our normal dinner or something like that, I'm like, "Whoa.
I wonder how he is processing everything that is so normal to me and my childhood."
Dude, so do you feel like these dinners and stuff have started to feel more casual, or is it still pretty formal feeling?
There's definitely still formal dinners.
Since me and James have to fly out, travel a decent amount to go see my parents-
... that first dinner when we land is so formal.
Oh my God.
I feel like I'm at the fucking White House or something-
Dude
... and I'm like, "This is so uncomfortable."
It'll slowly ease up depending on the number of days that we're there, but yeah, the formality still exists.
I think it's just not as consistent.
That's so funny.
The welcome dinner.
They got the nice wine glasses out and everything.
Oh my God.
哇。
Wow.
Okay.
Dude, I have a theory though.
My parents low-key don't know how to be formal.
哦。
Oh.
So then you think it's by default more casual?
对。
Yes.
But I do think they try.
In their own way.
Maybe place mats come out.
Okay, this is so jank, but my parents like to just use old newspaper or something like that in lieu of place mats.
Because then if you have bones or if you drop something or spill something, it's way easier to just wrap up that paper-
哦
Oh
... and then toss it.
And I'm kind of like, "Okay, guys, this is really jank."
Boiling crab style.
Except it's newspapers or it's magazines.
It's kind of jank.
Dude.
I'm okay with this at home, but I don't know if this is the move when you have guests.
So that's one example.
So maybe they're like, "Oh, okay.
Then we'll put out some place mats or something nicer."
Another funny thing is wine.
My parents don't really drink alcohol.
My dad kind of drinks beer.
We always joke that he just can't tell the difference between anything because he always buys boxed wine, and he's like, "Yo, this shit is hella good."
Wait, that's so funny.
So one time, we were at dinner at my place.
After the dinner, my dad, he fills up a small cup of boxed wine, and he's like, "Yeah, sometimes I like to drink some wine after dinner."
And he's like, "Oh, do you guys want some boxed wine?"
Your boyfriend's like, "Okay," hesitantly slaps the bag.
I think on one hand, it's really, really casual, so maybe it makes things feel less intimidating.
But then sometimes I'm like, "Okay, guys, pull it together."
You know what I mean?
That's so funny.
But I like that they're not as...
I don't know.
I think it's really nice that they're so casual and chill about it.
It's a different side from my parents.
My parents are always like, "This is the nicest bottle of wine that we have.
James, I am presenting this to you."
I'm like, "Guys, chill out."
I'm just like, "Whoa."
There's an upper limit for how formal they can handle.
Because they're just really casual people.
Do you think that makes your boyfriend feel more comfortable?
I think maybe, because we have had some more exposure with my parents.
By now, he's seen how casual they are.
So I do think it helps.
I feel like he's pretty well acquainted with them now.
Sorry.
I'm just like Imagining you guys walking through your front door and then Jimin taking his shirt off to match your dad as he opens.
He's like, "Hello."
Immediately strips down.
Dude, I think one time, I think I was like, "Oh, wow.
My dad wore a shirt today," or something.
And then Jimin was like, "Dude, it's okay.
Your dad can take his shirt off.
Should I take mine off, too?"
Got to integrate into the family.
I was like, "Um, it's okay.
Maybe you should all keep your shirts on."
But yeah, I do feel like he's pretty well-acquainted with them now.
Sometimes we'll come through, maybe I'm dropping by to pick something up, and Jimin just happens to be with me.
So he'll chat with my parents, and then I'm running upstairs to grab my stuff in my room.
哦。
Oh.
And then I'll come down, and they're still talking.
I'm like, "Okay, we've got to go."
I'm somewhat jealous of these small moments that you can have because your family is close by.
I wonder if that also adds to the casualness because there's not this whole, "Oh, we only have this day to spend family time together."
Yeah, so true.
But I think there's a lot of bonding/intimacy that can come from just having a 10-minute chat here and there.
Yeah, that's very true.
And it's super obvious to me as well, just the difference of comfort of Jimin with my family versus me with his family.
I've just not reached the level that Jimin has yet-
... because we don't see them as often.
So hopefully in the next few years, I guess.
Yeah, it takes time.
But I do think if you're going to Texas and spending a week there or something-
... it adds up pretty quickly.
It only takes a couple of those sort of experiences to feel more comfortable, and like I said, very formal dinner- ... night one, and then towards the end, it's just like, "All right, whatever.
Fucking goes, I guess."
所以。
So.
Towards the end, it's, "All right, fajitas."
It's like takeout, and we're all sitting on the ground to eat it.
Korean style.
Yeah, I think it was fun talking about this.
It's very reassuring, as I said earlier, that you go through similar feelings as I do, even so far into your relationship.
But it's also just really funny, I think, to hear about the different personalities of different families and how they welcome new people into the family.
So that was really fun.
